Belated exhibition promotion: I was incredibly honored to have been invited by Professor Scott Ludgwig of Appalachian State University to participate in the 2022 International Youth Printmakers Invitational Exhibition in Changsha, China. This exhibition showed more than 100 representative works by 43 printmakers from China, France, the UK and the USA as well as other locations. The exhibition was organized by the Changsha Normal University and the Printmaking Art Committee of Hunan Artists Association. The Co-Curators were Marc Brunier, Liz Roth, Liu Jing and @scottludwigart It was a fabulous show that was a true privilege to be a part of. Marian, one of Digswell Arts' print members participating in this year's open studios. Her most recent set of prints takes a closer look at how the seedpod from the horse chestnut, one of our most iconic trees, slowly cracks open to release the conker. She invites the viewer to pause and consider the metamorphosis happening in the parks and gardens around us. Meet Marian in the print room where you can see her most recent prints plus the results of her experiments colouring cloth using oak gall nuts and chalk collected in Digswell. Restoration (Deerfield) 33”x43”, cyanotype and silkscreen mounted on cradled wooden panels. This piece is part of a larger body of work focused on superfund and brownfield sites found in Northeast Ohio. The state of Ohio currently has approximately 57 superfund sites. The focus of this piece is the superfund site found in Deerfield Ohio. Per the Ohio EPA- This 11.5-acre site is located on a former coal strip mine containing a coal wash pond and stockpile. From 1974 to 1978, the site was used as a waste disposal facility for oil, resin, paint and metal plating sludge, and flammable and chlorinated solvents. Wastes were stored in underground storage tanks, 55-gallon drums, and in an open pit. Two surface water ponds and an incinerator were also located on-site. Some waste was incinerated and some was buried or dumped on the soil. The groundwater, soil, surface water, and sediments were contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, volatile organic compounds, phenols, phthalates, and heavy metals. The site was listed in the Superfund National Priorities List in September of 1983. On August 17, 2022, EPA removed the land/soil portion of the Summit National site from the NPL after determining that the soil cleanup was complete, and no further action was necessary other than continued operation and maintenance, monitoring, and five-year reviews. The groundwater portion of the site is undergoing a long-term cleanup and remains on the NPL along with the surface water and sediments that shallow groundwater may discharge to.
