Someday, we might make contact with intelligent life beyond our planet. In that case, linguists want to be PREPARED. Enter the excitingly named field of Xenolinguistics!

In this bonus episode, Gretchen and Lauren get enthusiastic about how linguists might go about communicating with aliens. Drawing on highlights of the academic book "Xenolinguistics: Towards a Science of Extraterrestrial Language", we talk about how we'd actually go about trying to communicate with aliens. First of all, how can we know that a species is trying to communicate, and how can we convey our intentions in return? Secondly, do we have a shared context: are they on our planet, are we on theirs, or are we trying to decipher some sort of radio waves from afar? Third, what sort of medium are they using: visual, audio, and touch are all used for human languages and have some obvious advantages, but what about smell, electromagnetism, or electric pulses? Fourth, what could we learn about interspecies communication here on Earth from the African Grey Parrot, the prairie dog, and the vervet monkey? And finally, what other practical and ethical considerations do we need to remember based on current linguistic documentation projects? (The aliens may have multiple languages, only some of which are appropriate for outsiders to learn. And there are no spare AA batteries available in orbit around Alpha Centauri.) To clarify this

Spires can’t really physically say hi, and don’t really have an external language other than low rumbles and whistles that they can make by contracting their shells and pushing out air.

The grimmos can and will help with quick external communication as they can more or less understand the rumbles due to a chemical in their brain that was given to them via a special jelly the spires will make for the babies to help communication

LPS Custom #8: Centipede Alien Cat Inspired by the album cover for Stranded by Red Vox.

This was one of my most complex repaints and sculpts yet! The design is inspired off of one of my favorite space themed songs, Stranded by Red Vox. Since the collab was alien themed, I thought it would be perfect to incorporate it as a motif. I also thought centipedes would help give the main design a unique look. (aaannnd the cat portion of the design is just because I only have shorthair bases left lol.)

Danny who has finished school, distances himself more and more from his parents as they slide further into GIW madness, sabotages the portal, sees Vlad also actually getting wary of these government assholes, grows up, and then after a particularly rough fight becomes a Green Lantern. Then says “I do not want to do this anymore” and takes the opportunity immediately to dip and ditch earth and doesn’t at all mind being assigned to one of the far sectors. In fact when he finds out sector reassignment is a thing he requests it right away.

“Only request my aid for earth related things if there is no other option, otherwise I don’t want anything to do with that place anymore”

And both John and Hal are like, “uh, you know what- sure…” basically all Earth Lanterns get Earth fatigue, it’s normal. Though it usually takes some time.

Sadly stuff happens and Danny’s aid is needed, like it’s all Earth Lantern hands on deck, Sojourner is there too n everything.

And the moment things are working out and the situation seems resolved on Earth the GIW with the Fentons pull up and are like “You have eluded us for YEARS, but we knew you would return someday Phantom! this time you will not escape us!”

And Danny is like, “God fucking dammit- ok I have been here for too long, I’m heading back to my sector. And this time I am staying there, Earth be damned”

And like the threat has been contained so the other Green Lanterns follow Danny out into the stratosphere while these government goons are screaming bloody murder up at Phantom.

and Danny is like, “ok fine, I’ll give the tl;dr, so essentially, my existence is considered illegal by the US government and I don’t really want to get caught, experimented on and then terminated because of my biology”

“Are you serious?” “I promise you, I wish I was just making that up.” “And then you decided to just leave?” the ‘are you giving up? are you just letting this injustice stand??’ is unspoken but Danny can hear it. Or he’s just projecting his own hang ups about it all on them, that’s also possible. 

“I mean it has worked for me really well these past few years. if you want to look into it check out the Anti-Ecto Acts. But personally I’m over it, I can just no longer help with Earth that’s it”
