Mechanical Bats - Reality666Rift999 - The Mechanisms (Band) [Archive of Our Own]
tw; cursing, mentioned murder, mentioned vehicular manslaughter, mentioned physical assault, mentioned crimes, probably more, let me know what I should add!
---
“Cass!” Steph called, causing the black-haired woman to turn towards her. “Where are you going? Tim was gonna drag us all to that show thing?”
“Oh,” Cassandra hummed. “That was tonight?’
“Yep!” Stephanie replied, popping the ‘p’.
Cassandra nodded, taking a moment to think. “I will be there, I’m meeting someone. A friend. I will– hm… They will be there, too.”
“Ah, okay, okay. Be safe? And punch ‘em in the gut if they do anything!”
“They will not. …Would probably enjoy it, too… Hm.” Cass waved, and turned, leaving Stephanie confused in the manor’s foyer as Cass left Wayne Manor.
Stephanie sighed, shaking her head, before turning and heading back further into the manor.

“Good morning my dearest Gunpowder!” Marius grinned as he sat down in his plush seat. This asylum really knew how to treat their doctors!
Tim, on the other hand, looked about ready to blow the place up–which, to be fair, was their normal. They sighed dramatically, sitting upside down on the plastic chair.
“Oh, Marius. I’ve smuggled in only about fifteen pounds of plastic explosives, I’ve found answers to all that Nygma guys’ riddles and he’s run out of things to ask, how do you think? I’m bored! There aren’t even any octokittens around to keep me entertained! This place is so boring!”
“You’ve been here for a week, Gunpowder…”
“And I’m bored! Which crime even was it that got me sent here? There’s at least a dozen to pick from!”
“Uh…” Marius looked through the folder he’d been given. “Aggravated assault and first degree vehicular manslaughter! Damn, they didn’t even pick any of the good ones.”
Tim groaned loudly. “This is stupid! This place is boring! And clearly they don’t give a shit, they hired you of all people!”
“I am perfectly qualified, thank you very much! They do seem to be quite severely understaffed for the amount of criminals here, though.”
“Exactly! We should just break out of here, use those fifteen pounds of explosives and ditch this place to get back to having some fun.”
“Oh!” Marius clapped his hands. “Funny enough, that reminds me! We’re doing a show tonight at Calypso’s, you want to come? If I help you, you won’t even need to worry about using up your explosives just yet, I’ll smuggle some guns in later! The security is tight but, well, has that ever stopped us?”
“Yeah, well, you can just summon things from fuckin’ nowhere, so I think you’re an outlier.”
“Well it’s not like I can do that on purpose, that just kind of happens! A surprise, really, that they haven’t thrown me in here with the others because of my violin thing, actually.”
“My guess? They can’t because you don’t have a known criminal record.”
“So far! The game is young, we got here what, a month ago? Much to do! Many crimes to commit! And there’s superheroes, that’s gonna be fun to fuck around with. I think Jonny’s planning to start a war already!”
“Of course he is! It’s Jonny, mate doesn’t know how to do jack shit that doesn’t involve violence and bloodshed.”
“Well… yeah, it is Jonny. He’s violent and chaotic and that’s how we like him!”
“Hm. Usually. Anyway, concert tonight?”
“Right! It’s at about, uh… What kind of clock do they use around here again?”
“Twenty-four hours, generally.”
“Right! So then the concert’s at about 19:30 tonight, so I’ll come break you out around 17:45?”
“Amazing!” Gunpowder clapped excitedly. “Finally some kind of fun!”
“Of course! Now,” Marius grinned, “on to the therapy session!”
Gunpowder stared at Marius, mechanical eyes whirring as they zoomed in and out. “Don’t do this to me, Mari. Please.”
“Well it’s what I was hired to do~” Marius’s grin widened. “So, where were we last session?”
“Ugh…”

Calypso’s was a new bar and grill that seemed to spring up from nowhere, swiftly gaining popularity for its declaration of being a ‘Neutral Zone’, good drinks, and live music. Particularly, the live music.
The music was always performed by an indie band that similarly appeared out of nowhere. With their surprise arrival on the scene, they quickly gained popularity alongside the bar. Their songs were violent and cruel, speaking of endless death and destruction and war as if they were the greatest thrills one could seek. The bassist owned and ran the bar, and the band performed at other small, local bars and venues whenever Calypso’s itself was closed. Overall, besides the violence and bloodshed in their songs, they were largely unassuming.
Except for the fact that the guitarist was arrested and sentenced to five years in Arkham for driving into and killing a pedestrian before beating someone half to death with an unlit scented candle, the bassist was clearly making some kind of name for themself in the criminal underground based on the hushed whispers heard around the city, and Tim was utterly transfixed by them.
Bruce Wayne did not like them, their music was loud, bloody, and confusing and they were almost definitely all criminals. But, Tim liked them, and was dragging everyone to Calypso’s to see the band perform, and Bruce wanted more than anything to support his kids. And that’s how he found himself being dragged to Calypso’s at six in the evening, Tim talking excitedly to Steph while Jason and Dick argued about something. Probably a book, Bruce had stopped paying attention to them a while ago.
Barbara would’ve come, but she didn’t want to and had elected to have a quiet night in the Clock Tower, watching over Gotham in case of an emergency.
Either way, Bruce was using this as a perfect time to properly investigate the band running the bar. Going as Batman would only raise suspicions of the bar owners, show that he was on to whatever it was they were doing under the table; it was risky, and gathering intel would be harder to do if he had to fight off whatever security force worked for the bar.
But when Tim had invited the whole family out to see the band, well. That made things significantly easier.
Entering the bar, the first thing Bruce noticed was the smell. There was, naturally, the thick stench of alcohol wafting through the air, the thick scent of cigarette smoke, but it smelt… A lot more clean. Of all the bars he’d been to, as Batman or as Bruce Wayne, it was probably the one that smelt the nicest and the cleanest.
He wasn’t sure if that was weird or not, but he still noted it.
They weren’t very far into the building when Cassandra walked up to them, waving with a small smile. Stephanie grinned excitedly. “So, where’s your friend?” was the first thing Steph asked. Bruce sighed. Cass didn’t seem phased, though, and simply offered a small smile.
“They will be here,” she said, nodding. “C’mon, I’ve got us a table.”
Tim fell into step with Cass quickly, the two leading the way through the bar while the rest of them followed.
“This is going to be so cool,” Tim said, grinning and snapping his fingers. Cass nodded, that small smile still on her lips.
“It’s going to be very fun.”
“I wonder what they’re going to play? I’ve got a few ideas…” Tim continued to ramble, Cass nodding along while leading them to the booth she’d picked out. Bruce bit his tongue, and let them talk about the band in peace. (Tim rarely smiled so brightly anymore, still a bit upset about Damian’s arrival– he deserved a few things to smile about.)
Bruce surveyed the other patrons, keeping an eye out for anyone familiar or any of his typical rogues. Bruce didn’t see anyone out of the ordinary, and sat down. The booth had a nearly perfect view of the stage, which seemed to be in the process of being set up. There was a booth ahead of them that was closer, but no one was sitting in it yet. There were several menus placed around the table, and Bruce decided to survey it. There were a lot of strange items, ones that he wouldn’t have expected to see at a dingy, brand new bar-and-grill that just popped up. Alongside the standard items– cheeseburgers, nachos, fried pickles, and beer– there were things like steak, old, well-aged wine, and baked alaskas. It was… odd.
“So…” Dick said, tapping his fingers along the table, “you’ve talked a bit about this band, but what exactly are we signing up for?”
Tim just grinned. “Oh you’ll see.”
Dick just rolled his eyes. Bruce glanced around at the other patrons again, and at the stage. A few people had gathered on it. They appeared to be talking about something. One of the people on the stage was tall, wearing a long, pinstriped trench coat, while one of the others was fidgeting with one of the microphone wires in a brown leather vest, and a white shirt, and the other was very stiff and wooden in their movements, wearing a uniform that Bruce assumed was some kind of military uniform that he just wasn’t familiar with. Other than their outfits, nothing stuck out about them as odd, and so Bruce turned away.
Jason was demanding something from Tim, probably more of an explanation, while Steph stared intensely at the menu as if she wasn’t going to order the nachos, like she always did when at a new place that served them. Dick was also observing the menu with intensity, while Cass watched the stage with interest.
“You can’t just bring us here with no explanations and expect us to sit idly by!” Jason proclaimed.
“I can, and I did,” Tim replied. “Besides, out of everyone, I think you’ll like their songs the most. Maybe they’ll appeal to Dick’s inner theatre kid–”
“Hey!”
“–but I think they’ll appeal to you a lot. There’s a lot of bloodshed!”
“I don’t only like violence,” Jason wrinkled his nose. “I don’t even necessarily like violence. It’s just that it’s useful sometimes.”
“Well, there’s a lot of classic literature drawn from, in their songs, too. There.”
Jason looked like he wanted to hop across the table and strangle Tim, but he refrained, which Bruce was thankful for. A waiter stopped by, and asked if they were ready to order something.
Everyone simply got water or sweet tea to drink, and Steph ordered the extra-spicy nachos, Dick got a double-patty cheeseburger, and Cass got mac-and-cheese. The waiter took their orders with a sure nod, and disappeared off somewhere else. Everything was going smoothly, so far. It was calm, and there wasn’t anything odd going on around them. It put Bruce on edge– when everything was too calm, too nice. Something had to go wrong, soon.
Bruce glanced at the stage, and saw several more people having gathered, tuning instruments and getting set up for the show. As he looked over the stage, one of the people up there–the bassist, he assumed from the instrument across their shoulders–glanced at him, directly in his eyes, and grinned. It was only for a moment, but it sent chills down Bruce’s spine, and Bruce tore his eyes away.
Cass turned back to the others, and announced, “The show’s starting soon.”
Tim jumped and turned towards the stage, grinning excitedly.
As everyone’s attention drifted towards the stage, the person in the brown leather vest grabbed a microphone, saying into it, “Test, test. Our audio working alright?” The sound echoed throughout the bar, but it didn’t break or crack in any way. Bruce followed the person’s eyes towards a booth towards the center of the room, where someone was seemingly working their audio. They gave a thumbs up, and the one in the vest turned to the one in the probably-a-military-uniform. “Toy Soldier, test that mic for us.”
“Will do, Old Chap!” The stiff one saluted, and leaned into the microphone to sing a couple of scales.
The band continued doing a few tests, until they were satisfied that everything was working and sounded alright. With those out of the way, the one at the microphone in the center-front stage, nodded and started talking again.
“Right, well, I must say– welcome one and all! Returning patrons and new faces alike! I’m sure you know the drill by now!” They gestured to one of the string players, who started playing a vibrant and energetic tune that was quickly joined in on by the rest of the band.
And with that, they started singing.
“Like whiskey laced with gasoline, We’re deadly when we’re drunk
So shut your face and settle down, You sneering little punk!
‘Cause space is vast, You are small, It’s black and bitter cold
The book is lying open,
There are tales to be told!”
The seemingly lead-singer was grinning wildly, as he sang.
“The fire is burning lower and the Stars are shining bright
We’ve stories grim as pistol lead to tell to you tonight!
So grab yourself a mug of beer, gin or vodka, hold it near
The book is lying open,
There are tales to be told!”
Tim and Cass were clapping along, as was most of the bar.
“Killers, renegades, liars and thieves!” The lead singer called out, “Welcome! For those of you unfamiliar, we are the Mechanisms! The Crew of the Starship Aurora, roaming through the universe in search of adventure, seeking fun, enjoying a good spot of violence here and there, and looking, most of all, for a good story. But also, mostly the violence.” They shrugged and grinned. “Let me introduce to you my Crew! First off, we have Drumbot Brian, our ship’s pilot and–naturally–our drummer!” There was a cheer from the crowd, and the person in a top hat with brass-painted– painted? From where Bruce was sitting, he almost couldn’t tell if Drumbot Brian had face paint on or if he was actually made of brass– smiled and waved, grinning. “There’s Raphaella la Cognizi, our keys player and resident science officer!” The one behind the keyboard jumped slightly, and smiled widely, waving as her mechanical wings fluttered. “And of course, our ship’s quote-un-quote ‘doctor’, Baron Marius von Raum on violin! He’s neither a baron, nor a doctor.” One of the violinists grinned and waved with a black, metal hand, before returning to playing. “My dumbass sister, on viola, Nastya Rasputina!” The woman on the viola flipped the lead singer off, adjusted her glasses, and returned to her playing as well. The crowd still cheered, though. “Our beloved and be-loathed archivist, Ivy Alexandria, on just a truly unfathomable amount of instruments.” The redhead waved, a small smile on their face.
“On harp and lyre, our Navigator Lyfrassir Edda!” The dark skinned person sitting next to a decent sized harp waved as well, their silver hair glowing slightly iridescent under the light, looking at them directly for too long left colorful dark-spots in Bruce’s vision and gave him a headache. And returning from the shortest hiatus ever, our Master-at-Arms and guitarist, Gunpowder Tim makes her daring return!” There was an uproarious cheer throughout the bar, and Gunpowder Tim smiled, giving small bows around the room with a wild grin. Her presence caught Bruce’s eye, as she was the one that was supposed to be in Arkham for manslaughter. He had to make a note to call Gordon, to check on the asylum and make sure no one else had broken out once they were done here… “The Toy Soldier is… here, for some reason, to sing and play the glockenspiel and mandolin. I don’t think I’ll ever understand it.” Jonny gestured to the stiff one, who waved excitedly.
“I’m just happy to be involved here!” The Toy Soldier declared.
“Yes, we’re aware. And of course, everyone give a warm, warm welcome, to our host, the owner of this here bar, our dearest quartermaster and bassist, Ashes O’Reilly!” There was another cheer, and the bassist grinned, though they didn’t react much more than that. “And lastly, though never the least, there’s myself! Your humble narrator, Jonny d’Ville, captain of our amazing starship!”
And then, as if it was some kind of cue that Bruce didn’t get, several people in the bar (including Cass and Tim) and on the stage yelled out, “First Mate!”
Jonny d’Ville sighed dramatically, but there was a subtle smirk on his face. “Really, I should expect this by now, no one ever respects my authority.”
“You don’t really have any,” Ashes said, “here in my bar. Technically.”
“Oh, fuck off.”
They let the music play for a moment, before Jonny began singing again.
The show continued on for a while, playing an album that Tim had excitedly called ‘Once Upon a Time (in Space)’, that didn’t last nearly as long as Bruce was expecting. It was a retelling of several classic fairy tales, set in a sci-fi, war-torn world. And while Bruce definitely wouldn’t call it anything he found particularly interesting, the story was good and the atmosphere was strangely warm. (It was a bonus that Cass and Tim were getting so excited and clapping or cheering along to the music, that they enjoyed it so much.) Their food arrived shortly after the first song, ‘Tales to be Told’, according to Cass, and it was surprisingly good. Especially for a new bar run by someone who didn’t seem to exist a few weeks ago. As the concert wore on and ended, there was a loud cheer, and the band started to put things away.
Ashes put their bass away, and Bruce watched as the possibly-metal man approached them. They had a conversation, before Drumbot Brian rolled his eyes and bowed slightly to them (despite being nearly a foot and a half taller than them), before walking away, and then Ashes turned around and locked eyes with Bruce again, grinning.
They walked over, and Cass grinned as they approached. Tim’s eyes widened, when he saw them approaching. Ashes leaned on the pillar that their booth was attached to, grinning a bit at Cassandra.
“Hey, Cassie,” they said, surveying the table, “so this the surprise you mentioned earlier?”
Cass nodded. “Lucky coincidence,” she said. “I forgot they were coming tonight.”
“Ah.” Ashes grinned. Steph swung her head wildly between the two of them, from Ashes to Cass and back to the bassist.
“Cass? Your friend is the fucking owner?!” Steph asked.
Cass grinned and nodded.
“Yep,” Ashes said, grinning and slipping one of their hands into their pockets. “Ashes O’Reilly, owner of Calypso’s, and a friend of Cassie’s. They/them pronouns, preferably. Nice to meet you all.” Ashes offered a hand to everyone, Tim was still shell shocked, but everyone else was mostly able to shake their hand. Ashes offered their hand to Bruce, and he hesitated, before gripping their hand tightly. Their hand was almost uncomfortably warm.
“Bruce Wayne,” Bruce replied, “nice to meet you as well.”

I love the idea that only the kids are allowed access. Like adult villains and heroes both try to hack into or visit amity, both for different reasons, but Phantom doesn’t appreciate either.
He wants Amity to be a safe space for children with powers, and no adult heroes are gonna be able to put restrictions on that, no matter how unchecked they think it is.
I’d like to think Danny has Cujo be a guard dog and just says fetch when someone needs to be removed from the premises. Many heroes are seen being carried away like a chew toy by a giant glowing green dog. If they make it past Cujo they have to deal with Fright Knight.
Basically yeah, and if something does go wrong in amity, Phantom just gives the kids a field trip to the ghost zone.
I’d like to think Billy Batson joins, first for spy purposes, but then he joins for reals because he is genuinely getting support and he’s so very relieved to be able to talk to people who understand, even if they don’t know he’s Captain marvel.
I feel like that happens to the robins and other heroes being pressured to go to Amity to be spies. Batman’s just worried, yadda yadda, but on the way back the kids realize they really don’t want amity to change. They don’t want stupid adults who weren’t child heroes messing with their support system.
Maybe they come up with a lie that they’re magically unallowed to talk about it. Like they pretend to say it but spout gibberish or something.
Any kid heroes with people after them or were framed are also welcome to go to amity. It’s a safe zone where no one is allowed to fight and stuff. No arresting children without proper evidence and idk probably other things is a good rule.
Idk there’s just so many ways Danny could offer support here. Like Tim going off to prove batman isn’t dead by himself?? Nope. Phantom just calls up CW to fish batman out of the time stream. All done
Like and Survive! (DC x DP)
Everyone knows who Phantom is. He was one of the very first heroes though he inexplicably chose to dedicate his life (metaphorically) to micromanaging the hell out of some random town no one has ever heard of. He's a specialist hero, only really useful for ghost stuff. He comes every time someone contacts him for help but it's only happened a few times in all of his years of operation.
Then, kid heroes become a thing. Robin, once perpetually hidden beneath the shadow of the bat emerges into the metropolis sun just in time to make the front page.
When Batman's child-raising skills are called into question, Kid Flash is brought out at a press release by Flash to show that these exceptional children are around. They just aren't common knowledge for their own health (aside from the villains - being a child star wrecks your brain).
A few villains do come forward and say "no, the sidekicks will go out on their own if their hero doesn't let them. And they have all the powers and none of the restraint. Please don't separate them."
(Batman and Robin are both very flattered that all their rogues think they have powers. Robin is ✨glowing✨ with pride.)
Cyborg calls Robin at 3am. He asks if he's seen the new 'BooTube' page.
Phantom has set up his own website. It's a dark and moody ripoff of YouTube with 1 channel. His.
Introduction Video: Transcript Hi guys, I can't lie to you, I was as up-in-arms as anyone when I saw what people are now calling "The Robin Reveal". But then I remembered that I started my hero work when I was mentally and physically fourteen years old...
Danny doesn't mention he was also chronologically 14 at the time. Secret identities and all.
...and I had no mentor, no training and no backup. It was just me and two humans, neither of whom even had powers at that time. I understand the call, in a way that none of the non-hero people criticising you could ever hope to comprehend. I'm glad to see most of you fellow child-heroes have an experienced adult watching your back. But if you don't. If there's even one of you out there who need a mentor, consider Amity Park open for business, and consider adding my number to your speedial. I'm not like those people in interviews saying "Oh, someone needs to help the children!" I am helping you, I am helping you whenever you need with whatever you want.
The ghost swallows and seemingly forces down his brimming sincerity.
And for those of you who do already have backup? Consider checking back here. I'm going over my old reports from my first few years on the streets to see what I most needed to hear, and what I wished I knew sooner. Hopefully no one else will have to learn what I know the hard way.
You know how to fight, this channel won't be for that. This is about coping with secret identities, and the messed up situations that can only happen to a vigilante or hero.
Anyways, the first video is already ready to be edited so in a few days I'll be back here to discuss what you do when you've been cloned. How to deal with that emotionally and physically. My clone isn't very well known outside of my town but I think she'll add a great perspective!
Within weeks, without his knowledge, Danny is somehow remote-mentoring heroes of all ages.

Dc x DP Prompt #8: Best Friend’s Brother
Preface: this prompt can be used with different characters but I’m writing it as Dead on Main bc that’s my favorite. Also the colleges I mention are real colleges from the DCU
~~~
Danny Fenton was 18 when he moved to Gotham for college.
It was the only place with a half decent engineering program that would take a kid with his record; drop in grades, unexplained absences, missing class, a disciplinary record, etc. Plus there was a decent saturation of both magic and ectoplasm in Gotham’s air. After he got accepted he decided to tell his parents he was Phantom. They reacted surprisingly well all things considered. They were horrified to learn they’d been hunting their son but it quickly turned into acceptance to listen to what he had to tell them. Now they turned their obsession from hunting ghosts to learning more about ghost more humanely. He also managed to get his former rouges to agree to call off any major shenanigans in favor of less destructive outlets. (He got Ember a TikTok and a YouTube channel, he set up a drag racing circuit in the realms for Johnny and Kitty, let Technus enter the internet as long as he stayed within Amity’s grid or help Ember manage her stuff, allowed Desiree grant wishes for Make a Wish Foundation kids so long as she didn’t horribly twist them, etc.)
Now with the town not at constant risk of danger and his parents agreeing to really handle any rouge ghosts, Danny could leave Amity with a clear conscience. His friends were also growing up and heading to their own colleges. Tucker was heading to Ivy University in New England, which rivaled MIT in terms technological prestige, and Sam decided on Vandermeer University in Pittsburg, which had a reputation for being a very liberal, anti-authority campus. Although their trio would be spread out, Danny found comfort in the fact that they’d all moved from the Midwest to the Northeast.
With promises to stay in touch a visit. Danny got set up in GCU’s dorms, ready to move into the next chapter of his life.
~
Danny Fenton was 20 when Tim Drake (age 19 but nearing 20) officially became one of his best friends.
They had been introduced to each other by their mutual friend Sebastian Ives for a new Warlocks and Warriors campaign. Their friendship extended beyond WnW when they ended up on the same Applied Physics and Mechanics class. It was cemented when they got pair up for a project in class and had to spend lots of time around each other.
Danny didn’t mind that Tim tended to be a bit flaky and Tim didn’t mind that Danny was possibly not 100% human. They didn’t ask each other too many questions about that stuff. They knew the other had something odd about him and that was fine with them. It was nice to have a causal friend they could be normal with, without being questioned about their more peculiar behaviors.
They officially became best friends when the built a Rube Goldberg machine with a working trebuchet within an hour of the three they had to complete it for their Applied Phys-Mech final. Danny introduced Tim to Sam, Tucker and Jazz. Tim introduced him to Steph, Tam, and Cass. They texted and hung out fairly often. They truly did consider each other one their best friends.
~
Danny Fenton is 22 when he meets Tim’s family.
Tim’s 21st birthday is coming up and he has plans with his family the day of and is going out with his friends, including a couple from out of town, that night. They want to take him out for his first drink and it’s fortunate timing since it’s the weekend so nobody has to worry about classes. Everyone who was going was already informed that Tim would be spending most of the day with his family before Steph and Cass would bring to the club everyone was meeting up at. Which is why it’s purely a coincidence when he runs into them at BatBurger during the lunch rush.
Danny had just picked up the part-time job to earn a little extra cash to pay for his hobbies. Tim new about it but didn’t know the exact location he worked. That’s why they were both presently surprised when they heard each others voices in the drive through. When they pulled up to window Danny saw his friend leaning over a tired looking black-haired man, trying to stick his head out of the drivers window to give Danny a maniacal grin.
He quickly introduced the other passengers of the car as his dad, Bruce, and three of his brothers Dick, Jason, and Duke. He mentioned he had a fourth brother, Damian, who was still at home. Danny couldn’t really see everyone all that well on account of they were inside a car but he happily greeted them as well. They laughed and Danny wished Tim a happy birthday saying he’d see him at his celebration later tonight before handing them their food. He could the rowdy boys ribbing their brother as the car drove away and Danny resumed his work.
That incident seemed to have opened a gate because now Tim felt more comfortable inviting him over when his brothers were still around the house. He occasionally talked about his family more and Danny returned the favor letting snippets of his own family spill a little more. Occasionally, he’d see Tim’s family outside of his interactions with Tim.
He’d run into Damian, and sometimes Bruce or Dick was with him, at the museum or in the park while the younger had been walking his dog and stopped to say hi a couple of times. He chatted with Dick a couple of times when they were both in line to get coffee at a cafe. He saw Duke on a college tour once and waved at him.
The family member he probably saw the most other that Tim (and by extension Cass) was actually Jason. He’d ended up ditching BatBurger to get some more practical experience at an apprenticeship at the auto shop Jason went to to get his motorcycle serviced. The two of them got along pretty well and would often make conversation when Jason was waiting on his bike to be ready or to get his bill.
At first is was small talk about little things like how he and Tim were doing in class or how their days were going but they soon grew to have genuine interests in each other. Jason let Danny talk about space and mechanics and even gave his own thoughts sometimes, once helping Danny realize he was over complicating the circuit board of the device he was building. In return Danny let Jason ramble to him about literature, even taking the initiative to read a book Jason mentioned so he could talk to him about it better. Their conversation tended to be on the briefer side but were always enjoyable to both parties.
Danny actually liked being around Jason a lot but didn’t really bring that fact up a lot around Tim as it didn’t seem necessary. Tim was pretty glad that Danny got along with his family but he preferred to keep them in separate places in his mind. Danny knew and respected that, only really mentioning that he’d seen them recently and that they’d told him to say hi on their behalf (or die in Damian’s case occasionally).
~
Tim Drake was 22 when he came to a horrific realization.
Well, perhaps horrific was a bit of an exaggeration. Tim wasn’t necessarily horrified by the revelation. In all honesty he didn’t know how to feel. He felt an odd mixture of protectiveness, possessiveness, confusion, and optimism(?).
You see, Tim and Danny had been hanging out in the campus center, studying and goofing off when he got a text from Jason saying he was coming to pick him up for family dinner at the manor since he was closest and Dick was busy picking up Duke and Damian from their after school clubs.
“What’s up?” Danny asked him curiously.
Tim set his phone on the table and started putting his stuff away. “My brother is coming to pick me up for family dinner so I gotta head out soon.”
“Ah well I should probably get going too. Tell Dick I said hi.”
“Actually, it’s Jason. Dick is picking up Duke and Damian,” he said shoving his textbook into his bag.
“Oh? That’s nice of him. Hey do you wanna just head out together?” Danny asked, fidgeting with his hoodie strings.
Tim noticed a slight strain in Danny’s voice at the mention of Jason but didn’t comment. He just nodded his head sure and walked outside with Danny. They got out to the street when Tim realized he’d left his phone in the library. He faced palmed and asked Danny if he could hold his stuff so it wouldn’t slow him down as he ran back to the campus center to get his phone. Danny agreed to and hold his stuff and wait for Jason while Tim went back.
After getting his phone Tim started heading back to where he left Danny when he saw that Jason had arrived that Jason had arrived and was talking to Danny. He was about to call out to them when he noticed several things in quick succession. Danny was fidgeting with his hoodie, something he tended to do when nervous. The tips of Danny’s ears were a light shade of pink (it isn’t cold out yet?). Danny looked deeply absorbed in his conversation with Jason in a way that reminded Tim of how he talked about space. And Jason seemed just as absorbed in the conversation as well.
The gears in Tim’s head went into overdrive and he realized ‘Ah- Danny has a crush on Jason’. His eyes widened as his head whipped around to examine Jason again. He saw a look of genuine fondness in his eyes. Thus Tim was confronted with the aforementioned horrific realization and complicated feelings. Tim didn’t know whether to laugh, cry, or both.
‘My dumbass best friend has a crush on my brother. And worse(?), my idiot brother returns those feelings.’
Kaiju Week in Review (February 18-24, 2024)
Godzilla Rivals: Mothra vs. M.O.G.U.E.R.A. begins with a standout fight between Mothra and Ebirah. From there, however, the Queen of the Monsters spends most of the story on the sidelines, with a brawl involving Mechagodzilla, Garuda, Jet Jaguar, and M.O.G.U.E.R.A. over the fate of her egg taking center stage. A mech fight on that scale is unusual for a Godzilla comic, and despite the misleading title, it's a decent issue. Writer Johnny Parker II sat down for a lengthy interview with Kevin Derendorf and Raf Enshohma this week; I haven't had time to listen to the whole thing, but I do know he talks about his valiant efforts to put Medical Jet Jaguar from Godzilla Island in the comic.
Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong #5 also released this week. Afraid it didn't leave much of an impression on me; the book is juggling a lot of narrative threads now, and I don't see how it wraps them all up satisfactorily with just two issues left. I would've liked to see a more focused cast (and not just because it takes forever to list all the DC characters on Wikizilla each issue, haha). They also finally mention Monarch in this issue, which only makes the absence of the Monsterverse's human characters more conspicious.
Between Dune: Part Two and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, March was already going to be a great month at the movies for giant monster fans, but they'll now be joined by an anime classic: The End of Evangelion. GKIDS is bringing it to North American theaters on March 17 and 20 (a Sunday and a Wednesday, respectively). All showings will be in Japanese with English subtitles. This is not, as some reporting has suggested, the first time the film has ever played in the region—I found a Facebook event page for a 2019 screening in Omaha, for instance—but it is certainly the first major release. Be forewarned that if you haven't seen Neon Genesis Evangelion, you'll be confused out of your mind, as the film serves as an alternate ending for the final two episodes. But you've got time to get caught up.
Like many a Godzilla movie before it, Godzilla x Kong is leaking like a sieve, with a number of alleged screenshots of the Titans now making the rounds online. I normally wouldn't mention such things in this column, but they show a couple of characters who haven't been officially confirmed to be in the movie yet. So here's a warning to be on your guard if you're spoiler-shy.
Vat: A Bit of Game Dev History
So, This post is SORTA filler, not gonna lie. I'm finishing up the (admittedly simple version of the) biome map, which when it's finished is when the world-building can REALLY take off. There's definitely some more mechanical stuff I can talk about but I'm taking it easy this afternoon so I'll probably save that for some time soon. Vat isn't the first TTRPG I've worked on. I mean, nothing I've ever worked on was anything other than a solo project anyways, so that point is sorta nil. However, Vat is the first one I've actually turned into something cohesive and started to talk about with other people. One of the first iterations, I think I called it Fodder, was probably the origin point of the overall military focus of Vat. It kept elements of worldbuilding that I enjoy, such as hardsuits and body modifications, but it was more... grounded, and significantly less developed. There wasn't really an overall setting I was developing. I also worked on one that had players be individual members of some sort of mech or tank crew. This one had some worldbuilding, players were fucked up mutated humans, but it didn't go very far. I still kept the vision and am using it in Vat, though! One of the "Squad Archetypes" is the Vehicle Crew, where you have to fill the various positions of the vehicles to use them. All of these ideas had elements of wargaming, mainly in movement and using miniatures at its core, but Vat is when I decided to draw the focus just a little bit away from the individual and put it on the group. I've always had a fascination with teamwork in games, specifically in players controlling a team. Some video games went this route, such as... what was the Mandalore Gaming video, Star Wars Republic Commando. That type of thing. I think one of the first Rainbow Sixes had a similar idea, and the games that are like X-Com also inspired it. Not to mention wargaming in general. I wanted to take that a different direction, though. Make it, well, multiplayer. When I was first figuring out the setting of Vat, I wanted to have players be henchmen for supervillains and the like. I have a general plan of still doing this, actually! Maybe making a fictitious version of Bor that exists within the setting of Foramen that's akin to the Marvel or DC universes. A setting within the setting that has superheroes and supervillains. That'll definitely be WAY down the line, though. Anyways, that's all for now! More posts probably coming next week at the earliest, I have a fairly packed schedule over the next few days.
Unusual Duck Behavior
Author: Authobot2001 Genre: Fanfiction Fandom: Transformers Rating: E Warning: None Pairing: Drift X Jamie (OC) Description: Jamie detours on the way to the beach, resulting in Drift running after her. Jamie takes Drift to the river where ducks swim. The two observe unusual behavior from the ducks.
@theocxcanonweek day 3; out in nature
Seven friends walk through the woods, heading to the beach. Sideswipe is displeased with the lengthy route through the woods. “Who made this route and why must we use it?” He complains. “Quit complaining,” Sunstreaker tells him. Jamie runs ahead of the six. With her powers to sense things around her, they wonder what she’s running towards. Trusting it’s not an intruder or Decepticon, as Jamie would have mentioned. Jamie’s poor mental state has Drift running after her. “Uh, do we follow?” Sideswipe asks. “No, we continue to the beach,” Crosshairs replies, “I think they’ll be fine.”
Drift catches up enough to see Jamie running. Her reddish orange gi helps make her easier to see. He panics seeing she turned to a path that meets the river. He picks up the pace, worried she’s not looking to walk along the river.
Jamie stops in the middle of the path. Still a little way from the river. She knows Drift is following her. “What are you doing?” The mech asks once he catches up. Jamie surprised Drift by taking his hand and leading him down the path.
As the two walk down the path, they hear ducks. Drift realizes he should have known Jamie was running toward animals. The two find a spot to watch the ducks without scaring them. They don’t realize some ducks are watching them but resume their duck chatter. They observe a duck emerge from the river and approach them. Standing two feet away from the two humans, the duck quacks repeatedly. “This is unusual,” Drift observes, “I’d expect this back at the point in the park in DC. Those ducks see us often, but we’ve never visited the ducks here. They can’t be used to humans.” “I doubt she’s telling us to leave, either.” The female duck walks closer to the two. Enough that Jamie can pick her up. “You are an odd duck,” Jamie comments as the duck enjoys being held.
Jamie walks toward the river. Not a single duck panics, even as she sits by the river and a talker human approaches. “These ducks are unusual,” Drift comments while sitting next to Jamie. Some ducks leave the pond and join the two. Drift gets his phone out to take pictures. “Ok, we’ve been here for twenty minutes. We’re supposed to be at the beach and at this point, I’m sure our friends are worried,” Drift says, “sorry, ducks. We’ll come back.”
The six friends have the beach set up for the planned afternoon stay and are only in their swimming attire, but want to wait before eating lunch. The friends hear about the ducks’ strange behavior and want to go to the river. Opting for a detour on the way back home.
(A/N): You know what, I'm in an angst/hurt/comfort mood today, so I think I'm gonna write a self-insert Lego Ninjago Movie story where Cole opens up about his past relationship with his ex-boyfriend. (Sorry, Cole, but I'm putting you through hell today. 😈) Also, I may have gotten this idea from listening to the nightcore version of "Hoodie". 👀
Hoodie (Movie!Cole x S/I)
It was a typical day in Ninjago City. The teacher droned on about algebraic equations, and Cole and Eliza sat in the back, sharing earbuds and not paying any attention to the lesson.
"Ugh," Eliza groaned. "Math is soooo hard and boring!"
Cole nodded in agreement. "Yeah. It sucks that we're probably gonna have a test on it tomorrow."
Then, he looked out the door and noticed someone walk past. He quickly turned his head away with a solemn expression on his face. Eliza noticed this and frowned. "Hey, you okay?" She asked.
"Yeah, yeah, I'm fine," Cole replied, not making eye contact with her.
Finally, the teacher dismissed everyone, and to no one's surprise, the test was indeed tomorrow. Go figure.
Eliza and Cole walked out of the classroom, and Eliza was infodumping about a new Red Hot Chili Peppers album that was soon to come out. Cole nodded and said "mhm" and "yeah" every couple of sentences with the same look on his face from earlier. Eliza stopped and frowned. "Hey... do you need to talk about... whatever is going on in your head?"
Cole opened his mouth to speak, but then he caught sight of the same guy that passed by the classroom earlier. The guy was laughing with Chen before the two shared a sweet kiss and parted ways. Cole’s face darkened at the sight.
"Cole?" Eliza called, her voice cracking a bit. "Are you okay?"
Cole sighed and said, "See you tomorrow, I guess. Or whatever."
Then, he stormed off. Eliza ran after him. "Wait! Cole! What's wrong? You're scaring me!"
Cole stopped, but he didn't face her. "I can't believe he's with Chen now."
Eliza looked at him with both worry and confusion. "Cole, what the hell are you talking about?"
Cole sighed. "Jesse. He... is my ex. We used to do everything together. We listened to music together, sang together, hell, we swapped hoodies! But things went downhill when I revealed to him that I am the Earth Ninja."
~Flashback~
Jesse and Cole were chatting away, infodumping to each other about their favorite bands, then Cole noticed Garmadon's mech walking towards Jesse. He pushed Jesse out of the way and landed on top of him. Both boys blushed, then Jesse's expression changed into an angry one.
"COLE, WHAT THE HELL?" He shouted.
Then, he turned and saw Garmadon's mech. He looked back to where Cole was only to find that he wasn't there. Then, another mech walked towards Garmadon's, blaring loud rock music. Was that... AC/DC?
Jesse watched in shock as the mech that was blaring music attacked the other mech, the two mechs battling it out. Garmadon's mech walked away afterwards, clearly defeated. Then, a guy with a black GI hopped out of his mech and made his way towards Jesse. "Hey, you okay?" He asked.
Jesse blinked. Wait a minute... the Earth Ninja?!?! He screamed. The Earth Ninja panicked and tried to calm Jesse down.
"Hey, hey, it's okay, it's me!" Then, he pulled off his mask and revealed that he was... Cole?!?!
Jesse blinked again. "Wait, you're the Earth Ninja? AND YOU DIDN'T EVEN TELL ME?!?!"
"Jesse..." Cole started, but Jesse stopped him.
"Save it. I don't want to hear your bullshit excuses. We're through."
Then, he stormed off and left Cole there.
~Flashback over~
"And ever since that day, we pretty much have been avoiding each other." Cole sighed. "I just can't believe that he has the balls to replace me with that asshat Chen."
"Oh Cole..." Eliza said, engulfing him into a hug. "I'm so sorry. You didn't deserve that."
Cole smiled and hugged her back. "Thank you, Eliza." He planted a kiss on her head and laughed. "I actually still have his hoodie." He sighed. "But I don't know what to do with it. Every time I see it, I think of him, and... and..." His voice got shaky as tears welled up in his eyes.
Eliza smiled comfortingly and gently rubbed his back. "Hey... tell you what, I know a place nearby where you can donate the hoodie. Would you like to do that?"
Cole smiled as his tears started to dry. "Yeah. It's probably for the best. Maybe it's time for me to let go."
Eliza smiled and nuzzled him. "There you go. It's gonna be okay. I'm here for you." She pecked his cheek. "Always."
Cole blushed and smiled. "Alright, let's go get rid of that damn hoodie already."
(A/N): I hope you enjoyed! 😊 This is actually my first self-insert story. Plus, I headcanon Cole as bi, and I wanted to represent that while also giving him an angsty backstory.
Comics this week?
Since no one asked last week, and this week was pretty light for me anyway, I'll throw in a couple from last week that I want to talk about.
Action Comics #1048 - I love Bibbo, I love the concept of this ex-tough guy who manages to bond with Superman, and I'm fond of the trope where the guy with a checkered past has a way with kids. Heh that callback to Bendis was fantastic and well implemented. Perkins' design for Metallo was a solid evolution of the basic Terminator knockoff look, I'd be ok with this being his appearance going forward as long as it got a better color scheme, but Lex says it's just a stopgate measure. Speaking of Lex and Metallo I love how Metallo was able to get under Lex's skin, and then seeing the lengths Lex will go to get Metallo back under his thumb reminds you what a bastard he is.
Catwoman: Lonely City #4 - Pitch perfect Catwoman story. She sacrifices so much out of love for Bruce, only to discover that the mission is always going to come first for him. Even his dying words to her were just an attempt to come back so he could fight his war for a little while longer. First story to really make me buy Selina and Eddie as a couple, and Chiang's art was beautiful the whole way through. Well worth the wait between issues.
DC Mech #4 - No clue why reviewers are tearing this a new one, it remains sold and entertaining for me.
DC vs. Vampires #10 - Never in a million years would I have guessed that this would be the best follow up to Russel's depiction of Jayna in his Wonder Twins mini.
Detective Comics #1065 - Remains enjoyable but the decompression is really dragging this story out.
Human Target #8 - Weakest issue of the series thus far, almost like a recap issue which feels pointless given this is meant to be read in a trade.
A.X.E. Judgement Day #6 - Probably the best Marvel event since Hickman's Secret Wars, and one that managed to shake up the status quo in a way that feels meaningful, while still not fundamentally upending the status quo. Even this limited application of Krakoa resurrections for humans feels like it's on borrowed time given Fall of X is coming next year. I enjoyed this event as an attempt at doing an event that still gives the end of the world threat, while also providing an opportunity to do more small scale storytelling about the people in the MU (not that many writers took advantage of it). The judgements offered an opportunity for characters to examine themselves and really ask the question if they were living up to what they were meant to be. Most writers just used them to shill their characters as awesome, only Gillen himself actually failed anyone, and that was disappointing if unsurprising.
Strange #7 - Glad that we skipped right over the angst and got right to Clea and Strange reconciling and joining forces.
Batman #129 - Incredibly dumb but no less enjoyable for being a story where Batman builds a robot that can solo the DCU (again). Backup continues to be the better story, which isn't a slight against the main story.
Poison Ivy #6 - Hm. One of the reasons I enjoyed this was that it seemed committed to Ivy being a villain. This issue pulls back on that and I can't say I'm a fan.
Gotham City: Year One #2 - I'm a little offput whenever writers establish that there were a bunch of expies of famous Batman characters before the time of Batman, I think that detracts from the insanity of the super-crime era Batman ushers in, but this remains the good Tom King shit.
X-Men Red #8 - Ewing lays out Brand's plan, and picks up and delivers on a Hickman plot threat that the man himself isn't around to do any longer. Doesn't do it in the way Hickman planned I'd wager, but it's still a "holy shit" reveal that delivers a sense of stakes and scope that has been lacking since Hickman departed.
Joker: The Man Who Stopped Laughing #2 - I picked this up initially just because Rosenberg seems to be getting a push at DC, and surprisingly I've enjoyed it. I'm guessing one of the two Jokers is Clayface.
The New Champion of Shazam #3 - Wish this book was less grounded so we could see Shaner cut loose with the magic, but Campbell's voice for Mary remains on point. That teacher might as well have walked up to Mary and told her hey I'm the villain who has your parents.
Hulk #10 - Yawn. Too derivative of past stories, obviously there's the Planet Hulk repeat, but the whole "Bruce is suffering from terminal brain damage that will kill him" is something I've seen in Jason Aaron and Jenkin's runs before too.
I saw your post asking for ideas to write so here.
Transformers
Crack Fic
Literally do anything bizarre that your mind can think of.
You do not know just how bizarre my mind can get.
You want crack! I'LL GIVE YOU CRACK!
DC x Tranformers crossover with the Batfam being reborn as Cybertronians in the IDW universe.
Batman is a seeker or beastformer named Batsong. Fucking massive black mech whose wings fold around him like his cape used to. Often mistaken for a Con due to his red optics. Firmly Neutral. Nightwing's name stays the same but he is a tiny fucking jet, fucking minibot acrobat. Very pretty even as a cybertronian, black plating with blue details and the worst case of cyberhound optics. Firmly Neutral.
Red Hood is a grounder, possibly tank former. Heavily armored tank former. Probably got Empurata due to talking out against Senate before the war. Probably has a name like Wrecker or Roadforce. Used to be a simple truck or carrier vehicle until he got Empurataed and became a gladiator and got Upgrades.
Red Robin is a motorcycle or tricycle. Named something pretentious like Kinesio, totally changes it later to something like Phantasm because moves silently. Probably was a Towers mech like Mirage and one of the few that survived the Towers falling. Red with black details and silver optics set in a golden faceplate, slender frame most likely built to be a future consort of some kind under his Creators orders.
Robin is Batsong's own creation, so he is a tiny batlike seeker or beastformer like his creator. Probably named Echo cause even in this Bruce isn't good at naming things. Tiny little brightly colored ball of rage with a very vicious bit. Sparkling born in war.
(I will think of Duke, Cass and Steph later this is getting long)
Anyway Bats still manages to adopt each one of them and they get separated because of the war. Bats goes on an epic quest to find his children whilst trying to survive a war torn universe. Plus both sides are gunning for him cause he is a Neutral.
Built by SHAFT Heavy Industries genius Maxwell Winters as anti-Kaiju weaponry, they proved to be...expensive failures overall in the end and were not mass-produced. They were constructed in 1998.
Note: if 'smaller sizes' are used for Kaiju, then the Mechs' size is reduced to 1. This has a number of effects, including reducing Damage Capacity, Strength, Base Damage, and Armor Value.
