Dear Mr. Gaiman,

I’ve been meaning to write to you for a bit and today -  May 1st - is a prefect bit of timing.

I’d like to address 2 1/2 things if I may: You recently posted a conversation you had about losing a cat and how much the death of a pet hits you. My spouse and I have and have had a number of pets - best friends really - pass away. One of the ways we have come to deal with their moving on is to make up a story.

(To be honest, yet another story. Our friends live very full lives, indeed.) Our Tuxedo cat, Tybalt, is now playing bass in a Journey cover band that tours. I travel a lot for work and that allows “Tybalt” to send us postcards telling of his latest adventures. Since today is May Day and the expiration of the Writer’s contract I wanted to say bravo to you for posting about it and the subtles of the issues at hand. Most people looking at Hollywood will not give carful consideration to what is at hand.

Since you have the currency of a celebrity that is thoughtful and nuanced your voice carries over much of the rhetoric. I thank you for that. I should say at this point that I also work in film and television and have for most of the last 30 years. I am a grip and enjoy the craft of my job.

While the concerns of your Guild are valid and should be addressed i would like to point out that your voice and those of your colleagues are heard. All the national pages and news outlets are carrying the story. As they should. In 2021, IATSE (the union the covers all the below the line craft people in the United Staes and Canada with approximately a 150,000 members) was set to renew our contact that August. Our asks for that contract were minimal and most of us assumed the contract would be updated with little haggling. The producers balked. They, in fact, wanted to get rid of a number of long held points in our contract. This went on for four months. Something that never happed in my 30 years of work. I won’t go into all the details. I assume that you have a passing familiarity with the issues.

My point to all of this is that our voice was never heard. All the news outlets merely interviewed the producers and only gave their side of the story. And this happens every time the is a contract or safety issue (Think “Rust”. Reporters never interviewed other armors. The closest that came to a below the line voice was an essay written by a Prop Master - who happens to be Martin Scorsese’s daughter.)

Most producers have little idea of what it takes to make a show. But they are the only ones who are quoted. Overlapping during these 4 months was the John Deere strike (with just over 10,000 members).  And good for them. 

It should be noted that their coverage was far greater than ours.

There are 7 stories about the John Deere strike in the New York Times morgue. There are none for the IATSE contract negotiations. I can go on but I feel I should wrap this up. If you’ve read this far, I thank you.

Expanded Miraculous Changes to Canon Miraculous

So with this post, it sent me down a little rabbit hole just thinking about Chinese Miraculous and how they're set up, and this want to just, try and make them work. Make them make sense.

As one of the big major issues for Miraculous is that, they just exist. And that's it. Only thing we truly know is that they, for sure, are meant to be used for good, and were used to help humanity.

But we don't have anything on why. Why are certain Miraculous grouped together? Why are Ladybug and Cat yin-yang? Why are the 5 specifically based on Wu Xing? Why are the Seven grouped together? Why are the Zodiac grouped together? Did they come before or did they inspire the Legend of the Zodiac Race? What is the role of all Miraculous? What do these groups do that's different from each other?

We just don't have these answers.

So the idea behind this post is to just, delve into plausible lore and given some idea. Some of which will just work off what I've thought about before.

The Zodiac

The Zodiac I think would've best served working off individual growth. Tying them to virtues could be great as there are a lot of virtues out there, but there's also a lot that are similar in meaning. And it can work off the Zodiac tied to personality traits and certain animals embody certain virtues, like Dog can be tied to Loyalty, Rooster to Honesty, Pig to Wisdom, Ox to Determination, Goat to Creativity, ect..

It can nicely add to what Zodiac should go to who, who needs to learn these virtues.

The Bagua

Since The Shanghai Special brought up the Prodigious tied to Bagua, which is apart of Taoism and tied to Wu Xing and yin-yang, and it was a prior concept plan for Miraculous; Bagua did feel fitting to be Miraculous and apart of the Chinese Miracle Box. It does expand the numbers, bumping the 19 to 27/28, but there is also solid background to work off of that can make it plausible to exist. Additionally, there are a few animals that should exist as Miraculous when tied to China that have yet to appear (like Bear, Crane, Deer, Lion, Mantis, and Eagle).

Core idea is that these Miraculous would bring forth what Bagua represents, covering what people may want or what they need.

Bear represents family, ancestry, and foundation. It comes to assist those who feel isolated.

Fish is tied to wealth, prosperity, and opportunity. Coming to those who are in need of financial aid.

Songbird is tied to reputation, expression, and fame. Coming to those who desire to be known or to change perspective.

Crane is tied to romantic love, union, and kinship; seeking to be the matchmaker and to help those desire love find love.

Deer is tied to creativity, inspiration, and projects; to help boost productivity, find inspiration, and inspire creation (it does technically stand for children and the future, but it's not easy to do a Miraculous power related to that).

Eagle is tied to travel, community, and guidance. Working off those in need of freedom, connection, or a change of pace.

Lion is tied to purpose, change, and ambition; helping those find their calling.

Mantis is tied to knowledge, learning, and wisdom; seeking to help those expand their perspective.

The maybe bonus, Snake (with Sass made to be a Cobra instead), the possible unofficial 9th member of the Bagua, reflecting balance, duality, vitality, and energy. Comes to those in need of harmony or energy. Partly incorporated Snake as it's one of those animals that has a lot to it and you could do a lot with, so might be nice to have more for it. It's a reason I dabble in the snake renling yesterday. And given the 9th slot of Bagua represents yin-yang, I thought of a possible additional unique role this could play...

The Seven

The Seven I'm thinking should have the role tied to being THE defenders and preservers of humanity, fighting for the greater good and keeping balance. Typically, the focus is fighting for the greater good, and individual growth and needs aren't as prioritized (you can still learn and grow with them, it's just not a kwami priority in contrast to the Zodiac and Bagua kwamis).

And to play off yin-yang exists everywhere, and Wu Xing is heavily tied to the concept and goes through cycles, the idea is that, as a safeguard against the wish, who are the wish granting duo will alternate by lunar year, and all would have themes to work off recreating reality:

Ladybug and Cat are Creation and Destruction.

Butterfly and Bee are Chaos and Order.

Fox and Peafowl are Deception and Truth.

Turtle doesn't have a set counterpart in the Seven, and instead is meant to be the mediator and peacekeeper between conflicting pairs.

Potentially, Turtle could also be a key in undoing a wish, and if there's the unofficial 9th member of Bagua that is the Snake, that could be Turtle's counterpart and help undo a wish made.

If this Snake was more Ouroborus themed (and Sass was more music based), given power ideas I had in mind for Turtle, these two could echo Time and Space. Which can be big enough concepts you can get them being split into two different groups, but you can also get them having the ability to undo a recreate reality.

Extra bonus that Turtle and Snake are a pair in Chinese mythology, commonly counted together in the Four Symbols.

And both are tied to creation myths in China, which has another turtle and snake mentioned together with Nuwa (creator goddess who is a human headed snake) and Ao (world turtle); though their relation isn't so pleasant in contrast to the Black Turtle.

To those who stopped to read, thanks for reading. Hopes this helps give something more to Miraculous and the groups that exist/can exist. As I feel all Miraculous are lacking in individuality and it wouldn't hurt to have defined rolls or purpose to them.

Martyn, who is currently one of four targets for a whole bunch of red names and has been running solo because of it, has just run into his soulmate. The very person he's been avoiding for the whole game, but especially now. Great.

Cleo blinks, seemingly surprised that she found him. Or had run into him, since she might not have been looking in the first place. She probably wasn't. They hated his guts or whatever.

"Martyn." She says, a frown instantly forming on her face. The speed at which it does so would be impressive to anybody else. But it's not to him. He's seen that frown form way too many times to count over far too many days.

Martyn hates it a little more every single time.

"Cleo." He responds, arms being crossed over his chest. It feels like a defensive position. Martyn doesn't know why. He has nothing to be defensive over. Not this time. But maybe it's Cleo's face that makes him get so worked up now.

"Where the hell have you been?" Cleo says, looking down at him with disdain. There's a scowl on her face, one Martyn has unfortunately grown quite used too. He resists the urge to huff in annoyance upon seeing it.

"Around," Martyn mumbles, and stops himself from scoffing. That would just provoke Cleo more. And arguing soulmates isn't what anyone needs rights now, even if it is very tempting to start. "Why's it matter?"

"It matters because the three of us-" Cleo says, alluding to Scott and Pearl as well. Martyn wonders what they ever had to do with this. "-Have been spying on the reds."

"So?" He says, arching an eyebrow. Sure, okay, those three had been risking their lives and spying on the reds. Whoopee. What did any of that have to do with him?

"A little more help would've been nice." Cleo places a hand on their hip, frowning even deeper than before.

"I'm not obligated to do anything with you." Matyn replies, his frown now matching theirs. They weren't like other soulmate pairs, together and insufferable all the time. They didn't even want to see each other most days. So why did he have to help them?

"You're my soulmate." Cleo counters. And counters like she wasn't the one who abandoned him over one nether trip. Like he had been the one to chose another soulmate instead of the one he'd been given.

"You chose Scott." Martyn snaps back, the words stinging as he says them. He pretends it doesn't, and keeps glaring at the zombie before him. He doesn't know if the pretending works.

(At first, having no soulmate hadn't bothered him. Martyn had always done just fine on his own, he didn't need the universe telling who to be friends with or anything like that. He didn't need anybody.)

(That was at the start. This is now.)

Cleo snaps back at him, a fire in her voice. One that's always there, but gets more intense sometimes. "And I'm still stuck with you."

"Well, I didn't tie us together!" Martyn snaps back, bitter. He never wanted a soulmate, he didn't ask for one! "I didn't want this either!"

Cleo opens their mouth, most likely to bite back at him, but a sound stops them. A sound of twigs cracking underfoot of, people moving uncaringly through the undergrowth because they can afford to and don't have to worry about bring found anymore.

There's a sound of a commotion coming from the treeline, and a yell that is certainly Grian's. Martyn and Cleo bigh whip their heads towards the sound, almost in union, eyes already wide and panicked.

Martyn, who is now frozen like a deer in headlights, hopes their squabble didn't alert the pack if them. He's pretty sure that if they died because of that, Cleo would bring them both back to life just to throttle and kill him again.

Unelss the soulbond was broken after death. Something he might be finding out sooner rather than later.

"Reds!" Cleo hisses, already starting to back away. Martyn, rather uncharacteristically, does not follow. He doesn't even bolt first like most people would expect him too. Grian, and now Joel's, threatening whoops, are getting louder and louder. He still isn't moving.

They're both going to die very soon if he stands there and can't unfreeze himself. So Cleo makes a decision for the both of them. (Not because she cares or anything, but because she doesn't want to die. It's certainly not the first one, or a combination of both. Certainly not.)

"Come here!" She snaps, grabbing Martyn the arm. He blinks when she does, snapping out of whatever funk the sounds had put him in. And so Martyn tumbles after her, away from the sound of the reds, and ignoring how Cleo's touch feels like flames on his skin.

She digs them out a small hole, knowing it was their best bet for not being found. Martyn goes in first, and Cleo right after him. They block up the hole, sealing the small area as tight and safe as they can. It's dark, in their hiding space, and with barely any room for two people to fit inside. But it's better then a bugger hole that can be found quicker.

Cleo sat pressed against his right, their breathing ragged from the running and the small space. Martyn didn’t mind it, or the closeness. It was better than the reds, and the footsteps currently overhead, would have been.

The group runs over where they had been standing just moments before, and Martyn feels his breathing stop when they do. It barely resumes once the noise is gone, and the two soulmates are left ro the quiet of their hole. He doesn't think Cleo recats much better, either, if they way she grabs his arm again and holds on like their life depends on it.

They stay like that, shoved together in a stupidly small hole, until the sounds of footsteps are long gone. Cleo doesn't let go of his arm. He think they actually drag him closer, for whatever reason. The dangers probably long gone, they don't have to stay in this hole together anymore....

(Even though it is kinda nice...)

He turns, and finds himself near face to face with Cleo. Martyn blinks in suprise, his face feeling hot all of a sudden. Cleo blinks back at him, yellow eyes wide and (dare he say it) pretty.

"Kinda close there." Martyn mutters, his tone cheeky. Teasing even. It's nit often he can tease Cleo like that, with no sense of malice or threat behind it. It's...nice.

And happening in a two by two hole, of all things.

"You don't seem to mind." Cleo huffs, amsued, shuffling closer somehow. "What have you even done all day? Other than avoid me and dying."

"Normal stuff, I guess." Martyn shrugs in response. He'd just been running around, prepping his tools and trying not to take damage; since he never knew how close the reds where to him or his rather unfortunate soulmate. So yeah, normal stuff, if you left out any and all mischief that is.

Cleo sighs. They know that's the best awnser they'll get out of him. The zombie has since learned to stop pushing his buttons for more information, at least. It just leaves them both frustrated more than it does anything helpful. "We kinda needed you back there. They almost caught us spying."

"Well, it's a good thing they didn't." He mutters, no hint of any sympathy in his voice. It was their fault if they got caught anyways, for spying on a pack of that many red names. Even if the three of them had hidden underground, like they were now, or had tried to use Pearl's insanity to their advantage. It was still a dumb plan. They were lucky it worked out so well. That it worked at all.

"Martyn." Cleo sighs, glaring at him. The fire's back in her voice again, but not as intense as it was before. Martyn still flinches under it anyways.

Martyn looks at her, curious. He was right, it was a good thing they didn't! And he had no obligation to help anybody! Why was Cleo so insistant on this!? "What?"

"We needed you." They say, a little quieter than normal. And the last part is tacked on, like an admission they don't want to say. "I need you."

"It's kinda terrifying, my soulmate running around all willy-nilly." Martyn doesn't say anything, not at first, so he lets his soulmate keep talking. "You could just die at any point."

"....Is that why Pearl and Scott are striking together for now?" He mutters, now looking at the wall instead of Cleo; ignoring the yellow eyes that stare at him still. Eyes that are yellow like his...

"Yeah." Cleo responds. Her hand is still on Martyn’s arm. She takes it away. He tries and fails to not miss the contact, to not want it back desperately.

(Stupid...this is stupid....but Martyn can't help himself...)

"Sorry." He mutters, looking back over at Cleo again. There's some emtion shining in their eyes, Martyn's almost too scared to know what it is. (He thinks he knows anyways.) "I'll try and do better."

"You don't have much time to try." Cleo says, like a grim reminder. The zombie's voice is flat again, no longer quiet like it had been before. Their hiding spot now feels cramped, all of a sudden.

Martyn can't imagine why.

"I know." He huffs again, just like he had earlier. The hole is still cramped, he can still feel Cleo practically breathing in his ear. Their knees are brushing, the contact still feels like flames. "Let's get outta this hole?"

"Sure." Cleo hums. It doesn't sound like she wants to leave the hole, not just yet. Martyn, for a reason he pretends not to know, finds himself agreeing.

"But first," Cleo says, and leans forward. Martyn doesn't protest, and smiles into what comes next.

This is going to be a bit of a quick post tonight.

As always ask for more context if you would like! The boring answer would be mosquitos and fleas.

If we are including humanoid beings as "creatures" I would want to say Spiritbloods. Giant, supernaturally strong, immortal people( Non-aging and disease immune), the result of the union of a human and a powerful spirit. In stories they are typically either thought of as heroes, or as terrifying beings that can destroy entire cities singlehandedly. Luckily they are fairly rare. Otherwise there are things like Flesh-eating deer, the Giant birds of Ikopesh, Kirki, Sea-serpents, Tiamawa, Demons, Spirits, Kosheki, etc.

The Great Storyteller

However, as far as coolest goes, I would have to say the Dragon, Ilhumba (aka Halu, Akir, Patukasu, etc). He is the largest and oldest living being in Kobani. He predates humanity, and indeed most life on Kobani. He is the eldest born of the Mother Serpent (and it is believed was a conspirator in their murder alongside the first spiritblood). The dragon may sleep for centuries or even milennia at a time, hidden beneath mountain ranges, glaciers, and even in the depths of the oceans. From nose to the tip of one of his five tails he measures 236 kilometers. The people of Ik'at tribe, who live on the islands beside where he currently sleeps, describe him as seal-headed, with the horns of a reindeer, and with 12 clawed feet (I wish I was a better artist). His actual scales are golden in color however he is covered in many accumulated feet of algae, moss, and other forms of life.

The dragon is sentient and capable of speech, it is this that has earned that creature the title, The Storyteller. Most legends, myths, and religious beliefs in Kobani can be traced back to the testimonies of the Dragon. As of the start of the Testament series, Ilhumba is sleeping beneath the sea ice of the Darutic Ocean, shown below.

Yesterday the National Economic Council called a meeting of the Supply Chain Disruptions Task Force, which the Biden-Harris administration launched in 2021, to discuss the impact of the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge and the partial closure of the Port of Baltimore on regional and national supply chains. The task force draws members from the White House and the departments of Transportation, Commerce, Agriculture, Defense, Labor, Health and Human Services, Energy, and Homeland Security. It is focused on coordinating efforts to divert ships to other ports and to minimize impacts to employers and workers, making sure, for example, that dock workers stay on payrolls. 

Today, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg convened a meeting of port, labor, and industry partners—ocean carriers, truckers, local business owners, unions, railroads, and so on—to mitigate disruption from the bridge collapse. Representatives came from 40 organizations including American Roll-on Roll-off Carrier; the Georgia Ports Authority; the International Longshoremen’s Association, the International Organization of Masters, Mates and Pilots; John Deere; Maersk; Mercedes-Benz North America Operations; Seabulk Tankers; Under Armour; and the World Shipping Council.  

Today the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration announced it would make $60 million available immediately to be used as a down payment toward initial costs. Already, though, some Republicans are balking at the idea of using new federal money to rebuild the bridge, saying that lawmakers should simply take the money that has been appropriated for things like electric vehicles, or wait until insurance money comes in from the shipping companies. 

In 2007, when a bridge across the Mississippi River in Minneapolis suddenly collapsed, Congress passed funding to rebuild it in days and then-president George W. Bush signed the measure into law within a week of the accident. 

In the past days, we have learned that the six maintenance workers killed when the bridge collapsed were all immigrants, natives of Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador. Around 39% of the workforce in the construction industry around Baltimore and Washington, D.C., about 130,000 people, are immigrants, Scott Dance and María Luisa Paúl reported in the Washington Post yesterday. 

Some of the men were undocumented, and all of them were family men who sent money back to their home countries, as well. From Honduras, the nephew of one of the men killed told the Associated Press, “The kind of work he did is what people born in the U.S. won’t do. People like him travel there with a dream. They don’t want to break anything or take anything.”  

In the Philadelphia Inquirer today, journalist Will Bunch castigated the right-wing lawmakers and pundits who have whipped up native-born Americans over immigration, calling immigrants sex traffickers and fentanyl dealers, and even “animals.” Bunch illustrated that the reality of what was happening on the Francis Scott Key Bridge when it collapsed creates an opportunity to reframe the immigration debate in the United States.

Last month, Catherine Rampell of the Washington Post noted that immigration is a key reason that the United States experienced greater economic growth than any other nation in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The surge of immigration that began in 2022 brought to the U.S. working-age people who, Director Phill Swagel of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office wrote, are expected to make the U.S. gross domestic product about $7 trillion larger over the ten years from 2023 to 2034 than it would have been otherwise. Those workers will account for about $1 trillion dollars in revenues. 

Curiously, while Republican leaders today are working to outdo each other in their harsh opposition to immigration, it was actually the leaders of the original Republican Party who recognized the power of immigrants to build the country and articulated an economic justification for increased immigration during the nation’s first major anti-immigrant period. 

The United States had always been a nation of immigrants, but in the 1840s the failure of the potato crop in Ireland sent at least half a million Irish immigrants to the United States. As they moved into urban ports on the East Coast, especially in Massachusetts and New York, native-born Americans turned against them as competitors for jobs.

The 1850s saw a similar anti-immigrant fury in the new state of California. After the discovery of gold there in 1848, native-born Americans—the so-called Forty Niners—moved to the West Coast. They had no intention of sharing the riches they expected to find. The Indigenous people who lived there had no right to the land under which gold lay, native-born men thought; nor did the Mexicans whose government had sold the land to the U.S. in 1848; nor did the Chileans, who came with mining skills that made them powerful competitors. Above all, native-born Americans resented the Chinese miners who came to work in order to send money home to a land devastated by the first Opium War.

Democrats and the new anti-immigrant American Party (more popularly known as the “Know Nothings” because members claimed to know nothing about the party) turned against the new immigrants, seeing them as competition that would drive down wages. In the 1850s, Know Nothing officials in Massachusetts persecuted Catholics and deported Irish immigrants they believed were paupers. In California the state legislature placed a monthly tax on Mexican and Chinese miners, made unemployment a crime, took from Chinese men the right to testify in court, and finally tried to stop Chinese immigration altogether by taxing shipmasters $50 for each Chinese immigrant they brought.   

When the Republicans organized in the 1850s, they saw society differently than the Democrats and the Know Nothings. They argued that society was not made up of a struggle over a limited economic pie, but rather that hardworking individuals would create more than they could consume, thus producing capital that would make the economy grow. The more people a nation had, the stronger it would be.

In 1860 the new party took a stand against the new laws that discriminated against immigrants. Immigrants’ rights should not be “abridged or impaired,” the delegates to its convention declared, adding that they were “in favor of giving a full and efficient protection to the rights of all classes of citizens, whether native or naturalized, both at home and abroad.”

Republicans’ support for immigration only increased during the Civil War. In contrast to the southern enslavers, they wanted to fill the land with people who supported freedom. As one poorly educated man wrote to his senator, “Protect Emegration and that will protect the Territories to Freedom.”

Republicans also wanted to bring as many workers to the country as possible to increase economic development. The war created a huge demand for agricultural products to feed the troops. At the same time, a terrible drought in Europe meant there was money to be made exporting grain. But the war was draining men to the battlefields of Stones River and Gettysburg and to the growing U.S. Navy, leaving farmers with fewer and fewer hands to work the land. 

By 1864, Republicans were so strongly in favor of immigration that Congress passed “an Act to Encourage Immigration.” The law permitted immigrants to borrow against future homesteads to fund their voyage to the U.S., appropriated money to provide for impoverished immigrants upon their arrival, and, to undercut Democrats’ accusations that they were simply trying to find men to throw into the grinding war, guaranteed that no immigrant could be drafted until he announced his intention of becoming a citizen. 

Support for immigration has waxed and waned repeatedly since then, but as recently as 1989, Republican president Ronald Reagan said: “We lead the world because, unique among nations, we draw our people—our strength—from every country and every corner of the world. And by doing so we continuously renew and enrich our nation…. Thanks to each wave of new arrivals to this land of opportunity, we're a nation forever young, forever bursting with energy and new ideas, and always on the cutting edge, always leading the world to the next frontier. This quality is vital to our future as a nation. If we ever closed the door to new Americans, our leadership in the world would soon be lost.”

The workers who died in the bridge collapse on Tuesday “were not ‘poisoning the blood of our country,’” Will Bunch wrote, quoting Trump; “they were replenishing it…. They may have been born all over the continent, but when these men plunged into our waters on Tuesday, they died as Americans.”

I'm also ashamed to write this but. I need some, as they say, personal time with myself. I've been too afraid to while we've been out, and now that I don't get to be alone it's even rarer. They made some small comments to each other earlier, jokes after we cleared out the witches, that just got me so riled up.

I don't know what it is about it that got me, but I need some alone time. I close the door after they all go relax anyway, this is normal.

I'm ashamed to even admit this, but I bribed their local archer and woodsman into an intimate moment with me. I feel disgusted with myself. I feel one way and yet enjoy something that most like me would not. And I enjoy it. I feel such pleasure in the union of flesh, and it makes me disgusted with myself.

I feel as though I'm not allowed to like it. That I'm lying to myself if I do. In my post-activity haze, I took to the outdoors, took a dip in the river to wash everything off of myself. I killed a deer, though before I could finish stripping it of it's meat, I heard wolves in the distance. It's better to go back inside I think.

Tonight we sleep here, and then I hope we can leave for good.

THE WOLPERTINGER

Remember when I made a post about the Dahut/Dahu, during my very recent Cold Winter series? Well meet his German cousin: the Wolpertinger! Also called the Wolperdinger, Woipertinger or Woiperdinger. Just like with the dahu, the wolpertinger is a completely fictional creature that was invented to mock people, as a sort of “running joke” that became part of the folklore.

There are actually traces of the Wolpertinger existing as a folkloric being, since Bavarian legends about the beast were recorded in the 16th century, but the actual “existence” of the wolpertinger started in the 19th century, when taxidermists began creating “stuffed wolpertingers”. Originally these fake animals were created as a nod to the local folktales, to be bought by Bavarian families as a weird little decoration or as a tool to help storytelling when the wolpertinger legend was told to children… But the “stuffed wolpertinger” fad grew unexpectedly fast, as people found a new use for these fake bodies: selling them to tourists and visitors of Bavaria… This was the start of the fame of the wolpertinger. Whenever people wanted to scam or mock foreigners, when someone was ignorant of everything about Bavaria or obviously gullible and naïve, a stuffed wolpertinger was presented to them, and the beast was described as a part of the local fauna everybody knew about – and the “victim” was incited to buy the stuffed body as a souvenir of their trip to Bavaria. This “good joke” lasted to this day, as you can still find dead wolpertingers for sale on markets or in souvenir shops across Bavaria.

The wolpertinger actually has several different names depending on the part of Bavaria you are in: Oibadrischi, Rammeschuksn, Raurackl… And equivalents of the wolpertinger also started appearing in other regions of Germany: rasselbock in the central regions, dilldapp in Hesse, elwetrisch in the western lands… To this proliferation of names corresponds a proliferation of appearances: for you see, the whole point of the taxidermized wolpertingers was originally to just put together various animal elements to create a fantasy beast fitting the elusive and mysterious tales of a strange creature. As a result, each taxidermist did a different wolpertinger, and the creature had no fixed or “canon” appearance. The only thing people could agree on was three facts: the wolpertinger is quite small in size, it has a chimeric appearance mixing elements taken from other species, and it is a carnivore. The most famous and widespread description of the wolpertinger presents it as a hare with antlers, wings and fangs – most illustrations of the beast go with this description. However there are many other depictions of the little critter: a horned and winged squirrel, a half-hare half-deer creature with a cockscomb, a chicken with antlers, a mix of a fox and a duck, or a cross between a marten and a pheasant… There are so many different descriptions of the wolpertingers that people started explaining that the race probably started out as the union of opposition species, creating bizarre hybrids, that then found mates among each other – and now each individual is unique, bearing traits of all its ancestors species, randomly organized on its body.

Beyond all this, the only two other facts the storyteller will always be certain of are the wolpertinger’s habitat (the forests and mountains of Bavaria), and its diet: meat… to be more precise human meat. Indeed, part of the joke if warning tourists and travelers that if they wander carelessly and alone in remote and wild areas… they might get attacked by wolpertingers. And the warning usually comes with tales of imprudent tourists who got devoured alive by these little, but ferocious, beasts…

If you are American, the idea of a horned hare will probably bring to mind another name: jackalope, which could be considered another folkloric cousin of the beast.

The dahu in France, the wolpertinger in Germany, the jackalope in Northern America… Other names you might look into are the Swedish Skvader (a half-hare half-bird creature invented in the 20th by a taxidermist out of hunters tall tales), or into the “wild Haggis” (the critter of the Highlands whose flesh is the dish called “haggis”… or at least that’s what joking Scots might tell a particularly naïve tourist). And of course… who could forget the Australian “drop bears”?

Looking back at the data from 3 years, I wanted to honor and reflect on the top 3 fics from each year (2020, 2021, and 2022)! A note for 2022: I am highlighting the fics with the most notes at the current moment. I have fics that I’ve not posted yet and older fics will have an edge up on newer fics simply because of how time works.  

2020

Safety (Namjoon x Reader) 

Summery: You can’t lie to your soulmate. It was a fact that many people knew, including you. You just didn’t expect to find your soulmate during your night shift at the MSN book store you work at. You also didn’t expect them to be the Kim Namjoon, an up-and-coming star.

I think something that struck me about this fic is it was my first time writing a soulmate au. I really enjoyed it and found the story something that I easily fell into. Just as I hope readers were, I found myself rooting for the reader in the climax and anxious with them as the show started! I’ve been meaning to write another soulmate au but I’ve simply not had time yet. Mayhaps next year I will try to!

Midnight Musings (Jungkook x Reader)

Summery: You just moved to Korea for a teaching job and on your first night, you decided to visit a local cafe. You even took a photo to commemorate the move! That photo actually lead to something very unexpected happening though.

Fluff, smut, a touch of angst

One of my first smuts! 2020 was truly a year of exploration for me! I think it was my first year trying mxm and branching out into got7 fics! I must admit, I don’t think I will write smut much more because though I am sex indifferent, the idea of sex really... I don’t enjoy it. It just sort of is something. I laughed all while writing this fic and my other smut. It was a fun experience and I greatly admire all smut writers but it isn’t something for me as a hobby writer.

Slow Mornings (Jungkook x reader)

Honestly. I was shocked by this looking back. I don’t often think of drabbles as stuff that really leads to much but please don’t underestimate the power of drabbles for getting eyes on your blog! It was a fun and short fic and I think it makes me want to get back into doing some drabbles! I’ve been thinking of how I want to start of 2023 and playing around with the idea of a drabble series. Maybe... if you all have drabble requests, I could take those instead!

2020 was truly a year of exploration for me. I had a lot of fun with all the stuff I wrote! It is quite fun to look back and see what range of stuff I did! Interestingly, the notes on these fics haven’t changed tons since I took note of them in 2020 but that’s ok. These stories hold a special place in my heart. Especially safety!

I had a lot of fun writing this piece. I started as half a page free write. Then I made it the length of a full page. Then I wrote it up on a google document and tried to double its length once again. I enjoyed it a ton and writing this piece made me feel quite calm! It was an attempt of mine to spark some creativity and while I found some creativity with writing this piece, I didn’t find much that carried over.

This might’ve been one of my first posted Got7 fics! What are my thoughts on it... 1) I am happy I started writing Got7! I really love them a ton and I am glad that I finally branched out again! I had leaned into BTS after starting to write for Seventeen. 7 is much less than 13 and only recently have I started branching out again! 2) I am... not the biggest fan of this fic. I’ve been open about my struggles with writing in 2021 so it isn’t personal to the event or anything like that... but I was using events to push me to write and while I am glad I wrote this and glad people enjoy it, I do not have a strong bond to it. 

Drawing Blood (Taehyung x Reader)

I uh... remember making the graphic more than I remember writing this fic. TO BE FAIR! I WROTE 24 FICS IN 2021. TO NOT REMEMBER A FEW HAPPENS (plus I think because it was posted on sssc, I didn’t get the notifications of interest and thus had to check it rather than seeing it on my notif bar). That being said, I did have some fun writing this fic and when I look back, I am really curious about the world I was writing in. I think if I could go back and do this fic again, I would. I’d expand on it and add another plot that really highlighted the vampirism rather than just had it be a characteristic. It is 3.8k afterall. I wonder what more depth I could add to it if it became 8k! This fic was a gift for a dear friend of mine, @voiceswithoutlips. Potentially it could be something that I further expand on with Kas’s help!

A year of distance between me and 2021, I still don’t fully know how I feel about the year. There are stuff that I do hold dearly, but I really do think I was nearing or at burnout. I was tired and fried and I think it shows in my writing some. I wasn’t fried for the whole time but I was for a while. I think as well... I hold a lot of guilt for the year. As mentioned a few times on my blog, part of why I took time off from school early 2021 was because of a surgery and mental health struggles... last time I had a major surgery though, my writing surged forth like a protective barrier and this time... it got hurt with me. Again, I had fun and I look back on some of my stuff fondly but I also look back at stuff and wonder “when did I write this??” and I see the hurt and scared person I was. I see how I was struggling to cope and wishing desperately that my writing would be a safe space for me again while somewhere in me, I knew it wasn’t.

I posted this fic before I really started changing my writing habits... or at the very least, I wrote it before that happened. It was hard to write this fic on many layers. I was low motivation and energy, I was recovering from the first inflammation of my nerves, and I was battling the feeling of needing to do more. This fic was a gift to a good friend of mine ( @ditttiii) and I am really glad I managed to write something for her! It’s a fun little drabble!

A Story From a Different Time (Taehyung x Reader)

Summery:  Love. Love is such a wonder. Your love story is especially wondrous to your grandkids who love love as much as you and hang on to every word as you relive the time in your life as a teacher when you met a soft hearted tattoo artist.

This fic was a year in the making! I started it sometime last year (maybe October? Or early November?) and had some bones of it created. That being said, I wasn’t happy with it. Throughout this year, I’ve worked on it bit by bit and tried hard to get it out in time for @taegularities birthday! Seeing it already able to make it to the top three was a shock because it’s only been a month or so (then again, most of my fics this year get like 10 notes or less so...). I am fairly happy with the writing process and how this fic came about! It’s full of tons of references and nods to Rid and I also got to write a fic that passes the Bechdel test this year (if you’ve not heard of it, essentially to pass it you need a woman talking to another woman about something other than a guy)! Having fics that pass the Bechdel test when I have women in my story is something I want to do more of (similarly, I want more representation of disabilities, sexuality, and of people all around the gender... cloud? I know spectrum is commonly used but like... it’s not really a spectrum so idk what to call it otherwise).

Let You Fly (Jimin x Namjoon)

Summery: Namjoon and Jimin have been together for only 7 months and it’s been near perfect. The two fit together wonderfully. All changes when Namjoon’s dream job offer slides itself into his inbox. He’d been eyeing the position in Japan for years… It wouldn’t be fair to Jimin to pack up his bags and join Namjoon, but it wouldn’t be fair to Namjoon to try to force him to stay. Instead, Jimin must let him fly.

THIS FIC! I AM SO HAPPY THAT THIS FIC IS ONE ON THIS LIST! It’s based off of a song (Seven Months by Sunshine State) and I had so much fun writing this fic. This was written shortly after I realized something must change. I was very intentionally working on trying different things and I feel like it really paid off for this fic. I got immersed in it, made a playlist, made a graphic for it, did character interviews, and tried doing a teaser. Most of it’s notes came from BWC’s bookclub and honestly, I am so content with that because it came with people giving me their thoughts on it. It’s a brainchild of mine and I am so honored to have people share their thoughts on it and to have people read it!

It’s not lost on me that all the fics that are on my top 3 for 2022 are ones that were gifts or bookclub fics. Why do I think this is? Well... a multitude of reasons. 1) I posted half as much as I had in 2021 and 2020 (24 and 28 respectively in comparison to the 14 I posted this year). And almost half of what I posted (6 fics) were for my series A Fae’s Brew to Take You Away. Something I started 3/4 years ago and let collect cobwebs for two of those years. It gets less than 10 notes and half of the notes are just nets rebloging. Please know, I am ok with that. I am not complaining. I just want to finish this series. 2) Aside from ASFDT and Heated Blanket, all I wrote was MxM which doesn’t do well on tumblr. 3) I post infrequently. 14 fics is roughly 1 every month. I know I didn’t post that regularly though. And on tumblr, there’s an expectation to churn from readers. It’s social media. You’re rewarded for more posting. 4) I don’t get a lot of traction to my blog. I sit contently at 750 some followers and many of my fics don’t reach the top page (or if they do it’s only for a short time). 

That being said, keeping in mind the few notes and the traction being from other writers reblogging, I am really happy with the stuff that I’ve posted. I finished writing AFBTTYA so hopefully I will be able to edit and get to a point where I am posting something from it every month all next year! In the past few months, the amount I am writing has increased. I am feeling creative with what I am writing! I think that this devopment may take a bit of time to shine through on my blog because with series, I am trying to finish it before I start posting. I am trying to widdle away my 30+ wip list. I am still in school. I still have nerve inflammation. But I think this year has been a year of me trying to better my relationship with my writing. It will take time and I still struggle (just yesterday, after writing 3.5k the day prior, I got anxious about not writing that much again) but I am learning better coping strategies. In some ways, the low notes help because I can really work to untangle my love of writing and want to post from those notes which will hopefully help me keep that boundary if I get higher notes. 

I think I am going into 2023 excited for my writing. It’s refreshing.
