DEH- The Name Connor, who he was
The name ‘Connor’ means different things to each person in the story.
To Cynthia- it means her loving son who she watched grow up and slowly turn dark.
To Larry- it means the son he thought he gave everything to, and who still gave it all up.
To Zoe- it means the brother she has who she wished had loved her, but was really a ‘monster.’
To Heidi- as well as society, he’s just the kid who took his own life and deserves to be remembered.
And to Evan- the name Connor means the guy who he never got the chance to know. The friendship he could have had, but never did. Connor was the start of a whole new fake life for him, and they never even really knew each other.
Connor is Zoe, his crushes brother. Connor is the guy who signed his cast. Connor is the guy who took Evan’s letter. Connor is the guy who shoved Evan. Connor is the crazy kid who threw a printer. Connor is the rise and fall of everything for Evan.
And he never even knew him.
Nobody really knew Connor. In reality he didn’t have any close friends, (apart from Miguel from the book version, but I’m specifically talking about the musical version) he was drifting further and further away from his own family, and nobody really knows what happened in his head or personal life, or why he took his own life.
And the one person, the only person they think really knew him, actually helped him and is helping them remember him- didn’t know him at all. Evan’s trying to preserve memories that never even existed.
Nobody knows why Connor died. But Evan did. Of course he doesn’t know all the real, specific reasons for Connor. But out of anyone around, he’s the one who can probably relate the most. Because he was in the exact same place as Connor.
He tried to take his own life. In his letter- the one thought to be by Connor to Evan, was actually from Evan, about how alone he felt himself. People believed it as if Connor had written it, as if that’s something Connor would say. So if the letter Evan wrote, sounded just like sometbing the guy who killed himself would say- then, they must feel pretty similar.
‘Last summer, I just felt so- alone.’ ‘Did you fall? Or did you let go?’ ‘Will I ever make a sound…?’ ‘No one would even notice if I just- disappeared tomorrow.’
I am sure that is not far off from how Connor felt.
So even thought Evan never knew Connor directly or personally, he could relate to how he most likely felt…
Alone.

I NEED TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR OPTIONS OF MUSICALS RN RN RN
IM GONNA ASSUME YOU MEANT OPINIONS SO LEMME LIST ALL MUSICALS IM AWARE OF AND MY OPINIONS.
Warning: rant ahead
Be More Chill: currently what I’m obsessed with at the moment. I get why people don’t like it but it’s just very charming to me okay 😭 I just think the characters are fun, the concept is interesting and the songs are just bangers. And maybe I slightly relate to it okay. The costumes are…questionable. But I think it’s super colorful which I love. My dream role is Christine. She is literally me.
Beetlejuice: this is what me and my oldest sister bonded over when she was always hiding in her room cause she was so introverted. We used to watch the animatics and we would sing “say my name”. So I only have good memories! We even planned to see it on Broadway except COVID happened abd it closed so :( but I love Beetlejuice and the songs!
Into The Woods: THIS IS WHAT GOT ME INTO MUSICALS. I remember I would rewatch the 2014 version constantly and sing the songs. Little red riding hood is my fav and always will be and “Your Fault” is just *chefs kiss* yes.
Sound of Music: I performed in this in 3rd grade at my older sisters high school. Now this was fun. I didn’t really get the concept of nazis so I was just like “why is Leisels boyfriend now evil :(“ so uh yeah- but really good musical!!
Hairspray: the songs are a bop and seaweed was my favorite.
Heathers: I’ve never watched the original movie but I have seen clips. Songs are great!! I always liked the costumes, even if they are stagnant throughout the whole show. My friend got into it so now I’m getting back into it. I remember I loved the animatics, even though I didn’t know what was going on half the time.
Dear Evan Hansen: ….okay. I remember I was super into the animatics. But then I learned the plot and was like: 😨 so
Hamilton: my oldest sister was super into it and I remember 6 year old me asked her “so what’s it about?” While we were driving to nyc and got a very long summary. I also used to watch many animatics and szinn was my fav. I do actually like it. I think it’s a bold concept that somehow worked and LMM did a great job at utilizing RAP and THE FOUNDING FATHERS.
Wicked: so I actually saw this on Broadway when I was 6 and I completely forgot everything. But I do remember when Glinda came down in those bubbles and I thought that was the coolest thing ever.
Theory Of Relativity: a modern musical that my school actually did a production of. Super fun! It’s a song cycle which I’m not super into but I liked the songs.
The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals: not Broadway but god DID I LOVE THIS. The characters are super interesting, I love the idea of a musical apocalypse. The fact every song was a “villain song” was so cool and the jokes killed me.
Nerdy Prudes Must Die: I love a good ol underdogs rise up story. Until the underdogs commit a felony <3 i feel like there would be no songs I would skip except “dirty girl” just cause…yeah. But I absolutely loved the characters! I thought Ruth and Richie deserved better. Grace is crazy but girl really was all, “It was an act of god!! 😇” NO IT WASNT.
Anyways. That’s everything. I love musicals. I think they’re very nice and I seriously wanna act in more

I have noticed this phenomenon that is truly bizarre to me of like. All of the fandom animatic creators I watched in middle school shifting their focus to OC content. And like I remember when the shift started happening, it was around 2018/2019, about the time I was exiting that era of my life anyway, but when I go to look them up again, it’s still like. A new OC animatic every 2-3 months and nothing else. So not only is the content different but it’s also WAY less frequent. And there’s nothing WRONG with either of these things, doing more OC work OR updating less frequently but the way the shift happened all at once with multiple different creators is just so baffling like. What HAPPENED to the animatic industry?? It was BOOMING back in the day, and now it’s just. Not really producing any fandom content anymore. I want someone to explain this to me the way they would explain how medieval trade routes led to various historical events. Educate me.

i cannot make rhyme or reason out of the selection of songs that got cut in the dear evan hansen movie adaptation. like, yeah the movie is already over 2 hours long so they had to cut *something*, but they cut all the momentum building ensemble numbers. "does anybody have a map" is out, so now the movie cold opens onto evan's first solo and it is forty fucking minutes before anyone besides him sings a note. "Good For You" is out too, which like, actively makes the plot more incomprehensible, because its like the only song in the 2nd half that has anything happen in it?? But then they also add that horrible time wasting Alana song, AND a reprise of it later on, they cut so many songs but the pace is still so obstinately sluggish.
another theory is that the movie is a nepotism production and they just cut every song that doesn't have ben platt sing most of it, but then they also kept requiem for some reason, which is a complete dead end in terms of character conflict for this version of the story. like, oh, the murphy's are having a tough time processing their grief for a kid we don't know and don't get to know as his memory is rewritten in front of our very eyes. this movie makes less sense the more i think about it.

My bizarre real-person headcanon: Josh Groban and Ben Platt are mortal nemeses. Here's the timeline behind this theory, beginning with the known and branching off into the possible future. 2017: Josh Groban makes his Broadway debut in Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet to much critical acclaim. At the Tony Awards, Ben Platt, starring in Dear Evan Hansen, wins Best Actor and Dear Evan Hansen beats Natasha/Pierre for Best Musical. 2023: Josh Groban makes a triumphant return to Broadway, headlining a revival of Sweeney Todd. Surely this will be his year? Nope. Ben Platt's limited run production of Parade transfers to Broadway, making his own triumphant return to Broadway after a hiatus of the same length. Neither wins the Tony Award this year (J. Harrison Ghee does), but Parade wins Best Revival of a Musical over Sweeney Todd. Later in 2023: Josh Groban goes full method and immerses himself in the murderous, vengeful instincts of Sweeney Todd. Revenge against Ben Platt will be his! But he can't be too obvious about it. He's playing the long game. 2028: Surprise! There's a revival of Phantom of the Opera announced! Both Ben Platt and Josh Groban are considered as potential Phantoms. Unknown to anyone, Josh Groban has been perfecting his own Phantom-like skills of appearing and disappearing into thin air, throwing his voice, and murder. Oh yeah, and he plays the pipe organ. He gets the role! But wait, what's this? Hugh Jackman was eaten by a crocodile mere weeks before he was supposed to headline the new Broadway production of The Greatest Showman? Ben Platt heroically steps in to save the day and takes the title role! He wins the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical, but not Best New Musical (the critics say, "We love Ben Platt but this show is clearly just a vehicle for Hugh Jackman [RIP].") The Phantom revival wins Best Musical, but something terrible happens at the Tony Awards! There's a technical glitch when the Phantom performance is due to start and they move it to the end of the awards ceremony. But right as everyone's marveling at the artistry of the production at the delayed performance, something Totally Unpredicted happens. The chandelier crashes... INTO BEN PLATT!!! 2030: Ben Platt survives the chandelier attack but he loses his entire memory and has to relearn everything, including how to sing! He can no longer recall the moment that the chandelier crashed into him-- nor the moment that Josh Groban looked at him from the stage and mouthed 'Long live the king!' In a startling and bold act, Ben Platt returns to Broadway in a one man autobiographical show about living with amnesia and relearning to perform. He wins the Best Actor Tony Award! Josh Groban is away doing Phantom in Europe. 2040: There's a high profile immersive revival of Les Miserables on Broadway! The producers consider both Ben Platt and Josh Groban for Jean Valjean. But Josh Groban gives off such an in intense murderous energy when they find him in the same room as Ben Platt that they get a brilliant idea and offer him the role of Javert and Platt as Valjean. The production is a hit. The tension between Platt and Groban is off the charts. When it's time for the Tony Awards, both are nominated for Best Actor in a Musical (ala Colm Wilkinson and Terrence Mann in the original Broadway production). On the day of the Tony Awards, an astonishing thing happens: Platt and Groban TIE for the Best Actor in a Musical Award! The crowd goes wild! Everyone is cheering! The theatre... the cheers... it triggers something long-buried in Ben Platt's mind. Suddenly, he remembers the night the chandelier fell on him at the 2028 Tony Awards.... Josh Groban was looking right at him as it happened.... Ben Platt snaps and begins to clobber Josh Groban onstage. In his fit of rage, he doesn't see Josh Groban pull out a gun. Is this finally the end of this age old rivalry? BUT WAIT, WHAT'S THIS? IT'S J. HARRISON GHEE (SNUBBED STAR OF THE REIMAGINED REVIVAL OF LA CAGE AUX FOLLES) WITH A STEEL CHAIR!!!! At least, this is what I imagine.

✨️TWEEK TWEAK HEADCANONS✨️
trigger warning: mentions of meth addiction and rehab
• Tweek William Tweak
• He/Him
• Born on August 17th, 2004
• 5'9"
• Gay
• Practices boxing with Clyde. He's great at it. Although he usually ends up hurting him accidently because he's really fast and really strong from all the meth in his body.
• Speaking of, he didn't find out he was being drugged until he was 17. Tricia was noticing how jittery and strange Tweek was and jokingly said he was acting like a meth addict she saw on TV. This got him thinking and panicking and he actually got a drug test online for his coffee. After this, he had a panic attack from a combination stress, disbelief and the caffeine and meth in his body. He later confronted his parents, and this led to him getting into a physical fight with Richard. Tweek was of course grounded until he turned 18 and he moved out as soon as he could.
• Had to go to rehab for almost a year to get him off the meth and then another 2 months for the caffeine addiction. He doesn't drink coffee anymore now. Mostly drinks water and chamomile tea. Maybe liquor if he's at a party.
• Clyde sends him conspiracy theory TikToks to fuck with him and he believes all of them. Craig talks him out of most of them but not all. He actually participates in the conspiracy theories, he started a YouTube channel talking about paranormal activity and government conspiracies. He kind of got into astronomy too but only because he wants to know if aliens actually exist.
• Still has nightmares about the underpants gnomes. He stayed up for 3 days straight one time trying to prove to Craig they're real. Usually the nightmares cause him to kick and toss in his sleep. He's accidently kicked Craig out of the bed so many times. Also he has insomnia so he hardly gets any sleep.
• Bites his fingernails and lip sometimes until it bleeds. Tricia paints his nails and has to redo them all the time because the polish usually gets chipped off within days. Also scratches at himself a lot.
• Kelly, Tweek and Firkle are a theatre nerd trio and all in the drama club. Kelly is the best singer and dancer, Tweek is best at acting, especially emotional, Broadway type acting and impressions and Firkle is good at writing screenplays.
• He's a big fan of musicals too, he went to see Wicked with Craig and literally cried. He also likes RENT, Dear Evan Hansen, Mamma Mia!, Heathers and like every Disney musical in existence.
• Has really bad acne and eczema
• Loves popcorn but it gets stuck in his teeth easily and he spends like an hour trying to get it out.
• Most of Tweek's playlist is Glee covers of early 2010's pop songs. His favorite one is Rachel and Sunshine's cover of "Telephone" by Lady Gaga. He generally likes those kinds of songs by Katy Pery, Bruno Mars, Justin Bieber. He just heavily prefers the Glee covers because he used to watch the show all the time and the covers are more nostalgic.
• Diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder. ADHD, insomnia and mild depression. He's been prescribed Klonopin, Adderall and a few other medicines but he avoids taking them because he hates swallowing pills. Craig kind of has to force him to take his medication.
• Bought a whole bunch of fidget spinners and keeps like 2 of them on him at all times.
• Laughs like a hyena.
• Does not wash his hair in the shower until it gets so dry it's on the very brink of death. It's not even on purpose, he just fucking forgets until the last minute.
• Very bad at focusing and remembering assignments, his grades are terrible. The only reason he can remember his lines when he's acting is because he gets into a specific emotional/mental state based on the character. Homework is just something tedious and long with a lot of rules that he's being forced to do so it's much harder for him to focus.
• Has really bruised knees, a lot of cuts and scrapes on his body, and bandages on his arms
• Terrifying when he's pissed off, he has the highest chance of accidently killing someone during a fight. Not just because he's strong, he's just that unhinged when he's mad.
• Cartman calls him "Twink" instead of Tweek to fuck with him. This usually results in Tweek punching him.
• Fucking hates his name but doesn't want to go through the process of changing it.
• Plays the saxophone, trumpet, and violin.
• Best friends with Butters and Kenny. They all have similar home situations and shitty parents. Also Kenny introduced him to weed to calm his nerves. He doesn't smoke it a lot but like when he's really stressed and his medication isn't helping.
• Wears Craig's hat sometimes and chews on the ends.
• Tweek always liked Craig, he was just scared to come out. Especially since he thought Craig was straight
• Likes doing arts and crafts, but he usually makes a mess. He is so bad with glue, it got stuck in his hair a few times.
i love tweek sm he's my baby 😭😭💖
Tumblr media
also i cannot be the only one who made the comparison of "twink" to "tweek"💀
someone else thought of that, right?
right?
LIKE BRO IT CANT JUST BE ME-
Clyde Donavan is up next!
if anyone has any headcanon ideas, my dms are always open! feel free to send any feedback :)
drink water, stay safe, and have a goodnight!

don’t forget to do your daily clicks! in addition to palestinian support and relief, there are so many other causes that arab.org has to support. i know esp as a minor without a solid banking situation that it can be easy to feel helpless when you can’t donate, but this is something meaningful without having to pay money that truly makes a difference!

Epic the musical
An adaption of Homer’s Odyssey
It incorporates anime and video games elements
Its currently being released in “sagas” and 7 out of 9 are out now!
Honestly If you want more information about it, send me more asks! I’d be happy to talk about it more
Legally Blonde
A movie to musical adaptation DONE RIGHT
Suchhh a feel good show
Follows Elle Woods, a presumably “dumb” blonde who goes to Harvard to get her boyfriend back
Feminist
Again such a banger musical
The Outsiders
Based on the book of the same name
A brand new musical that won Best Musical this year!

It brings so many emotions and the cast is FANTASTIC
If you have more questions I HIGHLY recommend you talk to my bestest moot @sondheim-girly since The Outsiders is their jam

Hello! As y'all probably know by now, musicals are a BIG interest of mine. So I decided to make a list of all musicals I ever listened to. Mainly because I like categorizing stuff.
Feel free to use this to recommend me something (I'm trying to make to 100 musicals lol), or use this as a recommendation list for yourself (I tried to put my favorites on top, but don't take the placements to heart)
Before we start, some ground rules: I'm focusing on stage productions and concept albuns. There might be *some* movies. I'm not counting Disney or this would be twice the size.
Also, I count "listened to" as in "I listened to most/all of the songs and know enough of the plot".
LIST:
S TIER: These are my general faves. I like most of the songs and know the plot back to back. Can probably talk for hours about them.
• Hamilton (My favorite by far. Nothing can compare. Best thing ever. I'll never get tired of it. Gets it's own tier)
• Jesus Christ Superstar (not even religious, but man, this has me on a chokehold)
• Epic: the musical (not finished but it's alredy good like that)
• Falsettos
• Spies Are Forever (criminally underrated, if not any other, watch this one, it's free on YouTube)
• Hadestown
• Warriors
• In the Heights
• Twisted
• Legally Blonde
• Company
• Les Miserables
A TIER: Really good musicals! Like 9/10 stuff. I think most of them are in this category.
• The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals
• Come From Away
• Dear Evan Hansen
• A Chorus Line
• Heathers
• The Great Gatsby
• Ryde The Cyclone
• Be More Chill
• Waitress
• The Count Of Mount Cristo
• Into the Woods
• The Unnoficial Bridgerton Musical (no, I'm not proud of myself. In my defense, it's kinda of a banger)
• Tick tick boom
• The Last 5 Years
• A Very Potter Trilogy (can't separate them)
• Chicago
• Sweeney Todd
• Something Rotten
• A new brain
• Newsies
• Grease
• Bare
• Nerdy Prudes Must Die
• Wicked
• Six
B TIER: Also good musicals, I just don't listen to them as much as the others and don't have many opinions about it.
• Anastasia
• Beetlejuice
• The Prom
• 1776
• Some Like It Hot
• Mean girls
• Joseph Tecnhocolor Coat
• Starship
• The Lighting Thief
• 36 Questions
• Mamma Mia
• The Mad Ones
• Rent
• Matilda
• Carrie the musical
• Firebringer
• 21 chump street
C TIER: They're fine. Might have some bangers, but I probably wouldn't think of them immediately when asked. Or maybe there's not enough content to justify putting them higher.
• Black Friday
• Ordinary Days
• Spongebob Squarepants: the new musical
• Shrek the musical
• The Theory of Relativity
• Catch Me If You Can
• Dr Horrible Sing-along
• The book of mormon
• Beloved King (only what's available on YouTube/Spotify)
• 35MM
• Holy Musical B@man
• Trail to Oregon
• Avenue Q
• Me & My Dick

DEH- An Analysis of the scene before ‘Words Fail,’
Looking back to the bootlegged version of the OBC I once watched on YouTube, Ben Platt delivers the line “We weren’t friends” with a small gasp followed by breathless sobs.
Those three words alone “we weren’t friends,” are saying so much.
The only time we see Connor and Evan together when Connor was alive, was when he pushed him to the ground, signed his cast, and took the letter. They weren’t friends at all. But even just admitting that for Evan is so hard. If he admits everything, he knows he’ll lose the family we wish he had, his girlfriend- and just admitting they weren’t friends, losing an imaginary friendship like that.
Evan would have wanted a friendship like that so badly, and making everything up about what they had together felt good- like he actually had someone. As if someone really did come to to get him when he broke his arm, even though no one really did.
With this, he’s also admitting that because he, himself wrote the letter- he’s the one who feels alone, and wants to disappear.
The acting is impeccable. You can feel the intense anxiousness and sadness of the scene just by the way Ben Platt, or anyone playing Evan Hansen talks and sings- you can tell he’s crying by his voice, you can tell he hates doing this so much, he doesn’t even know what to say. You can tell he’s extremely anxious based on the fast pace and occasional volume or harsh syllables.
He’s going to lose everything he ever wanted, and going to cause his family to lose all their hope and happiness just through the words “we weren’t friends.” He doesn’t want to hurt Connor’s family, of course, but he is because he has to. He just wanted to do the right thing and help from the beginning.
But now he knows this is the right thing, even if it ruins it all for him.

Hyperspecific poll for opinions on fandoms (as opposed to the last one I did which was relationship with fandom as a whole)
Some explanations
my theory of the Tonys having anti-teen bias is evidenced by snubs of various kinds for shows like Starmites, The Lightning Thief and Be More Chill and Dear Evan Hansen only swept imho despite this because (despite how its own movie would end up turning out) it's kinda the Broadway equivalent of an Oscarbait movie
the thing about changing the HP-related things' names is e.g. the only reason the irl quidditch league or w/e should have changed the sport name to quadball is the adjustment needed for Muggles to play and since in concept and using-house-symbols the sortinghatchats system still shows its HP influence, it shouldn't have dropped house labels
what I mean about the Eureka thing is that I have a theory that due to things like when Eureka was founded, the kind of people it attracts and the endogamy implied by its secrecy, not a lot of people in town know much of anything about Aspergers/"high-functioning" autism/"low-support" autism despite how many people in town would probably test as having it so only a case of autism as severe as pre-time-jump Kevin would register to most Eurekans as autism (and he didn't get cured he just got higher-functioning/lower-support, still doesn't explain how a timeline jump changed that though)
She-Hulk's show not only deserved more seasons but longer ones, think of what it could have got on a network instead of a streaming service

Christmas Carol-cember, Day 14
From muppets to ponies to lost television media, it seems A Christmas Carol fits very well into the musical genre. But obviously, a great musical is only as good as the songwriters providing the songs.
So when the writing/directing duo behind “Daddy’s Home 1 & 2,” “Hot Tub Time Machine,” and “We’re The Millers” signed a deal with Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds and got Apple to pony up $75 million in the bidding war, they needed songwriters who could make some bangers for their holiday musical comedy.
Tumblr media
Enter the hottest songwriting darlings of musical theatre: Benj Patel and Justin Paul. Two guys who met at the University of Michigan with a love of musicals so strong, they wrote their own called “Edges" while completing their Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in musical theatre. But their true accomplishment was the 2015 musical “Dear Evan Hansen” that shot them into the stratosphere of success after they won the Tony for Best Musical and Best Original Score and later won a Grammy just as Hollywood came a-knocking. They made a splash with writing the songs to 2016’s “La La Land” that earned them an Oscar win for Best Original Song before they truly became Hollywood darlings with 2017’s super hit “The Greatest Showman.” They also won a Emmy for writing songs for the Hulu show “Only Murders in the Building,” making them the newest editions to the EGOT crowd.
Naturally, when you can get these guys to write your musical, you’ve got a guaranteed success.
Right?
In the modern day, the Ghosts of Christmas Past (Sunita Mani), Present (Will Ferrell) and Yet To Come (voiced by Tracy Morgan but played by NBA star Loren G Woods) still perform the annual duty of picking out a miserly human every Christmas Eve and force them to change their ways for the betterment of mankind.
They celebrate every converted human with an elaborate music number.
youtube
And before you ask, yes, they openly acknowledge it’s weird but never explain why they do it other than “just cause."
Although the Ghost of the Present is eligible for retirement, he refuses to step down until he finds that one human he can change who will have a meaningful impact on the world. Enter Clint Briggs (Ryan Reynolds), a selfish media consultant who will do and say anything to stir the pot as well as get ahead in his career, even going so far as to tell his niece to post an unflattering video of her opponent to win class president, much to the displeasure of his Executive Vice President Kimberly (Octavia Spencer).
Realizing this guy is just what he’s looking for, he makes the pitch to his boss, Jacob Marley (Patrick Page), but is warned that Briggs is “Unredeemable.” Unwavering, the ghosts prepare to haunt Briggs, only to learn that Briggs is not too hip to just follow the traditional story beats and finds that it might not be just him that needs to make a change, forcing the Ghost of the Present to reflect on what he really wants...
All done with music numbers that the characters keep recognizing is weird that they do them.
Hope you liked that joke cause they will beat it into your head that it’s weird for there to be music numbers in a musical.
But only for the sequences with the ghosts as they establish the songs are happening within the world of the movie, whereas the music numbers amongst the living are happening inside their minds or as a metaphorical speech given at a convention.
youtube
At least I thought that was the idea until Octavia Spencer attempts a reprise of her own song near the film’s end until Ryan Reynolds cuts her off.
Taking a moment to step back let’s drop some film theory to give you an understand why this running joke bothers me so.
In the medium of film or television, there are two modes of sound that connect to the implementation of music or sound effects.
Tumblr media
Diagetic Sound is sound that occurs within the world of the story and we can see its source. Whether it’s a baby crying, a car driving past, a conversation between two people or a vinyl record set on a record player, the sound we hear is the same sound the characters in the narrative hear.
Non-Diagetic Sound is sound that is not happening inside the world of the story. This is usually narration but it's most commonly film scores as not everyone can hear the swelling of music happening around them unless directly shown to be, such as the Walkman music from “Guardians of the Galaxy."
Musicals are a tricky act because it’s not so simple to explain whether they are one or the other. For the most part, it’s widely accepted that songs in musicals are non-diagetic. An inner monologue given out in song that represents what the characters are feeling or meant to serve a symbolic gesture behind their actions or words.
youtube
Take “Popular” from Wicked. While Galinda is having this conversation with Elphaba about giving her a makeover, we the audience can see her singing, the musical imparts the suggestion that the singing is an internal gesture that is made manifest in song for the audience to hear. The lyrics are a metaphor for the situation and the song is Galindo's internal thoughts.
Of course that’s not to say songs can’t be diagetic in a musical.
“Million Dollar Quartet” specifically makes it clear the songs performed do come from the cast as they are performing their songs within a recording studio. The songs serve both a symbolic gesture while clearly being connected to the world within the musical.
youtube
“Spirited” is trying to have it’s cake and eat it too by employing both modes to suggest the music numbers are diagetic and non-diagetic, but it seems to be at odds with itself.
It tries to play itself as funny by poking fun of itself for being a musical….while indulging in elaborate music numbers with complex choreography, colorful set pieces and big bombastic songs that feel right at home on a Broadway stage.
It’s funny once when the movie opens with a music number and a random intern openly asks why everyone is singing before he is told it's just what they do. Ryan Reynolds interrupts music numbers or makes snarky comments how he could perform an elaborate dance number, even one music number that was cut for time plays over the end credits when the joke for that scene was Marley giving Present what he wanted to avoid a music number.
Tumblr media
Even during an emotional ballad from Will Ferrell where that same intern from the beginning whispers “What the heck is going on?” It just takes me out of the musical and whatever feeling they want out of me as it slams to a halt.
Contrast that with “Spamalot” where the songs remind you that this is a musical, skewering itself relentlessly but never losing its identity. Such as the number “The Song That Goes Like This,” where Lancelot and the Lady of the Lake perform this duet together, all while calling out the cliche of that kind of musical number in the lyrics or pointing out their own shortcomings to hit specific keys.
youtube
It’s the anti-musical musical that still has enough respect for its audience even when it’s taking the piss out of them.
The sad thing is, all that was me speaking to what I got the most worked up about this film.
Because it’s not completely bad, there’s plenty here that’s worth giving a glowing recommendation that I was enjoying.
Tumblr media
Ryan Reynolds still remains his usual smart-mouth self that has boosted his career since “Deadpool” but he shows impressive range as a singer (even if there were a few moments I could have sworn I heard auto-tune alteration yet on the soundtrack, there is no alteration) as well as his physicality for the complex choreography created by Emmy-nominated Chloé Arnold and her team, Ava Bernstine-Mitchell and Martha Nichols. Coupling that was Will Ferrell, clearly having understood the assignment as he too shows some impressive dance moves and singing that feels like it comes from the heart, even if some of his humor is still screaming loudly. But he balances that screaming at the top of his lungs with pathos and a well timed retort bouncing off of Ryan Reynolds humor.
What’s more, their chemistry actually works. Even when the ghosts are going through the motions of showing Briggs his past, Present sees Briggs is deeply uncomfortable having to face a traumatic moment and supports him while Briggs recognizes Present's desire to experience the world again and helps him to step out of his shell when he recognizes a connection between him and Kimberly.
Tumblr media
And they sell it! That bromance feels genuine and if the songs weren’t part of the film, their chemistry would still carry the movie.
As for the songs themselves, they’re really good. So good it’s why I’m annoyed every time the film keeps calling itself out on them.
One main reason why Pasek and Paul are great songwriters is because they know the conventions of musical theatre and are very familiar with what appeals to people. “That Christmas Morning Feeling” is the kind of big flashy modern musical number that gets people to cheer in the cheap seats and usually shows up on Good Morning America. “Bringin’ Back Christmas” is the kind of jazzy dance number that would have been right at home in the big brass and swing musicals like Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes.” “Good Afternoon,” while on the crass side, you get the feeling the two took a lot of inspiration from the playful bounciness of the Sherman Brothers.
youtube
The songs are the highlight, even if one or two of them overstay their welcome (“Unredeemable” did that for me, as well as “Do A Little Good” though by then, I just wanted the movie to be over with). But they’re very strong and hold on their own, which is why I find it so frustrating the script has to come off as “witty” to interrupt itself with snide comments about its own songs.
I really dug the overarching modern themes of cancel culture and the online trigger outrage that is rampant and often exploited by companies for profit. Even the whole concept of the Ghosts expecting to scare people into forcing a change is taken into an interesting place as Briggs says that people don’t really change overnight, but it takes real time and effort for people to make that choice to stop being an ass. Heck, it’s not even seeing a vision of his future that really forces a change from him, he outright says that “sure, I’m gonna feel bad for a few days but then I’m gonna get over it. That’s my job.” What forces a change is the bond he builds with the Ghost of Christmas Present and his willingness to be there for him when he recognizes it’s too much.
It’s a genuinely compelling argument without dissing on Charles Dickens but making a modern point in personal growth. Changing yourself takes work, but it helps to have people to support you.
Tumblr media
I liked that. It’s not necessarily an open embrace of Dickens nor does it reinvent the wheel, but in this age of post-irony, it clearly has put thought into itself.
Moments like that clearly show there was an effort to insert sincerity into the script. I just keep being pulled out of the narrative every time they do a music number and call attention to how odd the musical cliches are.
As I said above, a musical lives within its own logic. If your narrative is to acknowledge it and move on, fine. "Rocko's Modern World" made that joke and it's funny every time I see that gag.
youtube
But this film keeps calling attention to that cliche and it gets tiring, especially when Will Ferrell does this emotional ballad that showcases superb camerawork and choreography with people holding lights and creating patterns with it…only to be offset by some dude watching who interrupts the song with a snide comment.
I didn’t outright loathe “Spirited,” but by the time the movie was over, I was so annoyed with it, I wanted it to be done and over with so I could move on. Which is a shame because there is plenty here that is worth watching. The cast do a fantastic job, especially Ryan Reynolds who clearly knows how to build rapport with his co-stars whether they are Will Ferrell or Hugh Jackman, the songs stand on their own and are infectious ear worms.
But with a sense of self-aware snark that grinds against the sincerity the film is trying to present, it just comes off as irritatingly hollow at the wrong times. Like driving in a fancy car with superb sound quality and smooth driving but every time you hit the brakes, there’s this awful screeching sound coming from the bottom front of the car that you worry might snap the brake lines and send it careening off.
But if you’re not bothered? Hey, I say go for it, just make sure you’re not going over 50 when you do so.
“Spirited” is available for streaming on Apple TV+
Next week, we’re going to focus on a different theme; whether the story still holds weight even when the characters are aware of Charles Dickens and the cliches.
For that? I think I might call a Doctor...

One thing that doesn't make sense in Dear Evan Hansen is that Connor took his own life while he had Evan's letter.
Like, what did he wanted people to think?
Did he wanted to make people believe that his death was Evan's fault (I find this quite improbable, because no one would read that letter and think that Evan was guilty of anything)?
Did he wanted to people to realise that Evan wrote that letter to "tease" him and blame Evan (because no one would have predicted that someone else would pretend to be your bestie after your death)?
EDIT: Did he wanted people to think that Evan was his boyfriend so Evan would suffer from homophobia or discrimination for trying to make him upset with that letter (extremely improbable)??
Didn't he think about that letter?? Was he too lazy or to tired to do something about it??
Does anyone knows the answer to this (or knows a theory that makes sense)? I'm really curious
(Maybe this is explained in the book but I haven't read it)
