"when we're alone together, the colonel calls me Riza" is so iconic that it's cruel to everything else out there
Except for her next line, "I lied." Which honestly beats it.

The quickest way to figure out if someone didnā€™t pay attention while watching Fullmetal Alchemist, is to ask them what they think about the Mustang and Envy scene
If they say something like ā€œthey shouldā€™ve killed Envy, he didnā€™t deserve mercyā€ they are so far removed from the show itā€™s comical. Theyā€™ve forgotten what the scene was even about and are now making arguments based on their own false memories. The scene was never about mercy. Riza herself says sheā€™ll kill Envy then and there. The scene is about Mustang specifically being the one to kill Envy (this one genuinely annoys me because Iā€™ve seen it so much)
If they say something like ā€œRiza, Ed, and Scar were stupid for stopping Roy. Envy deserved to sufferā€ also donā€™t understand the further context in that they werenā€™t really stopping him for Envyā€™s sake. They were stopping Mustang for his own sake. Because torturing and killing someone for a personal grudge is one HELL of a slippery slope, that Mustang himself NEVER wanted to fall down (although, out of all these arguments, this is the one that I understand the most)
If they say something like ā€œitā€™s stupid that Riza was going to kill Mustang just to stop him from torturing Envyā€, they DIDNā€™T PAY ATTENTION TO THE FORESHADOWING AND THE REST OF THE SHOW. Roy tells Riza specifically that, if he were to EVER stray from the correct path, he wanted her to shoot him with her own hands. This is explicitly stated in the show word for word
This scene is not Ed, Riza, and Scar being pretentious. This scene is them holding Mustang to his own morals, that he himself was willing to die for if he abandoned them

Okay. It's been a hot second since I watched FMA and I've been meaning to revisit. BUT. Something that always got to me, watching it, was Ed and Al's youth and their relationship to the military and power? Does that... that might be too vague. But is that something you can work with?
Ohhhhhh, that is SUCH a juicy topic and I probably can't even begin to touch up on all of it... but let's get started, shall we?
Sometimes that I always deeply loved (and found horribly frustrating) is how convincing Ed and Al are written as teenagers. Genius teenagers, maybe, but teenagers nonetheless. We see this wonderfully in the very first episode of the anime, when Isaac McDougal (what a delightful name) tells them that there's something wrong with the country, that the military is involved in that, and Ed literally tells him "I don't care. You have a philosopher's stone, right?".
Like.
WOW.
Plot of the whole show could be over right then and there if Ed had only stopped to listen. But, of course, that's not what a teenager would do, especially one so guiltridden he can only see his incredibly selfish goal right in front of him.
We are at the beginning of the story, after all, and there needs to be some room for character development.
But Ed and Al never quite lose that selfish, teenage viewpoint even as they grow (Ed comparing the bombing of Resembool with the genocide of Ishval to Major Miles' face, Ed throwing a hissy fit when they join forces with Scar even though Winry has made peace with it, Al sounding all of five years old when he repeats "Hughes moved to the countryside" like a child whose favorite animal just "ran away") but they do grow. Considerably.
They were always good kids. They always had an inane sense of fairness. But by the end of it, that sense of fairness has grown beyond them and their immediate surroundings. They can see farther than just themselves and Winry and the handful of people they call friends.
By the end of if their good deeds changed enough in the hearts of the Amestrian people to allow a certain degree of unity.
But how does that relate to power and the military?
Now, you see, Amestris is presented to us as a military state and we quite often get the sense that the military is the most common career path available to most of the country. At least if you want to eat. Somehow the Amestrian military has to feed all these endless wars after all, and that only happens if people join up voluntarily.
And it only happens if the benefits are good enough.
Which is exactly how Roy gets them. He dangles hope in front of their small, traumatized faces and makes it quite clear that the military is the only way to get what they want.
They need research materials, power, and the oversight of the state. They get all that by Ed joining up with the State Alchemists programme. As a civilian, all of that would be restricted and inaccessible to him.
But -- even in the beginning -- Ed never really identifies with his identity as a Dog of the Military beyond his title. He, in odds to all other State Alchemists, is known as Hero of the People, because while the rest of the Amestrian military exploits and the State Alchemists break with their promise of "be thou for the people" Ed and Al do give back. They do help. They do free towns from corrupt military officials, they do fight terrorists on trains, they do fix a street vendor's broken radio.
Ed is uncomfortable with the power he theoretically holds. When Maria Ross and Danny Brosh call him "sir" and use his official rank, Ed asks them to just call him Ed, saying that he's nothing special. We never once see him lever his status as "major" over any of the lower ranking officers. Later, we see him desert with no regards to his future career, and by the end we know he quit because the military was only ever a means to an end. And he reached that end. He reached his goal.
Ed never shows respect for authority figures (but he does salute Hughes once, so he must have had some formal training on how to behave), he doesn't claim the power he is theoretically owed beyond the independence it allows him, he has no invested interest in the politics of it all (even though he is aware of them), and he actively fights the corruption within the military when personally affected by it (even if he is way too selfish in the beginning to see the bigger question).
And both he and Al hate killing. They seem to accept it as a part of a soldier's job -- their problem isn't death, I don't think, considering how unbothered they are by dead bodies throughout the show - but the act itself is so abhorrent to them, that they try to stop even tangentially related murder plots simply because they want no part in it. It is naive -- the show tells us so. Many of its characters tell us so.
But.
But it is also a reclamation of Ed's agency. And it is hope for the future. Because Ed knows that he has become a Dog of the Military, he knows -- on some level -- that he's just sold his soul to a monster far bigger than him, but he will keep this one part of his innocence for himself. He will not kill in the name of the Amestrian government.
And you know what? Riza Hawkeye is impressed with him for that. Because she pulled the trigger when ordered to, and Ed is her hope for the future. Because he is the next generation. And he refuses to do what she once did.
(I think it is interesting to investigate under which circumstances Ed would kill and how that would influence his character and what would be the consequences of that, but for the sake of the show itself, I think it is a wonderful visualization of the world healing beyond what Riza and Roy and Armstrong and Marcoh and Kimblee did to it)
Now, how does that all tie together?
Well, I think it is Ed's youth that allows him to disregard much of the military's power over his life, and it is his stubborn teenage-ness that allows both him and Al to hold so steadfast to their ideals, be that the selfish goal of self-realization or the refusal to kill. Not once does either character strive for power, and even at the end of the series, once they're all grown up, we see them long for a simple life. For interesting travels, good food, family, and a future worth living.
The military is a tool, for Ed and Al - because the military state ensured that they would have to use it.
It is interesting, really, because Roy joined up because he believed the propaganda, and once he recruits the Elrics he's been firmly broken by that belief -- and the Elrics join up even though they distrust the military (the Rockbells seem firmly anti-military all things considered) simply because it offers the resources they need.
If Ed was any other protagonist this would be a very different story, because they handed a twelve-year old a whole lot of power and a pretty high-up rank and the worst he did was blow up a few buildings and buy ugly clothes.
This is probably not at all what you expected, but... well, you successfully activated my rambling button! AND MANY THANKS FOR THAT!!! <3 <3 <3

I knew all along that your icon was a picture of Roy and Hughes from FMA, but somehow still Mandelaā€™d myself every time I looked at it into thinking it was Dan and Phil. I donā€™t even watch Dan and Phil.
My only evidence that Dan and Phil exist and are people is from a) occasional posts showing up in Danny Phantom tags due to shared words like "Phan" and "Phandom" and b) people on tumblr telling me they thought my icon was Dan and Phil.
I'm partially convinced Dan and Phil is some kind of tumblr specific psy-op. These men do not exist outside of a very specific subset of tumblr users dedicated to telling me my profile is these two guys.

Force Anime on a Friend/Mutual/Stranger
I'm confident enough in my binge-watching abilities to estimate that I will likely finish Assassination Classroom at least by this time tomorrow, so let's get the next poll running.
If you are new here, I love anime, but I'm bad at finishing series, starting series, and making choices, so I let the latter fall to Tumblr - I throw a couple shows into a poll and let y'all have at it.
As always, propaganda* (*semi-coherent rambling) below the poll. You are allowed and encouraged to reblog if you think you can bully your followers into voting for your pick. Other people's followers and strangers of Tumblr, you do not have to know me, follow me, like me, or even really like anime if you wanna push a button - we solely accept "I like pressing buttons" as a poll strategy here.
Propaganda:
A Note About Long Series - For our beloved super-fucking-long series, I break them up by season/arc/however-they're-divided for the purpose of these polls. We play it by ear, and how much I will watch is specified here in the propaganda.
Rambles:
Fairy Tail - Here's the thing: I have no fucking clue where I left off and I only remember a chunk of the arcs or very memorable episodes (and lots of the fillers - I like them being happy and goofy ok?). I MIGHT have been just starting the Tenrou Island arc but god knows at this point. So, uh, for the purpose of this poll, "finish" isn't the most accurate word... I'm just gonna go around again and actually keep track this time. This poll option will cover a rewatch of Season 1 of Fairy Tail.
Horimiya: The Missing Pieces - I've said it before and I'll keep saying it: Izumi was hottest in the first handful of episodes with the hair and the piercings. They un-emoed my boy and I'm Upset.
The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. - I love Saiki K, but I've only seen every episode dubbed by Jerry Jewell specifically. I have not seen the non-dubbed, and I have not watched Reawakened yet. I know many of you enjoy those regardless (and wish and pine and hope for an official dub). I know they're worth it. This is your chance to make me watch it - I know I will enjoy it. I just miss my emotional support voice actor.
Chainsaw Man - Pros: chainsaw demons, fucking banger of an OP, dog (who is the chainsaw demon).
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - I'm gonna make all you weebs real mad here for a second. I have not seen FMA nor FMA:B. I've absorbed the relevant cultural knowledge through internet osmosis, but that's it. I do know Many Things such as the dog for instance. I just have not sat down and watched it proper. This is your opportunity to correct one of my many anime sins. Godspeed.
The Case Study of Vanitas - Vampires and steampunk is soooooo my thing. Plus, I'll get to watch another Danny Motta reaction series after this so even better. Show of hands in the tags if we love Danny Motta (that means reblog this, cowards šŸ”«).

do you have any voice headcanons for Antares? how they talk, stuff like that?
Okay well hereā€™s the characters that I think would keep the voices similar to what they have in show, because the performances given were excellent and really defined the character to me. The cadence, the tone, all that, these ones work well.
Winter, Ironwood, Tyrian, Watts, Salem, Hazel, Oscar, Ozpin, the Ace Ops are all solid, Robyn, Whitley, Sienna, Raven, Mercury, Vernal.
So here's the ones I'd mess with:
Ruby: Iā€™d want to still have her sound light and innocent, but Iā€™d definitely make her way less squeaky then she was in the show. A voice that can still have a bit of grit, if she needs it. Iā€™m picturing something like Dani Phantom in Danny Phantom, or X-23 in x-men evolution (Andrea Libmanā€™s version). Childish but able to get dangerous.
Weiss: definitely something posh but not necessarily snooty. She should have a very clear voice, one thatā€™s clearly been through a million dictation lessons and speaks quite musically at that. Pick a soprano broadway singer, go from there.
Blake: I think sheā€™d probably have the deepest voice of the main four girls? Not raspy, but resonant. Able to soften up, I picture something like Vi from Arcane or Korra from Legend of Korra.
Yang: Not as deep as Blakeā€™s voice, but definitely with a bit of grit to it that gives her that tough vibe. Where Blake has resonance, Yang does have rasp. Sorta Ryuko Matoi-esque, or like Amethyst from Steven Universe.
Qrow: as much as I like Jason Liebrechtā€™s work I donā€™t think he works quite as well for Qrow, which is not anything against him just the voice doesnā€™t fit as much as Iā€™d prefer. Iā€™ve always felt Qrow should have a voice with a deeper register anyway, so Iā€™d be picking a performance like Wolverine from X-Men Evolution, or Ghazan, Legend of Korra.
Sun: I really like Lego Monkie Kid and all the voice actors are great, I just canā€™t decide if Sun gets MKā€™s voice (younger, peppy, excited, also Sokka) or Monkey Kingā€™s (equally peppy, a little more deep, a bit tricksy, also Goku).
Ilia: I think Cherami Leighā€™s voice acting is great (maybe she can be Blake?) but my Ilia is a bit younger and a lot softer so Iā€™d want her to have more of a higher voice, to contrast Antares-Blakeā€™s lower register. Something that still cracks, a bit like Luz from Owl House, mayhaps, or Marcy from Amphibia.
Summer: if any of you have watched Critical Role 3 Bells Hells and have listened to Ashley Johnsonā€™s voice for Fearne, thatā€™s it exactly. Really soft and breathy and gentle, really distinctive from the rest of the cast.
Tortuga: Tortuga had a very deep voice compared to the other Ace Ops, but not gravelly. Not quite on the levels of like, James Earl Jones, but more like Keith Davids in his Dr Facilier role, able to be quick but with gravitas.
Cinder: needs to be huskier, definitely able to have charisma behind it rather than risking sounding childish, or whiny. I picture something like Meg from Hades or Lust from FMA.
Jaune: I think heā€™d have one of the higher pitched voices of the male cast? Definitely a tenor, speaks fast and nervously, I picture kinda like Martin Blackwoodā€™s voice from the Magnus Archives (I have no idea what anyoneā€™s accents are and I donā€™t want to think about it), or Rocky from Lackadaisy.
Nora: super high pitched and nasally, but really sweet and cute nonetheless. Iā€™d say kinda like, Molly from Epithet Erased, or Ivy, Lackadaisy again.
Pyrrha: I think she should have the most standard teenager voice? She deserves it, she deserves normal and not exceptional. I picture, like Gwen Stacy from Spiderverse, or Wendy from Gravity Falls?
Ren: a very subdued, almost monotone voice, its not necessarily particularly low or high, but could totally drop down to something very menacing if pushed. Iā€™m thinking, like, a chilled out version of Percy from Vox Machina, with that same ability to go right down into a danger zone.
Emerald: what if we took Cherami Leigh's Ilia voice and just moved it here what then? Other options I think would suit her would be something like Miriam from Dragon Age (Kimberly Brooks is always a win)
Penny: If Nora was high pitched I think Penny should sound like a literal child, on account of Pietro really leaning into the 'innocent little girl' thing when he was downloading voice clips to make into her synthesizer- or, hear me out: Penny voiced by a vocaloid.

it never occurred to me how fucking funny phantom planet liveblogs would be. mutuals if you ever watch danny phantom.you don't need to liveblog the whole thing but I NEED to see your reactions to phantom planet. you know that genre of post where like. people are watching fma for the first time and go "aww puppy ^_^" and then reblog it with the most haunted image when they finish the episode. that's what phantom planet liveblogs are like to me. "surely it can't be that bad" >> "oh this fucking sucks"

Roy agreeing not to try and save Riza when she asked him not to. Roy accepted that Riza wished him to burn the horrific secrets tattooed onto her skin. Riza who had that put on her in the first place, and I sincerely doubt she had much of a choice Or comprehension of what it really meant. The same Riza who is forced to work for Wrath as a hostage, as she can't say no.
Roy, ironically as her superior officer, is the only one who obeys her commands. Respects her wishes even if it does him harm.
These two kill me so much

I joined the YGO fandom last year. This show is now pushing 20 years old, but i am impressed by how much is still happening in it. New art, new fic. There are active blogs I can follow, and older blogs I can stalk through. Years and years of love for the show that keep building.
But other, more recent shows? I follow character tags and they don't have nearly as much new content as #atem or #puzzleshipping. They blazed, oh they blazed, and I blazed with them. I wrote 80k focused on Viktor hargreeves in 6 weeks. And now that tag on average fills my dash maybe twice a week while ygo stuff appears daily. The new toh episode dropped, and it only filled my dash for a day.
Bbc Merlin. FMA. PJO. Danny Phantom. These are my forever fandoms, because they're always there and they are still alive. They're also all older. I hesitate to say all the fans are older, but i wouldn't be surprised if a chunk of what keeps it going are 30+ folks. Those of us who have less free time and are selective about what we sink into. Who remember how things were stretched out, or perhaps know just now how to savor things (it's been 4 months, i still haven't finished watching ygo). But I like lingering. It's peaceful, it's healthy, and i think a better form of fandom love because you build a lot more for something you love.
Not people saying ā€œFandom has always been like thisā€ in that vent post I made. No. It hasnā€™t always been like this. Fandom has NEVER been like this until recently and if you were in fandom pre-tumblr purge, pre-twitter, pre-netflix boom, pre-tiktokā€¦.then you would fucking know it was nothing like this.
We still had the drive to create. We still sold prints and charms and made zinesā€¦but it was never like this.
The introduction of streaming, binge shows that drop all at once, tiktok and vine RIP i still love u vine but you were the beginning of a particularly ugly era) creating this bite sized, quick paced ā€˜contentā€™ era of creation and it bled out into fucking everything else.
Fandoms didnā€™t die down when the show ended or the season was over. You didnā€™t mass unfollow artist, writers or moots just because they changed fandoms. There wasnā€™t this need to please the algorithm in order for your posts to get seen by people and enjoyed.
Fandoms used to last YEARS. Star Trek is literally the oldest running fandom out there and you got people in there that could care less about the new stuff and still have been happily prancing through their fucking fifty year old fandom today. Hell, even SPN after all itā€™s fuckups and shitshows has a dedicated fanbase STILL creating tons of art and fic.
There is no patience anymore. No calm feeling of taking in fandom and friends at a pace that which doesnā€™t make you stressed and is still fun.
Do I blame fandom for this? Of course not, but people are complacent with it and start changing their vocab to accommodate and end up making the situation so deep it cant be fixed.
We call Art & Fic Content now, completely stripping the value of what it is to a level of consumerism instead of personal entertainment & community bonding.

Characters that I hc as autistic:
-Dick Grayson. Itā€™s mostly just the vibes. I look at this man and my brain turns on sirens. WEEWOOWEEWOO THIS MAN IS AUTISTIC
-Clint Barton. (the fraction one) ((though honestly it fits most versions of him))
-Sans (and Papyrus). Look at those funky little guys with their safe foods and favorite clothes
-Charlie from Hazbin Hotel. I havenā€™t watched the show but I can feel the vibes from the clips alone.
-Abby from NCIS. The hyperfocus. The emotional support stuffie. The blasting music. I could go on.
-Pidge from Voltron. *gestures dramatically with both hands*
-Danny Fenton. That child has autistic for a middle name
-Izuku Midoriya is The autistic kid ever. Also Iida.
-Honestly just like all the main characters of FMA/FMAB. I canā€™t pick one. The alphabet was kinda just splattered all over the lot of em
-Ahsoka Tano. Iā€™d recognize that brand of reasoning anywhere.
-Prince Euden. (From Dragalia Lost RIP)

watching Danny Motta Anime Reactions has become a way to like. relive a bunch of anime I've watched and loved already, and maybe don't feel like rewatching alone. I'm watching his FMA: Brotherhood series right now, and it's wild watching someone experience Fulmetal Alchemist blind. I literally started the series in 2003 which is not intended as like some kind of "before it was cool" brag, because I feel like FMA hit the ground running, like I literally don't think there was ever a "before" with FMA, it was always cool and always a hit for as long as there was awareness of it. There's no way to really have that superiority because it's like... so hype that anyone who's gonna be into it kinda just needs to give it a long enough to chance to get into it and they're trapped, the only problem is that sometimes it gets so hype that people will avoid it due to the hype. Which is valid. Sometimes you can kill interest with hype harder than apathy.
Like the harder people recommend something the less you wanna watch it. that's a valid situation. It can be one of the best things in the world, but just because so many people love it can be the reason you have trouble watching it. That's been one of my main struggles watching Twin Peaks. I wanna but so many people love it so much that I just feel overwhelmed by it. (Plus it's now exclusively on Paramount+ and I feel like I should buy a box set instead and just have physical media, but I'm apathetic to spending money on it when I've been trepidatious to actually commit watching it.)
But watching FMA:B clips with the commentary of someone watching it for the first time is kinda bringing back that joy of having watched it for the first time. Even knowing Ed's VA is a creep I used be a fan of and met multiple times at conventions because I was a teen and that was a thing... That's something I can just purge from my memory because I'm watching through someone else's perspective. What early 2000s anime culture of that one voice actor being just the worst continuing for way too long? It's settled now maybe. I don't want to think about it. aaaaaaaaa
I'm going to think about Everything Else Instead. I wish I could take Romi Park from the Japanese version and everything else from the dub. I really enjoy dubs. I'm a sucker for dubs and weird localizations. I'm not sorry for that. I do think there are some things that are wrong for localizers to do, but some of the weird shit people complain about that are just quirks of dialogue or Westernization that still leaves the sub a completely valid option to turn to if you want that for the original interpretation I think is really fun. Dubs are for a Western Audience and will often have quirks and shit for a Western Audience that stays loyal in tone and subject, but adapts language usage and dialogue for a more natural feeling. "Bitches, Bros and Nonbinary hoes" is fine. I think Simulcast is hindering some of the intricacies of the localization process because it's like rush and crunch. but like... it's not "progressivisim" ruining anime. It's rush jobs and lack of research time. And maybe sometimes the fact that people have really strict views of gender that allows only for a binary of "Male or Female" so that one book about a man who expresses himself in female dress became a book about a trans woman because the localizer themselves had a strict binary view of gender roles and specifically made an error in interpretation which has caused a lot of problems based entirely on the fact that now there's a bunch of bullshit about gender roles getting argued when nobody has all the information and half the people having the argument are arguing over the actual gender queer people trying to point out that they would really rather not be the subject of your heated debate about whether femboy is a slur. like literally just be normal. We thought we were past whether it was okay for a boy to wear a dress but now suddenly that boy needs to be a girl and that's a lot of pressure and the opposite of like. what we wanted with the whole like. freedom of expression thing. that's not regressive. But that was like. One issue that got blown up way too big. Same with that one line about the Patriarchy in Dragon Maid. like.
Shit. It's a single fucking line that landed a little poorly. like. yeah it doesn't really work for the character. And some of the like. SJW stuff is a little clumsy but like... the way some people bitch about it online it's like localizers are just makin' anime all super 2012 tumblr discourse machines. But for the most part it's just... uh. Localized. Surprise. They make local references that's what localization is for. sometimes it hits, sometimes it misses. that's how it works. maybe you should watch some old ADV localizations and maybe you'll calm down. Those were fucking batshit and I loved them. Everyone talks about High School of the Dead's improbably titty physics, but what about it's fucking insane dub. "This is Dolce and Gabbana, you bitch!" or whatever that bitch's line was. Old School Dubs were wild, embrace chaos. It's fun.
Though I do prefer if they just use Japanese honorific systems. Whenever Japanese honorific systems try to get translated to something else it never works. It's a system that just doesn't translate to English well. Also sometimes with names I will give up pronunciation for sentence flow. I know that sounds blasphemous but sometimes when actors try too hard for pronunciation you can feel it like someone badly trying to shift gears in an automatic car. like they suddenly shift into a different language mid sentence and it's like... mmm should've practuced satubg tgat naturally in an English sentence a few more times because we went to a different tonal range for that one. like how if there's an English borrow word in Japanese they don't say it like an English word, they say it like a Japanese word? like... Sometimes you gotta figure out a way to work those syllables into an English sentence without breaking flow. I dunno how but it just hits like a truck when it doesn't. But that's my weird anime dub pet peeve.

"Was this part of the episode cut out of Danny Motta's reaction video or did I just completely forget I ever saw it?" A novel, by me while watching fma lol
