Hoe hiphop albums de hitparade killen... en er extra hits voor teruggeven

Ed Sheeran deed het. En daarna Josylvio, Boef en nu Lil’ Kleine weer: de Spotify chart killen met albumtracks…

Zaterdag stonden alle elf tracks van het nieuwe Lil’ Kleine album Alleen respectievelijk op #1, #2, #7, #9, #10, #12, #13, #15, #20, #21 en #25 in de Nederlandse Spoify chart. Samen goed voor iets meer dan twee miljoen streams op de eerste dag. Je kunt Lil‘ Kleine opschepperig noemen in zijn raps, maar hij heeft het toch wel weer geflikt.

Wie had dat ooit gedacht, dat grote albums uiteindelijk de hitparade om zeep zouden helpen? Telt het album nog wel mee tegenwoordig, krijg je vaak de vraag. “Ja en nee” is daarop mijn antwoord. Bijjna niemand behalve de echte fans hebben nog tijd om hele albums uitgebreid van voor naar achter te beluisteren. In deze tijd van korte aandachtsspannes draaien we liever de losse hits achterelkaar. Maar wanneer er een album van een grote artiest uitkomt, is het een evenement, dat niet onopgemerkt aan de hitparade voorbij gaat…

Nee, dit effect zie je niet terug in de Nederlandse Top 40, die angstvallig vasthoudt aan de als single aangeboden tracks aan de mainstream media en daar een geheime formule op loslaat, waarin factoren als airplay worden meegewogen. Als hitparadenerd weet ik me nog wel de vrij schokkende lijsten te herinneren waarbij vers overleden artiesten als Elvis Presley, John Lennon of André Hazes veel meer dan twee plekken in de hitparade bezet houden. Want twee singles in de Top 40, daar is nog wel mee te leven: de vorige single, die op de weg terug is, en de nieuwe, die binnenstormt. Maar vier of meer tegelijk, da’s crazy. “Daar vinden we alweer André Hazes in de lijst”, zou de presentator dan quasi-verontschuldigend roepen, “Maar u begrijpt vast wel waarom…”.

Maar de Top 40 is al lang niet meer toonaangevend: het is een wekelijkse lijst, die achter de feiten aanloopt. De Spotify Top 50 is leading: je ziet de veranderingen op dagelijkse basis op grond van de kille streamingcijfers. Tegenwoordig is het zaterdagochtend reikhalzend uitkijken naar de update van de Spotify chart, omdat de meeste singles en albums vrijdag op Spotify komen, veelal meeliftend op de lijst met door Spotify geselecteerde nieuwe nummers, de New Music Friday NL (ruim 100.000 volgers). En de door hiphop liefhebbers veel gevolgde Woordenschat playlist (ruim 200.000 volgers), niet te vergeten.

Het mooiste is het nog als radiopluggers van andere acts zeggen: “Als je het album van X niet mee zou tellen, dan zou mijn plaatje keihard in de top 10 staan.” Maar je kunt het luisteren naar albumtracks in de Spotify charts niet tegenhouden. Het is een 1-op-1 weergave van wat er werkelijk geluisterd wordt. Als dagelijks ruim 100.000 luisteraars het nieuwe Lil’ Kleine album van voor naar achter uitchecken, staan al zijn albumtracks te pronken in de Spotify Top 50. De playlist Netherlands Top 50 heeft bijna 400.000 volgers en met die visibilty wakkert een plek in die lijst weer nieuwe plays aan.

Grote vraag is natuurlijk of er ook albumtracks bestaan, die buiten de traditionele media om blijven beklijven in de streaming wereld? Of zijn het allemaal tracks, die een weekje in de belangstelling staan vanwege het nieuwe album, en dan als een zeepbel uiteen spatten?

Daarom hieronder een overzicht van de tracks die momenteel in de top 200 van Spotify staan, die niet als losse single track aan de radio zijn aangeboden, gesorteerd naar het aantal streams in Nederland (bron: kworb.net):

Het eeste dat opvalt, is dat op singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran en danceact The Chainsmokers na het bijna allemaal Nederlandstalige hiphop acts zijn die goed scoren met hun albumtracks: Frenna, Boef en Josylvio staan allemaal met meerdere albumtracks in de lijst.

Om een indruk te geven over de aantallen, met 10 miljoen streams heb je bijna één van de honderd grootste Nederlandse streaminghits allertijden te pakken - Drake staat bovenaan in die lijst met One Dance met 42 miljoen Nederlandse streams, Ed Sheeran met The Shape Of You zit ‘m op de hielen met 37 miljoen. Een reguliere mainstream hit van nu, Symphony van Clean Bandit, zit ook op de 10 miljoen streams. Dus het zijn niet zomaar aantallen, die deze albumtracks halen.

Blijkt maar weer eens dat in online en streaming meerdere tracks van één artiest naast elkaar aandacht kunnen krijgen. Bij de radio ligt de focus het liefst op één enkele track per artiest tegelijk, met het oog op de herkenbaarheid van het nummer.

We zullen er dus mee moeten leven dat de Spotify Top 50 eens in de zoveel weken ‘vervuild’ is met vele albumtracks van dezelfde artiest. Grote albums killen de hitparade tegenwoordig. Wie graag een lijstje gehad had met een overzicht welke verschillende acts allemaal aan de hand zijn, kan dat heel makkelijk zelf maken, door het copieren van de Spotify Top 50 en daarna de dubbele acts er zelf uit te vissen. Maar dan ontken je wel dat een grote albumrelease wel degelijk een muzikaal evenement is - en de beste albumtracks worden er na een paar weken gewoon uitgefilterd. Voila, gratis extra hits op een presenteerblaadje. Moderne tijden!
