RECOMMENDATION OF THE HOUR (08/2024)

It Just Takes Time. Directed by Joel Haver, 2024.

As August got closer to finishing, I was worried about what my monthly recommendation would look like, and that was because barely any of the movies I watched that month were notably good... ...but before I could lose all hope, Joel Haver uploaded to YouTube and saved the day. Haver's fifth feature in the span of a single year, It Just Takes Time is a very poignant slice of life. It's nothing crazy ambitious, but it's a well-crafted glimpse into the feeling of recollecting times gone past. Reuniting with a place, or a friend, or a hobby is such a beautiful thing, and the warmth is communicated well in this piece.

dax flame cant hold a candle to prime kyle mooney

something something the way the Dax symbiont latches onto loves from past lives and never seems to truly get over them and will retain those feelings for years and years, into new hosts, and how this doesnt seem like its the norm for joined Trill and rather a reflection of how deeply Dax loves

in "Dax" they dont confirm it one way or the other, but Jadzia's determination to keep Enina's secret- even at the cost of herself- to me indicates that she still holds some feelings for her

in "Rejoined" we get our first textually canon instance of the Dax symbiont still holding feelings for a previous flame. this one is particularly interesting because both Dax and the Kahn symbiont are in different hosts now- Torias Dax and Nilani Kahn were the ones once married- and these feelings carry over into these new hosts. Jadzia- and Dax- are even willing to be exiled and completely end the Dax line in order to be with Lenara. to me this is THE big indication of just how deep Dax's love can run, even after so many years

this also extends after Jadzia, and we see it in Ezri. Ezri has her brief romance with Worf, and throughout the season we do see her have to grapple with those feelings for him since him and Jadzia were married, which means that Dax itself still has feelings for Worf. and, once again, we see that Dax is completely willing to risk exile by becoming involved with a past lover. ill even raise this applies to Julian, with the whole "if Worf hadn't come along, it would've been you" thing, implying that Jadzia at least had some attraction/feelings for him, and which Ezri pursued

this also extends into Beta canon. in "Alone Together" Julian says that him and Ezri were married, and after Ezri's death, him and the next Dax host were together for a bit, but ultimately broke it off. yes, this is Beta canon, but it very much follows in the pattern of Dax and its hosts continuing to harbour feelings into different lives, and on multiple occasions being willing to be exiled from Trill society and end the Dax line about it

I think its a really interesting trait of the symbiont considering how out of the norm it seems to be in Trill society. I think this tracks with how we see Jadzia and subsequently Ezri interact with friendships gained in past lives. Jadzia maintains several friendships with Klingons that Dax made while Curzon was host, and is deeply loyal to her Klingon friends- see "Blood Oath" for a really specific example of that. there's also Jadzia's relationship to Sisko, how easily she slots into being best friends with him, because Curzon was his mentor. and see this, again, with how quickly Ezri is drawn to being his friend. Ezri also slots nicely into the DS9 crew and clearly cares about all of them right from the get-go, Dax having been so close with all of them as Jadzia

its just interesting to see through different hosts how the Dax symbiont seems to be deeply loving and has trouble letting go of that love, even as much as decades later, in completely different lives. Lenara puts some of the blame on Curzon, who was impulsive and eager for romance, but I honestly think its more that Dax just loves deeply and with its entire self, and it cant help but transfer that into each new host it gets
