When it comes to death, there are many variations of gods that come to our mind from different cultures, since this process is an inevitable and crucial part of all our lives notwithstanding our ethnicity, race, social status, religious beliefs, etc.  

Most of us heard about one such deity: Santa Muerte, who is commonly known as a folk saint and is closely associated with Mexican el Día de Muertos or Day of the Dead. Usually she is depicted as a skeleton with traditional feminine features, long hair, flower wreath and in a bright dress. 

Despite her status among Spanish Catholics, the catholic church doesn’t accept her as an official saint since some other figures play this role in catholicism, as well as Santa Muerte’s eerie connections with witchcraft and narco cartels don’t quite fit Christian morals. 

But what do we know about the origin of the Mother of Death? 

Origin

Although Santa Muerte is an unofficial catholic saint, her roots are more complex than they seem and aren’t limited by her status among Spanish Catholics. 

There are a few main theories of where Santa Muerte comes from:

African death goddesses

And more others.

But there is no general agreement on which one is true. It can be confusing, but at the same time, it allows us to analyze and define the truth for ourselves.

Still there is one most popular theory which is related to Aztec beliefs.

As we know, Santa Muerte has the most popularity in Mexico. From the history overview, the Valley of Mexico was earlier the Aztec home before the conquest of this land by the Spanish in the early 16th century.

Before Mexican el Día de Muertos, the Aztecs had their own celebration connected to several death gods: Mictecacihuatl and Mictlantecuhtli. Few principal gods were represented as female (Mictecacihuatl) and male (Mictlantecuhtli) embodiments of death and rulers of Mictlan (underworld).

!For the remark: they are not the only ones, there was goddess Tonantzin as well, but she is related to the other catholic figure. 

One of the theories is that Mictecacihuatl and Santa Muerte are the same deity because the Spanish had to accept some Aztec customs due to their cooperation. Also, Mictecacihuatl was a dominant death deity in the Aztec pantheon, so it was important to save her figure even under a different name.

Many faces of Mother of Death

Apart from Santa Muerte’s grim image and direct relation to death, she is patient with the newbies and her devotees and has a pleasant presence and nurturing nature. 

Like all deities, Lady of Death is versatile and can be both gentle and destructive. Don’t be surprised to learn that she has a strong connection with drug traffickers and many of them honour this goddess so she gives them protection and prosperity. 

Another feature is that Mother of Death accepts all people since death doesn’t care about your social status, sexual orientation, colour of skin, gender, and any other things. She is a protector of those who are rejected by society and helps them to stay safe and find their way in life. 

But you need to keep in mind that she should be respected as any other deity and she won’t forgive your ignorance or rudeness towards her. 

How to start working with Santa Muerte

As many of us know, it is important to understand which aspects have certain deities when we start working with them. It helps us to figure out for what purposes we can contact them. 

Santa Muerte is an universal goddess who has keys to the many doors on our paths. It is no wonder, because death is ever-present and has power over all. 

When you decide that you would like to ask Santa Muerte for something, you should define your request and reach out to one of her seven colours or aspects. 

!However, if you aren’t sure which colour is right, it is fine to reach out to Santa Muerte without referring to a certain aspect of her. 

The Seven Colors of Santa Muerte 

I will give a short guide of her seven colours, so it will be easier to define which aspect is most suitable for your problem or situation. 

Niña Blanca, White Santa Muerte

Protection, cleansing, renewal, starting new projects, healing, opening new paths, punishing enemies.

Niña Violeta, Purple Santa Muerte

Magic, secret knowledge, wisdom, spiritual growth, clairvoyance, divination.

Niña Azul, Blue Santa Muerte

Partnerships, social life, human interactions (she can both harmonize and destroy relationships).

Niña Dorada, Golden Santa Muerte

Money, wealth, prosperity, fate, luck (as well as lack of money, poverty and bad luck for enemies).

Niña Roja, Red or Pink Santa Muerte

Romantic relationships, love, lust, attracting a partner (it is possible to punish unfaithful partners with Red Santa Muerte’s help).

Niña Verde, Green Santa Muerte

Winning legal cases, justice, defining truth, protection from criminals, imprisoning someone, making someone commit illegal acts, endanger someone to be robbed or assaulted. 

Niña Negra, Black Santa Muerte

Neutralizing curses, malevolent spirits, ending bad luck or all kinds of problems, protection, spiritual transformations, harming enemies.

Associations

Planetary aspects: 

Moon and Saturn (but it can vary depending on the aspect)

Plants:

Rose, rosemary, syrian rye, tobacco, marigolds, aloe

Animals: 

Owl, raven, butterfly, snake, worm

Incense: 

Rose, vanilla, sage, copal, myrrh, rosemary, aloe, palo santo

Symbols:

Scythe, skull, flower wreath, golden jewelry, scale, cloak

Tarot:

Death, Queen of Swords, Judgement, the Empress, the High Priestess, the Hierophant (but it depends on your perception as well)

Offerings

Tequila, red wine, chocolate (or any other sweets), red apples, pomegranates, fruits (especially exotic ones such as pineapples, mangoes, dragon fruits), coffee and cacao, salt, bread, flowers (mostly red or white roses), red meat, chicken hearts, candles (the colour depends on the aspect or you can choose the black one as universal), incenses.

Hades: you spend much time with this light on your face and that's why u r not thinking right (context: I've been away too much on my phone and I complained about it but I still working it, and the fact that I use too much it's actually affecting my vision lol). Get up, take your shower, and just BE. Just breath. Just stay present. No information (read), no phone, no stimulation. Just be. (Context: I have anxiety and problems to concentrate and sometimes- a lot more that I wish it was - I do things completely automatic i don't even register that I did lol, and be so long on my phone, on social media has been affecting me very negatively and I know that and He knows that too and that's why he was kind mad)

Me: okay. And I agree, I actually don't want to be in my phone even though that I continue but... can I write.. this? *sad face* please?

Today I honour our Mother of Death, Santa Muerte.

In the meantime, I would like to share some observations of working with Santa Muerte. It might help you in your practice with her, but it is a personal gnosis that can be different from yours (and this is fine). 

If you are in desperate need of urgent help with any problem, you should ask Santa Muerte. She is one of the deities who responds extremely quickly to your requests. 

Santa Muerte is perfect for getting someone or something off the ground. If you feel that some situation in your life went cold, you can ask Santa Muerte for help or a piece of advice. But you need to remember that she is the death goddess and death is about transformation. You should be ready for the dramatic changes. 

If you would like to work with Santa Muerte, you shouldn’t be greedy towards her and in general. As well as you have to be sincere with her. Don’t think you can hide your true intentions or lies from Death Itself. Even if you are interested in only materialistic things, it is better to be honest about it. However, it is not a good idea to work with her only from the desire to win a lottery, become rich, etc.

Santa Muerte is a wonderful teacher. Her wisdom is unlimited and she can give you lectures on practically all the things possible.

Santa Muerte adores compliments and sweet-talk, but it should be heartfelt. You can tell her about how beautiful she is, about how wise she is, that you respect her. Also, it is always nice to tell that you appreciate all things that she has done for you. 

I will share more observations next time, you can share yours if you work with her.

We aren’t trying to scare newcomers when we say that the path of a Death Worker is hard & often traumatic. Death in and of itself is hard, and traumatic.

When you work with the dead and the spirit of death they leave a mark on you. In my experience this path doesn’t get easier, you just get more prepared on how to handle it.

These are my tips on how to handle that as beginners:

✦ Boundaries

- decide who you can work with, and what you can handle. (Examples are: not working with children or those who died of violence)

- know your limits, take a step back if you need to

✦ Understand/Work to Understand your triggers

- this also falls under knowing your limits, but also when you understand your triggers/traumas you’ll be better suited to help others

✦ Find Community

- This practice is hard, and looking for community and friends to support you is key. Reach out to other people on this path and make those connections.

��� Come To Terms

- with familial/close death

- with death-related trauma

✦ Mourn

- let yourself cry

- let yourself mourn those you help

- let yourself miss those you lost

✦ Self-care

- take days to yourself and do things that are fun and relaxing

- you can’t help others until you’ve got your own self in order

STORY TIME: Hades Protected me :) Hi everyone, I hope yall are doing well, I went trough a LOT in uni, and maybe I'll come here to tell you about that (becausa was awful BUT a very good lesson that I was really needing). Butfor context: I was in a group in uni and they started to make jokes that, in the beginning, was fun. But then, they started to not sound as jokes anymore… like they meant it, for real. I left (a lot of problems and drama in between) and one of those girls were… I have no idea how to describe it, she looked to me with awful energy, I dont know if she was mad or envy(I feel ridiculous saying this because and dont think anyone should feel envious of me for whatever reason lol) but here what happened: after days of went to class and almost have panick attacks because of this, the feeling of her energy , this week when in class I asked Hades "please if this energy is from her, block this, protect me, and if its mine and I dont know, please protect from my own fears and thoughts"… GUYS was literally INSTANTLY, the energy? gone. The anxiety? gone. And yesterday, when I came and was just me and J in class and she came, NOTHING. I cant tell yall enought how AWFUL was, really I had never gone trought something like this, like, someone directly sending a energy like this and I feel it… when it disapeard the sensation was so strong that I was protect, like was a wall around me that I put my arms side to see if would pass LMAOOOOOO of course it would but you get me, right??? the sensation was so strong that I was like "well, let me just see it…. u know??" I thanked him so much, I really felt safe and protect ike, I cant even explain. ps: sorry if there is a lot written wrong, Im getting ready to go to uni but I really wanted to tell yall this

Bingqiu AU where Luo Binghe's the chosen village sacrifice to the evil deity who lives up the mountain.

Normally the village sends maidens, but they've more or less run out of expendable girls of the right age and, ahem, "virtues". So of course Luo Binghe's early life bad luck kicks in. In the wake of his mother's death there's no one to really care about what happens to him, he's fairly pretty, and the village leaders decide that if they dress him up like a girl the teenaged homeless kid should pass well enough. And hey, y'know, he's probably got a hard life ahead for him anyway -- dying in a brothel of some venereal disease or on the streets of exposure or starvation. At least as a sacrifice, everyone else gets to benefit from his loss! And the kid will get added to a shrine and be remembered as a hero! If anything, he should be happy about this!

Binghe is not happy about this.

But he's also a skinny underfed nobody who is easily overpowered, dressed up like a bride, and tied to a post. So. Not much he can do but wait for the evil deity to come and do whatever horrible thing he's gonna do to him.

Meanwhile, Shen Yuan is pretty sure he's been isekai'd into the over-powered hero of some kind of supernatural adventure story? He's not totally sure because he doesn't recognize the setting, but the signs are there. He's got a shrine-like base of operations (though it seems to have become corrupted/ruined, probably he has to restore it somehow), he has a very resilient and handsome new body with spiritual energy of some kind flowing through him, and a very clearly magical sword. Plus lots of neat starter powers! Though it feels like he has other abilities that have been blocked somehow? Probably he has to level up in order to access them.

When he treks out of his "base" and finds what seems to be a distressed maiden, he takes it for his beginner hero mission. The girl claims that she's been doomed to be sacrificed to an evil god. That sounds a little above Shen Yuan's pay grade for dealing with, so he unties her and decides that they had better just get out of the whole region altogether. He already packed up anything useful from his base, anticipating he might get caught up in an adventure once he left, so they follow the river away from the settlement until they reach another one.

While they travel, Luo Binghe tells Shen Yuan about the cursed deity, Shen Qingqiu, who was cast out of the heavens for slaughtering one of his brethren and has apparently being do-who-knows what to maidens from the local village in exchange for his "protection" ever since. Sounds like a real asshole! And also mid-level boss type bad guy at least. Shen Yuan hopes he doesn't have to fight him, but he probably will.

Thank goodness he found Binghe, though! Clearly the helpful little sister type! He's definitely going to require her assistance if he's going to figure out how to navigate this world and level up his skills enough to take on a god.

I always liked "dark" stuff and just felt... comforted by them, look to places like cemeterys was kind of a therapy because bring me peace, I always liked skulls, night, all things related to darkness and/or shadowns. When I started witchcraft I first worked with Selene, but I always wanted to work with a God, for a very long time a searched but... never find any who I connected with, this year I had a moment where I just cried because I missed a God, but 100% wasnt the christian god and was just so overwhelmed, when I talked to my friend to vent I said this "I think I was looking for the christian god in every god I searched about without realizing it" when I said this was that kind of moment when you be like "OOOOOHHHH I GOT IT" after this I just chilled and wasn't caring about find a god anymore (just a thing here, for a moment I thought was anubis because he AND hades are the only gods I feel connection, but when I asked was a very big NO, and when I thought about Hades I immideatly stopped because I had a toxic friend who always said how connected she felt whid hades and persephone and I was like "no, its not him because she is from G" I didnt even asked because I felt like I couldnt, because everything she likes she didnt liked share so I was like... nop"). After all of this he just appeared the same way all the others deities: I thought about him everyday and decided to research and reasearch and research and when I saw: here he was. :) this was in the middle of may

I always had very metaphorical deaths in my life and he appeared when a very long friendship was ending and I didn't know how to handle it. (my dog passed away this too)

For those of you that follow death-related deities (like Hel, Hades, Osiris, etc)

How did you come across them and what got you working with them?

I’ve been obsessed with the aesthetic of death ever since I was little (collecting dead bugs and plants and stuff) and I’ve felt very close with it as I work with Hel, but it’s becoming less about Death itself and more about the passage of time and adjusting to the changes of life. And reminding myself to live a life I want.

I mean, I still love Death aesthetics, literature and the like, but I’d like to hear how and why others work with death-related deities 🖤
