Porterâs Boys
Charles Stewart was the last of his generation but was able to see his friendâs biological son and adopted son do amazing feats in the navy.
Fun story Dixon Porter wrote in the memoir about his father is âone of his sons who does not need to be namedâ had a craving for pigeon pie and wanted to impress his friend. Both boys opened a cage of pigeons the senior Porter brought from Tripoli and started shooting at them to collect. What they didnât know was father was on his way early from business and when he heard the gunshots, raced even faster home.
The boys after shooting the pigeons climbed into the cherry trees because why not? Young Dixon (weâll assume đ) did not hear his father march through the grounds fuming.
âWho killed those pigeons?â A voice shouted! Little Dixon not recognizing his father thinking it was his friend replied âI did Uncle Tom, and the old man will have to send a sloop of war to Tunis to get a supply, for thereâs dead ones enough to keep you in pigeon pie for a month, so pick them up before pop gets home!â
When Dixon heard the order to come down, he knew he was in deep! Senior Porter whipped Dixonâs rear once but when he was about to strike again, the son jumped out the tree and ran across the yard chased by his father yelling at him to stop! Around they went in circles and daddy Porter knowing he was not gaining on his son started giving out. Young Porter looked over his shoulder and sang out âPop if you didnât chase the British better than that, no wonder you made so little prize money!â
Commodore Porter began to laugh at the situation but didnât forget the little friend up in the tree. After giving the other lad a good whip or two for not owning up to his fault, the Commodore made a deal to the boys that they could have half the pigeons if they took care of them and not shoot them again.

Crowd Scenes . 05 November 2024 . The Peacemakers . George P.A. Healy . 27 March 1865
The Peacemakers is an 1868 painting by George P.A. Healy. It depicts the historic March 27, 1865, strategy session by the Union high command on the steamer River Queen during the final days of the American Civil War. Although he painted it in at least two versions, the largest was destroyed by fire in 1893, and the second sat unknown in storage for decades. Since 1947, it has been in the White House collection.
Historical setting
In March 1865, General-in-Chief Ulysses S. Grant invited President Lincoln to visit his headquarters at City Point, Virginia. By coincidence, Major General William Tecumseh Sherman (then campaigning in North Carolina) happened to visit City Point at the same time. This allowed for the war's only three-way meeting of President Lincoln, General Grant, and General Sherman.[4] Also present was Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter, who wrote about the meeting in his journal, and later recounted:
I shall never forget that council which met on board the River Queen. On the determinations adopted there depended peace, or a continuation of the war with its attendant horrors. That council has been illustrated in a fine painting by Mr. Healy, the artist, who, in casting about for the subject of an historical picture, hit upon this interview, which really was an occasion upon which depended whether or not the war would be continued a year longer. A single false step might have prolonged it indefinitely.

I donât know where to find the time for this
Usually the point of buying books is to read them. My hand slipped and I ordered three more books; two books about âPrebleâs Boysâ (naval officers who served under commodore Edward Preble and became influential especially during the War of 1812) and a memoir of David Porter a âPreble Boyâ.
The memoir was written by David Porterâs son David Dixon Porter (the second admiral made in the United States and served during the Civil War) so I didnât mind paying a bit extra for this antique copy. I canât say too much since this would be officially the first time reading about him but, arenât first hand accounts best to start with when learning about something?

The Fantastic Union Navy Four as Midshipmen
.
Obviously this is all just my imagining đđ â they were never midshipmen concurrently (in fact, by the time Dolph joined in 1826, Glasgow was already a Lieutenant (and married for 2 years already(!))). How they looked is also my imagining, though I tried to base it on their younger selves' looks.
The number on top of them (in the fifth picture) is the age when they were first commissioned midshipmanš, while the number below is the year of their commissionš. Farragut was commissioned in 1810 (aged 9), Lee was commissioned in 1825 (aged 13), Dahlgren was commissioned in 1826 (aged 17).
(1â except for Deedee â the year 1823 was more the year when he first sailed with his father in the Navy (he was probably rated boy seaman at this point). Porter was properly commissioned midshipman in the US Navy only in 1829, aged 16)
#interesting when you put them all together like this#dolph was the second oldest but joined the last among the four#as for deedee's year it's kinda fuzzy actually...#1823 was the year he joined his father in the navy#but he was only properly comissioned midshipman in 1829#(it was a long story honestly lmao)#drawing#original art#manga#pen and ink#traditional art#fountain pen#fan art#david farragut#david glasgow farragut#john a dahlgren#john dahlgren#samuel phillips lee#david dixon porter#midshipman monday#american history#american civil war#maritime history

Full view of the sword.
A couple of things I forgot to add. Look at the chandelier!
Decatur House pt 1
Interesting thing that the tour guide pointed out is on the door lock is the British Coat of Arms purposefully upside down.
The Sword on the mantle is a real commemorative Sword from the state of Virginia to Stephen Decatur for his services. Thereâs an inscription about his victory over the HMS Macedonian on it.
#1812 commodores#prebleâs boys#war of 1812#us navy#stephen decatur#rosey travels#washington dc#commodore stephen decatur#Picture of William Bainbridge#he knew he was plotting Decaturâs demise#interesting that David Dixon Porter mentioned his father David Porterâs part in the duel#Iâll pull it up some time
