years ago, sunlit tides was the first store world i ever p*rated and played in. ah, memories <3

out of curiosity one day, i was reading the various premade household descriptions. i thought they'd be boring, but i actually became quite intrigued with their stories. i decided to try playing them.

i'm starting with the Best Friends household. pictured here are my makeovers of Ursula Lemuel and Theodora Jayne. i gave them a more glam and pretty look to match their personalities.

here's their household description:

Ursula brought her best friend, Theodora, to the island in hopes that she'd finally unwind! Her friend has everything going for her, beauty, smarts and an amazing body, but she constantly hides away. Ursula wants to bring the fun out of Theodora but doesn't intend to stay indoors and wait while there is fun to be had... there are men on this island. Plenty of men!

When I say enemies to lovers, enemies means they both fight back against each other. Actively opposing one another. Actively fighting back, actively competing, one upping each other, swiping resources from under each other's noses, sabotaging one another, hitting back just as hard as the one who struck first. Tit for tat. An eye for an eye.

I like the phrase enemies to lovers more than rivals to lovers because rivals doesn't feel as serious to me. To be someone's enemy is a deeper thing imo.

To me, enemies to lovers is the one I hate who hates me just as much becomes bearable somehow. Hate eventually turns to love (there's usually a stage that looks somewhat like friendship in there).

Me liking enemies to lovers is about the transition from hate to love and exploring the thin line and how they slip over the line. And I like when they retain some of that competitive fire in the established relationship but there are ways in which the edges have softened.

Abuser x abused ≠ Enemies to lovers

That's something else entirely and doesn't sound fun. That sounds awful to try and portray as an actual romantic dynamic and not a commentary against/cautionary tale. This would hurt me to read.

Annoyance x the annoyed ≠ Enemies to lovers

Asshole x the one the asshole keeps bothering ≠ Enemies to lovers

Would potentially piss me off depending on how much the asshole doesn't respect the autonomy of the one they're pestering

Not in the slightest. That is something else. These are all something else. I don't think bully x victim can be wholesome at all unless there's a helluva lot of repentance. Silent Voice style where the bully is filled with self loathing over their actions and works to better themselves. Even then, the weight of the bully's actions are still a raw wound.

Random rant I wanted to get out because I have a WIP where I want to tackle the enemies to lovers dynamic, but in the way that I consider to be enemies to lovers. The comments I see saying enemies to lovers is abusive annoy me. I feel like an enemy is respected, in some sense. If only for the danger that they pose or acknowledgement of their power and prowess.

Optimus Prime is Megatron's enemy, humans and the other Autobots are mere bugs and annoyances to him. An enemy must be on equal footing.

Still exploring and working out kinks, but in my story, they're both college students in space and our earthling protag Killian accidentally insults Halite, an alien from a warrior/battle culture. She is the one to strike first and consider them enemies but Killian fights back. Enemies soften into rivals, tentative acknowledgment of their similarities, you're somewhat bearable to be around, to I feel like you understand me. They both have battlelust in their veins.

Edit: I should add my distinction between enemies and rivals.

A rival wants to be better than you. Is constantly trying to get ahead.

An enemy wants to be the agent of your downfall.

I think, in this way, an enemy can either be more sinister or serious than a rival would. Rivalry is fuelled by superiority/inferiority complexes/wanting to be better, the best.

Enemy(ship? hood?) Being enemies is about the emotion hatred. Hatred fuelled perhaps by the threat they pose or by one's enemy as a person. You and your enemy are like oil and water, unable to be mixed because you are so different.

But then you find out you're both liquids. You can both be poured. Both of you can be used to cook. Friends? Lovers?

And hatred has a lot of similarities to love. To the point where it would be called adjacent, while love's opposite is indifference. Because someone indifferent feels absolutely nothing for you, while love and hate are intense, passionate emotions.

spice it up and make them former rivals/enemies (i like that trope too much). they've been stubbornly hiding their feelings for each other and now that this moment's here, there's conflict in their hearts.

Do I say something, or do I keep quiet and save my pride? Can't get the feeling off their chest. the realization hits them, sudden regret for the words unsaid

all those times they fantasized about holding hands, kissing each other, holding them close. something that could've been if only one made a move

instead, they wasted all that time scoffing and teasing, jumping to conclusions at all the hints of reciprocation and accidental flirts

or thinking the other was interested in someone else. bringing up other people to get their minds off each other.

and finally, when A is packing their things or something, B watches from a distance, gathering the courage to approach. step by step, and suddenly, they're running (cue the cliche 'stop them at the airport scene')

or it doesn't have to be that dramatic. it could be a slow walk towards a packing A, a longing look, and a responding glance from A, wondering why B looks so down

or it could be at a party to celebrate seeing A off/celebrate the end of a year. and they end up in a room alone together, away from the rest of the noise. or sitting in one's room after the party's over and they've helped to clean up

or walking out together into the night, when thoughts are most intimate

the hype has died down and they're talking about how much time has passed, how things have changed, how they're gonna miss all their friends

and the conversation ends up going into vulnerable territory. they've never seen the other like this before, so exposed and melancholy

how they regret not doing certain things, not meeting certain people. not falling in love (or something like that)

and that catches B's attention.

A notices, glancing up and down innocently. they're also feeling conflicted. surprised by B's genuine look of longing and sadness. moving towards new opportunities, but having to leave something behind.

"I have to tell you something" or even omit that outright and get straight to it.

"I like you." something as simple as that.

A looks up, confused. Defeated chuckling, "Is this a joke?"

the fact that A doesn't take it seriously hurts B. Has B been that horrible?

"No."

A is surprised by the genuine look of sadness on B's face. "For how long?"

"A while." or however long you want.

A smiles and starts to tear up, taking B's hand delicately into theirs. "I feel the same."

elation wells in B's heart before being replaced by that same regret.

or instead of asking if it's a joke, A says, "No you don't" you don't like me. that's not possible. i can't fathom being loved, much less by someone as good as you.

"don't be so cruel," A adds, voice cracking. you know the type of character who hates themselves so much they can't accept affection? the type that nothing good ever happens to, so they stop hoping.

"what do you mean?" B asks, hurt. "what makes you say that?"

A making any excuse. "You like someone else" even if it doesn't make sense and the clues are all there. making all kinds of nonsensical theories.

"I've been trying to get rid of these feelings. don't bring them back. I thought i'd be able to move on once i left." A is shedding tears, not even looking at B.

one of the things that makes me sappy about agnes & tracy is that they've known each other for so long, they can see just how much the other has grown up. like when they met they were just a couple of chubby little brats who got bullied and teased a lot (just like their older siblings 🙃). agnes remembers tracy being this brash pushy kid who tried so hard to impress others, to be cool, to hide all her insecurities from her judgmental peers and from her wonderful loving family - cuz she was the beloved baby sister, and they'd coddle & smother her if she dared express anything less than sunshine & daisies. she used to be really naive & sheltered, and painfully aware of it. terrified of change, too. after surviving college though, she learns a lot of life lessons, existential meltdowns come and go, she ends up cherishing her independence. once they're like 26, agnes looks at tracy and sees a genuinely confident and laidback woman, with nothing to prove to anybody. adult tracy even embraces some of the goofiness & dorkiness she used to suppress when she was a teenager, she's not afraid of being judged, comfortable being openly a bit of a dweeb. (cuz that's what earth bound is all about baybeee, growing up without forsaking your childhood fun & wonderrrr 🤸‍!!) agnes used to accommodate tracy's facade, even though she could see right through it, 'cause she knew it was an important security blanket. (agnes even used to hide behind tracky's feigned toughness herself sometimes, hoping the bluff would keep them both safe, hahaa.) but she's so happy and proud of her when tracy realizes she doesn't need all that anymore. honored just to be one of the supportive pillars that made it possible. aaa.

and, fucking god, tracy remembers little picky placating bullies, running away & hiding at the slightest hint of shouting. then growing into a standoffish teenager, quiet and leery, the sorta kid that kept her head down on her desk in the back of class. she remembers her childish silliness giving way to long awkward silences, her voice getting quieter every year. and tracy tries not to think of the bruises - it makes her too angry. she always tried to coax agnes out of her shell, push her to speak up for herself. and it never worked, and agnes would apologize for disappointing her. spent years just watching her best friend withdraw deeper and deeper into her addled head. but now she looks over and sees a woman who smiles more than she frowns, who goes out of her way to chat with strangers when they're out & about, who takes really tender care of their cat & their plants & tracy too - all of which is possible 'cause she's learned to take good care of herself. she knows how to set boundaries, even if it's scary. tracy can still make her laugh on a dime, and she can tell it's not forced anymore. she can hype her up for a tough phone call or a job interview, without expecting a crumpled apology after the fact. and she's a huge dork, even dorkier than tracy, but agnes finds no need to be ashamed of it anymore, and tracy finds it all the more endearing. agnes finally gets to be the person she was meant to be, and tracy's so glad she stuck by her side for the long haul 🌄

Obsessed with lovers and piners calling the object of their affections their best friend. Like yessss blur the lines between platonic and romantic love. show how important they are to you in a multifaceted way. Cover up your feelings with another kind of love that is just as true. One type of love does not negate the other and but tragedy can rip both out from under you single handedly, and it will hurt so much more that way. Losing a friend and a lover. Gaining both and not needing any labels for what they are. Using labels but having it be so much more than a title. Were they friends before they were lovers?
