I love in the early seasons how sam and dean switch their perceptions of john. when sam is so pissed at him and finds every occasion to bring up how john wronged them and dean pushes back defending him, but then suddenly john dies. and he's sam's dad again. but now dean resents him. and it could be boring but it's not. because they both mourn in such different ways, and in both cases it serves their character.
and it's like they can never hate him at the same time. hating the father is something you take turns for, you can't hate him both at once because somebody needs to love him still

something so visceral about that moment when dean looks his nineteen year old father in the eye and you see absolutely everything. this is the man he could only ever disappoint who he was never enough for who punished him needlessly for nothing and who left him stranded and alone for twenty seven years of his life. but he is only nineteen and standing here right now he could have a whole other future. where he is kind and loving. and dean looks him in the eye and hands him a journal and says please write your own story. i am letting you go. jesus christ

Dean and Mary | SPN 2.20
Some thoughts about this scene under the break...
There's so much to unpack in this episode. I love how the story progressively reveals clues that this djinn-induced fantasy is not an ideal wish world: John's death, references to Dean being an alcoholic cad, the spectre of the young woman imprisoned by the djinn, Dean and Sam's estrangement, and the deaths of all the people they had saved as hunters.
Dean's seeming alcoholism is a handy plot device to keep others from questioning his odd behavior. And, especially with JDM not guest starring, I understand that John's death is a convenient way to explain his absence, and the story would naturally move on to the other plot points. His death is downplayed since it's natural instead of supernatural.
But while there may have been practical reasons to tell the story this way, as a fan invested heavily in Dean and John's relationship, I do find Dean's (as scripted: "that's great" !!) reaction surprisingly unbothered. Given that till now we've seen Dean wanting the family to be together at all costs, it's interesting to me that here with his Mom alive and presiding over his safe and happy home, he doesn't seem to miss John being present at all, or worried that Mary is alone. It gives me a lot of headcanon fodder, especially since in later seasons they show that Mary and John's relationship was at times rocky. This world was formed by the wish of Dean's inner child, a desire for a time before he lost unconditional love and safety, and how fascinating to find that John isn't in it.

I know it’s been said but I can’t stop thinking about chuck saying his next book is “a little Vonnegut” in 4x18 and dean going “slaughterhouse five Vonnegut or cat’s cradle Vonnegut?”
like imagine you write two dozen paperbacks about Dean Fucking Winchester of all people and then he hits you with “oh you mean the war ptsd one or the daddy issues one?” what do you even say to that. how do you respond with a straight face.

"Skinny Love" by Bon Iver // Dean Winchester and John Winchester
So, @starzsam did a wincest webweave to Skinny Love and I promptly went "okay but you know what spn ship fits Skinny Love even better?" So, here's the deanjohn version.
And because I'm very proud of how I matched the first bit of lyrics up to each scene, let me decode it for anyone who doesn't recognize the screenshots:
"And I told you to be patient" - "Scarecrow" - John tells Dean (and Sam) to stop looking for him.
"And I told you to be fine" - "Salvation" - Dean tells John to get out if anything goes wrong because he's no use to them dead. John tells Dean "same to you."
"And I told you to be balanced" - "Something Wicked This Way Comes" - John tells Dean that he was supposed to watch Sam the entire time and never leave.
"And I told you to be kind" - "In My Time of Dying" - John tells Dean to take care of Sam.
Anyway, this can be read as Dean/John or Dean & John, whichever makes you happier.

in the true spn that is not beholden to actors, Dean is the spitting image of Mary and Mary is the spitting image of Deanna, hence making Dean also the spitting image of his namesake such that it makes both John and Samuel resent Dean for haunting them each with the image of their dead wife. Sam on the other hand got the genetic scramble in which he looks nothing like either parent but instead, perhaps, some distant relative. Which makes it easier for John to actually look at Sam. When they argue they get in each other’s faces while John can barely stand to look at Dean. When Dean gets in between them the fight goes out of John etc etc. tho, as I’ve said before in my defense for blond Dean as a concept, it would be delicious for both Sam and John to have very dark brown hair as a uniting physical feature while Dean is the blond one like blinding beacon reminding everyone of Mary’s existence, she was here, Dean is proof of that, he is her ghost

I cant find it now but that one post that's like "John wasn't missing he was just avoiding them." And like damn it really is crazy to remember that thats what was actually happening. Dean dedicated 22 years of his life to John where he practically lived and breathed by the code of John Winchester. And he couldn't even get a note or a phone call. And even his reasoning that he disappeared to protect them doesn't really hold weight when you think about that a.) Sam and Dean were still pursuing the demon anyway and b.) when John explains that they would hold him back Dean immediately aquiesces.
Not to mention the utter hypocrisy of it all. Sam is practically disowned for "abandoning his family" when he left for Stanford and yet John gets to disappear without a word and not pick up his phone for months.
I feel like ppl like to point to Sam leaving for stanford as the root of Deans abandonment issues and overlook the fact that John just up and vanished on Dean one day. Like no wonder Dean feels the need to lock Sam down like Sam might vanish the moment he has his back turned.
