Flashback friday to an amazing wine tasting last Sunday. I got 5 out of the 7 wines correct in the blind tasting. Surprisingly mixed up the 2001 CDP and 2002 Dunn Napa Cab (which was funkier and more interesting than most). While there was no consensus winner, posting some photos of some of the favorites. Name: 2009 Deering Ideal Red ______________ My rating: 94 ______________ Price: $25 from @undergroundcellar ______________ Brought this bottle to my office for a going away party for my partner in crime in planning and executing the firm’s wine tastings. Didn’t know what to expect, but love another of this producer’s wines. Ended up being a fitting tribute to the firm’s original wino. _________________ Really wonderful blend with a nice nose of sweet tobacco, blue and red fruit, and spice. On the palate, a fantastic layered wine with new world tasting black and red fruit, but balanced by wonderfully aged cedar, tobacco, spiciness and tannins. Looooong finish on this rich, but intruiging wine. At or near peak for me. Name: 2010 Castello di Ama San Lorenzo - Chianti Classico Gran Selezione _________________ My Rating: 92 _________________ Price: Unknown, but notes in CellarTracker indicate that I bought on my 1st anniversary of dating my wife in 2015 to commemorate the date. It looks like you can now buy it for as low as $50 online. _________________ High expectations given that this was a special bottle and Wine Spectator's #6 wine of 2014 clocking in with a 94 score. Had at a wonderful dinner with friends and pretty much lived up to the hype. _________________ Nice nose of dried fruit, Granny Smith apples (seriously), and leather. Palate opens with sharp acidity, with dried fruit and a heavy bit of saddle leather following, finishes long with fine tannins. We just splash decanted for 15 minutes before serving, but probably could have used more air. All the pieces there and was definitely an interesting drink, but didn't quite come together with the elegance and coherence I was expecting. Delicious @querciabella Camartina vertical tasting at @zachysdc with work colleagues. Really unique opportunity to not only get to know the terroir, but also follow the evolution of the winemaking and style over time. While I don’t have detailed tasting notes, the noses on all of these were so perfumed and all of them completely exceeded all of my expectations in terms of the palate, with many drinking incredibly young for their vintage.
