Chapter 1
...In other words, it was a dark and stormy night?
Sorry. Couldn't resist.
Some dark warp-fuckery going on. The Night Lords also had some sort of this in the novel "Azrael" by Gav Thorpe, fucking with the sensory systems of the Deathwing. Still a very cool description of everything.
So, we meet Gaius, an Unnumbered Son of someone. Doesn't say whose. No, despite the name he is not Guilliman's, despite his company being commanded by a Novamarine (who is a Firstborn).
*googles*
mnemonic: assisting or intended to assist memory (pretty sure it was that, was checking for a secondary definition I didn't know)
kinaesthesia: sense mediated by receptors located in muscles, tendons, and joints, and stimulated by bodily movements and tensions; also: sensory experience derived from this sense
Okay, Gaius here is imagine his Sergeant walking down the line of the squads like during drills, reaching one of the other squads. But it's worded so weirdly. Or is that just me with English as a Foreign language? Listen, sentences and paragraphs like that make me feel self-concious about my English abilities, okay?
...Do I have to say it?
Alright, sums it up succintly enough. But maybe not like that?
Also, I am just saying that now - the time line of the scenes so far in the first few chapters is just all over the place. Switching back between the Night Lords' POV and Gaius and Co. is not helping it either.
Again? Really? Action scene incoming, with multi-page flashback in cursive stopping it?
No, bad practice! Bad! Do not aim a weapon at someone as a joke, even if it is unloaded!
Sergeant, Chaplain, someone kick his arse.
New Nickname for Bobby: Misguided Son.
Doesn't have the same ring as "Avenging Bean Counter" though.
Oh, no, I wouldn't have seen that coming!
A book titled "Wolftime" which has an immense meaning to the Space Wolves having at least one Primaris Space Wolf as a Protagonist. Not to mention that in the Dramatis Personae he is listed as Sergeant Gaius of Lupus-Six.
What I am saying, is, that it is not the intense, massive reveal it intends to be built up to. It just falls flat on its face.
To kinda contrast it with Space Marine 2's opening, you don't know for sure that it is Titus you are controlling. If you know and recogniize the VA, sure, you'll figure it out, sure, but if you don't know, it's a lot less clear. Could have been some random Blackshield with which the intent was to show off the Squad mechanics or customization options within the game, or be a seperate Marine character that would become important later on, especially because Titus was only shown in Marine armour (or shirtless). Only at the end of the prologue we find out for sure that it is our boy.
This... is just not working here.
This is a Space Marine. Their history, their origin and their Primarch especially is held up to such a high degree, that even a Primaris Unnumbered Son with little to no knowledge about Fenris and other Space Wolves will hold Leman Russ up before anything else. They worship them. They are the center of their identity. And Thorpe not outright saying that just feels out of character for pretty much every Space Marine. It is just off.

A few more deathwing models ready for the shelf! This time it's a Deathwing command squad led by a Strikemaster/Lieutenant. This was the first time in a while I've actually had fun basing a model, so I think I'll be using this style for the rest of the army. The bases are meant to look like the terrain on their home world, Triplex Gallatia, which was entirely devastated by the Dark Angels millenia ago.

Shattered Imperium - Planetfall
When the Thunderhawk Gunship was landing on the feudal world of Caltarn, the planetary defenses were bombarding the invasion force. The ship shook and rocked to avoid being hit. On board, the Dark Angels 16th Chapter command squad was prepared to land on the war-ravaged world. Additionally, the gunship carried an honor guard to protect the Chapter Captain and his command staff as they made their way to the battlefield.
"Pilot, how long until we breach the atmosphere?" asked Chapter Captain Makoto Naegi. He wore Dark Green Artificer Armor with silver trim with the Legion's symbol molded on its chest plate: a Silver-Colored Downward-Facing winged sword. He also wore the same symbol, but white on his left pauldron. On his right pauldron, it designated what rank he was and what Dark Angels chapter he belonged to.
"Sir, we will be landing in twenty-five minutes." responded the pilot.
Through the cockpit windows, Makoto watched as the drop pods of his legion plummeted down onto the battlefield below. Each drop pod contained ten superhuman soldiers trained in the arts of war each drawn from each of the six wings of the Legion.
"It's best you start prepping, brother-captain."
"Acknowledged." Makoto turned his back to the pilot, put on his dark green helmet, which had silver and red helmet wings, and made his way into the gunship's troop hold.
"Brothers, it's time."
At that sentence, every member of the command squad inside the troop hold turned to him as he spoke.
"We will enter a target-rich environment against a Chaos Incursion, so I need you all to be ready and alert. Our chapter's Ravenwing company, led by Brother-Captain Tsurugi and Ravenwing Champion Owada has already made planetfall and is harassing the enemy."
"Twenty minutes!" the pilot's voice boomed over the Vox system.
"Forge-wright Fujisaki," Makoto spoke, "I need you to start setting up a stronghold on the planet as soon as we get out. Tell the Balefire to send down reinforcements and the facilities of our stronghold."
"On it, Brother-Captain," Chihiro Fujisaki saluted. Chihiro was the Chapter's senior Techmarine. Like the 16th Chapter's command squad, he wore artificer armor, but he wore red armor because he was a forge-wright, a member of the Adeptus Mechanicus. Only his left pauldron and custom helmet were Dark Green. His servo-harness was folded up at this time.
"Fifteen minutes!" the pilot's voice boomed over the Vox system.
"Brother Hinata," Makoto spoke, "The Deathwing needs to help clear out the landing zone. Do you think you can do that?"
"Got it, Brother-Captain," Hajime Hinata saluted. Hajime was the Chapter's Deathwing Captain. He wore Bone-White Terminator Armor that indicated his role and rank. For the Deathwing, joining the chapter's 1st company wasn't just becoming a walking tank. It also meant learning the darkest secrets of the Legion, I.E learning of the Fallen Angels that followed Luther.
"Ten minutes!" the pilot's voice boomed over the Vox system again.
"Brother-Lieutenant Komaeda," Makoto spoke, "I need you to lead a task force to capture a vital location for a rallying point outside the city. You got that?"
"Yes, Brother-Captain," Nagito Komaeda spoke, "I believe that this will lead to a greater hope for the Legion!" Just like Makoto, Nagito wore Dark Green Artificer Armor with silver trim. His custom helmet was inspired by the Kettle Helmets worn by the knights of Ancient Terra.
"Five minutes!" the pilot's voice boomed over the Vox system yet again. "Get ready!"
"Everyone. You all know your jobs," Makoto spoke, "If you pull them off correctly, victory will come easily. So stay focused, stay on task, and stay alive. Let's do this."
The storm bird made landfall outside one of the feudal world's cities, the hive city of Claledon, which had been taken over by the two traitor legions. At their landing zone, the attackers were being hard-pressed by the counterattack from the traitors.
"We have made landfall!" the pilot's voice spoke over the Vox system, "Lowering the door!"
As the door lowered, the Command Squad and Honor Guard stood up and drew their weapons in anticipation of the coming battle. It would be something that these Space Marines wouldn't forget.

Visiting my parents this week and the local Warhammer store had two Deathwing box sets. An unprecedented luxury. Seriously, I started putting my latest Dark Angels army together in summer of 2019 and I haven’t seen one of these sets in the wild this entire time.
I did only buy one which will put my Deathwing army at three regular squads of five, one Knights squad of five, a command squad, Belial, and a venerable dreadnought. The store is having a sale this Saturday and if the second one is still there I’ll pick it up.
#warhammer#warhammer 40k#dark angels#deathwing#I'm not sure whether I want to buy a Land Raider though it feels like an obvious addition

Jack's End of Year Video Game Round-up.
There were many things I couldn't do this year, being in lockdown and all, which in turn meant I played a hell of a lot more video games than I normally do. Here's a quick rundown of what I thought of them.
Hitman 2
IO have sort of perfected the Hitman formula now, so future entries in the series simply have to ask the question of what new directions you can take that formula. In that regard Hitman 2 is a resounding success, setting sneaking and assassination in scenarios around the world from race tracks to holiday resorts, and thus making it the best entry yet. It's possible one day the Hitman conceit will wear thin, but today is not that day.
Thronebreaker
Most people will go into Thronebreaker just wanting a stand-alone version of the Gwent we played during Witcher 3. Thronebreaker is not that. Indeed, even beyond the changes to the mechanics brought in by the online version, Thronebreaker is more of a puzzle game which uses the mechanics of Gwent to concoct unique scenarios. Still, the story is pretty good and it is fun overall, even if it didn't end up scratching the itch left by Gwent.
Black Mesa (Xen)
I returned to Black Mesa after Xen was finally added, eager to see what the team had come up with. My feelings are complicated. The Xen portions of the game are really well designed, great to play and visually beautiful. However the levels hew so far from the Half-Life originals that it kind of stops feeling like Half-Life. I would have like to have seen a more faithful recreation to be honest.
Neon Struct
If you've been wanting a spiritual sequel to Thief that actually used the mechanics of Thief, here you go. Though low budget, and therefore having somewhat uninspiring visuals based on reused assets, it's still a really impressive game from what the team had to work with, and it's short enough that it doesn't outstay it's welcome.
Acid Spy
I'm generally usually okay at stealth games but this one was well beyond my skill level. Got through the tutorial but just got frustrated and quit on the first mission.
Salting the Earth
A wonderfully put together visual novel about the legacy of war and the nature of national identities. Also you date buff orc women. One of the best VNs I've played, but it does have some pretty bleak potential endings that clash somewhat with the rest of the story's tone.
Hedon
Speaking of buff orc women, Hedon is a vivid, perfectly designed retro-shooter that really uses the most of it's engine to bring it's world to life, with shades of Thief and Strife thrown in there. Wears its hornieness on it's sleeve, but if you can roll with that you'll have nothing but a good time.
The Painscreek Killings
I really really loved this immersive narrative game, where you explore an abandoned town to piece together a series of suspicious deaths. My only gripes are the town looks very British despite being set in the US, and the final confrontation adding a chase scene felt a little over dramatic.
Deus Ex Mankind Divided
There are many problems with Mankind Divided. Trying to find another story to do with Adam Jensen. Making the game more of an open world by taking away the usual Deus Ex globe-trotting. The clumsy use of racial metaphor being applied to cyborgs. All in all the game just didn't really come together, which is a shame, because the DLC showed such promise, and hinted at the real Deus Ex game we could have had.
Warhammer Armageddon DLC
I managed to complete the Salamanders DLC and got stuck near the end of the Blood Angels one. All in all it's simply 'more' of what the base game offered, and I'm not sure it really needed it.
Unavowed
Easily one of the most interesting games I played this year. So good It inspired me to write a cheesy fanfic. Sure the mechanics of applying squad mechanics to a point and click are interesting, but it's the world, the art and the characters themselves that really make this game. Highly recommended.
Devil Daggers
The ultimate distillation of classic shooter mechanics. One platform, one weapon, endless enemies. I didn't get all that far into it and I think most people won't, but I'm not going to complain for the price. Overdue a revisit.
Dream Daddy
A fun and fluffy dating game that actually does a good job of putting you into the mindset of a recently bereaved bisexual dad. Come for the hunks, stay for the really affecting story of a strained relationship between father and daughter.
Greedfall
Greedfall falls short of the mark in most aspects, but I have to give it credit for being one of the few games to give us a Bioware companion-centric adventure during this drought of Bioware games. It lacks the zing of something like Dragon Age, and handles the subject of colonialism really problematically, but if you can get past those issues, it's a fun ride, and a world I'd like to revisit.
Endless Legend
I've been wanting a game to scratch the Alpha Centauri itch for decades now and Endless Legend finally did it. There is a risk of being overwhelmed by the sheer number of unique factions to play, and I know I still haven't really scratched the surface even after 4 full campaigns. Is that a criticism? I suppose it depends if you think you can have too much of a good thing.
Space Hulk Deathwing Enhanced Edition
A valiant effort was put in to make a faithful FPS of the Space Hulk experience, but ultimately it falls far too short. The visuals look great and the game-feel of stomping around as a Space Marine really works, but the game lacks charm and character. Up against Vermintide, there's no comparison.
Sunless Sea
This is a game that feels like a bottomless abyss of secrets and mysteries tied up in a very brutal one-life-only system. I really enjoyed my time with Sunless Seas, with the music calling me like a wailing siren every now and again, yet in many ways I did find it a bit too unforgiving, and it could have benefited from having a bit more of a progression between lives than the almost solid reset it leaves you with.
Age of Empires / 2 / 3 Definitive Editions
The first Age of Empires has an important place in history, but is borderline unplayable by today's standards. Almost every aspect was improved in 2 and going back now feels like trading a car for a horse and cart. It's clear that the game was intending your slow crawl out of the stone age through hunting and gathering to be part of the game in its own right, but today it's just tedious, and the rest of the game is just so slow.
There isn't much to say about Age of Empire 2 that I haven't already said, but I will point out that multiplayer AOE2 has kept me sane over the course of the lockdown, and I'm glad the Definitive Edition enhanced that experience.
Age of Empire 3 tried too hard to reinvent the wheel. Instead of taking 2 and building on it, it instead contorted it around a colonisation theme, and it didn't really work. On top of that, the mechanics really felt they were built more for single-player story missions. The maps are too small, and the expansion factions clash with the rules badly. Still, there is fun to be had, and I'll be checking out the campaigns next year.
Hand of Fate 2
This game takes the original Hand of Fate and adds way, way too much into it. While I appreciate the addition of companions, a longer story mode, and optional side missions, the game is far too experimental with it's formula, and leaves me struggling with complex missions around being lost in a desert or evading barbarian hordes, when all I wanted was a straight forward dungeon crawl. I tapped out two thirds of the way through the campaign.
Wild Guns Reloaded
I love the style and aesthetic, but I just don't have the reflexes (or the gamepad) for these fast paced arcade games.
Vermintide 2 Drakenfels
Fatshark gave us an entire Vermintide campaign for free this year, at the cost of having to be subjected to obnoxious cosmetic micro-tranactions. Hard to say it was worth the price, but Fatshark really do continue to improve, bringing new scope and ideas to every new mission. As good as it gets.
Pendula Swing
A fun little game that apes the visuals of a Baldur's Gate style RPG but the mechanics of a point and click adventure game set in a fantasy version of the roaring twenties. A strong introduction to it's setting but definitely needs building on if we're to see a continuation. A lot of the world-building feels too simple and half-baked at times, and the gameplay feels like too much is going on too fast. Still, a charming story though.
The Shiva / The Blackwell Series
At first I had no idea that Unavowed was connected to a host of other Wadget Eye adventure games, so naturally I had to check them out. I'd known about The Shiva and the Blackwell games for years, but never actually thought about picking them up. Playing them all back to back was a great experience, and almost felt like a prototype to the episodic storytelling many games do today.
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light/Temple of Osiris
Guardian of Light is a fun, inventive co-op game for killing some time with a friend. The puzzles are often unique and interesting and get you thinking, and the story, while nothing fantastic, is fun enough to keep you interested and have a laugh about with your co-op partner in a B-Movie kind of way. Temple of Osiris adds way too much to the formula, with more characters, mechanics and more open exploration and it absolutely loses the charm of the first game, and even then it's buggy as hell. Skip the second one.
Command and Conquer Remastered
Big chunks of my childhood are taken up with memories of playing Command and Conquer and Red Alert, so it's difficult to really gauge my thoughts on the remaster. On the one hand the art direction looks great and preserves the feel of the original, and the quality of life improvements to the gameplay help make it more playable. The nostalgia hit is also palpable. That being said, the mechanics have not aged all that well, with much of the game being far, far too hard. Probably the best way to experience the genesis of the RTS genre but just know what you're getting in for.
Superhot Mind Control Delete
I wrote a lot at length about how unsure I was about Mind Control Delete at the time, and that's because it does feel a little unsure about itself. Is it a continuation of the first game? A fun bonus mode? A mediation on the nature of addiction? A critique of video game content? A joke on the player? I don't know, but I do know one thing, and that is that Superhot is still as addictive as hell.
Opus Magnum
Zachtronic's steampunk alchemy game requires far too much maths brain than I am capable of , and so I had to rely on guides a lot of the time, but that being said, it's still amazingly put together and vividly presented. Really feels like a game that could be used in schools.
Necromunda Underhive Wars (Story Mode)
I'll be checking out Underhive's Campaign mode in the new year, but for now I just want to talk about the story mode. Much like Mordheim, this is a game that's not going to work for everyone, but I really dug it and like it's unique take on a squad based TBS. However, in many respects the game does feel like a missed opportunity. The storyline is fun enough, and the arsenal robust, but much of the character of the tabletop game, the weird, chaotic, and sometimes comical things that can happen over the course of a battle seems to have been lost in translation, as has the quirky character to a lot of the gangs.
Outer Wilds
There is little I can say about Outer Wilds that hasn't already been said by others, particularly that one should go into the game as blind as possible. A beautiful piece of interactive art, words would fail me in describing it anyway.
Life is Strange 2
Fantastically written, amazingly animated, wonderfully acted, and grim and depressing as all hell. I really love Life is Strange 2, but it it a tough game to bare witness to, especially in 2020. It treats it's subject matter with great maturity, but is so dark it's hard to motivate yourself to continue each gruelling episode. Also, I really think it would have fared better if it had not named itself Life is Strange 2, as not following Max and Chloe turned a lot of people away from a game I think they'd have otherwise enjoyed if they'd named it Wolf Brothers or something.
Half Life 2 / Episodes / Portal / 2/ Mel
After playing Black Mesa earlier this year I decided to revisit the entire Half Life 2 and Portal series. What I concluded is that Half Life 2 is not really all that good. A well told story wrapped around weak combat and average encounter design. This much improves across the episodes of course, but in the end I rather feel Half Life 2 is pretty overrated.
Portal, on the other hand, still feels fresh, though I was surprised I'd forgotten just how much was added in Portal 2, to the point Portal feels more like a game demo. That being said, I think the slowly growing mystery and menace of Portal has aged a lot better than the gagfest the series became with 2. Mel, a stand-alone mod that feels like could be a Portal 3 in it's own right, returns to a more serious tone, and feels all the stronger because of it.
Control
Control has gone from a game I didn't really care about all that much to one of my favourites of the year, if not the decade. Sure there are criticisms I could make, but the world has so much depth, the characters so much potential, and the gameplay such perfectly designed chaos, that it wouldn't really matter. A great time was had.
Icewind Dale 2
Finishing Icewind Dale 2 was the final banishing of the old ghosts of Infinity Engine games I never finished as a kid. Sure there was the nostalgia, but Icewind Dale 2 also feels prefect for the Baldurs Gate era's swan song. Beautiful environments, a well written story and great interface and design, only pulled down due to some overly long busywork at various points and the plot being dragged on a little too long. Still, sad to know I have no further Infinity Engine games left to conquer.
Elsinore
The first half of Elsinore is an absolutely great time-loop mystery, which seems to be an interesting interrogation of Shakespearian tropes and asks the question of how much of a Shakespearian tragedy remains the more you change it. The second half, however, quickly devolves into a cosmic horror story that feels a poor fit for the genre and far too grim for the art style, and that's even before it basically devolves into trying to do the same thing Undertale did but worse. A well put together game whose ending did not sit well with me.
Gwent: The Witcher Card Game
Since Thronebreaker didn't sate my appetite I started playing competitive Gwent. It is a wholly different game than the one that appears in The Wither 3, but is certainly fascinating in it's own right. After 200 hours I am officially addicted, somebody please send help.
And that's that. Not doing a top 5 games of the year because I played too many this year and I've spent too much time thinking about them already. Here's hoping I play less in 2021 and can get back to a more normal life.

Advanced Recon - Infiltrators
Here we go, at long last I can start looking into the units of the Vanguard. Today is the turn of the Infiltrators Infiltrators are a Primaris Troops choice clad in the Phobos armour of the Vanguard Being Marines they have the Chapter Tactics and Angels of Death rules. The other common rule they have is the Concealed Positions, which can be found here.
So what do they have?
They come stock with bolt pistol and a bolter, though unlike the standard bolter, their Marksman Bolt Carbine automatically wounds on an unmodified hit roll of 6. They come as standard with Omni Scramblers which prevents units being set up from reinforcements within 12 inch of them. They have the SMOKESCREEN keyword a rundown of which can be found here. Their only customisation option comes in the form of taking either a Helix Gauntlet or Infiltrator Comms Array. The Helix Gauntlet changes the damage of the first failed save to 0. In 8th it used to be used to heal a model, this is better as it just lets you shrug off the first bit of damage, and then your Apothecary can heal you in your command phase. It also forces your opponent to think about what resources he wants to commit and in what order. If he's planning on using heavy weapons to shift your infiltrators, will he hit you with light arms first as you ignoring 1 damage is a lot better than ignoring that flat 2 or higher for them. The Comms Array is useful if you're running multiple units of infiltrators and a Phobos Lieutenant or Captain as it allows the unit to always be in range of any of any Chapter PHOBOS units on the table for Rites of Battle (reroll 1s to hit) and Tactical Precision (reroll 1s to wound) It allows you to spread out which I think is key, not only for running a heavy objective play but also to deny reinforcements from arriving over large areas. Your isolated units of Comms equipped infiltrators will still be as reliable as if they were bunched up.
So what use are they?
Infiltrators bring a lot and depending on your Chapter can be either really durable or pretty decent offensively. You can keep them around your deployment zone to stop enemy reinforcements showing up. Just because you have Concealed Positions doesn’t mean you have to be forward. If your opponent is going for your objective with a reinforcement heavy list this zones them out. Who wants those Deathwing Terminators and Sanguinary Guard popping up, not to mention Genestealer Cults.
You could use your infiltrators as shock troops. Use their Concealed Positions to get them up close, go for Assault doctrine to give your bolters some AP and shoot away. This works well as Imperial Fists with their hits of 6 giving an extra hit, though it must be noted that that extra hit isn’t an automatic wound, those days are gone. Give them the Comms Array and you don’t have to worry about spreading out to still get your benefits.
The final way I can see you using these is as really obnoxious denial units. You're a Troops choice and so have Objective secured. Pop a Helix Gauntlet in there, run as say Iron Hands for your 6+ negate wounds, keep the SMOKESCREEN strat handy and make rushes on the enemy objectives. In order to stop you the enemy will need to focus on your push rather than the pure damage dealers you may have elsewhere. If not they will need to swarm objectives with cheaper Troops units which when your guys have a minimum of 3 attacks each in the first round of combat and 2 power armoured wounds to chew through can make for a slog on their part.
So do you take them
In short, Yes. Long answer is that it depends on the size of your game and composition of your force. In low power games, say 25-50 it can be tight to fit in, 6 power troop units, larger games make it easier. Needless to say, one squad to run interferance will never be a bad idea. So are you taking them now? Back next time with Incursors.

I want to get the Dark Angels Legion Deathwing Companion set because I just came up with the idea that they would act as a bodyguard for the Chapter Master among the 1st Company.
Or just use them as the basis for a cool looking chapter command squad.
I just want those helmets.

Battle Report Dark Angels Vs Guard and Inquisitors
2500 pts of death and destruction.
Dark Angels Highlighted units: Leviathan Dreadnought with claw and gun, One Dark Talon, Azreal, a Lieutenant with blood angel arm (He has his own story.). Ezykyle, and a phobos captain running another detachment.
Imperial Guard Highlighted units: Inquisitor Karazmotov,, did I spell that right? Lord Commisar Guant, two squads of stormtroopers, and one Hellevua Lemon Russ tank commander.
Highlights of the game: Ever see a reiver squad and Ezykyle go up against Guant and his command squad.... its not pretty for the guard.
Ever see a Lemon Russ score 25+ Astartes Kills plus two more in melee after being engaged by a squad of Deathwing Knights. Neither have I.
Ever see a Lev Dread charge two stormtrooper squads and turn them into his personal play things. I have.
Ever see Karazmotov go up against Azreal and a Primarus LT only to beat both to one wound and then to completely wiff the follow up round leading to his death. HELL YA I HAVE.
RESAULT: DARK ANGEL VICTORY!!!

After Action Report: Abate the Edge of Traitors
After going to all the effort* to write a fluffy intro to this battle, I then have had zero interest in writing a fluffy after action report. I think the problem is taking unpainted miniatures - it’s a bit hard to get worked up or invested in the death of Senor Greyskin and his trusty sidekick, Lady Dull Metallic, when I could instead get really into the clash of arms between, say, Brother-Veteran Hitoshi, warrior of the Mantis Warriors, and Matthias the Vicious, the dread serial killer of Nužudymas, cultist of Qyn Kraugeriškas, pirate-slave of Malachi the Surly, ya know?
It doesn’t help that @littlemangsofwar has some of the worst luck in recorded history.
My writer’s block is especially frustrating when Mangs puts a great deal of effort into his lists. Task Force Vengeance is fully named, from Librarian Cassiel down to the Land Raider Redeemer Purity Rolling.** I need to step up my game, both in terms of painting and in terms of, you know, writing. Things.
Anyway, this clash was really fun on paper. Mangs’s Dark Angels list is pretty mechanised, featuring a Nephillim Jetfighter (Caliban’s Wrath), a Predator, Razorback, a Rhino, scouts, a pack of Deathwing as well as officers. It’s not the most optimized list for 8th edition Dark Angels, as they actually really want to stand very still and get free re-rolls, but it is cool as hell to look at.
The Ravenwing were just here to scout the battlefield, then peeled away for another, more important mission elsewhere (he didn’t actually include them in the list! A mistake we’ve all made.).
I had a really bizarre list, swelled with unpainted units to try and match @littlemangsofwar‘s cool Dark Angels. In the centre of the board, I massed my marines in cover, as well as some slightly forward scouts (including the new snipers and the Crusaders, who took up stances around an old console in the ruins). I had some attack bikes waiting in reserve, hidden behind buildings. On the right flank, the Radical Inquisitor took up position in his commandeered Razorback, behind a Tactical squad and some... uh... ash-camouflaged Assault Marines.
The blocks are actually a Daemonhost containing a warp spirit of Order, which I have some very cool ideas on, but they can wait until I paint more of the Inquisitor’s band of acolytes. The new Blackstone Fortress actually has a bunch of models that I was planning on converting for his gang, so that is going to be very hard to resist.***
I also had two squads of Ratlings, led by a Squat commander and accompanied by an Astropath, part of the Inquisitor’s extended retinue. The Mantis Warriors marching into battle accompanied by xenos, a daemonhost, and semi-humans! Not a great look, but they were here to fight the Dark Angels, who themselves have a less than savoury reputation.
We played a variation of Cleanse and Capture, which I’ll drop below the cut. Essentially it was the same scenario but we each had some bonus Tactical Objectives we wanted to achieve to give the thing a bit of flavour.
The objective markers were intended to represent archaeological sites that may contain information on + + + REDACTED BY INQUISITORIAL EDIT 7532/ω + + + which obviously the Dark Angels also sought.
I know I just wrote a lot of words about the scenario, but I’m afraid that I’m not up for a prolonged blow-by-blow of the game, so here are some highlights:
Despite a tremendous amount of possible mortal wound output from my three squads of snipers (two Ratling and one Mantis), I only killed about three Tactical marines from them all game. Of course, Ratling squads are only 45 points, so it’s still not a bad choice.
Early in the game, my attack bike with a multi-melta swung out and nearly one-shotted the Predator Silencer. In anger at this, @littlemangsofwar fired nearly his whole bloody army at the little bikers, only finally killing them with a plasma rifleman who then died in the explosion. What heroes.
There he is, tucked behind that barricade there.
The advanced (and second-most recently painted) sniper scouts that were holding the objective in the ruins were brutally cut down in a single round by a combination of Redeemer flamers and a Dark Angels Tactical Squad. Said squad would then hole up in that ruin for the rest of the game, sniper fire plinking off their power armour and holding my Assault Marines at bay.
The Inquisitor and his minions did very little. I’ll admit that I strongly dislike their rules in the Index - they get almost no character and kind of encourage the worst kind of spam. Take lots with plasma guns! Each one man unit is an Elite choice! And you can’t have cool models with twin swords or twin pistols actually count as those weapons! Lame.
Purity Rolling gets assaulted by the Mantis Warriors officer cadre.
In a pitched fight that goes to show why tanks don’t like urban battlefields, Purity Rolling got swarmed by my entire HQ and my teleporting Terminator Squad and got chipped to death. I was very lucky, getting off that 9″ charge, and it did come down to the power sword of the Sergeant, but it was still brutal.
Brother-Apothecary Jiyuna wimping out and refusing to charge Purity Rolling which is fair enough, really.
@littlemangsofwar kept the pressure on my Devastator Squad, but his fucking appalling dice rolling in this game meant that they lasted most of it. I don’t believe they did anything useful, but they just kept absorbing his fire.
pew pew
Beneath the Devastators, in the same ruins, were a Tactical Squad, which got assaulted by one of the Dark Angels Tacticals. The battle was fairly even, frustratingly, for several battle rounds, despite the assistance of my Brother-Apothecary Jiyun, Lieutenant Khan Nguyen Thi Kim, and the abhuman company commander in service of the Inquistion. The latter had a powerfist! He didn’t hit once!
His brothers cut down around him, Brother-Sergeant Kiraman fights against overwhelming odds.
An absolute beast who would. not. die. This caption refers to Kiraman, and not anyone wearing green, white, or blue. Jerks.
In the centre, my command squad and both units of Terminators kept wailing on one another for several turns. Between adroit use of psychic powers and @littlemangsofwar‘s gross luck, I came out on top, although my First Company warriors were annihilated to a man.
A glorious melee.
Chief Librarian Ahazra Redth channeling the Warp.
On the right flank, there is nothing much to report. Caliban’s Wrath was pretty wrathful, taking out my Inquisitor’s Razorback. Scouts and fire from various other tanks took down most of the acolytes, including the Slann and the exiled Aeldari ranger, but the Inquisitor himself was able to channel the powers of the warp and take out the scouts. The glowing cubic forms of the daemonhost did something between ‘nothing’ and ‘waste time’.
A rhino burns in the distance as Mantis Warriors Tactical Marines advance.
Overall, this game wasn’t as much fun as I would have liked. Don’t get me wrong, @littlemangsofwar is always cool to hang out with, but his luck was just so awful. It’s no fun watching your opponent roll ten dice and get two hits.
I was using Raven Guard rules for the Mantis Warriors, as I do feel that it’s the best feel for their hit-and-run tactics in the fluff, but it’s also a very strong Chapter Tactic. Certainly light-years better than the terrible ‘you hit harder if you charge out of cover... for some reason’ rules they are reputed to have had two editions ago.
Hopefully, the next time @littlemangsofwar and I have a full game of 40K, our luck will even out. We did have two Kill Team games on Sun 28 Oct, and those went very differently!
I’ll leave you with at atmospheric**** photo of Squad Nakir of the Dark Angels...
Final score: Victory, Mantis Warriors. (Dark Angels withdraw.)
Men of the Match: Attack Bike with multi-melta. Toughness five, four wounds, baby!
Lesson to Remember: Dark Angels infantry get to re-roll ones if they don’t move that turn.
+ + + Thought for the Day: By the manner of their death we shall know them. + + +
Scenario: Maelstrom of War scenario Cleanse and Capture (see p.230 of the rulebook).
Modifications:
Terrain:
As traditional, whoever gets there first places terrain; second-comer can choose deployment side.
Placing objectives:
As I'm picking the scenario, you can choose whether to place the first or second objective. You may also choose which deployment type (p.216) we want to use.
Tactical Objectives:
As written (that is, we generate Tactical Objectives until we hold three), but we start with some at the beginning of the game in addition. Unlike regular TOs, we can't discard these, but they don't count against the maximum of 3 anyway.
You (Dark Angels) will start with 13 Confess! and 14 Seize and Interrogate in addition to rolling up/drawing three more.
I (Space Marines) will start with 12 Honour Your Chapter and I also have a made-up version of the Dark Angels 14 Seize and Interrogate by the Inquisitor (see below) in addition to rolling up/drawing three more.
(special) 14 Seize and Interrogate by the Inquisitor Score 1 victory point if any enemy CHARACTERS, DEATHWING UNITS, or RAVENWING BLACK KNIGHT UNITS were slain by an INQUISITION unit in the Fight phase of this turn. If your opponent’s Warlord was slain by an INQUISITION unit during the Fight phase of this turn, score D3 victory points instead.
First Turn:
Rather than whoever finishes deployment automatically getting first turn (which can be brutal in this edition), I suggest we go with the system used in the Chapter Approved scenarios:
The players roll off, and the player who finished setting up their army first adds 1 to their result. The winner can choose to take the first or second turn. If they take the first turn, their opponent can roll a D6; on a 6, they manage to seize the initiative, and they get the first turn instead!
Everything else is the same as a standard Cleanse and Capture: Warlord, First Blood, Linebreaker; highest victory points is the winner; 5 turns and then start rolling for extra turns on a 3+; etc etc.
* Literally like five minutes before going to bed. ** A great blend of the sorts of names US soldiers give to their tanks and the 40K hellverse. *** Ratlings!!!!! **** Bad.

Note
Hey I was just wondering I saw your post about your 40k army, I was wondering what models your space marines were? Did you kit bash them?
Nope! They’re Deathwing Knights. You can get them as either a specific box from GW or you can make them from the Deathwing Command Squad box as well!

Welcome to my fist 8th Edition Battle Report! It was 100 power level against Dark Angels. I wrote and published my 100 power level Astra Militarum list a few days ago. This might get fairly lengthy, so if you want to see how 8th works then keep going.

Land Raider Crusader withHunter Killer Missile, 2x Hurricane Bolters, Storm Bolter, Multi Melta, Twin Assault Cannon.
7 Command Points in total. Not many models here it seems! Wow! I had become fairly optimistic once I knew this list just before the battle. Was I right to be optimistic – read on!
Dark Angels force – the Tactical Marines in the ruins are proxy Intercessor Marines and the Raptors in the lower left are proxy Inceptors.
Imagery
I will sprinkle in some relevant photos, rather than try and show a picture for each and every event in each turn.
Mission
We played the new Cities of Death mission which has a couple of twists:
Infantry units that do not move for a whole turn in a ruin gain a +2 cover bonus, not +1.
Grenades against units in ruins use their maximum attacks and you can re-roll wounds.
Units targeted by shooting attacks from enemies height advantage (>3″ elevation) do not gain a cover bonus.
Streets and Roads give units +2″ movement or +4″ if they Advance.
Some nice twists here! The Grenades and Roads rule never came into play. The other two were interesting though.
We also got access to four specific Stratagems:
Sewer Rats 2CP – allows an Infantry unit to set up more than 9″ from any enemy in any of your Movement phases.
Medicare Facility 1CP – select a ruin for this ability, embarked units get an extra 6+ save.
Death in the Streets 1CP – used on a friendly unit with a hight advantage (>3″ elevation) when it shoots an enemy unit that is entirely at street level – You can re-roll failed to hit and to wound rolls.
Booby Traps 1CP – select a ruin for this ability that is not occupied, the first model to enter the ruin gets D3 Mortal Wounds (D6 is they Advance into the ruin).
We placed 6 objectives in 6 different city ruins. The winner would be the person with the most after 6 turns. Too many sixes. Slaanesh lurks near.
We have a house rule that is;
If a building has more than one level you cannot see at all through the ground floor – even if its completely open.
This is because some buildings on the ground floor are completely covered and some have small gaps that you can just see through. Its easier to just say you cannot see through any at all. This also massively increases the amount of cover available.
8th Edition Battle Report Deployment
We deployed in opposite quarters on a 6’x4′ board. The centre of the board was very busy as the Dark Angels stacked up towards the centre. I placed my Sentinels close to the centre along with my Conscripts to try and slow the advance. Just about every Dark Angels unit deployed as close as possible to the centre of the table!
My Wyverns went right at the back in cover and were hidden. With the Master of Ordnance right next to them. I made a massive error and placed Pask on my left flank and the other two Leman Russ on the right flank. Such a waste of two tank orders per turn! Chimeras went on opposite flanks too to try and grab objectives not in my deployment zone.
My two Infantry Squads with Lascannons I placed in four story high ruins to get a height advantage. Creed stayed with one of the squads, as did Kell. I needed Creed near a Vox Caster.
The Ratlings deployed in the 4th story of a building just outside my deployment zone. I think I should have forced them forward more and into danger. But it would’ve given them a much better view of the field.
We both Booby Trapped a building and we both designated a building as a Medicare Facility. My facility contained Creed and the Dark Angel’s facility contained two squads of five Intercessor Marines.
Given the lack of Dark Angel units they finished deploying first which gave the choice of going first or second. They went fist. Azrael has deployed in a fantastic position, on the ground floor of a ruin right by my Sentinel in the 5th photo below. He can give out his re-roll to hit and 4+ Invulnerable Save to all Intercessor Squads, a Land Raider and the Deathwing Knights from here. And I cannot see him.

Turn 1
Dark Angels
The Inceptors set off my Booby Trap and a model took a single Mortal Wound. Yeah!
It seems that at some point in the past the Conscripts disrespected the Dark Angels hugely. They took 38 casualties in the first turn of shooting. Luckily the Commissar stopped them from taking loads of additional casualties. More shooting from so many Bolter based weapons soon wiped out a squad of Guardsmen that were overlooking the street. Even with their improved cover save of 4+ they all perished. The amount of anti infantry sounds the Dark Angels had was impressive. Assault Cannons, Intercessor Marines, Inceptor Marines, Hurricane Bolters, etc.
The Lascannons and Multi-Meltas on the Land Raiders did a little damage to a Leman Russ but not enough to decrease its stat line. The Chimeras were unharmed as were the hidden Wyverns.
The Land Raider Crusader ejected its Deathwing Knights and rumbled towards Pask. The Deathwing Knights assaulted a Sentinel and removed all its wounds with ease. The Inceptors charged my Conscripts and removed a couple of Models. But not before I spent 2CPs to ensure my Conscripts hit first – this seemed a little excessive for ten Conscripts to hit the Inceptors. But with the Priest near by and their 20 attacks they caused a single wound. Which finished off the wounded Marine from the Booby Trap. Little steps men, little steps.
My remaining Conscripts after turn 1
Astra Militarum
I was positive still at this point. I had lost a squad of Guardsmen, a Sentinel and 40 Conscripts. A lot of models but my force was still intact and was able to operate effectively.
My Chimeras race forwards, one down a flank to take an objective that no one is near and the other right into the path of a Land Raider, ready to charge it next turn along with its embarked Guardsmen. Pask moves up to shoot the “side armour” of the Land Raider, still miles away from his fellow Leman Russ. Gah! I do not move anything else as they already have good lines of fire and the Wyverns can fire where ever they wish to!
While I have a lot of shooting there is nothing really amazing that stands out here. The Deathwing Knights take a casualty or two from the Wyverns. The Leman Russ with their Battle Cannons and 9 heavy Bolter shots damage the Deathwing Knights further. There is now only two left and one is down to one wound.
The Ratlings pick out the Chaplain from the crowd and cause a wound. Pask unloads two Multi-Meltas, a Lascannon and 20 Punisher shots into the Land Raider Crusader. He does no damage. A Chimera fires a Hunter Killer Missile into the same Land Raider and causes two wounds. This game! Argh!
The bravest Chimera is all the kingdom
Turn 4 Summary
There was no explodes on turn one from a lucky shot! Things are hellish durable and the tanks just shrug off shots. My infantry are wasting away as quickly as I expected them too. But I think I have rolled more saves for infantry in 8th so far than I did for the entire lifetime of 7th. The new AP system really suits the weaker saves as you will usually get some sort of save, especially in cover. Where as in 7th your save was often just flat out ignored. Power to the flak armour!
Turn 2
Dark Angels
The Land Raider that has the Deathwing Terminators in now moves up after disembarking its troops. The Terminators are eyeing up my other Sentinel. And the remaining two Deathwing Knights move to assault a Leman Russ – in 7th this would be game over, what about in 8th?
There is little other movement from the Dark Angels. The Chaplain sits around as does Azrael who is still hidden in the grey ruin behind the Terminators in the photo below. I cannot see him! His re-roll to hit is really working well for all those Intercessor Marines above him in the ruin as they keep just chipping away at my Infantry Squads.
Shooting is poor overall with no big results and only a few wounds to a Leman Russ and my infantry. The Conscripts are still locked in combat and so cannot be shot up my Bolter rounds. Pas is reduced to half wounds in one volley from a Land Raider’s Multi-Melta. His BS is no worse, attacks are worse and his movement is reduced. Darn!
The Deathwing Terminators slay my other Sentinel with ease and consolidate towards the Leman Russ pictured below. They en this movement within 1″ of the Leman Russ – I think.
8th query:
You have to consolidate towards the nearest enemy unit – but there is no rule that says you must end the move outside of 1″? Therefore you can legally enter combat again in a consolidation move and prevent the target from firing in their next turn?
The Conscripts and Inceptors remain in combat and are generally doing no wounds to one another and my Commissar prevents the Conscripts from removing multiple models.
Finally the Deathwing Knights charged my Leman Russ who removed a single wound from the unit which killed another Deathwing Knight. There is now only one left.
8th query:
Can you Overwatch with all your weapons on a vehicle? I had presumed so because Overwatch is the same as the Shooting Phase – but you are just hitting on sixes?
Deathwing Terminators get ready for some smash time!
Astra Militarum
My Leman Russ fall back from their positions and away from the Deathwing threats. They cannot shoot now. The Conscripts stay in Combat and the Priest moves up to stay close by. The Commissar moves in too to charge the Inceptors with his Power Fist and Plasma Pistol. My Chimera continues its flanking maneuver to take an objective.
Mean while the brave Chimera who is head to head with a Land Raider disembarks its Infantry Squad.
Chimera and Guardsmen prepare to charge!
Without my LemanRuss firing this turn my damage output is reduced. The Wyverns are able to now hit the Deathwing Terminators and cause a wound or two. They really did badly this turn. I am finding the Wyvern an odd unit now. It relies so heavily on the 2D6 roll for the hits. If that fails to be high and you get 4 shots you end up with 2 hits and 1 wound – which is then saved. Even the re-rolling of ones from the MoO does not really help in these instances.
The Ratlings whiff as they try and remove the final Deathwing Terminator.
The Lascannon with the Infantry Squad near Creed does some wounds to the Land Raider. Creed order’s his own unit (I mean the unit near him – its not his unit anymore) and the nearly disembarked Guardsmen at street level to re-roll ones to hit.
After pounding everything into the Land Raider near the Chimera it goes down to one wound. It takes the Chimera, the two Lascannons I have, Lasgun Array, Lasgun shots, Pask’s Lascannon, Pask’s Punisher and Pask’s Multi-Meltas. So. Durable. Argh! But its down to one wound now. The Chimera charges, survives, followed by the Guardsmen.
The Conscripts remain in combat and survive. The Commissar kills an Inceptor. The Guardsmen and Chimera fail to take the Land Raider’s single last wound. So. Durable. Argh!
Turn 2 Summary
I am now starting to see how movement works in 8th. How it is really key and that 8th is about openness and not about restrictions. This idea I first saw on Oakenhawk’s blog and in the comments – thanks Thor. 8th is no longer about;
randomness, you cannot move there, you cannot do that, oh gosh you want to what – roll a dice and see if you can – no you cannot.
Now you can move there. You want to move that Guardsmen 6″ from there to there via that ruin, yes please do it now. Instantly. No rolling, its done and it has happened for sure. With this in mind you can plan things a lot better it seems. You no longer have to have thought processes like this;
Well if I want to move back to this objective. I might make it in two turns, but I might not. Because I need to run twice which might be 1″ in total or it might be 6″ in total. I need to run too which might be 1″ and might be 6″. This gives me a possible move distance of between 1″ and 12″.
Now you can just get shit done. If it can move 6″ then it can move 6″. Done.
This became apparent in this turn when I moved my Chimera up to block the Land Raider and when moving my Leman Russ out of combat. It just happened. No randomness.
Turn 3
Dark Angels
Now things become grainy in my mind – but less is happening now as it gets later into the night and we try and start to grab objectives. As above regarding movement, grabbing objectives is easier now in the late game as you know more more accurately how far your units can move.
With the Land Raider Crusader still alive with one wound it pulls out of combat. The Deathwing Terminators give up on the Leman Russ and make for the flanking Chimera and its occupants. This is good. My Leman Russ can fire again! The single remaining Deathwing Knight also moves towards my Wyverns, Master of Ordnance and the objective they hold. This also frees up a Leman Russ for firing.
The Dark Angels are stalling now. Deathwing Knights are nearly gone, the Land Raider Crusader is hitting on 5+ now due to only having one wound. The Deathwing Terminators are now forced to move at speed across the board to catch my Chimera. The Intercessors are running out of viable targets because the grinding Conscript combat is still happening and Creed’s squad is in some hard 2+ cover.
My Leman Russ that fell back from the Deathwing Knight
Astra Militarum
The flanking Chimera disembarks its cargo by an objective. Objective secured.
I am confident now of a win. The Dark Angels are stalling so I unleash everything at them to finish of their units. The Wyverns fail to do one wound on the one Deathwing Knight. So does a Leman Russ. Pask fails to do one wound on the Land Raider Crusader which has one wound left. The Lascannon Heavy Weapons Team also fails to take the last wound. That 2+ save makes all the difference here for the Land Raider. Even against a Multi-Melta it gets a 6+ save.
The Ratlings are down to just 3 men now and so do no damage for the rest of the game. Misses and saves ensure this. I love these guys though, I feel like that one day they do something spectacular and be elevated to a position above a Vindicare Assassin.
Chimera disembarks its troops to take this ruin with an objective on the top floor
Summary
We are both only now starting to think about objectives and moving towards them. Although the Chimera pictured above was moving towards this objective for the whole game. With the new none restrictive focus of the game it is now so much easier to move around as you want and need to.
We nearly stopped at this point, but my opponent wanted to try and win because I thought I had won easily. I had three objectives, he had one. We continued for two more turns.
Turns 4 & 5
Dark Angels
The Chaplain and remaining Inceptor (which broke away from the Conscripts) move right back into the Dark Angels deployment zone to grab two different objectives. This is what I mean about movement, its now just so easy.
The Intercessors just stayed put and finished off the Squad that Creed had been with. Creed was now safe as the Dark Angels had no Snipers and no way of moving to make Creed the closest enemy model. The Intercessors had sat on the same objective all game in the centre of the board. Azrael finally moved out and into another ruin to further bolster the Intercessors who were holding the objective. This was the furthest Azrael moved all game.
The Dark Angels destroyed my Guardsmen and Chimera on the right flank that had moved up to take an objective. The Deathwing Terminators ensured their fate and then took over their objective.
Astra Militarum
I finished off the Land Raider with the single wound left! But failed to kill the Chaplain or Inceptor that had taken objectives. The Intercessors with a +2 bonus due to cover and Azrael were impossible to shift. My forces had lost an objective to the Deathwing Terminators too as mentioned above.
I was now unable to move out and take the objectives that the Dark Angels had fallen back to take. Nothing of mine could not see the Inceptor and the Wyverns were out of range of him. I did finish off the Deathwing Knight though that had moved into the ruin near the Wyverns.
Creed was all but useless in this late game as I had no Vox-Casters left anywhere to increase his order range.
My three Leman Russ, Wyverns and a Chimera all survived the game. The Wyverns did not get shot at once. They just sat in the back out of sight and slammed down shells. The Leman Russ were durable, more so than against the Necrons. I am a bit disappointed that they have the same 3+ save that a Chimera, Wyvern and Sentinel has! Granted they are T8, like a Land Raider. But the 2+ save is so much better.
8th Edition Battle Report Summary
The below photo shows the final table, mostly. The red circles are the enemy held objectives – four in total:
