One day, he catches a glimpse of a beautiful creature, like and unlike the fabled giant squid. Not half so giant, but much more elegant. Only, what is it doing? For it's risen from the water and is...walking on the edge of the dry sand, stirring it up as it goes along, a lantern held aloft in one hand...

Stede went with Lucius in the first dinghy, carrying the sacks of “necessary” items. What Stede thought was necessary and what Lucius thought was necessary differed but, as Lucius pointed out, “you’re the one carrying it all, and it’s your rotting shack, so it’s up to you.”

Now, as Stede rowed them towards the shore, where the inn stood—well, leaned—proudly on its height, Lucius gave him a piece of advice.

“Get engaged.”
