descending into deadlochposting on main i don't even care. this show is SO GOOD. i think the thing that really stuck with me throughout every episode is how committed it is to not fucking up women, and especially women of color, just to have a Plot Point + for Emotional Resonance!!! every woman on this show gets an ending that feels earned. (and yes that does include margaret carruthers.) there is just so much love woven into this narrative but they still manage to capture the grim miserable reality of patriarchy without EVER reducing a female character we care about to a Murder Victim or having her horrifically brutalized as an ending!!!! like holy shit, guys, it's actually fucking possible! you can create horror blended perfectly with humor and never actually fuck women over!!!
and yeah actually as a woc it felt really fucking good to watch a show where i got to see women of color (aleyna and tammy and sharelle and miranda and faye my beloved <333) just thrive and be silly and stupid and terrible and also lovable. and also, oh my god, revolutionary, NOT GET MURDERED, even though this is literally a fckin murder show!!! i said to my dad like midway through the series that i just got this sense the show understood how goddamn hard it is to watch television sometimes waiting for that character you love, who looks like you and has life experiences that resonate with you, to get killed, or to be treated like she's not important, and how dedicated it is to not just killing off women for shock value. every woman in this show mattered and had meaning and dimension.
because seriously, SO MANY INCREDIBLE WOMEN!!! abby with her perfect little haircut driving off into the sunset saying Of Course She Knows She's Right About Forensics. aleyna and her husband, her whole heart!!!! vanessa who in a lesser show would have been reduced to The Bad Woman, The Bigot, but we are shown how she has been abused and mistreated by men and how that's so informed her perspective + her genuine love for her son! sharelle who lays down the hard truths, who calls them out -- "all this civility but no fucking community" !!! miranda who learns that she doesn't want blood money from a woman who looks down on her cousin! tammy who is literally just all about that footy club the entire time even as men are being murdered and that's honestly so real of her. skye o'dwyer who perfectly captures that Emotionally Unavailable Dad energy except she's a lesbian and i love her. nadiyah who is Trying Her Best :) And Gritting Her Teeth About It :) faye who has no god damn patience for margaret carruthers and all kinds of blunt determined love for her niece and her daughter. vic who throws herself under the bus because she's just so determined to protect anyone she can after the women in this town protected her and kept her secret for so long!!! cath who parents her emotions and is definitely relentless in her guilting but also so relentless in her love. MARGARET CARRUTHERS WHO EXEMPLIFIES SHITTY RICH WHITE WOMAN. and of fucking course, the legends, the buddy-cop duo of all time, dulcie and eddie, who are just perpetually going around like this
Tumblr media
except it's not even working because eddie chewed the leash off.
favorite show of the year by far. so so happy about it. rotating it joyfully in my brain for the next week, probably longer.

My favourite fics that I've written!
I've got 100 public OFMD fics, and one each for LOTR and Deadloch!
LOTR: Sam puts two and two together about the Entwives… https://archiveofourown.org/works/54009796
Deadloch: Season 1, Eddie spends a night alone in the tent… https://archiveofourown.org/works/49077442
...and my favourite for OFMD? How can I choose?
I closed my eyes and pointed at the screen, and got this one, which was inspired by art by @ofmderapolag!
Ed wakes up earlier than everyone else and spends some time alone every morning at the bow of Queen Anne's Revenge. One day, he catches a glimpse of a beautiful creature, like and unlike the fabled giant squid. Not half so giant, but much more elegant. Only, what is it doing? For it's risen from the water and is...walking on the edge of the dry sand, stirring it up as it goes along, a lantern held aloft in one hand...
I was tagged by @dracothelizard! Tagging @theyellowestmustard and @whatthefoucault and anyone who wants to play!

I still get notes on this post from time to time and it gets me thinking about it and honestly I can’t decide if I want to see a group dance to Hot To Go or a montage to Femininomenon

Still in awe of the fact that I watched random Australian crime drama Deadloch, got obsessed with one of the main actors, and then found out she'd play a character in my other favourite TV show. And then that character made out with my other favourite character Jim Jiménez. I'm truly the luckiest TV watcher of the year. Thank you Madeleine Sami

Me right now after finishing the entirety of Deadloch.
I usually reserve this Tumblr to being just for our Newsreader mates but this one has stolen my heart like you wouldn't believe. It's just perfect. I was already deeply in love with it from Episode One and had no idea just how clever, beautiful and poignant it would end up being. And I only guessed who the killer was in the seventh episode! It was that well disguised! Each female character had a beautiful character arc and it was wonderful to see women written so authentically and wholeheartedly. They were simply the heart of the show.
I'm going to miss these beautiful disaster zones so so much! What a stunning and hilarious series. Never anticipated I'd end up genuinely crying when it ended! Ten stars! Season Two when!? 🥺💖🇦🇺

After Vic delivers her monologue about Sam in ep7 i love how Dulcie is unable to respond for a second, then looks down at Eddie and takes a shaky breath before turning back. That whole sequence is so good but U can really see how her personal life and her knowing these people intimately is like. Tearing her apart. as she’s trying to solve this case.

I love your work, and I love how many new shows and movies I've discovered through it! Apologies if you've already been drenched in recs for this, but I wanted to throw Deadloch out there as something you might enjoy. It's a recent eight-episode Australian mystery-comedy with too many queer characters to count, including the protagonist, and a wonderful gay, bi, and trans cast and creative team.
I'd never heard of Deadloch??? But I'm SO in???????? Thank you so much for telling me about it! There may not be a reaction, but there will at least be a liveblog here on Tumblr.

Me: I know I started watching Deadloch because Pamela Rabe was in it (and heard there was a queer lead character) but I'm actually really loving the show in general and I'm probably gonna forget she's in it bc I'm so invested in Dulcie's story
Also me, whenever Margaret is on screen: oh my god it's Pamela Rabe (!!!)

a formal plea for everybody to watch deadloch
Tumblr media
deadloch is an australian black-comedy/murder mystery with a majority lesbian cast. it's a feminist subversion of the detective crime fiction genre, and is funny, well-written, and character-driven by complex interesting women. it's a feminist subversion on the crime genre without feeling preachy and touches on topics of decolonization with its aboriginal characters throughout the show.
if you're someone who is often asking for media centered on wlw characters that aren't in high school, have a plot not focused on their sexuality or coming out, and allow their characters to be flawed girlfails then deadloch is a really good show to pick up!
most of the show is focused on the main characters, dulcie and eddie, who are strangers unwillingly forced to work together to find a murderer. they're a classic buddy cop duo with clashing personalities and a full head height difference who evolve throughout the show to form a genuine work partnership.
it's really good and it's only 8 episodes long and on amazon prime! even without the humor it still makes a really solid murder mystery, and as a show it's very pretty and has a great soundtrack and is also literally lesbian broadchurch and a pinnacle example of girl yaoi. also if you're into ofmd madeleine sami, who's gonna be in s2 of ofmd, is one of the protagonists!

While poorly, I've been rewatching Deadloch again.
I've watched the show so many times and yet every single time I notice something new. Like the prevalence of snakes and snake imagery all the way through the whole thing from the opening scene. Even the cakes Ray is putting out are snakes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Especially in Margaret's arc - she's always pointing out other people as the enemy and the threat and using snakes as an implicit threat, when it turns out she - the colonising white lady - is actually one of the dangers.
Tumblr media
Something about Margaret - the living incarnation of entitled white colonial power - being bitten by a tiger snake on stolen land that she killed to keep, then dying on the grave of her ancestor who colonised the area, ending her family line just... perfect poetry.
Tumblr media
It also delights me that for all that Margaret goes on about snakes as the unseen danger, Tammy wears a hoodie with snakes all over it and Faye redecorates the exterior wall of the community centre with a beautiful mural of a tiger snake.
Also reading about tiger snakes in Tasmanian lore - the snake recognised as a protector of the land & also tied with the flow of rivers. Interesting then that the murderers in the show meet their ends a) on an island denied to its rightful people and b) in a powerfully flowing river.
Bonus aaaaaa about the symbolism of a snake shedding its skin - renewal and rebirth and the way the show ends with a new sense of community for all the people finally able to be and live as themselves in Deadloch. Especially Tammy and Miranda both adorned in ochre, something they've been denied for years because of the Carruthers family.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love the layers and layers that the writers have built into the storytelling. The more you watch, the more you see in it. A multi-textured tapestry which makes such a fantastic complete image that at first you might overlook the little details all the way through it.
In conclusion I love Deadloch with a fiery passion and can't wait to see what shenanigans they get up to in Darwin in S2
