IMO I do think it’s a lot better that anime has largely moved away from filler where instead it just focuses on animating the actual series. Like y’all do not understand the pain of being 12 years old and waiting each week for a new episode of Naruto to come out just for it to be a fucking clip show

Sorry for having an opinion, but this isn't what a filler episode is y'all are appropriating anime history. Filler episodes are literally not canon, or at best, canon-lite. Filler episodes are padding so anime can continue while the manga catches up because there's not enough plot to develop. There's HUNDREDS of filler episodes in a show like Naruto where you will have dozens of episodes absent of any ongoing plot, devoid of meaningful character development, full of contradictory plots and retcons because they’re not written by the creator, and often incredibly OOC. You skip fillers when binging tv because if you want to watch all of Naruto around 40% of it is fluff, meaning there’s nearly 500 episode of filler alone. (I just really need to emphasize that this is not an exaggeration on episode count anime was just like that back in the day)

Episodes focused on character development and relationships are not filler! For the most part, you cannot skip those episodes and have zero disruption to your understanding of the show. Y’all don’t wanna bring back filler, you wanna bring back the ability for shows to have more than 10 episode seasons that aren’t constantly on the verge of cancellation.

I see posts go by periodically about how modern audiences are impatient or unwilling to trust the creator. And I agree that that's true. What the posts almost never mention, though, is that this didn't happen in a vacuum. Audiences have had their patience and trust beaten out of them by the popular media of the past few decades.

J J Abrams is famous for making stories that raise questions he never figures out how to answer. He's also the guy with some weird story about a present he never opened and how that's better than presents you open--failing to see that there's a difference between choosing not to open a present and being forbidden from opening one.

You've got lengthy media franchises where installments undo character development or satisfying resolutions from previous installments. Worse, there are media franchises with "trilogies" that are weird slap fights between the makers of each installment.

You've got wildly popular TV shows that end so poorly and unsatisfyingly that no one speaks of them again.

On top of that, a lot of the media actively punishes people for engaging thoughtfully with it. Creators panic and change their stories if the audience properly reacts to foreshadowing. Emotional parts of storytelling are trampled by jokes. Shocking the audience has become the go to, rather than providing a solid story.

Of course audiences have gotten cynical and untrusting! Of course they're unwilling to form their own expectations of what's coming! Of course they make the worst assumptions based on what's in front of them! The media they've been consuming has trained them well.

i respect innie mark for saving gemma at the very least and the romantic in me understands why he chose to stay in hell with helly but it ALSO needs to be understood by both him and every single person in this series that gemma’s feelings come first because no one has suffered more than her and if that’s a hard pill to swallow well then so be it
