Penname: Delta Wise [Sinners]
Tumblr media
authors note: a quick concept I thought up after seeing the movie.
summary: 'Knotty' James owns an apothecary by day, by night she's a bestselling author who writes supernatural black novels under the name. Delta Wise. It's her deepest secret but secrets don't last for the living.
word-count: 1.9K
Knotty
I spent the first eight summers of my life next to my grandmother's rocking chair. She was the only person that was rooted enough not to leave. There was nowhere else for her to go. I was helping her cook by six and then cooking for the both of us by eight. I watched as my parents and cousins dismissed her stories, warnings and tales for nonsense but they always felt true to me where it counted. I wrote down all her stories of life in Chicago and then recorded the rest when I was old enough to have a tape recorder. I was at the retirement community just as much as I was at school. She spoke life over me and she loved me hard. By the time she died I was fifteen and ready for the world with the wisdom of two lifetimes. I was different and people could tell.
What grandma always told me was that a good woman knew how to keep a secret. I have more than my fare share. What my family doesn’t know is that granny’s stories have made me rich. While they think I’m an oddball apothecary owner with peculiar habits. Truth is I’ll never have to make another sale to survive. The doctors and the lawyers look down on me but pride isn’t safe. Neither is the glory of recognition. Grandma's stories were real, so it’s very likely the monsters in my stories are too.
I search through my closet for something that won’t make them all look down on me too much. I make sure my figure is on display to give them something to talk about as I set my locks free from their braids. The waves cascade to my mid back. I opt for more discrete protections today slipping on pure silver rings and cuffs. Every major artery is adorned with silver from my head to my toes. I slip on a pair of boots. I pull on a light jacket to cover my back. I look at the sun setting and finish my garlic tea with a colonial silver supplement before grabbing my bag and getting into the car.
I don’t make being out after sunset a habit. But Uncle Larry is sick and it’s imperative we party before he goes. He’s grandma's younger brother from her father’s second wife. A proud man that’s done everything to leave Mississippi behind him. When I arrive at the venue there’s a cascade of cars out front. Luxury vehicles that tell the tale of triumph and resistance. When I enter, Kaya is playing the piano and I instantly feel underdressed.
“Come on Knotty, I got you” Carmen smiles, meeting me at the door. We’re equal outsiders because people don’t quite know what to think of me. They think she’s a whore like our great grandmother Pearl who ran off one evening and never came back. Only I know what a blessing that was to everyone that she went up in flames at sunrise. Grandma said she never forgot the man with the scar who’d come by to tell her daddy Pearl was gone and the fantastic tale.
“So how are sales going at the shop?” She asks.
“Good” I smile as she fusses with my hair.
“Well I have a steady trick I don’t have to do anything for now so if you need anything ask.” She says and I smile.
“Thanks Carmen,” I tell her.
“I swear it’s good money,” she says, misreading my smile.
“I believe you” I nod. I do believe her because I’m the trick. Carmen has always been kind so instead of whispering about the onlyfans link in a group chat like everyone else I made an account. I send her money and bible verses because she’s never taken the money from me otherwise. Because to ‘trick’ like I do I’d need more than apothecary.
“I think I’m gonna quit soon. I almost have enough saved up to make a record. I’ve been taking lessons and my voice is ready. And I have enough to make a really nice music video.” She says, making me smile.
“You were ready before those lessons but I’m happy to hear and if you need anything don’t hesitate to reach out” I tell her.
“What about you and writing? Haven’t seen you with a dreamy eye gleam in front of a computer in a long time” she says and I smile.
“I wrote a herbology and healing book” I remember.
“No no, knotty. Like the big stories you used to tell when we were kids.” She says starting on my makeup.
“What about them?”
“Remember? It’s singing and you’d dream up these amazing ideas for music videos or backgrounds?” She asks like I could forget.
“I do but the apothecary and my garden takes a lot of time” I remind her and she nods.
“Well I think you should take it seriously. If you were that good then. I can imagine about now” she smiles.
“What are you not saying Carmen?” I ask, sensing there’s more to it. She sighs, taking a kindle from her purse. I see my book cover as the Home Screen.
“When someone spends fifty grand on me in a year I investigate.” She says without saying. “I don’t know what’s wrong with you Knotty you’re incredibly successful and you let everyone look down on you. You pay me a salary and never ask for a thank you” she says, far smarter than the rest of them.
“How do the tips trace back?” I ask.
“They didn't. I read the first book a few years ago and it felt like one of Grandma's stories. This last one. That was confirmation. Who could forget the twins?” She whispers.
“Carmen”
“I won’t tell,” she says, swallowing hard. “I won’t” she repeats showing me a silver necklace from Grandma.  “But they’re as excellent as everyone says they are. The minute you let me brag on you I will.” She says but I shake my head.
“Not while they’re still out there”
“But Grandma said they all died” Carmen says.
“She did but you never know” I nod, keeping the rest of the truth from her. The letter I found dated October 17th 1992. From Sammy Scarface himself stating he saw Stack and he didn’t look a day older than the night he died. That Mary was by his side. Mary who was partially to blame for how that night went. Otherwise they would’ve been inside until sunrise.
“Okay miss mystery, we’ll reconvene this later. Just wear this dress and shoes I got you.” She says and I relent slippering into a silver number that better matches the occasion with matching shoes. My clothes are folded and I follow her out of the room and back into the party room.
I’m showered with compliments about my dress and presentation all thanks to Carmen. I take pictures with uncle Larry. When the party’s over I get to my car when I hear someone call me but I don’t listen. I start my engine and head home. When I do I head in backwards like grandma said I should and run a bath before going to bed.
———
I clean up the apothecary after hours knowing I have extra protections in my veins for a little longer. I head to my car as the sunsets and hear someone calling again.
“Hey now! Did I just see you lock up the apothecary. My granny told me I need to get her some fresh dandelion and camomile.” A man says and I step into a sunstreak before looking back to where he stands under the shade of the shops. Brown skin, minimal facial hair, full lips with a hint of a smirk and sunglasses to cover his eyes. He makes me feel uneasy. But I something in me makes me walk towards him. The protection bag tucked in my chest tugs at me. As my silver feels like it starts to hum. But as I get closer it’s like my aura pushes him back. His chain and rings are gold. I open the door stepping in and he does too. No doubt he’s probably already charmed a member of my staff.
“Chamomile and Dandelion? How much?” I ask.
“Eight ounces each” he says and I grab the bags.
“Who’s your grandmother, I don’t think I’d hear the end of a grandson so handsome. The elders are proud people” I smile, flirting.
“Just passing through, she’s out and has a nightly tea ritual” he lies like they all do.
“That’ll be $100” I tell him and he gets a money clip from his pocket instead of pulling out a phone or credit card to pay. He fails my final test when he can’t place the money in my hand. I close the till and grab my key when a woman enters the doorway. She sashays in glaring at me.
“What’s taking so long baby?” She asks and I should be shitting myself but I’m not. She’s wearing sunglasses too.
“Nothing. I got the goods for Granny” he says holding up the bags to her.
“Heard her flirting” she says making no effort to conceal the impossible. I pretend not to hear from behind the counter and fasten the crossbow around my arm. My belled sleeves cover it and I move from the counter.
“Thanks for your help.” The man smirks.
“Hope your grandmother enjoys her tea” I respond as they file out. I make it to my car fine but I don’t head home. Instead I head to Momma Meringue and she’s standing on her porch when she sees me. Old habit causes her to head into her home. The door is left open as a test and I walk right in after cutting my car off. Her home is full of skylights.
“I think I met Stack and Mary an hour ago,” I confess.
“You did,” she says, showing me a severely patina’d silver cuff. She raises my sleeve and I see my twin pair look just the same. She removes it from me, dropping it into a jewelry cleaner.
“What do they look like?” She asks. And I tell her until there are two perfect pencil sketches. Momma M blinks in rapid succession.
“An unrequited love spell” she says. “The girl's heart was pure until …” her eyes close and she pauses. “He didn’t come back and she learned her husband's bed couldn’t compare to him. She asked for forever and got her wish - not in any way she would have predicted though” Momma finishes.
“Hmm, she was jealous today,” I share.
“Careful he likes a chase. Love spells don’t change men. He misses his brother but is too much of a survivor to consider anything else”
“Any advice? “
“Close the store for a week. Request a new deed, resign and tell your employee’s not to engage with anyone unless they’re inside the store upon reopening.” She says.
“Here’s some silver lotion for the moonlight” she says and I obey because the elders have never steered me wrong. I wash up and sleep at Mama Meringues house but before I go to bed I commit to writing in my journal like my grandmother would have - continuing her story. Then I take photos uploading the pages to the cloud so they can be with hers.

tags from @twlvie : EXAAAAAAACTLY. People need to move beyond writing/portraying Tuvok as just 'Stock Vulcan' or 'Janeway's Long Suffering Friend' because he actually has several things deeply wrong with him that perfectly compliment the several things deeply wrong with her and analyzing their relationship is very fun. Alot of the time I see him portrayed as just 'Vulcan Who is Wise'/'Janeway's Long Suffering Friend' in fandom but his actual personality means so much to me because Janeway DOES like him very much and he DOES return those feelings to the point that he calls her his friend several times [despite claiming that Vulcans don't have friends], calls her 'irreplaceable', allows her to touch him but rarely touches her back. Janeway says she's never minded the distance between her and her crew before the delta quadrant. All of these things are interesting. They have such a strange and specific combination of intimacy and distance in their relationship due to their near consummate professionalism and commitment to rules, regulations, what they should and should not do interpersonally which they both stick to like a code of honor regardless of their own personal desires. Tuvok must behave a certain way as he is Vulcan and Janeway must behave a certain way as she is Captain. They're both sort of looking to one another for reassurance but that gaze has become corrupted wherein Tuvok agrees with her because she's the captain [this comforts him, if it's an order from the captain it's 'right' to carry it out] and Janeway takes his agreement as a moral thumbs up [this comforts her, if the approval comes from Tuvok it must be the right thing to do] even though he's stated and demonstrated to others that he'd follow her orders regardless. Tuvok never thinks of himself as suffering beside a silly reckless human - it's implied that this may have been the case when they first met but they are decades past that point now. Now they are going to kill that goddamn whale together if it's the last thing they do. "If it's you, I can do anything" they think, looking at each other, and a finger on the monkey's paw begins to curl.
People honestly portray Tuvok as far too "rolling his eyes, reluctantly going along with Janeway's silly little shenanigans" - he's literally so serious about being right there with her on every decision she makes. Janeway's like "I'm going to stay behind if the ship blows up" and Tuvok's like "I'm staying with you." Janeway's like "I'm going to deliver every member of the Equinox crew into the jaws of death via an alien revenge massacre" and Tuvok protests a grand total of one time before being fully on the bridge assisting her. He was the only one with her when she made the decision to honor the caretaker's wishes and save the Ocampa, dooming them all. He was willing to get court marshalled in order to fulfill a wish she couldn't grant by her own hand: Get them home [no matter what happens to me] <- wherein 'me' is Tuvok. This was the same wish that spurred him forward when he had to leave her on that planet and everyone left thought him cold for trying to fulfill it without her when in his mind it was akin to a dying wish, the last thing she'd ever express to him: Get them home [no matter what happens to me.] <- wherein 'me' is Janeway. He told Seven that the golden rule to follow is that the captain is "ALWAYS RIGHT" <- (His ACTUAL words) and when Seven asks if the captain should be followed even if someone KNOWS she's wrong he says "Perhaps." This man is perhaps the most ride or die dude in the universe about Janeway. Despite her labeling him her 'moral compass' he is by NO means impartial or unbiased. He'd defend her to his last breath. He canonically makes detailed psychological observations about her and has for years. He accounts for her luck when calculating the success of certain plans. It's implied in 'Twisted' that Janeway typically listens to Tuvok's suggestions and follows them nearly without fail - to the point that he's surprised and obviously irritated when Chakotay doesn't. Despite this they've been inside one another's quarters so infrequently that Tuvok can remember each instance. They call each other "Captain" and "Mr. Tuvok" even though they've known each other for twenty years. There's something wrong with them.
#Tuvok/Janeway#Tuvok#Kathryn Janeway#who's DOING it like THEM???? NO ONE!!! <3#'he WANTS to be there' <- EXAAACTLY!!!! he was literally jealous of Chakotay for being her right hand instead of him#Also Janeway is not a silly little reckless woman stumbling around who the boys shake their heads at - it must be said#<- the other dimension of how wrong this interpretation of their relationship is#He respects her a great deal and that respect is returned in full. He wouldn't follow her if he thought she was silly. When he meets people#he thinks are silly he gets so irritated - this is SERIOUS to him#He says [in an incident completely separate to the psychological observations one] that he's been 'observing her behavior' since#Voyager got stuck in the delta quadrant [the psych obsv were happening pre-delta quad]. WHy is he doing this????#I know [general you] are gonna say like 'security reasons' but I KNOOOWW he's just doing this with Janeway I know in my HEART this is true#Tuvok says Janeway can be reckless and stubborn and unorthodox but he also seems to respect those traits#calling them both her greatest strengths and weaknesses as a leader. aaagh imsorry I just love them so much#They're so INTERESTING and it's so BORING to portray them as like: Bumbling Woman Is Reckless and Wise Man Shake His Head#would [general you] delve deeper into whatever weird shit's going on with Tuvok & Janeway if she was a man or he was white?#I simply MUST ask#I loved these tags they hit the nail on the head so beautifully. They're gonna catch that WHALE!!!!#Also please don't take this as me saying they don't do stupid reckless shit together - they absolutely one million percent do#<3 But to me more than Janeway being 'reckless' she has a 'ruthless' - ness to her that is very compelling#a double edged sword <3 she's GONNNAAA kill that WHALE and Tuvok's gonna be there every step of the way#fandom underrepresents how serious Janeway is#both she and Tuvok have that weird 'too close but too distant' thing going on that's so difficult to describe and I love it <3#chara analysis

I almost forgot, but the person that comment-reviewed EB also asked others their "in series relation ranking," and someone ranked the whole of SaGa 1-3 above SSG, and someone questioned them on that. It was kind of hilarious to me, but I also agree! And specifically, they couldn't believe that someone ranked SaGa 3 above SSG (or maybe any game!). That makes me wanna bust a rib from laughing so hard! But it's also kind of annoying.
Whenever people say they like Unlimited SaGa or SaGa 3, people act like they're freaks or have to have so many stipulations. And the funny thing is, this person ranked SaGa 1-3 so well because it is an old school JRPG with towns, NPCs and the like. And I feel that! People rag on SaGa 3 a lot, especially if it's the GB version, but it does actually feel more fully fledged and fleshed out to me than EB does in many ways. (Shocking!) But if that's one thing I hate about SaGa fandom (nowadays), is that you're not allowed to like the black sheep titles half the time.

Okay I could totally see this.
Besides, by the way Delta was talking when she put them in jail in the movie, she sounded like she was literally putting them in time out. With the added effect of Clampers literally giggling and bragging about how they’re in trouble. Literally how a child would do that.
Idk just some thoughts.
So I was watching the Born to Die clip cuz I just adore Delta's voice and realized something. I think the reason Delta may have been so offended was because the Pop Trolls had effectively crashed a funeral! We see that at the end of the song there's an old man who has a heart attack on screen and falls into a coffin, in the credits we see that same old man's ghost. If Delta was dating JD at some point she had to now what Pop sounds like and enjoy it, so chances are the reason she called the pop medley a "crime agaisnt music" wasn't because she didn't like the song but rather because the time and place for "Who let the Dogs Out" is absolutely not going to be at a funeral!
Oh, you can bet she was offended. Even John knew how to read the vibe of an area so he wouldn't accidentally offend anyone with his music. I honestly think that Branch's family are the only pop trolls of that generation that can tell when something is appropriate or not.
I'm pretty sure that Peppy gave Poppy a bit of a scolding when he found out that she unintentionally disrespected the dead

What are the ages do you think are for the senses?
(Sorry for the bad English or if it doesn't make a whole lot of sense)
To be completely honest, I never thought of the very specific ages they have, only the ranges of where they’d be
But I can still become specific >:)
All ages mentioned would be in the supposed present day
Nightmare: 520 y/o
Dream: he’s a bit of a complicated case considering his entrapment in stone, cause it stopped him from aging mentally, breaking out of it with the mental capacity of a 6 y/o still, but physically he never truly stopped aging, considering the fact he was still alive during his entrapment
He was trapped for 500 years, then took another 14 years out of stone, so physically he’d be the same age as Nightmare, at 520, but mentally, he’d be 20 y/o
Killer: 38 y/o, but it’ll be fun to consider the resets when it comes to how it affects his age
Murder: 37 y/o, would also be interesting to consider the resets and how they affect him age wise
Horror: 46 y/o, he’s a bit older considering his story already takes place 7 years after a neutral ending
Here’s a messy timeline i guess chchhc (don’t take it too seriously I haven’t thought of the linear timeline much, there could be inconsistencies)
Tumblr media
Color: he’s also a bit of a complicated case, he was erased and trapped in the void pretty young at 27, and I like to think the void is pretty much timeless, time has no meaning in it, so Color’s age stopped at 27 y/o physically till he broke out of the void, mentally however, he never stopped aging
He broke out somewhere around 10 years after Dream broke out of stone, the moment he broke out he resumed aging again, how the void affects his aging after he broke out is something that I’d like to explore, but for the sake of this ask and simplicity so we won’t go insane, he’d be 31 y/o physically, mentally, he no longer has a concept of which age he’d be
Delta: 31 y/o
Epic: same as canon, 45 y/o
Cross: 29 y/o
Ink: same as canon, ageless, mentally in his 20s, specifically between 25-27 y/o
Swap: he’d be the eldest of the Stars at 37 y/o
Geno: 50 y/o
Error: 50 y/o mentally, physically can not age anymore since turning into an error
Fresh: ageless, 45 y/o mentally

WAIT WINGDINGS LAB COAT HAS THE DELTA RUNE ON THE BACK LOL. I didn't realize that until just now. I thought Wingdings didn't believe in the prophecy? But now that I think about it, I can't remember where I saw that, so I might have assumed incorrectly. Actually, all three of them have that symbol on their coats, right? Why is it there? Why isn't it on Alphys's lab coat in the present? Why would they get rid of it? (Or maybe it is, I just realized that Alphys hasn't appeared in the comic yet) Sorry to bother you!
Wingdings has the full symbol because he is the royal scientist!!
He works for the royal family, and what do Asgore and Toriel share in their designs? The deltarune symbol!
I felt it was appropriate for him to have it too + It works story-wise too! Because....you know...Gaster...Angel...Player...delatrune...yeah...
Sans and Alphys only have a part of the symbol because their position isn't as high as Wingdings'
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the future, when Alphys became royal scientist, she would have the full symbol!!

I finished playing Republic Commando for the first time and have some thoughts to share (: Beware, there be spoilers!
Alright so first of all, I'm a fan, and I think I'm gonna be obsessed with the boys from Delta Squad. Mind you, I haven't read the RepComm books yet, but I have the fullest intention to do so (they're patiently waiting to be taken off their shelves).
To start with, I've really enjoyed picking up gaming again. I've been gaming (mostly Playstation) since I was about 10 years old, and it's always been one of my favourite hobbies, so I'd totally call myself a gamer. Due to adulting, I hadn't gamed for over a year. So picking up my controller to finally game again was such a good feeling <3
So I've seen a lot of art featuring Delta Squad here on Tumblr, so that obviously piqued my interest. Reason number one to finally play this game is definitely @deltasquadweek , because I needed some sort of reference to participate, and what better option than the source material?
Look at me rambling; I haven't even properly talked about the actual game yet. To be fair, I'm really bad with giving a substantiated opinion review-wise, and I'm really bad with analysing stuff. So this won't be a review or analysis, it will just be another Lupe ramble, I guess.
The Game™️
So the game was awesome! I know it just hit its 20 year anniversary, and it obviously has 2005 graphics, but that's alright and I can definitely look through it because I know it's from that year and it actually feels nostalgic (I used to play a lot of Star Wars Battlefront II during my childhood, which also released in 2005). The story was pretty cool, although it had some bigger time gaps with missions jumping through the Clone Wars. I wouldn't have minded more missions, but that's mainly because I would have liked to see more of the boys. (Also detail: I played on Medium difficulty, which was the default setting)
Geonosis was awesome, despite the Geonosians being swift and slimy buggers which were hard to kill in melee, because of them being so.. Swift and slimy. I love that this first mission was right at the start of the war, and now we know how much Delta Squad contributed to the war effort. The last level (the timed one; was this the infamous Belly of the Beast?) was pretty hard and it took me a few times to beat it, but I was super happy to get all four boys out of Geonosis alive.
The ghost ship/RAS Prosecutor mission was pretty scary at some points haha, gave me some Alien (1979) vibes, especially with the face hugging scavenger droids. I have mentioned before on my blog that I'm a wimp when it comes to the horror genre, but I made it out unharmed - again, like the boys. (Although those Trandoshans scared the kark out of me a few times; it had some good jump scares!)
Unfortunately the Trandoshans returned in the Kashyyyk mission, as was expected - but so did the Geonosians, which was a pretty unpleasant surprise. Especially because they kicked our shebs with their elite warriors when they appeared out of kriffing nowhere. How rude. I definitely struggled the most with the Kachirho Bridge mission, because those insufferable SBDs kept killing us. I found it ironically hilarious that the level was called 'A Bridge Too Far', my inner history nerd really appreciated that fact.
I wish I could say I got all boys out of Kashyyyk too, but everyone who played the game knows that doesn't happen. I knew Sev wouldn't make it out with his squad before starting the game, because I guess it's hard to stay away from spoilers for 20 years. It just.. The fact that I knew it would happen, didn't make it easier? Because now I've seen the boys, their personalities and their dynamics, so now it makes it harder. Boss' determination to get Sev out, Fixer's practical answer based on regulation, Scorch's devastation.. Kriff Yoda.
BUT one thing I learned from watching Game of Thrones is that if you don't see someone dying on screen, they don't have to be truly dead (and sometimes when they die on screen, they come back anyway). Right? Right?!?
(Kriff, I wish they'd made that sequel game)
Alright alright, happy thoughts, happy thoughts.. 🧘🏻‍♀️ Yes, Delta Squad! I'd just like to say: I love all of them, obviously. But Scorch is probably my favourite? Although Sev is just <333 And Boss, but.. I can't leave Fixer out now, can I??
I love how they all have their own strengths and skills, and I loved how the game made use if it through the commands feature. It worked pretty well (although I only figured out how to use it on PS4 after Geonosis) and it was a really fun way to move around with computer-controlled characters.
The Blorbos™️
Scorch is just so much fun, I had to laugh at almost every comment he made. I loved his enthusiasm and his dynamics with the others, especially with Sev <3 And Sev is just amazing, I fell for him the moment I heard him talk for the first time. I also love the bloody paint decoration on his armour and his hunter/predator vibe, especially with the sniping. Oh my <3 I loved how Fixer was totally different, maybe a bit more of a follower of the rules, but definitely not less badass because of it. And Boss.. Well I did fall for Sev's voice, but if you let Temuera Morrison voice a clone, you have my vote. And he was Boss alright, since the others had such respect for him and followed all his orders without a doubt.
I'm actually really looking forward to diving into some Delta Squad headcanons, and of course more art and hopefully some fics too! And I can't wait to start creating some Delta Squad content myself!
Alright, have a Commando Cookie if you made it this far 🍪 Count me in as a Republic Commando fan, I'm definitely gonna obsess about it more and more and it's gonna be my hyperfixation (RepComm) within a hyperfixation (TCW) within a hyperfixation (Star Wars). So I guess you'll be seeing me around simping over anything RepComm/Delta Squad (and hopefully the books next) 🫡

Ough god i have to draw quints tomorrow its fate i tell u its fate
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
more quintessence ghouls in their natural forms <3 Based off my headcanon that quints come from a completely separate place from the Pits called the Void, where literally only their small subspecies of ghoul can survive. They just adapted to have no physical form to be able to handle the immense pressure and sheer cold. They're just large masses of light that have pseudo-nerves so they can interact with each other.
its goofy and weird but idk it's fun to ponder glowy light guys
dont ask me why omega looks like that btw, i dont have an answer

Sinners Spoilers/Thoughts
This isn't everything, but a few moments and thought I have about some of what happened. SPOILERS ARE UNDER THE CUT
I'm going to start with one of the "scariest" sentences in the dialogue and why it was "scary"
Remmick's - "Give me Sammy" line!
We know (plot twist) the Klan sells them the building and plan to come at dawn to kill them and take it back. The reason Remmick's line is scary is because the KKK used to do that. Historically, they would go to these homes and either ask or take by force whoever they were looking for in that house. My family has one of these stories. I was told they came looking for a great uncle of mine. Didn't find him thankfully.
Delta Slim - Audio played a very important role in this movie. I don't mean music wise. When Delta was telling the story of his friend, you could HEAR in the background the screams of him being beaten and hung.
Sammy playing guitar - The fusion of African cultures and music. The twerk in the juke joint, the African tribal dances! The ballerina! The asian dancer to represent the blend of cultures (Grace & Bo). The burn the house down (literally) metaphor turned visualization. I need whatever that mix is for my playlist.
Non Blk People - Grace was an example of how non black people can fuck up our spaces. Mary was more of an example of how a white woman can easily turn on and fuck up our shit. but Grace? She basically said fuck y'all and did what she wanted because in the end they won’t listen to us.
Devil Went Down To Georgia (Reference) - I don’t know if this was intentional but Remmick wanted Sammy’s soul basically and DWDTG is a song about a fiddle player outsmarting the Devil who if not beaten would take the fiddle player soul.
Choctaw - The opening sequence explains how music can blur the lines between realities. However, it's not just African culture that has vampire lore and it's a nod to other cultures and their urban legends.

DUNE AU DAMIAN WAYNE X READER PART TWO
Mild Brutalia
Fem reader
Notes: Under no circumstances should opinions expressed by characters be linked to this author in anyway. This is written in the style of Frank Hebert’s book, this means spoilers for Dune. While inspired by Frank Herbert’s novel the plotline may be similar, however it will not be the same. The following work is apart of a series, the first few chapters will be slow.
Imperial terminology
Bene Gesserit: The ancient school of mental and physical training established primarily for female students after the Butlerian Jihad destroyed the so-called ‘thinking machines’ and robots.
Caladan: Third planet of Delta Pavonis.
Filmclip: An apparatus used mainly for training consisting of a shigawire imprint carrying a mnemonic pulse.
Faufreluches: The rigid imperial system of class stratification.
Spacing (Guild): Powerful organization which ad a monopoly on space travel and transport due to their Navigators.
Mating index: The Bene Gesserit master record of its human breeding program aimed at producing the Kwisatz Haderach.
Mentat: The class of imperial citizens trained for supreme accomplishments of logic. ‘Human computers’.
Sapho: High-energy liquid extracted from barrier roots of Ecaz. Used by Mentats who claim it amplifies mental powers. Users develop deep ruby stains on mouth and lips.
Not many could successfully trick the wise Duke Wayne, many speculated that he was secretly a Mentat due to his intelligence. It has been found that the House Napier (known as the Joker House) spread these rumours to sow dissent within House Wayne. However this did not have the intended impact. Those in House Wayne trusted their illustrious leader more, for if his wisdom was likened to one of a Mentat surely he would lead them down a righteous path.
Commentaries On The New Emperors Family- Empress Y/N
Damian was sitting at the round table in his training and study room, hunched over as his eyes roamed over books spread across the table like a mosaic.
“Damian, my son.” The Duke’s voice echoed ever so slightly in the empty room, Damian looked up at the sight of his father. He was dressed in his formal attire, wearing the colurs of House Wayne- deep blue and coal black.
“Father.” Damian couldn’t hide the excitement in his tone, he hoped his father would be open to the idea of him taking a Bene Gesserit Lady. The girl had been plaguing his thoughts all day, with each breath he took the outline of her visage passed through his head. Though the evidence for her being a Bene Gesserit was slightly shaky, Damian had faith his detective skills.
“Tell me how have your studies been?” The Duke asked in a gentle tone, the firmness of his formal tone absent from his voice. The Duke no longer stood in the doorway as he strode over to Damian and pulled out a chair next to the boy. “Lucius has been telling me that you’re excelling."
“Well I’ve been studying our political history with House Napier.” Damian did not hide his distaste, their feud with House Wayne was well known, “They always fight ruthlessly and with cunning, never have they moved without a meticulous plan. They must have the wisest of Mentat’s in their employ.” Damian knew he was just telling his Father information he knew all too well, but he intended to control the atmosphere of the conversation to favour his bid for a Bene Gesserit. Perhaps he could scare his father into giving him a Bene Gesserit, by convincing him of the necessity of one.
Damian continued on unfettered, “Lucius Fox has done and will continue to do an exemplary job in service of the House, however as I get older I’d like to be able to make more informed decisions with an advisor of my own. One well versed in politics to help me navigate the Imperium, therefore… I’d like to take a Bene Gesserit Lady.” Damian’s tone at the end of his little speech was tinged with nerves.
The silence that followed further tangled the nerves in Damian’s stomach and his posture further tightened. He remembered his mother’s guidance and begin reciting the Litany against Fear.
‘I must not fear, fear is the mind killer, fear is-'
“You’ve clearly thought about this.” The Duke spoke, nothing in his demeanour betraying his emotions.
“Every decision one makes must be well thought out.” Damian responded in kind.
“Have you explored other options? An advisor can come in many forms, what specifically draws you to the Bene Gesserit?” The Duke enquires.
“They have more than one use Father. Not only do the Bene Gesserit have a focus primarily on politics, which Mentat’s do not, they also have strong ties to the other Houses and Guild. They have impeccable espionage skills and are well trained fighters.” Damian had anticipated the question, therefore he already had a preplanned response.
The Duke nodded, once then twice.
“Your mother is a Bene Gesserit. I was opposed to them as a child, they seemed so unnatural and cynical. I couldn't stand their secretive nature. Lucius had to force me to agree to take one as an advisor. Yet when I met your mother I learnt to appreciate them in a completely new light. They were supernatural and assured, completely backed up by their plans and they were resolute in their endeavours. I’m proud of you son for being able to see the true beauty of the Bene Gesserit without needing as big of a shove as the one I had.”
Damian felt himself light up, “Thank you Father, I won’t let you down.”
The Duke placed a reassuring hand onto his son’s arm, “You never have Damian.”
The Duke soon enough left to go continue on his duties, leaving Damian preoccupied with the memory of his dream last night.
“What of the Faufreluches?” Damian recognised the girls voice as easily as talking was to a politician, he felt the winds of Caladan brushing the nape of his neck. “Tell me what you think.” The voice commanded, but not in a harsh manner, however the words were as firm as steel.
Damian was about to respond, but then he woke up.
Something was blocking this dream. No matter, he’d meet her soon enough.
Hope clouds all judgement, it is easy to block the most complex of hopes. Love clouds all judgement, it is not easy to block the very essence of love from thought making.
Lessons from the New Emperor- Empress Y/N
Damian was making a calculated effort to not showcase his complete and utter unrest. A glance at the clock told him he’d been sitting for a minute now, a minute too long. The girl was here somewhere.
The room itself was quietly beautiful. The carvings on the library shelf were shadowed and the orange light of the dawn cast the sharpest of shadows across Damian’s face.
The Bene Gesserit school itself had been checked by Lucius Fox. No traps or secrets lay within these walls to hurt the Ducal heir.
As time wared on, Bene Gesserit candidates came and went like the tides of the waves. Each encounter left him more and more agitated by the last.
While he was waiting for the next, he cleared his mind and took a few deep breaths. Damian focused on the facts he’d gathered from his dreams and inspected each with a detached manner. A seedling of doubt planted in Damian’s mind, had he deluded himself? Were his dreams just dreams? No, he uprooted the thought and cast it aside. Focus, he chided himself, you’re letting your emotions con-
“Would you like more tea, my grace?”
Damian flinched. That voice… he slowly turned in his chair to face the voice. It was her! It was the girl. Then panic set in. Her gentle smile was doing nothing to slow down the racing of his mind. Damian had been wrong.
The girl in front of him was a maid… a Bene Gesserit housekeeper. Not a Bene Gesserit.
Damian struggled to keep his anger leashed, at whom his anger was directed he could not decide.
“Are you not young to be servant?” Damian’s voice whipped out, slashing through the air.
The girl blushed at his brash question, “I am a handmaiden your grace, for whichever Bene Gesserit you chose.”
Was the girl in front of him deflecting?
The trader standing behind him cleared his throat, “Unless you’d prefer one from within your own house to serve the Bene Gesserit lady.” The trader shifted, practically squirming.
“No need, this one will do.” Damian replied instantaneously, “Yes I’d like more tea.”
At his words he turned back around, his fists clenched by his sides. How could he be so foolish, she was only wearing all black because she worked for the Bene Gesserit. What kind of a Duke does not explore all possibilities?
As the girl poured the tea and stepped back, Damian felt too many emotions at once. Quickly he shoved them all back and practiced the breathing techniques his mother had taught him. Till the roaring of his feelings dulled to mutterings.
The Bene Gesserit’s continued flittering in and out, till the last one came.
Damian felt a chill in the air, he straightened up ever so slightly and the trader sucked in a quiet breath. “This is Cassandra, she’s highly trained…,” as the trader continued Damian used the techniques his mother had taught him to assess the Bene Gesserit. Cassandra was very clearly an assassin, her posture was straight and her face impassive. She was not preening to him. In a way Cassandra reminded Damian of his mother- strong and cunning. Cassandra was as mysterious as the dark side of the moon, yet she had a wild fire raging within her and everyone knew wild fires were seldom contained once started.
Damian heard his mother’s voice in the back of his mind, ‘Forming attachments to those who could have the same opportunities is a weakness. That’s why no House ever produces more than one heir to the title. It’s best to prevent the feud between siblings and have a strong, decisive leadership.’
A pang shot through Damian’s heart and blossomed within, Cassandra would have received some of the same training as him and her demeanour mirrored his. Cassandra could be the sister Damian always needed in his life.
Damian ached for a sibling, something to take him away from the loss of the girl of his dreams.
Damian raised a hand, prompting the trader to stop, “That will be all. I will have Cassandra as my Bene Gesserit. The girl may be her handmaiden.” Damian said the second command with a sneer, still at odds with himself for not being able to distinguish, from all his dreams, that the girl was a maid. Damian had allowed his animal instincts to win out and in a way he’d failed. Damian had allowed himself to develop feelings for this girl he’d never met and now he had to face the consequences.
