Ursula K. Le Guin’s novel The Left Hand of Darkness plays with this idea. I wrote a paper about it in my critical theory class to analyze how the prospect of gender and identification are social constructs.

In this book, there is an alien race called Gethenians who only take on sexual characteristics when it is necessary for reproduction. In other words, these beings are completely genderless until it’s time to reproduce (a process referred to as Kemer). Their reproductive organs aren’t pre-determined, either. Upon Kemer, the individuals partaking in sexual relations can develop either sexual organ. One cycle they could have a penis, the next they could have a vagina.

When the main (humanoid) character, Ai, visits Gethen, he is ostracized because he is constantly and consistantly gendered as a male. Because he is constantly male, the Gethenians reject him because in their society one only has sexual organs while having sex. Hence, since Ai always has a penis, he MUST be ALWAYS sexually aroused. Even the King of Gethen goes so far as to classify Ai’s entire race as sexual deviants because they are permanently gendered (a trait they can’t help, I might add).

This book was written to deconstruct how sexuality and gender roles are concepts created by society. Although he is straight, and the book goes into further detail about him struggling with his sexuality, Ai is a representation of how the LGBTQ community is ostracized by the cishet community for being “sexual deviants”.

This book was published in 1969.

even my homophobic dad made a good point about homophobic people. he said that when you mention a gay couple to homophobes they always get disgusted and the first image that pops in their head is fucking in the ass, lesbian porn etc, etc and when you mention straight couples to them they think about two people holding hands and romantic shit like that. i hate this so much because homophobes consider gay people to be something disgusting and impure which is infuriating because they consider gay people to be these objects that only think about dick or pussy and that being gay is the only thing that ecompasses a gay person, like we don’t have personality or something
