Happy Birthday Scottish actor James MacPherson born on March 18th 1960.
MacPherson was born and raised in Hamilton, he attended Hamilton Grammar School leaving aged 17 he worked as a laboratory technician at Southern General Hospital for five years and contemplated a career as a police officer before turning to acting.
He joined an amateur dramatic group in Motherwell, before moving on to a repertory theatre in East Kilbride and a place in drama school.
It was after MacPherson landed the part of Hugh Hamilton in a BBC Radio play that his television career began to take off. While he was based in London MacPherson auditioned for a part in the children’s series Dramarama, but was unsuccessful. Then, in 1986, his agent told him about a part that had come up in Taggart and, after he regained his Glasgow accent, which had been diluted by working in London, he was offered the part.
Since leaving Taggart, he has concentrated on theatre with forays into TV and radio. He played the part of Esmé Stewart in King Jamie (James VI) and the Angel, a mini series aimed at the younger generation, from 2002, and shot on location at Stirling Castle, want to know who Esmé was? Use the search box I have posted about him before.
Theatrical appearances include panto, Address Unknown at The Tron, and the stage version of Dial M for Murder with Faye Tozer of Steps. In 2014, he narrated Sir Alex Ferguson’s autobiography as well as providing the voice for Ian Rankin’s Rebus in the talking book series. It was even reported in a Scottish newspaper in 2003 that James wanted to become an astronomer!
James lives in Bearsden with his wife Jacqueline and their three children. His co-star Mark MacManus was godfather to to MacPherson’s daughter Katie, his last acting credit was for an episode of Still Game in 2019.
