playoff bubble

July 28, 2020

Hayden had been quarantining for the past week alone in her hotel room in Vancouver. She would play her first playoff game in two days and today she was allowed to meet with her team for an off the ice practice and then an on the ice practice.

It was pretty boring being alone for a week but she spent plenty of her time facetiming all of her friends and family especially Quinn as he is quarantining too.

She threw on a pair of athletic shorts, a hoodie that she stole from Quinn and a pair of orange converse and decided her messy french braid was enough.

She grabbed her phone and headed out of her hotel room and down to the conference room she was gonna meet her team for the first time in months.

She walked into the conference room and smiled softly seeing Connor and Leon. She knew they were allowed to be close to each other today as they are all quarantined in the same bubble so she walked right over to Leon and Connor.

Leon and Connor looked over hearing someone walking to them and they both paused seeing Hayden. She was tanner and was glowing, she looked happy and healthy but also her eyes, they were bright and blue not dim and barely blue.

Hayden flashed a smile at the two and Leon and Connor both released a sigh of relief seeing her truly happy, Connor pulled Hayden into a tight hug closing his eyes as he has not seen so much life in her eyes since he saw pictures of her when she was younger.

Of course Hayden talked to Lauren, Connor, Leon and Celeste through out the time she was back home in Michigan and they knew she was doing better as she laughed more on the phone calls but to see her in person and to see how happy she looks it was amazing.

Connor and Leon both knew Celeste and Lauren will be so happy to hear how happy Hayden is and they both know how much they miss her like crazy.

“Hey rookie.” Connor fondly smiled as they pulled away and he clasped his hand on her shoulder like he always does.

“Technically am i still a rookie?” Hayden cheekily asked being completely herself for the first time since she met than and the two couldn’t help but adore her even more.

“You’ll always be our rookie Mäuschen.” Leon told her with a soft smile, a smile not many can get from him.

Hayden fondly rolled her eyes but smiled as she had missed both of them, she stepped closer to Leon and looked at him slightly hesitant as she has never hugged him off the ice before.

Leon smiled gently and pulled her into a firm but gentle hug and Hayden easily hugged him back.

Connor smiled softly remembering how Leon grumbled when he found out Connor got a hug from Hayden before he could.

Hayden pulled back from the hug and started talking with Connor and Leon.

Kailer Yamamoto and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins walked over and Ryan gently ruffled Hayden’s hair as he walked up behind her, “Hey Blake.” Ryan flashed a smile at his younger teammate.

Kailer and Ryan both knew Hayden wasn’t in a good place when she came to Edmonton and was very closed off so they kindly backed off from her but still was always kind to her.

“Hi Nuge, Hi Yamo.” Hayden kindly greeted her teammates smiling at them. She knew it was weird for her teammates to have a girl on their team for the first time and someone who is a lot younger than any one else and she wasn’t the most open to anyone when she arrived so she was grateful they treated her so kindly despite all of that.

Kailer and Ryan shared a surprised look at how easily Hayden smiled at them and both of them noticed how happy she looked in general, They were glad that Hayden seemed to have done well over the quarantine and it seemed like they are going to get know Hayden better now.

August 1, 2020

Hayden finished tying her orange high top converses as she finished getting ready for her first game. She was wearing a pair of black dress pants and a simple white and back stripped sweater.

Hayden paused as her phone rung and she looked down at the screen seeing Lauren facetiming her, “Hi Laur.” Hayden greeted as she set her phone up on the desk in the hotel room as she brushed out her hair.

“Hayden darling!” Lauren beamed as she spoke to Hayden, “I have a surprise for you!” Lauren told her a bit sad she couldn’t be there in person for the playoffs for Connor and Hayden but especially for Hayden’s first playoffs.

Hayden hummed looking curious as Lauren stood up and showed Hayden the jacket she was wearing. It was the WAG jackets the team got this year but on Lauren’s arm there was a patch with Hayden’s name and number.

“You-“ Hayden spluttered out completely speechless. Her eyes filled with tears and for once they weren’t sad tears but happy tears.

Lauren became alarmed when she noticed the gears, “I’m sorry did i overstep, i can take it off.” Lauren quickly spoke.

“Lauren.” Hayden spoke up shaking her head to stop Lauren from apologizing anymore, “Thank you.” Hayden told her extremely sincerely.

Lauren’s eyes widen in shock and she still looked worried she overstepped.

“It’s been a long time since anyone had worn my name.” Hayden softly told Lauren. Ellen and Jim haven’t worn a jersey in a few years as they have only been at games where she has played against one of the boys and they don’t want to pick favorites. Quinn, Luke and Jack don’t ever really wear her jersey like she doesn’t wear theirs. The last time someone wore her name were her parents.

“Thank you so much.” Hayden smiled tearfully, the patch meant more to Hayden than she could ever express.

Lauren’s face softened realizing she didn’t over steppe and Hayden just looked happy, “Of course. Anytime.” Lauren firmly reassured and she knew she was always going to wear Hayden’s name and number on her WAG jackets now and knew Celeste definitely would too.

Hayden thanked Lauren again before they did their goodbyes and Hayden put her headphones in and called her brothers.

Jack, Luke, Quinn and Hayden had all made a new rule that before any one of their games they had to FaceTime their group chat so they could talk to each other more.

Hayden smiled as Jack answered and Luke was sitting next to him and Luke was wearing her Oilers hoodie and Jack was in her old US Hockey shirt. Quinn joined the call from his hotel room wearing an Oiler’s hat for Hayden.

Hayden beamed at her brothers as they all were wearing something for her and smiled contently as she talked to all of them as she walked to the bus.

Hayden was going to play her first playoff game and she felt happy for that and didn’t feel sad because her parents would miss it.

55-56. A tiny metal disc that a weird guy once paid you for a job with, which if pressed to your skin somehow perfectly regulates the temperature of the air in your vicinity to your preferences by no visible means. It works on every planet with an atmosphere that you’ve been on so far.

57-58. A beautifully carved spice chest containing spices from your homeworld, for when you’re feeling homesick. It’s been getting really hard to restock it out here.

59-60. A disabled registration chip from the labour camp that you kept after escaping, even though it would be a really stupid thing to have on you if you’re ever back in that sector of space.

61-62. A tiny bag of glittering micro-crystals from the surface of a moon. Worthless, but so pretty.

63-64. A canister of engineering lubricant that you are literally never without.

65-66. A tattoo of a series of unknown symbols that you and your buddies from your old military unit got after a particularly hellish mission. None of you took any pictures of the lab you found them in, but somehow all of you remembered them perfectly.

67-68. A portable mining lamp your dad ‘borrowed’ when they decommissioned the old colony. The batteries on this thing are incredible, as they haven’t run out nearly 55 years later.

69-70. A seashell from the first time you ever saw an ‘ocean’ after growing up in space.

71-72. A portable personal forcefield that only stops rain, from the first time you experienced ‘weather’ and decided you didn’t like it very much.

73-74. The helmet of a spacesuit that has clearly been partially melted through by some sort of acidic substance and which you refuse to answer questions about.

75-76. An object which you found in a junk bin at a salvage yard and which no one you’ve ever met has been able to identify.

77-78. A single live seed in a viability canister that everyone who leaves your homeworld is given to take with them.

79-80. A religious pamphlet that some nutjob on the hub station gave you. It’s got some seriously weird and somewhat apocalyptic stuff in there, but for some reason you haven’t thrown it away yet.

81-82. A well-read, second-hand copy of ‘Myths of Hyperspace: A Collection of Spacer Tales’ that you bought for funsies and totally don’t believe in, no sir.

83-84. A collection of antique medical equipment that your old captain gave to you, for reasons you aren’t entirely sure of.

85-86. An unlabelled collection of beautiful music recordings you found in a spaceport, and which you’ve been idly trying to identify ever since.

87-88. A dataset of sightings, speculation and other information regarding a mysterious ship that has been seen on and off for the last fifty years by gas miners and illegal racers in the clouds of your gas giant homeworld, and which you’ve been obsessed with since you caught what might have been a glimpse of it yourself.

89-90. A ring gene-locked to your lost partner that will never come off your finger.

91-92. A tiny realistic-looking but robotic animal that was the only type of pet allowed on your company’s spaceships.

93-94. A bottle of extremely heavy-duty and almost definitely expired anti-nausea medication that you kept from your first shuttle ride into space.

95-96. A dog-eared magazine containing a two-page spread of the most beautiful spaceship you’ve ever seen in your life, and which you’ve sworn to yourself that you will one day own.

97-98. A corporate logo of the company that left your colony to die, torn off the side of one of the cheap delivery crates full of useless equipment that they supplied.

99-100. A recording of a garbled and unintelligible transmission one of your old buddies sent you, and which you’ve only kept because they vanished not long afterwards. There’s a weird sound that keeps repeating in the background, but you don’t know what it is.

Episode 7: Still Purple

The song Butterfly starts and I know this episode is going to be hard to watch because I'm already tearing up.

This is a long post. Apologies. There's a lot to say about it.

They are talking about what concert memories mean the most to them:

Hobi says it was their first stadium concert at the Rose Bowl which was the most significant memory for him as far as which concert was the most memorable.

Jungkook says it was Chicago when it was the first time they'd ever performed in the rain:

Jin says it's when they perform IDOL that is his favorite concert memory.

Jimin says even though fans would see what he's talking about through photos but in real life, what they see from the stage is so beautiful, words can't do justice to describe it:

They reminisce about their concert at the Olympic Gymnastic Arena and recalling the emotions they felt then, that they had reached the top in 2016 are a very precious memory to them

Concerts are what they were made to do. Their type of performance, the big choreography, the big songs... big performances... belong on the live concert stage.

And now we're at the series of concerts that were to be their last before they really embark on Chapter 2: PTD Las Vegas.

BigHit/Hybe pulled out the stops for this one. The city of Las Vegas was all in and being the party city it is, it was one of the most fun and extravagant things I've ever witnessed.

I 1000% regret not going. I didn't know it was going to be the last chance for a long time.

They get to do things like attend a few concerts and visit the Bellagio Fountain when the fountains of water are set to the rhythm of Dynamite and Butter. I know Hobi has a video of Jungkook and Tae vibing to Dynamite at the Bellagio Fountain on his camera roll! Show it to us Hobi!!

Jimin, Yoongi and Namjoon went to the Silk Sonic concert.

I think it's curious that they do not mention the 2022 Grammy performance or event at all. When they left Seoul for this trip on March 28, 2022, Hobi was not with them because he had tested positive for covid prior to departure. Jungkook wasn't with them because he'd left the day before for the purpose of a work schedule but I don't remember what it was, and upon landing in the U.S. he tested positive for covid and had to quarantine until he had a negative test.

They were to perform at the Grammy Awards show on April 3, 2022. They were missing two members up until the day before the performance. Thankfully Hobi tested negative in time to catch a plane to Las Vegas:

And after all that, they gave a performance of a lifetime during the Grammy Awards:

Anyway... I digress... just curious they make no mention of it at all...

Jungkook brought his boxing coach (Coach Tommy) and this might be the workout he was doing prior to joining Hobi, Tae and Jimin for that Vlive following one of their concerts.

Jungkook says the only thing he regrets about the previous 10 years was that it took him a while to realize certain things and then put them into practice.

Namjoon wonders what it would've been like had they ended things after ON and Yoongi reflects that they would've taken a break from November 2020, if the pandemic had not happened and they would've been on a break for about two and half years (for enlistment). They didn't expect the pandemic to go on for so long (none of us did).

Namjoon wonders if he stayed true to the lyrics he wrote in ON while living his life. He thought they were running straight ahead all this time but as it turns out, they had gone in a circle and were back at the starting line. He contemplates what to do to run forward again.

The last PTD Las Vegas concert is bittersweet for all of us. So much has happened to culminate with this.

Tae says it's time for them to organize their thoughts so they can come back with a better image and performance and they aren't saying they are done, they are saying they've worked hard and now they need the time to grow.

And then we see Jimin in the car, on the way home after their last PTD Seoul concert on March 13, 2020. He is on the phone inviting someone over. Guess who?

It looks like he's taken a shower. He shows us a pot of fish cake soup his dad made for him. Jimin prepares three place settings, fetches 3 bottles of soju, and pardon me but the fact Jimin has a can of spray cheez in his auxiliary kitchen changes everything for me.

Why is he consuming that and why does he store it above the kitchen sink in is extra kitchen? Why do these expensive apartments have two kitchens? Jimin barely needs one kitchen but he has two...

Anyway, Jungkook arrives and they proceed to eat and drink.

While they are having a conversation about what time they go to bed and wake up, Jimin says he might sleep until 4 pm and then this ensues:

When Jungkook makes the remark that he sounds like Yoongi, off-camera, you can hear someone stifling their wheezing laugh. Staff camera man is in on the joke and the documentary editors are too as they cut briefly to Yoongi eating take out chicken.

The editors were wrong for that! HAHAHAHAH!

Then Tae and Namjoon talk about and show us their living spaces and how they feel living on their own.

Namjoon is very particular about his space and he says its very precious to him. He says the way one curates their living space speaks a lot about their personality and taste. I agree 100%. He says he wants to show us his space so we can know what kind of person he is.

Tae says he decorated his own space, commissioning art pieces for it. He has an extensive collection of vinyl records and puts on a yellow vinyl disc that appears to be Betty Wright, a recording of a live performance. He says boredom can be a given when living alone and he says he looks for Small but Definite Happiness in his daily life. SDH. We should all strive to do that.

Then we're back at Jimin's and Jungkook is cooking more food, chopping vegetables. FYI, that Miele induction cooktop is about $3,500.

Watching Jimin retell the story of when one of his friends pointed out that he seemed depressed, was not himself, was one of the most revealing things we've ever heard from Jimin.

And now he feels he's in a very healthy place. I'm gonna elaborate on this in another blog post when I'm done with this series.

All in all, the members had to learn to live alone after living together for 8 years or more for some of them.

Yoongi reflects on running so hard in their 20s. He wonders if they shouldn't have enjoyed themselves more and not let the pressures become overwhelming. Regardless, now that he's reached 30, all those worries and thoughts have disappeared and he feels liberated.

I've realized some of these interviews for these episodes were conducted on the day they traveled from Seoul to Las Vegas because they are wearing the same clothing.

Kaia’s bday wish for Cara

I didn’t wanna make this too long and theres more evidence of stuff between Kaia and Cara but this is the rundown.

Keep in mind during all of this Kaia was 18 and Cara was 28… While Cara has seemed to change her life around it doesn’t look like much has changed for Kaia based on her recent behavior

No following; Planet of the apes fanfic Chap. 7

Here we go readers, here we now enter the world of DAWN of the Planet of the Apes. Now here is where the warnings are bumped up to at least 3x mainly due to the level of swearing involved and certain words which I will point out in certain chapters. But I hope you all continue to enjoy this series and follow along as Lin navigates through a decade later and find out she's hiding secrets from her past that will be explained further on in the story.

Ten years. It almost doesn’t even seem that long ago, but in this day in age; one year can almost feel like 20-100 depending on who you ask. After Caesar and the apes escaped into the Red Woods, the world went to shit known as the Simian Flu. A global pandemic that swept over the entire world and in just six months there were over 5 million deaths worldwide.

I, however, was one of the unlucky ones to somehow be immune from getting the Simian flu. Caroline and uncle Will—they weren’t. Caroline got sick within a year of the outbreak and died just days later. Uncle Will and I were forced into quarantine after she had gotten sick and I was told he died 2 months after he had passed away.

Being the sole survivor of your family…..it’s hard. And it didn’t help when I came across a news feed of the government sending in the military to burn the Red Woods down. If somehow Caesar had survived up until that point, I doubt he and the other apes made it out of that alive.

In this whole chaos, governments eventually shut down, nuclear power was cut off and civil unrest occurred on a daily basis. Humanity was tearing itself apart and it’d only be a matter of time before I too might be killed off. If I don’t eventually get the virus, I could end up on the wrong end of a war and end up being another civilian casualty, hell I got lucky last time.

I was awakened by a wet tongue and a loud howl before a yip finally forced my eyes opened and I saw a red wolf pup staring me right in the face.

“Good morning Toboe.” He let out a huffed bark before sniffing my face and licking it. “Alright, alright, god you’ve got really bad breath.” I got out of bed and stretched myself out before heading downstairs. As the wood creaked with each step, three more wolves perked up at my arrival. A large dark grey wolf, a Mexican wolf, and a pure white wolf. “Morning Hige, Tsume, Kiba. You boys ready for breakfast?”

At the mention of food, Hige stood up and wagged his bushy tail and let out a several loud barks.

“Okay, okay Hige no need to get your fur in a twist. Just let me get dressed and my supplies and we’ll head for the woods.” I headed over to the chest and headed for the bathroom and changed out of my sweats and into my hunting/scouting attire. Some simple black leggings, a black tank-top and my old military camo-jacket (I’d rather not talk about my days in the military).

I also grabbed my bow and arrows that I handmade myself and ordered the boys to come and they followed right behind me. We came out of the house and I unveiled my bike from under the tarp. One can never be too careful, I’ve seen thieves from the colonies coming around this part of the neighborhood trying to get anything they can get their hands on.

I started up my bike and my wolves followed right behind me as we raced down the road and across the abandoned Golden gate bridge. A place frozen in time from when the apes first made their escape a decade ago.

After arriving at the entrance path to the Red woods, I shut my bike off and pocketed the keys and whistled for the pack to scout ahead. They took off running and disappeared into the forest.

If you’re wondering just how in the hell does a 28 year old know how to control four male wolves? Well I don’t. Nor can I, for one thing I know they’re wild animals, just like Caesar was. I respect them and let them be who they are. They just choose whether or not they want to stay with me. Hige had migrated from his normal home (since Mexican wolves were found near Arizona and not California) where I found him in a trap and I set him free. After that he kinda just stuck around (I think it also helped that since he had tried to get back in the trap for the food that was in there and I had tossed it to him. That wolf can get in trouble for his stomach I’ll tell you what).

Kiba and Tsume I found together injured and barely alive especially Kiba. Poor thing was covered in blood I almost had mistaken him for a red wolf. Both of them suffering from what appeared to be animal attack wounds. And I swore from the bite marks alone they looked like apes (since they were almost identical to human bites) but I brushed it aside as impossible. No one’s seen any of the apes since the forest burning eight years ago.

It took a long while for Tsume and Kiba to come around but eventually they did even though there are times I do get bit or growled at. And then there’s the pup of the pack, Toboe. He was found abandoned in the woods during one of our hunts just a year ago. Poor thing was so frail and skinny, I feared he wouldn’t make it. But two weeks rest by the fire and after being given some water and food he started to come around.

In total. I’ve had these wolves at my side for almost 3 years now and they’ve kinda filled in a void that I thought was long gone after uncle Will had passed away. I got up into the trees and perched myself on the first branch I could settle on and waited for food to come to me.

While it is true I grew up playing in these woods, lately with no human interference, there have been animals who were never native to this area had migrated their way down to California for the first time in hundreds of years. Last I heard from when I was making trade with the nearby colony, I overhear someone saying that grizzly bears were found in these woods now, and that the mountain lion population was starting to make a comeback more than it ever had before. So one can never be too cautious in these woods now.

I scanned the area and all I could hear were birds softly chirping or the occasional squirrel or two. I heard a rustle of the trees and readied my bow and arrow when out popped out a doe and following short behind her was her fawn. I lowered my bow and watched as the mother and baby walked across the woods and stopped right at the creek nearby for a drink of water. Even though it had been over 20 years since my parents died, I still think about them every now and then but lately their faces have become nothing but a blur.

Another sound caught my attention and I turned to see two squirrels trying to get one acorn. One squirrel already had the nut and was trying to chew it open but the other squirrel was trying to weasel it’s way in and steal the nut. There was chittering exchanged before the second squirrel stole the nut and a chase soon commenced up one of the nearby trees.

Even in the animal kingdom there will always be thieves. But seeing these two comical squirrels made me smile as I became invested in their little game of chase. That was until the snapping of a twig caught my ear. It was then I saw a large six point deer staring directly at me. I stared right back at him and slowly raised my bow and he took off running back towards the woods. But I released my arrow and just as he disappeared I heard him let out a pained yelp as my arrow managed to get him before he got too far into the trees.

I climbed down the tree and raced towards him taking out my hunting knife. I saw the deer struggling to get up as my arrow had gotten him in the ribs. I held my knife in my hand and said to him.

“I’m sorry.” I then stabbed him right in the back of the neck and gave it a twist and he immediately went still and ceased his screaming. I took back my knife and my arrow and cleaned them off in the grass before readying the deer for travel.

After stringing him up and getting him into the side cart of my bike I turned back towards the woods and let out a single wolf howl, signaling to the boys that I was leaving for back home. I started up the engine and drove back into town to get my meat ready for lunch and dinner.

After skinning and preparing the meat I dug into my deer meat and felt like I had died and gone to heaven. Lately my hunting hasn’t had the best game, really only getting the smaller creatures, hell my last deer catch was well over 2 months ago so to finally get the richer meat that is deer, god I could die happy now. After lunch and saving the rest of the meat for later tonight, the pack soon returned with four birds in their mouths.

Toboe was the first to set his bird down at my feet, I soon realized that they had all managed to catch some quail. Hige then came up next and set his quail on top of Toboe’s. Then finally, Tsume and Kiba set their quail before me. I smiled and told them.

“Thank you boys.” Toboe’s and Hige’s tails wagged softly while Tsume and Kiba just sat down and stared at me. “It’s time I went out and made a trade with the colony, who wants to come?” Hige and Toboe immediately back off and headed back for the living room leaving Tsume and Kiba with me. “Seems like it’s the three of us, or are you two gonna ditch me too?” they stood up but they didn’t leave.

I went to the back and grabbed the supplies I managed to find further up in the city that no one dared to go since the riots a year ago. I also went into my spare closet and took out my old sniper rifle. I grimaced at it before putting it around my back as well as placed my gun holster belt around my waist.

“C’mon boys.” I grabbed my cloak and placed the hood over my head and once again readied my bike for the drive down to the SF Colony. Tsume and Kiba running close beside me until we finally reached it within 10 minutes.

The colony was once the Quarantine center of San Fransico. Anyone who had come into contact with someone who caught the Simian flu was sent here like Will and I were after Caroline got sick. But this was no home, it felt more like solitary confinement. A steal-enforced room that was most likely an 8x10 room (just like a jail cell) with lights always blaring down at you as your temperature, blood pressure and vitals were constantly being monitored.

Will and I couldn’t even share the same hallway as each other so I never got to say goodbye to my uncle. Only be told that he had died after a nurse was going her daily checkup on me. After a year with no symptoms, I was let go and finally felt the first beam of sunlight and fresh air on my face.

Nowadays this former quarantine cell now holds those in San Francisco that remain immune to the virus. But when the colony was being forged and the two men who were running it had found me, I refused to be a part of this prison once again. However hunting and fishing can only get me so far in life, so I made a deal with one of them.

If I could go out and find supplies whether it be weapons, food, a source of fresh water, or by some miracle an alternate power source, I would be given some portions of their food and drugs. But there are some people who try to test me because I’m an outsider taking some of their portions but they eventually learned that if you attack someone with a sniper rifle and has wolves who walk calmly beside her, you don’t test her.

Once I came up to the gates, they immediately opened up and I walked inside along with Kiba and Tsume walking on either side of me. The crowd already making room for us to walk through the colony. I walked further in until I came up to the stairway leading up to the catwalk.

“No one’s seen you in two weeks Lin. Some were starting to think you were dead.” I turned my head and just on the other side of the catwalk was Malcolm. He walked over to me and I said to him.

“A girl decides to hold off on her deal to get more supplies and people start spreading rumors about me.”

“I see that once again you brought your….backup.” he nervously looked down at Kiba and Tsume who both licked their chops and stood like two alpha wolves.

“You know they only bite when they want to. Or if I tell them it’s okay. Whichever comes first. Where’s Dreyfus?”

“In his office. C’mon.” he guided us towards his office and there at his desk sat Dreyfus holding a dead i-pad. “Dreyfus, she’s here.” He stood up as I came in.

“Lin. This is a surprise, we thought…..”

“I was dead? Yeah, yeah Malcolm already filled me in on the rumors. Look I was scouting for more supplies so I could get more income. Last time you skipped out on me for food portions and I don’t take kindly to that. So this time, I’m making it worth your while.” I set the bag down on his desk and leaned against the door while the two men went through the sack.

There they found new reading material for the children, some ‘new’ cables and wires that they could use for their radios to get a signal out, several healing herbs I picked from the Red woods, and a few magazine clippings with live rounds inside taken from some of the police cars that still stood along the bridge.

“Lin, this is—”

“Don’t patronize me Dreyfus. I’m not doing this for you, I’m doing it for those here that really need it. Now my portions and drugs.”

“Right, right. I’ll personally see to it that Scotty gets your portions correct this time around.” I then turned to Malcolm and asked.

“That girl of yours still have the strong stuff?”

“Yeah, yeah I’ll have Ellie give you whatever antibodies you need.”

“No antibodies this time, I want sleeping pills. The strong kind, not anything miniscule.” They both looked at me perplexed. “It’s that or it’s no deal.” I threatened.

“We’ll go talk to Ellie.” He then escorted me out of Dreyfus’ office and we headed towards his corner of the quarantine zone where they used to store all the medicine for the fever and sore throats but now he had made it into his personal little one level home with his girl Ellie and his son, Alexander.

When we came in and Alexander saw Kiba and Tsume, he jumped back but Malcolm assured him.

“It’s okay Alex just don’t provoke them.”

“And don’t look them directly in the eyes. Wolves take that as a challenge, at least these two do.” I also warned. The kid remained frozen where he stood until Ellie came around the corner and when she saw me she said my name. “Hey Ellie. Look I need sleeping pills, the strong kind and strongest you’ve got and I don’t mean no Nyquil or melatonin BS. Find whatever you’ve got and I’ll be on my way.”

“Oh, okay. I’ll see what I have. It may not be much but I’ll just see what I’ve got.” She said turning back to look through her supplies. I then turned to Malcolm who has been giving me the side-eyed downward look like he was figuring out what to say to me.

“Spit it out Malcolm.”

“What?”

“Don’t play dumb. Ever since you saw me, you’ve been meaning to ask me something so just say it!” I snarled lowly. He took a deep breath and exhaled through his nose.

“We’re almost running out of power. We’ve tried to rewire and connect to any alternative sources but they’re all dried out. But we’ve discovered that hidden within the redwoods is a dam that could help us restore limited power. And being that you’re the only one with a clear expertise on navigating those woods, we were hoping you could lead a handful of us to the dam. Just to see if it still works.”

Kiba and Tsume huffed and lowly growled as I took my sniper rifle off my shoulder and admired it as I asked him.

“How many is a handful?” I asked brushing off my scope.

“About six of us. Ellie, me, Alex, Kemper, Foster, and Carver.”

“No.” I immediately said. “I’ll take the rest of you but absolutely not Carver. That sniveling jellyfish can’t be trusted with a gun much less a knife.”

“Look I know you two have a….history, but he did work for the water company before all this went down. He knows all the ins and outs of how to get it running.” I glared at him. “Lin please. If we don’t try our luck with the dam, we’ll lose…..everything. More than we already have. You can’t tell me you’ll really let all these innocent civilians die.” I remained silent for a moment before telling him.

“I’ll let you know by sunset.” At that moment Ellie came back in and said as she held out two pill bottles.

“I had a quarter of Eszopiclone and half bottle of Zolpidem. Don’t take more than one pill a night and don’t…..”

“Don’t mix with alcohol yeah, yeah I know. I’ve been to health class.”

“Don’t be a smartass.” She demanded. “These aren’t to be taken lightly.”

“That’s why I asked for them.” I said taking the pill bottles out of her hands and let out a whistle as I placed my rifle around my chest and Kiba and Tsume followed me out the door.

I saddled up on my bike as Dreyfus handed me my rations and I told him.

“And Dreyfus, next time you want to ask me for a personal favor, do it yourself don’t get Malcolm to do your dirty work for you.” I revved up my bike and took off with Kiba and Tsume running right behind me.

Time passed and it would be dark within an hour. I had written my message for Malcolm about my decision to lead them to the Red Woods, I tied the note to a carrier pigeon and let it fly off to the colony base and I let out a deep sigh.

“You think I’m doing the right thing boys?” the four of them looked at me heads tilted. “Yeah didn’t think so. But I can’t just let them die. Even if some of them are assholes who deserve it, particularly Carver. But if that base goes, so do I. Hunting can only get us so far boys, and we can’t really leave this city unfortunately. If there even is a chance at restoring power, we gotta take it.” I popped open one of the pills Ellie gave me and washed it down with just a bit of water before falling backwards onto my bed and shut my eyes as the sky went from grey to black.

SDNDND SUNDAYS

Every Sunday (starting Sunday, May 21st) we'll watch an episode of my personal favourite underrated Watcher series, 'Social Distancing and Dungeons and Dragons' and make some silly little posts and memes about the ep!

Why should we watch SDNDND?

Whether you're into DnD or not, SDNDND is an awesome, silly little series where Shane's storytelling really shines. As the Dungeon Master, Shane gets to guide the players (Ryan, Steven, and Katie) through a mystical fantasy world, and play a plethora of enigmatic characters who encounter the heroes along their journey. The party consists of Stephanos CoffeeBean (Steven Lim), a halfling cleric with a tragic past, a banging bod, and a heart of gold, Quezza (Katie Leblanc), a half-orc fighter with a super cool scar who's a total badass, and Steve (Ryan Bergara), a half-elf bard and little bastard (/pos). Throughout the series, the cast all grows into their characters, generating some genuinely emotional acting moments and hilarious shenanigans. If you enjoy the humour and storytelling of Puppet History, you might just love SDNDND.

Prompt #28: Deleterious

Her hands cupped around the flame as the incense took to light. The smokey smell of cinnamon began to rise from it, then swirled through the tent as she let out a breath of her magicks. An effort promptly brought to disruption by the arrival of her most wonderful beloved.

The tent flap opened to a storm condensed entirely in the shape of the love of her life. Comforting petrichor and wingbeats replaced with unsaid curses and thunderous static across her scales and skin. A rage unspoken, caused by what she had yet to know, one so thoroughly filling her that it dispersed her carefully cast scent of smoke and serenity that Amesha couldn’t help but sigh. So she did. Loudly. “Hawk,” She sighed, again, turning with care that her tail didn’t knock the incense burner over. The day had already been busy enough- no need to add a fire. “What ails, what ills? Only a sun has gone in the moment of triumph and yet already she suffers from stormclouds…” She didn’t get much of an answer. At least not verbally- Swept up near immediately by Sawyer’s arms and pulled into a hug around her middle that left her legs dangling and her own arms wrapped around Sawyer’s neck. Being fully immersed in the flowing aura of her partner’s immediate discomfort and anger was enough to paint a picture, perhaps several, as waves and throes of something… It wasn’t anger, no, nor was it rage. She had felt the coming and goings of her love’s rage many a time. It was a specific roll of thunder, a particular taste of metal on the tongue, a half-remembered scent of lightning-burnt ground. This was not that. Amesha couldn’t quite put her finger on it as she was carried. Through the gentle cloud of smoke to their place of rest. A pile of bedroll and cot that suited her quite well for when she was collapsed and worthless after a week spent in complete and utter focus. Not quite as helpful in the current moment, no, as Sawyer was forced to awkwardly lower herself and Amesha to the ground until she was able to readjust and pull her close once again. The raen’s tail settled between Sawyer’s legs as the hyur’s arms wrapped around Amesha’s middle once more. Pulled tight, held there, and the face of her love pressed into Amesha’s hair. A long and deep breath.

“…It’s nothing, heartlight-” The noise that left Amesha was just short of cursing her. “Okay, it isn’t nothing,” Sawyer course corrected. “But it isn’t something you should have to worry over. You’ve already been doing far and above what anyone else here has individually and I won’t-” Another noise. Another pause in Sawyer’s frustrations. Now she sighed. “I was working out preliminary reporting for the few heading back tonight. A summary of discoveries, any casualties, and how the outlook is from here. You’ve heard me speak on this a few too many times…” Her voice trailed off as she squeezed Amesha tighter for a moment. Another breath in of her hair. “While the beginning of this… quarantine and elimination was not exactly what I would call standard procedure, all involved were unharmed and capable of maintaining the situation until the second and third group of parties arrived.”

Amesha’s wing flew in low with a bottle balanced precariously on the edge of its crystal feathers. She gently plucked it free as her partner continued to speak- something roundabout that, while likely frustrating, did not much bother Amesha herself- and uncorked it. The stopper set aside, then, and the bottle placed next to it as the scent of lavender slowly filtered its way through the continued emanations of her partner’s aura. Enough to cut through it at this concentration. To disrupt the energy that so weighed heavy on her Hawk and caused her to fly with only intent to drag talons through whatever it was that ailed her. But restrained, as of this moment, and instead replaced with an intent to press herself forcefully in branch and bough as substitute. “…Heartlight…” Sawyer’s voice broke through her thoughts, her tone a restrained sense of exasperation. “…Is it that bad? I’m not being that insufferable, am I? Having to break out the incense and oils as if I’m having a bad day…” “The Hawk bears storm on steel wings. The brunt of it, the worst of it, and all the worse…” Amesha squirmed so that she could turn herself around and push herself up in Sawyer’s arms, far enough to pull her face into her chest. Her arms wrapped around her love’s head to keep her there. She pressed a kiss to the top of Sawyer’s head. “All the worse is that she can not lash out against ones who so desperately need it, mmn?” The silence was more than enough. Even more so as it was accompanied by the parting of stormclouds, of the gentle embrace of a warm summer rain’s touch against her skin. A small smile took to Amesha’s lips as she squeezed her partner closer, as she felt her slowly release the tension in her shoulders and her back.

“…You weren’t listening when I was saying what happened, were you?” Sawyer sighed, an exhale of a laugh against her chest. “The Oasis does not need to hear to know. Nor does the Hawk want the light of her heart to suffer selfsame frustration, no? Where the Hawk might have learned restraint, might have learned to keep talons away; the river which she so often lays beside has woken to the joy of putting the irreverent in place. To be buried and drowned by waves-” Another squeezing hug from Sawyer cut her off. “Point taken, heartlight. Point taken.”

"Osman Ilgun was arrested in September 2021 and soon transferred to a detention centre 1,500 kilometres away from his home in the Inuit community of Quaqtaq in Quebec's Nunavik region.

At the jail in Amos, Que., he was fed raw food — he says he believes guards stereotypically assumed Inuit people eat raw meat. He said he was forced to quarantine for 28 days, adding he had limited access to showers and phone calls with family during that time.

"My mother, she was so worried because I didn't have access to the phone to tell her what's going on," said Ilgun, who was charged with sexual assault. He has pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial.

Ilgun was one of the 617 Inuit people admitted to a Quebec jail in the 12 months ending March 31, 2022. That number represents 4.5 per cent of the 13,613 Inuit living in the province — a rate 15 times higher than the average incarceration rate in Quebec, provincial data shows. It's also a rate almost twice as high as that of any other Indigenous group in the province."

April 28, 2019

Clementine was leaning up against a wall around her IIHF U18 Team having completed the tournament early in the day and they were all hanging out in a empty hotel room, some playing cards or poker, some all huddling with their phones, a few half asleep on the floor, and some just talking and eating.

Clementine was leaning against the wall looking out the window showing the city of Sweden, she tensed as she felt an arm wrap around her shoulder before she smelt the cologne and slightly relaxed.

“Well hello gorgeous.” Braden Schneider greeted her with his flirty smirk.

“Schneider.” Clementine deadpanned, she has known him for a few years now, playing him multiple times a year in the WHL and being teammates for Team Canada and they have the same NHL draft class.

“Aww, no smile for me.” Braden sadly pouted poking at her cheek making her bit her lip to stop her smile hating how he has grown on her over the years, “I saw that.” He smugly grinned at his favorite girl.

“Shut up.” Clementine grumbled crossing her arms over her chest but not moving away from his arm.

“Never.” Braden promised with a smile looking around before discreetly pressing a quick kiss to her cheek, “I will see you later Clemsy.” Braden winked at her and is the only one to call her that.

Clementine cursed in her mind as she felt her cheeks grow hot.

Jamie Drysdale happened to see the interaction between his two teammates and walked over giving his friend a look.

“James don’t.” Clementine gave him a stern look back. Clementine and Jamie had quickly become quick friends within the first time they met and they seemed to just click.

“I wasn’t going to.” Jamie innocently smiled holding his hands up in defense.

“Mhm.” Clementine hummed not believing a word he said, knowing Jamie is very sweet but also looks very innocent meaning he easily gets away with anything.

Clementine was watching the rest of the draft after getting drafted number one to the New Jersey Devils.

She sat on the couch watching it with Connor as the rest of her family was outside celebrating still.

“The New York Rangers are proudly to select Braden Schneider.”

Clementine perked up slightly at the name and clapped with a small smile getting a teasing look from her younger brother which she ignored.

She pulled up her phone pulling up her texts with Braden, “Looks like we are rivals again.” She texted and shut off her phone letting out a chuckle at the coincidence.

The two having been rivals the last three seasons and now they are drafted to the two teams that have one of the biggest rivals in the NHL.

“It’s fate Clemsy :).” Braden texted back the second he had a free second and smiled at Clementine texting him.

Connor made kissing sounds seeing his sister smiling at her phone, Clementine elbowed him giving him a look, “Do not be a brat.”

Connor just smiled shaking his head.

Clementine put her hotel key against the door for her hotel room for the WJC and walked into the room and saw the bathroom light on and door closed and knew it was her roommate, she didn’t know who it would be but she only had a few people that rooms with her so she didn’t bother to find out exactly who it was.

She set her bags down on the floor next to the empty bed not hearing the bathroom door open and someone walk up behind her only when she felt arms wrap around her waist to spin her around.

She froze for a second before hearing an all familiar laugh and she relaxed into the backwards hug as he spun them around before setting her back down on the ground.

Clementine spun around turning to face Braden who was staring at her with a smile across his face, she wrapped her arms around his neck pulling him into a hug.

Braden smiled wider and hugged her tightly back.

The two started getting closer or rather Clementine started accepting her feelings for him and over the last nine months of being in quarantine they have facetimed and texted a lot and got a lot closer than they already were.

“Hi.” Braden whispered cupping her face, looking at her with a fond smile.

“Hi.” Clementine whispered back with a smile before she bit her lip and leaned up on her toes pressing her lips to his, Braden hand moved down to the lower of her back pulling her closer to him.

“Took you long enough.” Braden teased panting slightly as they pulled back.

“Shut up.” Clementine fondly rolled eyes whispering against his lips.

“Gladly.” Braden whispered before pressing his lips back against hers.

Clementine and Braden officially got together after they saw each other again at the WJC at the end of 2020 and their families weren’t surprised when they finally got together, they both kept their relationship private only family and some friends knowing not wanting anyone in their private life.

They loved being in a relationship and the two just fit each other so well, especially as Braden just seemed to bring out a more silly side of Clementine and they both experienced their first relationship.

But it was difficult, Clementine being in the NHL and having her rookie year and living in New Jersey and Braden switching between the AHL and WHL never having any time to see each other besides in the summer and they both knew it couldn’t work out forever.

He came to visit her for a few days having gotten a few days off and luckily so did Clementine.

Clementine rested her arm againt his bare arm laying in silence covered by a silk sheet feeling the slight cool chill in the room, Braden fingers were tracing her spine.

“I’m sorry.” Clementine whispered, she wanted a relationship to work with Braden, she really did. He was her first in a lot and she never regretted anything but she regretted how they just seemed to not be able to work out and how it just wasn’t easy.

“I’m sorry too Clemsy.” Braden kissed the top of her head, not only was she someone he had fallen in love with but she had become his best friend over the years and he hated that no matter how hard they tried they knew it wouldn’t work out between them.

They both deserved an amazing relationship and be treated the way they deserved and being in a long distance relationship and having schedules that don’t aline made it very difficult for that to happen.

“You are so gorgeous and i was lucky to be able to love you and to get the chance to be loved by you. You’re gonna find someone that it’s just easy with.” Braden held her face in his hands memorizing everything up close in case he never gets the chance again.

“And you are a totally asshole but you’re kind and funny and seem to light up a room no matter what, anyone will be luckily to have you B.” Clementine whispered back giving him a small sad smile and resting her forehead against his. Braden let out a small sad laugh.

They knew in another life they would’ve of worked out.
