Forty Days of Frankenstein, Day Twenty-two: Very please to bring you this sequence of delightful little Frankenstein pictures this evening. For fans of the 1962 Bobby Pickett song "Monster Mash" (and, let's face it, if you're reading this, you're probably one of them), artist David Catrow has turned it into a monstrously creative children's book. If you remember the song, you'll recall that the narrator tells how: "... my monster, from his slab, began to rise / And suddenly, to my surprise / he did the Monster Mash, etc." Well exactly that happens in the pictures, but also so much more! I have to say, it's not often one sees a ginger Frankenstein. I love the detail that not only have his neck electrodes here been reinterpreted as screws ("flat-head," naturally!) but that he's also got screws at his ankles, apparently holding his socks up, which one needs if one is going to Mash properly.

Feel free to read or sing the book aloud to your little one. Singing can help build your child's phonological awareness because it focuses on the rhythm and rhyme structure of the story.

You can talk about the different ghouls and goblins you encounter on every page, which will help build up your child's background knowledge.

okay this literally took me half an hour to figure out the name but it’s David Catrow’s Dinosaur Hunt.

I picked this book up at the libray where I work. I am looking for books to read to my neighbors 4 grandchildren who are at risk. I am looking for positive messages and enjoyable art. I am glad I read this book before I took it to them. These children are all 6 and under and the problem behaviors they have include destructive behavior to property including breaking glass decorations, drawing scratching on the walls/floors/tables, fighting (I mean to the point where one of then knocked another out with a brick!), lying, running around with no clothes on, and a potential to be abusive to animals. So anyway, I read through this book and it starts off with the child having already painted the house and his mother taking his paints away, then he piles up furniture and climbs on them an gets the paints down, then paints himself, and apparently the dog because it becomes covered in paint, then he takes his underwear off and is running around naked, preparing to paint his butt when his mother finds him, putting both he and the dog in the tub. So although this book might be suitable for some children, it would not be for the ones I had hoped to check it out for. They are being helped to overcome major behavioral problems and many of the problems are being shown in this book as fun. This book could seriously confuse them. So please read it first and think about the individual child, or children, that you plan to share it with. I certainly would not read it to a storytime group, or classroom, of children that I did not know VERY well. Also, some parents (and some children) may find the illustration of the child's naked backside offensive or disturbing.

18 Picture Books Every Cabin Needs

There are few things more important to me than giving kids my love of reading. Open their eyes to new ways of thinking, allow them to live in different worlds, and develop a love for seeking other’s stories. Comprehension is better achieved when kids can tie what they’re reading to the things they are seeing in the world, and vice-versa. So I have picked some of my favorite stories that relate to animals, nature, exploration, adventure, and seeking and creating beauty.

Read these books and discuss them on your next family hike, picnic, or nature scavenger hunt.

While you are reading, talk about the things they have seen recently: leaves, bugs, flowers, animals

Let your children add their own stories to reading time.

Encourage your children to use these stories as inspiration as they play: go on a bear hunt, act like bears as you pick blueberries, search for woozles.

Rereads

Neverwhere/Neil Gaiman (adult portal fantasy)-Richard is living a mostly normal life in London when he takes care of a girl he finds bleeding on the street. In quick succession, he’s promised that two assassins will kill him, his fiancee breaks up with him, and nobody can see him except the residents of another, more dangerous, London.

4.5 Stars

Chrissa Stands Strong/Mary Casanova and Richard Jones (Chrissa #2) (middle grade realistic fiction)-Chrissa’s super excited to get into the swim team, but someone starts posting mean messages on the website.

I Walk in Dread: The Diary of Deliverence Trembley, Witness to the Salem Witch Trials, Massachsetts Bay Colony, 1691/Lisa Rowe Fraustino (middle grade epistolary historical fiction)-Liv is living alone with her sister-her uncle is supposed to come back any day now, he promised-when girls her age start acting strangely. They say that witches are possessing them.

3.5 Stars

Fifteen/Beverly Cleary (young adult romance)-Jane Purdy wants to meet a boy. She’s finished her first year of high school, after all, and it would be so nice to go out riding with a boy and have everyone see her. Then she does meet a boy and everything seems too good to be true. If only she knew that he liked her, too. 

Tallchief: America’s Prima Ballerina/Maria Tallchief, Rosemary Wells and Gary Kelley (picture book auto/biography)-Maria Tallchief is considered the US’s first prima ballerina. An autobiography for kids, detailing her life since she was a baby until she moved to NYC.

2.5 Stars 

A Duet for Home/Karina Yan Glaser (middle grade realistic fiction)-It’s June’s first day in the homeless shelter. It’s Tyrell’s 1275th. But it’s a safe space for both of them right now. When they learn that a new project has started to get people out of homeless shelters faster without care for their wellbeing they know they have to fight it.

The Expedition of Humphry Clinker/Tobias Smollet (epistolary humor satire travel fiction)-A hypochondriac, his unmarried-but-very-much-wants-to-be sister, their college aged nephew, innocent niece and personal servants travel throughout England and Scotland in 1776.

The Help/Kathryn Stockett (adult historical fiction)-Aibileen is a Black maid in Civil Rights in the US South. She’s raising her 17th white child while her employer is building her a separate toilet. The whole city is reaching a breaking point.

Speak Up, Molly Lou Melon/Patty Lovell and David Catrow (Molly Lou Melon #3) (didactic picture book)-There’s a new boy in Molly Lou Melon’s school. When one of her friends teases him she has to speak up.

Yinka, Where Is Your Huzband?/Lizzie Damilola Blackburn (adult coming-of-age novel)-Yinka’s mother is praying over to get a husband. Her sister is pregnant. Her cousin is engaged. She decides to get a boyfriend by the time her cousin’s wedding comes, six months away.

 2 Stars 

Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon/Patty Lovell and David Catrow (Molly Lou Melon #1) (didactic picture book)-Molly Lou Melon is different from the other kids. But when a boy in her new school starts teasing her she knows exactly what to do.

Warriors in Winter/Mary Pope Osborne and A.G. Ford (Magic Tree House #32)  (children’s fantasy time travel)-Jack and Annie are sent to a Roman base-without a book! They have a mission to complete before they get executed as spies or deserters.

1.5 Stars

The Day You Begin/Jacqueline Woodson and Rafael López (didactic picture book)-A book about how everyone is different and that’s fine.

In Other Lands/Sarah Rees Brennan (young adult/new adult fantasy coming-of-age)-Elliot thought he’d like being in magic land, but nearly everyone is constantly training for war and he’s a sworn pacifist. So he decides to eliminate all war by the time he graduates magic school. Oh, and get Serene to date him.

  Materials:

The Legend of Rock, Paper, Scissors by Drew Daywalt

  Instructional Procedures: (This is a great story to use during the first month of school). 

Before you start the lesson, have students partnered up. One partner is partner A and the other is partner B. 

Raise your hand if you have ever played rock, paper, scissors? It is a great way to help solve a quick problem, like who gets to go first in a game. 

Start by showing the cover, reading the title, and explaining what a legend is.  A legend is a fiction, or made up, story that tells how something came to be. So, this is not really how rock, paper, scissors started, but it is a very funny and imaginative story! 

Read the story. The beginning is about rock. Ask students to show you rock with their fist. Next is the paper part. Ask students to show you paper with a flat hand. Then comes the scissors part. Ask students to show you their hand scissors. 

When rock and scissors meet in the story, just read the first page. Have partner groups turn and face each other. Tell them partner A is rock and partner B is scissors. Show them the correct way to conduct their battle-rock, paper, scissors, shoot. Once they say shoot, A chooses rock and B chooses scissors. Read the page that says “Rock versus Scissors!” and then tell students to battle. Who wins? Rock! Rock beats scissors!

Next is rock versus paper. This time partner A is paper and partner B is rock (or however you want to do it). Have students battle again! Who wins this time? Paper! Paper beats rock!

 Last is paper versus scissors. Now partner A is scissors and partner B is paper. Have students battle again! Who wins? Scissors! Scissors beats paper! 

Finish reading the story. Tell students we will now have a rock, paper, scissors competition. You will start with your partner. Whoever wins will continue battling. (The idea is to let students practice so all students know how to participate when the time comes. Make sure they are all doing it correctly so no one gets mad or frustrated). 

Round 1-Partner A versus Partner B. Whoever wins stays put, and whoever loses stands up and sits against the wall. Round 2-Students find someone to battle. Winner stays and the loser moves away. Continue until one person wins!

Librarian will monitor the way students are conducting their rock, paper, scissors battles. Everyone should be doing it the same way-rock, paper, scissors, shoot. Correct students if needed and help them practice doing it the right way.
