Gideon Keyt House
Chagrin River and Deerfield Rds.
Gates Mills, OH
The Gideon Keyt House is located on the southwestern corner of the junction of Deerfield and Chagrin River Roads in Gates Mills, Ohio. Built in 1834, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and it is part of a Register-listed historic district, the Gates Mills Historic District. Gideon Keyt was born in Westfield, Essex Co (now Union Co.), NJ, on July 31, 1788 to James Keyt (1761-1800) and Elizabeth Ross Keyt (1763-1852). He was the grandson of James Keyt (1732-1800) and Elizabeth Jessup Keyt (1732-1824). Here he was married at the Connet Home, according to Westfield, NJ, Presbyterian Church records, to Margaret Connet, also born in Westfield. Around 1812 they moved to a farm in Lodi, Seneca Co., NY.
In June 1828 he brought his family via the Erie Canal to Buffalo, then by boat to Fairport, OH, thence to a small farm of 40 acres in Mentor, OH, in a section known as Black Brook. Finding the place swampy, they sold the land on Sept. 4, 1832, and moved to Mayfield Township, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, where he built a home on what is now the South River Road in Gates Mills, near the dam in the Chagrin River, and just north of the South Cemetery. Gideon worked at shoemaking, and had a dairy. They were members of the Methodist Church, and he was a staunch Democrat. The first Keyt Reunion was held June, 1879, at the residence of Gideon Keyt, who died on Apr. 6, 1888, aged 99. On June 1, 1982, the home was listed with the National Register of Historic Places.

Portage County is a county located in the U.S. state of Ohio. As of the 2010 census, the population was 161,419. Its county seat is Ravenna. Portage County is part of the Akron, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Combined Statistical Area. The county was created in 1807 and organized in 1808.
When first settled, the area that presently constitutes Portage County was part of the original Jefferson County, which had been organized in 1797. In 1800, the area was made part of Trumbull County, which followed the boundaries of the Connecticut Western Reserve. In 1802, all of what is now Portage County was organized under the name of Franklin Township with other townships being formed later. On February 10, 1807 the Ohio state legislature passed the act to create Portage County from Trumbull County and it took effect June 7, 1807. Portage County remained attached to Trumbull County until June 8, 1808, when the first elections were held. Initially, the county included a large area of the Western Reserve that encompassed most of present-day Summit County, all of Medina and Huron counties, and parts of Lorain and Ashland counties. There were six organized townships in 1808: Franklin, Deerfield, Aurora, Hiram, Springfield, and Hudson with new townships organized later, reaching a maximum of 30. The present-day boundaries of Portage County were established in 1840 following the 1812 creation of Medina County, a slight boundary adjustment in 1827 with Cuyahoga County, and finally the creation of Summit County in 1840, which took 10 townships from Portage County along with 3 townships from Medina County and two from Stark County.
The Portage County Courthouse was designed by architect C.G. Kistler and built in 1960. It features a simple brick design with large square windows in the front. The building, located at 203 West Main St. in the county seat of Ravenna, is still in use today and houses the Portage County Court of Common Pleas and its criminal and domestic relations divisions, as well as the Portage County Municipal Court. Portage County is named after an Indian trail that linked the Cuyahoga and Tuscarawas rivers and was known as the “Portage Trail.” The Portage Trail derives from the former travelers who used to portage their canoes along the trail.

Restoration (Deerfield) 33”x43”, cyanotype and silkscreen mounted on cradled wooden panels. This piece is part of a larger body of work focused on superfund and brownfield sites found in Northeast Ohio. The state of Ohio currently has approximately 57 superfund sites. The focus of this piece is the superfund site found in Deerfield Ohio. Per the Ohio EPA- This 11.5-acre site is located on a former coal strip mine containing a coal wash pond and stockpile. From 1974 to 1978, the site was used as a waste disposal facility for oil, resin, paint and metal plating sludge, and flammable and chlorinated solvents. Wastes were stored in underground storage tanks, 55-gallon drums, and in an open pit. Two surface water ponds and an incinerator were also located on-site. Some waste was incinerated and some was buried or dumped on the soil. The groundwater, soil, surface water, and sediments were contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, volatile organic compounds, phenols, phthalates, and heavy metals. The site was listed in the Superfund National Priorities List in September of 1983. On August 17, 2022, EPA removed the land/soil portion of the Summit National site from the NPL after determining that the soil cleanup was complete, and no further action was necessary other than continued operation and maintenance, monitoring, and five-year reviews. The groundwater portion of the site is undergoing a long-term cleanup and remains on the NPL along with the surface water and sediments that shallow groundwater may discharge to.
