Wheatfield With Crows by Vincent Van Gogh
What Painting Style Is Your Writing?
Here's a fun little thing I've been thinking about lately based on a conversation with a friend. While it's not one-to-one, I do think that painting styles can have a bit of a parallel to writing styles, especially when it comes to descriptions.
As a note, these are my own personal categorizations based on writing style. Would the authors themselves agree with these categorizations? Probably not, but that's okay, we're not doing this for them.
I also haven't captured every single painting style in the world here; these definitions are focused primarily on European art, and there are subgenres within each of these. If I tried to do that, we'd be here forever.
Consider this an introduction to the concept of matching your writing style to art movements, a jumping-off point to look deeper and find your perfect match.
Realism
A Village in the Snow by Peder Mørk Mønsted
Key features: Very specific descriptions meant to evoke precise images. May include what seems like irrelevant inclusions in order to give a full sense of place. Real-world settings are often dizzingly specific, whether that is a tiny cafe in Paris or the exact field that's being visited. "Gross" things are depicted with great factualism and an almost dispassionate narration. Dialogue is sharp, and characters are not always likable, but feel very real.
Example text:
His cheerfulness increased, like the creaking of an ill-greased pulley, and ended by degenerating into a terrible spasm of coughing. The fire basket now clearly lit up his large head, with its scanty white hair and flat, livid face, spotted with bluish patches. He was short, with an enormous neck, projecting calves and heels, and long arms, with massive hands falling to his knees. For the rest, like his horse, which stood immovable, without suffering from the wind, he seemed to be made of stone; he had no appearance of feeling either the cold or the gusts that whistled at his ears. When he coughed his throat was torn by a deep rasping; he spat at the foot of the basket and the earth was blackened. Germinal by Emile Zola
Strengths: Creates a very strong sense of place and evokes powerful imagery in the reader's mind, to the point that they feel as if they are actually there. With good realist texts that are based on careful research, the reader gets a strong understanding of the given era or issue being discussed. Great for infusing a text with political, social, or philosophical themes.
Drawbacks: Many times, deep characterization takes a back seat to depiction, leaving readers feeling distant from the characters. There's little internal dialogue. Exhaustive explanations of sociopolitical issues can be offputting to some, as can the careful analysis of things like machinery or history.
Good for: Historical fiction, crime writing, literary fiction
Photorealism
Double Self Portrait by Richard Estes
Key features: Extremely specific descriptions that go deep, capturing every nuance of the scene. This can get even more detailed than realism, to things like the exact models of cars, the street corners, even tiny imperfections of a person's face. Actions are precise and narrated play-by-play. Dialogue is precise and crisp, and characters are very action-oriented.
Example text:
Almost automatically, Bond went into the 'Parry Defence against Underhand Thrust' out of the book. His right arm cut across, his body swivelling with it. The two forearms met mid-way between the two bodies, banging the Mexican's knife arm off target and opening his guard for a crashing short-arm chin jab with Bond's left. Bond's stiff, locked wrist had not travelled far, perhaps two feet, but the heel of his palm, with fingers spread for rigidity, had come up and under the man's chin with terrific force. The blow almost lifted the man off the sidewalk. Goldfinger by Ian Fleming
Strengths: The precision with which the writer narrates things can be incredibly instructive to the reader when used correctly, making them feel as if they are gaining a tutorial in the given subject. It's also great for stories when tiny details really matter, like mysteries.
Drawbacks: If not done correctly, photorealism can feel procedural and boring. Too much focus on the wrong things makes readers zone out. Plots and characterization can get lost in the need for specificity, though they are generally very plot-oriented.
Good for: Mysteries, adventures, crime novels, historical fiction
Expressionism
The Dessert: Harmony in Red by Henri Matisse
Key features: Strong, slashing impressions of an entire area that are focused primarily on the emotion evoked by the setting rather than specific details. Twines feelings with descriptions to make the reader envision their own landscape, as well as how it would make them feel. Characterization is often very strong, giving the reader a very powerful connection to the characters.
Example text:
I had been sleeping, curled up in a red plush seat, for a long while when we reached Black Hawk. Jake roused me and took me by the hand. We stumbled down from the train to a wooden siding, where men were running about with lanterns. I couldn't see any town, or even distant lights; we were surrounded by utter darkness. The engine was panting heavily after its long run. In the red glow from the fire-box, a group of people stood huddled together on the platform, encumbered by bundles and boxes. I knew this must be the immigrant family the conductor had told us about. The woman wore a fringed shawl tied over her head, and she carried a little tin trunk in her arms, hugging it as if it were a baby. My Antonia by Willa Cather
Strengths: With such a good focus on characterization, the reader often feels deeply for the characters. Readers may enjoy the freedom provided to make their own assumptions about the scenes and will leave the text with a feeling of motion, as if they have gone through the same trials as the characters. Great for summoning images of wild landscapes without going too far into the details.
Drawbacks: When done badly, the lack of specificity can make it feel like the writer is bullshitting and lazy. Some readers can feel frustrated by the lack of details. The writer may rely on common knowledge that the reader doesn't have, making them confused.
Good for: Romance, adventure, fantasy
Impressionism
Waterloo Bridge, London, 1903 by Claude Monet
Key features: Similar to expressionism, the writer focuses on a few key details to represent the whole, giving a "blurry" impression that ultimately allows the reader to fill in the details on their own. There is more freedom given to the viewer (or reader) than in other styles, and there's a strong focus given on the feeling evoked rather than the details.
Example text:
So some random light directing them with its pale footfall upon stair and mat, from some uncovered star, or wandering ship, or the Lighthouse even, with its pale footfall upon stair and mat, the little airs mounted the staircase and nosed round bedroom doors. But here surely, they must cease. Whatever else may perish and disappear, what lies here is steadfast. Here one might say to those sliding lights, those fumbling airs that breathe and bend over the bed itself, here you can neither touch nor destroy. To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf
Strengths: Great for infusing symbolism into a story by zooming in on specifics while leaving the rest vague. Often used for philosophical discussions, and may include many asides that ponder the nature of life. Often flows beautifully and is very lyrical. Can leave readers feeling 'haunted' by the questions posed and force them to look differently at the small things that make up their own life.
Drawbacks: Can be longwinded and feel more like a list of details rather than a real story. May feel self-indulgent to the reader, especially if they were expected a strongly plot-driven story. Characters may feel more like props for thought experiments.
Great for: literary fiction, flash fiction, poetry
Surrealism
Ulu's Pants by Leonora Carrington
Key features: Grand focus on unusual settings, with interesting details that make it clear what a strange place this is. Often interspersed with tongue-in-cheek asides from the narrator. Characters are whimsical, vibrant, and distinct, described in bold, sometimes unflattering terms.
Example text:
Great A’Tuin the star turtle, shell frosted with frozen methane, pitted with meteor craters, and scoured with asteroidal dust. Great A’Tuin, with eyes like ancient seas and a brain the size of a continent through which thoughts moved like little glittering glaciers. Great A’Tuin of the great slow sad flippers and star-polished carapace, labouring through the galactic night under the weight of the Disc. As large as worlds. As old as Time. As patient as a brick. Actually, the philosophers have got it all wrong. Great A’Tuin is in fact having a great time. Great A’Tuin is the only creature in the entire universe that knows exactly where it is going. The Light Fantastic by Terry Pratchett
Strengths: Because of a strong narrative voice, these books often feel like a direct conversation between the author and reader, which creates a very warm, intimate experience. The strange details are memorable and intriguing, making the reader want to delve further into the world.
Drawbacks: When not done correctly, these stories can feel silly, like the author is trying too hard. Details that aren't strange enough may feel melodramatic and overemphasized.
Great for: Fantasy, sci-fi, adventure, YA
Abstract
Elegy to the Spanish Republic by Robert Motherwell
Key features: Descriptions are evokative moreso than realistic, and writers may be willing to go far deeper into uncomfortable topics than others. Information may be jumbled, nonsensical, or downright wrong, all to provide a disorienting and, at times, unsettling experience for readers. Unusual depictions of everyday life and fantastical scenarios are common. Stories are rambling and rich with symbolism, but not necessarily with clear themes or deeply fleshed out characters.
Example text:
Then it developed sort of teeth-like little raspy incurving hooks and started eating. He thought this was cute at first and built an act around it, but the asshole would eat its way through his pants and start talking on the street, shouting out it wanted equal rights. It would get drunk, too, and have crying jags nobody loved it and it wanted to be kissed the same as any other mouth. Finally it talked all the time day and night, you could hear him for blocks screaming at it to shut up, and beating it with his fist, and sticking candles up it, but nothing did any good and the asshole said to him: ‘It’s you who will shut up in the end. Not me. Because we don’t need you around here any more. I can talk and eat and shit. Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs
Strengths: Very memorable, impactful, and intriguing. Creates new perspectives and concepts for the reader, showing the entire possibilities of the English language. Forces deeper analysis; many 'abstract' works have become hallmarks of their era that are still discussed decades later.
Drawbacks: The confusing and, at times, offputting descriptions can make some readers check out. These are an acquired taste which, when not done well and with an established following, may not receive much commercial success.
Good for: literary fiction, flash fiction, poetry
Cubism
The Women of Algiers by Pablo Picasso
Key features: Laconic style that is heavy on dialogue, not so much on description. Facts are stated plainly and without great adornment. Symbolism is muted but definitely present, requiring close reading to catch. Conversations may be circuitous and written very true to life, including irrelevant details and avoiding the main issue.
Example text:
Everything about him was old except his eyes and they were the same color as the sea and were cheerful and undefeated. "Santiago," the boy said to him as they climbed the bank from where the skiff was hauled up. "I could go with you again. We've made some money." The old man had taught the boy to fish and the boy loved him. "No," the old man said. "You're with a lucky boat. Stay with them." "But remember how you went eighty-seven days without fish and then we caught big ones every day for three weeks." "I remember," the old man said. "I know you did not leave me because you doubted." "It was papa made me leave. I am a boy and I must obey him." "I know," the old man said. "It is quite normal." "He hasn't much faith." "No," the old man said. "But we have. Haven't we?" "Yes," the boy said. "Can I offer you a beer on the Terrace and then we'll take the stuff home." "Why not?" the old man said. "Between fishermen." The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway
Strengths: Can drive deep into the heart of the human condition and depict difficult topics in a way both sensitive and intriguing. The barebones depictions may be incredibly sharp, making readers look differently at their own lives. When the dialogue is written well, it can carry the text fantastically and develop vivid characters without much description.
Drawbacks: Similar to abstract writing, 'cubist' writing is often divisive: you either love it or you don't. Some can be bored or confused by long back and forth dialogues without any description to latch on, especially if the text is too focused on realism in dialogue without considering the bigger picture.
Good for: Crime writing, literary fiction, flash fiction
Pop Art
M-Maybe by Roy Liechenstein
Key features: Often features many references to contemporaneous media, merchandise, or current events, giving it a strong sense of time. Fast descriptions that rely on common knowledge, often done in a very punchy and fast-paced style. Characters are often vivid and draw on well-liked tropes so readers will quickly empathize with them.
Example text:
I avert my gaze from hers and glance down at my watch. It’s the latest in smartwatch tech from Samsung, a beautiful little thing that connects to my phone and computer, controls the streaming box on our television… Hell, if we could afford smart lights in our apartment, it could handle those, too. It’s nearly 8:00 p.m., which means my Glitch subscribers will be tuning in for my scheduled gaming stream of Reclaim the Sun at any minute. A couple social media notifications start lighting up the edges of the little screen, but it isn’t the unread messages or the time that taunt me. Don't Read the Comments by Eric Smith
Strengths: Very relatable to readers of a given era. When done well, can be both nostalgic and instructive, as they are strongly rooted in a particular time and place. Because they are so relatable, this kind of pop fiction is incredibly easy to commercialize and does well in mass media.
Drawbacks: There may be too much focus on being relatable rather than delving into the human condition. Easily grows dated and may rely too much on tropes and pop culture references for some to understand or enjoy.
Good for: YA, romance, comedy
Symbolism
Isle of the Dead by Arnold Böcklin
Key features: Focuses on the ideas of images rather than specifically describing things. Often a strong interest in the "unknowable," or the call of the void; much is left to the reader's imagination. A character's reaction to a given thing is often more important than the thing itself, helping the reader see it through the character's eyes and put themselves in the character's place. Mysterious and atmospheric. Like the 'impressionist' style, there may be great detail given to one or two things that represent the whole.
Example text:
Only poetry or madness could do justice to the noises heard by Legrasse’s men as they ploughed on through the black morass toward the red glare and the muffled tom-toms. There are vocal qualities peculiar to men, and vocal qualities peculiar to beasts; and it is terrible to hear the one when the source should yield the other. Animal fury and orgiastic licence here whipped themselves to daemoniac heights by howls and squawking ecstasies that tore and reverberated through those nighted woods like pestilential tempests from the gulfs of hell. The Call of Cthulu by H.P. Lovecraft
Strengths: The writing is beautiful, poetic, and intriguing, playing deep into the fears of the human psyche regarding the unknown. Atmosphere, rather than understanding, is important here, and leaves readers feeling uneasy. Excellent for creating strong themes without seeming to lecture the reader.
Drawbacks: Can be melodramatic, and readers may grow frustrated by the lack of specificity. When not done well, it can feel cheap and maudlin rather than intriguing or unsettling. It's important to know what to disguise and what to reveal in order to provide 'anchors' for the reader.
Good for: Mystery, horror, sci-fi
Futurism
“Roundism – 02-12-14” by Corne Akkers
Key features: This one is more difficult to understand, both literally and figuratively. Descriptions can often be nonsensical, but they are written within a context that the reader does not have a full understanding of. There's most focus on the intriguing possibilities of words, settings, and themes. Things are referenced but not fully explained; the reader gets impressions of the world rather than the full idea. Often a very experimental style.
Example text:
You have been descending long enough on this incline hauling your slate ballast that the churning plane where sea meets sky is as far above you as an oak tree’s canopy is above a woman on a forest path. You watch the dappling of the sunlight with the sting and haze of submarine vision. First, she said, there was Nothing. All at rest. Then came Something, to shake the Nothing out of its peace. Out of Something came Things in proliferation, noise and edges and motion, darkness and light and gloaming, rocks and stars and water and fire and cold. Out of them came muck and slime. Out of that came darting specks. Out of them after a while came trees and birds and us. The Book of Elsewhere by Keanu Reeves and China Miéville
Strengths: As with 'abstract' style, there is an immaculate interest in the possibility of worlds and words, often pushing language to its limits in order to depict things otherwise undepictable. The complexities of the style can be very fascinating and demand a second read.
Drawbacks: Readers may be put off by how confusing the descriptions can be and how much the plot wavers. If not foreshadowed enough, plot twists may appear to come out of nowhere, leaving readers frustrated. Can feel self-indulgent and overblown.
Good for: Fantasy, sci-fi, literary fiction
How can knowing your writing art style help you?
Every writing style has its strengths and drawbacks, as well as its own unique applications. Some may be better for certain genres than others, and you can blend different styles to create something original that is wholly your own. Knowing your art style will allow you to draw upon your strengths while minimizing its weaknesses.
Additionally, understanding where you lay within all these extremes will give you an idea about how to expand your repertoire so as to create a more balanced style. You'll have an idea of who to read in order to try out different approaches, which can offer you more depth.
For cross-genre writers, looking at what works best for different genres will help you approach each type differently and better adhere to reader expectations.
As I mentioned previously, these are not discrete categories, nor are they the only ones out there. Every writer is a combination of some of these, or they may not fit any of them However, thinking about your writing in terms of what images it presents can shore up your descriptions to give off exactly the feeling you want, giving you more control over your work.
If you have any suggestions of other art styles that may also translate to writing, don't hesitate to drop them in reblogs or comments! Let me know what you think your writing adheres to (mine is closest to Impressionist, more like post-Impressionist).

Okay so me and my fiancée have had our own Invader Zim AU going for 3 years now, it's a mix of our OCS and canon characters but a lot of their personalities we have changed to make them unique to our universe and our world! We call it the RoseGold universe
My fiancée doesn't have a Tumblr but she's been desperate to post our characters and stories somewheres so we're gonna make her one tonight! For now I'll post some OC intros and some basic lore
Our AU can be NSFW and 18+ sometimes, but I will always give a warning and tag the post properly. The 18+ moments are all mostly lore based
CW FOR BLOOD, MENTIONS OF SELF HARM (not detailed)
Almighty Tallest Golden
Belonging to my amazing fiancée Holly, she is the Irken ruler in our AU
She is a defective Irken with semi-rare genetics like fluffy antennas and almost blindingly bright yellow eyes
Fashionista! She loves to design her own dresses and clothes
She's soft and gentle, but can be very murderous and revenge hungry. Low-key a dictator but a sweet dictator
During her elite training, she met Miyuki. The two started a secret love affair; they would sneak out of their bases in the middle of the night and go to degenerate space clubs
Miyuki became a Tallest before Golden, she had vowed to Golden that they would be the first gay irkens to rule Irk together and prove that their race doesn't need to be all about destroying planets and training young smeets to be killers
Red and Purple were like um nope lol and had planned for Miyuki's death so they would become Tallest before Golden
In the AU Red and Purple don't die from the Florpus, but end up being demoted and banished from the Irken Armada, so Golden becomes Tallest
Has an appointment therapist, Tenn, who has an unhealthy and unprofessional love for Golden but Golden only sees them as really close work friends
Here's some art I've made of Golden! Also the bottom two are commission pieces by zimdial on Instagram!
Royal Scientist Roze
Belonging to me, Roze is Golden's lover and the Royal Scientist!
She is also a defective Irken, she has emotional outbursts frequently and has a history of self harm (due to the trauma of being an invader + bad past relationship)
She's quiet and keeps to herself, awkward and bitchy, but behind closed doors she is the sweetest kittem
Very work oriented, takes her job very seriously as it took her forever to work her way up in the hierarchy
Her and Golden first fell in love while waiting on an emergency waiting room on the Armada together. Roze was training to be a scientist and Golden was still in elite training, this was during Golden and Miyukis relationship but they didn't exchange words until years later
Roze previously was engaged to her lab partner, Lilac. Their relationship was sloppy and not healthy, but they had to keep their lives a secret. They ended in flames, and later Roze gets her revenge on Lilac
Wasn't promoted to Royal Scientist until after Golden had come into power. Roze was assigned to give weekly debriefs on research and potential biological and chemical breakthroughs + hazards. They were always messy, Roze became so nervous from Golden's soft yet glaring eyes
Their relationship started one day in Golden's secret greenhouse. She grew all sorts of space flowers from all over the galaxy, and had invited Roze there for a 'research meeting'. Roze felt like she was going to be killed, until Golden leaned all the way down into her and admitted to how much she respects Roze. She asked her out on a date, same time same location in a few days
Because Tenn is an appointment therapist for the Almighty Tallest, she was also appointed to the Royal Scientist. Tenn developed an unhealthy and unprofessional relationship with Roze as well, but Roze didn't reciprocate and never actually liked her.
Some Roze art I've made! I don't draw her a lot, but I should
Here's just some RozeGold stuff :)

In a world where we're constantly bombarded by glare from sunlight bouncing off various surfaces, polarizačné okuliare emerge as a beacon of clarity and style. Beyond just a fashion statement, these specialized lenses offer a plethora of benefits that go beyond mere eye protection. Let's delve into the science and style behind polarized glasses.
First and foremost, what sets polarized glasses apart is their unique construction. Unlike conventional sunglasses that merely darken your view, polarized lenses contain a special filter that blocks intense reflected light. This filter is oriented vertically, allowing only vertically oriented light to pass through while blocking horizontally oriented light. This polarization effectively reduces glare from surfaces like water, snow, and roads, resulting in a clearer, more comfortable vision.
Whether you're driving, fishing, skiing, or simply taking a stroll on a sunny day, polarized glasses provide unmatched visual clarity. By cutting through glare, they enhance contrast and depth perception, allowing you to see details more vividly and accurately. This is particularly beneficial for activities where precise vision is crucial, such as navigating treacherous terrain or spotting elusive fish beneath the water's surface.
Moreover, polarized glasses offer significant protection against harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Prolonged exposure to UV radiation can lead to various eye problems, including cataracts, macular degeneration, and even certain types of eye cancer. Thankfully, polarized lenses typically come with built-in UV protection, shielding your eyes from these damaging rays and preserving your long-term eye health.
But polarized glasses aren't just functional – they're also incredibly stylish. With a wide range of designs, colors, and frame shapes available, you can find the perfect pair to complement your personal style. Whether you prefer classic aviators, sleek wayfarers, or trendy oversized frames, there's a polarized option to suit every taste and occasion.
Beyond their practical benefits and fashion appeal, polarized glasses have also found applications in various professional fields. Pilots, for instance, rely on polarized aviator sunglasses to reduce glare and enhance visibility during flight. Similarly, athletes often opt for polarized sports sunglasses to optimize their performance by minimizing distractions and improving visual clarity.
Furthermore, polarized glasses have become indispensable accessories for outdoor enthusiasts and adventurers. Whether you're hiking through rugged landscapes, sailing across open waters, or scaling towering peaks, polarized lenses provide a clear view of your surroundings, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of nature without squinting or straining your eyes.
In recent years, advancements in lens technology have further expanded the capabilities of polarized glasses. Anti-reflective coatings, hydrophobic coatings, and impact-resistant materials are just a few innovations that enhance durability, performance, and overall user experience. As a result, modern polarized glasses offer unparalleled optical quality and longevity, making them a worthwhile investment for anyone seeking reliable eye protection and enhanced vision.
In conclusion, polarized glasses combine science and style to offer a superior eyewear solution for individuals of all lifestyles. Whether you're seeking relief from glare, protection from UV rays, or a fashionable accessory to elevate your look, polarized glasses deliver on all fronts. With their advanced technology, versatility, and timeless appeal, these glasses are truly a sight to behold – and through them, the world becomes a clearer, more vibrant place.

do you know Chinese symbolism for homosexuality?
tw homophobia, pedophilia
Hi again, for gay men there are a couple really well known ones but I’m not sure if they were real or fabricated, because all the articles describing them always cite the same couple sources from Antiquity... I tried to verify them but the only articles that didn’t copy and paste from the same source came across as extremely homophobic, so I decided to give up. The most common and reliable one is probably 断袖 or “cut sleeve”, which I mentioned in a previous ask. I would like to use this opportunity to talk about some tangential but more important topics regarding homosexuality in China though.
As a followup to my previous ask where I said I'd look through some Ming and Qing novels to see how homosexuality was perceived at the time, the conclusion I (unfortunately) came to was that homophobia was very much alive and well in Chinese literature and society. A lot of people like to argue that gay people fared pretty well in China historically by either pointing to emperors who were or were rumored to be gay or time periods where gay sex was prevalent as a form of consumption. This is extremely shallow and also kind of Orientalist in my opinion, these arguments always go for the emperors and do not take nuance into consideration or dive into wider societal discourses on homosexuality in imperial China. If you research homosexuality in Europe by only looking at royalty, you’ll find plenty of homosexual behavior too, does that mean gay people had it very easy in Europe historically?? Not to mention that they usually don’t differentiate between dynasties, let alone centuries or decades, even though public opinion on homosexuality in China (or anywhere in the world tbh) could change very quickly. This is also sort of Orientalist, assuming “imperial China” to be a never changing entity with a never changing stance on homosexuality. Since I know nothing prior to the Ming Dynasty I’ll share some of my random findings on homosexuality and homophobia in the Ming, Qing and 20th century.
Gayness as disease
Nowadays the symbol of the cut sleeve is just a benign historical allusion but historically it seems that it was used in a negative and condemning sense, implying that people thought of homosexuality as a disease or deviation from the norm. The common phrase used for the cut sleeve is "断袖之癖", usually translated as "the passion of the cut sleeve" nowadays, but the meaning of the word 癖 here leans more toward "fetish", "obsession" or "hobby" with pathological connotations. I thought maybe this word had a different, nuanced meaning historically but it seems that it was used to describe what it means :(( The only silver lining is probably that with the progression of language it isn’t offensive anymore.
In a lot of popular novels from the Ming and Qing, homosexuality was depicted as a "perversion" and a decadent lifestyle that plagues morality, and gay characters were often either killed or straightened out by the end of the story. An example of this is the story 黄九郎 Huang Jiulang from the series 聊斋志异 Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio by 蒲松龄 Pu Songling written in the 17th century. In this story, one of the protagonists was gay; he died after confessing his love to the other guy in a very fast paced bury your gays arc which somehow reminded me of the Supernatural finale, and reincarnated as a straight man because of his piety. Thanks I hate it. Pu uses the symbol of the cut sleeve to refer to the protagonist, presumably in a negative manner.
Gayness as power/status symbol
Another thing was that historically in China a lot of people confused homosexuality with pedophilia. This is a global thing, but its presence in China is often overlooked. This could be seen in the popularity of another term for homosexuality, "娈童", meaning something similar to "pederasty". I read somewhere that since the late Ming, pederasty was considered a type of tasteful consumption for high society, along with things like fashion, food, music and art. This was not equivalent to the "cut sleeve" or homosexuality as we know it nowadays, which refers to a personal sexual orientation, pederasty historically often refers to an imbalanced power dynamic where a wealthy, privileged man takes advantage of a young boy as a leisurely activity. It’s more to show off that someone in a position of privilege and wealth has the power to procure sexual objects, gender and age don’t matter much in this regard. I cannot help but cringe violently whenever someone brings up pederasty as proof of China’s historical “openness” toward gay people. Talk to me again when in this time and place you could marry someone of your sex (not a minor) and be considered a respectable couple instead of two jerks with a degenerate fetish (not saying that gay people have to marry, it’s just that the ability to do so is an important indicator of equality imo). Pedophilia and homosexuality are not one and the same good heavens.
I hypothesize that the reason why Chinese society was historically homophobic despite having no religious condemnation of homosexual individuals was the idea that having many concubines and male children was a status symbol for men. Women of marriageable age were seen more or less as commodities and male children could supposedly "continue the bloodline" 传香火 and were vessels for passing down prestige, so having them were of utmost importance to a privileged man. Being just gay or lesbian, however, meant that you didn't perform the "man strong working woman weak making babies" heteronormative family prototype, and was thus prone to criticism. When gay men didn’t have children they “couldn’t continue their bloodline” and were emasculated, when gay women didn’t have children they failed to “fulfill their duties as a woman” and were shamed.
It kind of makes sense considering how being bisexual was never a problem in comparison, especially for men. If you were a rich guy who had both male and female partners, you would still have children and concubines both male and female so nobody gives a shit. Emperor Zhengde of the Ming (reign 1505-21) was presumably bisexual and had both male and female lovers, nobody had a bone to pick with that; he famously liked to fuck around but those who criticized him did so for his debauchery instead of focusing on the gender of his partners. This is different to homophobia in Europe where same sex attraction was considered evil and immoral in and of itself because of religious reasons, in China it was rather the other practical implications of homosexuality (not having children or a family) that attracted hate.
By the way can we just take a moment to talk about bi erasure in Chinese history. From all accounts of Emperor Zhengde I’ve read he comes across as extremely bisexual, but a lot of people try to make him a gay icon? I mean, he liked women too.
One interesting homophobic angle in ye olde China which I find kind of funny was straight women who wanted to climb the social ladder by marrying rich men talking shit about them after figuring out they were gay lmao. Historically, there were not so many work opportunities for women, so the easiest way to improve social standing was to marry a rich and powerful guy. Not saying that women didn't work, they did but their upward social mobility was restricted because they couldn't enter the imperial examination system which was how men became rich and powerful. This angle is relatively benign and kind of helps illustrate that historical Chinese homophobia was indeed fueled by classism and patriarchy.
Gayness as crime
I used to think that there were no anti-sodomy statutes in China (laws prohibiting sex between gay men), but it turns out that there was one decree in the Jiajing era (1521-67) and one in 1740, and private gay sex was not actually decriminalized until 1957. Same sex marriage is still not legal in China at time of writing. I couldn’t find detailed information on what these laws entailed or how they were enforced, but they’re enough to prove that homosexuality in China was legally punishable from the 16th century onward. On top of that, even when there was no law prohibiting private sex acts between people of the same sex, displays of gay affection such as kissing or holding hands could still be legally punished under “public indecency” or “hooliganism”, which was frequently what happened in the 20th century.

Ah, lesbianka! Notes on a Russian Journey by Sue Bruley
One measure of the degeneration of the Russian revolution is the Communist Party's complete reversal on the question of homosexuality. In 1917 it was abolished as a legal offence, but by 1934 it had become punishable by up to eight years in prison. The Bolsheviks renounced the right of the state to interfere in sexual matters. They abolished all laws with regard to sexual behaviour except in cases where consent was absent or injury had occurred. But under Stalinist dictatorship homosexuality came to be regarded as a threat to the moral fabric of society. Homosexuals were counter-revolutionaries, per se, because they challenged that great institution, the ‘Soviet family'. The implication was even made that men who remained single could not possibly be good workers and were not, therefore doing their best to build communism'. When I visited the Soviet Union in August 1975 I was determined to find out what changes had been made, both legally and in terms of social attitudes to homosexuality since the dark days of Stalinist repression. Fortunately my task was made easier by the fact that another gay woman (Gilly) was in the same party. She was as inquisitive as I and was quite willing to 'come out'. We decided to collaborate and find out as much as we could, even if it meant embarrassing the other members of the group by asking very direct questions to the Russians.
Moscow
On one of our evenings in Moscow a visit to the local *Cultural and Pleasure Centre was arranged so that we could meet some members of Kommsomol (Young Communists). This turned out to be a joint meeting with two other English speaking groups (one from NUS) of thirty each. One hundred and twenty of us sat in neat rows in the theatre part of the centre and were asked to pose questions to the five members of Kommsomol who sat facing us with very serious faces. In the S.U. it is a rare privilege to be allowed to meet foreigners and obviously only the most trustworthy of party hacks were permitted to reply to our questions. We quickly became accustomed to the dreary uniformity and predictability of their statements.
We were encouraged to ask questions of an informative nature rather than political questions. As a result our meetings with Kommsomol members were very dull, with people asking questions such as "What is the price oi a haircut in Moscow?' The Russians delighted in answering such mundane questions and made detailed and lengthy replies. I tried to inject some debate into the proceedings by asking for their views on such questions as: the relationship between the working class, the party and the state, internationalism etc., but the only response was one or two hack phrases such as, 'the people and the party live in harmony'.
After about 40 minutes of this Gilly and I decided that the time was right to attempt an intervention on the gay question. I asked for the microphone, stood up and announced that I was going to raise the subject of homosexuality. I stated that I was a homosexual and that the woman sitting next to me was too. An embarrassed silence suddenly fell on the hall. I took a deep breath and continued. I described the gay scene in the UK and the increasing tendency of homosexuals to refuse to hide their sexual orientation as if it were something to be ashamed of. I referred to the attitude of the left groups and told them that even the British C.P. now had it's gay caucus (gasps of horror from the Russians at this point). Finally I asked them to describe to me the probable life style of a homosexual in the S.U. and what the attitude of the authorities would be. Even after I had finished speaking the audience continued to stare in my direction. The Russians too remained glazed and seemed to have an air of disbelief. Eventually one of them took the initiative and went to the microphone. He said that no one had ever asked a question of this sort.
[The text cuts off here due to how it was scanned]
It was obvious that none of them wanted to bear the responsibility of having to guess what the appropriate reply should be. Finally a young man in his early 20s took the microphone and said in my direction, 'It is a criminal offence. I stood up and asked him to explain in more detail and to state the usual length of prison sentences. He replied that two years was the normal term. They would say no more and asked the audience to continue the meeting by asking questions of a more generall nature about Soviet life.
After the Kommsomol meeting we approached one of our guides, Olga, in an attempt to obtain more information. She was quite responsive and promised to contact a 'friend of a friend' at the university (she was studying English at Moscow University), whom she thought to be a homosexual. But, as she said, she couldn't be absolutely sure as no one would ever admit to such a thing in public. In fact, we discovered, Moscow has a community of homosexuals who meet in an upstairs bar of a very well known cafe in Gorky St. (the main shopping area in Moscow). These gatherings were apparently tolerated by the police, probably because they do not attempt any sort of political activity - the USSR definitely has no equivalent of GLF. Gilly and I visited the Cafe Lira and, predictably, found the scene very closeted. The men at the bar were not in the least camp, although perhaps they were by Russian standards - we couldn't tell! We couldn't find any women there at all, but more about lesbians later... !
Further discussions with Olga confirmed our suspicion that conviction on a charge of homosexuality did not merely result in a two year prison sentence. It was usual to ensure that the person concerned became as isolated as possible. If he had been working in a city, his permit (the USSR has an internal pass system) would be automatically withdrawn and he would only be offered another job in some far flung province, which could be up to 200 miles from the nearest town. Homosexuality meant certain disqualification from political office and even ordinary job promotion, except perhaps in the arts, where, as in the West, there is a much greater degree of tolerance.
Leningrad In Leningrad another meeting with Kommsomol members was arranged. Our guide assured us that this time it would be a much more informal social gathering. We arrived at the Locomotive Club to find four large tables arranged in a square with beer, lemonade, cakes, sweets and fruit neatly arranged on white tablecloths. We sat interspersed between our Russian hosts, whom, the Chairman confidently informed us, were 'the cream of Soviet youth'. After the endless speeches of welcome we were left to converse with our neighbouring Russians. Neither Gilly or I spoke Russian so we quickly commandeered the services of the group's interpreter and sat ourselves in front of three naive looking Soviet women (one of whom was a member of the Communist Party). Initially we talked about the position of women in the S.U. They clearly had the impression that full sexual equality was already a fact. They could understand the reasons for the women's movement in the West, but they thought such a thing was unnecessary in their own country. We asked them about the availability of contraception. Their reply, to our amazement, was that they did not know much about it as they weren't married, so they didn't have any reason to seek contraceptive facilities.
When we raised the subject of homosexuality, they couldn't understand what we were talking about. Becoming very frustrated at their blank faces, I asked the interpreter to repeat the question using the word 'lesbian' instead of "homosexual'. 'Ah, lesbianka!' one of them said loudly. We explained that we were lesbians and that we wanted to know about lesbians in the USSR. They could not quite get over the fact that we were completely open about our homosexuality. They had never knowingly met a lesbian before they had learnt the word from a Swedish novel that was on sale in the city) and were utterly intrigued by the fact that we did not see it as anything to be ashamed of. It is interesting to note that, unlike some members of the British group, they were not openly disgusted by our statement and seemed very happy to continue talking to us, although they did not have anything to say about lesbians because the whole subject was a complete mystery to them. The seemed very puzzled throughout and one said that [here the text cuts off again]

Astro-observations 2.0
By:✨Moodymoon✨
⚜️ Mercury conjunct Venus aspect will bless the chart owner with a beautiful speaking voice, however, it does not necessarily grant singing ability. that depends on house placement and the sign.
⚜️ Mercury conjunct venus may also have a seductive voice and be able to attract and charm others simply by talking. This Includes Taurus mercury women.
⚜️ Mercury sextile Venus may mean the chart owner has a pleasant voice but they have to make a conscious effort to “achieve it”. (singing lessons)
but it can also mean, you'll sound erotic in bed.
So you may have not so noticeable speaking voice which blooms in the bedroom. Mercury sextile venus = Pleasant lovemaking sounds.
Astro tips: if you wanna get close with an 8th house mercury, they might be the type of people who'll be impressed if you can *break their psyche down. They might like it if you can figure out things about them that no one else knows without them having to tell you... If they wanna discuss their own deep stuff with you there's a good chance for more.
• An 8th house Mercury will wanna talk about "your stuff" rather than "their stuff" since the 8th house governs other people's possessions. If you wanna get to know them turn the tables.
•If you wanna impress a Leo, be yourself all the way, Leo’s descendant sign is Aquarius and they greatly admire people who are unique.
•If you want to befriend somebody fast find out their Ceres sign, which will show you which way they want to be taken care of.
• For an example I’m a Pisces but my Ceres sign is in Capricorn, if I’m in distress I prefer to sit down and make a practical plan on how to fix my problem. My bestfriend helped me during a rough time in my life by doing exactly that and she’s the only one I really dare open up to. Ceres is as much of a key to emotions as the moon. Beware of squares and hard aspects that may change the outcome.
• Libras tend to like when you make decisions for them and you are unapologetically confident. Even if your idea sucks, if you stand by it there’s a good chance they’ll stand by you.
•⚜️ If your venus sign is very different from your mars sign Ex. Pisces Venus and Aries mars, and if they make no aspect to each other that can mean your romantic type is very different from your sexual type.
—> You may date a person and feel like they are your ideal romantic partner but they don’t turn you on physically at all. (I’m gonna make an entire post in detail dedicated to this soon.) !!
•⚜️ If you have many personal planets in one house you may be attracted to the sign ruling that house. For example, my friend is a Taurus who has her Sun, moon, mercury and venus in the 5th house. Her boyfriend is a Leo. You may also be attracted to the cusp ruler!
🌪Karmic friendship synastry.🌪
Having Mars conjunct south-node is the Jesus/ Judas and Cesar/ Brutus aspect where somebody you trust isn’t who you think they are. If you believe in reincarnation, this aspect means you knew each other in a past life, where you were competitors. The mars (Judas) person betrayed SN now your souls have found each other in this life to settle the karmic debt or get revenge.
The cycle breaks when both Mars and the south node person make peace with how the relationship either is or has ended, take accountability and forgive each other. OBS! they do not need to reconcile to forgive.
• We might see the people who fill our empty houses as “special” and extra memorable
• chart ruler may help you pinpoint your pet peeves in dating
Ex. my chart ruler is the sun and my ASC is Leo, my biggest turn off is when a date isn't very confident or action-oriented.
• Ex, If your chart ruler is Pluto and you have a Scorpio Ascendant you may hate when people seem “fake” and superficial or when you make all the effort. etc.
•Personal planets in the 7th may make it difficult for you to form your own opinion without input. Moon in 7th watches a movie and doesn’t like it, they call their friend who tells them “it’s the greatest movie of all time!” So they watch it again and end up liking the movie because of what their friend said.
- if it’s a fixed moon in 7th however they may need their friend's input to make a final decision which may be to not change their mind.
- cardinal can go either way, they may watch it again to see if they missed anything important that could make them like it more. If not they’ll watch it anyways but complain how they don’t “get it”.
• Personal planets in 7th will struggle to like something if other people dislike it because that eventually makes them start to question why they themselves like it.
• As a 7th house person I avoid reading movie reviews before I watch a movie otherwise I don’t know what opinion is my own
•You need squares and oppositions in synastry, there are lessons in the hard placements. too many trines and sextiles can make you take the relationship for granted and it might feel stagnant. (But there is such a thing as too much of a hard aspect)
hard aspects synastry positives: Sexual tension, strong feelings, fast action taking, easy to identify differences, intense sex, life lessons.
✨Pop-culture astrology✨:
• Celebrities with Neptune aspecting the ASC or Midheaven can get away with an obscene amount of questionable things (Ellen DeGeneres, Justin Bieber, Michael Jordan) I also find this to be true for people with Pisces placements.
•If a personal planet falls into a celebrity’s 4th house you may stan them for several years. You might like everything they do even when they mess up.
•your dominant planet’s placement and the ruler of that house may also tell you which sign you find attractive.
•Ex. Jupiter dominant, where is Jupiter? Jupiter in 10th = Capricorn
Extended:Jupiter dominant, Jupiter in Gemini, find ruler = Mercury, where is Mercury in 2nd = Taurus
• A whooping amount of celebrities with infamously turbulent love lives have Venus trine/sextile Neptune. Ariana Grande, Cardi B, Justin Bieber, Jeffree star, Demi Lovato, Iggy Azalea, Kylie Jenner. To name a few!’
• Star athlete Michael Jordan is no exception to the Venus-Neptune love blur. He not only considered the greatest of all time and also has one of the largest divorce settlements in sports history probably because of a last minute Vegas wedding where a prenup was not written.
✨Be careful with that Venus/Neptune y’all✨
• Venus/Neptune tend to idealize relationships and therefore jump in too fast. They will also idealize their partners and only see the best, thereby ignoring a lot of shady behavior. They may also stick it out longer than they should in hopes that things will change.
(One: These are all for fun not criticizing anyone’s personal life or choices)
✨That’s all I’ve got folks. ✨
Some astrologers believe we can predict everything but my god, what a boring life if we could.

Caesar’s Legion and Christianity
Been thinking a lot about how incompetent Edward Sallow is in any way that matters, and how the Legion’s strange relationship with Christianity is emblematic of his failures.
The Legion are primarily oriented around the veneration of Mars, the Roman god of war. The first clue we get that this particular cult of Mars is heavily influenced by Christianity is that according to Arcade, various members of the Legion, and the Game Guide, Sallow is marketing himself as the literal son of God.
True, Caesar is the perfect man. But he is not just a man: he is the Son of Mars, ordained by the god of war to conquer all Earth.
The historical Julius Caesar also claimed descent from Mars, but never pretended to be his son. According to him, his ancestors included both the mythical hero Aeneas, a son of Venus, and Ancius Marcus, the legendary fourth king of Rome and a descendant of Mars. His links to the gods were present enough to support his deification, but stretched back generations to legendary figures. “Divi filius,” the way emperors were sometimes described, is distinct from “dei filius,” the descriptor applied to Jesus. The former implies you're descended from someone with divine qualities or heritage; the latter, that you’re the direct and literal son of the only god around.
And claiming patrimony from the divine isn’t the only way Sallow draws from Christianity rather than Rome if it suits him. Roman society has a hedonistic, socially progressive reputation, and while that’s variable based on time period and exaggerated depending on the source, it’s not wholly inaccurate. While built on patriarchal foundations, it was a sexually permissive environment for men, allowed a variety of smaller cults to flourish, and reserved some religious and social roles exclusively for women. Sallow preserves none of this: the values he’s imposed upon the Legion hold women as inherently lesser in all respects, homosexuality as degenerate, and the use of intoxicants as a sin punishable by death. Hmmm, where might he have gotten those ideas?
The ban on drugs and alcohol is the most specific link here because that’s not something that exists in most religious mainstreams. Many faiths ban intoxicants, but most of their popular, contemporary versions take a laxer approach because it’s hard to get an entire people not to drink. A notable exception is Mormonism, the faith in which Joshua Graham was raised. Not only does Sallow adopt the Mormon perspective on intoxicants, but his government takes an equally dim view of homosexuality and women - the LDS, particularly its earlier incarnations, viewed women as naturally subject to male dominion, and it still paints homosexuality as a “struggle” to be “overcome”.
Not that Sallow actually believes any of that stuff. What’s important to him is that his society has an ideal, a culture that’s strong enough to hold together hundreds of people with different origins, outlooks, and prior loyalties. The specifics are irrelevant so long as they serve his ideal state, outlined here:
It dedicated its citizens to something higher than themselves - to the idea of Rome itself... It means a nationalist, imperialist, totalitarian, homogeneous culture that obliterates the identity of every group it conquers.
Because of that myopic focus on the immediate utility of details over the broader meaning of entire worldviews, he’s placed himself in a bizarre situation where he’s adopted bits and pieces of Christian doctrine but is LARPing as a man who contributed to the death of Christ, the leader of a state that was morally incompatible with his teachings. Caesar Augustus and Caesar Tiberius appear in the Bible specifically as a way to criticize rulers who attempt to paint themselves as gods. Which is exactly what Edward Sallow is doing.
But they cried out, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him.” Pilate saith unto them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” John 19:15
The most durable, historically significant elements of Christianity are the parts that deal with resilience in the face of hardship, the yearning for freedom, love for your fellow man, struggle against tyrants, etc. Those bits were born in the crucibles of Babylon, Egypt, and Rome. They formed the basis of many later strains of radical resistance here in the U.S. Caesar wants the symbolic power of Christ without embodying any of what made him important, instead aping the behavior of the men who ordered his crucifixion - all while crucifying his own political opponents with such frequency and abandon that he’s basically begging for a Jesus 2.0.
The Legion is doomed to fail for a variety of reasons, and its religious orientation underlines the flaws that are tearing it apart. Sallow is peddling a gutted, twisted perversion of Christian doctrine, historical Roman values, and Hegelian philosophy that preserves none of the things that make them attractive or meaningful in exclusion. What he ends up with is a nonsensical, cynical corruption of these disparate influences, a distillation of their worst bits, wholly devoid of hope or spiritual value, and that’s a running theme of his reign: when you get right down to it, Sallow has no vision. He’s ostensibly created the Legion as “a society that could and would survive,” one that’s devoted to “long-term stability at all costs,” but it offers no future. Christianity tries to build symbols that endure after death, but Sallow’s symbols die with him.

How to Pick a Date for Your Spells
The first advice of absolute importance is to avoid starting anything during the Moon's Void of Course. Things like interviews, important business meetings, initiating projects, and especially Spells likely won't turn out well or will remain unfinished.
When planning a date for your Spell, it's important to take into consideration the following things:
Moon Phase
Moon Sign
Day of the Week
Retrograde Planets
Make sure the above bullets points align with the goals of your Spell. We have a Moon Phase Planner for 2020 that has all the above information to help pick a date for your Spells!
For example, if we wanted to do a spell for Material Wealth:
December 24, 2020 is an excellent day because:
the Moon is Waxing and is close to a Full Moon
the Moon is in Taurus, the sign of luxury and material possessions
it’s a Thursday which is ruled by Jupiter - the planet of wealth and expansion
Venus is NOT Retrograde
Now keep in mind that these are guidelines for timing your spells with the best natural energy available. You can do a money spell any time you like (avoid the Void of Course Moon) but it may not have as much supportive energy compared to the above example. This is because of the reasons given in the example. Taurus, the ruler of wealth, is a much better sign for getting money compared to Cancer for example.
The following information will help guide you in planning a date for your Spells.

Moon Phases
Full Moon - the highest point in the moon's cycle where its energies are at its peak. This is an excellent time for divination.
Note: when a Full Moon occurs twice in a month (October 31 2020) it is considered a Blue Moon. This is similar to a Full Moon but has more power
Waning Moon - the moon here is decreasing to a New Moon so its energies are that of degeneration. Use this time for banishing, cleansing, destruction or bringing anything to an end such as a relationship or bad habits.
New Moon - on the waning side of the New Moon, it has an ending type of energy as the moon is "disappearing". On the waxing side it has the energy of potential, ready for new beginnings.
Waxing Moon - a time of growth as the light of the moon increases to its peak at the Full Moon. Use this time to do Spells for building something up in your life such as health, new friendships.
Note: it is better to do the Spell closer to the Full/New Moon depending on the goal. Unless you want to do the Spells for multiple days, such as cleansing/banishing, you can start right after the Full Moon and end on the New Moon. This supports the goal of removing bad energy.

(interview) vogue korea april issue 2020 - perfect taemin
1. superm was another chance for taemin’s ever-evolving performance to be showcased. i thought a lot about how to create synergy with these exceptional performers. to put it simply, i wanted us to come off as energetic. but these days i’ve had a change of heart. our identity is definitely important. rather than just working hard, for superm to show off their colours well we need to show our personalities; we should be seen as one team. to be able to formulate a solid and clear colour is our homework. that’s why it’s regrettable. we couldn’t come up with a novel choreography to carry our new identity. we tried a lot in the practice room. superm seems to have found its musical identity but hasn’t gotten a hold of its performance character yet. the stages are too vague. 2. now that you are finally promoting with your best friend kai in one group, you two must’ve shared your concerns. since this friend is someone who has a lot of passion and ambition, he talks about various things. for instance, this style is pretty good, this choreography is quite trendy. thanks to him i’ve learned a lot. he is also very knowledgeable about the latest ‘hottest’ genres. we talk about these things often and even watch videos together. kai gives off ‘popular’ vibes. compared to him, my interests are quite unusual. nowadays kai is interested in music while i am into science. 3. is it science fiction? these days we’ve been watching videos on the theory of relativity and quantum mechanics together. 4. what aspect of it interested you? originally i was very curious, after seeing a recommended video on youtube i learned about quantum mechanics for the first time. i couldn’t understand the explanation, even those who were explaining it said it was a difficult concept. that was very fascinating to me. kind of like magic. 5. are you reading books on the subject too? the subjects of the books i read are different (laughs). there’s a book that was published long ago called ‘regarding the pain of others.’ it is a pessimistic book that gathers contradictory opinions of people for instance ‘people find joy in the pain of others, it is instinctual.’ as a celebrity, there are times when you are criticized but there are also times when you receive comfort from people. rather than blaming others, while reading this book, i began to think ‘people are like that, at most i shouldn’t behave like them.’ my interests are all over the place. 6. what makes you and kai click? we converse well. our opinions almost never clash and we respect each other. moreover, we fully understand our own roles in superm. 7. what position do you hold in superm? since i can’t ask if it’s the main dancer. in pictures and interviews, i’m the center. baekhyun hyung is the leader (laughs). 8. when the conversation wasn’t flowing well during the talkshow interview, i saw you neatly concluding it. that does happen. nct and wayv are still in the learning phase. that’s why i first listen to all of their thoughts during interviews then flesh it out with details later. 9. compared to when you set out abroad as shinee then promoting overseas as superm now, the status of k-pop has changed. looking at how superm was able to start off with an arena tour in the us and europe made me feel that k-pop is a ‘hot’ topic. in the past, we’d use venues of this scale for smtown concerts. even if you promote mainly in asia, seeing the audience section will make you realise the perception of k-pop has changed. 10. though k-pop’s scope has expanded and diversified, its definition has become simple. what are your concerns? my first concern is language. after i was able to communicate via language during my japanese activities, there were so many advantages. though each country overseas has its own language, i felt that i needed to learn english first. there are many international fans who want to experience the chemistry between our members, they’d feel much closer to us if we communicated using (a common) language. k-pop isn’t one dimensional. it’s not only about the music, there is music video, style, etc. included. people would make dance covers in the past, now they even emulate the styling. all of this is korean pop culture. 11. superm were on the ellen degeneres show and jimmy kimmel live. before we went on the ellen show we really rehearsed the interview a lot. america’s atmosphere is different so you receive questions that are never asked in korea. they don’t disclose the questions in advance either. we were also worried because the emcee could ad-lib. we came up with the most probable questions and practiced, we also received lessons from american comedians. compared to that, we went on jimmy kimmel live without any prep. 12. what went according to plan and what didn’t? the questions were not as intense as expected, ellen was well aware about k-pop culture so it went smoothly. 13. is there a dance genre you’re into these days? contemporary, lyrical hiphop, in the future as superm i think i’ll be able to show more, not the kind of dancing that you do after learning a given choreography but the kind that is full of emotions. it’s about giving meaning to your gestures. it isn’t out yet but my concert vcr features lyrical hiphop. in it i think i’m dancing alone with a giant full moon as my backdrop but get confused when there are two of us, either it’s another person or a shadow. a choreographer with a body type similar to mine had to dress in all black to come across as my shadow. i wore an oriental outfit with smokey makeup. 14. how do you usually come up with your ideas? i get inspired by the choreographers and creative directors. i imagine it as we converse then the idea develops. 15. was there a time you were inspired by fashion? of course. art begins with the five senses. what you see with your eyes, the things you can feel, clothes, food, perfume, music that you listen to are all sources of inspiration. i create private accounts to follow fashion brands. 16. having debuted at the age of 16, you are still young but your work experience has been long. i was in certain situations because of this. it doesn’t happen as often now but even in my early 20s, i completely belonged to the senior category at broadcasting stations. they are my juniors but many of them are also hyungs, i’m their senior but i’m also the youngest. now there are even staff members who are younger than me. they’re too formal with me (laughs). 17. are there juniors that ask you for advice or help? the superm members! especially ten, he is very curious. when we come out of a company meeting, he’ll get surprised and say “wow, hyung everything you said was right.” i even hear things like ‘veteran’ and ‘seer.’ apparently my predictions come true. but i try not to advise them as much. taking the initiative to say something feels overwhelming. 18. born in 1993 between millennials and gen z, do you share any characteristics with those in your age bracket? we’ve picked out a few of their traits. the first one is ‘they don’t eat fast food.’ me too! i took care of my health well ever since i started out with shinee. i was brainwashed from home to avoid foods that harmed the body. not even ramyeon, snacks were also banned. and just like that in my 20s i started carrying out the regime on my own. it’s become a habit to look after my health ever since i moved out. i always eat things that are good for my body, if the hyungs are taking vitamins, i’d ask for one too. 19. i suddenly recall a variety show where you were the only one who skipped the sauce and ate the meat on its own! one should not eat irritable foods. my mother’s words. 20. how about ‘they watch videos on youtube rather than tv. even the ads don’t particularly bother them.’ that’s right. i watch youtube more often than tv, while watching the ads i'd even marvel at their production quality. i’ve signed up for the premium package now so i don’t see the ads anymore. 21. ‘marrying or wanting to buy their own house.’ i currently live alone and i have no interest in decking out my house. at first, i didn’t think like that but a month later my interest dissipated. i’m lazy. it’s not like my house is for others to see, i’m fine with the incomplete feeling for now. 22. and finally ‘they avoid investing in financial companies.’ i don’t do that. my parents manage that, if there’s a good tip i’ll just let them know. 23. hiphop musicians tend to express their success through music. as an idol musician how have you been using the wealth you accumulated all these years? i invest in food instead of saving up (laughs). honestly, i don’t spend much. i don’t have anything i want. though i do spend on others a lot. 24. what kind of household did you grow up in? what gifts did you inherit from your family as a musician? i inherited my body type. all of my cousins have model-like physiques, they’re taller and slimmer than me. my mother sings well. my father plays instruments as a hobby. oh, and my paternal aunt used to be a ballerina. so perhaps i inherited such genes? 25. you’ve been doing the same thing for more than 10 years. what is the purpose behind creating music and showcasing it? in the past, i would think i should do well, i need to be number one, these days i’ve become ambitious for other aspects. i take pride in the fact that my work supplies others with positive energy. i feel a sense of accomplishment when fans like my music, i want to make them as happy as i am. everyone’s profession is different but i hope this synergy gained from mutual dependence leaves a good impression. 26. are you still composing songs? i used to but now i only participate in lyric writing. it differs with each song, at times the lyrics are emotional or talk about abstract love. it seems like my next solo album will include a song i wrote the lyrics to. sometimes songs composed by overseas composers might prove too difficult for the general public to understand. so i participate a lot in the arrangement or mixing phase. i point out the parts that should be added to the composition and those that are unneeded. teacher lee soo man does give advice but it often feels like i do the producing of my own solo album. 27. taemin’s originality is the clearest when he promotes as a solo artist. which song has best represented your identity? i worked hard on all of them but there was a turning point. at first there was ‘danger’ then ‘press your number’ was a conceptual performance, the transition to ‘move’ turned out well. i wanted to break out from the typical choreography routine and create my own identity, the resulting performances were ‘move’ and ‘want.’ my next solo album is again different. i’ve been making a lot of changes these days. 28. you seem to have high standards when it comes to composing music. was there ever an occasion where you absolutely refused to compromise and gave others a hard time? everyone is used to it (laughs). it’s something i learned from the head manager hyung who’s been with me since debut. the belief that ‘there is nothing that can’t be done. there is no such thing as impossible.’ another team manager hyung would tell me ‘you remind me of our head’ (laughs). honestly, the staff around me work beyond their given roles and with affection. normally work timings are from 9 to 7, they stay back till 10-11 pm for me. they don’t hold it against me, and when things do well, they too feel a sense of fulfillment together with me. 29. the new unreleased song must be quite different from the original then. there are already 12 versions of the song. when i thought we were somewhat done, we recently started arranging it again (laughs). 30. you hold your body to specific standards for the best performance outcome. i don’t ‘bulk up.’ previously, i used to work out when i ate a lot but my body would feel weighed down, it wasn’t what i wanted. if i gain a lot of muscles or become thick, it hampers my dancing form. that’s why i don’t put on weight. i train my stamina and strength and avoid bulking up my shoulders and arms. 31. by the way, do you do neck exercises as well? i was touched looking at your long neck in the vogue photoshoot. i had been noticing this too, now i know the reason! i think it’s because i dance. a lot of resistance goes into the neck when you dance. our head is the heaviest and it’s the neck that supports it. it goes away when i rest for a few days. we’re shooting amidst the superm tour maybe that’s why it looks thicker now. 32. an editor who has been watching you closely for a long time said that you’ve become extroverted. could it be that experience and relationships have made you comfortable and secure? i’ve lowered my guard. i couldn’t reveal my current self to others before. as a child i used to be so introverted that i’d hide behind my mother when strangers would get into the elevator. i changed with time. 33. is your ever-present smile a product of your personality or just business decorum? i’m always smiling. i even laugh at things other people don’t find funny (laughs). 34. shinee members are currently serving in the army. when they’re on break what kind of advice or nagging do they subject you to? i wish they would do that. we have a group chat on kakaotalk and i always revive it by asking “what’s up” “happy new year.” but as soon as the conversation picks up they only talk about the army. when i inform them about an issue at the company they say “really?” then it’s military talk again. when i feel left out and tell them to stop, they reply with “you’ll understand when you get here.” 35. in your career as a musician, when do you feel the best? when it’s time to reveal all that i’ve been preparing for so long! it feels different from finishing it. the first stage after debuting, shinee’s first concert, performing at tokyo dome, receiving the award... these are the moments that come to mind. 36. watching taemin grow for the past decade has been a huge source of strength. what are your dreams now? there are many. first of all, once shinee comes back again, i want the entire group to give off a feeling of revival. usually after getting discharged, it’s hard to keep up with the next generation, i want to avoid that. i’ve imagined it all when the shinee members return. second, i want to perform a lot on various stages as a solo artist. superm topped the billboard 200 album chart, it’d be nice to enter the top 10 on the hot 100 digital chart as well. 37. you are really talented at setting goals. i’ve gotten greedier. it’s just not for myself but i want to do it for the fans and members, even the staff. they become my driving force. i really am lucky. everybody works hard but i even get the recognition for it. come to think of it, i was given many opportunities and i worked hard to make the most of them, i’m really happy my efforts paid off in the end. i’m surrounded by good people. shinee, superm, many people fill in the gaps for me that i can’t solve on my own. 38. superm’s concert title is ‘we are the future.’ when you hear the word ‘future’ what are you reminded of? first, it’s h.o.t. (laughs). future-oriented things come to mind like artificial intelligence, drones, 3d hologram concerts. then again, in the future, though people might be able to watch concerts through holograms, i think humans will not give up on the tasks they themselves can do. my work will still be the same in the future. 39. the reason you don’t write anything on instagram. i don’t have anything to say yet (laughs). i don’t know if i should make my instagram cool or approachable. when fretting between writing a caption or using an emoticon, i just end up leaving it blank. actually i signed up after my manager hyung suggested that instagram would be good. so i’ve made one but i still don’t know what to upload. i get teased by the people around me for putting up selfies. i even took lots of pictures especially for instagram but... 40. did you not post the pictures? the point of instagram is real-time communication. is that so! i didn’t know (laughs).

A prominent member of the Camarilla, Sophie Langley, a patron at the court, is a sophisticated vampire who has run the game of the Masquerade for many a decade. She is elegance on two feet and an ever present socialite in the world of darkness. While she carries herself as a debutante of high society life, Sophie rarely leaves her haven unless it is to attend fancy social events. Most often they include important meetings at Elysium, designated meeting grounds for the clans.
Sophie is known for scraping up the lost and found especially fledglings left to their own devices. As long as she sees an opportunity to grab out of them she makes it her power play to obtain them for her own personal means. Gain is her calling. She has aspired to become her own Prince for a very long time. With great aspirations comes great plays on the chessboard. Hers is filled with all manner of moves with little regard for those she uses. Most are pawns in her aspirations for power but she has become fond of particular individuals throughout her undead life. She is just not one who shows what she is truly feeling on her fancy sleeves.
She has one known childe. Benoit Segal, another Toreador, who she has tossed to the fair winds. Embracing him for her own personal needs, Sophie and Benoit grew apart in their views. He sought answers in religion for vampires. She sought the means for influence disregarding any ideas of faith. Despite growing distant from her own brood, Sophie takes an interest in a new fledgling by the name of Isla Dimarco. Watching the newly born fledgling brought before the prince of New York, Sophie makes a move and offers Isla a proposition: plead for mercy and become her charge. There is little choice in the matter and Sophie knows this very well. Thus the fledgling becomes her new little protege and all around pawn in her turn for power.
Sophie fancies herself to be good compared to others part of the Masquerade but she is a true neutral. Neither evil nor good, most of her choices come to fulfill her political and personal aspirations. She appears not to have much care but that is surface value. When someone makes a mark she develops genuine interest. However do not expect her to let her guard down as she is a privately suspicious person. Even so she uses a specialty of charm, a signature move of the Toreador clan, to draw attention to herself. It is quite useful in a time of distraction.
( Sophie Langley is canon to the world of darkness in Coteries of New York; information is tweaked to fill in unknown details. )

Thundering footsteps reverbrated above her head raining down dust as the floorboards shook with each step. Nezumi frowned, bringing her cowl up to cover her face. The last thing she needed was a sneezing fit because her neighbor was being inconsiderate for those below. Well, neighbor might be a bit generous. It's not like they had ever met nor did she have any intention of striking up small talk. The fact that she was barely 5 inches tall and living in his walls certainly didnt help.
"SHIT!" thuds and clatering followed like somone had run into some furniture and knocked everything on top over.
Now, nezumi may not have officially met her neighbor but she knew enough about his habits to know that this was not exactly normal behavior for him. It was also after 12 on the weekend so its not like he was running late for work which would have made his current mad dash more understandable. Unless he got a schedule change... or maybe he's going to have company. But DnD saturday was yesturday...
"Ugh..." Nezumi groaned, now she was curious. "Just a peek." She thought.
Giving a quick shake to remove the fallen dust from her coat, she turned and began walking in the opposite direction from her initial heading. She could have ignored the clamor above and simply returned to her nice cozy bed to chase off the fall chill as she had intended, but no! Instead she was off to spy on her nieghbor like some degenerate all because her stupid curiosity would not let this go. Her nosiness was going to get her in trouble one day.
Carefully she padded down the hall, her slippered feet not even making a whisper. She had to be careful becuase the vent she walked was metal, top to bottom, and could echo like a yodeler in a canyon some days. Whatever has her neighbor in a fuss might distract him if she made a sound but Nezumi wasn't willing to chance that. Finally she came across a large vent, streaks of light flutter in from between the slats. standing on her tip toes she reached up and slowly moved it to the side, just far enough for her to pull herself up and peak her head out.
The apartment above was nice, a large couch faced a tv connected to various game systems. Closer to the kitchen was a table that was small enough for one person to use without feeling to big but was capable of expandng for when guests came over for the saturday game night. The counter that seperated the kitchen from the living room had a bowl of grapes and some petzels for snacking throughout the day. There were various nicknacks and memorabilia on the wall or on shelves, though she didn't have time to see if there was anything new before a whirlwind of activity blew in from the bedrom.
Her neighbor was looking just a little frazzeled. Brown-red hair going every which way like he hadn't yet brushed it and his signature headband was nowhere to be seen. Despite being well past morning he was also still in just sweatpants and a tank top so whatever he was rushing around for must not be something he needs to leave the house for. Though if it is he has no hope of leaving on time if the full basket of dirty clothes she can see in the bedroom is any indication.
In one arm he seems to be juggling a large box with a picture of a bulky helmet of some sort on the side and his other he seems to be doing his best to choke himself by shoving a convenience store masubi down his throat. By the time he makes it to the kitche table and drops the box he seems to have succeded. Fist thump his chest a few time while coughing before opening the box and pulling out the helmet and a bunch of cords.
It isn't until Nezumi catches a look at the calendar on the fridge and sees November 6 circled in bright red that she remembers something. Her neighbor was definitly a gamer, she's fairly sure he had set up the game system before anthing else when he first moved in. He had also been one of the first, along with his friends, to pick up the new system that came out in May to try it out. It was call NerveGear, supposedly it would allow you to experience games on a level no system had been able to do before. A fully immursive system that allowed the player to experience the game in a virtual environment as if they were truly there. They called it Full Dive.
There weren't too many games out that used it since the system was still a fairly new. Her neighbor had probably boxed it back up when he got bored with the small time games currently out, but she had heard news of a new game in the works. A revolutionay online multi-player which would allow the player to fully immerse themselves in a fantasy world. If she remembered correctly, her neighbor and his gamer friends, had signed up for an open beta of the game a while back. There had been a closed beta a few months ago to help flesh out the broad details of the world experience and hammer out the basic flow of the game. Now the development team was looking for a larger demographic to help fine tune the game before launch. It was supposed to start at 1pm today, the developers had requested those participating in the open beta to log in on time for an orientation of sorts.
Nezumi wasn't sure why he was rushing, sure it was only a couple of minutes to 1 oclock but she couldn't imagine all 10,000 testers would make it on time. The devs would probably give them some time to acclimate and arrive before starting any kind of orientation. She watched as he looked over the nervegear to make sure everything looked ok, double checking the manual to make sure he hadn't forgotten anything since he last used it. Nezumi ducked down when he suddenly turned, helmet in hand. She held her breath as he passed by to the bedroom, only letting it out once she heard the door close. She waited a couple minutes more to see if he would leave again.
"Link Start!"
Nezumi smiled, moving the vent grate aside further to climb fully out. "That should keep him busy playing fantasy hero for atleast a few hours, i'm sure he won't miss a pretzel or two in the mean time."

1: 6 of the songs you listen to most? - according to receiptify some of my top songs currently are: Slow Burn by Kacey Musgraves, Sweater Weather by The Neighbourhood, Rainbow by Kacey Musgraves, Whiskey Nose by The Silver Bars, Love On The Line (Call Now) by Her's, Tonight Belongs To You from The Prom (film version)
3: Grab the book nearest to you, turn to page 23, give me line 17. - Many girls were medically certified as "hysterical" or "of unsound mind" or even "morally degenerate", and the baby would be forcibly removed and brought up in the workhouse.

12: Ever stuck a foreign object up your nose? - yeah no
16: Simple but extremely complex. Favorite band? - it's a tie between Marian Hill or Her's. It always used to be Marian Hill but recently I fell in love with Her's music just from my sister playing her friend's music in the house. I highly recommend both bands and both have very different vibes.
