Declivity [Act One]
[Rating: M, Genre: New Adult Fantasy]
In the late morning, the courtyards were quiet. Various advisors had already taken their morning tea, and it was still too early for serving lunch in the garden; Eris found it to be the perfect time to meditate among flowers. They had a favorite courtyard, connected to the walkways along the cliffside and facing the sea– and as they approached, the familiar curl of Caesian rose between rows of late-blooming flowers. It was idle chat between gardeners; but it caused the seer to turn on their heels and find a different space.
A gardener or attendant would have not bothered them, but every whisper carried news of the vessel taken from their temple. Everyone in the palace must have heard by then; and Eris wished for nothing more than to find peace.
Tranquility greeted them in the form of clean hedges and blooming flowers, wrapped along the crafted figures in the garden. No others roamed between the statues, nor sat on benches which circled a small pool centered in the courtyard. Eris descended into the space, noticing the fresh cuts of vines and level outline of leaves; it had been tended already.
The only voices that passed them was the distant chatting of guards or advisors as they strolled through the open archways of the palace; but with the walkways slightly raised upon stone, they were unclear. Eris preferred the fleeting call of birds and rustle of thin trees to the muffled gossip of residents regardless– the songs were always pleasant and cheerful, removed from duty and free of the tall, imposing walls of the palace.
As the vessel circled the courtyard, they wondered how long it had been since their last visit to the memorial garden. They thought they could remember different flowers crawling up the defined forms of royals passed and the warmer embrace of the sun, but they supposed they could have been mistaken. Even in a different season, they visited sparingly.
Splashing interrupted their reminiscing. Eris turned their gaze to a statue in the corner of the garden and felt their stomach lurch. Bathing in a marble basin held by delicately carved hands, a bird chirped and fluttered. The still rainwater lapped and splashed against the slim torso and carved jewelry stretched across the statue’s abdomen, staining the stone in spots to be wiped clean by the sun. Eris held their breath, letting their eyes wander where they knew they did not wish to; taking in the face of the divine form. The round curve of the figure’s cheek and tumbling hair curled as their own, the peaceful expression drawing beauty from each grain within the pale rock– they stared at the reflection of their features, catching on the unique curve of her nose. Hauntingly similar, yet imperfectly mirroring their presence.
Flapping messily away to perch in a nearby tree, the bird left their mother’s arms.
Eris could find no words to offer. In a few days' time, followers would leave countless bundles of flowers and affection for her in the name of Time. Taken so soon, they would mourn. A prodigy of a prophet, wise and favored by Time themself, the vessel that brought divinity to the palace. She would be honored as all vessels were upon their deity’s waning season; yet in the quiet of ending days, she was left in peace.
Hesitantly, Eris stepped up to pluck a drifting flower that had begun to rot in the basin she held. The limp tendrils of the lily dragged as they pulled it from the surface, laying it in their palm. Thin, scarlet petals were unlike any surrounding the statues; yet it had been waiting there, to be found cradled in the arms of divine past. They retreated as fast as they approached, laying the dripping petals into the grass and pulling their hand back to their cloak. Their misted eyes searched her face once more for words to say.
Had she been interrupted from her visions, as they were? Had she been good enough for Time?
Her prophecies were recalled as wonderfully interpreted, prodigy and unflawed until her downfall. Eris knew the heaviness in the follower’s eyes when they saw their similarities hidden beneath their veil. They turned away, and as they meditated, they did not face her again.

Whilst skirting the declivity of these rocks, lost under the water, I still saw some shells, serpulae, and spinorbis, still living, and some specimens of asteriads.

Pónganse a estudiar.
