A-T-3 255 Gwen Guthrie - Seventh Heaven
Gwen Guthrie's second album Portrait is released in 1983. It was recorded at Compass Point in Nassau with the same all-stars as her debut, Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, Wally Badarou, Darryl Thompson, and Steven Stanley. As you'd expect from such a prolific songwriter and backing singer with a great supporting cast It's a terrific album
Larry Levan had remixed It Should Have Been You which was released as a single from her debut album. Levan was given the master tapes for Portrait and to Island Records horror spent too much expensive studio time to their liking remixing it, and this was when record companies had budgets to spend on lesser known artists. I remember watching the Brian Duffy documentary The Man Who Shot the 60s, Duffy produced the now iconic sleeve artwork for David Bowie's album Aladdin Sane, his advice to Bowie was spend as much of the record company's money as you can and then to recoup there investment they have to promote you. Promotion budgets are a big deal, you could have made they greatest album of all time but if nobody knows about it it's going to get buried. It helped that by Aladdin Sane had had his breakthrough and was already being seen as a major star, Gwen Guthrie wasn't that fortunate
Perhaps Larry Levan didn't spend enough of Island's money because his remixes sat on a shelf for two years and other than his remixes for Peanut Butter and Hopscotch the only place you could here Larry Levan's other remixes from these sessions was at the Paradise Garage played off reel-to-reel tapes. Paradise Garage was one of the most famous clubs on the planet and it was Larry Levan that made that happen. Gwen Guthrie became known as 'The First Lady Of The Paradise Garage' because of her live performances there and Levan playing his remixes of her records in his sets.
In 1985 Island release some of Levan's remixes as the mini-album Padlock (Special Mixes). The mini-album is credited to Levan with Gwen Guthrie demoted to featured performer alongside Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, Wally Badarou, and Darryl Thompson. We can extract from this decision that it was decided by the record company that Larry Levan was creating demand for these records to be put out and it was Levan' name that would get punters handing over their cash. Padlock sold much better than Portrait once it was released, Peanut Butter was reissued, Padlock was released as a single, as was Seventh Heaven (in the UK this came out around the time of Gwen's biggest success Aint Nothing Going On But The Rent in 1986, with Levan's remixes of Getting Hot and It Should Have Been You off Gwen's self-titled debut)
Going back to the issue of samples like I mentioned the other day Seventh Heaven, the Larry Levan remix, has been sampled in hip hop, rnb, and dance music over and over for tracks by the likes of Notorious B.I.G., Faith Evans, Busta Rhymes, Leaders Of The New School, Redman, Dilated Peoples, El-P, Public Enemy, Amil feat Beyoncé, Eric Sermon, Kenny Dope, Spinna, Tek 9, Dj Krust...

In "They Cloned Tyrone," director Darryl Thompson masterfully weaves a captivating tale that melds science fiction with a profound exploration of identity and self-discovery within the Black experience.
The casting is a triumph in itself. The chemistry between leading stars, including John Boyega as the charismatic yet enigmatic Fontaine aka Tyrone. Teyonah Parris as the quick-witted and resourceful Yo-Yo, and Jamie Fox as something like a pimp, Slick Charles ignites the screen.
Boyega's dual portrayal of the original Tyrone and his cloned counterpart showcases his range as an actor, adding layers of complexity to the narrative.
"They Cloned Tyrone" delves into the essence of Black identity, touching on themes of resilience and the search for authenticity.
The cinematography by Malik Sayeed captures the essence of each scene, from the pulsating neon lights of underground labs to the serene, contemplative moments in a forgotten city like Detroit, Milwaukee or Little Rock.
"They Cloned Tyrone" is a triumph not just for the sci-fi genre, but for Black cinema as a whole. With its thought-provoking narrative, exceptional cast, and visually arresting presentation, the film heralds a new wave of storytelling that celebrates the Black experience.

Jason William Mizell (January 21, 1965 – October 30, 2002) known by his stage name Jam Master Jay, was a musician and DJ. He was the DJ of the influential hip-hop group Run-DMC. During the 1980s, Run-DMC became one of the biggest hip-hop groups and is credited with breaking hip-hop into mainstream music. He was born in Brooklyn, the son of Jesse Mizell and Connie Thompson Mizell. He began playing the trumpet. He learned to play bass, guitar, and drums. He performed at his church and in various bands before discovering turntablism. At the age of 10, he discovered the turntables and started DJing at the age of 13. He was high school friends with Wendell "DJ Hurricane" Fite, known for his 13-year collaboration with The Beastie Boys. He lived in Atlantic City, where turntablism pioneer DJ Def Lou Hauck taught him to crossfade. After a year of DJing, he felt that he was good enough to play in front of people. Originally calling himself Jazzy Jase, he attended Andrew Jackson High School. He became a DJ because he "just wanted to be a part of the band". Before joining Run-D.M.C., he played bass and drums in several garage bands. He joined Joseph "Run" Simmons and Darryl "D.M.C." McDaniels just after they graduated from high school and agreed to DJ. On Run-D.M.C's album Raising Hell, he played keyboards, bass, and live drums in addition to his turntable work. He remained in his childhood neighborhood in Hollis his entire life. He established Jam Master Jay Records. The label is most known for signing 50 Cent and Onyx. Jam Master Jay Records folded after Jason Mizell was murdered. His legacy includes the Scratch DJ Academy in Manhattan. The academy was created to "provide unparalleled education and access to the art form of the DJ and producer." Jam Master Jay was related to the Mizell Brothers, a popular production team for Gary Bartz, Johnny "Hammond" Smith, and others. Jam Master Jay was the father of three sons: Jason Mizell Jr. (who performs as DJ Jam Master J'Son), Jesse Mizell, TJ Mizell (also a DJ), and a daughter, Tyra Myricks. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence https://www.instagram.com/p/CnrS-DJLggn/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Poltergeist TV Series: what to expect
Tumblr media
Amazon and MGM Studios are currently developing a new TV series based on the iconic horror film Poltergeist. The series is still in early stages, with no writer or release date confirmed yet.
Steven Spielberg's company Amblin Television, which produced the original 1982 film, will also produce the show. Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey will serve as executive producers.
The Poltergeist TV series will be set in the same world as the original film, but no plot details have been revealed so far. It's possible that cast members from the movie like Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams could reprise their roles as Steve and Diane Freeling.
In a recent update, writers Kalinda Vazquez (Star Trek: Discovery) and Robbie Thompson (Supernatural) have been tapped as showrunners for the series. This marks the latest attempt by Amazon to adapt well-known MGM properties since acquiring the studio.
The original Poltergeist film, co-written by Spielberg, was a major success upon its release in 1982. It spawned two sequels in the 1980s and a reboot in 2015. There was also a TV series called Poltergeist: The Legacy that aired in the late 1990s.
While the Amazon MGM Studios project is still in early development, the popularity of the Poltergeist franchise suggests the TV series will likely come to fruition in the near future. Fans of the original film will have to stay tuned for more updates on the show's progress and casting.

A-T-2 378 Gwen Guthrie
One of my favourites. Some of Gwen Guthrie's earliest writing credits were for pre-Chic Sister Sledge, including the magnificent Love Don't You Go Through No Changes On Me. She wrote hits for Ben E King, Roberta Flack, and Angela Bowfill. Gwen Guthrie was a sought after backing singer first though, she backed up some massive voices. I wouldn't put Madonna in the same category as Aretha Franklin or Stephanie Mills but in 1983 she is singing on Madonna's debut album. We're looking at 1982 though, the year Gwen Guthrie releases her solo debut
I'm guessing Gwen Guthrie met Sly & Robbie and other Compass Point members (All Stars) while recording vocals for Peter Tosh's 1981 effort Wanted Dread & Alive at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas. Gwen Guthrie's self-titled debut album uses pretty the same musicians. This had worked for Island Records and Grace Jones, her Compass Point albums Warm Leatherette, Nightclubbing, and Living My Life broke Grace Jones into the UK market and gained her much critical praise, as well as plenty of club hits. One of those was Pull Up To The Bumper which was popular with dj Larry Levan at the Paradise Garage. Levan never remixed Pull Up To The Pumper although there are a lot of files and even some compilations that will credit him to one of Steven Stanley's two remixes or Paul "Groucho" Smykle's 1985 remixed rerelease to promote the Island Life compilation. Steven Stanley engineered both Grace Jones and Gwen Guthrie's albums from this period, and he produced Guthrie's debut with Sly and Robbie. The confusion may come from Larry Levan providing an uncredited remix of Feel Up. Feel Up was the b side to Pull Up To The Bumper in the UK and Europe but the uncredited Larry Levan remix only appears on a US promo with Walking In The Rain on the b side. It's very clear Larry Levan remixed Gwen Guthrie though, a lot. The led to her being crowned the queen of Paradise Garage
Gwen Guthrie - It Should Have Been You (Larry Levan Mix) written by Darryl Thompson who played on the Tosh album
youtube
Gwen Guthrie - Peek-A-Boo ( Extented 12" Version)
youtube
There's also a 8.22 remix version of Peek-A-Boo that was released in the UK on the b side of the record below, both tracks were remixed but who knows who was involved, it was probably Sly & Robbie and Steven Stanley
Gwen Guthrie - For You (With A Melody Too) which is a great bit of modern soul. I'm sure it's been covered, losing my mind
youtube
Gwen Guthrie's track Getting Hot is also on this album and is remixed and put on the b side of the It Should Have Been You single, Levan's remix that finally appeared years later is so much better though
