The truth about the weird musicians might be that each of them has his or her own self-awareness about their very own positions and some actually used this to their own benefits. Serge Gainsbourg, for instance, continues to be seen as a weird one who had a plan. To be honest, the latter's major blueprint was a provocation, which, if you ask me, diluted the fact Gainsbourg was one of the most intriguing Western pop musicians. For instance, Aux Armes Et Cætera found him tackling reggae. However, we cannot accuse him of making a cod version of the style, he actually went to Jamaica and asked the most prominent players of the genre to collaborate with him. While this could be a recipe for a disaster, the whole thing just works so well you can only nod.

@nukeli Ok so “DEI” refers to Diversity Equity & Inclusion, a relatively new initiative that was designed to show off minorities, women, and people of color more.

Now on the surface, that’s not a bad thing, we’ve had plenty of diverse shows before like Diff’rent Strokes, Cyborg 009, Family Matters, Everybody Hates Chris, Kim Possible, My Life As A Teenage Robot, The Golden Girls, The Magic School Bus, and more.

This includes people behind the scenes like actors, writers and directors. Stuff we’ve had before too.

But the modern version of it, via DEI, has evolved into let’s just trash white people, and to quote the South Park line grifters use annoyingly as their rallying cry “Put a chick in it, make her lame & gay!”

So we’ve gotten stuff like Tee-La from He-Man being the stereotypical butch lesbian with a side shave haircut who just seems to hate everyone now and feels personally attacked, pushing Adam/He-Man aside to be the hero, and similarly Skeletor being pushed side in favor of making a similarly stereotyped butch lesbian Evil-Lyn the main villain. A big complaint among other things was how Tee-La was just incredibly unlikable and hard to root for, along with giving her and Evil-Lyn The Power in a manner that doesn’t make sense for their previously established characters in the 80’s and 2000’s cartoons. Thankfully the sequel show to MOTU: R corrected these problems, bringing Adam/He-Man & Tee-La on equal footing like they always were, and making Tee-La far more likable. Also Tee-La inheriting The Power from her mother The Sorceress, is used much better here and it makes more sense how she uses it here, vs the previous coddled, stereotype “I am woman hear me roar” direction they tried.

DEI has also poorly affected other things, like little people not getting jobs in the Snow White reboot movie to play the Dwarves, both because it was seen as offensive, and also Peter Dinklage running his mouth (somewhat justifiably in areas) and ruining it for everyone. Cleveland Brown in Family Guy being recast because his original voice actor was white being replaced with a black actor who impersonates the voice rather than doing his own thing with it, and DEI informing a new form of segregation, as only black actors can be black characters, whites can only be whites, Asians Asians, and etc in animation. Never mind popular black actors like Kevin Micheal Richardson and Phil LaMarr have done non black characters before with LaMarr famously being Samurai Jack, an Asian character. Some Asian actors who were for the casting changes realized too late it affected what they could do as it meant they can’t do anything other than Asian characters when they wanted to read for a non Asian human character. The point of voice acting is everyone can be anything like how many male characters are voiced by women like Tommy Pickles or Timmy Turner or how some female characters are voiced by men like Linda Belcher.

DEI also tends to over focus on how a show has only diverse actors and characters, and ergo EarthSpark’s marketing was going all in on how it had black characters, putting them as top billing over the Autobots on toy packaging. It also tended to favor its female cast, making the (non Megatron) men look incompetent. Like how GHOST is almost exclusively female, with the few male members being complete idiots. (To be fair, Schloder is supposed to be more of an Inspector Clouseau type but still.)

The more egregious instances to me is despite emphasizing kali, they don’t do anything with it that would make it look cool to all kids watching. Like Twitch using it to fight a Decepticon, outwitting him or her, using a skill she inherited from her adopted human father makes sense! As well as emphasizing the Terrans being Earth natives and learning its culture. Instead it’s just left hanging there, and I feel like someone internally said it’d be cultural appropriation if Twitch or Nightshade used it.

The production notes also intended Robbie to be the leader, something the second season went back to, but the first season emphasized Mo way more leaving Robbie little to do, to the point when he was practically dead, his parents instead showered Mo with affection for her problems when he was laying right next to them barely holding on.

Also Nightshade’s everything, causing the controversy that saw more casuals and parents reject the show hard. Nightshade is another example of DEI, over focusing on their being nonbinary as their sole character trait, despite their geeky, scientific side being just as important. The second season again corrects this, focusing entirely on their personality more and properly showing off their gift of science. It was too little too late though.

Really when you look back on it, the first season, despite its decent ideas, emphasized a lot of the DEI stuff casual audiences hate, with the second season going back to a traditional Autobots vs Decepticons conflict, and using more of the earlier ideas in the production bible. I still believe the more intriguing Megatron steals the Emberstone plot was repurposed into Starscream wanting it, because someone clearly didn’t want Megatron to relapse into being evil again.

This also feeds into another modern problem of not really having true villains anymore, and how due to DEI, most of the villains we get are only entitled white people to antagonize the people of color or female heroes (now we HAVE had this before off and on but not to this extent, and even then it was handled organically and made sense), vs stuff like the modern Invincible adult cartoon having a diverse villain cast like its comics did. A lot of modern stuff similarly tries to paint the Decepticons as being the true heroes despite the writing and the audience not supporting it. It’s why the Micheal Bay films are still popular because despite making the Autobots into more violent 80’s-90’s action heroes, they’re still defending the Earth and humanity from the monstrous Decepticons who intend to blow it up to obtain the trendy MacGuffin of the day. As for the cop/military stuff, one, it makes sense that the Autobots would ally themselves with the Earth military to help humans have a fighting chance, and two it’s not going away, because of the movies shifting to incorporating GI Joe as the human military force over NEST/Sector 7. Even Noah was ex military via RotB. The only bad cop was Barricade, a Decepticon, and any bad faith humans in military power were usually proven wrong for their hubris in thinking they didn’t need the Autobots.

Even TFONE has largely returned to a more simple black and white approach in having proper heroic characters in Orion’s miners turned Autobots, and properly evil villains in the Quints, Sentinel, Airachnid, and Starscream. Even D-16 makes sense as being evil again as he let his frustrations and anger at Sentinel, who he looked up to, consume him in a more believable way than Prime and Cyberverse making it look like he was just throwing a tantrum for 4 million years because Optimus got what he wanted: control.

So ultimately diversity is still a good thing, but the modern approach to it by embittered people who thought they knew better has instead pushed us back a few decades when things were largely ok in terms of diversity and making natural strides in improving.

Family Matters and Static Shock were among my favorite shows growing up, but now, because of current trends, I can’t look at characters like Liko from HZ or Hazel from New Wish without thinking they were the result of DEI and not an organic desire of trying out something else. And that’s not at all how it should be thought of.

@fanficrocks Temporary Accommodation is a casefic that takes place after Down Among the Fearful but goes AU before The Ramblin' Boy. It's basically my attempt to write a mystery plot as complicated as an episode with multiple plausible suspects. So there's a case, and also James' flat gets flooded which results in him reluctantly staying with Robbie. Meanwhile, James is not really okay after the events of DAtF but trying to hide it from Robbie, and Robbie, of course, can tell something is up with James.

Here's a snippet of Robbie convincing James to stay with him:

James looks down at the papers on his desk, shuffling them around again unnecessarily. “It will be more than a couple of days. They said a week at minimum.” “And you’ve already spent two nights in the Travelodge, so that makes it five days.” “Sir, I can’t—”  “Of course you can. You’re telling me you like it there?” James looks at Robbie like he’s posed an impossible question, as if the choice between Robbie’s flat and the Travelodge is a choice between the frying pan and the fire.  “I don’t want to put you out, sir.” “You won’t be.” “I’m afraid I’m not very good at sharing space. The Travelodge is fine.” “You seemed to do all right those nights in the old flat when we got takeaway and had a few too many and you kipped on the sofa.” Come to think of it, in the two months since he’s moved that hasn’t happened once, James has either begged off altogether or cut the evening short with some flimsy excuse or other. A shame when part of the reason Robbie went for the two bedroom flat in the first place was to save James having to sleep on his too short sofa. James shakes his head almost reluctantly. “That’s not the same. Besides, the spare room is for Lyn—” “When she visits,” Robbie says. “Which she isn’t right now.” The lad can’t be half frustrating at times. He’ll offer up his entire weekend to help Robbie move and yet won’t accept a simple offer of help himself. “If my flat was unlivable and you had a spare room would you put me up?” “Of course I would,” James says immediately, then clamps his mouth shut. He looks caught out. “That’s sorted then,” Robbie says. James looks like he’s about to protest again, but his admission counts as accepting the offer as far as Robbie’s concerned and he’s not letting James rationalise his way out of it.

Cardinal Points - fanfic finally completed!

Chapter 4: Epilogue - The said and the unsaid.

Robbie settled down at the table overlooking the river and watched James get in the pints. Unusually for him, the lad had a light lager rather than the dark ale they both typically favoured. Seating himself, James raised his glass in a toast.

“To your travels.”

“Haven’t gone yet.”

“It’s alright. You can admit it.”

“Admit what?”

“That you are going to miss me very, very, very much.”

“As if!.......... You made up with your sister yet?”

“The peace process has begun. We are spending the weekend at a retreat in Ilchester Abbey.”

“A retreat? To get in her good books? What if she doesn’t like it? She’ll do her nut.”

“No, she won’t. It is a silent one.”

Shaking his head at the facetious sod, Robbie took a sip of his ale and let his eyes rest on the gently lapping water as the peace of the long summer afternoon sank in. They had just cleared their latest case, and Moody seemed to have gotten off James’ back - at least to the extent of accepting that the younger man would do just fine in Robbie’s absence. Smiling at the thought, Robbie let his gaze wander back, only to see the subject of his mental soliloquy frowning intently in a way that presaged some loaded revelation.

“How do you do it?”

“Do what?”

“Forgive me no matter what I throw at you? And accept me regardless. Don’t pretend like you don’t understand… I ran away without a word, then did my best to freeze you out upon my return. And I was an absolute beast on and off when Innocent brought you back as consultant. To add insult to injury, I had told you nothing about my family; yet ever since you learnt of their existence, you have done your best to help me connect with them, to make peace and to understand. Why?”

Robbie listened to the sudden rush of words and realised just how hard it must have been for James to come to the sticking point and say all this out loud. And while he knew the answer in his heart, it would not do to respond too quickly, lest James assume his answer was glib rather than heartfelt. As with everything else, he had to let James find his own way to the right conclusion.

“How long have we known each-other, James? Going on 9 years now, I reckon?”

“Yeah…”

“And in all that time, I can count my true intimates on the fingers of one hand - Lyn, Mark, Laura, yourself. My family, some by birth and some I found. My four cardinal points…. Why would I not care and do my best to smooth your way when I can?”

“Well, Laura is the second great love of your life. And Lyn and Mark are your children. So all that makes sense. But where do I fit?”

“Best mate, much younger brother, surrogate son or nephew. Take your pick. And whatever you choose, I hope you realise that you have a right to my attention and care, and to tell me off when needed, just as much as the rest of my family do. And that you will at some point find yourself able to ask me for whatever you need… or want from me.”

They both fell silent then for a little while, before James shook his head, as though faced with something he could not really believe. Robbie looked across at him, wondering just what it would take to convince that doubting bugger.

“We don’t need to label the relationship, daft lad. It just is. As you seemed to realise in the hospital last year.”

“I realised it? In the hospital? But I…”

“Oh, I am not talking about the afternoon just before I was discharged when you stopped in for what - 3 minutes - before you rushed away citing work. And spent most of that time hiding behind the unlikely spectacle of Innocent rocking Andy. No, I mean what you said that night when you stole in on your own… that I love you in my own way.”

“I said that, yes. But, but you…”

“But I was unconscious and barely alive? Yeah. Could still see and hear though, even if I don’t know with what senses exactly.”

“You mean you had an out-of-body experience when you were so near death?”

“I don’t have your way with words or your book-learning, lad. All I know is that something - call it my mind or my spirit or whatever you wish - was hovering in that hospital room, watching and listening to all of you. 

And when the summons came for me to decide whether to stay and fight back to life, or to just let go… well, the first time, I couldn’t make a decision - for there was a void where my fourth cardinal point should have been. Later, after you had spoken to me, it just reiterated everything I had gathered from the kids and from Laura. Even from Jean. That it was not my time yet, that too many people cared, and that I should not give up.”

“That is… remarkable. That you remember so vividly. And there was no way any of the medical staff could have told you I had been there - I chose my moment carefully when the only one around was a nurse on her last day of duty at the JR before she moved overseas.”

“Hmmm. Trust you to always take the hard way. And I am sorry, lad. I tried so very hard to respond to you in some way, particularly when I felt your tears and the tremble of your lips against my wrist. But I just couldn’t… the will was there but the flesh would not cooperate.”

James went scarlet at this, and for a moment, Robbie was afraid that he had gone too far and embarrassed his awkward sod past reclaim - perhaps driven him away for all time. 

But after a long draught of his lager, James looked up and met his eyes, all screens gone for once. He did not speak, but then Robbie did not expect him to… after all, their most weighty and poignant exchanges were often unspoken. And James’ brimming eyes and shy smile, so different from the wry and sarcastic grin he usually affected, said more than the finest speech could as he raised his glass to Robbie once more.

This fic gives Gurdip such a strong voice of his own, and his thoughtful observations add so much poignancy to each small moment between the other two.

James had never liked Peterson, just like most colleagues who knew Lewis for what he was – clever, hardworking, friendly – as opposed to what people like said Peterson assumed he was – stuck in his ways, old-fashioned and not particularly bright. They all saw the slight derogatory manner with which he treated Lewis (who, for his part, couldn’t have cared less – “One of those career men who form their little clubs and see that they get as high up as possible seen it all before well I won’t stand in his way”) and flet that it was impolite as unfair, and so had their problems with the pet of the higher-ups.

But even so, he would never have predicted this.

Tempering with evidence to help one of his pals cover up a screw up.

Everyone knew what that meant. If this came out, then his career would be ruined – he’d be lucky if he were not put in front of a judge together with his friend.

And come out it must, naturally. They could not allow a few bad apples to spoil the barrel, he knew that even as he and Lewis stared down at the evidence.

Apart from the fact that this was Robbie Lewis, and that naturally, he would do whatever he could to make this right, no matter what.

But even so –

“What if we’re wrong?” he couldn’t help but ask. Yes, the possibility was rather small, but it could always be that someone was trying to frame Peterson; but by the time that could be proven, Peterson would already have been under official suspicion and have had to deal with everything that meant, which in turn would probably have very unpleasant consequences for Lewis and James himself.

Lewis, it seemed, had already come to the same conclusion, for he simply replied “In that case our careers would be ruined, which is why you are going to sit this one out. I’m old and won’t be promoted anymore, but you’ve got it all in front of you.”

James blinked. Did he really expect him –

“So you’ve never seen this” Lewis said firmly, gathering the file and locking it up in his desk. “I’ll go to Innocent and see what happens.”

“That’s not going to happen”. He hadn’t really thought about what he was going to say before he opened his mouth, but even if he had, it would have been something very similar.

It was Lewis’ turn to blink. “What?”

“I said, that’s not going to happen. I am coming with you.”

“Lad –“

“Sir, I am not letting you put everything you have in jeopardy because –“

“I told you, I’m old and as good as done anyway – Lyn’s been after me to retire for a while now –“

That was news to James, who immediately felt as panicked as back when Lewis had first learned he was going to be a grandfather. He had been aware that Lyn and Lewis had been talking on the phone quite a lot in the past few months – had even been glad for it, since Lewis had been somewhat apprehensive that he was losing out on his grandson’s milestones – but he hadn’t thought that…”

“And really, better to go out with a bang than with a whimper” Lewis added, and there was something in his expression that James had come to associate with him remembering the still-famous DCI Morse.

He didn’t ask, knowing from experience that if Lewis wanted to explain, he would. Today he didn’t.

“So? And why am I not allowed to go down in a blaze of glory, then?”

“I said, you’re –“

“Yes, I’ve heard you both times, but I also meant what I said that other time, sir – if you go, I go. There’s no point of me staying if they force you out.”

Lewis looked like he was more than ready for the old argument to repeat itself once more (he occasionally tried to logic James into agreeing to staying, not that it had been successful so far, nor ever would) but he didn’t allow him to do so, this time around, instead adding, “And I just can’t stay behind and watch from the sidelines, not in a case like this. You know I can’t.”

He studied him, then sighed as his shoulders slumped and James knew he had won. “No, I know you can’t, and what’s worse – I also know if I don’t take you with, you’ll find ways to strike out on your own. I’d rather be able to keep an eye on you while we try to wreck our higher-up’s favourite’s career.”

He nodded because it was enough that he had carried his point.

Lewis looked at him once more and raised an eyebrow. “So, when do you want to ruin Innocent’s entire week?”
