Chandelier
Generally when we think of chandeliers we think of exquisite pieces in formal, elegant spaces. However, chandeliers can also be rustic or contemporary statement pieces that can enhance the appeal of a comfortable, grounded cabin room. In our cabin, we have four wagon wheel chandeliers in the great room that give a western flair to the whole space, a metal candelabra chandelier over the main dining table, that provides a large, powerful presence, and a more elegant art deco style chandelier over our pool table in our game room. I encourage everyone to look into getting at least one chandelier for their cabin, they provide good overhead lighting which brightens an overall space (less targeted than lamps or wall sconces) and they are big impact pieces, filling overhead vacant spaces and changing the feel of the room.
Location
Where do you want to hang your chandelier: this will impact the size, style, and amount of light needed.
Foyer: a statement piece that will be the first thing most people notice when they enter your cabin. Make sure that it captures the feel and tone you want for the entire cabin. Needs to be hung with enough clearance for everyone to walk under; unless, you hang it over an accent table.
Living Rooms/Great Rooms: consider using one large chandelier in the center of your room. Or, have several of the same chandeliers equally dispersed around a large space. Or, you can hang different styles and sizes over different seating areas to further split up an open area into different zones.
Dining Room: Generally, a medium sized chandelier, centered over the dining room table.
Game Room: centered over a pool table or a game table to add ambience to your gaming.
Bedroom: I love the look of a beautiful chandelier centered over a bed. Pick a chandelier with a dimmer to add romance to the space.
Kitchen: a long chandelier or several small ones over a long island, or over the kitchen table, or even over the kitchen sink.
Bathroom: imagine taking a long soak in a beautiful bathtub, under a small chandelier.
Size
Centered in a space: add the length of the space to the width of the space and convert the sum from feet to inches to find the size of chandelier you should look for.
Over a table: look for chandeliers with a diameter that is around 3/4 the width of the table.
When in doubt, size up. The chandelier should be the focal point of the room. But make sure you don’t overwhelm the space or obscure clearance.
Height
In an open space: hang the chandelier so the bottom is about 7′ from the floor, or a comfortable height for walking beneath.
Above a table: the bottom of the chandelier should be about 30″ from the top of the table.
Above a bed, sofa, bathtub: the bottom of the chandelier should hang about a foot above the person sitting below it.
Take into account the height of the fixture, the amount of chain provided, and the height of the rooms. If necessary, ask the provider for additional chain.
Style
Make sure that the style of the chandelier complements the style of the space and of the overall feel of your cabin. Don’t be afraid to use this piece to make a statement and add additional textures and materials to the room. But most importantly, look for fixtures that you love. The chandelier will be a focal point, so make sure that you enjoy the pieces that you pick.
Amount of Light
Think about the amount of light that the chandelier should provide for the space. Supplement with lamps, recessed lighting, and sconces. Consider whether you want the lights to dim, particularly for bedrooms and dining rooms. And also take not of the direction of the light, you want to watch out for glares or harsh lighting that could impede the enjoyment of the space.

Contemporary Table Lamps
When I moved away to college I brought my own dishes and bedding, but my first real adult furnishing was a beautiful, sculpted cast iron table lamp. I found this lamp while shopping a cute boutique with one of my friends. The lamp instantly caught my eye. But it was several hundred dollars, and I was a poor college student with a measly TA’s earnings. While living off of mac and cheese and dinners out with dates, it felt supremely impractical to invest in a lamp that cost several week’s pay. But I couldn’t stop thinking about the lamp, so I downgraded from mac and cheese to ramen and said yes to more dates… and bought the lamp! I still have this well-loved lamp, it has moved from apartment to apartment, across several states, from house to house, into storage several times while we have lived out of suitcases while traveling. But it is one of the few possessions that has survived countless deep cleanings. Consequently, it should come as no surprise, that while I no longer feel overwhelmed by spending several hundred dollars on a lamp, I think lamps serve as the heart and charm of the room.
Lamps provide extra lighting or mood lighting and they also add beauty and character without stealing focus from the larger, feature furnishings.
What to Consider While Looking at Table Lamps:
Where do you want the lamp: bedrooms, family rooms, dining room, hallways, porches, reading nook, bathroom, game room? Bedside tables, console tables, counters, coffee tables?
Do you want the lamp to serve as an accent or a centerpiece?
What direction do you want the light coming from?
What height do you want the light to be? General rule, while sitting next to the lamp, the bottom of the shade should be near eye level.
How bright do you want the lamps to be? Will they serve as a main source of lighting or a subtle enhancement?
Do you want a matching pair for bedside tables or end tables? Or do you prefer coordinating, but mismatched?
Style: use these accent lamps to enhance your aesthetic, while using them to add texture and color to your space.

Kitsch Cabin Table Lamps

Relaxing Bath Tubs
My ultimate self indulgence (and yes I know this is so basic) is a long bubble bath. I try to take one at least once a week. Here is my personal recipe: a comfortable bath tub, epsom salts/ bath bombs/ bubble bath, a delicious candle (picked for the season/my mood. I have a very real candle problem, last time we moved I collected the candles from around my home and the candle cupboard- yes, I have a candle cupboard, and I had nearly twenty candles. woof.), jazz music, my current book, dimmed lights, and a water bottle full of ice water (or if I need a little extra indulgence, Dr Pepper).
So obviously, I think that a good bathtub is a necessity for a cabin. You go to your cabin to relax, and there is no better way than a good soak.
How to Choose the Right Bathtub
Size
Consider how large your tub can be while fitting comfortably in the bathroom.
Look at different style options to see how each will fit the space.
Who will be using the bathtub: washing kids or full body soaks, how big does the bathtub need to be?
Location
Do you want your tub in front of a window?
Next to a fireplace?
In a corner?
In the center of the room?
Along a wall?
Style
Consider the style of the bathroom, the location of the tub, its use, your preferences.
Freestanding: usually a tub picked for its own beauty, can be installed anywhere it can be connected to plumbing, generally very heavy, make sure the floor can support the weight.
Clawfoot: a type of freestanding, with sculpted legs.
Alcove: surrounded by three walls and one open edge. The most common version of this is the shower/tub combo. Very practical.
Drop-in: just the tub shell, ‘dropped-into’ a framed enclosure that matches the room. Can ‘drop-in’ in a corner (generally very large), alcove, or against a wall.
Undermount: a type of drop-in that is flush with the floor. Flooring will cover the lip of the tub.
Material
Fiberglass: the most common type of bathtub material, fiberglass is cheap and fairly durable. It can be chipped and it is slightly porous, eventually it will begin to warp.
Porcelain: a beautiful and non-porous classic, the tubs will never warp. However, they are fragile and can be chipped or dented by heavy impact.
Acrylic: lightweight and non-porous, acrylic bathtubs will not warp and resistant to chipping and cracking.
Ceramic: comes in more styles and sizes than other materials but ceramic tubs do need continual maintenance.
Marble: beautiful, good at heat retention. Fairly expensive, heavy, and needs to be maintained to prevent discoloration.
Stone Resin: non-porous and durable, won’t warp and difficult to chip or dent. Excellent heat retention.
Cast Iron: heavy and non-porous, very good material for heat retention.
Wood: rustic elegance, these are beautiful options. They will last years, but not as durable as other high-end options.
Copper: rustic luxury, copper is beautiful, durable, good at retaining heat, and expensive.

Rustic Vanities
Vanities are the main feature of most bathrooms and their shape and style will determine the function and feel of the bathrrom. Bathrooms are generally smaller spaces, but with the right furniture choices, they can still provide big impact. The right choice in vanity will heighten the comfort and convenience of the room.
We have all been in bathrooms that feel overcrowded, messy, mismatched, or that lack necessities. And we have all been in bathrooms that contain everything we need, are clean, functional, beautiful, and have character. The first is the room everyone needs to visit; yet, uncomfortable and unpleasant. The latter, is a pleasant break from life, a room to perform the necessities but also refresh and breathe.
What to Consider While Looking at Vanities
Who Will be Using the Bathroom?
Is this a bathroom for you or your children? How tall do you want the vanity.
Is this a en suite, shared, or powder bath?
Do you want double sinks or separate sinks?
How much storage do you need?
How much counter space to you need?
How fancy do you want your vanity to be?
Size and Form
How large is your bathroom? You don’t want to overcrowd your space. Consider the flow of the bathroom and how people will be moving through the space.
Where is the plumbing? This may change if you want a floor or wall mounted vanity or you may need to change the plumbing.
Pay attention to how doors open (don’t forget shower doors if they open).
How much storage do you need?
Materials and Style
Think about how materials hold up to humidity (if this is a full bath) or stains (if kids are the primary occupants).
Consider how hard to clean different materials, grout, and color choices can be.
What is the overall aesthetic of the cabin? What feeling do you want to convey with the space?

Console Sinks and Trough Sinks
Console sinks and trough sinks are good for many bathrooms, especially if they are short on space or if you prefer a more minimal look. Both of these sinks don’t take up much room, provide a sleek/minimal appearance, and are fairly easy to clean. However, unlike sinks with a vanity, they do not include built in storage and they typically don’t have a lot of extra counter space.
Console Sinks
Console sinks can either be free standing on four legs or wall mounted (with two or four legs). If they are wall mounted, blocking needs to be installed behind the wall to hold the weight of the sink. These sinks are fairly unobtrusive, but the plumbing is exposed.
Console sinks remind me of traveling through Europe, a more minimal, sleek look. But they can also look rustic or vintage, depending on the style you pick. Pick one with porcelain and wood and beautiful exposed piping for a classic, vintage style. An oval base, or a marble sink for a throwback to the turn of the last century. Or clean lines and sharp edges for a more minimal, rustic look.
Trough Sinks
Trough sinks can have multiple faucets, like a double vanity- but without taking up as much space or they can just have single faucets but with the extended base. They are perfect for shared bathrooms. Like console sinks, if they are wall mounted, blocking needs to be installed behind the wall, and the plumbing is frequently exposed. Trough sinks are also a good fit for a country style or more rustic cabin. They are a good way to carry the style of the space through to the bathroom.
Trough sinks remind me of hand-scrubbing laundry, dishes, and babies at my grandparents’ old cabin, when I was young. They instantly transport me to a simpler time and (even when new) they carry a sense of history. A good fit for a rustic bathroom or your mudroom, great for washing muddy hands and shoes or get an extendable faucet and use to wash toddlers, dogs who have had too much fun and hiking boots.

There are few things that bring my family together like board games. It’s so much fun to gather at the end of the day and bond over some friendly (to slightly intense) competition. With big groups, we love to split up into teams and cheer each other on. It’s an enjoyable way to get everyone involved. Cabin Puzzles
This hobby definitely ages me more than any other, but I think puzzles are so much fun! Although, the only time we find the time (or even the desire) to sit down and work on a puzzle is at the cabin. It’s such an easy, passive activity that can be started, neglected, worked on again, throughout your whole vacation. You can work on them while watching movies (especially if you are like my family and have a hard time when your hands aren’t busy) or while carrying on conversations. It’s a great group activity. Your kids, your friends, your parents can all help, or attempt to help (unless you are like some people in my family- who shall not be named- who have to do all the work themselves). It’s a simple, enjoyable activity that brings a little added beauty to your coffee table and a sense of accomplishment when finished. And when you work on it together, a sense of camaraderie and teamwork.
A Couple Notes
**Caution: try really hard to not lose any of the pieces. If you have small children or pets, put the puzzle on a tall table. If it is a complex puzle, be careful while putting the pieces away. Because there are few things more aggravating than working on a puzle for hours only to find there are pieces missing.
Obviously, you can work on any puzzle, but here are some that I find on theme for a cabin. (My husband and I find few things more enjoyable than when things are on theme, which is why we ‘geyser mento root beer floats’ when we go to Yellowstone, and wy we like our puzzles to match the style of the cabin.)

There are few things more important to me than giving kids my love of reading. Open their eyes to new ways of thinking, allow them to live in different worlds, and develop a love for seeking other’s stories. 18 Books Every Cabin Should Have
I grew up in a family of readers, and that reading tradition has carried on, we are constantly exchanging book recommendations and giving books as presents. It’s no surprise that one of our favorite cabin activities is reading. Books are my very favorite thing. Built in bookshelves are wonderful, especially if you have a library, book nook, or office space. Entertainment Center
For most family rooms, the entertainment center is the focus of the room, it’s the thing all of your furniture is pointed at. The entertainment center supports a television, either just holding it up, or surrounding the center. Many people have built in cabinets or mounted televisions; or you can have a separate piece of furniture that provides a distinct style to the room, hiding the television and providing storage, or complement your entertainment area. So how do you pick the right center for you?
Size
Measure your television, the space for your TV should be several inches larger than your actual TV.
The size of the center should match the size of the room. If you have a large space, look for large pieces to fill it. Conversely, if you have a smaller room, look for smaller pieces that won’t overwhelm the room.
Make sure there is enough distance between the center and seating options. For televisions smaller than 40″ have at least 4-5′ between the seating area and the screen. For televisions larger than 40″ have at least 5-6′ of space.
Assess the amount of furnishings in your room and look at entertainment center options. Decide whether you prefer those that just hold the TV or those that surround it.
Style
Along with deciding whether you want furniture that supports or surrounds your television, you should decide whether you want your piece to highlight or hide your TV. You can have an open space for the television, or you can have it behind doors. This depends on whether you like to show off your media, or whether you would prefer to have it hidden while you aren’t using it.
Do you want to draw attention to the unit? If you do, get one with a more distinct style.
There are thousands of options: you can get an entertainment center that is understated, classic, rustic, ornate.
Also consider how much storage you want, or what types of things do you want to store. You can use your center to display art or books, or you can use shelves and drawers to hide media, games, toys, blankets, etc.

Blanket Chests and Steamer Trunks
In our cabin, we have an antique steamer trunk full of blankets. It sits against one of the large windows, and it is the first thing that the kids go to in the morning when they are grabbing blankets to cuddle while waiting for breakfast. And everyone goes to it in the evenings when we all want blankets for movies or game time. Everyone loves the trunk, it provides character and history to the room, and the youngest kids can play pirates and Harry Potter with it. It brings a little magic to our blanket storage.
We also have a hand-painted blanket chest at the bottom of the bed in one of the guest rooms. It’s beautiful, and a wonderful way to hide (the less beautiful) duffel bags and backpacks that are brought. A beautiful, memorable way to store things makes the whole cabin feel cleaner and prettier, which makes it easier for everyone to relax and enjoy themselves.
You can put these chests and trunks (oof- that sounds very anatomical) in your family rooms, great rooms, game rooms, kitchens, bedrooms, closets, wherever there is space and a storage need. Use them to store: puzzles, games, blankets, pillows, tablecloths and napkins, extra sweaters/mittens/hats/boots, family heirlooms, or anything else that can get be stacked. Additionally, this may also double as a bench or a coffee table.
