finished the confidence man jp!

this one was on my backlog for several years and that whole time i really never knew what the tone was like. i assumed fun & humorous, obviously, but. in more of a lowkey way? i genuinely did not realize this show was so... Wacky. Zany, one might say.

zany doesn't always work for me so it really took me aback at first but surprisingly more of the humor landed for me throughout than not. i'd say only the medical ep stands out in my mind as being notably unfunny. as well as a few moments of bokuchan bullying where it goes a little too far.

in particular the sports ep caused me to start cry laughing when their fake con artist basketball team accidentally turns into a real basketball team and the players are like we wanna go the distance coach 😤 as kiseki starts playing soulfully in the bg. tried to explain that one to mom, but, well. you kinda need to have been there.

gonna miss experiencing dako's unhinged schemes now that it's over. the final scheme actually being a prequel that's meant to lead into episode 1... blew my mind a little bit. might have to look into the movie.

also now i'm a little peeved that higashide masahiro had to go and get himself canceled. :/ he's so cute in this show & he had a good thing going with this type of niceboy role. sad! well there's other ikemen

that was nice & emoi but at this point bladeheads are generally late 20s and up and imo you don't really need to invent an epic new god-level threat for the lads to go up against to entertain them. you could instead have blade media that's like. "the office" but with BOARD under tachibana-san. and the only thing they fight is some kind of new monster a suspicious mad scientist (who tachibana personally vouched for) has been frankensteining together in BOARD's basement. and the fans might honestly enjoy that more

on some level it makes sense for something like this to semi-canonize zi-o, as the blade arc was like the only zi-o arc to give people the fanservice they actually wanted from an anniversary show.

but otoh. even if that wasn't the case i'm trying and failing to imagine any rider show other than blade just going along with zi-o and saying "sure that happened". the fuck it we ball of blade is forever
