RECOMMENDATION OF THE HOUR (04/2024)

Hundreds of Beavers. Directed by Mike Cheslik, performance by who knows how many beavers, SRH, 2024.

Everyone was talking their heads off about it. I had to check it out, and it delivered in every single way.

Hundreds of Beavers really does feel like something Charlie Chaplin would have made if he knew After Effects. It's proof that slapstick is a timeless art, and that modern advances in technology can allow slapstick to transcend beyond just a few styles.

The movie is a feature-length silent cartoon, featuring the chronicles of a man gaining more hunting experience with limited resources. During the first few minutes alone, I was hit with visual gags at an astonishing pace. It's hard for me to describe what to expect without parroting what other people say.

Everybody simply needs to watch it at least once.

the top in this 10 is "off the top of my head", tbh. i also didn't list ten, and these aren't in any particular order. these also aren't my all time favorites (necessarily. i think a couple on this list qualify)

Anotoki Kara Sukidattanda to Omo (and its sequel)

here's the thing: this bl is not good and most people aren't going to like it. it is schlocky, messy, and melodramatic, it's borderline surreal, extremely absurd, relentlessly horny, and it has the pacing of a tiktok edit to an early 100 gecs song set to 150% speed. very prototypical in a lot of ways, one of the most unique bl i've ever read in others. an absolute fever dream. but it's one of those things i read at just the right time, and there's something about it that means a lot to me. it's first so you understand how esoteric my taste gets right off the bat and have 0 expectations for anything else i put on this list. also some cws for this one so like you can dm me if you want to know.

Reunion (by 2coin and deulsum)

something you need to know about me is i really love manhwa that people think is boring and by god reunion is that bitch. long-winded, gently achy character study with identity porn. it's shockingly lowkey, grounded, and comforting to read for it's initial premise... that being "poor guy with terminally ill mother poses as the dead grandchild of a rich terminally ill old dude's nanny in order to pay for his mom's treatment and his brother's schooling and oh no there's this mean chaebol grandson who is obsessed with him except it's 7 years later and the chaebol grandson has amnesia and gives his boss a briefcase of cash to buy him" you'll see what i mean when you read it, it's really actually good. you'll like it if you like quiet slowburns.

Eat Your Heart Out (by Samak Satang and AI_tuner)

do you like scalies? do you like amazing worldbuilding? do you like plotlines about social class and eugenics? do you like yandere older brothers? do you like aggressive bottoms who are slutty and insufferable? do you like 2 and a half foot long dicks? boy do i have a one of a kind manhwa for you. eat your heart out was an unexpected delight right from the start due to it's amazing art and character design. but then i got to know helm and i fell deeply, deeply in love. he is just so fucking annoying and borderline unlikeable at times in a way that makes him an amazing protagonist. crazy about this one, a new favorite for sure. also i am not joking about dick size. you are reading "two and a half foot long dick" and thinking to yourself "surely, danny is exaggerating" i am not exaggerating. please pray for helm. he is not making it out alive.

Tameshi ni Komando Itte mita

if you like domsubverse you probably won't like this domsubverse. if you don't like domsubverse im also not sure if you'll like this. really, to enjoy this you should have a neutral opinion on domsubverse and a positive opinion on kissing the homies goodnight. dom getting dommed. sweet, bunny-soft, funny, and i just really love the relationship between the two leads.

90 Days for the Delicacy

phew, look at those two whole normal recommendations! time for bdsm and gore! i can't really tell you anything about the plot of this one without spoiling it. im sorry, i hate when people do that to me, too. if you know what my favorite manga are: this is in a similar genre.

Nekura to Gyaru Otoko

a simple manga about an outgoing gyaru boy, his childhood friend who has spent his life taking up as little space as possible, and the quiet, painful conflict that causes. one of the first manga i read this year that made a lasting impression on me. i love the art, i love the characters, i love the quiet moments in the story, i love it's bluntness, i love it's weight and temperature and how it tastes when i read it. a must-read for chronic doormats and those who would rather die than burden people they love, imo.

One Summer Day (by ker)

grim reaper fucks up a reaping reaaaal bad and has to babysit his charge until the paperwork comes in. unfortunately being still-alive when you're not supposed to be comes with some... side effects. such as becoming a huge murderslut. good news though! the cure for undead murderslutism is in fact nasty sloppy bareback marathon sex. this is by the same author+artist as sign and i absolutely love it. the characters are likeable and you can feel that this one is going to suckerpunch you with pain between the multi-hour fuckfests.

Spectrophilia

a young man is haunted by his past... literally. and, uh, hornily. after attending the funeral of his highschool bully/situationship/best friend the protagonist finds himself plagued by raunchy "dreams", the star of which being his dead friend. i think i started this in 2023 and i don't care you should read spectrophilia. the art style is really unique and im crazy about it. slow, quiet, a hint of yandere. don't ask me why two entries on this list feature dead people.

OΣG!!! = Oh My God

lets round this out with a banger i fucking love oh my god, it's great, it's gore-camp, it's playfully dark, and the characters are fun! it's a yandere serial killer/salaryman romance wrapped up in an amazing art style and slutty bloodsplatter. this one's light, easy, fun, and exactly what it's trying to be. i adore it.

Scary Marlowe is like one of THE MOST teen girl characters in the world and I’m nuts about it. She is simultaneously cathartic and a cautionary tale, simultaneously a satire and yet so real. I’ve been her, I’ve known her, I’ve loved her, I’ve hated her, she is everything to me, no one understands her like I do and yet she is so painfully relatable. I could scream and cry and yell about her all day long she makes me sick

Dawn of DC: Superman

Annual #1 Review

I loved this comic. It focuses on Lois Lane. In this issue Clark is off fighting Toy Man the whole time, while Lois is trying to run the Daily Planet. She’s really frustrated with her reporters and tries to challenge them. When this doesn’t seem to fully work, she decides to go interview Live Wire. After Leslie saves Lois’ life, Lois thinks maybe she’s redeemable and gives her a column in the Daily Planet.

Rating: 7/10

Just watched Wonka today and it was amazing and he is my favorite willy wonka. Also hugh grant had a small part in it so heads up & same with mr.bean.

The movie is family friendly and light hearted and is full of music and humor. The moral of the movie is be the good in the world, never give up on your dreams & never grow up is what I got from it.

10/10 would watch again.

Also got bad feeling by jagwar twin on repeat, they really should've put that song in the credits or something its so good!!

Went and watched Wonka today.

Have to say that is was slightly better than expected. Not very serious movie, good to just relax with. All the characters were the best part, each and every single one.

Love that it went back to like old musicals. Love that there is not any love interests, just found family stuff going on. This movie is really just all about found family, like wow they got the whole package about a built family for Wonka.

Wonka is still the best character and most relatable. Noodles is another amazing character, those two made the movie. Like they are amazing sibling relationship described.

If you have not seen the movie, I recommend it. A good calmer movie compared to most movies now days. Great for relaxing with, loving characters, and if you love musicals this is one good one!

Single handedly saved the character willy wonka for me because the others scare me too much to even attempt to watch again (I remember watching a little of the first two but got scared lmao) and this movie was so good and fun. I love that its a musical & I love Timothée Chalamet as he is the perfect willy wonka. Also hugh grant and mr.bean had like the smallest parts EVER and idk why theyre even in the movie…Im getting a little off topic— the movie is definitely a must see as it made me feel so genuinely happy & like I was alive again if that makes sense, its like a reawakening. Im definitely not the same person that went into the movie theater.

Also again, idk why some people hated it, maybe they hate joy & happiness & life itself??Thats the only thing that makes sense to me because the movie is amazing.

RECOMMENDATION OF THE HOUR (03/2024)

Wolfwalkers. Directed by Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart, Cartoon Saloon, 2020.

My first encounter with Cartoon Saloon's bold vision was a couple years ago when my family borrowed The Secret of Kells. It was during a phase where my father was starting to become interested in the more low-key animated movies. Think Isle of Dogs, Ernest & Celestine, and so on.

I was very pleased to see Cartoon Saloon's geometric fairytale world return once more in Wolfwalkers, a story about two girls whose spirits take the form of wolves during the night. The movie takes place in a town which does not take kindly to wolves, which is an issue when one of the inhabitants is secretly friends with a wolfwalker.

I think there's merit in a movie where the visual language doesn't get in the way of its emotional value. Wolfwalkers does this well. Amid the stunning colors and shapes this movie has to offer, I also feel sympathy for characters like Mebh who are misunderstood.

I was seeing a ballet yesterday, and naturally I gained inspiration to make an AU for BC out of it, so here have Blind Channel as Giselle:

part I:

our main character of the story is Olli: a peasant boy living his life in a beautiful little village enclosed by forests and fields, son to a family owning the local tavern 🍻

due to his families good status, there's not many worries to his daily life

only: his heart

there's Aleksi, huntsman of the area, a young man who has grown up alongside Olli, their families close due to their professions, and for years the two boys have played together in the close creek, or the flower fields, or spend long evenings observing the drunk patrons, and Aleksi has always liked teaching Olli about the wildlife, the traces the animals left in the dirt, and adored how eagerly Olli has listened to his words, and how adorable he looked with his big eyes when Aleksi has found a particularly beautfiful flower 🌸

it was no surprise (to him or anyone else except Olli) that Aleksi fell in love, and for him it was etched in stone that Olli would marry him as soon as Aleksi asked him to

but then why did Olli block off all of his romantic advances?

it didn't deter Aleksi from his mission however; every day he would make sure to see him, and bring him and his family gifts, little presents that would make Olli's life brighter and keep him in his mind

part II:

Joonas has always liked the forest more than his home, a big castle with every richness that he could think of. but the thick tress around him gave him the one thing his status as a nobleman couldn't provide: freedom ⚜

the little village at the edge has always peeked his interest, and not even his squire could keep him from his newly formed plan

it was one day where he just had to wander off somewhere where noone knew him and his duties, and so he just dumped his mantle and sword into his squire's arms and ordered him to hide his possession in an abandoned shed

and oh how much lighter his steps were from then on, and how much fresher the air smelled, and...

how beautiful this boy looked!

it was by no means an easy feat to get the boy to even look at him without golden locks shielding his eyes, and rednes to cover his cheeks; his shyness the cutest thing Joonas has ever seen

but how much better it was even to be able to hold Olli's hands, to hold him by his waist, to spin him around, see him laughing!

his heart was gone, it was no longer his, all of it belonged to Olli, and Joonas was sure he would never meet someone as loving as him (there was an admonishing voice in the back of his head reminding him of a fiancé, but Joonas was good at keeping it quiet) 🌞

part III:

Aleksi, after time growing suspsicious that Olli was drawing back more and more, and wondered where his best friend and lover was venturing off to couldn't hold back a cry of pain when he saw him and a man of unknown to him arm and arm with each other

it couldn't be! Olli has been his forever, and should have been his forever! ⚡

he had to know who that man was, and so one evening Aleksi quietly followed the mystery man all the way to a shed, and witnessed as he put on a royal red cape, a sword, and took a trail that led him to a horse bound to a tree

this man couldn't be from here, couldn't be from their village or from any around them, there was only one conclusion, and Aleksi couldn't believe it

that nobleman could have everyone, had probably many people laying to his feet, but he had to come here, and take Olli away from him?!

meanwhile the harvesting festivities were in full swing and there was even word the Duke would come honour the village! 🍁🍂🧅

and it was Aleksi's perfect chance

after having to watch Olli and that lying man prance around the marketplace his time has come: just when the party of noblemen and the Duke was to arrive and Joonas took his leave, Aleksi took him by his collar and pinned him down to declare to the whole village what evil was among them, and opened Olli's eyes to the hoax he has fallen victim to

he produced the nobleman's sword as a proven fact, and it fell to the ground as loudly shattering to his ears as Olli's cries were

the madness has gotten him! Aleksi tried to support his friend's body, calling for him to be relieved, to spare his tears; it was alright now, Aleksi was by his side, danger was gone, he would never have to see that man again, but Olli only pushed him aside, trying to cling to Joonas who by now showed only defeat 💔🖤

it was a dance of lunacy, and Aleksi gasped when Olli took hold of Joonas' sword and-

it was too late. two pair of hands stretched to prevent him from doing this horrific act, but the sword was already pushed into his abdomen by his own doing

Olli was laying on the ground in a pool of blood that was quickly washed away by weeping men, both Aleksi and Joonas alike

part IV:

because of his suicide Olli wasn't granted a place in the local cemetery but had to be buried somewhere in the forest, at a place many sould have found their last place for many different but sad reasons

Aleksi was there this first night when on his way back home he made a detour to visit Olli's grave ✝

he could sit there for hours, staring, crying, screaming, regretting, so much regretting

dong dong dong dong dong dong dong dong dong dong dong dong

it was time, and Aleksi has lost it

this hour was for the vila, and this place was theirs to hunt: the many women who got abandoned on their wedding days and gotten their hearts broken and betrayed by men to the point of their deaths and were now on a path of vengeance 💢⚔

and they have gotten Aleksi circled, a lonesome grieving target, and he was theirs to use a puppet, to make him dance dance dance till the sun got up and his feet bled and his lungs gave up and his body broke and he joined the land of the dead

the same fate could fall upon Joonas, who just as Aleksi found his way to Olli's grave, and this night too he was there at the feet of the stone cross

and he could swear he was hearing Olli's whispering, and a swish of white fabric at the corner of his eye made him turn around and there he was: a beautiful etheral appearance

but it wasn't the only one. more and more white creatured with long hair and veiles appeared and within seconds it seemed he was in the center of them

one of them, glowing and with a crown sparkling in the moonlight, came gliding towards him-

but Olli was suddenly between them, begging to leave him be, but Joonas was already enchanted, his feet no longer dancing to his own will

and Olli was desperate, knew that every second was more like 30 minutes for Joonas, and he was aware he couldn't survive as long as their queen was continuining her plan of torture and her subjects of vila helped her bring death upon all men

Olli didn't want to be part of this; yes he had been betrayed, but he was one thing his queen never experienced: forgiving

he couldn't hate Joonas, he could never

it didn't matter who Joonas actually was, he had won his heart fair and square with his charm, and his wit and his jokes, and his warmth, and Olli didn't want him to suffer like he did; he had to protect him

he kept pleading as he protected Joonas to his best ability, they only had to make it to sunrise and they would be safe🌤

Olli could move on, and perhaps Joonas could move on, and his queen wouldn't have any power over both them anymore

it wasn't long any more, they had to make it!

not long anymore!

END

There's three different endings to this story originally and you can decide for yourself if Joonas survives or not. Aleksi is supposed to die though, and for this story I think it would be nice if Olli is freed and he and Aleksi meet in some kind of after-life and continue to h(a)unt the forest together, playing like when they were children, Olli having forgiven him and understanding that Aleksi only wanted the best for him, and Aleksi understanding that no matter what he did he couldn't just decide to take Olli's heart. Happy end, all was well :)

Summary:
