the most ideal ending for haibara ai/ miyano shiho/ "sherry" imo
it's no secret that i love haibara ai's character and her arc. from someone who lost everything: her childhood, her family and freedom; to escaping and she learning how to trust again/ gaining a found family, is just beautiful.
even though i'm a coai shipper (and of course I would be very happy if they're canon) i don't mind if they never get together (tho i hope they do, it would soothe my shipper soul), because ai's character arc can still be completed without coai being a thing.
her arc can only be completed if these things happen:
Haibara Ai must return to being Miyano Shiho:
evidence 1: ch. 1110, where conan was wondering why he hasn't grown taller. It's probably because of APTX-4869 is a cell destroying due to apotoxin properties explained in the haido hotel arc, making it impossible to grow/ eternal youth. Even if she stayed a child to relive her childhood, she would stay a child forever based on this info from this chapter.
evidence 2: ayumi and conan inspiring her not to run away from her fate. She got braver & motivated to live through her connections with people and became a better person. by returning to her true, but reformed self, would be the ultimate completion of her arc because she's confronting her fears and she's no longer running away from her past.
She must be a part of the final battle, both as the biochemist, inner informant but also a strategist:
people know that haibara ai is hiding stuff about the BO from conan mainly because she believes it's not safe without the enemy revealing all of their cards and one false move will have a ripple effect of negative consequences/ endanger the people around her like how the BO got rid of Akemi/ her parents.
shinichi ignores her warnings anyways and she always has to track him to give him the spare antidote/ rescue him multiple times, so it makes sense why she wouldn't tell him everything.
note: conan/ shinichi already failed twice in his encounter with the BO on two seperate occassions. if vermouth didn't already have favoritism feelings from the NY case for conan, detective conan would've ended in ep. 345 and if gin hadn't doubted himself to stop checking the lockers after finding conan's tracers twice/ double checked with pisco, it would've ended earlier (i mean that guy shot his arm to neutralize a tranquilizer. i'm convinced he could probably survived being kicked with the super shoes/ other defense measures, anyways i digress).
i am in the minority opinion, where i don't think haibara ai has the complete antidote bc she has incomplete data. she could only create a temporary antidote with the bloody floppy disk found in the desperate revival arc, which only has part of the original composition of the APTX 4869 and is using paikal as a substitute base (not the actual base in the original version), which is incomplete and temporary.
APTX was built off of her parents research/ other people's research over 50 years ago, whose data she doesn't have, so it makes sense that she probably doesn't remember every part of what made up APTX. If she doesn't know enough of the original components of APTX 4869, then obviously she can't come up with the antidote.
i see a lot of grief about haibara not telling conan everything about the BO, but i think this is in part due to conan hiding stuff from her / continue to put himself in danger & almost dying multiple times after she warned him not to be so reckless/ not all of the higher ranked members of the BO have appeared. honestly if conan let's her in on akai, yusaku/ yukiko, the intelligence officer moles in BO, FBI planning, and heiji, without hiding stuff from her, I think she'd probably feel comfortable revealing more information, especially about the base of operations that she knows about, and the combined intelligence will be the death of BO.
also akai was in the BO too/ should know some things considering that he was sent on missions, but idk why people are only giving grief to haibara, considering she has expressed multiple times that she only knows the names of things but she was only exposed to things pertaining to her. Even though she grew up in the organization, she also doesn't have the full picture of the organization, as she never met high ranking members like Rum/ Pisco, she's only heard their names/ rumors.
I digress. Haibara Ai has to be part of the strategy team to take down the BO in the end.
side note: only three figures in the entire series has been called a "silver bullet," which are Shiho, Shinichi and Akai, they're the three that will play the biggest roles in taking down the BO.
Shiho confessing who she is to Ran, the DB and the police
I honestly think that Shiho should be the one to confess to Ran that she's the creator of the drug that turned her boyfriend into a kid before Shinichi tells her. She's probably not asking for forgiveness and she'll probably tell her that Ran reminds her of her sister, Akemi, who died because she got in the way of the BO, expressing a desire to keep her safe but unintentionally hurt her, taking the blame. But when Shiho does this, it will be when the antidote is permanent/ the conflict is nearing the end. Ran would then be brought into the fold and finally become an ally (considering how Aoyama-sensei is probably saving Ran to be a part of the main conflict later, somehow, since her 17th birthday is a significant plot point).
I think Shiho will tell Ayumi, whom she's closest to. To basically tell her the truth and to tell them not to become involved in the main conflict or something. Idk, but I think her telling the DB would be significant somehow.
Idk if she'll reveal the truth to the police, but I do believe that she should have some consequences for her actions. but considering that jodie/ the FBI offered her witness protection, it will probably be alright and i'm not going to comment too much considering i have no idea how japanese laws would handle someone like haibara.
Shiho staying with Prof. Agasa
a lot of people are convinced that she'll go live with the Akai family, but I seriously doubt it. they might acknowledge that they have a relationship but being sentimental enough to form a close-knit bond, idk. there's enough chapters highlighting the akai family/ haibara ai strained dynamic to prove that she would probably go with the professor in the end.
i feel like she would stay with the professor as a daughter figure, helping him with his inventions like how she is now, but maybe traveling more (considering she grew up overseas).
anyways she'll be free/ enjoying her freedom and maybe she'll go study/ get a PhD in medicine or something else.
also if the end ship isn't coai, then i would much rather her be single in the end than in a potential romance.
but either way, her arc would be complete: she has a found family, she's no longer haunted by the BO and she's finally free to live as herself.

handbinding of A Study in Scarlette by kittebasu
There are people who want to live forever, and then there is Shinichi, who just wants to live a little longer than this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
this bind has been in my head since i first read the fic like, three years ago. i dreamed up so many ideas for it, for so long, and now it's finally done! the typeset was actually done in early 2022, back when i was still using google docs, but it went through a few iterations because i was just. so. fiddly. with every aspect of this book. it needed to be perfect (as close to perfect as i, an amateur bookbinder out of my depth, can get) and it had to be absolutely over the top, to reflect the insane amount of love and care that the author put into the fic itself.
the first time i read this fic, i barely knew what detective conan was, much less all of the intricate plot details; i was just along for the ride, but by the end i was completely invested. i went back and watched through the anime as well as a few movies (it took me six months) and then read the fic again. and then a few more times. kaishin and the world of dcmk has utterly gripped me. it's 100% this fic's fault and i love it so, so, much.
i went through a few iterations of visual designs and i'm really happy with the little details i managed to squeeze in.
the entire color scheme is based around red, because 1) it's a murder mystery, 2) for scarlette shinamoto (and the title of the fic as well as the original holmes novel it references), and 3) the irony of "lady red" actually being red. the secret fourth reason is that i think red/gold is a super sexy color combo.
i sewed the textblock with red thread to reference holmes' "scarlet thread of murder".
Tumblr media
another detail i love is the five yen coin bookmark, it was one of my first ideas and it turned out even better than i thought.
Tumblr media
i wanted the endpapers to evoke a sense of the white marbled floor of the ballroom, with the glow-in-the-dark kaitou kid caricature being the luminol on the floor, and the little pops of red looks like blood that's been mixed in. i lucked out in that the other side of the endpaper was like a lavender-purpley color, i like to think of it as a little wink wink nudge to the color of the actual Lady Red.
Tumblr media
the chapter pages got a few reworkings, but i'm happy with the illustrations i ended up doing for each of them. the chapter titles are one of my favorite things about the fic, each one has so much meaning packed into it and flows so beautifully, and i wanted to put as much care into making them pop as possible.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the cover was a linocut carving i designed and carved, which i then printed onto the bookcloth, and ironed on htv on top.
Tumblr media
i also threw in a couple of my drawings of my favorite scenes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is getting way too long, so i'll end it here. i'll have a separate post detailing the process every step of the way, if anyone wants to take a closer look. this fic is kind of directly responsible for getting me into fanbinding, so it's safe to say it altered the course of my life. i now spend way too much time (and money) looking at book stuff.
kittebasu, if, somehow, you see this and would like an author copy, i would be honored to make one and ship it to you; i would be overjoyed to gift you with any art i have the ability to make, because the fics you wrote have irreversibly altered my brain chemistry, and being able to give back in any capacity would be a dream. (thank you.)
a few postscripts:
i am not selling any copies of this fic. partially because i believe in the gift economy of fandom as well as firmly keeping fanbinding a hobby that will stay unmonetized, but also because it took me months (years, if we are counting when i first finished the typeset) to finish this and i do not have the strength.
however, if you are also a fan of this fic and would like a copy, i honestly, fervently, encourage you to give fanbinding a try! renegade publishing and its discord server are an absolutely wonderful and free resource. i knew nothing about bookbinding and had zero materials when i first started, but i've learned so much thanks to the lovely people there. if you're still apprehensive about getting started, i'd be willing to share my typeset of this fic as well as answer any questions about the making of this book if you DM me.

KAISHIN OPINION: COUSINS REVEAL?
Since I haven't watch the movie yet, I can neither confirm nor deny the whole cousins spoiler thing. Whether or not its true, 20+ years is a long ass time and I've ignored canon before so this won't stop me.
If they truly are cousins in the movie and it ends up being canon in the manga too? Then fuck it. It won't be my canon. Especially when Aoyama is also the one planning to make Toichi alive after literally putting Kaito through horrific trauma of witnessing his father's murder and mourning him
No. Just NO
I respect that its his manga and his characters, and I as a fan, I am only borrowing his creations. But even so, as a fan, I have the right to chose what I wish to do with whatever happens in canon in my FANWORKS
Either I acknowledge that they're cousins and continue shipping them (I'm asian so the whole cousins being lovers thing isnt anything new in my culture nor is it a crime in my country...or a number of asian or southeast asian countries if I'm not mistaken. Granted, it doesn't usually happen simply because people tend to fall for friends or colleagues but cousins marrying dont raise any eyebrows here)
Or I ignore canon entirely and they stay unrelated in any way
However, if those who followed me for my kaishin content then dont worry, I'll still post anything of kaishin that comes to mind
Most likely, I'll ignore them being cousins if it ends up canon. Because honestly? There's a lot of things in canon I dont agree with so ignoring them as cousins won't be the first thing I've ignored or changed in canon. In that same vein, I'll ignore Toichi being alive too because while something like that is usually something to rejoice in any other situation or story, the whole thing is unnecessarily cruel and borderline an inhumane thing to do towards your own child. In my opinion, Toichi should not be written in such a way so for my fanworks, he will not be
To those who want him alive, thats okay. Go ahead but I will not acknowledge that canon
Also, for those who are uncomfortable at the possible canon cousins reveal then thats more than okay. You are free to unfollow or block me or any kaishin posts
So....yeah, I'll ship kaishin whatever the outcome is because in the end, the characters and manga are FICTIONAL so I can change, acknowledge or ignore canon as I wish
_____________
Anyways, thanks for reading this far. Also, here! This is my twitter side-account for all things DCMK & KaiShin moonlit_death because I'm a petty couch potato and will NEVER stop shipping KaiShin dammit!

Okay.... Let's analyze what happened in dcmk these last few weeks. Obvious SPOLIERS will be commented so you know.
Tumblr media
> Appearance of Aoko's mother in Magic Kaito.
Where was she all this time? Why did she never appear or even show a sign of life? She didn't even call her daughter on her birthday... She appears so oblivious to everything, she didn't even know who Kaitou Kid was since her husband has always been obsessed with trying to catch this thief for YEARS. It seems like Gosho just randomly placed her in the story without trying to connect with the canon, it's almost as if she was a character outside of her original manga.
> Film 27 and its breaks in logic and common sense.
After all these years, Gosho decided to go against everything he had already said and made the Kaishin to be cousins, not only ruining a unique relationship (whether you shipped or not) but also bringing plot holes and contradictions in the story. If they are cousins what's the excuse for them never trying to even interact before? Why was it that when Yukiko first met Kaito, she never acted like she was related to her? The same with Toichi, she always talked about him as just her teacher and NOTHING more than that, it doesn't make sense to put that in the story now. Why did Kaito never even have support from his family? Not even showing up at Toichi's symbolic funeral? How come Yusaku never went to talk to his late brother's family, even if he knew the truth KAITO DIDN'T KNOW...
No one even considered his feelings...
> All the bullshit involving Kaishin.
The biggest problem for me about them being cousins is not just because of the ship but because of all the history and construction they had. It's as if everything that's different about them is summed up in the simple fact that they're related. But Kaishin has always had something unique, something that Gosho himself defined as "a mysterious bond". Them not having the slightest type of relationship made everything so unique, a connection that only the two of them could have together, one would easily understand the other even though they were complete strangers. Now I feel like they want to throw that away.
> TOICHI KUROBA AND MY HATE FOR HIM.
Gosho had already said that Toichi was possibly alive but the confirmation brought me a wave of anger and contempt that I had never felt for any other dcmk character (even bo). Let's think about Kaito in this whole story:
• lost his father when he was just a child and is still traumatized by it today.
• for 8 FUCKING YEARS he discovers that his father's death was never an accident but a murder.
• His father was actually an internationally wanted thief who was after a precious stone capable of bringing immortality.
• he steps into his father's shoes as KID and decides to try to find out for himself what happened to his father, who killed him and why.
• now there is a criminal organization that thinks he is the KID who didn't really die and they are trying to kill him once and for all.
• he decides to put himself at risk looking for Pandora, being something belonging to the organization and the police themselves.
• a lot of people hate him, regardless of whether he hurts people or not.
• more and more he becomes more and more removed from everything and becomes burdened with the KID charade.
• his own mother doesn't care about him, on the contrary, it seems like she likes to make things even more difficult for her son (she disguised herself as her dead ex-husband just to screw with her son's head, that's sickening to say the least).
• everything Kaito does is because of his father's murder, he never wanted to be KID, he never liked stealing, he doesn't do any of that for pleasure (except when it involves a certain mini detective but that's not the focus now ).
• and in the end his father was ALIVE all this time, doing who knows what while his son was risking his life because of him... BRO...
This whole thing is insane. And not in a good way.

yknow, i love kaishin/shinkai but every time i read an angsty fic (majority) my heart drops so far i feel it in my feet
#mildrant
i keep thinking about how people portray kaito, when to me he’s one of the loneliest possible characters with even fewer people knowing his identity because it can put them in danger. not just that but it also puts HIM in danger, just because he’s wanted by police and forces everywhere he goes— without knowing the actual reasons why. realistically his life is always in danger, more so than shinichi’s. he has the organisation targeting him, police, even detective friends and on top of that having your best friend bash KID: idk but in his position i don’t know how much he’s been through… i sometimes think he’s far more vulnerable because he has to put up more walls and façades.
one reason why i support kaishin is because shinichi doesn’t unnecessarily have a reason to catch him- knowing him he’ll want to find out more and have a proper reason to go after him. he KNOWS kaitou kid isn’t a bad person. he doesn’t know his identity or want to pursue him recklessly, and i should think kaito appreciates his detective a lot. hakuba and aoko give me mixed feelings.. i like aokaito but… i just think relationships based around honesty would be better.
i love aoko, i really do.
kaito really deserves someone who loves and understands him at his best and at his worst. his support system is much smaller than shinichi’s. to top it off, kaito is really devoted to his dad’s cause that he had to pick up OUT OF NOWHERE. that amount of burden after losing his dad, a somewhat absent mom and then finding out about jii san having to take on the mantle… i can’t imagine how much pain is repressed on his part.
in short i really love kaito kuroba as a character and adore him strongly. fics that use his phobia to attack him or to cause him heavy fear saddens me a lot. i still reinstate my point that kaito is one of the loneliest characters i’ve seen and characters that have to play an ‘antagonistic’ role in order to protect people they love and avenge their family just hits really hard
along with magic kaito’s series unlikely to ever get an ending or closure…
Kaito Kuroba deserves so much better.
idk finding people from dcmk comm or kaishin/shinkai fans who have opinions about this
also kaishin/shinkai roleplayers please hmu i’m at a destructive point

Kaishin happy thoughts (m27 spoilers)
Since Kaishin didn't grow up together I wonder if the Westermarck effect will be that potent. Well in any case the taboo against cousin relationships is mainly due to genetic disorders of offsprings which isn't an issue for kaishin. So ignoring the first instinctual reaction, logically there's no harm for two males. Maybe socially there will be discrimination (?/or not as lethal bc it's legal in Japan) but at the moment it doesn't seem like the public in the dcmk universe knows about the two family's relations. Yusaku and Toichi do seem to like keeping secrets so I guess kaishin can do the same.
Delusion: If kaishin does want kids (AU) they can probably get haibara to fix any genetic defects (gene editing technology is possible now in fact it's already been done -like the twin babies in China and they're still fine) and the dc universe seem to have much more advance science anyways (shrinking drugs). Apparently defects from this is pretty low but around the same chance as pregnancy of female over 40yr. Is genetic diversity needed as much for kaishin they seem to have pretty different strengths and weaknesses aside from their similarities. DC cousin relationship might be more chill bc of other cousin canon ships.
Or perhaps Heisei Kaishin and Reiwa Kaishin are two entities now (lol).
Kaito will swiftly tell shinichi it's fine with his 400IQ and shinichi would need to take some time to consult with Haibara--> Happy ending
Just some personal ramblings .

I was probably too happy that Akako was finally being (as far as I can tell)genuinely nice to Aoko that I missed it. I’ve been wanting that for over a decade at this point.
I’ve been eating so good so far DCMK wise this year. Conan and Aoko canon interaction, Akako not being two faced to Aoko and Kaito in disguise watching over Aoko and Nakamori.
Would have liked Kid and Aoko to have talked about Sun Halo but if we see her in a more detective role it could happen in the future (hopefully in this volume).
I mean, I got back into everything because of what I'd heard about the movie, but the more I see about the recent developments - Aoko in the movie, recent Kid chapter having Hakuba in it, Akako like said - the more I'm happy about it all myself!
I honestly have no idea if/when the events of Sun Halo are going to get brought up again, but the whole "Aoko suspecting Kaito is Kid" thing is clearly something that keeps coming back whether she likes it or not, so... it's possible that the scar could be a plot point.
I may have said, I wish we'd got to see Hakuba's reaction to Aoko mentioning that Kid was hurt, but I suppose that's more of a fanfic sort of thing since it isn't as "relevant" as the resolution, and the Kaito-Aoko moment at the end, which I do love.
I've seen a little criticism for the Sun Halo and Green Dragon chapters for being a bit more Conan-style in their outlines (as in, unravelling tricks after he's done them, which to me makes sense because he's faster now), but honestly, I like what they've both done for Aoko. Because in Sun Halo she was helping him all the way through, and she was the one who solved a few things herself, showing her compassion and intelligence, and in Green Dragon it wasn't just her mother who was noticing those small details.
It just... it reminds me of why each time I say "Magic Kaito has two different detective/thief pairings," Kaito/Aoko fits because she is! She's wanting to catch him just as much as the "real" detectives! The dynamic is there, and letting her show it is a delight.

What is your favorite DCMK crack theory?
Kaito's dad is Karasuma Renya, who already found Pandora and as a result de-aged when he 'died' 50+ years ago.
There's a surprising amount of evidence that lines up for it, but if it were to end up being true then that would end up greatly stunting Kaito's story if his emotional arc is intrinsically linked to Detective Conan's ending.
But may as well go over the evidence-
First of all the ties with crows. It's kinda obvious for both of them, but to summarize: the 'Karasu' in Karasuma is crow, the black organization he is the boss of is often likened to crows, and a his phone number plays the tune of 7 children (a song about crows) Meanwhile, Kuroba is 'black feathers' which crows have, and then there's the fact that Toichi is one of the most likely people to be Kaitou Corbeau (French for Crow) who while being a black Kaitou Kid also spreads Crow feathers around.
Second, I'm going to point back to Kaitou Corbeau for a sec. Sure we don't know that Corbeau is Kaitou's dad, but he's either his dad, his mom, or both; and I like those odds. So what do we know about the Black organization? They're associated with crows, they wear all black, they do crimes, and they use alcohols as codenames. Corbeau actually checks all of those boxes. Crows, Corbeau is french for crow, check. Black- Corbeau wears a Kid costume that's pure black, check. Crime, yeaah that one's a gimme. Alcohol name, there's actually a type of black wine called Corbeau.
Thirdly, Vermouth is the boss's favourite, and while that's probably because she's got her whole dealio about not aging in decades, if the Boss is Toichi then of course he favours his student over others.
Fourth, if this is the cases, it makes it more interesting that the MK and DC organizations are separate criminal groups with similar goals, because it means that the MK org were targeting the previous Kid not just because he was a pain in the ass but also because he was intimately involved with a rival group. It also explains why they haven't ever really targeted Kaito himself even though they were aware Toichi was Kid- They think that he didn't really care about his family.
Fifth, this one isn't evidence but it actually gives a good reason for why Kid cameo's in DC so often, and also would retroactively make the bit where Toichi as Kid declares young Shinichi to be his older brother while being as spooky as possible a much more interesting thing.
Of course all this has heavy implications that leads to heavy Kaito angst but.... what can I say, I like to torment characters a little bit.

Bad Things Happen Bingo! The event where you send me requests according to this marvelous card! (Red cross is the completed prompt, character headshots are prompts I’ve already filled).
He's a child with the brain of an adult, the biggest moron you've ever seen!
I cannot get over the fact I somehow didn't write for Detectice Conan until this week. This franchise was my actual gateway into whump when I was 6 and my ass still didn't write any juicy stuff with it. I got back into DCMK back in 2017, have rewatched select episodes and/or movies of it (mostly the 1st and 2nd ones, which are both part of my formative whump experience lol) every year… but nope!
Actually, this prompt was supposed to be for IDOLiSH7, and I had the idea for it written down for two years; but let's be real, I was never going to write it, especially this late, and instead, I jumped onto the first other opportunity to get rid of this prompt.
That opportunity came in the form of Tekiro who, to my surprise, actually paid attenion to my stupid ramblings about my stupid bingo card for whomst knows what dark purposes, and handed me an idea on a silver platter: DCMK, Shinichi as Conan and Ran, post-falling-into-some-water-during-a-case. I was smitten with the idea and ran with so hard.
I think the final product did diverge from Tekiro's original idea, unfortunately. Ran was meant to play a much more proactive role in this, but instead, I ended up with mostly Shinichi doing what he does best: overthink absolutely everything and also simping for Ran while he's at it. The image of Conan buried in blankets was fun though!
-------------------------------------------------
Blanket Statements
Summary: Shinichi, buried underneath three and a half blankets, ponders upon the orb (his feelings on the situation and also how cool Ran is).
Fandom: Detective Conan Relationships: Shinichi/Ran
Word Count: 1.7K words
AO3 version available here.
-------------------------------------------------
Somewhere through the haze of fever, between two approximate tons of blankets covering from chin to toe, one statement rings through his mind: this is somewhat humiliating.
Well, Shinichi supposes being a genius sixteen-year-old stuck in a six-year-old’s body is embarrassing to begin with since nobody takes you seriously anymore (except, like, two cops, a fugitive from the criminal organisation who got you there in the first place and one jackass from Osaka who somehow guessed you were a genius sixteen-year-old stuck in a six-year-old’s body). Being treated like a child has certainly not stopped irking him, even if with time, the mask has started sticking with a little less discomfort to his face; but this is another humiliation altogether, even compared to what’s sadly become his daily life.
For all of the mishaps he’s had on cases and outside of his favourite activity in the whole world, Shinichi had never pictured himself buried in a pile of blankets, with just his face sticking out from there, in the Mouris’ flat of all places. Maybe Prof Akasa’s lab would’ve felt less shameful, since that man has seen him in states Shinichi can only hope to forget the memory of, but the Mouris’? Where Ran lives? Mortifying.
The way he ended up in this situation is a farce in itself – that much he knows from how Hattori mocked the hell out of him on the phone when he had to explain the context behind one of Ran and Kazuha’s conversations that stupid Osakan had caught word of. He wouldn’t have needed said Osakan’s opinion to think that, of course, but it only serves to corroborate what he already deducted.
It was just a run-of-the-mill criminal case in Beika: suspicious death near a river, three suspects without any alibi and possible motives all around, foul play clearly involved. Truth be told, it was almost insulting how easy it was for Shinichi to untangle the whole thing and straighten it into a single timeline to take everyone along for the side with Uncle’s cigarette-laden voice.
Or, well, it’d have been, if he hadn’t fallen straight into the cold waters below when trying to showcase something to Inspector Megure.
Instead, it very much had the opposite effect: not only did it then take Inspector Sato around fifteen minutes to deduce what he was trying to hint at, it also threw the whole situation for a loop because, for all of his athletic prowess, Shinichi had trouble swimming with the heavy winter gear Ran had dressed him up in and drowning became a possibility much too fast to his liking.
Ran did save him from the waters, at least, but not before he was thoroughly soaked and had to stew in his own juices for a little while. There was no hiding behind the bushes to pretend to be Sleeping Kogoro either, so it was a long, drawn-out time session of whodunnit – one Shinichi was very frustrated not to be participating in and very satisfied to leave.
If it had stopped at an uncomfortable half-hour spent watching not-that-sharp-witted detectives (and Inspector Sato) try putting together a puzzle that wasn’t that complicated because nobody had noticed the clue left by the riverbank, Shinichi wouldn’t be stewing in his frustration and pile of blankets. No, that’d have been too easy, and someone in the skies above has something against him, he’s certain of it.
It’s a cliché. It’s such a cliché and he’s certain hypothermia isn’t supposed to do that to you aside from, well, hypothermia – but Shinichi has fallen ill after a dip in the water and it pisses him off.
Yeah, okay, he’s caught what can honestly be called a nasty cold, but this doesn’t mean Ran isn’t going overkill with it. He loves her, he really does, including when she gets protective over him (even when she doesn’t know it, courtesy of his current form); but this really is too much.
Ran’s always been like that, though. Once she gets into caring mode, there’s nobody that can stop us. Not even a tsunami could, Shinichi is certain: if he, or her father, or Sonoko, or Kazuha was trapped in the midst of a deadly flood, a wall of water heading for all of them, Ran would swim back to them, put them to safety, and only then maybe think of saving herself. It’s nerve-wracking to be around her, sometimes, when you know she’ll absolutely destruct herself if it means saving someone.
Long reasoning short, it’s not surprising that she’d bury him under a bazillion blankets too much for a simple cold; so imagine one where his voice, usually so childish and disgustingly high-pitched for a teen (let alone impossible to take seriously, let’s be real there), has almost gone instinct on him and where he can spike a fever whenever his body feels like it’s not doing enough damage to the virus inside it. Delightful, really.
It’d be more delightful if it didn’t feel like being smothered in a thousand heavy blankets by the strongest arms in the world – but what can Shinichi say? That he doesn’t like the attention? That’d be a lie. He couldn’t even say that without breaking into a terribly tense smirk. That’s ridiculous.
Ridiculous, but also somewhat humiliating. And also, he’s dying from blanket overdose.
Time to do something about it, he supposes.
“Raaaaan,” he takes on his whiny little snotty brat voice (even if it sounds more scratched than Prof Akasa’s dust-covered records that he still uses, for some reason), “do I really need all those blankets?”
She turns around in half a second (Shinichi refuses to think for even a second this fever and the mucus in his brain are slowing his mind, he’s more than above that) and rushes in a swift run, hair flowing behind her and picking all of the daylight in the room.
“You’ll be cold if you take them off!” She replies without a single grain of reluctance. “And you need to be warm!”
“But… I’m way too hot, Raaaaan…”
Instead of getting at least one blanket off him, out of three (a meltingly comfortable plaid, a scratchy blanket Uncle keeps in his office for some reason and Ran’s favourite, he can tell by the fragrance, it’s very pleasing), she kneels in front of the couch with a worried frown that’s both endearing and infuriating.
“Let me see,” she tells him in that voice she always gives the Detective Boys, always gives Conan.
Maybe it’s because having a head cold is making him snappier, but he can’t jive with that tone as well as he usually does. Most days, he can just bypass the infantilization of it all to focus on what matters (Ran paying him her upmost attention and spending all her time with him).
Ran does what she tends to do when confronted with someone with too red of a cheek: she puts her left hand on her forehead, palm against skin, and the back of her right on someone else’s forehead. Strands of his hair, soaked with sweat, are clinging to the base of her fingers, but she doesn’t complain, doesn’t as much as frown in disgust or discomfort, not even slightly.
“Your fever’s gone down a little,” she concludes with a slightly less concerned voice and alleviated features, much to his own relief. “But we need to keep it in check!”
“I know, Ran, I knooooow.”
She gets back up and stares at the pile in front of her, tilting her head left to right and back to left, a pout on her lips.
“On second thought, if you’re feeling better, maybe we could take off a blanket… Do you feel too hot, Conan?”
He vigorously shakes his head to the point of dizzying himself. This would be embarrassing if he wasn’t too busy trying to get himself a little freer, and also, dealing with a stupid head cold that has turned everything about his sharp senses into nothing but meaningless mush.
“I see,” Ran muses, fingers dancing on her chin before she finally goes for the top blanket – the scratchy one Kogoro keeps in his office. “Is it better?”
He nods again and, to his pleasure, it’s both cooler on his overheated skin and bringing a smile to the girl he’s officially dating when not obligated to be in a six-year-old’s literal shoes.
“That’s good, then! Do you need anything else?”
Shinichi hesitates on that one. Ran’s pretty much been hovering him nonstop for two days, and it’s starting to show on her face. Not so deep down, he knows he doesn’t need much: he has water near him, there is no painkillers he can take for a couple more hours, his eyelids are drooping again and he’s, at the end of the day, a teenager used to living alone.
However, being Conan has a couple perks; most importantly, if he wants to be a needy brat who just has to have big sis Ran by his side during a boring Sunday while sick with a killer head cold, then he gets to be that brat all over again. Ran can barely say no to Conan, much more than she’d be with Shinichi, and there just have to be perks about his current situation. Moreover… Faded memories of frankly lonely days spent wasting away in bed or on the couch with barely any attention other than Prof Akasa’s have left him wanting for more, and if usually he can keep it at bay with a passion for crime mysteries, now, it’s a whole other story. A distraction is always welcome.
All in all, with a dashing uniform vote from all of his sides, Shinichi decides being whiny as Conan is the best use of his stupidly boring sick day.
“Can you stay with me?” He asks, sniffling, as miserable as the most cliché Victorian child possible.
As always, to his upmost happiness, Ran’s face softens and she gives him the sweetest smile as she comes to sit next to him.
“Of course I can do that, Conan,” she replies with words like honey. “Anything else?”
“No, that’s good enough.”
He lets his head droop on her shoulder and falls asleep right here and there.
He can think about this being humiliating or not when it doesn’t feel as fuzzy and warm to be bundled in so many blankets.

Fic Writer 20 Questions
tagged by @sweaterkittensahoy
How many works do you have on AO3? 184
What's your total AO3 word count? 270,123
What fandoms do you write for? Currently I'm writing a lot for One Piece with a side of FF14, but I've hopped around a lot over time!
Top Five Fics by Kudos drown the bed in kerosene and let your matches fall (Monster Prom) Local Dumpster Fire Didn't Try, Still Got Laid (BnHA) flock (Haikyuu!!) (love is like ice cream) we've always got room for more (俺物語!! | Ore Monogatari!!) this isn't breaking news (BnHA)
Do you respond to comments? I do my best! Sometimes it takes me a very long time, and some fics I just never reply on because I'm so long out of the fandom that it feels disingenuous to reply though...
What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Oh boy, you know, I really don't write a lot of sad things? Emotionally, maybe the only victim of these innocent crimes (is me), which is a heavily one-sided love focused DCMK fic In terms of actual tragedy, Corporeal (or: Oa is only slightly better than a shopping mall) wherein the concept is "what if we took the zombie apocalypse concept of Blackest Night and really just turned the dial up to 11?"
What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Most of them? Most of them. I write a lot of adult content, and PWPs tend to end happily. My current fave is we carry our oceans within us, wherein Chopper celebrates his birthday over three different years. The last one is the happiest ending possible c:
Do you get hate on fics? Rarely! I think the most issues I've had were in MZDS fandom. I set commenting to registered users only around then, and haven't had issues since. I think being mostly a rarepair writer helps a lot with that lol
Do you write smut? Enthusiastically and with great regularity
Craziest Crossover? A tie between DCMK x FF14 (you are sweet like honey and I am filthy from it) and Untitled Goose Game x Fallout 4 (Fallout 4: Goose Game Redux)
Have you ever had a fic stolen? If I have, I don't know about it!
Have you ever had a fic translated? A couple! I feel like it's rare, but it's happened at least once or twice?
Have you ever co-written a fic before? In theory yes? I have a bunch of WIPs that have never been finished that live in my documents, and then I have one (1) fic that was created based on an RP with a friend years ago!
All time favorite ship? That's like asking me to name my favourite child. I am aghast, I am offended, I am waving my hands in a speechless manner, I am going to say Wrightworth because I keep coming back to read it again and again, even though I've only written fic for it maybe once
What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? I mean, if it's unlikely I'll finish a WIP, it's because I don't want to work on it anymore? If I had to choose, it would be a fic that I was co-writing with a friend from a fandom that I'm still into, but that they're desperately no longer interested in. I'm not going to tell you about it, because I'd hate to pressure them about it c:
What are your writing strengths? Insert gif of frightened cat with its back arched and tail puffed up. I'm bad at identifying my own strengths. If forced to offer an answer, I'd say that I'm good at writing strong emotions between characters, both during smut and outside of it? That seems to be what my top kudos'd fic indicate, at least.
What are your writing weaknesses? 1) Commas. Fuck those guys. 2) Finding synonyms for the word "moan". Why must English limit me so? 3) Writing money shots is annoying and boring. I can come up with innovative ways to skip writing prep (some of which are: what about a blow job instead?) but you can't really write a porn without someone having an orgasm and let me tell you, it's really fucking hard to come up with a new and inventive way to write "and then [character] came. all things considered, it was pretty good." you know? Most of my WIPs are all of the foreplay and cut off right before that bit. There's a joke to be made about orgasm denial here, probably.
Thoughts on dialogue in another language? Sometimes useful, but I categorically ignore footnotes, so if you put words from a foreign language into a fic and translate them that way, I will 100% never know what they mean.
First fandom you wrote in? Harry Potter. I'm a product of my generation.
Favorite fic you've written? Again, why are you making me name my favourite child? I'm proud of a lot of my fic, I think, but off the top of my head, I'm going to list off a top 5 of fics that I haven't mentioned yet: love is a sacrament that should be taken kneeling (BnHA) now he calling me nyquil (MZDS) make of my arms a castle (FF14) DAREDEVIL'S RAINY NIGHT: A HARROWING TALE OF MANPAIN (Daredevil) ridiculous, unacceptable, pls don’t (DCMK)
Tags (very optional): @kaijuscientists, @janzoo, @elementalsight, and now I can think of precisely zero other friends who I'm fairly sure write the fanfiction haha

Hi I just got into dcmk and am super interested to read breaking stasis but realised the images on ao3 seem to be broken, is it possible to fix it or either upload the story elsewhere to read it? (like pixiv or ko-fi?)
Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry about that! It's probably because I used Discord image links in the AO3 page and Discord ended up changing their image hosting system.
I just uploaded it onto Pixiv here, and when I have time I'll fix it on Ao3! Thanks for letting me know about this!

Just an idea but
How about a “Now You See Me” AU for DCMK?
BTW if anyone has written this already, I’d love to read it – same goes if this post inspires you to write it
Spoiler Warning about “Now You See Me” (2013 movie), obviously
I figure Shinichi and Kaito would be twins in this
Shinichi obviously works for the FBI
And Hattori working with Shinichi for law enforcement
Hakuba could be the Interpol agent
Kaito keeps in the shadows or at least hides his relationship to Shinichi
They are the Fifth Horseman because of Toichi’s death
With Kaito and Shinichi being the instigators, that disqualifies the Gosho Boys as the Four Horsemen
Though both Kaito and Shinichi use identities that disguise their relation to each other and to Toichi
Suzuki Jirokichi could be the rich sponsor, although I’m not entirely happy with that because of the company history being relevant
Kudou Yuusaku could be the man analysing and revealing magician acts; he had no ill intend and would be more rueful about what happened with Toichi;
Yuusaku would honestly regret and mourn what happened with Toichi because they were friends and he didn’t mean to push him to that
Shinichi and Kaito acknowledge that Yuusaku wants to do penance, so they decide not to frame him for everything
Whoever rich bastard is at fault and sponsoring them has it coming though
I’m really annoyed over who would be the horsemen because I feel like Kaito, Hakuba, Masumi deserve that spotlight but I also think Hakuba fits perfectly for Interpol
Sonoko could be an unlikely magician for the Four Horsemen, I think that works
We also always could swap Hakuba for Aoko, so that she’s Miss Interpol (but I just hc Hakuba as an Interpol man, I’m convinced he’d end up there)
Haibara – or maybe Shiho – could also possibly fill out the Horsemen
So Shinichi and Hattori are FBI, Hakuba is Interpol, Kaito under a fake identity is one of the Horsemen (steering the group from within), the remaining three Horsemen could be Masumi, Sonoko, and
Kaito would be the one that “dies” in the high speed chase; obviously
I really really want to stick with Shinichi’s age range, I don’t want to bring Vermouth, Bourbon, or anyone older into this, not even for the washed-up has-been magician
I’m really drawing a blank as to who could/ would be the rich insurance mogul
I had one idea for the sponsor but I need to put that under the cut because it’s a massive spoiler for DCMK if you aren’t caught up
The sponsor could be the Karasuma Group

[DCMK SS] Another inquiry for you! Could you please share some of your headcanons for Kaito/other DCMK characters you enjoy? Things you might like to see integrated into a fic written for you (no promises that I WILL integrate them, but I'm still heavily in the idea generation stage).
Mmmm, head canons, let’s see. Most of mine are garnered from the fandom, and it’s to the point that I don’t have an original one, but I do have quite a few!!
In terms of bigger ones:
High-key, I’m one of those who loves AroAce Kaito. I can’t really explain it, only that it feels right. Wish I had a way to explain better, haha.
I also strongly head canon that he has Inattentive-Type ADHD. The former because it feels right, like it fits him, and the latter is sort of the fault of projection. I have Mixed-Type ADHD, and a lot of what I see him do (such as doing other activities in class, whether that be thinking to himself or reading a newspaper, to getting easily bored and moving on to a different subject/not really paying attention to people) I find myself associating with a lot I do. I see where people can see the Hyperactivity-Type, but it feels more deliberate than an actual compulsion he has no control over.
I like to head canon that Kaito would oversleep and miss classes if it weren’t for Aoko. Sometimes she’ll just break into his house and wake him up so he won’t be late.
Kaito’s incredibly introverted and his only admitted friend is Aoko. Like, sure, there’s Saguru and Akako, but he seems to have very little interactions with any other students and is more content to sit by himself. He has to be adopted rather than being the one who is adopting (I know the manga kinda disproves this, but seeing as he doesn’t have any prevalently named friends I pretend I do not see)
However, I am also a fan of “Knows no boundaries” Kaito who is not afraid to get close to others physically. Yes, I have read many fluff fics–
Also, sort of based on canon, but I like to think Kaito doesn’t open himself up to others because he just doesn’t want to deal with the consequences of a relationship that might be taken away. Uses masks to make everyone think he’s okay, but never really opening himself up.
Kaito is not a morning person. His job aside, he seems to be the type who would get distracted and then not go to bed until later at night. Hence, he ends up oversleeping.
Aoko will often come into his house just to hang out. She rarely asks permission, just walks on in, plops on the couch, and starts movie-watching. Kaito’s had to start making excuses as to why he won’t be home because she ends up coming over a lot when her dad is working and she isn’t hanging out with friends.
While I think making it explicitly supernatural saps a little bit of the fun out of it, I do love Kaito being incredibly lucky and then Shinichi/Conan being incredibly unlucky. Just the idea that Kaito is surviving because luck as an entity is keeping him alive? The fact that Shinichi will never be out of work because said entity hates him, I guess? Beautiful.
And then there are a few smaller ones such as:
Saguru boxes (because if Shinichi is willing to play soccer to stay fit like Holmes, why wouldn’t the #1 fanboy himself do it, too?). It’s also a sport often seen associated with Europe, and I think the Ekoda gang needs a martial artist (even if it isn’t technically considered martial arts).
Shinichi and Mitsuhiko are autistic, because no child hyperfixates like that and is neurotypical.
Vermouth knows about Kaito and Chikage but wards any dangers away from them out of respect for Toichi. Whether or not that’s obeyed, however…
Chikage left Japan because without Toichi she didn’t feel comfortable sitting around and possibly being labeled as a target due to her past as Phantom Lady. Why she left Kaito? Now that, I’ve yet to figure out…
Chikage and Yukiko will sometimes hang out in person and get coffee together (bonus: they talk about their respective sons, but they’re super cryptic about what their sons are actually up to).
I’ve posted it before, but I love the idea of Saguru being the oldest, followed by Shinichi, then Kaito, and then Heiji being the youngest of the boys.
Those are the ones that come to mind! I hope some of them you might be able to use, or maybe even inspire you! While we’re here, what are some of yours? I do love seeing some of the head canons offered by the fandom and I’d be interested in the one you might have, also.
Thank you for the question and take care!!
