but I'm really at my limit here lmfao. batman & robin eteral's characterisation of literally everyone is terrible, the robin war storyline is an endless exercise of thinking "yeah you're gonna have to try A LOT HARDER to convince me jason would do that", and red hood/arsenal makes me remember rhato v1 with outright fondness.

Jason’s dad being killed by a guy with a facial injury to Jason growing up and becoming a mentor/father figure to two girls who also have facial injuries is such a funny coincidence. why do so many villains in that city have a thing about faces?

I'm a basic bitch for this one, but I'd love to know a bit of your interpretation of a time travel: Robin Jason.

I came up with the basis for that one a while ago, when I was still actively seeking for jason fics and often disappointed by the results. I saw a trope that often came up was de-aging jason/swapping him for robin!jason/bringing robin!jason into the present. and I saw a lot of things about how it was done (granted, I know I haven't read every example of it) that just... irked me, in ways I couldn't properly put into words. as always happens in those cases, I think about how I could put it words, albeit more artistically xDD

in this fic I use the third iteration: robin!jason (circa 13yo) suddenly appears in the present, with no apparent explanation. present!jason is still around, but unaware of this, as the other bats are keeping the situation under wraps. the first part of the fic will be in robin!jason's pov, as he figures out there's Something Up and sets to search for his counterpart. the second part is about what rh!jason does when that happens.

some things I want this fic to feature are

a) jasons being kind to other jasons!!! (my paramedic!jason-from-an-alternate-earth wip will feature that too!! this is just important to me. it's about chosing to give yourself the grace and the understanding you need because who else is going to? no one!!),

and b) damian having FEELINGS about robin!jason. the latter is what decided me re: the timeline; I saw a post about it (didn't reblog it so now I can't find it :( ), about damian meeting this kid that's so different from the jason he knows and especially the jason that always gets talked about, and about how damian would feel given how jason-the-cautionary-tale is presented to him in particular.

all of that is why I landed one a (sorta) post-convergence: batman and robin timeline for the fic, a place where present!jason and damian could know each other a bit better, with bruce present... and sasha is there!!! sasha meeting robin!jason is something that I needed to make happen, once the idea crossed my mind.

Just. The palpable rage. How he was only a kid but willing to kill. The way he loved Willis so much he wanted to avenge him. Honestly reminds me of the UtRH movie where he tells Bruce that if he had been the one to die then Jason would have killed the Joker to avenge him.

It’s just… he was so angry and heartbroken that his father had been taken from him that it makes me want to cry.

Anyway the answer is his hypocrisy.

Now, I know I talk a lot about Jason's love and his fears and stuff, but I think all of his everything can be better understood through his hipocrisy and his actions vs his words. Here's some instances that stick out to me:

• Sasha/Scarlet from Batman and Robin (2009)

One of Jason's Most Hated Things is the concept of child sidekicks. He hates that shit so much. However, he literally kidnaps a child from a mental health facility to make her his sidekick.

(While Morrison's Jason is... far from good, the concept of Sasha is one of my absolute favorites, so we're talking about it.)

Jason preaches about Batman being morally wrong for having another Robin after his death, and yet he takes Sasha with him to bloody, disgusting massacres he commits, and encourages her to participate in his "branding," exposing her to the violence of his beliefs.

BUT!! It's important to note that Jason cares about Sasha a lot. To the point where he's willing to work with Dick and Damian to get her to safety (aka, with him).

He actively teaches her violence and hatred and these very polarizing beliefs, and he does that because he loves her.

• Jason's idea of a criminal in Beast World

We all know Jason's backstory. We all know he stole the tires of the Batmobile and that's how he met Bruce. That story implies that Jason committed a lot of petty theft before he got picked up by Bruce, and it was his main source of income.

In UTRH, it's talked about how Jason belives that Bruce isn't effective against the "dress-ups" because they know he won't kill them, implying that Jason kills to scare said dress-ups, the bigger fish.

However, in the Scavengers story, we get this speech bubble:

Jason, as a child, is willing to do what he needs to survive, and yet kills other people who are doing the exact same thing. He talks about hunting down the bigger fish but we never get to see him actually do that at any point. (Seriously, the only Rogue I can remember him killing is Captain Nazi. Which was 8 years ago.) Instead, we get canon confirmation that he harms the little guy, the ones who are just trying to get by.

• Robin vs Red Hood and sex work

When Jason is Robin, we see him hurt pimps and (maybe) kill Felipe Garzonas for sexually assaulting women. He's pretty strongly against the abuse that comes with sex work.

But in UTRH, it's stated that Jason literally becomes a pimp.

There's nothing to indicate that he treats his girls any better or any worse than other pimps in Gotham, but the fact he becomes a pimp at all is enough to prove my point.

(That panel is also the best way to show my... mild distaste for utrh)
