so tired. i play the sims like once every blue moon mainly to build stuff, and looking for inspo pics - especially on pinterest - became nigh impossible because of the ai slog that keeps getting uploaded there by peabrained techbros. like 70% of results from searches are infested with those illogical, physically impossible, shitty looking images. today i needed to find some reference pics of sci-fi spaceship bridges for the artwork im working on and, once again, everything is just artificially generated trash

and its not good and never will be because those ai engines techdudes get their dicks wet over simply cannot comprehend things like perspective, or basic composition - its a fucking program that bases its results on a bunch of ones and zeros and gets to the answer in the most straightforward way possible, making a shitton of mistakes anyone can spot easily

and on one hand its annoying as fuck and i roll my eyes so hard i can almost see god when i spot yet another piece of shit ai image in the wild, but i am also filled with this grim satisfaction, waiting for this whole thing to fall apart. cause it will. the more ai images get shit out into the world wide web, the more ai programs which scour websites add those already artificially generated bullshit into their databases, the more it becomes obvious what is and isnt gen ai. same mistakes get made, same words and phrases get used in essays. its a beautiful cycle of artificial intelligence cannibalising itself ouroboros style, and im patiently waiting until there are only ashes of anime waifus with three boobs and two fingers too many left

in the meantime, what can we actually do to find good references? simple, truly - follow real fucking creators. look at their portfolios, personal websites. there are a ton of folks putting out pose packs for you to use, even completely for free. you can try posing yourself! put your phone in a position you want the perspective of the pose to be in, start recording a video and just do a few poses - references like that are honestly even better than still images you can find online. look through sites like artstation for concept artists who do background work, 3d art etc and get inspired by those folks. maybe purchase artbooks that might interest you, if youve got the money for it. hell, find creators on youtube who actually do things that youre interested in drawing, be it archery poses, or hairstyles, watch and study their videos!

sites like pinterest are convinent, thats true, but at this point in time they become more and more unreliable. find creators you can trust, follow them, study from them. we have to support one another. decentralize your own online experience

I had been hoping for a good alternative to the Amazon-owned Goodreads for a while but what I had tried didn't work because it only supported English-language books. But finally! I saw people on Mastodon talking about BookWyrm, a decentralized not-for-profit open source website that's very similar to Goodreads.

Some things I love so far:

You can import all your data from Goodreads (or other similar websites) so you don't have to manually add everything again.

It's available in multiple languages, including my language Catalan (which is often ignored in international websites) and everyone can contribute to make it available in their language by helping translate it.

It has all the same good things that Goodreads has, including shelves, lists, star ratings, written reviews (you can hide the part with spoilers), groups, bar code scanning, you can add multiple reading dates for one book, quotes sharing, an activity dashboard to see what the people you follow are posting, and a discover tab.

It's not owned by Amazon!

Your data is not being sold to anyone.

There are no ads, it's not for profit.

Books who have free ebook versions (like old classic books, for example), on their BookWyrm page there's a link to where you can download the ebook for free. Instead of Goodreads which links you to the Amazon buy page.

It's very easy and quick to add missing information of a book (unlike Goodreads, where only a few people can do it).

I saw a man on Mastodon say he has downloaded my country's public libraries' local books database and updated to his BookWyrm server, so people who know how to can quickly add many books.

Things I don't like so far:

It doesn't have an app. I've been using the browser from my phone and it works well though, but apps are more comfortable.

It doesn't have all books - though tbf neither does Goodreads, I've asked Goodreads librarians to add books before. Here I can add them myself, which is faster than having to ask and provide the info for them to copy-paste (a waste of time for two people), but there's more books missing for now. That's normal and only a matter of time, it's not a huge inconvenience tbh, but it takes more time and it's not as comfortable.

There's few people so far, so there aren't many reviews.

Hello Reptiblr,

I am creating a searchable database of all reptile morphs that have some type of medical issue associated with them. Birth defects, an increased rate of a specific issue happening, neurological problems, skeletal deformities; you name it and I want to document it. The problem is; the reptile community is very decentralized and information is hard to find. This is especially true for newer/less well known morph projects and morphs that are not stateside.

Right now: I have already got the more common issues like the base spider ball python, enigma morph leopard gecko, lemon frost leopard gecko, and sunkissed corn snake. Cinnamon ball python and super black pastel have also been documented. i have also managed to track down some lesser known combos like the Lichen leopard gecko (contains the enigma morph) and Meteor (also contains enigma) but there is still a LOT more ground to cover.

i have been combing through forums and morphmarket but I still need your help.

Try to picture yourself with a notebook in which you record every purchase or sale. Each time you do a transaction, you note it in the notebook. Now, what if you distributed this notebook amongst your friends and everyone had one? All of your buddies would scrutinize your entry before adding it to their notes. This way, nobody could fake an old entry, since everyone else would spot it.

Something known as blockchain is built upon this basic concept — sharing a record of transactions open for everyone to verify. Though it may sound intimidating, it is a technology gaining traction in the financial and computer sector. We will clarify it in this blog in simple words, so anybody may follow it.

What Exactly Does Blockchain Mean?

Fundamentally, blockchain is simply a unique form of digital record-keeping. Think of it as a series of blocks (hence the name “blockchain”), each block including transaction information. These blocks are related in a way that makes them quite stable and difficult to change.

Step by step, this is how it works:

A Transaction Occurs: Suppose Alice wants to give Bob $10. This is an interaction.

The transaction is registered: the information of this transaction is passed to a network of computer nodes instead of being written in one notebook.

Everyone Checks the Transaction: The computers in the network check to make sure Alice has $10 to transmit. By examining her past deals kept in earlier blocks, they do this.

The transaction is added to a block: Once everyone concurs it is legitimate, it gets formed with other transactions into a block.

The Block Is Sealed, attached: The block is assigned an individual code (known as a hash) and then included in the chain of already existing blocks. This makes a fixed, permanent record of the deal. There it is! It is like one huge, common ledger keeping track of all system events.

What Makes Blockchain Different?

Now, one might be wondering, “Why not simply use a normal database or spreadsheet?” Fantastic issue! Blockchain distinguishes itself by several distinct qualities.

It is distributed across.

Most models today have one main custodian — be it a bank, company, or government — that manages the records. The entire system can crumble if something goes wrong with that central authority — say, hacking or corruption.

Blockchain relies on many, but not one authority. It rather distributes the blame amongst several computers (nodes). Every node has a full blockchain copy, therefore no individual or group may manage it. This all but prevents evil actors from using the data.

It is transparent.

Given that each transaction is visible to all people in the network, and recorded on the blockchain, it is clear. You can observe when and where money or assets traveled from one location to another. Since no one can hide anything, this openness fosters confidence.

Consider how a nonprofit uses blockchain to monitor contributions, for instance. Donors might observe very clearly how their funds are used, therefore guaranteeing that they reach the intended beneficiaries without middlemen siphoning off funds.

Adding a transaction to the blockchain makes it virtually irrevocable.

Therefore: Every block has its distinct code (hash), including the one from the preceding block. Trying to change a block would also require one to re-compute the hashes for every subsequent block, hardly a small job.

Sending funds abroad the old way can take days and incur large charges, for example. Using blockchain-based cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, the same transaction can take minutes for a small percentage of the cost.
