Just when I think I'm out, Riichi City pulls me back in

Riichi City sure as hell knows how to keep me playing their goddamn Mahjong.

First the "Mahjong Ronpa" Danganronpa crossover event, and now a Steins;Gate crossover storyline, TOO?!

I'm only on Chapter 2 of the story, which requires you to play Mahjong games to earn "Dr. Riichi" (*cough*) cola to fuel Okabe's movement around a game board that slowly unlocks cut scenes which further the story. The circumstances are similar to the Danganronpa event, though: The visiting characters find themselves thrown into a totally new world, though at least they seem to have some understanding of the cause this time around. That cause being, of course, the latest "Future Gadget" that they were futzing around with. Regardless, the bizarre Mahjong-centric reality they've landed in baffles them.... and of course, they want to find a way home.

Of note is that initially, we only see Okabe, Kurisu, and Mayuri. I don't know when Suzuha will join the party.

Annnd Junko has already gotten to Mikan.

I'll say it makes way more sense to me that someone would join Junko.

Than so done wanting to join Munakata.

Junko's cruel but she's very good at making someone feel like she cares about them. She finds people who the world ignores or belittles and is able to get them to trust her.

And she'll build them up as much as she'll shatter them, and it'll get to the point they depend on her.

Much like Mukuro.

While Munakata has these big ideas but he screams of entertainment. Like first game Byakuya if he never developed or made any friends.

People who think the world owes them a favour.

The fact Munakata managed to get a hold of two people who adore and would lay down their lives for him, is insane.

Gotta wonder what the hell he did to them. Because that is not healthy nor normal.

I think it's interesting because he and Junko are very similar individuals, in terms of how they view and treat others for their own goals.

Anyway, back to this.

How many fics have you worked on since January? Apparently I have worked on 7 different fics since the start of this year. Not bad, not bad.

What’s something new that you tried in a fic this year? Uhhh… not sure, honestly. I don’t think I tried anything new, really? Not that I can think on the top of my head, at least,

What piece of media inspired you the most? (This can be the fandom you wrote the most for, the one that spawned the most ideas, the one you thought about the most, etc.) Well, the fandom that I’ve written for the most has been Danganronpa, obviously, since I have like… 14 fics written for Danganronpa, all Ishimondo in nature. Which is the most I’ve written for any fandom, even more than HP back when I was a kid, I think??? Maybe. Maybe not, who knows.

What ships captured your heart? Deadclaws/whatever the ship name for Deadpool and Wolverine is (I forget the other name for it, oops. It’s late sorry). Ishimondo, but that’s been in my heart for years now.

Did you write for any new fandoms or ships this year? Deadpool, yeah. I never wrote for Deadpool before, though I’ve been a fan since 2016.

And I thought it was going to die there until I got the inspiration to finally finish it this year. And now it’s complete and it meant so so much to me to finish it.

What fic made you feel the happiest to work on? Same as last.

What fic was the most difficult to write? Dinner Disaster since it was just… bad. I didn’t like it while writing it, but it was for an event and was under a time crunch and just… kept at it. And I didn’t have time to really fix it. Overall, it was just a bad time, oof.

What fic was the easiest to write? As if Sorrow Were Your Friend. It was one of the saddest fics I’ve ever written, but it was easy in that it came to me quickly and was written fast and edited quickly. Super sad and heart breaking, but I really loved it. I also wrote it for an event, but I had the idea for it immediately and it didn’t feel forced like Dinner Disaster did.

What were your shortest and longest fics posted this year? Shortest is As if Sorrow Were Your Friend, longest (that was posted entirely this year) is Best for Last, though I didn’t write that entirely this year. I did post that entirely this year, though, since I never posted it before this year.

What were your go-to writing songs? None? I just put on my full playlist when writing?

What was the hardest fic to title? Dinner Disaster, but that was the hardest to write, so it makes sense it was the hardest to title too.

Share your favorite opening line He stands before the monumental, cathedral like gate, body as stiff and still as stone, like he’s done every other time he’s visited this place before.

Share your favorite ending line As Taka lies down to sleep that night, separated from his beloved boyfriend by only a thin row of pillows, heart calm and still in his chest for once… he has a moment to think that perhaps there’s something to be had for Secret Santa gift exchanges, after all.

Share your favorite piece of dialogue “Language, Kuwata-kun! Such foul language is not tolerated in a school environment! If I hear such filth from you again, I will not hesitate to give you detention for the rest of the week!” Mondo claims, not looking away from Leon even as he and Taka reach the table at last. 

Share your funniest line Okay, now that’s a hard one, and one I cannot really say. I have a hard time telling if something is actually funny, or if I just think something is funny in the moment. Also, I just took my sleeping pills and am super tired, ha. I’d say prolly something in my fic Wearing Your (not) Boyfriend’s Clothes, since that was my attempt at a more humorous fic, ha.

What's something that surprised you while you were working on a fic? Did it change the story? I mean… before writing As if Sorrow Were Your Friend, I hadn’t expected it to be sad. Or to write it really. It was for an Ishimondo week even thingy, and the day it was for was Sickness and Promise, and I was like “ha wouldn’t it suck if Taka died or something and Mondo promised to live on or something???” and I was like “……… ohno.” And by then half of it was already written so…….

What writing programs did you use? Did you write by hand? I wrote it on my phone using a notes app. Not the apple notes app, since it sucks. It’s a notes app that I found after the apple notes app started glitching years ago. It’s called like… notes+ or something? No, n+otes. It works decently for me. Then I copy and paste it to word and edit it using Microsoft word on my desktop, since it’s easier.

If you had to choose one, what was THE most satisfying writing moment of your year? Uh… finishing Best for Last, I guess. I almost never finish WIPs once I abandon them, so it was so nice to actually finish one for once.

Did you do anything special to celebrate finishing a fic? No? Not really, I just… feel happy, I guess?

How did you recharge between fics? Do nothing? Do people recharge between fics???

Did you create fanworks other than fic? I don’t think so? I used to draw, but I don’t think I drew this year, since it hurts my shoulders. I also don’t think I did any fandom related crafts… hm… something to consider for the new year.

How many events did you take part in? (bangs, exchanges, ship weeks, zines, prompt memes, they all count!) Just the one, but it was more that I’ve done in the past! I don’t usually participate in events, and I learned why, since the organizer of the event was not very nice and we got into an argument, and it was not fun. :-)

If this were an awards show, who would you thank? Uhh… the people who follow me regularly and who comment on my fics. I’d specifically name names, but I don’t want to call anyone out if they don’t want me to, and I don’t want to accidentally forget anyone and make them feel bad, so I won’t name names. But please know I do appreciate everyone who regularly interacts with my works!! You guys are the all-stars and keep me going, you really do. <3

What's left on your to-do list for 2024? Hopefully post chapter 16 of Luigi and the Beast…

What would you like to write next year? More of Luigi and the Beast… Otherwise I don’t really know, honestly. Maybe something for the Witcher, which I’ve been really into the last few weeks? Depends on if the new season comes out soon, and how Liam Hemsworth is as Geralt. I haven’t seen anyone really interested in the Witcher lately, which is understandable considering the recent seasons have been, uh, not great, but I do like it, ha.

Go away, come again another day (Ch. 1: It roars)

Fandom: Danganronpa AU: Medieval/Fantasy AU Links to Chapters 2 and 3 Summary: The kingdom's people do their best to get through the day. The storm rages on regardless.

It’s quite common for children to ask if the clouds are alive. Understandable too. They dig their heels into the curve of the sky for all inquiring minds to see, leaving questionable footprints of fluff. They weep and drool down on the creatures below them, drops seeping into bones only to erode and stain. They call off the show eventually. Once the child forgets about them. That's when they move on, to con the youth of another land. Or inspire, if that’s how you see it.

And that is how you’d see it, isn’t it now? Only someone invested in this mortifying game of pretend would find the childlike wonder in looking up at the clouds on a hill too close to the sun. Only you still see the messy shapes.

The children are wrong, as they so often are, in the technical alone. Sure, the white they see in the sky may be funeral white, but I, I in my howling gray, am ruefully alive.

I bleed red that brightens the cozy brown of a town square, shaded cobblestone barely visible through the flooding translucent red. The impending stain and its eternal stick will squish against the wriggling toes of barefoot, scampering children. Lest their parents throw up their hands and upheave the roads, of course.

They won’t, if they know what’s good for them.

And they do. Only workers and their cleverness keep a town like that so put together. Only its heroics could keep the rival kingdom’s festering cruelty at bay. No royal could, and certainly not you.

In the image of the hell you dangle right in front of their sniffing noses, I strike the air with the light of the pearly gates. It denies you the privilege of human comprehension, tugging the inflamed sky towards me. 

No skin off your bared teeth anyhow. Why would any witnesses question me when just saying my name fills them with the terror of the lord and the dread of the devil?

...No, not you. You inspire no dread. Only companionship. How sickeningly human of you.

The thud of your father’s blessed bible against your head makes for excellent thunder, in my all-knowing opinion. No match, however, for the torched screams of your mother on her deathbed, infected with the poison in your veins, howling from deep within me. Those who haven’t taken shelter in the sturdy palace walls and the open arms of their queen and her favorite* daughter wonder in pure horror who that angel whistling in their ears is.

But you know. I give you no choice in the matter.

You curse me as garish as you pull your dear wolf-boy closer, his trembling claws digging into your skin as you shush his mortified whimpers. But that’s not fair, now is it? Perhaps your ostentatious demonic persona wore itself out, melting into your skin, the oils seeping into your brain. Why else call the kettle stormy black now, of all times? Surely you must understand.

I’ve the right to be this. To be the biggest, most awful, most tragic storm in human history, as your king declared me.

You will tend to the shaken nerves of your friends in the wake of your absence, to the wounded and frightened animals of your forest domain. You will weep for it's dead. You will offer the wolf in your arms comfort and an even tighter embrace at the sight of his caped statue in the castle garden, one with the dirt and bloodier than his wolf form has ever rumored to be. You will caress his cheek and kiss his cheek in the closest thing to intimacy you know how to give.

You pretend to rule hell, to claim it as its dark overlord, or whatever corny nonsense you call yourself these days.

I am hell. Elusive, picky, and to you, inrulable.

Spike Chunsoft seems to be giving Rain Code one hell of a marketing budget. (Presumably especially because it’s a Kodaka game) unfortunately I don’t think they’re going a super good job with it bc of how lame Spike Chunsoft trailers are to they’re games. Dunno how successful it will be, seeing as well…it’s not exactly a DR op despite looking like it, but hopefully it will leave a bigger impact than World’s End Club did.

Those interviews also mention that they had a much higher production budget on this as compared to Danganronpa. So that's even more reason to be concerned that this lands.

World's End Club was glitchy and was published by a much smaller, lower-budget company than SC. I'm not sure Izanagi Games really has had any "hits," per se. Plus the team was working in a genre they largely hadn't played around with before.

So here's hoping that, with a more firmly established team doing a lot of things that they're already good at, we'll get something a lot less glitchy and a lot more successful. But how much success will they need to justify the cost of production and marketing?? Because... yeah, this isn't going to come out of the gate with Danganronpa V3-type numbers. No way.

Then again, DR was initially a slow-burn success... maybe that's all we need to hope for right now. It's a new IP, after all. Hopefully Kodaka's writing is the secret sauce that'll carry this one into profitability?

For the record, I largely enjoy SC's trailers, but I'm also already in the tank for this thing. Tthey're definitely not very informative as to what kind of gameplay you're getting. So I don't know how effective they are for outsiders.... but yeah, probably not too much.
