Okay listen I have another disability related thing that’s important!!
If you have any disabilities linked to tooth decay/erosion, through direct cause or secondary symptom, it is vital that you get one or both of the following items: Sensodyne toothpaste and enamel repair mouthwash
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This includes health conditions such as acid reflux, diabetes, thyroid conditions, fibromyalgia, chronic pain & mental illnesses such as depression that create poor hygiene routines, sensory issue disorders like autism and ADHD, and any health condition that causes frequent vomiting / increased stomach acid, including eating disorders and migraines.
All of these disabilities will erode the enamel of your teeth, not only opening you up to cavities but making it very easy to chip your teeth from such simple things as biting the wrong way on the tines of a fork. (I’ve chipped my teeth at least 4 times this way).
The toothpaste on the left here (sensodyne pronamel) is gentle on your teeth, won’t cause painful sensations from any extreme mint flavor, and will even protect your gums if they’re sensitive from any of these conditions.
The mouthwash on the right (Crest enamel repair) will, as it says, repair your enamel which is marvelous, because the technology to repair your enamel at all is relatively very new to society! — but it is most importantly non-alcoholic. Meaning that it works well as a once-a-day rinse without any of the burning sensations of antiseptics that typically discourage people with sensory issues from taking care of their teeth.
I know remembering to do these things every day can feel like a lot when you’re sick and exhausted, but I promise a collective three minutes out of every day is going to save you an incredible amount of pain and money in the future. If your teeth are susceptible enough to rot, you can actually die from infection. And as they say, with how little insurance actually covers dental —
Not brushing your teeth??
In THIS economy???

oral hygiene
perhaps since i am a bit younger than most of the people on this app, or since my nana had owned a kindergarten, i am so aware of the importance of hygiene and health practices. i feel that everyone has put simple things like this on the back burner, since covid, since the internet's takeover.
i remember, when i was younger (2015/16ish) (note: i clearly wasn't in kindergarden at the time, but this is when the memories are from), the halls of my nanas kindergarten were lined with posters that encouraged parents to look after their child's health. current kindergartens, and parents--perhaps due to technology and widespread knowledge-- prioritize other things. it's about time we took responsibility of our own health again.
oral hygiene is the practice of keeping your mouth clean and disease-free. it involves brushing and flossing your teeth as well as visiting your dentist regularly for dental x-rays, exams and cleanings.
brushing your teeth: ✩ use fluoride toothpaste to protect your teeth from decay (cavities). fluoride strengthens the tooth's hard outer surface (enamel). ✩ angle the bristles toward the gumline to clean between the gums and teeth. ✩ brush gently using small, circular motions. avoid scrubbing back and forth too hard. ✩ brush all sides of each tooth, including your tongue. ✩ replace your toothbrush when the bristles become worn.
HOT TIP: if you get bored with, or struggle to remember brushing your teeth, consider swapping to a minter (or other pleasantly flavoured) toothpaste. this will encourage you to continue the habit, since it is more enjoyable.
flossing your teeth: ✩ plaque can build up between teeth, leading to gum irritation and gingivitis. ✩ floss daily to remove plaque from these areas. ✩ if plaque hardens into tartar, only a dentist or dental hygienist can remove it.
replacing your toothbrush: ✩ as you use your toothbrush, the bristles gradually wear down. bent or frayed bristles lose their stiffness and effectiveness in cleaning your teeth. ✩ over time, your toothbrush accumulates bacteria from your mouth. bacterial growth on an old toothbrush can contribute to oral infections and bad breath. ✩ you should replace your toothbrush when you notice that the bristles have become worn, or every 3-4 months to prevent the buildup of harmful bacteria.
storing your toothbrush: ✩ before and after brushing, thoroughly rinse the bristles of your toothbrush under hot tap water. this helps remove toothpaste residue, debris, and any airborne bacteria or dust particles. ✩ after rinsing, tap the handle of your toothbrush against the edge of the sink to shake off excess water. this promotes faster air drying and prevents bacterial growth. ✩ store your toothbrush in a cup or holder. keep the bristles up and the handle down. this allows excess water to drain away from the bristles, preventing bacteria buildup. ✩ place the cup or holder in a well-ventilated area, such as a counter or shelf. avoid storing it in a dark, enclosed space like a drawer or cabinet. allowing your toothbrush to air dry completely helps prevent bacterial growth. ✩ avoid cross-contamination by keeping your toothbrush separate from your housemates, or family members.
electric toothbrushes: ✩ some may choose to use electric toothbrushes, where you only replace the head of the toothbrush. electric toothbrushes use oscillating, rotating, or sonic movements to clean teeth and gums more thoroughly. many models have built-in timers to ensure you brush for the recommended 2 minutes. most electric toothbrushes are rechargeable, reducing waste from disposable batteries. ✩ personally, i prefer to use a regular toothbrush, since i feel it does a better job cleaning my mouth. often electric toothbrushes require you to take longer to brush your teeth.
eating choices: eating choices play a significant role in maintaining good oral health. first and foremost, consuming sugary foods and drinks can lead to increased acid production in the mouth. this acid can erode tooth enamel, making your teeth more susceptible to decay. it's essential to limit your intake of sugary snacks and beverages to protect your oral health.
frequent snacking, especially on sugary and acidic drinks throughout the day can harm your teeth. aim for regular meals rather than constant snacking to give your teeth time to recover between eating episodes.
staying hydration is crucial for overall health, including oral health. dry mouth (which is called xerostomia) can increase the risk of cavities and gum disease. salvia helps neutralize acids and wash away food particles, so drink plenty of water to keep your mouth moist.
remember to maintain a balanced diet, rich in vitamins and minerals. it is essential for healthy teeth and gums. nutrients like calcium, vitamin D, vitamin C, and phosphorus contribute to strong teeth and support gum health. include dairy products, leafy greens, fruits, and lean proteins in your diet.
to conclude: remember that good oral health allows you to enjoy life by speaking clearly, tasting, chewing, and showing your feelings through facial expressions like smiling!

Listen I know that the medical/dental divide is one that perhaps spans multiple universes, but here are my questions: Do people on Gallifrey have to brush their teeth or are there more advanced tooth care methods? Do they produce plaque at all? Do they get dental related problems like cavities? Do children lose their baby teeth?
Gallifreyan Dental Care: The Basics
You'd think that a race as advanced as the Time Lords might have entirely bypassed the need for anything as mundane as brushing their teeth, but it's not that simple.
🪥 Do Gallifreyans Need to Brush Their Teeth?
In short: not really, but some will do it anyway. Gallifreyans are lucky enough to have teeth that are incredibly resistant to decay. Their enamel is super dense and can even repair itself, like how skin heals from a cut. So, while most of us have to spend a couple of minutes each day scrubbing away, Gallifreyans can sit back and let their biology do the work.
However, even this system has its limits. While their teeth stay in pretty good shape without the need for brushing, there's no real known mechanism for keeping their breath fresh. So, while you won't catch a Time Lord worrying too much about cavities, they still need to remedy that pungent early morning breath.
🧼 Do They Get Plaque and Cavities?
Gallifreyans are far less likely to experience tooth decay compared to humans. Their teeth are designed to withstand wear and tear, and their enamel's self-repairing nature means plaque buildup isn't much of an issue.
But let's not get too comfortable—Gallifreyans can definitely still have dental issues, and Dentists definitely have a role on Gallifrey. Fillings or crowns will still be needed, and in some cases, extraction is necessary if the damage is beyond repair.
🧒 Do Gallifreyan Childrene Lose Their Baby Teeth?
Yes, childrene who are loomed as physical kids do go through a phase of having baby teeth, just like human kids. However, not all Gallifreyans experience this, because some are loomed as physical adults, skipping the whole baby teeth phase entirely. For those with baby teeth, it's a pretty standard process—those little teeth fall out as they grow, making way for their adult set.

multiple members of the keroro platoon canonically have bruxism. bite splints exist to prevent damage due to nocturnal tooth grinding, but as far as we know, keroro does not have one. Obviously this is because keronian dental medical technology is too strongly focused on shrinking down tiny and fighting cavity-causing bacteria

I knew today was gonna suck, and no way out of it, I had a fucking dental appointment at the decidedly UN-civilized hour of 8:30am.
I'm usually still 2000 Light Years out at that time. So in order to make sure I didn't oversleep, I set the alarm for 4:45, got up and had enough coffee to get me alert enough to drive to Highland.
Of course, this being "the Island", I have no idea what it's like trying to get OFF said island at that time of the morning now. So I left at like 7:35, ended up getting there by just after 8.
Medi-Cal Dental means the "dentist" I see is a resident. Tiny little Chinese girl, but goddamn, did she wrench the shit outa my jaw, comin' and goin'. The technology advances are mind boggling, but they still gotta wrench on you for anything major, like today: removing a nearly 20-year-old crown that had a huge cavity under it, and had caused one in the tooth in front of it, by rubbing over the years.
I figured they'd numb me up, take a pair of something like offset needle-nose and pull. No. That would have been too easy. She literally cut it off, in chunks. But she leaned and she and the assistant yanked and just generally had their way with my mouth while I just laid there. Where have I heard this before?
So yeah, it figures I'd be waxing maudlin after two hours of having my head assaulted. And not in the fun sense.
The temp crown fits great, but damn that whole side of my mouth is sore, and my jaw feels like I should be smilin' but I ain't. Supposed to put the "new" one on Jun 5, fast turnaround.
Did grocery shopping after that and just got more depressed. Ended up putting most everything back, only getting barest of stuff, still had to throw out $20 past what was left on the EBT. The prices just make my blood boil...they haven't gone down one bit.

Ever Wonder Why People Didn't Smile in Old West Photos?
Tumblr media
"Show me those pearly white teeth, now!" We hear this expression in the present time, but back in the Old West, photographers would not be using this term as most people did not have the same dental hygiene practices we do now. Although dental floss was around since 1815 when it was introduced by American dentist, Levi Spear Parmly, it was not always readily available or simply not a priority. Many establishments had a community toothbrush and several people would use the same brush without sterilization, only adding to worse dental issues. Cavities were not filled; the tooth was pulled. So one of the reasons people may not have smiled is due to poor dental hygiene.
Tumblr media
The idea that poor dental practices and bad teeth as a reason for not smiling in photos may not have been completely true. Most people during this time period flashed a smile with broken teeth or major gaps so looking at their teeth would not be a shock to anyone as they saw this everyday.
2. FREEZE! Cameras back in the Old West had different shutter speeds and people had to remain still so the photograph would not turn out blurry. People had to sit for several minutes for the flash! So people did not smile because they could not hold a smile for that long.
Tumblr media
In 1845, cameras were equipped with more advanced technology and the shutter speed was reduced from several minutes to just one minute, allowing people to smile in photos as they did not have to stay frozen due to exposure, shutter speed and blurriness. So, people did have the opportunity to smile, so why keep the frown?
Tumblr media
3. The most likely explanation for people not smiling in Old West photos is that these people felt smiling in pictures made them look foolish, silly or uneducated. Smiling in photographs did not become standard until around 1920 to 1930.
Tumblr media
One of the first photographs taken of a woman smiling!
In conclusion, the most common reason people did not flash smiles at the camera lens because they felt foolish or that they would come across as socially inept individuals.
Tumblr media
What a difference shutter speeds, lenses, technology and social norms make!

Benefits of Using Dental Aligners for a Perfect Smile
Achieving a perfect smile is a common aspiration for many individuals, and dental aligners have emerged as a popular and effective solution to address this goal. Unlike traditional metal braces, dental aligners offer a discreet, comfortable, and flexible approach to orthodontic treatment. If you’re considering enhancing your smile, understanding the benefits of using dental aligners can help you make an informed decision about your treatment options.
Discreet and Comfortable
One of the most significant advantages of dental aligners is their discreet nature. Made from clear, BPA-free plastic, Alvy Dental aligners are virtually invisible when worn, making them an attractive option for those who prefer a more subtle orthodontic treatment. Unlike metal braces, which can be noticeable and uncomfortable, aligners are designed to fit snugly over your teeth, providing a comfortable and nearly invisible solution to teeth straightening.
Customization for a Perfect Fit
Dental aligners are customized to fit your unique dental structure. The treatment begins with a comprehensive examination, including digital scans or impressions of your teeth. Using this information, a precise 3D model of your mouth is created, and a series of custom aligners is developed to gradually shift your teeth into their ideal positions. This personalized approach ensures that Alvy Dental aligners are tailored specifically to your orthodontic needs, resulting in more effective and efficient treatment.
Convenient and Removable
One of the standout benefits of dental aligners is their convenience. Unlike traditional braces, which are fixed in place, Alvy Dental aligners are removable. This feature allows you to eat and drink without restrictions and makes maintaining oral hygiene easier. Simply remove your aligners while eating, and brush and floss your teeth as usual before reinserting them. This removability ensures that you can continue to enjoy your favorite foods and maintain a high standard of oral hygiene throughout your treatment.
Improved Oral Health
Maintaining good oral health during orthodontic treatment is crucial. Dental aligners help facilitate this by being removable, which makes it easier to clean your teeth and gums thoroughly. Traditional braces can trap food particles and plaque, making oral hygiene more challenging. With Alvy Dental aligners, you can clean your teeth and aligners more effectively, reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease.
Efficient Treatment Time
In many cases, dental aligners can provide faster results compared to traditional braces. The advanced technology used in the design and manufacturing of aligners sheets in the USA allows for precise adjustments and efficient movement of your teeth. While treatment time varies depending on individual needs, many people find that aligners offer a quicker path to achieving their desired smile.
Fewer Office Visits
Another advantage of dental aligners is the reduction in the frequency of office visits. Traditional braces often require regular adjustments and check-ups, which can be time-consuming. With Alvy dental aligners, you typically need fewer visits to the orthodontist, as the aligners are designed to be changed at home according to a pre-determined schedule. This convenience can make managing your orthodontic treatment more efficient and less disruptive to your daily life.
Predictable Results
The use of advanced 3D imaging technology in designing dental aligners allows for highly predictable results. Before you even start your treatment, you’ll have a clear view of how your teeth will shift and the final outcome of your smile. This level of predictability helps ensure that your treatment plan is tailored to meet your expectations and deliver the desired results.
Choosing dental aligners for your orthodontic needs offers numerous benefits, from their discreet appearance to their customizable fit and ease of use. With the convenience of removable aligners, improved oral health, and efficient treatment times, it’s no wonder that many individuals are opting for this modern approach to achieving a perfect smile. If you’re looking for a reliable and effective solution, consider Alvy Dental aligners and experience the advantages of a confident, beautiful smile.
At Alvy Dental, we are committed to providing high-quality dental aligners and exceptional care to help you achieve the smile you’ve always wanted. Explore our range of aligners and start your journey to a perfect smile today.

Forging Islamic science (2018)
"... The fake miniature depicting Muslim astronomers is far from an isolated case. One popular image floating around Facebook and Pinterest has worm-like demons cavorting inside a molar. It claims to illustrate the Ottoman conception of dental cavities, a rendition of which has now entered Oxford’s Bodleian Library as part of its collection on ‘Masterpieces of the non-Western book’. Another shows a physician treating a man with what appears to be smallpox. These contemporary images are in fact not ‘reproductions’ but ‘productions’ and even fakes – made to appeal to a contemporary audience by claiming to depict the science of a distant Islamic past."
"... What drives the spread of these images and objects is the desire to use some totemic vision of science to redeem Islam – as a religion, culture or people – from the Islamophobia of recent times. Equating science and technology with modernity is common enough. Before the current political toxicity took hold, I would have taught a class on Arab Science, rather than Islam and Science. Yet in a world that’s all too willing to vilify Islam as the antithesis of civilisation, it seems better to try and uphold a message that science is a global project in which all of humanity has participated."
"... However, there is a dark side to this progressive impulse. It is an offshoot of a creeping, and paternalistic, tendency to reject the real pieces of Islamic heritage for its reimagined counterparts. Something is lost when we reduce the Islamic history of science to a few recognisably modern objects, and go so far as to summon up images from thin air. We lose sight of important traditions of learning that were not visually depicted, whether artisanal or scholastic. We also leave out those domains later deemed irrational or unmodern, such as alchemy and astrology."
"...Faced with fantasy or forgery, we are left to stand in awe of the telescopes and alembics, marvelling that Muslims built them, but knowing little of the actual artisans and scholars, Muslim and non-Muslim alike. In these lives lies the true history of science in Islamic world: a midwife’s preparation of herbs; a hospital doctor’s list of medicines for the pious poor; an astrologer’s horoscope for an aspiring lieutenant; an imam’s astronomical measurements for timing the call to prayer; a logician’s trial of a new syllogism; a silversmith’s metallurgic experimentation; an encyclopaedist’s classification of plants; or a judge’s algebraic calculations for dividing an inheritance. These lives are not easily researched, as demonstrated by the anaemic state of the field. However, by refusing to collect and display actual historical objects, and instead championing their reimagined counterparts, we efface these people of the past."
