I just saw the covers and rarities for the last of us part II was up on spotify and now I'm in the feels again. I hit play before I could even process that I had done so. It is a good thing I had nothing important to accomplish today cause it wouldn't happen now.
I hope you are doing well, I'm going to go back to crying mostly happy tears that I can now listen to Ashley's version of Take on Me anytime I want
oh mate, it must have been a total suckerpunch not being prepared for those feels to suddenly rush back đ
i haven't sought it out on spotify yet, i definitely need to brace myself first
#asks#darienplays6688#i was thinking about playing again over the weekend for outbreak day#but i'm far too occupied with finishing deathloop and that was completely unexpected đ
#also death stranding director's cut is here so that's also going to take the next 200 hours of my life again ha

Are you and your wife looking forward to the colder holiday weather we are supposed to be getting? I know I am.
Also I hope you both are staying safe in this storm that's bringing it along. The wind sounded so loud a bit ago that I thought the wall in my room was going to cave in. Luckily so far we have just had a few limbs come down and no damage to the house.
I am, but wifey is not đ Itâs not too bad where we are! Just some rain and a little bit of wind. Hope youâre doing well, friend!

Did you at one time have a WayHaught fic about Ward promising Waverly to a revenant and the gang trying to break it by faking that Waverly and Nicole were to be married? Someone was asking about it over on wayhaughtficrec's blog and I thought it was you but apologies if I'm way off on this.
you know whatâs crazy? I actually saw that ask earlier today and I was like hey fic sounds familiar. turns out yeah itâs mine, I'm gonna repost it

Ok 3 and 28 is so soft and already so wayhaught but I think I am going to request 24, please.
03. forehead kisses28. forehead touches or nose nudging or any soft variation on the theme24.  âjust really needed a hugâ sort of a hug13. family
@darienplays6688, I wasnât sure if you were asking for #24 instead of #3 and #28, or if you wanted that in addition to both of them. SoâŚÂ I went ahead and included a little bit of those for you, too. Just in case.
âââ-
Okay, soâŚÂ Hereâs the thing. I know these were all supposed to be âSuper Soft And Fluffyâ prompts, butâŚÂ I think my brain overloaded on all of the fluff that wrote during the last three or four of these prompt fills. If I didnât let out some of this bottled up angst, Iâm pretty sure I was going to explode.
So, likeâŚÂ Thatâs not to say that this doesnât have some really soft moments in it (and a happy ending, of course), but thereâs definitely some angsty stuff along the way, and itâs not what I would call âfluffyâ by any stretch of the imagination.
Iâm really sorry, guys. But I just couldnât do it. I hope you can still find a way to enjoy this fic that youâre getting instead. : /
âââ-
Set just a day or two after the end of 3x07, but before it picks up with any of the events of 3x08. Â
Also, the scenes are not in chronological order. It starts in the present, and then alternates between flashbacks and then back to the present again. Should hopefully be pretty easy to follow, but just wanted to give you a headâs up.
âââ-
âHey, Babygirl. Â IÂ think you might need to come down here.â
âWhatâs wrong?  Is it Nicole? Is she hurt?â
âNo, sheâs okay.  Sheâs just, uh⌠ really quiet and kind of spacing out.  If I didnât know any better, Iâd think she was stoned.  But this is Nicole âI have a lawbook shoved up my assâ Haught weâre talking about here, soâŚâ
âWynonna.â
âYeah.  Anyway.  I think maybe the stuff from today just kind of got to her a little.â
âOh, god.  The little girl.  Was sheâŚ?â
âNo! Â No. Â The kidâs fine. Â Haught was a goddamn superhero today. Â But donât you fucking dare ever tell her IÂ said that.â
âWhere are you guys?  Iâm packing up now.â
âYou can meet us at the Shelterlands Forest Trailhead.â
âThatâs where you guys are?  Fudgenuggets.  No wonder Nicole is spooked.  Iâll be there in like thirty minutes.â
âHalf an hour?!â
âIâm at the library, Wynonna.  Unless one of you has figured out how to teleport yet, then it will take me thirty minutes to get all the way out there.â
âWhat the fuck am I supposed to do with your ginger poptart until then?  I think sheâs slightly burnt right now instead of lightly toasted.â
âI donât know, Wynonna⌠ Maybe try talking to her?â
âCome on, Waves.  You know Iâm fucked when it comes to all of that soft and gooey feelings bullshit.â
âThatâs not entirely true.â
âJust⌠hurry.  You gotta fix your girlfriend before I end up breaking her even worse.â
//
âYou sure youâre okay, Waves?â
âIâm fine, Wynonna,â Waverly answers, shoving notebooks and tomes into her bag.  âThereâs nothing going on today.  Iâm just gonna do a deep-dive into some of this research.  Iâm tired of us always being two steps behind on everything.â
Wynonna understands the frustration.  Theyâve been behind the 8-ball on this thing from the very beginning, dating all the way back to Wyatt himself. Â
But she knows thereâs more to Waverlyâs mood, and it has everything to do with Mama skipping town again a couple of days ago.  At least sheâd left a letter this time, but that had done little to quell Waverlyâs heartbreak.  She doesnât think Waverly had been completely caught off guard by the disappearance â it was less surprise, and more disappointed resignation â but that doesnât mean sheâs hurting any less.
Wynonna wishes there was more she could do to console Waverly, but to be completely honest, she still hasnât quite recovered from the sting of it herself.  And thatâs not counting the fact that sheâd discovered Docâs betrayal not five minutes after reading the warning Mama had left her.
Welcome to the shitshow, population: me.
âIf youâre gonna do research all day, why are you packing everything up?â Wynonna eventually asks, worried about what Waverly might really be planning.  Sheâs not sure she has the energy, nor the mental capacity, to save her sister from some half-cocked mission sheâs concocted to prove something to herself and everyone else in this godforsaken town.
âIâm just going to the library,â Waverly snaps, rolling her eyes.  âDidnât realize I needed your permission.â
âWhoa, now,â Wynonna says, dropping her feet from the table theyâve been propped up on.  âCalm your tits there, girlie.  I was just wondering why you arenât going to use the BBD office since everything is already here.â
âSorry,â Waverly sighs heavily, her shoulders sagging as she drops into the nearest chair.  âItâs just⌠ Jeremyâs doing one of his experiments and heâs gonna be back any minute and I just donât think I have it in me today to listen to him ramble all day.â  Shame causes her head to hang low, and she picks absentmindedly at one of the pockets on her bag.  âNicoleâs gonna be out on patrols all day to try and get her visibility up right before the election, so I canât even use the desk in her office, and I just⌠ I just want to be alone with my books for a while.  My mind needs some peace and quiet,â she mumbles at the end with a half-hearted shrug.
Wynonna hesitates for a minute before finally biting the bullet and reaching out to place her hand over Waverlyâs on the table between them.
âWhatever you need, Babygirl,â she says quietly, giving it a gentle squeeze.  âIâm here if you need anything.â
âI know,â Waverly says, eventually meeting Wynonnaâs eye, but Wynonna can tell by the tremor in her voice that she doesnât know.  That Mamaâs selfishness has proven to be a crippling setback for Waverly, erasing the year and a half of progress that Wynonna and Nicole have been making toward helping Waverly believe theyâll never leave her.
Her baby sister may as well be at the bottom of the well that Bobo recently vacated, for all the good the past couple of months have done toward her abandonment issues.
Wynonna continues to hold Waverlyâs gaze for a few more seconds, saddened by the doubt she finds there.  Squeezing her hand one last time, she finally leans over the table and kisses Waverlyâs forehead.  She could kill Mama for what sheâs done to Waverly again, and she could kill Doc for being complicit in her getaway.
She grits her teeth as she pulls back and stands from her chair.
Thatâs a problem for another day.
âSo, you said Tater Haughtâs gonna be on patrol all day?â Wynonna asks as casually as she can.
âYesâŚâ  Waverly looks Wynonna up and down.  âWhyâŚ?â
Wynonna shrugs, playing with the fringe on her leather jacket.
âThought maybe sheâd like some company.â
âYou are volunteering to ride around on patrol with Nicole?â  Waverly hesitates, narrowing her eyes suspiciously.  âWhat are you really up toâŚ?â
âNothing,â Wynonna huffs.  âIâm just bored.  The Revs are quiet.  We have no new leads on Ball-Shart.  Youâre off to find your Fortress of Solitude, and that leaves me with Opti-mug Prime over there.â
And Waverly may be looking for some peace and quiet, but the last thing Wynonna wants right now is to be alone with her thoughts.  Thereâs also that.
âYou know what the Fortress of Solitude is?â Waverly asks and Wynonna immediately winces.  âWow, you really have been spending too much time with Jeremy.â
Waverly giggles, and despite Wynonnaâs mortification, sheâs glad to see the small spark of joy in her sisterâs eyes, no matter how fleeting.
âRight?â Wynonna gasps, feigning disgust.  âIâd much rather drive around with Haught Sauce and heckle the townsfolk than have to learn one more thing about a comic book character today.â  She spins Peacemaker around her finger ominously, surprising even herself when she doesnât fuck it up this time like she usually does.
âI doubt Nicole will let you get away with much heckling.â  She watches Wynonna fumble with Peacemaker for a minute and then drops her hands to her hips.  âAlthoughâŚâ she starts, her head cocking slightly.  âMaybe a little âquality timeâ would do you some good.  Might even be better than the get-along-shirt I ought to make you two idiots wear after all of the trouble you caused the other day.â
Wynonna opens her mouth to launch some snarky retort, but Waverly holds a hand up to stop her and Wynonnaâs mouth snaps shut on its own before she even realizes it.
âIâve already heard every excuse under the sun from both of you.  Iâm not in the mood for reruns.â  Wynonna grumbles and shoves Peacemaker back in her holster, but refrains from arguing.  âGood.  Iâll text Nicole to pick you up out front.â
With that, she finishes gathering up her things and breezes past Wynonna, pausing in the doorway only long enough to tell her to have a good time and to behave.
Wynonna stands alone in the BBD office, silently wondering when she became the child to Waverlyâs mom friend instincts, but then she hears Jeremyâs cheerful chattering coming down the hall and she decides to hightail it before she gets cornered by another one of his science-fiction lectures.
Grabbing a donut from the box Waverly had left on the table earlier, she stuffs the entire thing in her mouth in one go and rushes out of the station.
Still brushing the litany of crumbs away from her shirt and jacket while standing on the front sidewalk, she doesnât notice the cruiser pull up to the curb.  When Nicole chirps the siren right behind her, Wynonna trips over her own feet, nearly doing a header right off the sidewalk and into the street.
She can hear Nicoleâs laughter, even through the rolled-up windows of her patrol car.  She flips Nicole off as she stumbles closer to the car, so Nicole proceeds to chirp the siren at her again.
âFuck you, Haught!â Wynonna curses through her remaining mouthful of donut as she wrenches open the passenger door, drawing a smug sort of satisfaction from the appalled look on Nicoleâs face when even more crumbs come flying out of her mouth to litter the front seat.
âGross, Earp!â Nicole scolds, immediately scooping the crumbs into her hand and depositing them in the little trash compartment she keeps in her center console.
Wynonna completely ignores her, propping her feet up on the dash.
âLetâs roll, Haughtie.â
//
âMaybe try talking to her,â Wynonna mocks under her breath when Waverly ends the call.
Wynonna slips her phone back in her pocket and glances over at Nicole. Â
She hasnât moved a muscle in at least five minutes, just staring blankly into the open trunk of her patrol car while the climbing harness still hangs from her hips. Wynonna may not always be the most observant person, but sheâs not as oblivious as she likes to let everyone think she is.  She can see the way Nicoleâs entire body is trembling, the carabiners on her rigging jangling softly with the constant movement.
âMaybe try talking to her,â Wynonna mumbles again, kicking a rock and watching it skid off in the opposite direction.  âWhat the fuck do I know about this kind of trauma,â she grumbles as she finally takes a step in Nicoleâs direction.
A lot more than you might think.
Wynonna rolls her eyes at herself as she approaches Nicole. Â
Okay, thatâs a fair point.
She hesitates briefly when Nicole doesnât seem to notice her, then reaches out to lay a cautious hand on her shoulder.  Nicole jumps and spins to face her, hand immediately falling to her sidearm, ready to draw if necessary.  Wynonna stumbles back a step, eyes wide.  She knew Nicole was a little zoned out, butshe wasnât expecting that.
âJesus, Wynonna,â Nicole croaks, trying to catch her breath.  âI could have shot you.â
âYou could have tried,â Wynonna returns, patting Peacemaker at her hip with a wink, opting for an off-color attempt at humor as she so often does in these situations.  It doesnât land, of course, and Nicole just continues to stare at her blankly.  âOkay, okay.  Geez.  Sorry.  I didnât mean to startle you like that.â
âSorry,â Nicole says, her shoulders sagging a bit.  âI was justâŚÂ  justâŚâ  She looks back into the trunk of her cruiser, then down at the climbing gear still dangling from her waist, then back up at Wynonna with a frown.  âFuck,â she sighs.  âI donât even know what I was doing.  Sorry,â she mumbles again.
Wynonna wonders again how the person with the worst interpersonal skills ended up in this position.
Dolls.  Dolls was always good at calming me down when I was freaking the fuck out.  What would he do to help Nicole right now?
âTake a deep breath, Haughtstuff,â she tries, awkwardly patting her on the shoulder again.  âLetâs start by getting you out of that harness.â
Nicole looks down at it again, but makes no move to start unbuckling it, her hands still hanging uselessly at her sides.
âThatâs what she saidâŚÂ  HA!â  Wynonna holds out her hand for a high five, proud of her joke, but still gets no reaction, even after high-fiving herself.
Fuck. Â That was a terrible Dolls. Â Focus, Earp.
âSnap out of it, Haught,â Wynonna says more firmly, reaching out to place her hands on both of Nicoleâs shoulders this time, looking her square in the eye.  âYou were a hero today.â  She immediately winces.  âDammit⌠ You werenât supposed to hear me say that part,â she mutters, but straightens her back and raises her chin anyway.  âA goddamn hero.â
Much better. Â Very Dolls-like.
âNow I know I must be losing it,â Nicole finally says, the corner of her mouth twitching slightly as she shakes her head.
âHa, ha.  Very funny,â Wynonna says dryly and punches Nicole in the arm, snorting when she grabs it and whines dramatically.  âSeriously, though,â she continues, gesturing back at Nicoleâs gear.  âFinish taking that off so we can relax for a minute, Haughtpants.â
âYeahâŚâ  Nicole turns back toward the trunk, staring into it again for a few more seconds before finally starting to unbuckle the harness.  âYeah, I should do that.â
Wynonna leans against the back bumper, watching Nicole step out of the harness and begin to pack away the rest of her climbing gear.  She nods to herself, and for the briefest of moments, she could swear she sees Dolls smiling at her from over Nicoleâs shoulder.  But when she blinks, heâs gone again, and all thatâs left is a strange whisper on the wind.
Proud of you, Earp.
//
âSo this is what you do all day? Â Just drive around town and jiggle a bunch ofdoor handles?â Â
Nicole completely ignores Wynonna, not even taking her eyes off the road long enough to glance in her direction.
âBecause I can think of some things that are a lot more fun to jiggle,â Wynonna says with a wicked smirk, leaning far enough over the console to nudge Nicole in the ribs.  âWe could always go and visit Pussy Willows again, like we did that one time.  Maybe one of the girls could pull that rod out of your ass for you.â
Nicoleâs hands tighten around the steering wheel, and Wynonna can see the muscles flexing in her jaw.  She immediately wishes she could kick herself.
âFuck. Â Sorry. Â I didnât mean toââ
âItâs fine,â Nicole cuts her off, voice tight.
The massacre.
The massacre that had brought the Cult of Bulshar to the forefront of their investigation.
The massacre that dredged up traumatic memories Nicole had locked away for twenty years.
The massacre that, according to Waverly, had conjured nightmares that haunted Nicole nearly every night since.
That massacre.
Wynonna doesnât even think Pussy Willows has re-opened in the two and a half months since it happened.  But here she had gone and dragged it all up again, just for a cheap laugh.
God, Iâm such a fuckhead sometimes.  Looks like Docâs assholery is contagious.
Doc. Â
Thereâs another subject she doesnât want to touch with a ten-foot pole.  Sheâs batting a thousand today, it would seem.  Desperate for any change of subject she can come up with, Wynonna backtracks to the last relatively safe thing she said.
âSo these door checksâŚâ Wynonna mumbles, plucking nervously at a string that hangs from the frayed hole in the knee of her jeans.  âYou have to do the same ones over and over again?â
âItâs important work, Wynonna,â Nicole says defensively. Â
Wynonna recognizes the look on her face as the one she makes when sheâs preparing herself to be made fun of.  A pang of guilt stabs at Wynonnaâs gut when she realizes just how often she must badmouth Nicole and the way she does her job.  Itâs not fair and she knows it, but sometimes she just canât help herself.  Itâs like a compulsion. Â
âI know,â Wynonna agrees, still trying to smooth things over.
âYou do?â  Nicole obviously wasnât expecting that kind of response.  Wynonna glances up to find Nicole looking at her while theyâre stopped at a stop sign, eyebrow raised as though sheâs expecting there to be more to it than that.
âI mean⌠ I think I know,â Wynonna falters.  She frowns as she continues to pick at the string on her jeans.  âOkay, actually I donât know,â she finally admits.  Nicoleâs face falls, resigning herself to whatever jab is about to come next.  âButyou could explain it to me,â Wynonna continues.  âOr whatever,â she adds at the end with a wave of her hand, still trying to play it cool like she always does.
Nicole is silent for a long moment, and Wynonna considers just climbing out of the car while itâs not moving and starting the long walk back to the station by herself.  Surely she canât fuck that up as much as sheâs fucking this up right now.
âYouâre really asking?â Nicole finally ventures, and the skepticism is etched deeply on her face, but Wynonna thinks she catches a glimpse of something else in her eyes.
âNevermind,â Wynonna sighs, deflating a little.  Sheâs not getting anything right today.  âYou donât have tââ
âNo, itâs okay.â  Nicole reaches into the center console and withdraws a metalclipboard.  âI donât mind,â she says, handing it over to Wynonna before pulling away from the stop sign and turning at the intersection.
Excitement.  Thatâs what Wynonna had seen rippling beneath Nicoleâs skepticism.  And maybe even a little hope.
God, she really does love this job.
âWhatâs this?â Wynonna asks, looking over the pages of checklists on the clipboard.
âThatâs our Daily Patrol Log,â Nicole explains as she continues driving to the next location on the list.  âI sat down with several of the local business owners last year when Nedley first started giving me more leeway and responsibilities.  We worked out a schedule of rotating patrols for their establishments to help with the new visibility directive I was writing, and also to encourage better preventativepolicing.â
âSo you really do justâŚÂ  drive around and jiggle their door handles every day?â Wynonna asks after staring at Nicole for a long moment with a raised eyebrow.
âItâs more than that, Wynonna.â  Nicole rolls her eyes, but continues explaining, her tone much gentler now.  âIncreasing our visibility in these areas helps make both the owners and the customers feel safer.  We do a rotating schedule during the day shifts, which mostly just consists of driving by, or checking the locks on the back doors and storage areas â jiggling the handles, as you put it â so that we donât interrupt their normal business.  People get used to seeing us around, even in the background, and that makes it less likely for a bunch of shitheads to show up and cause trouble.â
She glances over to see if Wynonna is actually paying attention or if sheâs already being ignored.  To her surprise, Wynonna is still watching her intently. Â
âAnd for the night shift, we check every business on every shift â so long as time allows; sometimes weâre too busy with active calls and have to just do spot checks when we can â but we still try to do them in different orders so that no one can pinpoint exactly when weâll be there.â  They pull into the back parking lot of the Crown Surplus, and Nicole shifts in her seat to face Wynonna.  âThe night checks are a little more involved.  We get out and walk the perimeter.  Check all of the doors and windows.  Make sure the alarms are engaged.  Clear out any jackholes that are drinking on the premises.  Things like that.â
âAnd thisâŚâ  Wynonna gestures first at the clipboard in her hand, and then out the window at the building theyâre parked behind.  âIt actually works?â
âSome.  Itâs justâŚâ  She tilts her head to the side and Wynonna watches as she searches for the right words.  âI mean, Purgatory is a dangerous place, evenwhen these people want to bury their heads in the sand about whatâs going on.  And if I⌠ If I can get them to trust us, even just a little bit more than they used to, then at least theyâre more likely to come to us â to me â if some weird shit starts happening.  You know?  Like if they have someone that they think might actually believe them instead of just telling them theyâre crazyâŚâ
Nicole sighs and turns to stare out the window, the sudden silence in the car covering them like a thick blanket until itâs almost smothering.
âI donât know,â she finally says, still looking out the window.  âMaybe itâs stupid.  Just wishful thinking on my part.â
âItâs not,â Wynonna says immediately, reaching out to lay a hand on Nicoleâs forearm.  She turns back to look at Wynonna, clearly surprised by the gesture.  âItâs not stupid.â
âItâs not?â  Nicole doesnât sound convinced.
âNo.  Itâs important,â Wynonna says quietly, squeezing Nicoleâs arm gently.  âWhat youâre doing for these people.  Whether they recognize it or not.â
Itâs in that moment that Wynonna realizes sheâs talking about herself, too, and clears her throat uncomfortably as she jerks her hand back away from Nicoleâs arm.
âYou came up with all of this on your own?â she asks, settling back into her seat and plucking at the string on her jeans again.  She smirks to herself when she sees Nicoleâs face immediately begin to flush.
Some things never change.
âYeah, I uhâŚâ Nicole mumbles, rubbing at the back of her neck.  âI guess I did.  I ran it all by Nedley after Iâd written it up, before I met with the business owners. But, ummâŚâ  She gives a dismissive half-shrug.  âI guess I just wanted to help any way I could.â
Wynonna doesnât say anything, but she does give a slight nod that causes Nicole to duck her head shyly.  They sit in an awkward silence for a long moment before Wynonna hands the clipboard back to Nicole.
âSo I guess we gotta gââ
âHaught,â Ruthieâs voice interrupts as the radio crackles to life between them.  âGot Ranger Jett on the line for you.  Sounds urgent.â
â10-4, Ruthie,â Nicole answers after grabbing the console mic.  âGo ahead and patch him through.â
â10-4â
Thereâs a short beep followed by a series of clicks before a new voice comes through, slightly staticky from the relayed connection.
âHello? Â Sheriff Haught?â
âHey, Robin.  Not officially the Sheriff yet,â Nicole says with a slight grin, âbut whatâs up?â
Itâs a little girl, Sheriff,â he continues, ignoring Nicoleâs playful comment.  âSheâsmissing.â
//
âI canât, Wynonna.  Iâm still on shift.â
âTechnically, your shift ended two hours ago.â  Nicole eyes her carefully, and Wynonna shrugs.  âJust sayinâ.â  She gives the silver flask a jiggle where sheâs still holding it out between them.
She had done her best to channel Dolls earlier when sheâd needed to snap Nicole out of her stupor.  But recognizing the haunted look in her eyes now, Wynonna decides itâs time for some good old-fashioned Earp tactics.
Whiskey.
Itâs never let her down before.
Okay, maybe it hasâŚÂ  but whoâs counting?  Thatâs not important at the moment.  Whatâs important is that Nicole is warring with a darkness right now, and sometimes you just need a little fire in your belly to hold it at bay for a little whilelonger.
Or at least until Waverly can get here and fix things the right way.
She watches the gears turn in Nicoleâs head, like sheâs weighing a heavy decision, and is more than a little surprised when Nicole reaches out to take the flask from her.  She raises an eyebrow, but Nicole levels a look at her that practically dares her to say something about it when she raises the flask to her lips and downs several large gulps without so much as flinching.
âWell, alright then.â  Wynonna takes the flask when Nicole hands it back, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand.  Itâs more than half empty.  Wynonna gives Nicole an impressed look, raising the flask in a mock toast.  âCheers, Haughtshot,â she says before downing the rest of it.
No way sheâs gonna let an Earp be outdone when it comes to drinking.  Especially not by Five-O.  Though, to be completely fair, Wynonna has always been impressed with Nicoleâs constitution.  It takes a lot to get her drunk, and even then, she still continues to hold her own.  Sheâs proven that over and over again.
Drinking whiskey that night at the station a year and a half ago, back when times were simpler.  Nicole had matched her swig for swig, but the minute theyâd gotten sucked into an actual case down in the morgue, sheâd sobered up instantly.  Thatâs not easy to do, and Wynonna knows it.
Just a handful of months later, covering for Wynonna while staking out Jonas by drinking for both of them just to keep the baby safe.  Sheâd definitely gotten drunker that time around, but no so much so that she couldnât still shoot out a fuse box from across the room with a .380 Walther PPK sheâd pulled out of her sock, and thatâs saying something, given their long history of questionable accuracy.
And just a couple of days ago in that Revenant bar.  Nicole had been drunk off her ass by the end of that disaster, but even though she would never admit it out loud, Wynonna knows that Nicole is the one that technically won that drinking contest fair and square.  The Revenant had lost when heâd hurled everything back up.  And WynonnaâŚÂ  Well, Wynonna had been cheating the entire time.  And that leaves Nicole.  Who matched Wynonna and the Rev drink for drink, kept all of it down, and then, even though she was unsteady on her feet, she still managed to help Wynonna kick some ass in the woods.
If thereâs one thing Wynonna can respect, itâs the ability to hold your liquor.  And Nicole keeps proving over and over that she can match pace with an Earp.  So thatâs pretty solid in Wynonnaâs book.
She looks back at Nicole, whose cheeks are now flushed from the healthy dose of whiskey.  Tucking the empty flask back into the inside pocket of her leather jacket, she climbs up onto the trunk of Nicoleâs cruiser.  Nicole starts to balk, but Wynonna ignores her, patting the space beside her.
âCâmon, Haught.  We got a little time before your unicorn gets here.  Take a load off.â
âWaverlyâs coming?â  Thatâs the first sign of hope sheâs seen in Nicole since they originally got the call from Robin.
âSheâs already on her way.â
Nicole lets out a weary sigh, but climbs up next to Wynonna without protest, leaning back on her hands as her feet find purchase on the bumper.  She looks up at the moon, already visible in the dimming twilight, and Wynonna can see the deep worry lines etched across her brow and at her mouth.  For a fleeting moment, she looks far older than her twenty-seven years would suggest.
Wynonna knows a little bit about that.  Sheâs twenty-eight now, but sometimes she feels like sheâs already been dragged through a hundred lifetimes full of griefand guilt and loss.
âHey, itâs okay to relax for a minute.â Â She reaches over and pats Nicoleâs knee. Â âToday was a win, Nicole.â Â
Sheâs quiet for a long moment, before whispering something so softly that Wynonna can barely make it out over the rustling leaves in the nearby trees.
âSometimes itâs hard to tell in this town.â
Ainât that the goddamn truth.
//
âWeâve been out here for hours, Nicole. Â Maybe we shoââ
âWeâre not giving up, Wynonna!â
Nicole stomps off through the trees, and Wynonna lets her go. Â
Itâs suspicious that another kid has already gone missing in the woods again, especially so soon after what they went through with the missing kids on Christmas just barely a week ago.  She and Charlie had tracked them down andwiped out one of Bulsharâs evil beekeeper hives, rescuing Robin and severalothers in the process.  Surely he hasnât already rebuilt and started over againâŚ
No, something about this one feels different, she thinks as she watches Nicole search for tracks in the underbrush up ahead, weighed down by far more than just the pack full of gear slung over her shoulders.  Her phone buzzes in her pocket before she has time to think any more about that.
Angelpants: Â Are you still with Nicole? Â Sheâs not answering her phone.
Bacon Donut: Â weâre on a call
Angelpants: Â Everything okay?
Bacon Donut: Â little girl missing in the woods
Angelpants: Â Bulshar???
Bacon Donut:  nah peacemaker isnât giving me any tingly feelings in my pants
Angelpants: Â WYNONNA
Bacon Donut: Â i think she just got lost
Bacon Donut: Â mom lost track of her by the playground whilechasing after toddler
Angelpants: Â Is Nicole okay?
Bacon Donut: Â sheâs in full sheriff mode right now
Angelpants: Â You guys need anything?
Bacon Donut: Â the whole cavalry is out here
Bacon Donut: Â i think weâre good
Bacon Donut: Â you just work on that research babygirl
Angelpants:  OkayâŚÂ  But keep me posted?
Bacon Donut: Â 10-4
Angelpants:  You really have been spending a lot of time with Nicole lately.  lol
Bacon Donut: Â shut it shortstack
Angelpants: Â Be careful, okay?
Bacon Donut: Â you got it boss
Wynonna slides her phone back in her pocket and does her best to catch up to Nicole again.  Nicole continues to ignore her, and Wynonna approaches cautiously.
âHeyâŚâ  She hesitates when Nicole freezes in place, but doesnât turn around.  âCharlie has the entire fire department out here, and Robin called in all of the other Park Rangers.  I wasnât suggesting that everyone give up, Haught.  I was just wondering if we shouldnât leave it to the Search & Rescue boys, since thatâs what they do.â
âIâm Search & Rescue, Wynonna!â Nicole snaps as she finally spins to face Wynonna.  She points at one of the patches on the pack sheâs carrying.  âI got certified in it at the Academy, because I never wanted another little girl to be stuck in the woods by herself with no one to come looking for her.â
Oh.
Oh.
Wynonna suddenly understands everything.
That explains a lot.
She opens her mouth to say something â anything â but it seems her brain has forgotten how to string two words together right now.
âItâs going to be dark soon, Wynonna,â Nicole continues, much quieter this time.  Her eyes are hollow and sheâs white as a ghost.  Even paler than usual.  âItâs going to be dark, and sheâll be out here all alone, cold and scared, and⌠ andâŚâ Nicole swallows hard around the lump that Wynonna can hear is stuck inher throat.  âWhat if it had been Waverly?â she pleads, desperate for Wynonna to stay out here with her.
âOkay,â Wynonna says, finally finding her words again.  She reaches out and catches the trembling hand that Nicoleâs been waving around.  âOkay, Nicole.  Weâll keep looking for her.â
They hear the muffled calls of the other groups echoing through the forest as they continue their search.  Nicole was right: the sun is beginning to set, and the beautiful colors painted across the sky bring a sharper chill in the air with them.  Theyâre running out of time.
Wynonna suddenly feels an odd weightless sensation, and then her stomach is in her throat as she starts to tumble forward.  Before she connects with anything, though, sheâs being yanked backward by her collar, until sheâs lying on her back, staring up at the trees.
One red-headed tree in particular.
âYouâve gotta watch where youâre going, Earp,â Nicole says sternly, hands on her hips as she looks down at Wynonna.  âI donât have time to be saving your ass, too.â
âThanks, Haught,â Wynonna manages to croak. Â âI didnât even seââ
âShhhhhâŚâ Nicole whispers harshly.  âDid you hear that?â
Wynonna frowns, straining her ears in the eerie silence of the forest around them.  Just as sheâs about to accuse Nicole of losing her mind, she hears it, too.  Itâs faint, almost as though theyâd imagined it, but itâs there.
âHelloâŚ?  Is somebody there?â
Nicole trembles slightly as she pulls Wynonna up from the ground.
âThis is the Sheriffâs Department!â she yells, loudly enough to make Wynonna wince.  âCall out if you can hear me!â
They both wait, staring at each other with wide eyes.
âHELP! Â WEâRE DOWNÂ HERE! Â HELP, PLEASE!â
âWe?â they mouth in unison, still frozen in place for half a second longer.
âDonât move!  Weâre on our way!â Nicole finally yells back as she turns and sprints in the direction of the voice, along the edge of the ridge that Wynonna had nearly tumbled over. Â
Wynonna does her best to keep up with Nicole in the waning light, struggling to stay upright in the wake of the sure-footed Sheriff.  Itâs painfully obvious that Nicole is far more comfortable in this terrain than Wynonna will ever be.
They finally begin to slow their approach when they start to hear barking mixed in with the small voice.  That must be the âweâ the little girl was referring to.
âWeâre almost there, Ashley!â Nicole calls out again as she begins looking around the new area.  âCan you tell me where you are?â
âI fell,â the little girl cries in response.  âI canât move my leg!â  Her answer is accompanied by another round of barks and frantic whines.  âAnd Hugoâsdown here, too,â she adds.
Nicole drops to her belly in the dirt and the leaves and creeps closer to the stony ledge.  Wynonna crouches and carefully peers over Nicoleâs shoulder to find asheer rock face, wrought with stray branches and roots and moss-covered rockssticking out at odd angles.  Wynonna knows from experience now just how easy it would be to miss a step if you werenât looking and suddenly find yourself twenty feet below with nowhere to go.
There, in a muddy patch of snow and leaves tucked away in the shadows below the ledge, they can see a puffy pink coat with a matching set of snow boots â one leg sticking out at an odd angle â and a large dog wrapped around a shivering body.
âHi, Ashley.  Iâm Officer Nicole.â
âHi, Nicole,â Ashley answers weakly.
âDonât move,â Nicole says again, gentler this time. Â âIâm coming down to get you, okay?â
âOkay,â the little girl sniffles.  âHurry.  Iâm scaâ  I mean, I think Hugo is scared.â
âDonât be scared, Hugo,â Nicole says, nodding seriously at the dog.  âEverythingâs gonna be okay now.â
Hugo barks once â a muted sort of woof â and Ashley clutches a little tighter at his fur.
âHe says heâll try to be brave.â
âThatâs very good, Ashley.â  Nicole pushes up onto her hands and knees.  âYou and Hugo just need to be brave a little longer while I get my rope ready, and then Iâll be down to get you, okay?â
âOkayâŚâ
âYou can talk to my friend Wynonna here while Iâm working.â  Nicole nudges Wynonna a little closer to the edge, despite the what the fuck look she levels in Nicoleâs direction.  âJust talk to her, Wynonna,â Nicole says so that only Wynonna can hear her.  âSo she knows weâre still here and sheâs not alone anymore.â
âUh⌠ hi,â Wynonna says awkwardly, sticking her head over the ledge and waving.  She turns to see Nicole unpacking her gear, ratcheting one end of her rope to a nearby tree that looks sturdy enough to serve as an anchor.  âIâm WynonnaâŚâ
âDuh,â Ashley says, giggling a little in spite of herself.  âOfficer Nicole already said that.â
âOfficer Nicole says a lot of things,â Wynonna grumbles loudly, sticking her tongue out dramatically at Nicole behind her back.  Ashley giggles again, and Hugo thumps his tail against the leaves.  âMy little sister would love that pink coat of yours,â Wynonna adds after a moment, unsure of what else to say.
âYou have a little sister?â
âUh huh.  Her name is Waverly.â
âWalervy?â
âEh⌠Close enough, kid,â Wynonna snorts.  âShe loves pink stuff and rainbows and unicorns.â
âI have a unicorn!â  Thereâs less sniffling in Ashleyâs voice now, replaced by excitement instead.
âSo does my sister!â Wynonna laughs, especially when hearing Nicole groan behind her.
âHis name is Sparkle!â
âHis name⌠ is SparkleâŚâ  Wynonna can barely contain herself.  âThatâsââ
âWynonna,â Nicole hisses quietly.  âBe nice.â
ââa great name!â Wynonna finishes.
âWhat did your sister name her unicorn?â Ashley calls up again after a moment.
âOfficer Nicole,â Wynonna giggles, and then yelps when Nicole kicks her right in the ass with her muddy boot.
âWhat?â Ashley asks, confused.
âUmmm... I said Tootsie Roll!â Wynonna calls back a little louder this time, still trying to stifle a giggle.
âLike the candy?â
âYep,â Wynonna answers, popping the p loudly.  âJust like that.â
âThatâs kinda weirdâŚâ Ashley says, thinking about it for a moment.  âBut I like it!â
âYeah, thatâs kind of what I thought, too,â Wynonna says, glancing back over her shoulder and catching the hint of a smile on Nicoleâs face, just barely hidden behind the curtain of her hair.
âOkay, Ashley,â Nicole says, stepping back up to the ledge.  âIâm coming down to get you now.  All I need you to do is just stay still, okay?  Donât try to move until Iget there.â
âOkay,â Ashley answers, sounding nervous again.
âYou need to hang on to this for me,â Nicole tells Wynonna, handing her a portion of the rope after making sure itâs secured through her climbing harness.  âGetting down there shouldnât be too difficult, but Iâll need your help when Iâm climbing back up with her.â
âWhat?â Wynonna balks, trying to back away.  âI donât know anything about this shit.  What if I fuck it up?â  She canât handle this kind of responsibility right now.
âWynonna, focus,â Nicole says sharply, grabbing her by the shoulder.  âLook.â  She points over to the tree.  âIâm rigged up to a pulley system.  All I need you to do is keep this part tight.  When I create slack from climbing, just keep pulling it tight, okay?  It will keep me from falling backward if I lose my footing with her inmy arms.â
Wynonna doesnât understand how any of this climbing shit works, but she thinks she can manage at least that much.
âOkay,â she finally says, still a little unsure.  âHey, waitâŚâ she adds when Nicole starts to back up toward the ledge.  âDo you have our coordinates or whatever?  I was just gonna shoot of a quick text to Charlie with our location so he can send some of the EMS boys this way.â
Nicole pulls out her phone and frowns at the missed calls and texts from Waverly.
âItâs okay,â Wynonna says quickly when she sees Nicoleâs face.  âI texted her a while ago to let her know we were on a call.â
âThanksâŚâ Nicole says softly.  âI didnât mean to ignore her.  I justâŚâ
âHad a lot on your mind?â
âYeah,â Nicole answers sheepishly, and then clears her throat a couple of times.  âHereâs the coordinates,â she says, handing Wynonna her phone with the GPS app open.
âOkay, got it,â Wynonna says after typing a few things into a text message.  âNow go and save the day, Sheriff,â she says, warmly and with no hint of sarcasm, as she hands Nicoleâs phone back to her.
Nicole rappels down the rock face with ease, and Wynonna watches as she pulls out the emergency med kit from her pack and places a cervical collar around Ashleyâs neck to stabilize her c-spine.  Itâs not ideal to be moving someone like this without a full backboard, but sometimes the circumstances of these search and rescue situations donât always provide the best conditions.  At least sheâd been sitting up the entire time sheâd been talking to them.  That has to count for something.  Hopefully.
After placing a makeshift splint on Ashleyâs leg, Nicole begins to prepare her for transport.  She carefully works another harness up over Ashleyâs legs and hips, and then secures it to her own with another short section of rope and somecarabiners.  Then she slips Ashleyâs hands through a set of loops that almost look like handcuffs made of rope, explaining that they will help her hold on to Nicole while sheâs climbing back up.
Ducking her head to put it through Ashleyâs arms so theyâre around her neck, Nicole scoops her up and holds her close as she moves back to the rocks and slowly begins her ascent.  Wynonna is diligent in keeping the slack out of the rope, digging her heels into the soft earth to help her hold her ground.  Itâs much slower going, and theyâre nearly out of light now, but soon enough, Nicoleâs head pops up over the ledge and Wynonna kneels down to take Ashley from her and get her back on solid ground.
âCan you tell us what happened, Ashley?â  Nicole asks as she takes off her jacket and drapes it around Ashleyâs shoulders.  Wynonna is immediately reminded of the photo sheâd recently seen of a young Nicole wearing Nedleyâs coat on the morning heâd found her downstream from the massacre. Â
âWe were playing in the park with Mama and Matthew,â Ashley starts, sniffling again.  âMatthew kept tryinâa run away, and Mama had to chase after him.  But then Hugo saw a squirrel and tried to catch it and we just kept runninâ and then we were in the woods and there were so many trees and we got lost and then I fell and⌠andâŚâ  Anything else she wanted to say gets lost in the heaving sob that wracks her entire body.
âShhh⌠ Itâs okay,â Nicole soothes, wrapping her arms around the little girl.  She tucks her face securely into Nicoleâs shoulder, and Nicole strokes her hair gently. âItâs okay.  Youâre safe now.  Youâre safe.â
âWhat about Hugo,â Ashley eventually hiccups, once sheâs caught her breath again.  âYou canât just leave him down there!â
Wynonna and Nicole peer over the ledge, watching Hugo prance and pace along the edge of the rock face, whining and searching for his human.
âOkay,â Nicole says after a brief moment of deliberation.  âYou stay here with Wynonna, and Iâll go and get Hugo.â
âHow in the fuâ  âŚthe fââ  Wynonnaâs eyes slide over toward Ashley.  âThe eff are you gonna do that?â
âUmmmâŚâ  Nicole thinks for a moment, looking at everything thatâs spread out in front of her.  âI think I have an idea.â  She dumps everything out of her pack, until itâs completely empty, and holds it up.  She eyes it for a minute, and then shrugs at Wynonna.  âHopefully this will workâŚâ
âOh, my god,â Wynonna groans, resting her head in her hand.  She knows exactly what Nicole is going to do.
Nicole slings the empty pack back over her shoulders and starts toward the ledge again, but pauses when Ashley reaches out and takes her face in her little hands.
âOfficer Nicole,â she says very seriously. Â âYou have to be very careful with him. Â Mama says heâs an old man now.â
âIâll be very careful with him,â Nicole answers, her voice cracking a little.  âI promise.â
Wynonna definitely doesnât have a lump in her throat. Â Nope. Â Absolutely not.
They begin the process all over again, and Nicole sits with Hugo for a few minutes at the bottom so that heâll calm down and hopefully trust her enough for what needs to happen next.  After a bit of coaxing and a couple of false starts, she finally manages to get the aging German shepherd into her giant backpack, with just his head sticking out so that he can watch over her shoulder.  He doesnât seem particularly pleased about this development, but he lets her secure the zipper and lock it in place so he canât fall out on the way back up.  It will have to do.
She hoists the pack back up onto her shoulders and starts climbing the wall again, Wynonna dutifully working her end of the rope.  It doesnât take quite as long as it did when Nicole was bringing Ashley up since she has the use of both arms, but Wynonna can tell sheâs feeling pretty exhausted by the time she reaches the top.
Thankfully, Charlie and the boys have arrived by then, already tending to Ashley while Nicole frees Hugo from his port-a-puppy status.  He barks a few times and then runs in an impressive amount of circles before finally jumping up on the back of the ATV and settling in next to Ashley, refusing to leave her side again.
They all set out back toward the trailhead where Ashleyâs family is waiting for them, leaving Wynonna and Nicole standing alone in the silence of the dusk-covered woods.
âThat was some Haught shit back there, Officer Nicole,â Wynonna says after a few minutes.  She pats Nicole on the back when she gets no response.
Nicole says nothing, merely swaying on her feet until she has to reach out and lean against one of the nearby trees for support. Â
Then she promptly doubles over and vomits all over her boots.
âOkay, even I didnât see that comingâŚâ Wynonna says, unsure of how to react.
Nicole still doesnât say anything, heaving three more times before sheâs apparently emptied her entire stomach out into the muddy snow.  When she finally stands back up, Wynonna takes her by the elbow and starts leading her back the way they came.
âAlright, Red.  Letâs get you back to the land of the living.â
//
âMaybe try talking to her.â
Waverlyâs voice is still bouncing around in Wynonnaâs head as she watches Nicole stare out into the darkness, shivering slightly despite having her jacket back after Charlie had replaced it with a proper blanket.  She reaches out and places a hand on Nicoleâs knee.
âI shouldnât have called you âDeputy Dipshitâ the other day.â  Nicole immediately stiffens beside Wynonna.  That definitely touched a nerve.  She curses herself and starts to change the subject, but she sees Waverly glaring at her with her arms crossed, telling her to talk to her about it, so instead, she pushes on.  âI was only fucking with you,â she hastens to justify, âbut I still shouldnât have gonethere.  It was a shitty thing to say, and you didnât deserve it.â
âMaybe I did,â Nicole sighs, visibly deflating.  âSeems like everyone has that opinion these days.â
âI donât,â Wynonna says immediately. Â âNedley doesnât.â
âRight,â Nicole scoffs.  âYou drag my ass about my job every chance you get.  And Bunny LoblawâŚâ  Nicole swallows had and looks away again.
âBunny Nut Cheerios can choke on her pearls, for all I care,â Wynonna seethes.  âAnd meâŚâ Wynonna starts, a little more sheepishly.  âWell, since when do you listen to a word I say, anyway?â
Nicole just raises an eyebrow at her.
âOkay, look.  You know I donât have the best track record with cops.  Even Nedley, from before I came back.  But youâreâŚâ  Wynonna waves her hand around awkwardly.  ââŚDifferent.â
âDifferent,â Nicole repeats in a deadpan voice.
âYes.  Different, okay?â  Wynonna kicks her foot on the bumper of the cruiser while she tries to figure out what to say next.  âLike.  Even before you kneweverything, you still tried to look out for me and my sister.  And then you took a bullet for her.  And you believe me when I tell you somethingâs important, even if I canât always explain it right then.  AndâŚÂ  and you didnât just automatically assume I was crazy and needed to be locked up again.â Â
That last part comes out much quieter than the rest of it.  Nicole turns to fully face Wynonna and opens her mouth to respond, but Wynonna holds up a hand to stop her.
âIâm not very good at this shit, but Iâm trying to say something important here.  Let me get it out.â  Nicole just nods silently, and Wynonna continues.  âAnd then my sister fell for you, and that scared me.  Because I thought you were just going to take her away from me.  But you didnât, and you stayed, and she stayed, and⌠ You tell me you love her, and then you told me you love me, too, and⌠ andâŚâ  Wynonna sighs and buries her head in her hands.  âLook, Iâm just sayinâ,â she says, popping her head back up again.  âI know we made up and called a truce the other night back at the station, but I still shouldnât have said that.  You didnât deserve it, okay?â
âOkayâŚâ Â
Thereâs a lot to unpack there, but Nicole is apparently willing to just let it go for now.  Thankfully.
âWhat if I canât do this, Wynonna?â Nicole asks instead after a few moments of silence.  âWhat if Iâm not cut out to be the Sheriff?â
âNo way,â Wynonna snorts.  âThatâs not possible.â  Nicole shrugs a little helplessly at her.  âListen, Haughtdog.  Nedley has been talking about you non-stop since you started working for him a year and a half ago.  That man believes in you more than he believes in Willie Nelson.  And I told him a month ago â before any of this other shit started happening â that you were ready to take his place whenever he was ready to let you.  That you had the kind of fight in you that this town needs right now.â
âYou⌠ you did?â  Nicole seems genuinely surprised by this.
âI did,â Wynonna nods.  âAnd I know for a fact that you heard every word I said to olâ Bun Bun after we finished saving her ass.  Naughty Haughty and your eavesdropping.â  Wynonna gives an approving waggle of her eyebrows and Nicole shoves her playfully in the shoulder.  âBut the truth is, Nicole⌠ Youâre the best goddamn cop this town has ever seen.  Nedley is a good man, and heâs done the best he can with trying to balance the protection and the cover-up for the past thirty years.  But youâreâŚÂ  Well, like I said.  Youâre different.  Youâve got your eyes wide open going into this, and youâre everything this godforsaken town needs right now.â
Nicole stares down at her hands, suddenly very interested in the stitching on her gloves.
âI mean, look at how much of a difference youâve already made just with something as simple as your handle-jiggling thingy.  The people trust you. Theyâre glad to see you coming, and thatâs important in a town like this.â
âMaybe soâŚâ  Nicole glances back up at Wynonna.  âThanks, Earp.â
âFor what?â Wynonna asks pointedly. Â âIf you ever tell a living soul I said any ofthat, Iâll deny it to my grave.â
Nicole snorts and shakes her head.
âFair enough.â
âNow, uhâŚâ  Wynonna wipes the palms of her hands nervously on her jeans.  Her head is screaming at her to just leave it at that, counting this conversation as a win.  But her heart remembers the way Nicole had looked in the woods, and how haunted sheâd been when theyâd gotten back to the parking lot of theTrailhead.  She feels Waverly coaxing her to continue.  âDo you, uh⌠ want to talk about whatâs really bothering you?â
Nicole instantly shrinks back into herself, looking back up at the darkened sky.  Wynonna could kick herself for being such a bull in the china closet, but sheâs really trying here.  Thatâs got to count for something.
âHow much do you remember from that night?â she asks tentatively.
âNot a lot,â Nicole mumbles.  âJust flashes.  That asshole in black leather.  Screams.  Blood.  Floating in the canoe.  Freezing so badly I thought I was turning to ice.â
âThat⌠sounds like a lot to me,â Wynonna says.  âAnd the little girl today?â
âI knew how scared she would be.  Alone.  In the dark.  In these woodsâŚâ  A tear trickles down Nicoleâs cheek.  âIt put me right back there again.â  She wipes discreetly at her face, and Wynonna chooses not to say anything about it.
âWaverly said youâve been having nightmares about it?â
âShe told you about that?â  Nicole tries to sound mad, but Wynonna recognizes the truth in her voice: embarrassment and shame.
âShe tells me a lot of things,â Wynonna says gently.  âDo you⌠want to talk about them?â
âWhat would you know about it?â Nicole huffs angrily, instantly starting to throw up a wall between them.  Wynonna isnât having any of it.  Not this time.
âAbout what, Nicole?â She cuts in firmly.  âAbout something so traumatic from your childhood that it still haunts you twenty years later?  About darkness and death that twists you up so badly you end up in the loony bin for it?  About closing your eyes and seeing every person thatâs ever died because you failed them etched across your eyelids until you canât tell whatâs real in the moment and whatâs only a memory in a dream?â
Nicole stares at Wynonna, wide-eyed and mouth gaping open.  Wynonna just sits patiently, waiting for Nicole to process everything she just said.
It takes a minute.
âS-sorryâŚâ Nicole eventually stutters.  âI wasnât thinking.  I didnâtâŚÂ  I⌠ S-sorryâŚâ
âYou donât need to apologize, Nicole.â  Wynonna reaches out and takes one of Nicoleâs hands.  âI was just trying to point out that maybe I get it a little more than you might think.  If you everâŚÂ  you knowâŚâ  She lets go of Nicoleâs hand and waves it awkwardly in the air.  ââŚNeeded someone.  To talk to, I mean.â
âWaverlyâs so good.  Sheâs always there for me through the nightmares.â  Nicole sighs, looking back down at her hands.  âBut sometimes I feel like Iâmdrowning in it.  Like Iâm going to drown both of us, and I canât even see what it is thatâs dragging me under.â  She wipes at her face again, more openly this time.
âYeah, I get that,â Wynonna admits. Â âWhy do you think I left for so long?â
âIâm not going to leave her, Wynonna!â Nicole says sharply, sitting up straight again with her brow furrowed.
âI know,â Wynonna defends, throwing her hands up between them.  âI know.  Thatâs not what I meant.  ItâsâŚÂ  I just⌠ Youâre a lot stronger than me, Haught.  I was too weak.  I had to leave because I couldnât handle it.  I couldnât handle it myself, and I sure as fuck couldnât hand dragging Waverly down with me.â
âAm I?â Nicole asks quietly.
âAre you what?â  Wynonna frowns, confused.
âDragging her down?  Would she be better off without my baggage?â  Wynonna doesnât think sheâs ever seen Nicole look so broken before.
âNo,â she says firmly.  âGod, no.  Youâre the one thatâs given that girl wings,Nicole.âÂ
âI donât know about that,â Nicole sniffles, smiling slightly despite herself.  âSeems like this Julian dude probably had more to do with that than me.â
Wynonna canât help but snort.
âCanât believe Mama bagged herself a fucking angel.â  She barks out a laugh, but then her tone turns darker.  âYou deserve your angel far more than she ever did.â
This time itâs Nicole that reaches out and takes Wynonnaâs hand.
âHey.â  She squeezes gently until Wynonna meets her eye.  âWeâll figure this out together, okay?  All of us.â
Wynonna searches Nicoleâs eyes and finds nothing but genuine compassion there.  She wants to say something â feels like she should â but she canât seem to find the right words, so she just nods her acknowledgement. Â
Then, as if someone else is controlling her body, she reaches out and wraps her arms around Nicole, pulling her in close.  Nicole feels stiff at first, like sheâs notsure whatâs happening, but then she relaxes into the embrace, reaching aroundto close her own arms around Wynonnaâs shoulders.
They stay like that for several long moments, losing track of the number of heartbeats, before Wynonna pulls back again, looking a little flustered with herself.
âWhat, uh⌠ What was that for?â Nicole asks through a lopsided smile.
Wynonna shrugs as casually as she can manage.
âYou just looked like you really needed a hug.â
Just then, a pair of headlights comes sweeping into the parking lot, eventually coming to rest on the trunk of Nicoleâs squad car, lighting both of them up in the sudden brightness.  The engine cuts out and theyâre left with visions of a red jeep swimming behind the sunspots now floating in their eyes.
âSpeak of the devilâŚâ Wynonna says, wiping the salty tracks from her own face now.  âOr angel, I suppose,â she adds, nudging Nicole in her ribs with her elbow. Â
They both share a laugh as they hop down from the trunk, wiping their hands on their pants and feeling all of the joints in their body crack as they stretch out their weary limbs.  Waverly approaches them slowly, eyebrow raised.
âAm I interrupting something?â she asks, her tone suspicious.
âNope,â Wynonna hurries to say.  âNot a thing, Babygirl.  Weâve just been waiting on you.â
Waverly eyes Nicole, who just nods along innocently. Â
âRiiiightâŚâ
Before she can say anymore, Nicole has closed the distance between them, sweeping Waverly into her arms.  She kisses her deeply, far more than just a quick peck on the lips, before finally pulling back to nuzzle their noses together and eventually letting her forehead rest against Waverlyâs.
Wynonna would normally clear her throat or make gagging noises or harass them in some other way, but instead, this time she quietly watches.  Really watches.
Watches the way Nicole seems to draw strength from the simple fact that Waverly is near.  Watches the way Waverly clutches at Nicoleâs jacket, keeping her close and present in the moment and steady.  Watches them whisper softly to each other and the way Nicoleâs body instinctively relaxes at Waverlyâs touch.  Watches the way they both seem to be trying to protect each other at the same time.
Sheâd meant it before when she admitted to Nicole that she was scared when Waverly fell in love with her.  Scared that Nicole would take her away.  That Waverly would leave her.  But as she watches them now, she doesnât feel scared anymore.  They were made for each other.  They deserve each other.  And thereâs no way she can be jealous of that.  She couldnât ask for anyone betterto be taking care of her baby sister, and for all of the blustery sarcasm shethrows Nicoleâs way, sheâs also glad that she has someone like Waverly to takecare of her, too.
Thereâs been a lot of reevaluating lately.  About what family truly means.  Is it just about blood?  Are they destined to be bound to those who are related to them simply because they share some common DNA?  All Wynonnaâs blood brings is a curse of failure and leaving and death.  Generations of Earps had fallen to forces outside their control.  Daddy and Willa had betrayed their family.  Mama had bailed⌠ twice.  Is that really what Wynonna wants her family to be?
And what about the family you choose for yourself?  Sheâs not doing much better in that department, either.  She had to kill Shorty with her own two hands.  Dollsleft her to all of this alone, even though it wasnât the same way Mama had left.  And Doc⌠ Doc had chosen to betray her, to become the very thing they hunted, all because he couldnât deal with a little manpain. Â
She has Alice, and will always love her.  But god knows when the next time sheâll get to see her will be.  If she ever gets to see her again at all.  Just another piece of family thatâs been ripped away from her.
Maybe some things just arenât in the cards for the heir to a curse that she never asked for.
But then she looks over at Waverly and Nicole again.  Remembers Waverly telling her that she loves her.  Remembers Nicole telling her that she kind of loves her, too.  Remembers Nicole telling her âI got you, Earp,â and actually meaning it.  Remembers Waverly telling her âIâm here for you, now and forever,â and staying with her even though she could have run so many times.
Something clenches in Wynonnaâs chest, and she nearly forgets how to breathe.  She does have a family.  And itâs right here in front of her.  Just the three of them against the world.  Her sister, and⌠ her sisterâs girlfriend?  Her⌠ Nicole?  Her⌠ best friend.  The words feel foreign in her mind.  Sheâs never had a best friend before.  Not really.  But she looks back over everything she and Nicole have been through, and she thinks maybe⌠ maybe this is what that is supposed to feel like. Â
Besides.  Something tells her that at some point, sheâll eventually have to start calling Nicole her sister, too.
She doesnât think that would be such a bad thing.
âYou okay?â she hears Waverly asking, and she realizes that both Waverly and Nicole staring at her with raised eyebrows.
Fuck. Â Get your shit together, Earp.
âUh, yeahâŚâ  She clears her throat a couple of times and gives her patented thumbs up.  âAll good.  You guys ready to get out of here?â she asks, hoping to distract them.
âPlease,â Nicole answers wearily.
âGrab your bag and toss me your keys, Babygirl.  Iâll drive your Jeep home so you can ride with Haughtstuff.â
âYou sure?â Waverly asks, her eyes lighting up.
âOf course.  Go take care of your girl,â she says, walking over to kiss the side of Waverlyâs head as she takes the keys out of her hand.
âNicole said sheâs starving.  We were gonna stop by Mama Louâs.â  Waverlyâs voice is muffled as she digs through the cab of the Jeep for her bag and her purse.  âYou wanna join us before you head home?â she asks when her head pops back out again.
Wynonna glances over at Nicole, not wanting to intrude on their time together, but Nicole nods at her with a warm smile.
âSounds good,â she admits.  âI could murder a stack of pancakes.â
âWeâll follow you there,â Nicole says as she watches Waverly settle into the passenger seat of her squad car.
Wynonna nods and turns to climb into the Jeep, but stops when she feels a hand on her arm.
âWynonnaâŚâ  Nicoleâs mouth opens and closes a couple of times like a fish out of water as she tries to find the words to say.  âThanks,â she finally settles on.  âI, uh⌠ I donât think I could have made it through today without you.â
Wynonna smiles genuinely, no trace of sarcasm or teasing.  Then she shrugs like itâs the easiest thing in the world to say.
âYouâre family, Nicole.â

So with all this cold weather, super soft hc for a wayhaught day off where Waverly doesn't want to get out from under the blankets and is trying to convince Nicole to stay and cuddle (I doubt it takes much convincing though)
thought Iâd break up my filthy streak with a soft one also everyone tell @darienplays6688 that heâs awesome for always being able to find my old headcanons for you all whenever I canât
âwe all know waverlyâs always buried under her four blankets plus a bonus blanket AND sheâs the little spoon, and thatâs the only way she can achieve her perfect sleeping temperature
-Nicole is usually took hot but when waverlyâs snuggled up against her, she really canât find it in her to care all that much
-notice how I said usually
-because one morning they wake up, and itâs god damn FREEZING outside
-even the sun had taken to hiding behind the clouds to try and stay a bit warmer, it was that cold out
-and of course, Nicole had work
-her alarm goes off and waverlyâs hand is instantly around her, pulling her back into the warmth of the cocooned blankets
-no, you gotta stay
-her sleepy voice makes Nicole damn near melt
-Iâve got work, baby
-youâve got me too. Iâm more important
-so Nicole either has to brave the cold and go down to a dead station where she knows for a fact that nothing will happen because no one smart would go out into the weather, or stay cuddled up to her sleepy girlfriend under the blankets all day
-such a mystery which one she chooses

Current head canon I'm really enjoying for Bering and Wells is that, when not with Myka, HG sleeps with a light source so as to remind herself that she is no longer bronzed. I thought about it before and it makes so much sense that after that long with no sight, not being able to move or do anything but think that there would be more trauma than just the madness that her grief manifested into. So I think it makes sense that she can't stand complete darkness, that she would have issues being restrained. In those situations, I believe she would question whether she is currently actually bronzed and just imagining the details of her current situation.
I always loved the idea that when together Helena would fall asleep listening to Myka's heartbeat, that and the feel of Myka next to her is all she needs to be reminded that she is not trapped in the bronze sector.
I also now wonder if there was just a complete disconnect from her body in the bronze or did she just feel numb? Is she unable to stand being cold now because it reminds her of the immobility of those 100+ years?
Of course that now makes me want to read a fic where the power is out at the b&b and Myka comes home late in the evening from a retrieval to find Helena in their bed, bundled in blankets just staring at a candle burning to keep herself from panicking. Of course, Myka would know what Helena is going through and would carefully make Helena aware of her return before crawling into bed with her and chasing away any remaining worries.
*I have made another post where I will be linking to fics in this head canon as I find them again:

So after I saw your original post and tags about it, I pulled up the trophy list and it didn't have them separated for me. Thus I got really sad and sent that last ask. It seems the game still had an update pending though and now that it is updated, the trophy list shows them separated. I'm excited again.

5 and 25?
5. favourite game series?
wow this is hard... i really donât know how to narrow this down to just one?? when i was growing up, crash bandicoot, tony hawkâs pro skater, and ratchet and clank would all equally top the list (and i am SO PSYCHED to be getting new games for all of them). currently the last of us has taken over my soul (two games counts as a series, right?), but i know when horizon: forbidden west comes out, thatâs going to catapult above everything
25. what power-up or ability would you want IRL?
uhhh, you know what? i would love aloyâs strength/speed/stamina, because sheâs an absolute machine and honestly itâs just goals

âThe power when out. Itâs not the end of the world.â
Okay, so. First of all, I want to apologize for how long youâve been waiting, @darienplays6688. I hope the payoff is worth it.
And secondâŚÂ this thing severely got away from me. It is by no means a âquick, short prompt fill.â Iâve put it under a cut, because it ended up so long. Sorry, guys.
âââ-
Set a week after the events of 3x06, a day (and a half) before the beginning of 3x07.
âââ-
Itâs hard to be festive in a town like Purgatory. Â Even the name suggests that happiness willalways be just out of reach.
Ringing in the new year doesnât really feel like somethingworth celebrating. Â Not with Dolls goneand Alice hidden away and Nedley going off the rails. Â And they havenât heard from Doc in a fullweek, ever since he walked out on their Christmas dinner.
Jeremy has been spending more time than usual in the BlackBadge office now that Bulshar and his beekeeper oompa loompas have been forcedto relocate his Murder Tree Factory after Robin was rescued and brought safelyback home. Â Nicole can tell that heâsholding Robin at armâs length now, despite how obvious it is heâd rather be in those arms, because heâs afraid toget another innocent person dragged into their perpetual shitstorm.
Mama spends her time flitting around the homestead with abig smile on her face, but it doesnât reach her eyes and makes her look moresuspicious than Marshal Dolls had when he first moved to town. Â The Earp sisters are too blind to see it, toocaught up in the belief that they might finally be putting their family backtogether one piece at a time, but Nicole has always been exceptional at readingpeople, and Michelle is throwing up red flags quicker than a matador in thePlaza de Toros. Â
Sheâs hiding something. Something big. Â Nicole just hasnât been able to figure out what yet. Â Sheâs also not doing a very good job ofhiding the restlessness thatâs rippling just beneath the surface, either. Â Nicole has seen it far too many times not torecognize the symptoms. Â Sheâs getting readyto run, and Nicole can only hope that the inevitable fallout doesnât break hergirls beyond Nicoleâs ability to repair them.
Nicole will be starting on the campaign trail as soon as theholiday is over, and she really should be working on posters and buttons andspeeches full of promises that this cursed town will probably never let her actuallykeep. Â Her appointment to Sheriff isnâtofficial yet, and she doesnât want to leave anything to chance.
And Wynonna⌠ Well,Wynonnaâs idea of a New Yearâs Resolution is to never let her blood alcohollevel drop below the legal limit.  Sheâdrather be holed up in the barn with her whiskey and self-loathing, ruminatingon all the ways she continues to fail the people she loves.
But Waverly had insisted on a party.
And no one in this god-forsaken town knows how to tellWaverly Earp no.
So here they all are, awkwardly gathered at the homestead, with a bowl of well-spiked punch and platters full of snacks and ridiculousparty hats and poppers and steamers hanging from every conceivablesurface. Â Waverlyâs newest pop obsessionrings out through the speakers, making Nicole cringe a bit, but at leastfeeling the bass line thumping in her chest helps to ward off the chill thathangs in the air from the blizzard thatâs raging outside, whitewashing thedarkness and drowning out the moonlight.
Things are going fine.
Mostly.
As fine as anything can really be in a powderkeg of asituation. Â
Wynonnaâs drinking and above-average irritability, presumably owing to Doc⌠and something elseshe seems to be keeping under her hat â or more likely, in her pants â thesedays.  Mamaâs thinly-veiled sarcasm aboutevery positive thing this group is desperately trying to hang on to, especiallywhen it comes to Nicoleâs place among them, and now also her sideways glancesat the two newest additions.
Robinâs strange fascination with the Christmas tree and allof its trimmings that are still up from a week ago, particularly the pine conegarland, which Nicole is nearly certain she saw him pluck several seed scalesfrom, followed by a loud crunching sound that didnât fit with any of the snacksWaverly had set out on the food table. Jeremyâs nervous energy, more obvious than usual, mostly directed athaving Robin present, but also with a wary eye constantly on the enormous, sticky snowflakes painting wet streaks against the outside of the frostedwindows.
Things are fine.
Until they arenât.
The faint click that always signals the sudden halt ofelectricity through the lines might as well be a gunshot with the way it echoesaround the enclosed space of the homestead. An eerie silence immediately follows, a stark contrast to Waverlyâsmusic pouring through the speakers, and even the constant hum of the house âlike a heartbeat proving that itâs aliveâ leaves behind a warped void that temporarily swallows all of the sound aroundthem.
Itâs disconcerting, in a liminal space sort of way. Â
The few short seconds of silence stretch for an inordinateamount of time â like a rubber band pushing the limits of its threshold â beforesnapping violently back into place.
Waverly and Robin groan with disappointment in the suddendarkness. Â Mama makes a disgusted noisedeep in her throat, and Nicole can picture the way sheâs rolling her eyes, despite there being no light.
Wynonna puts together a string of obscenities thatâs farmore impressive than any of the strings of festive banners Waverly had hung around the room.
But the worst of it comes from Jeremy.
His voice is sheer panic as he begins to rambleincoherently, and Nicole tracks his movement in the darkness, following theloud shuffling of his frantic pacing. Â
âJesus fuck, Dr. Voldemort. The power went out. Â Itâs not theend of the world.â
âWynonna,â Waverlyscolds. Â Itâs immediately followed by asoft thump and a loud hiss, which was almost certainly an elbow to theribs. Â âAnd also,â Waverly addsmatter-of-factly, unable to help herself. âVoldemort wasnât a doctor. Â Hewas a dark wiââ
âWaverlyâŚâ Nicole cuts in gently.  She waits a beat in the darkness.  âTime and placeâŚâ
âRight, right.â Â Shefeels soft fingers trail down the skin of her forearm beneath the cuff of her sleeve, resting snugly at her elbow. Â âSorry,âWaverly says sheepishly.
Nicole feels Robin shifting beside her, making a move towardthe rapidly-spiraling Jeremy, but she reaches out and stops him with a hand tothe shoulder.
âWhy donât you help Waverly find some candles and get a firestarted in the fireplace.â Â She squeezeshis shoulder gently. Â âIâve got this.â
âUhh⌠ yeah.  Yeah, okay.â She can tell heâs concerned, but she feels him relax slightly under hergrip.  âThanks, Officer Haught.  Umm⌠ Imean Sheriff Haught.â
âNicole will be fine,â she says, smiling into thedarkness. Â With one final squeeze of hisshoulder, she nudges him toward the kitchen, where she can already hear Waverlyrummaging through drawers to find the matches.
Turning toward Jeremy, Nicole approaches him slowly, muttering a curse under her breath when she bangs her shin against the coffeetable sheâd misjudged. Â Heâs fidgeting withhis phone, his face lit up like a child telling ghost stories around acampfire, but his hands are shaking too much for him to successfully find theflashlight app. Â Heâs still mumbling, tooquick and too low for Nicole to actually make any of it out, but she has apretty good idea what this is about.
âJeremyâŚâ she calls softly, not wanting to startle him.  He doesnât respond, continuing to pace infront of her.  She reaches out to catchhis elbow as he passes, carefully leading him away from the rest of thegroup, over to the stairs, where they can sit without worrying about knockingthings over.
Nicole can feel his entire body vibrating, and she leans alittle closer, so that her shoulder and arm and leg press reassuringly againsthis side. Â He lets his face fall into hishands, his phone forgotten, still ignoring all attempts Nicole makes at tryingto break through to him.
âDo you still get the nightmares?â she finally asks, and hegoes rigid next to her.
âHowâŚâ  His head snapsup and whips around to face her.  Waverlyhas a few candles lit on the food table now, and Robin has managed the beginningsof a fire, glowing softly in the hearth. Nicole watches the faint glint of Jeremyâs eyes dart around the roomnervously.  âHow do you know about that?â
âI get them, too,â she says so low that only Jeremy can hearas she reaches out to take his hand in hers. Itâs cold and clammy, and she feels the warmth of her own hand slowlystart to seep into his skin. Â
âYou⌠ You do?â  She can see the shadow of his Adamâs applebob in the flickering light as he swallows thickly.
âOf course,â she admits plainly. Â âItâs always worst when the darkness comes.â
âIs itâŚâ  He shiftsuncomfortably, but doesnât make a move to withdraw his hand from hers.  âIs it that night⌠in the forest?â he finallyasks.
âYeah,â Nicole breathes, her own head hanging slightly asher shoulders slump forward a little to mirror his position.  âI had them for years when I wasyounger.  They finally went away when Iwas in high school.â  She looks away fromhim for a moment, fighting the burn behind her eyes.  âBut ever since the⌠ theâŚâ She looks back at him, shrugging one of her shoulders.  âWell,â she says gruffly.  âTheyâre back now.â
Jeremy nods, uncharacteristically quiet in the moment. Â The house around them is still silent, savefor the soft hissing and popping of the fire Robin continues to stoke, and themuttered grumbling coming from Wynonnaâs corner. Â Nicole can tell Waverly is runninginterference for the two of them over here on the steps, and her gratefulnessfor that causes a faint warmth to bloom in her chest, welcome against the coldmemories of the massacre in the woods just over twenty years ago.
âIt started with a blizzard like this,â Jeremy finally says, breaking the silence unexpectedly. Â Nicolepulls herself away from the images of the man dressed in black leathers, hismanic smile glinting in the moonlight while she shivered, alone, beneath anearby canoe. Â Her vision swims for amoment, but then comes into focus on the hard lines set deeply into Jeremyâsforehead.
âYour accident?â she prompts gently when he fails tocontinue. Â
âYeah,â he nods.  âMymomâŚâ  His voice trembles every bit as muchas his hand does where it still rests in Nicoleâs.
She gives him a minute to collect himself, letting him drawstrength from her presence and her patience.
âI was eleven,â he eventually says after clearing his throatroughly.  âIt was snowing out â it hadbeen for most of the week â but we were supposed to go to this stupid awardsbanquetâŚâ  His voice cracks, and he dropshis head into his free hand, his entire body shuddering.
âHey,â Nicole soothes, bringing her other hand up and usingboth of them to squeeze Jeremyâs hand tightly. âIt wasnât your fault, Jeremy.â
âIt was,â he snapssharply. Â He moves to pull away, but shedoesnât let him.
âIt wasnât,â she says again, firmly. Â âYou were just a kid. Â It wasnât your fault.â
He collapses against her and begins to sob. Â Nicole finally lets his hand go, only to wrapher arms around his shoulders. Â They staylike that for several minutes, until his breathing evens back out and he pullsaway enough to sit upright again. Â Heleaves his head resting on her shoulder, though.
âWe went off the road,â he finally manages through a sniffle. Â âWe went off the road, and the snow was sobad, it took them three days to find us.â
âThree days?â Â Nicoleâseyes go wide, and sheâs unable to keep the shock out of her voice.
âYeah,â he says, still not looking at her.  âI was trapped in there with her for threedays.  The snow drifts covered the windowsand everything.  It wasâŚâ  He clears his throat again, but his nextwords still come out as a whisper anyway. âEverything was so dark.â
âIâm so sorry, Jeremy,â Nicole murmurs, wrapping her arm alittle tighter around his shoulders and pulling him closer into his side.
âStorms like this⌠They make me kindaâŚâ  He flaps hishands around dramatically.  âAntsy.â
Thereâs a beat of silence, and then he snorts loudly.
âWell. Â More antsythan usual, anyway.â
Nicole canât help but chuckle at that, too, but he sobers upagain quickly and she follows his lead.
âHow do you, uhâŚâ  Hefinally glances up at her.  âY-youknow.  Deal with the nightmares?â
âTo be completely honest,â she sighs, âitâs more like thenightmares deal with me.â
âOh.â Â Jeremy frowns, and Nicoleâs eyes flick toward Waverly for a moment before looking back at himagain.
âBut the main thing isâŚâ Her eyes soften a little, just like they always do when she talks aboutWaverly.  âThe main thing is knowing thatI donât have to face them alone anymore.â
âOh.â Â Jeremyâs browfurrows for a moment. Â He glances over atRobin and then back toward Nicole, and his cheeks flush red in thefirelight. Â âOh.â
Nicole chuckles again.
âI didnât just mean it like that,â she says, rolling her eyes playfully.
âOh,â Jeremy says again, like itâs the only word he knowsright now.  âGood.  Because we havenât⌠uh⌠you knowâŚâ  His hands are flailing around again.
âIâm gonna stop you right there,â Nicole says, shaking herhead before he can make things any more awkward.
âS-sorry,â he stutters, and she thinks he might be wishingfor Wynonna to put a bullet between his eyes with Peacemaker so that the floorwould swallow him whole.
âNo, itâs fine,â she says quickly.  âJust. Um⌠ What I meant was⌠ Now that I have you guys,â she gesturesaround the room, âa family⌠I knowthat Iâm not alone like I was when I was a kid.â
Jeremy raises a skeptical eyebrow at Wynonna, who seems tobe having and honest to god argument with the weather through the window rightnow.
âAnd you arenât, either,â Nicole says, getting his attentionas she squeezes his shoulder again. Â âAlone,I mean. Â You have us now. Â All of us.â She eyes Wynonna for a moment. Â âEventhe crazy drunk ones,â she mutters.
âYou really think so?â Jeremy asks, sounding somewherebetween hopeful and skeptical.
âI know so,â Nicole answers without hesitation. Â âYou remember that fire we talked about?â sheasks, tapping her finger to her chest, over her heart.
âYeah,â he says quietly, the hint of a grin tugging at thecorners of his mouth. Â He flattens hispalm against his own chest.
âDonât forget about it,â Nicole says seriously. Â âRemember that youâre as much a part of our fireas we are a part of yours.â
He nods his head vigorously, unable to fight the grin anylonger. Â
Nicole glances over to where Robin is still hovering nearthe fireplace. Â Heâs pacing slowly, keeping an eye on the stairs, but maintaining a respectable distance, notwanting to intrude. Â She catches his eyeand he stops moving, tilting his head slightly. She smiles and nods at him subtly, and she can see his entire body relaxat the gesture.
âWell,â she says, turning back to Jeremy. Â âItâs probably pretty close to midnight. Â You should go and get your guy. Â I think heâs waiting for you.â
Jeremy turns to look at Robin and gives him a little wavebefore looking back at Nicole.
âMy guyâŚâ he whispers, his eyes glazing over dreamily.  âHeâs myguy.â
âYes,â Nicole laughs. âHe is.â
Jeremy pushes himself up off the stairs, still a littleshaky, and nearly trips over his own feet during his first steps towardRobin. Â He stops and leans against therailing, gathering himself for a moment. Before taking another step, he looks back over at Nicole, opening andclosing his mouth a few times, though nothing actually comes out.
Nicole reaches up and pats his hand. Â She nods at him once, and watches the airrush out of his lungs. Â He pauses for afew more seconds before he finally finds his breath again.
âNicole⌠ Thanks,â isall he manages to say, but itâs enough.
âAny time,â she smiles back. âJust remember,â she adds, tapping her chest again, âyouâre not alone.â
He mirrors her movement, like heâs making a pledge, and thenhe turns in a hurry and shuffles over to Robin, who greats him by holding outone of his arms for Jeremy to slip under so that he can tuck himself into Robinâsside. Â Nicole watches them quietly for afew minutes until she feels Waverly approaching from her other side.
âHey, baby,â she says, letting Waverlyâs proximity chase thelast of the darkness from her own head.
âYouâre amazing,â Waverly says, plopping down on the stepnext to Nicole.
Nicole quirks a surprised eyebrow at her.
âYou are,â Waverly says, grabbing Nicoleâs hand and playingwith her fingers. Â âWhat you just did forhim? Â Youâre amazing.â
She feels the heat rising in her cheeks and ducks her head.
âWe justâŚâ  Sheglances up at Waverly.  âI get it.  What heâs going through.  Sort ofâŚâ
âI know you do, baby.â Waverly leans in and kisses Nicole lightly on the cheek. Â âIâm glad he has someone like you that he can talkto about it.â
Nicole takes a minute to survey the room. Â Robin and Jeremy have settled on the floor bythe fireplace, leaning back against the couch. Mama and Wynonna are huddled in the opposite corner, and though it givesNicole a slightly uneasy feeling, she decides not to dwell on it tonight. Â She and Waverly have a rare moment ofprivacy, and she takes advantage of it, reaching out to tip Waverlyâs chin upuntil she can kiss her properly for the first time in several hours.
âAlright, mothers and fuckers,â Wynonna yells suddenly, andNicole groans at her uncanny ability to interrupt. Â âWeâre on the final countdown to midnight, and then I get to make out with this whiskey bottle like itâs 1999.â
Wynonna watches the seconds tick down on her phone, and theyall join in on the countdown. Â EvenMama. Â
True to her word, Wynonna shoves her tongue as far into thebottle as she can get it, but Nicole ignores her, finding Waverlyâs lips andallowing herself to get lost in the moment, despite the amount of hecklingcoming from the peanut gallery.
âWell,â Mama finally says, clearing her throat loudly.  âThereâs no way anyone is leaving in thisstorm, so it looks like weâre having a sleepover.â Her voice is tight, and Nicole takes a small amount of pleasure from her discomfort. âIâm sure yâall know where the blankets are inthis house better than I do.â
âYeah.  And the wallsare stupid thin,â Wynonna grumbles, glaring directly at Waverly andNicole.  âSo if me and Mr. Jack Danielshear anything that will scar us for life, coming from any of youâŚâ  She swings thebottle around, pointing it at both couples. âThen I will make sure itâs yourshoes I vomit in.  Capiche?â
âGoodnight,Wynonna,â Waverly says, rolling her eyes and dragging Nicole up the stairs.
Maybe things will be fine after all.

Starting off with some Nicole/Jeremy BROTP, that was originally written for @darienplays6688.
This one also makes some references to a previous fic in this series, called Gimme That Fire (Burn, Burn, Burn). You certainly donât need to read it to understand this one, but it wouldnât hurt if you want to pick up on the subtle callbacks.
