All Night Libraries
Could be so cool to have all night sensory friendly libraries, with nice warm soft lighting, and cute comfy whimsical furniture, art and plants. Where people could just go and read all night, hang with friends and even sleep there in the available rest spaces like hammocks or a little capsule hotel in the library. Very lunarpunk. Would call mine the Moonlight Library

GUYS GUESS WHAT
I took my friend (who doesn't get out much and needs to have a quiet retreat space) to the library today.
I FORGOT HOW RAD THE LIBRARY IS.
-My library has private rooms with locking doors that you check out with your library card and then have keycard access to.
-These rooms are made of plexiglass for Obvious Reasons, but still. Rooms.
-I checked out a Lounge space and, guys, it's a balcony.
-It's over the main entrance to the library so you can see everyone coming in and out. The door locks so it's private, but it's also open air to the tall ceilings and has SO MUCH natural light.
-literally so much natural light the one exterior wall is floor-to-ceiling windows with a view over a fountain and a courtyard and the local shopping district. the sunset was rad.
-My laptop connected directly to the WiFi.
-There were so many people there! There are chairs spread throughout and a bunch of computers and people just chilled and hung out!
-My friend was thrilled to be able to navigate a quiet space with strangers who didn't speak to her, and then to have a retreat space.
-My library also has a Makerspace (!!!) and a Cricut machine (!!!) and I can email someone and get trained in how to use it!
-Someone was in the recording booth and I couldn't tell what she was reading but it sounded cool.
-There's a whole room along the side of the upstairs that's just for teens. Like literally just. The sign says that if you're not a teenager you should see the staff for other rooms. There wasn't anyone there when I stuck my head in but there's a giant whiteboard and orb-style chairs and
-sorry I forgot to mention that my balcony has not only a couch but also several big comfy chairs (like, I can sit on my chair and put my feet on it too and balance my book on my knees and it's STILL not too small of a chair) and a couple coffee tables and a corner where the sunlight isn't direct y'all it's so nice
-I'm so glad my tax dollars went to this, guys. We're stuck on campus for Thanksgiving break and we desperately needed to go somewhere that didn't cost money.
-for as much as I get on about the necessity of Third Spaces, you think I'd remember this.
-I also found out my friend likes Agatha Christie novels. She read me a section while I washed dishes tonight, and I think I'm gonna like them too.

Percy makes so much sense as an afrolatino character i genuinely don't understand how it wasn't intentional. He's a New Yorker from El Barrio,a mama's boy who respects women and disrespects men, poor and has a deadbeat dad but characterized in ways to defy stereotypes as the purpose of his creation and deals with realistic guilt of falling under stereotypes to begin with, was a bully beater that refused to stop standing up for himself and other kids to the point he got kicked out of 6 schools by the time was only 12 and authority figures picked on him too,has gotten straightup profield in the mortal world his entire life because 'he looks scary' and 'his vibes are naturally off to normies',is a hardcore cocky ahh asshole yet also a softie with zero self-eestem in that way so many black men are,his dad is Poseidon but his mom raised him in the ways of the sea because she's loved it her whole life and her parents' past isn't expanded on so they could easily be inmigrants,he's punk but in mentality and lifestyle and tastes and dosen't care about being just an aesthetic poser and roasts other guys for machoism, used 'rich white boys' as an insult in the second book, his hair is pure black and the texture isn't specified but it being longer than average for a dude's IS and his skin gets specified too as mediterrean i.e brown skin and we're not given his exact shade,he's a genius and has been saving everybody's asses for 11+ books but gets treated like a well-intentioned idiot by everyone for no reason,Hazel aka the first darkskin black fem mc of the series who's also from 1940s New Orleans described him as having 'the good looks of a roman god' and Percy was instantly riding harder for her than anybody else did including her nonblack 'boyfriend' and nurtures her in a dad-like fashion which brings to mind the fact that Hazel's BIODAD is a roman god but didn't get the reaction on his apperance from her Percy did,his foil is Luke aka a fascist to his anarchist and a paragon of cishet physically abled allistic white male privilege and violence and self-victimization and he said Sadie who is CANONICALLY a black dad white mom kid who's light but not white passing since her racist classmates could tell she's black biracial by just looking at her looks like if he had a daughter. And his name is literally Percy Jackson. How much blacker can a character get like fym Percy's not short for Perseo and that he dosen't have eyebrow, spider bite, tongue ring and forward helix on both ears piercings and Sally dosen't have an afro and wear head scarves and make him blue soul food and blueberry flan,he's literally a hood nigga and an afropunk

☆ Monday morning writing sessions ☆
This summer ended up being very different from the field work research on water pollution & bioremediation that I originally intended to conduct. Being chronically ill has presented additional hurdles in my PhD journey that were unexpected, but not necessarily unwelcome. An unintended positive to come out of all these diagnoses is the prioritization of "slow living" and a better work/life balance.
I've lived so much of my life masking my chronic pain and neurodivergence so giving myself permission to slow down is scary, but I know it will ultimately result in better work and a healthier lifestyle.
So instead of traveling and collecting samples, and attending community meetings -- I ended up writing my first manuscript for publication and became the project lead for a sustainable solarpunk data center proposal that got funded through one of the University's top climate action programs.
Grad school has been so much more about being flexible and adaptable than it is about memorization or traditional "studying" -- at least for me, it's been more about juggling expectations versus realities while learning how to advocate for the problems I want to solve with my research.
Water is central. Water is life.

The thing about TTRPGs (and Solarpunk)
Tumblr media
There is one thing in terms of Tabletop RPGs, that within the TTRPG development scene is a well-known issue. A lot of folks, who are playing TTRPGs come from the big games in this regard. Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, World of Darkness, Shadowrun, GURPS and maybe FATE. And while FATE is a bit lighter on this issue, it is still there. And that issue? Those games are all about combat.
Don't get me wrong. This is not an issue per se. If you want to play a combat game, all power to you. It can be fun to just go around and kill things in a fantasy world. Duh.
But the thing is, that for the most part the rulebooks for these things tend to be 50% combat rules, with the rules for everything else being often comparatively light weight.
Here comes the issue: If you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
Which means for TTRPGs: If you have a rulebook based around combat, your instincts when it comes to solving a problem within the game tends to be "punch it until it stops moving". Which is why a lot of games played, they will spend a considerable amount of time fighting things.
Again: If you like to play combat games, that is great. But for everyone who wants to try anything else... that is an issue.
Of course, for individual games this can be solved with a good old Session 0 and in some cases a heavy helping of house rules, if whatever you want to play is not properly covered by the rules... But it tends to not be the default.
And this brings me to the Indie TTRPG scene. Because this issue tends to push into the Indie scene as well. Especially new IndieDevs tend to make detailed combat rules, even if they do not want to make a combat-heavy game, because they have the feeling of "this is a TTRPG, this needs combat!"
But here is the thing: It doesn't, of course. You can make TTRPGs based around all sorts of mechanics.
Which brings me back to Solarpunk - as mentioned in the title. I have now seen several Solarpunk TTRPG rules. And a ton of them featured a plethora of combat rules, even though they do not even properly feature any scenarios that would require combat in their worldbuilding and what not.
Admittedly, I am still struggling with this myself. I am currently working on two mini-RPGs with Solarpunk settings. And I always need to fight the need to make up combat rules.
And I really think we need to think about the kinda stories we can tell with TTRPGs and how to make games, that are not about combat.
What kinda TTRPGs would you like to see?
