DC Pride 2022:
I didn't particularly like the Damian and Jon story (not in the least because I generally don't get much from the way they're characterised in stories together), but it did crystallise a few things for me about why I find "it's a Pride parade!" stories so unutterably dull.
I'm not going to go into the 'is Pride a riot' debate that I know was everywhere when this issue came out, but I think the thing is...the art never actually LOOKS like a parade to me, as it doesn't hit the right notes.
Where are the Dykes on Bikes at the head of it. Where are the old people who founded this. The history OF the parade is encapsulated in the shape of the parade itself. It's always too young, too sanitised and too twee.
The Nubia and Io story just reminds me I really want to read all the Nubia stuff (I'll get there!)
Connor's story is that awkward line of 'we need you to come out' and 'coming out stories are so formulaic'. Connor, definitely throw that letter in the bin. You absolutely don't actually want to send a letter to your mother about the specific details of what you do and don't want to do with other people physically. The awkwardness in your memory of what you said will never ever go away.
Alysia Yeoh's story is clearly not contemporary (probably mid Batgirl 2016 I think?) because Babs isn't using the Clock Tower when this issue came out. It's...nice. Adult. Slightly tired.
The Jackson Hyde story is cute. I feel it's making Xebel a lot calmer and friendlier than it's usually portrayed but I haven't read enough Aquaman to be definite on that. Hang out with your boyfriend, Jackson!
The Jo Mullein story I need to come back to after I've actually read Far Sector but felt fun.
The Ray Terrill story...is extremely funny if you have actually read Ray and Dinah's 1990s interactions.
What's calculated to make Ray run off to help immediately? Dinah calling for back up!
Dinah. Dinah. Behaving like this is how you had that massive fight with Ollie where he thought you were cheating on him with Ray thirty years ago. (Do it again, it's very funny to me)
Ray: nobody has every shown me affection before Dinah: acts like a human being Ray: dedicates his entire diary to being aimed at Dinah
ANYWAY. Story is fine, the bonus by reading it through a 90s lens is amazing.
The Kate Kane story just being Jacob Kane being proud of Kate made me laugh (I don't actually think you're that supportive, Jacob, but I'm glad you think you are trying to be in your mind). On the other hand it's sweet to frame something through a proud parent.
Tim's story: I laughed realising they'd given this to Travis Moore. They clearly wanted it to be pretty. Nice that they went to Fair Day.
More seriously though: this is very in tune with Tim having other moments of self discovery (To the Father I Never Knew, the first Father's Day with Bruce). Very similar internal monologue.
As I say annually, the Harley/Ivy story is unnecessary. This should be in their own titles.
(Sorry Earth-11, I do not care about you)
And then we get to the only story in the ENTIRE ISSUE with any real grit to it (Kevin Conroy's autobiographical piece) and they slap an advisory warning on the front.
And look, I get why, but also it's so...hmm...we should be able to acknowledge more complicated stories and common narratives without having to warn people. We don't put warnings like that on the front of Lobo (well, aside from the comic being titled 'Lobo'). It should be possible to acknowledge the joys of identity while still reflecting on the past. It's not even anything more than a single slur a bunch of times plus period homophobia and the AIDS crisis. It's not shocking? or surprising? or unexpected?
DC Pride Tim Drake Special #1:
Okay so this is UL reprints plus one new story?
I think the most disappointing thing about the Steph story is that the characterisation doesn't really ring true to any of the characters involved? Steph is allowed to be jealous. Tim's allowed to be avoiding her and shouldn't be getting nagged by everyone to talk to her (especially given the preceding stories and the DC Pride story make it clear Tim and Bernard have been dating for months). It's a cute fantasy but it doesn't feel realistic for the failure points of the personalities of any of the characters involved (Tim, Steph, Conner or Bart), and Cass is once again just used as an adjunct to Steph, rather than someone who has her own independent relationship with Tim.
The art is cute, I even think Tim and Steph did need to clear the air on page, but...it could have used some more grit? Depth? Possibility of things going wrong or people feeling hurt? Less of an ideal fantasy that worked perfectly?
#z canon read throughs#as always what I would actually like to see from a DC Pride special barely appears#(that is queer characters getting to be queer and visible without the most generic 'yay pride!' and coming out narratives)#Come for the Tim story but stay for: Nubia & Io; Alysia Yeoh; Jackson Hyde; and Jo Mullein#which is a better percentage than some others I think

i’m having thoughts about batman vs green arrow, and how the central characters shape the stories their supporting casts are allowed
like, in batman comics, bruce’s story is about being permanently shaped by a grief he can never move on from (his parent’s deaths, and later jason’s death). the premise of batman, bruce’s unyielding dedication to his mission, requires that bruce always be living in the shadow of his formative trauma, always responding to it. structurally, he can never be allowed to heal (because a happy bruce wayne isn’t batman), which means he can’t really grow. his supporting cast can develop and grow in their own right, but they can’t leave (bc they’re batman characters), so they stay stuck in the same unhealthy dynamics with bruce. this creates a narrative paradigm where positive change rarely sticks, cycles aren’t broken, and the easiest story to tell is a tragedy. bruce isn’t allowed a happy ending, so nobody who loves him gets one either.
now compare this with green arrow, where ollie’s stories are so often about having the humility, courage, and determination to take accountability for your mistakes and change for the better. transformative change is his whole deal! it’s the point of the island! and his relationships with his supporting cast reflect this. ollie messes up, he learns from it, and his relationships with other characters develop and improve accordingly. the point of the story is that ollie changes, making change possible for everyone. and so green arrow books present a paradigm where characters are allowed to grow in ways that stick, where harm can be learned from instead of brushed aside, and where happy endings aren’t guaranteed but do largely feel possible. yk?
#is this even anything? idfk#apologies to arrow fans if i’m off base. i’m still pretty early in my ga reading but this is what i’ve gathered so far#this is a pessimistic take on batman but like. my favorite character is dick grayson so can you really blame me?#this is why batman comics accidentally do such a good job depicting the cyclical nature of abuse#bruce isn’t allowed to heal so he keeps hurting his kids in the same ways#and his kids can’t set boundaries that stick bc they have to come back and be his supporting cast again#bam! inescapable toxic family dynamics!#dick’s case is the most tragic to me on a meta-narrative level#because he’s a major character in his own right so he sometimes escapes being bruce’s supporting cast (and thus bruce’s abuse) for a bit#either as nightwing or in titans books#but he was bruce’s sidekick for irl decades and he'll never fully be allowed to break free#dc#bat tag#arrow tag#ollie queen#oliver queen#green arrow#dc meta#mine: dc#not main tagging this with bruce or batman bc that's hitting the hornets nest lets be real.#and anyways this is for ollie fans and my dick grayson tragedy enjoyer mutuals

I don't mean to be rude or offensive, I'm really just curious, are there any m/f ships you really like in mash or other fandoms?
oh that's not offensive in the least. i think what can get grating is when people are rude about "everything being about gay ships all the time" when i've made it pretty clear that there's a lot of gay stuff on my blog and if someone doesn't like it they can avoid me pretty easily.
so, a few things: 1) i'm relatively new to shipping and it doesn't rank high for me amongst things that draw me into a narrative or fandom - i am not dedicated to many ships in general.
2) even if i can logically 'see' a ship, i like to write smut so if i'm not turned on by the idea of these people fucking then i won't have more than a passing interest in them as a ship. i can be into a fic that uses sex to explore a dynamic without being into the sex itself, but it's not where the majority of my time is spent. that said, i've been in this MASH box so long I've produced fic i would've never dreamed of writing when i first started the show. see: infinite monkey theorum for why that might be lol.
in general, i wouldn’t say gender affects what appeals to me in a ship or a character. i like traphawk because of the nature of their relationship, not specifically because theyre both men, although in their case, the two of them being each other’s non trad partners is relevant to the anti-establishmentarian themes of the show. I dont think it would be half as effective, and therefore as impactful on me, if they were a het ship. their joint commitment to being little shits is why i love them so much together.
ANYWAY to actually answer your question: yes
within MASH i'm really into: margaret/trapper, ginger/trapper, almost any threesome with hawk/trap + a lady friend, hawkeye/kyungsoon
passing interest in: trapper/louise, hawkeye/margaret, hawkeye/bigelowe, hawkeye/carlye, klinger/soon lee, frank/margaret, ginger/oliver
highly situational crackships: trapper/carlye, BJ/aggie, hawkeye/kellye, trapper/kellye, hawkeye/peg hunnicutt
other het ships i'm into to varying degrees from very popular fandoms: katara/zuko (atla), rose/nine (dw), ten/martha (dw), ten/rose (dw), roy/riza (fma), batman/wonder woman (dc comics), nightwing/batgirl (dc comics), ollie/dinah (dc comics), rogue/gambit (marvel comics), han/leia (star wars)
... altho now that i think of it, the caveat with most of these is that with the exception of roy/riza, i don't think i endgame ship any of these. i won't not read a fic that implies they're endgame, i just don't think i really "OTP" any of these, I just enjoy them for various reasons.
honourable mention: mulder/scully - have not seen the x-files but i believe in them.

Chapter Two: Understanding
I awakened in the afternoon and dressed in shorts and a collared shirt for the beach. I brushed my teeth and shaved. All the while, I felt listless. Dinah, Ollie, and Hal were dressed already, which made me curious. “Ollie and I are headed into town… Would you like to come with us?” Dinah asked. I smiled and shook my head.
“No thanks… I wanted to get a malt and walk on the beach,” I answered. Dinah smiled and kissed my cheek.
“Do try to be good,” Dinah teased.
I laughed and nodded, but inside I felt so empty. I took my satchel and walked to the nearest ice cream parlor, twenty minutes from the beach house. I sat at the counter, staring at the menu above my head. A woman there stared at me, studying me, and I frowned. “I’ll have a cheeseburger and a malt,” I ordered.
“That’ll be a dollar and twenty-five cents, young fella,” the man at the counter replied.
I nodded with my tongue in my cheek. “I uh… I can’t help but see that the price is steeper than advertised. The cheeseburger is forty cents, the malt’s thirty-five… And the sales tax is what? Eighteen or nineteen cents? At the most, it should’ve been ninety-four cents,” I chuckled. It was my attempt at being friendly and not bashing his head in. I could’ve. I probably should’ve, but I knew how that would’ve ended. He took one look at me and decided to impose an extra tax.
“It’s a convenience fee,” he replied. Prejudiced, but not outwardly so. I shook my head, getting ready to stand up and leave before someone placed a hand on my shoulder.
“I’ll pay for the kid’s meal. And I’ll have the same… So, that’d be a dollar eighty-eight,” Hal replied. I looked up, and he nodded at me. I relaxed my shoulders and raised my eyebrows at the man.
They took their time serving us but eventually brought out two cheeseburgers and malts. We ate in silence and finished our malts before Hal escorted me outside. “I’m heading back,” Hal paused, “What about you?”
“I’m headed to the beach,” I mumbled. Hal disappeared into the fog, leaving me with a foreboding sense of emptiness. The air was cold and crisp as I allowed a force beyond human comprehension to lead me to the shore.
The beach stayed relatively empty, so there were parts left completely empty. I sat with my back against a rock formation, sketching what I saw the other day. Every gruesome detail was etched into my mind, coming to life again in charcoal and graphite. Pages dedicated to close-ups of his mouth. Pink lips stained red, sharp teeth built from rending flesh from bone with little effort. Bare, and unblemished legs, covered in glittering sand. Bloodied hands and fingers, staining his curved—. I puffed out air, panting as I tried to quiet the alarming feelings those images stirred up. I noticed something like a person swimming in the distance, but they weren’t moving. They stayed upright, staring in my direction. I couldn’t look away. I could hear the waves whooshing, almost whispering.
Ocean mist kissed my skin as a mysterious force possessed me. My fingers fumbled against buttons, slipping my arms out of my sleeves while I watched the figure in the ocean. I folded my shirt, placing it atop my satchel and sketchbook. I stood, unfastening my belt, unbuttoning my pants, and shaking as I held onto the waistband of my swim trunks. I kicked my shoes off, stepped out of my pants, and tucked my socks into my shoes. I walked barefoot into something I could only describe as certain death, and the ocean carried me to the dark-haired figure. A wave hit me, immediately pulling me under, and I panicked. I knew I shouldn’t have fought it, but the fear rose inside me, burying all sense of reason. Had someone not fished me out of the ocean, I would’ve died. I quickly lost consciousness. When I came to, I saw someone staring at me. I couldn’t see clearly as I blinked away tears and seawater.
When I reclaimed my senses, I watched a man walk into the water wearing my shirt. He was naked from the waist down and turned around once to look at me. He spared me. Paralyzed with curiosity, I watched as he disappeared into the fog.
I clutched my chest, realizing how close I had come to death twice in a few minutes. I got dressed in my pants and shoes, grabbed my bag, and rushed toward the house. Dinah sat on the porch, having a drink, but I couldn’t stop to greet her. I rushed past Ollie and Hal into my room and grabbed a change of clothes before heading to the bathroom. Ollie knocked, startling me. “Are you alright?” Ollie questioned.
“I’m fine,” I answered. I didn’t come off as sound of mind.
“Leave him be, Ollie—.”
“Was someone bothering you at the beach?” Ollie asked. He wouldn’t leave it alone until I answered.
“No, I thought I’d be sick,” I lied.
“Well, the radio’s in there if you want something to listen to,” Ollie replied. I turned the radio on and bathed. That exchange left a pit in my stomach. Like craving. Like hunger.
I felt weak. I couldn’t tell anyone what I saw because I lacked words to describe the exchange. There was no way to describe it without romanticizing the creature. I didn’t soak for long. I dressed for dinner and dabbed the sweat from my forehead with my sleeve. “Are you feeling better?” Dinah asked. I nodded. She touched my cheek with her hand, her fingertips ice cold against my face. “You’ve been gone for hours. Can you eat?” Hours?
“Mhm, I’m much better,” I answered.
“Good, we’re going into town to eat,” Dinah whispered, “You look haggard…”
“Aww, thanks, Dinah. You sure do know how to make a guy feel good,” I joked. Dinah shook her head and laughed. “Hey, Dinah… You know accents, right?” Dinah shrugged. I repeated what I heard on the beach the other night, and Dinah squinted.
“You met someone Scottish at the beach?” Dinah asked.
I shook my head. “No, I heard him talking, and it caught my attention,” I replied.
Ollie looked at me, squinting, studying my face.
“Feeling alright, Kiddo?” Ollie asked. I nodded.
“Mhm… Were you all waiting for me?” I questioned. Ollie shrugged it off. I slipped my shoes on and grabbed my coat, glancing at my satchel. I looked inside, immediately spiraling into a frenzy. I’d left my sketchbook behind at the beach.
“What’s the matter now?” Ollie asked.
“I left my sketchbook at the beach... I have to—. I have to get it,” I stammered. Ollie opened his mouth to calm me down, but Dinah touched his arm.
“We’ll wait for you,” Dinah replied. She knew whatever he would’ve said would make me feel much worse. I had to get it before someone could see the near-pornographic images I’d drawn of the creature. I’d never be brave enough to retrieve it from someone if they’d seen it.
Hal was sitting on the couch, reading a pamphlet when I passed him. I took my shoes off on the porch and ran barefoot to the beach. The sun had set, leaving the beach in eerie darkness. I walked to the rock formation where I left my things but didn’t reach the rocks before I saw him. He crouched like a gargoyle, holding my sketchbook. My breath caught, and I chewed my lip close to tears. The fear left me, leaving mortal humiliation in its wake. I turned to run, and he looked at me.
“Don’t look at me,” I thought, “Don’t look inside and see me. Don’t worm your way into my spirit.” Then, he did something strange. Something that made me afraid once more. He smiled and waved.
He set my book down, standing erect as he unbuttoned his shirt. His eyes shone amethyst as he morphed into the creature. Scales clothed his loins, shining even in the fog. I waited for him to step away from my things before I grabbed them. To my surprise, my shirt was warm and dry. Then, he nodded as if we’d come to an understanding. I nodded in return.

Introduction Post
Hello, my name is CJ Nightingale, and this is my blog dedicated to my OCs, their story, and the development of said story!! I'm making this blog for the sake of having a designated place to talk about my OCs, and so that I have some people to hold me accountable for actually making story progress, since I've been struggling a bit to actually sit down and make progress on getting the comic going. I think having a blog about it will help me stay motivated. Hopefully. Lol
A little bit of story related information:
This story has over 36 very important characters, not including antagonists and "true" side characters. This story takes place over the course of about 7 or 8 years, in 5 acts, taking the characters from middle school into early college. It's based in what I believe would be described as an "urban fantasy" setting, which looks similar to our world but is quite different. The story is meant to be mostly lighthearted, but there will be very intense moments and emotional damage (and a little blood sometimes too, as there will be fantasy violence).
I will make proper posts describing things in more detail as I go, but for the time being here's a brief introduction to each of the main characters:
Skylar: Acts 1-5, sarcastic, takes no BS, a bit of an enigma, Lukas' twin
Jesse: Acts 1-5, scatterbrained, just out here doing his best
Rin: Acts 1-5, mischievous, enjoys trying new things
Zander: Acts 1-5, smart, unbothered, designated "responsible dude"
Tabitha: Acts 1-5, bubbly, arguably too much faith in humanity
Lukas: Acts 1-5, looks more chill than he actually is, emotionally intelligent (most of the time), Skylar's twin
Lydia: Acts 1-5, too smart for her own good, very good with power tools
Marcus: Acts 1-5, quiet, listens a lot and knows more than he should, arguably drinks too much caffeine
Jules: Acts 2-5, highly approachable and talkative, likes poofy dresses
Dillon: Acts 2-5, skeptical of people, likes roller derby, hates group projects
Takuma: Acts 2-5, Ambitious, sarcastic, has doodled on every piece of clothing they own
Mariah Mae: (Kind of a side character) Acts 2-5, wildly peppy, a bit of a nerd, highly authentic person
Rea: Acts 2-5, perpetually has her head in the clouds, bewildered by humans
Dani: Acts 2-5, highly intuitive, knows all the things, likes music and their service dog
Booker: Acts 2-5, tends to accidentally run his mouth, likes basketball, bass guitar, and his friends
Ollie: Acts (1) 3-5, a little bit reactive, closed off, terrifyingly good at sleight of hand and at lying (do not play poker with him)
Meklit: Acts (1) 3-5, levelheaded, blunt, likes people and dislikes shoes
Gavin: Acts 3-5, both lawyer smart and a bit naïve, cellist, keeps putting himself in situations by accident
Goldie: Acts (1) 3-5, a bit shy, puts a lot of pressure on himself but looks really really chill at all times, chronic doodler
Blake: Acts 1-5, very antsy, very tired, very full of nervous energy, makes some poor decisions
Zaahira: Acts 4-5, genuinely nice person, cares about people, prefers plants
Wulf: Acts (3???) 4-5, impulsive, giggly, just happy to be here, on the run from the government
Akachi: Acts (1) 3-5, extremely ambitious, aesthetically inclined, color coordinated at all times
Selene: Acts 4-5, high tolerance for shenanigans, very bubbly, just out here having a good time
Sakura: Acts 4-5, detail oriented, loves stickers, can borderline read minds/hj
Remi: Acts 4-5 (probably??? gonna have to figure that out a bit more), very smart, very sarcastic, very giggly, very happy to be here
Leah: Acts 1-5, insomniac, a bit pretentious, makes some poor decisions
Sylvi: Acts (1) 3-5, borderline annoying theatre kid in the best way possible, very good singer
Karim: (Arguably a side character) Acts 4-5 (maybe idk), arguably too much faith in humanity, enjoys puns
Jono: Acts (3) 5, loves music, loses his train of thought frequently, looks more nervous than he is
Ivanna: Acts (3) 5, tough, good at water polo, believes in doing the right thing
Sovanna: Acts (3) 4-5, super chill, loves stickers, loves travelling, detail oriented
Ash: Act 5, under a ton of pressure, a bit reactive, out here trying his best
Coral: Act 5, can be hard to talk to, big listener, takes herself very seriously
Sib: (arguably a side character) Act 5, way too much energy at all times, good sense of humor, Ari's twin
Ari: (arguably a side character) Act 5, tired, quiet, talks more to animals than he does people
So that's a brief introduction to the non-antagonist characters, I'll make actual introduction posts for them later, but also if y'all want to ask questions about any of them before I get to that lmk!! Also feel free to ask questions about anything related to this story, I'd be happy to talk about it, and it might motivate me to help get stuff done.
If you found this blog just randomly and not from my fanart page, you can find that at @cj-the-random-artist , and you can find my website which has more art of my OCs at the link down here:
If / when I start uploading this story as a comic, I'll update this post with that information as well. That's all for this long introductory post, and I hope y'all enjoy this long winded thing and enjoy this little blog here!! Have good day lovelies :D
#introduction post#yay here's my long winded post about this OC blog#please ask me about my ocs i need to make stuff for this story so i can get the comic going/hj#peer pressure me y'all lmao (pls don't actually peer pressure me i just need encouragement)

1, 10, 21 and 30 for the ask game!
1. Who's your favorite character and why?
i have many faves! and despite my url today were gonna go with connor hawke, cuz hes the one i feel like explaining
connors introduction at the ashram and through his first arc is a fantastic insight into his character. there is something so fascinating about a man in love with a legacy that ollie hates so much at that moment, and connor's love of the mantle is worth discussing in and of itself. the green arrow is a public figure, and it was through that lens (plus the canonical mythologizing of superheroes) that connor knew his dad. and not simply knew him, but wanted to become like him.
ive talked about it before but the fact that connor is a more natural martial artiat than archer, but still prefers and chooses the bow, is such a profound and interesting character choice. it defines connors dedication, his determination, and his VERY clear ideas about legacy through admiration. again, connor chooses the bow because thats what green arrow uses. he could have easily taken a step aside and become a martial arts vigilante. but he didnt.
connor also has such a fantastic style of deadpan humor that i find really appealing. i like slapstick and witticism as much as the next guy, but connors sense of humor is more fun to me, and i appreciate how theyve made it so distinct without edging into "straight man deals with the weird shit", which i think gets old fast
theres also the fact that connor has so MANY good stories. ive only touched on the surface of some of his character defining traits, but the truth is you could pick up nearly any connor comic and fall in love. were just lucky like that!
10. Share a fave comic panel.
from Firestorm v3. Look. Hes alive (north star symbolism....)
21. Share a favorite piece of comics lore.
Hellblazer writers report meeting John Constantine in real life.
30. What's been a good change to comic books status quo.
mayyyybe predictably because of the first question but the death of hal jordan and oliver queen, and their legacies continuing under kyle rayner and connor hawke was HUGE for comics. not only did it raise the stakes (death can matter again!!) but it allowed for an incredible new exploration of the mantles. kyle and connor were radically different from their predecessors, and seeing them run the show was great

Back to this. I got sidetracked jumping around the spreadsheet and adding some random stuff, but hopefully I should hit the first Renee appearances tomorrow. I also have to track down a version of Death in the Family that has the foreword - it's by Tot and mentions Vic, and was mentioned in the letter column for 28, so it should fit somewhere in this chunk of issues on the spreadsheet.
Question #18
Here he is! I love Ollie and Vic's dynamic. They are so fascinating and so annoying.
You know you've fucked up when Ollie's calling you a dumbass.
I like how much breathing room this issue has. They get a lot of space to talk and highlight each other, which is a great foundation for the later GA crossovers.
Of the unsubtle 80s anti-gun GA stuff I've read (which isn't a lot but it's more than 0) this is one of the less interesting bits. At least it's short.
The panel composition on this issue is really well done. Making two guys talking in a truck into a pair of pages that make me pause to take them in is impressive.
#19
Vic choosing to get the doll fixed is a really strong moment.
Overall, the way Augie is treated is surprisingly good? It's definitely played for creepiness at first, but he's just a guy living a surprisingly decent life for Hub City, Vic tries to actually help him and doesn't judge him for being delusional, and he ends up totally fine.
The parallel between Vic's mask and Myra's makeup, and her choice to discard it, is just. Waugh. She's just as dedicated to trying to figure out the right thing as he is, but she's not hiding any of it!
Myra kissing Maurice is still a very weird moment.
Detective Comics - Fables part 1
Spectacularly terrible opening, 0/10.
It's so weird to see the Penguin after this long of a stretch without supervillains. Yeah Talia shows up first but she's way less gimmicky and the page is pretty calm. He's here in full force with the monocle and bird jokes.
Shiva <333
I don't believe for a fucking second that asking Vic is the best way Shiva can think of to find Batman. I really like it, don't get me wrong. Vic's hacker exposition about making a post on the internet is hilarious, calling Batman Pointy-Ears is hilarious, "Matins" is such a Catholicism Moment, it's good stuff. I just think this is way less likely to work than going to Gotham and punching cops until Batman shows up.
Oh my god this is such a stupid villain plot. What do you mean it doesn't affect people with high testosterone. What do you mean Bruce already knows what it is. Why does Ra's have that. Why would that be the effect you choose for this story.
I'm sure this Bruce and Talia plot is better when read in context but it's still some excellent drama. Love them.
...gender?
Green Arrow - Fables part 2
The overarching plot of Fables isn't good, the O-Sensei is a boring Orientalist stereotype, but all of the subplots are very strong examples of why I care about each series. Scrap the whole O-Sensei thing in the first two issues and just have it be Shiva picking fights and finding people to help someone she knows and it'd be better.
Dinahollie <3
I love getting to see Shiva doing her thing. She's so chill, it's fun to see her in her element :)
Dinahshiva <3
Shiva loves to put some weird little freak in a situation and see if it makes them better or worse, and it sucks she doesn't get to do that anymore.
Question - Fables part 3
All of these issues have great looks for Shiva. Style icon.
Hey, Vic's terrible secret identity came back to bite him!
"Van der Waal's equation" isn't complete technobabble - the Van der Waal's force is a decent explanation for a multi-use adhesive, at least by comic book standards, and would explain why the mask never seems "sticky" and why the chemistry on getting it to stay is so finicky.
It's interesting that Vic doesn't even try to get Shiva to not kill people. He might be self-sacrificing, but he's not that dumb.
Oh my god Bruce you are such a dramatic bitch.
I kinda see what they were going for with the O-Sensei here, at least. Still think it'd be better if he wasn't a ridiculous legendary fighter.
Drowning motif! Shiva's perspective is so interesting - she's able to do anything she puts the effort into, and she expects that to be true of everyone else.
#20
The cover layout is unique this issue, which is a neat touch.
I always like that characters get to say stuff that's sort of dumb. Vic no-selling Myra's joke about boomerang rocks is a nice reminder that they do really like and feel comfortable around each other, even when things are rough.
Honestly not a ton to say about this issue. It makes its point well, I like it.
In the letter pages: the return of Hair Discourse.
#21
This plotline's back!
He just like me fr (misreading signals on a date, resisting the urge to deck his high school classmates)
Seriously though, it's nice to get a look into Vic's very normal problems. Not everything wrong with him is related to being the Question.
This is one of my favourite single issues. I can't quite put words on why - everything about it just works, and there's nothing about it that I want to pick at.
#22
Election Day is the best arc in the run.
The opening spread is full of excellent expressions - Wesley's really lean into the more distorted and exaggerated end of Cowan's art, while Myra's are all subtle, exhausted frustration. I appreciate that she's consistently drawn with sunken cheeks and eye bags.
Maurice getting to be serious is a strong moment. He's been a good source of banter for Myra before this, so having him get invested and take the consequences seriously is a good way to ground the stakes, and to give Myra someone who's genuinely on her side without having to rely on Vic.
It's interesting that Shiva pays close enough attention to what Vic's up to on a regular basis that she'd know who to send. Even when she's not around, she still gets to drive the story.
#23
This issue got me the first time I read it. The history flashback is a weird choice, but it sets the tone perfectly, and the time constantly being shown is a throwback to the first issue that makes it feel super tense. So much of the series has long time skips, waiting to heal or get phone calls or for anything to happen, but now every minute counts. The news reports punctuating it work so well.
Vic dropping everything when he reads Tot's name is so...
Myra goes off, and she damn well deserves it. The difference in how her expressions feel between this and the opening of #22 is a testament to Cowan's work.
The quoting of a line from five pages ago is maybe a little unnecessary. These panels would stand perfectly well on their own.
#24
It's hard to make a deus ex machina feel "earned", but if anything does, it's this.
Kind of a dumb thing but who tells this story with a beaver? I'm not losing it, right, it's the Scorpion and the Frog?
The historical flashback turning out in Myra's favor is a fantastic bit of subversion. When I first read this, I was certain that Wesley was going to shoot Myra during the blackout, and Dinsmore dying and Myra talking about how bad winning felt made me lower my guard and think he might kill himself publicly instead. Funny how that works.
I didn't catch what he meant until the next issue on my first read (in my defence, I'm not American) but wow Wesley's not subtle about his assassination plans to anyone. I mean, I caught that much, but he's really not subtle.
Myra and Vic's relationship makes me want to explode. I just want them to be happy together! Aaaaa!
#25
Everything happens so much. The pace just does not let up.
Vic falls into bad habits, again, but he does a better job staying focused and not letting the anger take over - it's good development.
Wesley's death is everything the shitty racist cop issue fails to be. He's a sad, awful little man with a broken moral compass and a lot of enablers, and he dies refusing to recognize it.
The letters column: a woman wrote in a while back about how male comic fans are creeps and Vic still has some personal growth to do when it comes to being less sexist, and some men are being freaks about it. These fuckers haven't changed in thirty years.
#26
If I ignore the part of my brain that hates this as a Riddler story and pretend he's an OC, it's a fine breather issue. Unfortunately I am bad at doing that.
Some very caricature-y guest art this issue. It's a neat look in some panels, and sometimes it's more subtle, but a lot of it is scrungled enough that I can't take what's happening seriously.
this is Vic and Tot in the car, to me
Love that Tot takes stopping Vic from self-destructing into his own hands, and that Vic bitches but doesn't do anything stupid to try and stop him.
The idea of Vic chewing out the Riddler with more difficult questions is an interesting idea, but I don't love the effect of him monologuing about a bunch of pretty standard ~deep~ questions and well known koans, and the Riddler just going "yeah i'm afraid of those" is dumb.
I dunno - it feels like a bit of a waste for the one time Vic faces an established villain to be so meh. I like Sphinx, at least, and the reappearance of the drowning motif is cool.
#27
The weirdest issue, I think.
I really like all the Vic sections, and I'm not opposed to meta shit, but this is pretty jarring. Tot's weird cousin and his racist magic is not helping the tone of the Ditko callback.
I like that Tot has a weird cousin who was a bad comic artist. He has connections outside of Vic, they're just also weird as hell.
The Ditko callback is great. "You gotta pull me up." "Why?", and then the slow drop before Vic grabs him? Mwah. Perfect. I'm a sucker for this shit. Even when he's falling into bad habits, he's still a better person than he used to be!
#28
Shiva :)
Vic responding to Tot telling him not to lie to himself by suddenly gaining sunglasses kills the mood a bit, but it's also very good. What is wrong with him.
Myra wakes up from a coma, ditches the hospital, and immediately makes a very risky plan. Good for her.
Everyone's in top form this issue, it's great.

au in which bitty (through a series of fortunate and unfortunate events) is the president of the frat that lives next door to the haus and he gets so sick of how unkempt the haus' lawn is, that he takes his lawnmower and in the dead of night mows the words "mow your fucking grass" into the lawn. jack, the hockey team's chosen and unwilling representative, goes over to try and mediate with bitty ("we don't have a lawnmower, so, uh, we just can't cut the grass"), but the only result is that the pie that bitty serves him whilst they're having this argument discussion has the words "buy a fucking lawnmower then" cut into the crust.
jack is blown away by a) how cute this frat president is and b) the sheer dedication and decides to do something similar in return (but only after buying a lawnmower and actually cutting the haus' grass). he figures out when bitty's figure skating practice is and goes out immediately after the zamboni to skate the words "we bought the fucking mower" into the ice.
later that afternoon bitty comes over to the haus with a pie, albeit with no message baked into it this time, and apologies for the passive-aggressiveness. and jack, being the occasionally smooth fucker he is, says "well, you could make up for it with a date"

Relationship Rant- Dinah Lance
I'm gonna talk about one of the most endearing relationships in DC: Roy Harper and Dinah Lance.
As I've mentioned in other posts, I dislike the idea of Dinah as the "Arrowmum", I think it's a disservice to her character and, generally speaking, when fandom applies the title of "mother" to a female character it tends to reduce them down to that (as I've seen a lot of posts doing with Selina Kyle). That being said, there's something undeniably mother/son coded about Dinah and Roy's relationship, in the sense of mutual care and respect.
As far as I can tell, the first instance in which Dinah and Roy were seem interacting at length is in Snowbirds Don't Fly part 2 (Green Lantern/Green Arrow #86), and Arsenal #1 further backs this up by saying Dinah didn't even know Roy's civilian name until that comic.
This sets the tone for their entire relationship, as Dinah's literal introduction to Roy is when he's at his lowest. A lot of other people in Roy's life, particularly Ollie, had already known him extensively pre-Snowbirds; they had memories who they could look back on as "before it all went wrong with Roy." Dinah, however, doesn't have that. There's no pre-addiction Roy she can look back on, no fabricated "better" version she can judge the later Roy based on those standards. Everything she's seen of Roy has been improvement- she's seen him at his lowest, and seen him fight to improve and better himself as the years progressed, even stating that she views him as the bravest person she's ever met.
But that isn't to say their dynamic is exclusively Dinah comforting him. Their relationship is built on mutual care and affection, supporting each other, such as after Ollie died.
At that point, they're really the only two people they can speak to about their grief. I believe Hal's dead at this point, or at the very least he's Parallax, and Connor had only been in Ollie's life briefly prior to Ollie's death. Dinah and Roy are the two people who truly knew Ollie, and are alive to talk about it, at this point in time, and as a result they are each others mutual source of comfort.
They also just have a good relationship in general. They're able to joke around together, and they can talk to each other easily-
-and it's so clear to see their chemistry with one another.
When Roy later joins the Justice League, Dinah's one of his biggest supporters, even before his official initiation-
-showing just how much she respects Roy and believes he can do well. (From Green Arrow (2001) #74) Dinah's seen Roy as the competent hero he is, and knows that with his skillset and sense of morality he is far better fit amongst the greatest heroes of Earth compared to the controversial, underdog team Outsiders (which, while I adore the 2003 Outsiders cast, is a good point. Roy was seen routinely unhappy in that team, and the Justice League was one of his biggest dreams). Upon his actual induction into the League, Dinah's the one Roy dedicates his success to-
-demonstrating just how much he appreciates her and her constant support (From Justice League of America (2006) #7), and she's the one who reassures him that he does deserve the title of Red Arrow upon him joining the League and feeling anxous about it.
And in Vixen: Return of the Lion, when Dinah is compromised, you can see Roy's panic and concern for her wellbeing-
-demonstrating just how much he cares for her. Dinah's arguably one of the only people who loves Roy the same way he loves everyone in his life- unconditionally, and without judgement or grudges- and so the concept of losing that person to which his type of love is reciprocated is understandably terrifying.
Overall, Roy and Dinah are one of DCs most endearing relationships that has so many layers- a mother/son dynamic, a mutual support system, and best friends.
#oh and also they make me insane#tumblr photo limit can't stop me when I make COLLAGES#roy harper#arsenal#red arrow#speedy#dinah lance#black canary#rant week

Ollie and Kon for the ask game
Ollie
What made me like them in the first place
Tbh I don’t remember but I think it might have been his sheer dad energy
Who I ship them with
Hal and Dinah….and also kind of Eddie just because I think it’s funny
Random headcanon I have about them
Ollie whistles the song from Disney’s Robin Hood all the time. Drives his family nuts
My favorite moment of theirs
Only one?? Uh…chili is God’s perfect food. Or any time he hugs his kids. Or making gay marriage legal as his first act as mayor. THERES TOO MANY
Plotline/story I want to happen
I just want him to be treated well again and to be an actual shouty leftist again
Any issues or insecurities I think they have
SO MANY HES SO INSECURE but mostly I think he just has a timer counting down to when he’s going to disappoint everyone that they’ll abandon him
Favorite quote
Once again. God’s perfect food
Kiss, marry, hug, or kill
Hug. I think it would fix me
Random thing that reminds me of them
Cabled sweaters
Any talents I think they might have
I think he can sing really well
On a rate from 1 to 10 how much I love them
10
What I think about their family
Love them. They’re all great
Who I think should be their bff
Eddie. Uh tbh I personally can’t think of anyone he gets along with other than Hal and Dinah and I ship them so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
What animal they would be
Honestly a fox. They’re both clever and fixes can also scream so they have the loud factor. And the Robin Hood reference is right there too
Three songs that remind me of them
Land of the Free by the Killers
Welcome to the Black Parade by MCR
Archers by the Ballroom Theives
Favorite episode/issue/thing centered around them
Grell run. I’ve heard good things about JLU but I need to watch it
How badly they need hugs
1000000000/10. He needs hugs always
Favorite thing about their personality
He’s an asshole (affectionate)
Favorite thing about their appearance
The goatee. It would look dumb on anyone else but it’s Ollie’s source of personality
Why I love them so much
We are very similar in a lot of ways but also in some ways he’s who I want to be. Also he’s dad
Kon
My boy!! I don’t talk about him enough! This is specifically about 90s Kon. I don’t acknowledge t shirt Conner
What made me like them in the first place
I actually first saw Kon in the animated Young Justice cartoon and I latched onto him like a baby duck as soon as he came on screen. @thequiver can verify. There really wasn’t a reason, I just went “that one” and it stuck. Then I read his comics and it got even worse
Who I ship them with
No one. Kon dates a lot in his solo comics and there’s a lot I could say about it but pretty much they’re not good relationships. So I’d really rather see Kon be single and become more comfortable with himself than see him in a romantic relationship
Random headcanon I have about them
He has Lex’s eyes, so he wears the sunglasses to cover them because he’s insecure about it.
My favorite moment of theirs
This is a good one I have saved
But I also just love every moment he’s on page so. All of them?
Plotline/story I want to happen
I want 90s Kon and Jon and Chris sibling bonding
Any issues or insecurities I think they have
Kon also has a lot of them, mostly centered around living up to the Super name and being related to Lex.
Favorite quote
The scene from YJ98 where he gives the quote from Peter Pan about dying being a great adventure hits hard. It’s not technically a quote from him but it so quickly shows you how much of his personality is a front
Kiss, marry, hug, or kill
Hug and kiss on the forehead
Random thing that reminds me of them
Sunglasses, undercuts, red pants
Any talents I think they might have
Can quote any Buddy the Vampire Slayer episode at the drop of a hat. 90% of his brain space is dedicated to TV from the 90s. I also think he’s pretty good at geography
On a rate from 1 to 10 how much I love them
Also a 10
What I think about their family
The Supers? Fantastic, love them. Lex sucks and so does Dabney, though Dabney can occasionally be funny
Who I think should be their bff
Literally all of Young Justice. I love they.
What animal they would be
Dog. Im trying to think of a specific breed and I’m blanking rn. But something fluffy and eager to please but also able to be scary
Three songs that remind me of them
I Don’t Care by FOB
Some Nights by fun.
Numb by Linkin Park
I have a playlist for him here if you’re interested
Favorite episode/issue/thing centered around them
The Reign of the Supermen movie. It’s one of my comfort movies
How badly they need hugs
So, so badly. Let me hug him, DC. Please.
Favorite thing about their personality
He’s funny!
Favorite thing about their appearance
Uh everything? I have a lot of gender envy for him and am trying to put together a cosplay for him
Why I love them so much
Idk, he just hits the right buttons. I like his personality and his look. He blorbo shaped
Game here

u can ignore this if u dont want discoursers @ing u but i just had to yell bc im losing it @the connor section of the pride thing. SO much worse than anything i couldve imaigened. imagine being sandra hawke and getting that letter from ur seemingly teenage son. "hi mom how are u btw ive decided i dont want to fuck anyone" like WHAT? cannot believe that actually got published an im seeing nothing but ppl positively freaking out abt it. ppl acting like its rep on par w actual gay characters. nutty
NO PLEASE LET'S TALK. IT WAS DISGRACEFUL. IT WAS RIDICULOUS.
the story completely ignores the fact that connor has been gaycoded since his very first appearance, it ignores his history with the men (eddie fyers, master jansen, his grandfather) who were father figures to him when ollie was pretending he doesn't exist/dead, it ignores the particulars of connor's relationship with his mother and the fact that they just don't share that kinda bond... but hey, that's been talked to death. by me. by other people, i'm sure. instead, i'll say we know the very act of making connor asexual is an act of homophobia but we should get into just how far that goes.
first and foremost:
at this rate, there's no beating the inherent infantilization of characters of colour allegations. and certainly not between connor being aged down and greatest hits such as "i want to tell someone about my awesome day and eat ice cream".
but the real showstopper here is these fantastic words being put over panels of a character created specifically for one of the single most recognisable out gay men in pop culture:
let me put it this way: there's no music meister in comics, he did not exist before neil patrick harris -- a gay man -- voiced him in the brave & the bold cartoon and even meister's origin frames him a certain way ("bullies used to pick on me because i sang in choir/but something very strange occurred when i kept singing higher," he sings in his debut episode). there's also no inherent sexual or romantic element to meister's gimmick, merely an ability to control people through music
and yet, in the press release from hell that preceded this story, the writer notably called music meister the 'perfect villain' for connor. why is that? what are we meant to understand here? arguably, someone along the lines of poison ivy would be more appropriate here (connor's lack of sexual attraction would save the day etc, you get the picture). in the pride special, meister doesn't have a single line of dialogue, there's not a single thing about him that makes him an especially necessary piece of the story or irreplaceable in any way... except for the fact that he's associated with a gay man by default, except for the fact that the narrative seems dedicated to showing gay people as capable of oppressing asexual people (whose silence is an 'aberration' and is 'ruining our chorus', right?).
not to mention, the absolutely insane phrasing of sex involving "sharing" your body with someone but that's a whole other conversation and all i've got to say on it for now is that it makes the author sound wildly christian lmao.
point being, homophobia won and everyone celebrating connor's story is undeniably a homophobe.

Review of Green Arrow: Stranded (2022)
11/10, would recommend to any Green Arrow fan. I absolutely loved it.
A more detailed review that includes spoilers under the cut!
Alright, here we go! I'm going to be tackling the story first and the art second because both deserve praise.
First things first, I absolutely LOVED that Deneen opened right off the back on the dedication page by showing that he's a longtime DC fan, and paying homage to Mike Grell- it make me feel more secure in the kind of characterization we were going to see, and got me really excited to see where he was going with a young Oliver Queen. And I was NOT disappointed. His characterization of Ollie is probably the best we've gotten in the last 20 years without a doubt- you could really see the makings of our beloved curmudgeon in this thirteen year old- it felt like Ollie again.
Deneen manages a really masterful blend of Rebirth canon and Preboot Canon Queen family dynamics and I think that it's safe to say that with the exception of the island happening when Ollie's thirteen rather than as a young adult, this comic would fit right in with canon stories. It was beautifully structured, expertly split into chapters in a way that didn't segment the story unnaturally, and it felt like I was reading 6 comic issues bound together rather than a volume.
As someone who works with kids, Ollie was an extremely believable thirteen year old, he was just the right amount of independent and seeking validation- and his emotional push and pull with his father? Was EXCELLENT. It's the kind of dynamic we saw hinted at in GA: Rebirth but with Robert Queen being given an actual personality and chance to appear on page. Tyler and Sebastian felt like stand-ins for the Merlyns, which makes sense, given that the canon we've been given for the Merlyns relationship with Oliver Queen would be extremely difficult to portray in a novel for kids and also fitting that narrative into the island narrative would be packing it with too much trauma.
I'm always a fan of Ollie's compassion being highlighted, his acknowledgement that taking a life any life is a burden that shouldn't be handled lightly. Deneen gave us what felt like an homage to the "Safari" death of Ollie's parents from preboot canon mixed with the well known and often discussed grief Ollie feels over the rabbit he accidentally killed while learning to shoot in the way he approaches Ollie's archery skills and his development as a hunter in this comic. On that note too, the shifting between the hunting safari and the island are fantastic- the parallels and anxieties are displayed in a realistic and easy to digest way that's perfect for young readers.
Ollie, talking about the pizza place in Seattle that treats him like anyone else was just so Ollie. It so clearly and easily exemplifies his consistent desire to just be Ollie, and is just one of those instances of the Green Arrow ethos of the importance of being "just a guy."
I am also obsessed with Ollie spelling out "alive" rather than "help" in the driftwood that he sets ablaze at the end to call for help. Something about that was just so Oliver Queen. The focus on living, the determination to look at the unknown and uncertainty found in needed help and to say "I'm here, I'm alive, I am going to show strength regardless of the uncertainty of my situation," was just... so Ollie. I loved it. Seared into my memory forever now.
Onto the art- I need the island to be illustrated like this always now. Hosalla's art style is able to show the island as something beautiful and untamed and dangerous, while still plainly showing the trauma of the situation. It toes the line between serene and horrifying which is exactly what the island should be, it is both an escape, a place where Oliver Queen can just be Ollie, where he's unburdened by the pressures of his life back home- but it's also a crucible that fashions him into the man he'll become. And her art is just a brilliant display of both beauty and pain.
I also really really love the way she portrays Ollie. He looks like a thirteen year old boy, he's not just a smaller version of a grown man without a beard. He looks like a young boy who's still growing into his features, who's maturing still, has baby fat still. And it's this depiction that helps drive home the kind of innocence and unfairness that Dendeen is trying to make apparent in his writing- the art reflects the text of the story beautifully. Ollie's facial features are distinctive, and his expressions are fantastic, I love the way that the pupils of the eyes she draws are just as expressive as the line of the mouth. And I could talk forever about the way that Ollie's face switches between fear and determination, the subtle shift in the panel between just drives the scene, and brings the text to life in a way that makes it feel dynamic.
The art is what truly brings this comic to the level it's at- the writing is incredible, but the art is what elevates it to the being such an incredible Green Arrow comic. The use of color and contrast, the facial expressions convey tone in a way that text alone can't. It's an incredible comic, and an absolutely beautiful example of what the medium can be when artists and writers of equal skill are paired together.
I truly cannot recommend this comic enough. I will be thinking about this for months at absolute minimum.

The idea that any one group of fans that came to love a character from a specific canon as a starting point are quote un quote the worst is just generalization and gatekeeping. There are bad fans in all camps and often the issue is more people not being willing to engage with other interpretations of a fictional character. Or fans being upset new people don't have the same experience and punishing them for being new. There is the same love and dedication and protection in all Roy fans. When all you do is complain of course or see things you dislike that mean a lot to others of course you won't have a good time. Just work with fans and do more 'yes and' or give them ideas for aus. Some fans think Jason and Roy wouldn't naturally get along but if you frame that as 'there should be more enemies to lovers' fic and not for example 'I can't stand how these fans make these to characters friends' you will get content you like and have a good time.
---
I'm sorry, I know you're trying to be helpful, but I think you missed the point of my previous posts - it's not that I dislike Jason and Roy, I dislike Jason and Roy when writers completely rewrite Roy so he can fit into the role of Jason's sidekick. Because the real, hero-almost-as-long-as-Dick, father-to-a-five-year-old, founder and occasional leader of the ntt and Outsiders and multiple time member of the JL, wouldn't fit into the new Jason & Roy stories. So they erase 50 years worth of history for a comic as bad as the Outlaws?? What kind of Roy fan would be happy with that?
RHATO does the same to Kori, so Jason's the only character who actually benefits from it, hence the criticism of RHATO Jason.
As for what you said about suggesting something else, the gist of my post was 'there should be more Roy fics that take into account his actual history and canon relationships'. I think you missed my point a bit: I only criticised Jason so far as the Outlaws being the reason for Roy's plummet into stupidity.
The Rebirth Outlaws for example don't have the same problem - Bizzaro and Artemis are newer characters. Lobell didn't rewrite over 50 years of comics over hundreds of issues in a few short recons. Or turn the only female character into a hot amnesiac into free sex who couldn't remember 6/7 year long friendships because her kind forget fast??
Lobell went out of his way to shit on the Titans, and that's not something I particularly enjoy? Plus, it was really dumb? Like, Dick and Jason met fighting over a bed?? And the Titans kicked Roy out for being an ALCOHOLIC??
1. Addictions aren't just substitutable!
2. You mean the same titans who helped him get clean and take care of his kid? Every other comic had either Dinah or Dick or Hal (I think?) be the ones who got/forced Roy into Rehab. Not Killer Croc of all people!?
3. Ollie really wasn't anywhere as bad as he was portrayed?? Like, yes, he kicked Roy out when he found out about his addiction, but he went after him and apologised by the end of the same arc?? And he acknowledged what he did wrong and that it would take Roy time to forgive him. And Roy was allowed to take time to do so. And he did! Over the years, Ollie kept trying and Roy forgave him! Also, Ollie never treated Roy as a disposable soldier! Neither did Silver!Bruce actually, but that's a whole other story.
I don't think it's possible for me to engage with ANY RHATO interpretation of Roy or Kori and most other older fans I know say the same.
Also, how many people come away from RHATO as Roy or Kori fans? I can't imagine it's a large segment. And if they were, I'm assuming they'd read literally anything else that features them and realise how much better it is.
Sorry for the rant, but please feel free to message me if you have any questions.
