I rewatched dekaranger and realized why didn't I fall in love with Akaza Banban sooner he's my precious trigger-happy bastard

Rewatching sukeban deka has been great so far (I have more appreciation now for the early intense shojo melodrama detective episodes before they veer off into pre-inventing kamen rider black, which is also good) but it does have the effect of making me constantly think about commando girl izumi, and play the commando girl izumi credits music in my head on repeat, and wish there were one hundred episodes of commando girl izumi

GODAI YUSUKE... a man full of many talents and a beautiful smile, he doesn't want to fight but has to protect all the smiles, he's a little stupid but not naive and strong hearted i'm just so hopelessly in love with him 😭👍

4. favorite secondary?

there are so many good secondaries/extra ranger there is not one i didn't love but hmm..... sakurai yuuto. many thoughts on him that i cannot coherently put down just know that he is Everything to me

10. favorite tie-in?

hmm... i don't have a ton of feelings on the movies bc most just make me go 'okay cool that was a movie i guess' the only ones i have gone back to rewatch are any den-o movies (except for deka) but especially the cho trilogy episodes red and blue aka: my favorite romance movies

Nov 26:

So I'm watching Dekaranger with a friend and so far i love them all? I forgot where we stopped, but friend knows. Anyway, some thoughts so far:

I watched Magi vs Deka first, so i got a strong whiplash with Ban (lol) -- especially his hair style. He's more loud in Deka.

Houji seems like the hard-boiled dude at first, but he's a walking mess and i love him. Also random English words because "Perfect".

Sen-chan is so adorable and smart, and funny. I didn't know he was the same person who sang Savers' 1st ED (which i love so much??)

I love Jasmine a lot, her comments and her funny nicknames and her special ability. She got the best comments ever in-series imo.

Umeko is so relatable, and cute and tiny... But strong, i want to be like her!!

Tetsu felt like a very cocky and serious dude in his debut episode, but turns out he's the junior-est of the juniors? I want to know more about him.

Boss (Kruger) is so cool, and a very dad-like alien. Swan is the biggest mom friend ever. I want Boss and Swan to smooch 😙

Speaking of Ban… I'm always concerned with him because he yells a lot ;o; Like, are you okay… Doesn't your throat hurt from yelling that much? But then in the Magi-Deka movie rewatch i was like "… he's not loud anymore…"

Sainei is so cool… 😮🥰

Still, i like Ban a lot for obvious reasons (lol) -- first it's the hair (really, if you saw the majority of characters i like who got that haircut...), and his personality is very *ahem* similar to most of my favorites. And he sounds a lot similar to Kizuna's Daisuke...

Nov 29:

Ban's getting less and less louder… He has a cool and pretty voice when he's not yelling… Now he only gets loud moderately.

Character development? Character development!!

Some of my favourite/recommended dekaranger episodes

I’d recommend that you watch the show in entirety to better understand the overarching story and general character development, but these were the episodes that stood out for me.

(spoiler alert so if you wanna avoid just read the episodes and skip my blurbs)

Episode 17: Twin Cam Angels

It's an all-out goofy episode but that's why I love it; everything from the weird Alienizer to the whole premise to Umeko getting drunk was a riot.

Episode 26: Cool Passion

A great Hoji character focus episode within the "Tetsu gets to know everyone better" arc. Instead of just being a one-dimensional "cool Blue" kinda character, we see that his professionalism stems from his sheer grit and stubbornness in the face of adversity. (Deka's character development episodes are excellent man.)

Episode 27: Funky Prisoner

I kinda liked the little twist halfway, it's also a great episode showcasing Jasmine's character - cool and composed but also filled with passion for justice.

Episode 28: Alienizers Returns & Episode 29: Mirror Revenger

Basically Tetsu's backstory arc. That scene where Genio manipulated the whole situation to escape prison was amazing, and also Genio's character and voice was so sinister and villain-like in a brilliant way.

Episode 34: Celeb Game

I found the premise pretty refreshing in the context of the series at that point - the Alienizers (rich young men) weren't committing murder for financial gain per se, but because they were so up in their ivory towers that they completely lacked empathy or even cared that they were taking lives. Senchan was pretty badass in this episode as well.

Episode 37: Hardboiled License

I basically wrote an entire post waxing lyrical about how this episode stood out from the rest in an excellent way, basically turning many dekaranger tropes on its head and just focusing on the story, drama and filmmaking.

Episode 39: Requiem World

The dream world premise was quite interesting and so was the camerawork for the episode. One of the rare episodes where Umeko was a focus character that was on the darker side, but she shone in this episode (and a great episode about Jasmine and Umeko's relationship in general).

Episode 41: Trick Room

One of the most brilliant "mystery" type episodes in Dekaranger in my opinion. The Alienizer was also unnervingly sinister, and the scenes of Senchan facing his claustrophobia were great too.

Episode 43: Meteor Catastrophe

It's one of those episodes that defies the rules of science and physics but it explores how Ban and Hoji's partnership/friendship has developed since the beginning and towards the tail end of the series.

Episode 46: Proposal Panic

The premise and set up of the Alienizer's crime is kinda mediocre but it's The Sen/Umeko episode and they're everyone's favourite Dekaranger couple. The action kinda takes the backseat in this episode (like ep 37) and focuses more on the story, which I really like.

Oh cute! We might be rewatching that soon--we've been going through the New Space Sheriff stuff, we'll probably be watching the Shaider V-Cin this weekend and Space Squad vs Deka next. After that it'd be reasonable to rewatch Kyuu vs Space Squad as well. Honestly it'll probably make a lot more sense this go-round, we'll have so much more background for it.

okay actually i meant to ask you this earlier. given that earlier ask about why it's easier for you to take the cops in patranger and kuuga more than drive, what's your feelings on dekaranger if any

i like deka as a show. it’s not as fresh in my mind, and im sure if i rewatched it now i’d have more issues with certain aspects just bc it’s unavoidable when you have a show about cops as superheroes, but i think it gets by okay by the strength of its cast and the scifi setting keeping things distant enough from real life to not feel like it’s constantly crossing a line. like with them being in this futuristic time and almost every criminal they go after being a mass murderer or straight up genocidal on a planetary level it puts things on a very Tokusatsu™ scale, whereas drive to me doesn’t have that added layer of fantasy that makes the premise a little more palatable

but everyone’s limit is different, so if someone never wanted to watch it i’d 100% get it, you know?

I also miss him a bit, but on my phone I still have him 😂 bc the App decided so ...

Tomoya Nagase is a treasure and I really should rewatch some of his dramas, especially his comedic work 😍 I'll take yours on the list!

Wait sorry, Hurri vs Deka isn't a thing, I got my order mixed up. I meant Gao vs Hurri. 

i was like ooh anon must be contacting me from a very slight alternate universe... if i had a say in it hurri vs every sentai would be a thing but alas.

i have seen vs gao and 10 years after, yeah. didn’t think about the gokai eps though those’ll be nice to experience again once i get there. me rewatching gokaiger will just be like: hey i know those guys this time!
