IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, 9. Lauf, Alton, USA

Porsche GT Team will in Virginia den Gesamtsieg

Stuttgart. Auf dem Virginia International Raceway startet das Porsche GT Team am 19. August mit zwei 911 RSR zum neunten Saisonrennen der IMSA SportsCar Championship. Die 510 PS starken Rennwagen aus Weissach, die 2018 bereits den Zwölfstundenklassiker in Sebring sowie das Rennen in Mid-Ohio gewonnen haben, treten in der am härtesten umkämpften Klasse GTLM gegen die starke Konkurrenz von BMW, Chevrolet und Ford an. In der Klasse GTD ist das Porsche-Kundenteam Wright Motorsports mit dem 911 GT3 R am Start, der zuletzt auf der Road America seinen ersten Saisonsieg in den USA feierte. Auf der 5,263 Kilometer langen Traditionsrennstrecke in der Nähe von Alton im US-Bundesstaat Virginia fehlen zum zweitenmal in dieser Saison die Prototypen. Dadurch fahren die GT-Autos um den Gesamtsieg.

Das Rennen Der an der Grenze zu North Carolina gelegene Virginia International Raceway blickt auf eine wechselvolle Geschichte zurück. 1971 gewannen die Porsche-Legenden Hurley Haywood und Peter Gregg im Porsche 914-6 GT dort das allererste IMSA-GT-Rennen. Wegen den Folgen der Ölkrise wurde der Kurs 1974 geschlossen und erst 2000 wieder eröffnet – als erstes Motorsport-Resort der USA mit einem großen Freizeitangebot für Rennsportfans und ihre Familien.

Die Porsche-Fahrer Das Cockpit des 911 RSR mit der Startnummer 911 teilen sich Patrick Pilet (Frankreich) und Nick Tandy (Großbritannien), die Gewinner des Zwölfstundenrennens in Sebring. Die Mid-Ohio-Sieger Laurens Vanthoor (Belgien) und Earl Bamber (Neuseeland) wechseln sich im zweiten 911 RSR des Porsche GT Teams mit der Startnummer 912 ab. In der Klasse GTD setzt das Porsche-Kundenteam Wright Motorsports den 911 GT3 R ein. Mit der Startnummer 58 treten Werksfahrer Patrick Long (USA) und Porsche Selected Driver Christina Nielsen (Dänemark) an, die zuletzt auf der Road America ihren ersten Saisonsieg holten.

Die Porsche-Fahrzeuge Beim 911 RSR wurden für seine zweite Rennsaison vor allem Optimierungen am Setup vorgenommen. Der vor der Hinterachse eingebaute Motor leistet je nach Restriktorgröße rund 375 kW (510 PS). Für aerodynamische Effizienz und ein hohes Maß an Abtrieb sorgt der große Heckdiffusor in Kombination mit dem hängend angebundenen Heckflügel. Der über 368 kW (500 PS) starke 911 GT3 R wurde für die weltweiten GT3-Serien konstruiert. Eingesetzt wird er von Kundenteams, denen Porsche für 2018 ein Evolutionspaket zur Verfügung stellt.

Die Zeiten Das Rennen startet am Sonntag, 19. August, um 13.35 Uhr Ortszeit (19.35 Uhr MESZ) und dauert 2:40 Stunden. Live übertragen wird es außerhalb der USA und Kanadas im Internet auf http://www.imsa.com.

Stimmen vor dem Rennen Dr. Frank-Steffen Walliser, Leiter Motorsport und GT-Fahrzeuge: „Mit dem Rennen in Virginia biegt die spannende und hart umkämpfte IMSA SportsCar Championship auf die Zielgerade der Saison ein. Auch wenn es für uns schwierig werden wird, noch in den Titelkampf einzugreifen, so wollen wir doch auch bei diesem Rennen mit einer starken Performance das Potential unseres 911 RSR demonstrieren. Unser Ziel ist der dritte Saisonsieg mit dem 911 RSR nach Sebring und Mid-Ohio.“

Pascal Zurlinden, Gesamtprojektleiter GT Werksmotorsport: „Der Virginia International Raceway ist eine Strecke, die von den Fahrern sehr viel Präzision erfordert. Schon ein kleiner Fehler endet meistens im Grünen. Das Team wird alles tun, um unsere 911 RSR auch für dieses Rennen perfekt abzustimmen. Die Bedingungen sind für alle Beteiligten nicht einfach, nicht zuletzt wegen der erwarteten Hitze und hohen Luftfeuchtigkeit.“

Sebastian Golz, Projektleiter 911 GT3 R: „Nach der zweiten Pole-Position und dem ersten Saisonsieg für den 911 GT3 R in den USA ist unser Kundenteam Wright Motorsports bestens vorbereitet, um diese Erfolgsserie auf dem Virginia International Raceway fortzusetzen. Doch diese typisch amerikanische Rennstrecke hat ihre Tücken. Die Fahrer bewegen sich in einem extrem schmalen Grenzbereich zwischen schneller Rundenzeit und Verlust der Bodenhaftung.“

Patrick Pilet (911 RSR #911): „In Virginia zu fahren macht immer sehr viel Spaß. Die Strecke ist sehr schnell und anspruchsvoll, eine echte Herausforderung. Dass wir um den Gesamtsieg fahren, ist eine zusätzliche Motivation. 2015 haben wir mit Porsche einen Doppelsieg gefeiert, und ich hoffe, dass wir auch diesmal ganz weit vorne landen werden. Dazu muss aber alles passen, denn in den vielen schnellen Kurven darfst du dir keinen Fehler erlauben. Bei einem Ausritt ins Grüne wirst du zum Rasenmäher, und bis deine Jungs an der Box das ganze Gras aus dem Kühler geholt haben, ist das Rennen gelaufen.“

Nick Tandy (911 RSR #911): „Ich freue mich sehr auf dieses Rennen. Virginia bietet eine tolle Landschaft mit sehr viel Grün. Das erinnert mich ein wenig an die Gegend, in der ich in Großbritannien lebe. Die Strecke hat viele schnelle Kurven, die für unseren 911 RSR ganz gut passen müssten. Ich erinnere mich gerne an unseren Sieg vor drei Jahren. Wenn du auf eine Strecke zurückkehrst, auf der du schon einmal gewonnen hast, ist das immer eine ganz besondere Motivation.“

Laurens Vanthoor (911 RSR #912): „Virginia ist das drittletzte Saisonrennen. Wahnsinn, wie schnell die Zeit vergeht. Die Strecke liegt im Nirgendwo und ist sehr speziell, weil sie keinen Fehler verzeiht. Wenn du nicht aufpasst, landest du in der Wiese und fährst endlos in Richtung Wald. Die Zeit, die du dabei verlierst, holst du nie mehr auf. Insgesamt ist das eine coole Strecke, die gut für unseren 911 RSR passen sollte.“

Earl Bamber (911 RSR #912): „In Virginia startet die entscheidende Phase der Meisterschaft. Jetzt dürfen wir keinen Punkt mehr abgeben. Wir stellen uns also auf ein sehr enges und hart umkämpftes Rennen ein. Die Strecke ist faszinierend und war immer ganz gut für Porsche. Bei meinem letzten Start 2015 stand ich als Zweiter auf dem Podium. Wir wollen jede Chance, die sich uns auf der Zielgeraden der Saison bietet, so gut wie möglich nutzen und für Porsche noch den einen oder anderen Sieg mit dem 911 RSR holen.“

Patrick Long (911 GT3 R #58): „In Virginia gibt es traditionell sehr viele Sportwagenfans. Ich hoffe, dass wir ihnen ein tolles Rennen bieten können. Der Virginia International Raceway ist technisch sehr anspruchsvoll und erfordert ein perfektes Setup. Eine wichtige Rolle spielt auch die Strategie, denn wegen der großzügigen Auslaufzonen gibt es dort stets weniger Safety-Car-Phasen als auf anderen Strecken. Mit unserem ersten Saisonsieg ging ein Ruck durch das ganze Team. Mit dieser Euphorie wollen wir jetzt ein weiteres Topergebnis holen.“

Christina Nielsen (911 GT3 R #58): „Auf dem Virginia International Raceway bewegst du dich auf einem schmalen Grat. Neben der Ideallinie ist die Strecke sehr rutschig. Du musst also sehr genau abwägen, wieviel Risiko du einzugehen bereit bist. Riskierst du zu viel, geht es ab ins Gras. Das kostet Zeit. Hältst du dich aber zu sehr zurück, bist du zu langsam. Auf dieser Strecke musst du alles exakt auf den Punkt bringen.“

Sie ist aus dem Zusammenschluss der American Le Mans Series und der Grand-Am Series entstanden. Breaking down some of Auburn’s top targets in next year’s class.

Yesterday, 247 dropped their new top 247 for the 2022 class. No Auburn commits made the cut but a number of top targets were included. Here’s a breakdown of some early names to know at each position.

Quarterback

5-star Quinn Ewers

4-star MJ Morris

4-star Ty Simpson

4-star Jacurri Brown

3-star Tanner Bailey

Auburn already has its quarterback for the 2021 class in Dematrius Davis thus allowing Chad Morris to shift his attention to finding his man for the 2022 cycle. I have previously written about Morris, Simpson and Bailey. The new name to highlight today is the nation’s top ranked player Quinn Ewers.

Ewers is being billed by 247 as the best QB prospect since Trevor Lawrence. The Southlake Carroll star threw for over 4,000 yards last season tossing 40 touchdowns while only throwing 3 picks. 247’s Crystal Balls and RivalsCast have four total picks for Oklahoma being his eventual school of choice but based off a recent interview with 247’s Steve Wiltfong, Ohio State might actually be the team to beat. Team number 2? That could very well be the Auburn Tigers:

“Obviously they’re one of the most watched football teams every year,” Ewers said. “Just that moment and playing for Auburn with all their fans and millions watching online, it’s crazy to think about playing in front of that big of crowd and atmosphere, it’s just crazy.

“Coach Morris is awesome. I’ve known him for a little bit and I know people coached by him and they say he’s an awesome coach. Even my coaches at my high school have been coached by him at Lake Travis and say he’s an awesome guy to get coached by. Really smart.”

He was scheduled to visit the Plains before the pandemic broke and visits were cancelled. I expect him to make that trek eventually though once visits are allowed again. While it will be tough for Auburn to win this race, it’s clear the Tigers are a major factor alongside Clemson (who has yet to offer but could soon), Ohio State, Oklahoma and Texas. I still believe Simpson is the likeliest man to be Auburn’s 2022 QB commit but Auburn is a legitimate candidate to snag the best player in next year’s class.

Running Back

4-star Emmanuel Henderson

3-star Quinshon Judkins

3-star Trevor Etienne

The recruitment likely to dominate Auburn fans attention next cycle is Emmanuel Henderson’s. Ranked the nation’s best running back in the 2022 class by 247 and #21 overall, Henderson is one of the most explosive offensive playmakers in next year’s class. He rushed for nearly 2,000 yards last fall and 32 touchdowns for Geneva County. Interestingly, 247’s player comp for Henderson is Kerryon Johnson. The Tigers are believed to be the early favorite but this is going to an Iron Bowl battle to the finish. Could Carnell Williams sign three straight top 5 running backs? That’s where things are heading for the moment. Cadillac is working hard to return Auburn to RBU glory.

Wide Receiver

3-star Quincy McAdoo

Following an outstanding 2020 class, it’s been a bit of a struggle on the trail for Kodi Burns in the 2021 cycle. There are still some big names on the board though and with athletes like Tar’varish Dawson and Landen King already committed, Auburn can afford to be picky. As for the 2022 cycle, it’s so early that’s it’s a bit difficult to get a good handle on the WR board. Bonner recently told InsideThe AuburnTigers’s Jason Caldwell that Auburn’s offer was a big deal and Texas native Randy Masters appears to be close with Dematrius Davis. This is a position that will likely become more clear in the coming months.

Tight End

4-star Donovan Green

4-star Holden Staes

As long as Chad Morris is on staff, I expect Auburn to try and sign at least one tight end every cycle. But given the recent success on the trail signing talented tight ends, Auburn might be able to skip it in 2022 if they can’t get a truly elite target.

Offensive Line

4-star Kam Dewberry

3-star Dayne Shor

3-star Cameron Williams

Kanaya Charlton

The early returns on Jack Bicknell Jr as a recruiter have been pretty durn good. If he can somehow reel in any of 5-star Tommy Bockermeyer, 5-star Amarius Mims, 4-star Savion Byrd or 4-star James Brockermeyer this class immediately becomes one of the best Auburn has signed in some time. Even without any of those names it’s a strong group. The Tigers are likely to sign at least 5 OL in the 2021 class and could go as high as 6.

For 2022, I expect Auburn to sign a smaller group but hopefully not the tiny ones of cycles past. In my opinion, Auburn should aim to sign 4 offensive lineman every cycle. You don’t wanna just take bodies to have them so signing 3 on the occasion isn’t terrible but if Auburn can consistently bring in 4 man classes, depth should not be a problem moving forward.

In next year’s cycle you can really see Bicknell’s philosophy at work. It’s clear Auburn’s new OL coach prefers to target bigger players that can play tackle with the option to slide inside over Grimes’s preference of guards that he converts to tackles. Of Auburn’s 15 offensive line offers for 2022, 14 are to players listed as offensive tackles per 247. That single interior lineman, Kanaya Chartlon, is 6’6” 329 lbs. Bicknell is going to sign some big fellas.

The two names to keep the closest eye on early are Banks and Shor. Banks recently decommitted from Oklahoma State and is interested in visiting Auburn per Keith Niebuhr. Shor is an Auburn legacy who the Tigers made an early priority going back to Grimes’s tenure. Expect more names to emerge in the coming months. Also expect those names to be of very large human beings.

There is a lot of DL talent in the states of Alabama and Georgia in the 2022 cycle. That’s obviously a very good thing for the Tigers as you will be hard pressed to find a better recruiter of those states than Rodney Garner. The Tigers have a chance to once again sign a loaded DL class in 2021. Don’t expect that to change in 2022 either. Perry is a name to keep a close eye on as he’s been heavily recruited by not only Garner but by Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn since he was an 8th grader. That will be a heated battle between the two instate programs.

Linebacker

4-star Daniel Martin

4-star Jalon Walker

4-star Jaron Willis

4-star TJ Dudley

4-star Harold Perkins

After signing a loaded 2020 class, Travis Williams has only 1 maybe 2 spots to work with in 2021. That’s why the focus has been on elite targets 5-star Smael Mondon, 4-star Xavian Sorey and 4-star Barrett Carter. However, in 2022, T-WILL should have more spots to work with which is good news as next year’s linebacker class is loaded.

Three of Auburn’s top targets are already ranked in the top 100 for next year’s cycle. Both Daniel Martin and Jaron Willis are GA natives so you know the Tigers will have to fight hard to steal them from Kirby Smart. LSU is also a program to keep an eye on with Martin. Jalon Walker is a North Carolina native who already holds an offer from Clemson. Those are going to be some big time battles, something Travis Williams makes a frequent habit of participating in.

Instate wise, TJ Dudley already holds offers from both Auburn and Alabama. He’s only been to Auburn once so undoubtedly once visits are allowed again, the Tigers will work hard to get him back on campus as soon as possible. Coach T-WILL has quickly turned Auburn’s linebacker corps into one of the best in the country and I don’t see that changing soon. If KJ Britt and/or Owen Pappoe can hear their names called in the 1st round, it would add some serious ammunition to Williams’s already formidable recruiting pitch.

Auburn’s 2022 DB recruiting is off to a strong start. The Tigers lone two pledges in the 2022 class are both DBs. I suspect Auburn will attempt to sign a minimum of four DBs in this class, probably more.

The two top men on the board, Denver Harris and Trequon Fagans, have some positive connections to the Tigers. Auburn has made some tremendous inroads into North Shore this past cycle landing Dematrius Davis and Jaeden Roberts. They are still trying to flip Shadrach Banks as well. In the 2022 class, Denver Harris will be the most coveted member of the Mustangs and Auburn is deep in this race.

As for Fegans, he’s a standout at Oxford High School. The same program KJ Britt starred at before coming to the Plains. Auburn also recently offered Fegans’s teammate Roc Taylor. If they can flip Taylor that sure wouldn’t hurt their chances with Fegans.

Bobby Taylor is another Texan strongly considering the Tigers. He included Auburn in his top 12 earlier this month. Dominick Fields also listed Auburn in his top group this past weekend. Both are names to watch closely in next year’s cycle.

Finally, Auburn was the first program to offer Fairhope star TJ Banks doing so last week. Tennessee immediately followed suit. Banks has a number of family members that attended Auburn and given the Tigers being the first to pull the trigger, you have to like Auburn’s chances early. Long way to go and it looks unlikely any decisions will come in 2020.

ACTIVE ABILITIES:

Necromancy: can communicate with the souls of the recently deceased; can raise the spirits of the dead for a brief period of time – raising the dead continuously drains their energy and must be used carefully, but if spirits are already present (i.e. hauntings), speaking with them takes no toll despite the fact that it might appear odd to watch them chatting with thin air.

Touch of Death: while the children of Thanatos can’t actually kill anyone via touch, they can drain a bit of their opponent’s life force – this ability at its maximum can render others unconscious, but while it may charge the child of Thanatos for a short time, the obtained energy will eventually wear off and the power won’t be available again until at least a few hours’ recharge.

Invisibility: Thanatos is known to carry out his reaping duties while invisible and his children have inherited this ability, but can only hold it for a maximum of about five minutes at a time with at least thirty minutes in between uses.

HEADCANONS:

Wes literally lives for Halloween. They’re usually more on the quiet and reserved side of things, but come October, their mood can switch to bright and bubbly at a moment’s notice. Halloween itself is that one rare day in the whole of the year that they don’t feel the label of “freak” clinging to their back. Wes has been finding comfort in graveyards since well before they were aware of their godly heritage, and they have often made better friends out of spirits than the living.

Wes is a solitary practicing witch. They don’t have powers like the children of Hecate or Trivia, however. Their status as a witch is purely spiritual and the craft they practice is a matter of reverence and regard to natural energies. Being thrust into the world of Greek and Roman gods has not changed their beliefs, but, in fact, widened them. Wes makes use of Temple Hill to send prayers and/or requests to the gods.

Imagine if you died and met your second dad. Sounds crazy, right? Well, then I guess that makes me a fucking lunatic.

Wesley Austen Novak met their godly parent en route to the emergency room. Lying there in the ambulance, they found themself blinking up at a Mr. Tall Dark & Handsome as he briefed them on two realities: one, that accepting Trevor McClane’s dare to swim across the pool in the middle of a thunderstorm was about one of the most idiotic things they’d ever done, and two, they were the demigod child of the god of death, aka. the “grim reaper”, which was one of the very few reasons why they’d be coming back from this dumbass stunt.

Wes always knew they were a little odd, but a demigod? Talk about a plot twist.

Wesley’s unbeating heart started up again seemingly on its own, to the shock and befuddlement of the Landen paramedics. As soon as they snapped up on their stretcher like something out of a horror movie jump scare, Thanatos was gone.

Wes was adopted and they were never told otherwise. Their single father was a lawyer who would be a hypocrite if he raised his kid on a lie while he preached the value of honesty. However, Wesley struggled to be honest with their father from a young age. Christopher Novak had always wanted a son. It was evident in his encouragement for Wesley to play sports, join Boy Scouts, play video games or go exploring with the other guys in the neighborhood… Wesley was good at all of these things, but they didn’t see why it was frowned upon when they invited the girls to play with the boys or why they were being lame when they wanted to do arts and crafts instead of staging an army mission on the playground. They didn’t understand, but they didn’t argue.

Wesley’s dad was everything to them. They wanted nothing more than to make him proud, and if that meant being the son he had always dreamed of, so be it. Landen, Ohio was a small, conservative, Midwestern town. Terms like genderqueer and nonbinary were practically unheard of in a district supported prominently by private religious education. Classes were tight-knit and theology was woven into the class material whether the students followed the faith that sponsored the institution or not, but the parents often paid this spiritual discrepancy little mind. The private schools held the highest ratings in the region, and who didn’t want that esteem for their child?

Wesley wasn’t the only child in the private school system who didn’t conform to the schools’ ideals. When they were admitted to their father’s Jesuit alma mater – an all-boys academy – they were just as thrilled as he was. The pride Christopher attributed to his high school had won Wesley over to the desire of attending it early on, but as the months went by, Wes started to realize that the glamour built up around St. Xavier Academy wasn’t all it was chalked up to be.

High school came with the opportunity for Wesley to start branching out and becoming their own person, but rather than drifting towards those who could have been their true friends, Wesley allowed their father to herd them with the boys of his own high school companions. Christopher had been a rather popular figure in his day, so it didn’t come as much of a surprise to Wesley when his friends, and thus their sons, also turned out to be popular among the student body. Wesley got swept up in their tide, pinned by a seemingly indomitable force of peer pressure and the need to please their parent. They pretended to be someone they weren’t, and it ended with them electrocuted in Trevor’s backyard swimming pool at a party that he wasn’t supposed to be having.

After Wesley met Thanatos, everything changed. When they say death changes a person, they aren’t kidding. Finding out they had a god for a parent turned Wesley’s entire world upside down. Suddenly it made so much sense why they spent all of their after-school study sessions in the cemetery and why they were drawn to a spirituality that dealt with balances between life and death. It also explained why their classmates in theatre kept giving them bizarre looks when they started chatting with the attractive young guy that hung around in the rafters, who, according to them, wasn’t really there.

Wesley started doing research on their parental deity (as one does when they suddenly find out they’re a demigod) and soon became hooked on the repeated theme that death has no gender – which makes perfect sense, when you think about it. Everybody dies at some point, right? Everybody mortal, anyway. Race, sexuality, gender– in pretty much every representation around the world, Death didn’t give a fuck. And oftentimes, Death didn’t have any defining identities either. So Wesley thought, ‘If death has no gender, why should I?’ Finding courage in the history and nature of their parent finally prompted Wes to step up and release the feelings they had kept caged nearly all their life.

Coming out as genderqueer at a conservative, religious, all-boys high school didn’t go well for Wesley. They lost the fake friends their dad had matched them with, and worse, suddenly they were the one bearing the brunt of their teasing. They tried to make new friends, but having hung around with the school terrors, even on the passive fringes, meant that their name was permanently tarnished within the halls of the academy. The administration, too, struggled with how to handle their declaration when certain parents called in in an uproar. Eventually, Wes made it easy for the lot of them: they dropped out.

Christopher was furious. Wesley was mortified. He urged Wesley to return to school, assuring them that they’d work something out, but Wesley couldn’t bring themself to do so. What’d been done, was done. The child of Thanatos had seen their last of private education. The day after dropping out, while Christopher was out at work, Wesley woke up to someone’s unrelenting knocking at the front door. When they finally dragged their ass out of bed half-awake to answer it, they found a pretty little satyr quivering on the step with a folded note and a small box in hand.

The note came from their father and spoke of a camp up in New York State where they could be free to express themself away from the threats of the mortal world. The small box contained a gift – a simple necklace with a black, crescent moon pendant hanging on the string. ‘Not to be rude,’ they told the satyr, ‘but this is all starting to sound a little far-fetched to me.’ Wesley kept the pendant but, with their apologies, sent Sage – the satyr – away. Not even her hooves had yet convinced them out of their gloom. It wasn’t until they took a walk over to their favorite cemetery that afternoon to think things over that Wes came abruptly face-to-face with the fact that they weren’t actually going crazy. One doesn’t exactly unsee a young, grieving widow transforming into a bloodthirsty empousa, nor do they forget their necklace expanding into the form of a large and very very sharp scythe at its owner’s sense of danger. The scythe bit probably would have been cooler if Wes had had the slightest clue how to use it; but alas, it was Sage who saved the day.

The satyr led them to safety and further to the sanctuary of Camp Half Blood. Wesley didn’t get to say goodbye to their father and he was never enlightened about their true parentage. For his own safety, Wesley has not contacted him since their departure.

Wesley arrived at Camp Half Blood when they were sixteen years old. In April of 2017, they transferred to Camp Jupiter and joined the Legion in hopes of improving their combat skills and someday taking up classes at UNR. Their aloofness, lack of recommendation, and lax attitude toward authority has placed them in the Fifth Cohort, but Wes doesn’t pay any mind to labels. They’re still figuring out their place in this world of gods and monsters, and being a graceus in Roman territory doesn’t make it any easier.
