She arched a brow, letting a chilly half-smile cross her lips. “Yes, Father. But you’ll forgive me if I find endless parading a little tiresome.”

His nostrils flared—hardly noticeable to anyone who didn’t know him well—but maintained a genial tone. “This is for your benefit, Lily. You’ll meet some very important people tonight—one of whom is rather promising.”

“Of course,” Lily replied sweetly, voice edged with sarcasm. “Now, who’s the lucky man this time?”

"I think a lot of the internal forces in Our Flag are the villains. It’s like, Can you let yourself be loved? Do you know what you want in love? If you know what you want, are you healthy enough to get it? When you start going into the tropes of [Blackbeard impression] Oh, should I be gay or not? or Oh, my friends did me dirty — we’ve seen that a lot. It’s good dramatic fuel, but I don’t think those are the things that drive the show.

I think the things that drive this show are a bunch of people who care about each other and are trying to figure out how to have relationships. And relationships are hard. Usually, you’re your own bad guy or gal or person in a relationship. It’s rarely [someone] doing something terrible to you — it’s you just trying to figure out your own shit."

I love this show so much. Especially these kinds of interviews, where the interviewer so obviously is trying square peg questions and David is giving round hole answers.

Queens Move: Chapter 1.2

“Daniel Wu” Mr. Zhang said, every inch the cordial host, “so glad you could attend. May I formally introduce my daughter, Lily.”

Her father proceeded with the usual script. “Lily, Daniel has exciting developments in tech expansions globally. In fact, we were just discussing how synergy with our family’s interests might be beneficial.” He pivoted to Lily with mild enthusiasm. “Wouldn’t that be something, dear?”

“Oh, indeed,” Lily murmured, her accent clipped. “A great synergy, I’m sure.” Her eyes flicked up to Daniel’s, letting him see the glint of disinterest. She half-expected him to slink away.

Daniel Wu’s gaze flicked from Mr. Zhang to Lily, sweeping over her form as though appraising merchandise. “Miss Zhang,” he said, voice dripping with a silky baritone. “A pleasure to finally meet you in person. Your father speaks highly of you.”

Lily’s smile didn’t reach her eyes. “Yes, he does that," She allowed a brief handshake—then quickly let go, crossing her arms in front of her.

A flicker of surprise flitted across Daniel’s face, but he pressed on.

Clearing his throat, "I have big plans—expanding my tech ventures globally. Your father mentioned you’re quite the interior designer, Miss Zhang. Perhaps you can do a consultation for my offices in Bridgeport?”

“My father exaggerates,” Lily replied briskly. “I’m selective with clients, you see.”

He took a step closer, ignoring her subtle retreat. “I admire your exacting taste. Perhaps we can arrange a private dinner, discuss possibilities?” His eyes lingered on her face, then roamed downward.

Heat rose in Lily’s cheeks, not from flattery but outrage. She gritted her teeth behind a thin smile. “I’d prefer any such discussion remain in a professional setting. If I choose to take on the project.”

Mr. Zhang offered a light laugh meant to downplay Lily’s pointed comment. “My daughter is quite direct,” he said to Daniel. “It’s part of her charm, I assure you.”

Daniel’s hungry eyes didn’t waver. “I enjoy a challenge,” he said, leaning closer to Lily than she liked.

Before he could pin her further, Lily spoke up, forging a path of escape. “Excuse me, Father, Mr. Wu. I believe I see someone I must greet. Please continue your synergy chat without me.”

Her father attempted to intervene. “We weren’t finished, Lily—”

But she flashed a brittle smile. “I’m sure you can fill me in later.”

Daniel started to protest, but Lily slipped away into the crowd, heart pounding with the small victory.

She would pay for her “uncooperative” behavior, but at that moment, she didn’t care. She needed some fresh air.
