The Saint: The Double Take (6.6, ITC, 1968)
"Now, Templar, please... You are very angry, yes?"
"That is an understatement."
"It will all be made good. You are here, now listen to me and sit down. I need something done, done urgently."
"Mr. Patroclos, let's get one thing straight. I very rarely do favours for the overprivileged - and never under pressure."
#the saint#the double take#1968#itc#leslie charteris#leslie norman#john kruse#roger moore#grégoire aslan#kate o'mara#denise buckley#blake butler#michael robbins#june abbott#michael mellinger#martin wyldeck#geoffrey morris#rose alba#anne godfrey#iain blair#michael pemberton#somewhat frustratingly we seem to have hit another dip in picture quality; it's not that the picture is particularly bad or fuzzy it's just#that it looks really quite faded when compared with the last couple or with the monochrome eps. anyway this is an intricately plotted#mystery along the doppelganger line‚ and pretty cleverly done; i still guessed the twist almost instantaneously‚ just bc it's the only#thing that made sense. the clever but relatively simple plot made me think this could have been based on a Charteris story (making it one#of the last eps to be so) but apparently not; he may have contributed a plot outline of some sort but it's Kruse's script. funnily enough#this is a rare backwards adaptation case: the ep would be turned into a short story for a 70s Saint collection credited to Charteris but#written by one of his ghost writers (as all post 60s Saint books were). Kate O'Mara is once again in doubling territory but doesn't have to#play two characters this time‚ just look sort of kind of a tiny bit like Denise Buckley (she doesn't all that much succeed tbh)#still she's playing a nice calm character for once and not a raving vamp threatening to murder anyone who crosses her

Oh also there's been a fair few women who script edit modern Who: Elwen Rowlands (RTD), Helen Raynor (RTD), Lindsey Alford (RTD and Moffat), Nikki Smith (RTD), Emma Freud (Moffat), Caroline Henry (Moffat), Emma Genders (Moffat), Nina Metivier (Chibnall), Fiona McAllister (Chibnall), Caroline Buckley (Chibnall), and Rebecca Roughan (Chibnall).
Every series that didn't have a woman as a credited writer did at least have at least one woman script editing except series 7 and 8 judging by this list. But the credits change up and Denise Paul did get a "script producer" credit at the time of series 6 and 7 and Lindsey Alford got "script executive" credits across numerous series, including one episode in series 8.
Quick Doctor Who women fact check
I know I replied to this shit a while back but I'm gonna make my own post to avoid giving it more notes.
It is factually true that Doctor Who did not have any women write between 2008 and 2015. It sucks.
This is not, however, solely a Moffat problem. It's an industry problem where women are underrepresented in genre media, including across Doctor Who.
So, numbers. In Russell T Davies' era, ONLY ONE WOMAN wrote for Doctor Who, Helen Raynor (lately a TERF who stands with Rowling and campaigns against trans kids going to the bathroom, too, before you decide to stan). She wrote four episodes, two part stories for the third and fourth series.
Moffat went around asking for women to write the show but has talked about having a hard time finding people who he wanted and were interested. When he did finally get Catherine Tregenna and Sarah Dollard in for the ninth series, he even mentioned Tregenna had been asked before, having "turned us down in the past, but I talked her into it with an idea she really liked." Dollard for her part ended up contributing two episodes for the ninth and tenth series, and was joined in the latter by Rona Munro, who became the only person to write both the classic and new series.
Chris Chibnall’s era of Doctor Who foregrounded giving a break to new talent unlike RTD and Moffat who tended to get established writers. That meant getting the first poc to write Who as well as seven women in Malorie Blackman, Joy Wilkinson, Nina Metevier, Charlene James, Maxine Alderton, and Ella Road. That said unlike Davies and Moffat he cowrote with most of them, with only three episodes in his run credited solely to women.
Directors fare better, with series 1 and 2 under Davies and series 6 and 7 under Moffat being the only series of Doctor Who not having episodes directed by women. Rachel Talalay of course deserves a special shout-out for being the definitive Moffat/Capaldi director and being the only woman to direct finales (for series 8, 9, and 10!) or Christmas specials for the series!
Hiring people from marginalized groups is always a struggle we can all do better on, especially in industries that are overwhelmingly dominated by white dudes. To put it on the shoulders of one man for failing when he put work in to fix that because Tumblr has a hate boner is deeply silly.

SWEETEST THING. robin buckley.
summary: robin hates coffee. one of the baristas could change that.
warning: fluff. nervous ramble. profanities.
word count: 1.4k
a/n: this is my first fic <33 this is also a repost because it wouldn't appear in the tags :(( hope you like it!
steve was really confused as to why robin pulled up in a coffee shop during their break.
“robin, what are we doing here?” stopping the car engine, robin replies with a whisper, “remember the girl i told you about? the one i bumped into at the school library? yeah, she works here.”
steve still confused, “oh yeah you couldn’t shut up about her,” steve rolled his eyes. “and she works here? here? a coffee shop?” robin nods. “but you HATE coffee!” robin looks at steve with an i know look.
just the thought of coffee made robin’s stomach churn, she never liked the taste of coffee, she always thought it was bitter.
“also why are you whispering?”
“i don’t know. what if she hears us?”
“she’s so far away!”
“i don’t know steve what if she DOES”
the two finally decided to exit the car and head inside where they were welcomed by you.
the smell of coffee hitting robin made her nose scrunch. but her eyes lit up the moment she saw you.
you with your warm smile, uniform, brown apron, hair in a low bun, saying something about how you’ve ran out of chocolate chips to your co-worker.
her knees felt weak when she saw your glowing smile. one of the reasons why she couldn’t take her eyes off you. it’s like your smile could light up a whole town. you were pure sunshine.
“robin!” steve called out. “yeah?” finally realizing that it was her turn to order. “oh uhm hi..” she smiled. “1 strawberry donut, th-the one with sprinkles.” you type it down on the register and looked at her to continue. god she’s so beautiful. can we talk about her frec-
robin panicked when she said she wanted the one with sprinkles. what if you thought she was weird? are sprinkles for kids? is it bad she didn’t order coffee?
“and one americano for me.” you look back at steve whom you didn’t even notice if he hadn’t spoken up. you were trying so hard to not stare at robin, it would be really weird if she would notice.
“that’ll be 8.99. paper or plastic?” you ask.
“really? robin buckley went here?” your co-worker, denise asked you.
“yes, denise. she went here and she ordered a donut.” you found it adorable. she looked really cute today, you think she just came from work based on the fact she was with steve, and she was wearing that cute video store uniform with the vest and the necktie...
“she doesn’t like coffee though,” denise said, pulling you from your thoughts.
“remember last year when i gave coffee to my class on the first day of our exams, she said she didn’t like coffee. so i gave the extra one to you even though i already gave you one. hence, you being introduced to the robin buckley.” she narrates before taking a bite of her glazed donut.
“then me still having a crush on her a year later.” you groan. “man, this is hard. i’m not even sure if she likes girls. what if she’s dating steve? oh god i hope not. i saw steve flirt with someone at the store a week ago.”
“chill out, they’re not dating. i swear.” she gives you a smile. “just ask her out. c’mon you’ve liked her for a year. staring at her isn’t gonna get you anywhere. she says no, then no. she says yes, then okay! you’ve got yourself a girl. but if you don’t say anything, this will be just another thing on your “what if” list. your choice, girlie.” she finishes off before walking out to the counter, your breaks finally over.
you roll your eyes at the nickname. denise has a point though. and in terms of love and relationships, denise has always been the expert.
fine, i’ll ask her out. you thought to yourself before finishing your cup of coffee.
“hi, welcome to bake & brew! what can i get ya?” you look to guy in-front of the register. steve harrington.
“hey y/n. 1 americano and…. a strawberry donut with sprinkles.” he says handing you dollar bills.
“is robin with you?” he shakes his head. noticing your face fall with disappointment.
“she’s at the video store, she took her break early so….” you nod, trying to hide the fact that you are sad over the fact that you don’t get to see her.
“did you wanna see her?” steve asked which made your eyes widen. “i- uh- well- the thing is…” you clear your throat. well shit, this is embarrassing. “yeah, i was going to ask her something.” you say trying to keep a straight face.
you hand steve his order as he nods slowly. “yeah well, you can come by the video store anytime, we’re open ‘til 6. pretty sure she wants to ask you something too. ” he gives you a reassuring smile, before walking off.
oh my god. that was all your mind has thought about for the last 4 hours. what did robin want to talk to me about? do you think she noticed when i’d stare at her? goddamnit why do i even stare at her? oh right because she’s gorgeous, she’s amazing, and she’s one of the nicest people i’ve ever met. oh goooooood.
you found your job to be the most boring thing today. looking over at the wall clock every chance you get, wishing for time to pass by very fast. you planned on going there when your shift finishes.
tick. tick. tick. tick. the clock struck 5.
“goodluck!” your co-worker denise shouts at you as you exit the coffee shop. turning the corner to run to the parking lot.
only to bump into robin buckley herself.
“sorry i-“
“oh god i’m-“
you stare at each other. both speechless.
“i’m sorry, i- i was in a hurry. i was going to the video store actually! uhm i wanted to talk to you about something.” you say running a hand through your hair. hoping she wouldn’t notice your nervousness.
“i know. steve told me and i couldn’t think straight for the past i don’t know like 4 hours. my mind is like everywhere. am in trouble? do you think i’m weird?” she sighs. “the thing is-“ she rambles, fiddling with her fingers.
you stare at her eyes. “i like you, robin.” you blurt out. finally.
“what?” robin looks at you with wide eyes, looking around, then looking back at you, eyes full of hope. hope that you weren’t kidding. that this wasn’t some sort of prank.
“i like you. ever since the day, you said no to coffee that denise offered you. she gave that coffee to me instead.” you laugh. “i asked her what it was for and she told me “oh buckley didn’t want it.” and i asked who buckley was and she..” you were rambling at this point hoping she would stop you. reject you, reciprocate your feelings, you didn’t know as long as she would make you stop because right now you wish the floor would swallow you.
you sit down at the bench in front of you.
robin follows. “i like you too.” robin says quickly. staring at you with that spark in her eyes. smiling at you, oh so beautifully. “since the day you bumped into me at the library. you were rushing to your locker because i think you were supposed to meet a friend and i didn’t say a thing because well, i thought you were straight.”
“do you.. do you wanna get ice cream sometime? or a movie, whatever you want.” smiling at her. “that was what i was gonna ask you originally but you just- i couldn’t help it okay?” you laugh. reaching out for her hand, which she immediately gives.
robin laughs. “well, how could i say no to that pretty face.” she loves how you look right now. the sunset in the background. you, being here with her, finally confessed your feelings to each other. she wished this moment would never end.
after minutes of sitting there, it started to get dark. you offered to bring robin home, to which she agreed.
“hey, thanks for dropping me off.” she smiles, holding your hand. “yeah, no problem.”
you stare into her eyes, then her lips. god, i badly want to kiss her right now. “you’re staring.” “oh- i- sorry” you nervously say.
she giggles. “can i kiss you?” robin asks to which you nod to.
kissing robin buckley in your car at 6 in the evening on a random summer day was one of the things you least expected to happen this summer.
kissing you was something robin buckley didn’t expect to happen. you tasted like mint & coffee.
she hated coffee, it was bitter. but the taste of coffee mixed with your lips, was the sweetest thing.

JUDGES
Flavia Z Drago
acclaimed illustrator Emily Gravett;
Martin Salisbury, Professor of Illustration at Cambridge School of Art in Anglia Ruskin University; and
Nikki Bi Co-Founder and the Beyond Books Lead at Civic Square in Birmingham.
The panel will be chaired by Julia Eccleshare, director of the children’s programme of the Hay Festival.
For the second consecutive year, over fifty books were submitted and from 34 different publishing houses, proof of publishers’ commitment to commissioning and developing new illustrators. 24 have made it onto the longlist.
Julia Eccleshare says: “Providing their first experience of books and reading, picture books are vital to children’s development, opening up the world and providing all-important early encounters with art and story. It is always exhilarating therefore to consider the books submitted for the Klaus Flugge Prize and we are delighted to have received so many entries this year and to be celebrating these exciting, talented newcomers. The prize is international in scope, with illustrators from many different countries represented here, and publishers large, small and tiny. Our thanks as always to Klaus Flugge for his generous sponsorship and ongoing support for new picture book talent.”
