SATURDAY MUSIC VIDEO MATINEE: “Love Love Alone (live @ Ft. Mason, San Francisco 2018)” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFNFXmTAvFA —That was my 3rd gig in a row that day, and I can hear tinges of voice frazzle, but when you have a well-lit stage and energy, just do it! This song is a true story-song: In 1936 the future King of England abdicated the throne because he wanted to marry a “forbidden woman.” That would be King Edward and Ms. Wallis Simpson, better known as The Duke & Duchess of Windsor. The controversies of their lives are still a source of criticism and debate, but the point remains: A man chose love over power.
The song was a deep album cut by Harry Belafonte and it was presented to me by old friend and collaborator Dan Rielly (Funk Dub Division). It graduated from demo to big studio production on my FIRE album. During the FIRE sessions, the song caught the attention of Davy Jones (Monkees) for it’s airing of “controversial British history.” Davy cameo’d a vocal on my track and, months later, pitched the song to the cable TV series he was hosting then, MEET THE ROYALS. He also played it live a few times. The song remains a staple of my live set and, in 2012, was profiled on NME.com (website of the British music magazine). For more back story click on:

Cold as Ice - Chapter 16 - Part 1
Tumblr media
*Warning - Adult Content*
Landon Rielly
I never imagined what Wren's house looked like but if I did it would have been some house on a dead end street with a long driveway that practically put it in the middle of the woods, a suitable place for creatures like him to reside but when he pulled into his driveway, his house was nothing like that.
It was in a cul-de-sac neighborhood surrounded by houses that looked almost the exact same as each other.
It was a normal, suburban neighborhood and absolutely nothing how I imagined the place Wren lived to be.
However, that didn't make me regret coming with him any less.
"This is where you live?" I asked as he parked the car in front of the two-door garage.
"No, I'm just dropping you off here, at some random person's place," he replied with a straight face.
I rolled my eyes at him and the two of us got out of the car, Wren grabbing both of our bags from the backseat and throwing them over his shoulder.
"Are you sure it's okay for me to be here...?" I trailed off, glancing nervously over at Wren, as we walked up to the house.
"Fox isn't here," he said.
"I would know it if he was and I wouldn't have brought you here."
That only made me feel slightly better.
I wasn't ready for another confrontation with Fox anytime soon, not with the way he was giving me a death glare when I saw him at the diner a few weeks ago.
I followed Wren up to the house, him unlocking the door and letting us inside.
The house was dark, seeming like no one else was here.
I didn't know whether to feel more relaxed at that or more stressed at the fact that I was all alone with Wren.
He flipped on the lights and I took a look around the house.
We were standing in the living room that was practically spotless except for the books stacked on the coffee table and the video games in a pile on the floor near the TV.
There were a ton of pictures of the family all around the room.
A family portrait hung above the fireplace and individual school pictures of all the children were scattered about the walls.
I didn't realize Wren had so many siblings.
I didn't actually know he had one other than Fox.
Before I had the chance to say anything, two little girls came out of nowhere, screaming, one holding a frying pan and the other a broom as if they were going to hit the two of us with them.
I jumped back but Wren looked at them with a blank expression.
"Seriously?" he asked the girls, raising his eyebrows.
"You asshole," the one holding the broom exclaimed.
She smacked him with it.
"We thought someone broke in."
"Through the front door by unlocking it with a key?"
She smacked him again with the broom and he took it out of her hands.
"You don't know what it's like being a girl and having to live in fear," she yelled.
"Where are Mom and Dad? Where's Colt?"
"Mom and Dad are out with Dan and Mindy. Colt is upstairs but he would be no help in a break-in situation."
"I don't doubt that," Wren replied.
The other little girl was glaring at me, still holding the frying pan up like she was about to use it.
I recognized her from the diner a few weeks ago.
"Ava, you can put that thing down now," Wren told her but she didn't listen.
"What is he doing here?" she asked him, never taking her eyes off of me.
Wren looked between the two of us and let out a sigh.
"Okay, what's it going to take to keep you two quiet about this?"
"Quiet about what?" the other girl, who I assumed was his sister, asked, placing her hands on her hips.
"About him being here, Fawn," Wren said.
"What else?"
Fawn looked over at me for the first time and a look of realization washed over her.
"Oh, I know who this is," Fawn said with a grin at her brother.
"And it's a big price because Fox would bee so pissed if he knew."
"So...?"
"I'll leave that up to Ava," Fawn said, looking over at her friend.
I had no idea what was going on but I still looked over at Ava just as Wren and Fawn did.
She still held her glare on me, the frying pan in her hand.
That and the fact that Fawn deferred to her made me realize this must be Elijah's little sister.
I knew it was a bad idea to come here.
"Come on Ava," Wren said.
"Everyone has a price. What will it take for you to keep this from Elijah?"
"I don't think it's Elijah you need to worry about," Ava said, turning her glare at Wren.
"He won't do anything but Fox will rip your head off."
"I suppose you're right," he said.
"But you don't want to see me get my head ripped off, do you?"
Ava rolled her eyes.
"I actually don't care if you get your head ripped off."
Wren placed a hand on his chest, feigning like he was hurt.
"Ouch," he said, shaking his head.
"Alright Fawn, what will it take for you to keep your mouth shut?"
Fawn grinned at her brother.
"Give me your credit card and drive us to the mall."
Wren sighed then looked over at me.
"Wait here," he said, dropping out bags on the floor and leaving the room with Fawn.
That left me alone with Ava.
She had lowered the frying pan and dropped her glare but I still felt the hostility coming from her.
It was nothing I didn't deserve but it made me want to leave.
I'd rather sleep outside than have to worry about this little girl smothering me in my sleep.
"Elijah forgives you," Ava said, causing my eyes to move back to her.
"He's too nice sometimes."
I had no idea how to respond to that.
I hated thinking about Elijah and everything I had done to him, the way he tried to help me even though I didn't deserve it and how if it wasn't for him, I would have been shipped off to some hell-like place and hate myself even more than I did now.
"I..." I trailed. Ava looked at me expectantly, but nothing else came out of my mouth.
Wren and Fawn were back in the room before I could even think of anything and Fawn grabbed Ava's arm to drag her away.
"Come on," Fawn said.
"Wren's ordering food."
Ava followed her out of the room without giving me a second glance.
"I shouldn't be here," I said once Wren and I were alone.
Not with Elijah's little sister here.
I would just be constantly reminded of Elijah and not only the ways I had hurt him but how he gets to live his life so freely, how he has accepted himself, how he was so much happier and kinder than me.
Wren gave me a strange look.
"I'm the one that's going to have my brother try to beat me up if he finds out about this," Wren said.
"I don't know why you're so nervous."
I didn't reply, so Wren just picked up our bags and moved toward the stairs.
He noticed I wasn't following him and nodded toward the stairs so I would go with him.
I tried not to look around as I walked through the house.
There were more pictures in the hallway upstairs between the bedroom doors.
Wren brought me about halfway down the hall before he shoved open a door on the left side and walked in.
His bedroom was much like his side of his dorm room, neat and plain.
One side of the room had three bookshelves with neat rows of books on them.
The headboard of his bed had a couple piles of books laying there like he had them there so he would have options for what he read at night.
His bed was made perfectly with crisp folds in the sheets and comforter while his desk was a little more messy, littered with papers and sticky notes.
He tossed our bags down on the floor at the foot of his bed.
"I would offer to have you sleep in my sister's old bedroom but my mother turned it into a yoga studio," Wren said after a moment.
"So you'll have to settle for sleeping in here."
"And you'll sleep...?"
"In here," Wren said with a blank expression.
"Isn't it enough I've given up my bed at school for you? You want to take my bed at home too? Though, I supposed we could just share."
I scoffed.
"No. I would have just slept outside at my house if you were going to force me to share a bed with you."
There was a playful gleam in Wren's eye as he grinned at me.
"Who's forcing you?" he asked.
"We would both fit. We'd both fit in my bed at school too if you gave me some room."
I didn't even have a response for that.
"Come on," he said after a moment.
"Fawn made me order food and we have to go pick it up."

Dan Hamilton – USA Today
Leafs Much Better Defensively Since Trade Deadline
Prior to the trade deadline, the Leafs had allowed 4+ goals in basically every other game since the calendar turned to 2022. Not just due to below average goaltending, but very poor defensive play and structure. Sure, the Leafs have continued to outscore their defensive woes, just like they have in seasons past, but it’s not something they can do in the playoffs, given the completely different rulebook that favours rough, physical teams.
It had been a topic of conversation all season about how the Leafs needed to upgrade their blueline and Dubas was not naive to it. First he went out and traded for the Russian Bear Ilya Lyubushkin who immediately found a home next to Rielly on the top pairing. A big, physical defenseman who has twice as many hits as the next defenseman on the Leafs roster since joining the team, has given Rielly the ability to be more offensively free. Dubas was not done there, on deadline day, he brought in Toronto boy Giordano to solidify the Leafs’ backend. Giordano has fit nicely onto the third pairing playing with Liljegren, giving him a much needed veteran presence to guide him through difficult stretches. With a healthy Muzzin returning eventually, the Leafs may have their best defense corps in years for playoff hockey. Lyubushkin, Muzzin, Giordano and Brodie and to a lesser extent Holl, are all big guys that can play a more physical style of game and clear the front of the net. In the four games since Giordano has come over, the Leafs have given up 4 goals just once (versus Boston last night) and Liljegren and Gio have an expected goals for of 82.9%, which, in the small sample size is the highest of any defensive pairing in the league to play 50 minutes together. Yes the sample size is small, but there is no doubt his presence has brought some much needed stability to the backend, in particularly to the third pair.
On top of being a much better team defensively 5 on 5, the Leafs’ penalty kill has been outstanding as of late and is fourth overall in the league at 84%. I am not sure when the penalty kill philosophy changed to be so aggressive, but it has worked very well thus far and is something the Leafs will desperately need in the playoffs given officiating will become much worse than it already has. That’s a story for another day, but we’ve covered it quite a bit this season here at High Button.
As the Leafs await Campbell’s return, the hope is that this rib injury is what plagued him since the all-star break and that time off will have given him time to get back to his early season abilities between the pipes. As long as the Leafs get average or slightly above average goaltending, there is no reason they can’t and shoudn’t make it through one round of the playoffs this year.
Overall though, this Leafs team is structured much better defensively with their deadline acquisitions than in years past and should be much better equipped to handle the physicality of playoff hockey in a couple weeks time.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the multi-talented actor, activist, and singer Harry Belafonte. In his 90s be became known more for social activism, but in his lifelong career, he worked up an award-winning and unparalleled resume of hit films and recordings. When I perform in assisted living homes, I often play Belafonte’s evergreen “Banana Boat Song,” to the delight of the audiences. However, I have a stronger connection to one of his “deep cuts”—the song "Love Love Alone.” It tells the tale of King Edward and Ms. Wallis Simpson, better known as The Duke & Duchess of Windsor. While the true circumstances and controversies of their lives have been a source of criticism and debate, the point remains: In 1936 The King abdicated his power to be with the woman he loved. It was love over throne, and Harry gave the story a vivid make-over.
The song first came to my attention via my friend Dan Rielly. The 1957 HB version was quite calypso-fied (when calypso was, for a time, bigger than rock'n'roll). Dan and I took it into a synth-pop zone, leading to a full production for my FIRE album. During the FIRE sessions, the song caught the attention of Davy Jones (Monkees) for the song’s airing of “controversial British history.” Davy cameo’d a vocal on my track and, months later, he pitched the song to the cable television series he was hosting at the time, MEET THE ROYALS. He also played it live a few times. Meanwhile, HB to HB—thank you for shaing your skills and for the deep cuts on your records.

Annonymous said: maybe an auston matthews imagine where you somehow ended up being apart of ‘the guys’ with them showing up at your house randomly to pick you up to hangout and go to parties. and puckbunnies both are intimidated by you because youre always around and rude to you because you arent the typical super thin blonde, and get even more jealous of how close you are with auston in particular and then things happen and you n auston finally get together (surprise me with the how?) please and thank you :)

Different.
Unconventional.
Contrasting.
Distinct.
Peculiar.
Offbeat.
In your particular situation, those were the words that most described you best. Well, those were the nicer ones anyways.
“Whatcha thinking about?”
Your thoughts were interrupted by the sound of your best friend Connor. He, along with his girlfriend Madison, and your other close friend Morgan, were currently hanging out in your condo’s living room.
You gave him a small, reassuring smile, “Just school,”
He nodded, but pursed his lips.
Connor knew you better than anyone.
The two of you had met when you were six years old. By luck of the draw, you had both been placed onto the same house-league minor hockey team in Etobicoke. You had been given a hard time from the get-go that season, as you were playing with both six, seven, and eight-year old’s due to your division being branched out. It also didn’t help that you were the only girl on the team. Other teams you faced usually had two or three girls but not yours. You were the only one who’d been singled out by the league, forcing you to fend for yourself.
Even though Connor was a year older than you, with age being a usual dividing factor in youth dressing rooms, the two of you had become fast friends, and had been glued to the hip for much of your childhood.
As time went on, you switched to girl’s hockey as it had become more prominent a few years later, and Connor had made the jump to rep. Despite this, you both still went to each other’s games like nothing had changed, and made sure to still have your weekly hangouts at the Brown family’s home. Dan and Anne had even given you a key, that’s how close you were to Connor and his family.
When Connor was drafted by Erie when you were fifteen years old, you were ecstatic. Several times during the season you’d take a Friday off from school and drive down to Erie with the Brown’s to go visit and watch the Otters, and whenever he was around up near the Toronto area, you had to go see him play. And now, just a few short years later, he had just finished his rookie season as a Toronto Maple Leaf, and you couldn’t be more proud.
Through Connor, you’d become close to many of the guys on the team because you frequented games and social events, as requested by your best friend. Madison and him had been off and on until just recently, so when she hadn’t been around, you came to Maple Leaf activities instead in her place.
Inevitably, people, well more like fans of the team or puck bunnies as Connor called them, had discovered you. Thankfully, before the storm became to grave, you made all your social media private, but Connor and even some of the others had tagged you in photos multiple times. You were often seen in the background of multiple Leafs PR photographs or from other Leaf girlfriends Instagram’s. People knew who you were, and unfortunately some of them weren’t afraid to voice their own opinions.
“She’s so fat,”
“How do any of the guys even like her?”
“She just using them for attention,”
“I feel bad for Connor,”
Each comment was like a repeated stab in your gut. You were the first to admit that you weren’t the smallest girl around. Standing at five foot ten, and being a size sixteen, you were a bit bigger than the typical female that professional hockey players were often associated with. But you’d always been bigger. You were curvy, and when you were younger you were teased because of your larger hips but as you’d gotten taller you’d slimmed out. But since you weren’t a buck ten, and you weren’t the model type, people, mainly girls, ate you alive.
Sure, you’d talked to Connor a bit about it, but he was your best friend, not your boyfriend. As much as you loved him, you didn’t want to talk about your insecurities with him. You knew he’d just worry so you held it in. But you knew he was aware of the comments, and he often hovered over you when you’d all go out, just to make sure you were okay and to make sure no one was giving you a hard time.
All his teammates were great though. They all immediately warmed up to you during the season, and you were already particularly close with Zach, William and Kasperi because you’d known them from when Connor was on the Marlies. Of all the Leafs though, Morgan and you had become the closest. You guys clicked right away and you almost hanged out just as much with him then you did with Connor. He was your wing-man and you were his wing-woman as he put it. You almost had a sibling type relationship.
You went out almost once a week during the summer months with a group of the guys. Whoever was still around the GTA often came along and your condo was the meeting spot. Bars and clubs were the main places you went to, and occasionally a few of you would head to a baseball game. It was refreshing to be able to have some fun with everyone, especially when they weren’t as stressed as they normally would be during the season. But by going out, you just got more exposure, and that had led to an increase of hateful comments.
You couldn’t help but notice however, that these comments had skyrocketed after Auston Matthews and you were snapped a few times together one night when you had all headed to one of Toronto’s more popular summer clubs.
He had posted a photo of you, Zach, and William, and had dubbed you an honorary ‘liney.’ Even though he meant no harm by it, the photo had stirred up a lot of interest into who you were and Auston actually had to delete some of the comments and block several people due to their harsh words.
Trying to make it better, he then posted just a nice photo of the both of you, but it had honestly just made it worse. Jealous girls from every angle sought to attack you, so Auston was forced to disable the comments. He had apologized thoroughly but you had just shrugged it off. Even though you wouldn’t admit it, your thick skin was slowly beginning to taper off, and Connor had taken notice.
The part that had hurt the worst about the situation with the Arizona Native though, was the fact that you had been harbouring a massive crush on Auston for the better part of the past season. I mean, who wasn’t crushing on Auston Matthews? The only one who really knew one hundred percent about your feelings was Connor, and Morgan suspected at first, but he later gained confirmation. Thankfully he only teased you about it when it was just the two of you. William was well aware and Zach had clued in as well. It scared you sometimes, realizing any one of them could potentially let the cat out of the bag.
But the world had already decided you had no chance with Auston Matthews, before you could even try.
“Auston’s way out of her league,”
“He looks so uncomfortable,”
“Auston’s weekly bout of charity work I suppose,”
“Who does she think she is?”
When you had read those comments underneath the photo Auston had posted of the two of you, your heart ached. Who did you think you were? I mean, you even knew he was way out of your league.
Lately, you couldn’t help but compare yourself to the girls Auston typically took home with him. You’d been there several times to witness Auston pick his nightly hookup, and each time you watched, your heart sunk more and more. Blonde, average height, larger breasts, but most of all; stick thin. Everything you weren’t.
So later that night, you found yourself sipping on your fizzy vodka cranberry, with a pink umbrella because apparently, it wasn’t complete without one according to Mo. You sat rigid in the groups booth while you watched Auston survey the large crowd around you, obviously on the hunt.
“Cheer up pouty,” Morgan suddenly knocked into you, causing you to jerk forward as he took out your elbow that had been holding you up.
Sending him a quick glare in warning, Zach and William chuckled while they sat across from you. The four of you were currently on your own as Connor and Madison had gone up to the bar, and you had no clue where Mitch and his girlfriend Steph had ran off to.
Auston turned towards you from Zach’s left due to the sound of Morgan’s voice, “you good, Y/N?” He asked, looked towards you concerned.
You gulped, but nodded, looking away, “just peachy,”
Morgan howled in laughter, elbowing you in the side, causing you to yelp. Morgan suddenly winced immediately there after as Zach had kicked him in the shins, defending you. You sent him a grateful smile.
Auston had raised his eyebrows in confusion, “uh, okay,”
William chuckled low, and shook his head. Looking ahead of you, William sent you a wink, and you flushed. Your boys knew you way too well.
“Hey,”
Your eyes flickered up as you watched a tan, leggy blonde, wearing a barely-there type outfit approach the booth, well Auston specifically. You rolled your eyes and promptly looked away when you saw Auston look the girl up and down hungrily, his tongue darting out to lick his lips. Sighing, you caught William’s blue eyes dart towards you, a sympathetic look crossing over his features. You heard the unknown blonde giggle and you knew it, right then and there. Auston was taking her home.
Your thoughts were confirmed when Auston promptly stood from his seat and walked away with his new conquest.
“Does he even try?” I heard Morgan ask incredulously, and I bit my lip.
No, but he didn’t have to.
“Y/N!”
Looking over due to the shrill voice, you watched Madison wobble her way back to the booth, and a concerned looking Connor hot on her heels.
“Madison, slow down!” He called after her, the two drinks in his hands splashing around violently.
“Come dance with me!” Madison slurred, placing both her hands down flat onto the table, causing it to wiggle from her weight.
“You’re drunk Maddie,” you sighed, and she grinned, “no shit, so come have some fun!”
“Madison,” Connor warned, as he took a seat next to Morgan.
His brunette girlfriend then pouted, “please Y/N, Connie won’t come dance with me either,”
Morgan snorted, and Zach laughed, “Connie huh?”
“Shut it,” Connor spat, sending his teammate a glare.
“I’ll come dance with you,” William then piped up, and Connor whipped around towards the blonde, “absolutely not,”
“Oh c'mon Connie, your girlfriend just wants to have some fun,” William snickered and you groaned, knowing where this was going. Everyone was usually fine with William’s flirty personality, except for when another guys’ girlfriend was involved. Not wanting the two to get into it, you sighed, “fine, I’ll go,”
Morgan turned to look at you, and three other pairs of eyes zeroed in at the exact same time. They all looked shocked you had actually agreed, since you’d never once actually gone dancing when you’d been out with the boys.
“Great! Let’s go!” Madison chimed, clapping her hands together and Connor sent you an uneasy glance. Motioning for the boys to scoot, you stood from your seat and were essentially dragged out onto the dance floor by the very intoxicated Madison.
You weren’t concerned by her behaviour due to the fact you knew that not only Connor, but the others guys would be keeping a close eye on the both of you. It was almost nice knowing you had a big group of guys awaiting at your beckon call. It almost felt like you had more freedom since you knew if trouble came about, you’d have lots of backup.
As a new up-beat song played over the speakers of the club, Madison held your hands and began to bounce around. Moving with her, you smiled as she grinned at you, “There you go! Have some fun for once!”
As the alcohol you’d consumed finally started taking its affect, you began to feel warmth spread throughout your body. For a moment, you’d forgotten about your insecurities. You weren’t the bigger girl. You weren’t some leech that many people made you out to be. You were just having fun with your friends. No jealous puck bunnies. No asshole guys. And most of all, you’d forgotten about Auston going off with some girl. Well you had, until you spotted him.
There, about thirty feet away, he was swaying back and forth with the blonde who’d approached your table just a short while ago. With their bodies pressed tight up against one another, and Auston’s large hands gripping her hips tight, the girl was looking towards your friend with a lustful gaze. What irked you more, was the fact that Auston wore the same expression.
“Y/N?”
Flicking your eyes towards Madison, you’d then realized you’d stopped moving. You were standing stiff while bodies all around you continued moving in their alcohol driven motions. Taking a deep breath, and shaking your head free of all your thoughts, you slowly began bopping your head again and swaying your hips. It took every bit of strength within you not to stare back towards Auston.
“I need another drink,” you sighed, and Madison’s eyes brightened from your words, clearly agreeing as she nodded her head enthusiastically.
Walking up to the bar, you both took a seat and waited for the bartender to approach you. Once he got there, Madison ordered two tequila shots, while you ordered four. You downed them all one after the other, causing your best friend’s girlfriend to cheer. When the bartender came back for payment, you sneered out towards Auston, who was still getting up close and personal to his flavour of the night, and you just said to put it on his tab.
Now you were feeling fuzzy. You weren’t thinking clearly, and you were bitter. You were a hot, hazy, jealous mess.
As you turned to head back out onto the dance floor, you bumped into a hard chest. “Hey, hey, Y/N are you okay?”
Looking up, you met Connor’s eyes and you snorted, “what do you think?”
“Don’t do this just because of him, he’s not worth it Y/N,” Connor sighed, placing his hand onto your arm and rubbing it soothingly.
“Yeah well, clearly I’m not worth it either,” you bit out, before you pushed past your friend, and beelined to the washroom, trying to escape him and anyone else’s judgmental eyes.
“Y/N!”
You pushed on, ignoring Connor’s voice. As you travelled by your home booth, you could feel the others staring at you. But none of them dared to chase after you. It wasn’t that they didn’t care, they’d just never dealt with you when you were being over emotional. The only two guys besides Connor that would normally attempt to check in on you would be either Morgan, who honestly wasn’t sure what to do in this particular situation, or Auston, but he was a little preoccupied at the moment.
As you pushed the washroom door open, you walked up to the long sink and slammed your hands down onto the counter. Looking up into the mirror, you wanted to cry. Your face was flushed red, and your once decent makeup had begun flaking due to your sweat. Your hair was a mess, and your eyes had heavy looking bags beneath them. As your eyes trailed down towards your hips you bit your lip as you stared towards your body. You looked awful. Your drunken mind was playing tricks on you, and you were beginning to believe the words the jealous girls would always throw at you.
It was no wonder Auston had never looked at you any other way besides being Connor Brown’s best friend. You were nothing like the other girls.
“Oh no! Is Connor Brown’s little whore upset?”
You turned to your right to see a pair of scantily-clad girls, both of them giving you a devilish smirk. “I bet your fat ass is just upset because Connor finally realized how shitty of a friend you are for using him.”
You took a deep breath, your hands turning into fists as you tried to ignore them.
“Did one of the boys finally tell you no?“
You looked away, not wanting to interact with the two and give them the satisfaction of having an outburst, and you were about to walk away when one of them spoke again, “That or you finally realized you don’t have a chance in hell with any of them.”
“I mean look at you! You’re such a pig! Why would any of them want you!”
Stopping dead on your feet, the anger you were feeling suddenly began bubbling within you. You had finally reached your breaking point.
“Go fuck yourself,” you bit back, feeing your throat turn scratchy. Tears formed tiny beads in the corner of your eyes as you stood your ground. You sent them both a heavy glare, and whipped around on your feet, heading back towards the door. You didn’t want to hear it. They didn’t know what they were talking about.
As you exited the bathroom, you spotted Madison across the room. Walking briskly towards her, she gave you a sympathetic look.
“Y/N,”
“I’m leaving,” you stated, moving past her and towards the front doors of the club.
“Y/N!” Connor’s voice shouted.
Turning your head slightly, you watched your ginger haired friend bound his way up to you. Sighing, you stopped, and crossed your arms.
“Are you okay?”
You snorted, “No, I am not okay Connor,”
“Well, don’t leave alone, let me take you home,” he begged, reaching out to take your hand.
You moved back a bit, keeping him from touching you. He flashed you a look of hurt, “Stay with Madison, you’re here with her, remember?”
“No, I’m here with the both of you, and I’m more concerned about you right now Y/N, you’re not thinking straight.” Connor explained, “please, just come sit down for a bit and we’ll all leave,”
You shook your head, “I just need to be alone Connor, and I don’t need everyone pitying me. I’ll be fine,”
“Y/N,” Connor pleaded, “if this is about Auston,”
“It’s not!” you spat, your anger and insecurity bubbling over, “it’s not just about him, it’s about me! I just, I can’t keep doing this. I can’t keep pretending that I’m okay Connor.” You cried out, tears now leaking down your cheeks.
“Y/N, I love you, you know that,” Connor sighed, before pulling you into his arms. “I don’t know what I’d do without you,”
You nodded, before wrapping your arms around his torso, and embracing him back. “You’re such a beautiful girl Y/N, and one day, some unworthy idiot is going to realize that too. Those girls, they’re just jealous because they can’t understand why we all love you so much. And I know the boys love you because you’re yourself, your gorgeous, funny, and truthful self. And I love you because you’ve been with me through thick and thin and because you’ve always supported me. Now please, don’t let the people that don’t know you make you destroy yourself.”
You sniffled, and hugged your best friend tighter. Connor always knew how to make you feel better.
“Are you two okay?”
Looking up, you met brown eyes. Connor turned towards his teammate and nodded, “We’re probably going to head out, Y/N’s had a rough night,”
“I can take her home if you want,” Auston said, “it’s no problem,”
The girl on Auston’s arms grimaced before sending you an unimpressed look. You looked down towards your feet, as Connor’s hand remained on your lower back protectively.
“We don’t want to spoil your night Matts,” Connor then replied, but Auston shook his head, “you’re not spoiling anything, I wasn’t getting a good vibe tonight honestly. I was just going to head out by myself anyways,”
You couldn’t help the smirk that appeared on your lips as the leggy blonde from earlier stood back from Auston, her eyes wide in shock, before she rolled her eyes and walked away.
“Uh, alright,” Connor said, “is that okay Y/N?”
You shrugged, “doesn’t matter,”
Connor sighed, before pulling you in for another hug and pressing his lips against your forehead. “Text me when you get home, please,”
“I will,” you promised, before pulling away and walking towards the doors, with Auston following you right behind.
As you pushed the doors open and began waking to your left, you immediately placed your hands in front of your face as several bright flashes blinded you.
Auston muttered something incoherently before you felt him place his hand down onto your back. As he led you away from the group of photographers, who were obviously waiting for someone high-profile to leave the venue, Auston was bombarded by several questions, including his upcoming season, his training regime, and surprisingly, you.
“New girlfriend Auston?” A male’s voice questioned, just as you were about to reach an awaiting taxi.
Deciding not to answer, Auston instead opened the car’s rear door and ushered you inside, his larger body following you behind. As the taxi took off, Auston gave the driver his address, rather than yours, causing you to give him a questioning look.
He sent you a reassuring smile, “it’s fine, some of those guys might follow after us, and I don’t want them knowing where you live,”
You nodded, and turned back to look out the window. You were honestly surprised Auston had even thought of that, and it made you feel warm inside due to him seeming to care about you and your privacy.
As you watched the lit up, downtown core pass you by, you couldn’t help the nervous feeling in your gut as you felt Auston’s hand rest on your thigh. You weren’t sure if he had even noticed he had placed it there when you had gotten into the taxi, but it almost felt like his touch was burning you.
“I just texted Connor, to let him know you’re just coming back with me,” Auston then voiced, and you nodded, “thanks Auston,”
As you reached Auston’s condo complex, you stepped out of the taxi and waited for Auston to pay the driver. He flashed you a small smile when he joined you and led you into his building. Pressing the elevator button, you rode in silence until you reached Auston’s floor.
“I’m just gonna use the washroom and get changed,” the younger boy told you, when you finally walked into his bachelor pad.
You nodded in understanding, and made your way into his living room. Taking a seat onto his long, plush, sofa, you stared out his condo’s window, and stared down at the city below. Even though it was well into the early hours of the morning, the city was still as bright as ever. You had always enjoyed Auston’s condo’s view. He easily had the best view of the city out of any of the other guys’ condo’s.
Your head had begun throbbing due to the alcohol you’d consumed slowly dying down. Sighing, you stood and walked into his kitchen, and began looking for his aspirin. You knew he kept his medication in the cupboard above his fridge, and you honestly didn’t think he’d mind. Grabbing a cold-water bottle from Auston’s fridge, you took a sip before you looked up towards the cupboard. Even though you were quite tall for a girl, you still couldn’t quite reach the handle’s on the twin doors.
Pursing your lips, you placed your hands onto your hips and looked around the room for anything to help you extend your reach. You considered using the broom that was in the crook between the fridge and the kitchen’s wall, but then you spotted one of the bar stools that sat against Auston’s kitchen’s island.
Even though they weren’t the most stable seats, they were tall enough for you to reach the cupboard, so you carried the stool into the kitchen and placed it up against the fridge. At first, you just hopped up onto your knee’s but your height hadn’t increased enough. Sighing, you gripped the top of Auston’s fridge, and shakily stood up onto one leg. Taking a breath, you then shifted your weight and brought your other leg up, leaving you fully standing on the rickety bar stool.
Reaching over, you grinned once you could finally open the cupboard. Spotting Auston’s aspirin, you grabbed the box of tablets and closed the doors promptly. Turning, you crouched down and placed the medicine onto Auston’s counter top. Moving one leg down to rest onto the steel step underneath the stools seat, you gasped when the seat teetered. Your shift in weight had caused the unstable chair to wobble violently. As it came out from underneath you, you suddenly felt another body grab onto you, and pull you into their chest while the seat clattered down onto the tiled floor.
“Are you okay?” Auston asked concerned, his eyes wide.
You flushed once you realized how close the two of you were. With your chests pressed together and Auston’s muscular arms wrapped around you securely, your heart thumped fiercely.
“Uh yeah,” you then got out, and Auston sighed in relief.
“You could’ve gotten hurt Y/N,” Auston then spoke, “why didn’t you come get me?”
You shrugged, pulling away, “I didn’t want to bother you,”
Auston rolled his eyes, “you never bother me Y/N,”
“Sorry about the stool,” you then said, looking down towards the piece of furniture. Auston sighed, “I don’t care about that, I care about you. If I hadn’t come out just now, you could’ve really hurt yourself.”
“Well I’m fine,” you declared, reaching out to grab the aspirin and walking over to lift the bar stool up right. Taking your water, you then made your way back into the living room.
“So what happened tonight?” Auston asked, when he finally joined you on the opposite side of the couch.
“I could ask you the same thing,” you returned, before taking another sip of the cool water.
Auston smirked at your words, and you looked towards him. “I just had a bad night, nothing really went my way,”
Auston nodded, “I can relate to that,”
You cocked your head, “blondie was no good?”
He laughed, “something like that,”
“Well, for the record, I didn’t like her from the second I saw her,” you explained, and Auston chuckled, “you never like them though Y/N,”
“Because they’re never good enough, you deserve way more than some slutty floozy from a bar or club Auston,” you explained.
“Really? Is that so?” Auston questioned, sending you a small smirk.
You rolled your eyes, “yes, any of you boys deserve more, and until you realize it, you’re not going to find what you’re looking for,”
Auston shifted in his seat, turning more towards you, “and what exactly am I looking for Y/N?”
You sighed, and pulled your left leg up into your chest to rest on, “I can’t answer that for you Auston, especially when you don’t even understand the question,”
Auston narrowed his eyes slightly, taking your words in. When realization finally dawned on him, his lips then curved upwards, “you’re good, you know that?”
You smiled towards him, and brought your water bottle back to your lips. Too bad you felt like you weren’t good enough for him.
“What are you looking for then Y/N?”
Blinking in surprise, you placed the bottle back down onto the coffee table beside you and thought before speaking, “I’m not really looking anymore Auston, I think, I think I’m just waiting,”
Auston nodded, “well, I hope you won’t wait for too long,”
You nodded, and looked away,
“me either,”

r/hockey NHL Power Rankings Week 1: Toothless Sharks Edition
/r/Hockey NHL Power Rankings Week Sep 30, 2019 - Oct 6, 2019 (29/31 Rankers Reporting)Thank YouThank you to all of the volunteers doing the power rankings. Each ranker has their own system and have their own reasonings and analyis. It truly is a lot of work.RankersSpoilerOrganizersSpoilerVisualizationThe visualization contains historical data, so you can see how your team has done over time. Hopefully, we can run this for many years in hopes that we can see the rise and fall of teams by /r/hockey opinion. It automatically updates so feel free to bookmark. You can find it hereProcessHow does this work? Throughout the course of the week rankers are able to access an app that will allow them to rank teams. At the end of the period we calculate the average ranking for every team and collate all of the analysis provided by rankers. The app then generates a post that is first proofread and then posted to /r/hockey!RankingsRanking (avg)TeamDeltaOverall RecordRecord This WeekComments1 (3.09)Vegas Golden Knights-2-0-02-0-0Not a major surprise the Golden Knights came out with something to prove when they played the San Jose Sharks and out scored them 9-2 in two games to start the season. The Knights have clearly worked on their Penalty Kill allowing 0 goals while scoring 3 shorthanded goals themselves. The Golden Knights have only played against one team so far but they have a huge test on Tuesday as the Boston Bruins visits T-Mobile Arena. The Golden Knights are playing without two quality forwards in Cody Eakin and Alex Tuch, who got hurt during the preseason, and their number 1 defenseman, Nate Schmidt, who got hurt early during the season opener.2 (3.35)Boston Bruins-2-0-02-0-0The Bruins start the season on the road and picked up where they left off last season, playing a strong defensive game but not a high octane offense either. Two wins to start the season is great but the real test will be Vegas this Tuesday. With some new teammates and players still recovering from the long playoff run, it will take time to build chemistry and the anemic powerplay shows that. Halak got the first shutout in the League which bodes well for another 1a/1b season.3 (4.89)Toronto Maple Leafs-2-0-12-0-1Its the first week of the season and the leafs are showing they still have some rust to shake off. Going 2-0-1 is great espcially when we had a back to back but 10 goals against is not ideal. That being said the team has looked good. Auston Matthews once again getting off to an early start with 5 goals in 3 games. Mitch Marner and Morgan Rielly also sitting with 5 points in 3 games. The offence is as usual clicking for the Leafs it's just a matter of getting things set on the defensive end and not taking dumb penalties. Despite this though the leafs have stilled walked away with 5 of a possible 6 points so I think it safe to say this has been a successful opening weeks for the buds.4 (5.56)Colorado Avalanche-2-0-02-0-0Start of a new season and Big Moose (Rantanen) is back! Avs have a lot of turnover from last season 8 different players starting from closing night of the regular season, though some of that is injuries. The new guys look good, but the Top Line is still flying. This defense is ridiculously young, only Johnson has more than 300 games played and 3 of them have less than 50 combined, mistakes will be made, but the hope is they learn from them and get better and better. Our depth is better this year, but chemistry still needs to be worked on, our second line cannot find its flow right now, but it has moments. Shout out to Grubauer already stealing a game against Minnesota. Oh and Calder watch Makar already has two assists through two games, oh and he played 22 minutes on opening night.5 (6.18)Carolina Hurricanes-3-0-03-0-0Hard to judge a team after only 1 week of play, but as the team is starting to gel around the newcomers, flashes of brilliance are starting to mainfest. Gardnier is looking like the #1 PP QB we have been lusting for, Haula has a nose for the net, Aho and Svech are looking brilliant, and Edmusson and Slavin are making the brilliant defensive plays we need of them.6 (6.35)Washington Capitals-2-0-12-0-1Even in the absence of Kuznetsoz the Caps are still one of the best teams in the league. Vrana seems poised to enter the next level this season which is good news as Ovechkin is starting the season off slow.7 (8.29)Tampa Bay Lightning-1-1-11-1-1Tampa looks different this season so far. While the new additions like Kevin Shattenkirk and Patrick Maroon seem to be plugging in very well, the team is having a lot of trouble staying out of the box, especially in key situations. That, combined with a low shot total, is resulting in some frustrating play, and has caused 2 bad losses. Hopefully this is just a slow start for the team, because if these penalties continue, it could be a long season.8 (8.29)Buffalo Sabres-2-0-02-0-0Players without a point after two games: Elite 2nd line winger Vladimir Sobotka, Johan Larsson, Jimmy Vesey, and Henri Jokiharju. Our fourth line has been on fire. Sam Reinhart looks like a top 10 passer in the league. The hype level is reaching heights never before seen, and there are two possible outcomes. First, the Sabres Sabres it all up, or second, the Jack Adams trophy is renamed in Ralph Krueger's honor. Don't let me down Buffalo.9 (9.47)St. Louis Blues-1-0-11-0-1Binnington looks good, Faulk seems to fit in, Blais and some other young players look primed to fill in the gaps in our roster, and Jaden Schwartz decided to avoid the early season slump from last season by scoring one last night!10 (11.09)New York Rangers-2-0-02-0-0Mika Zibanejad is a God. Ok we got that out of the way. This team is very fun to watch right now, but there are obviously still issues. The first line is very fun to watch and so is the first power play unit. Mika has 8 points in 2 games which is very exciting, but in terms of the rest of our centers, there isn't much to say. We need a true 2C but we should let one of the kids (Andersson, Chytil, Howden) grow in to the role rather than panic and just get a rental, even though Strome has been quite the opposite of good. The defensive side of things hasn't been as bad as projected also. I think we should stick with the pairings we played in game 2, but there will likely be a lot of shuffling. I'm looking forward to the rest of this season though! LGR11 (12.97)Nashville Predators-1-1-01-1-0Hockey's finally back, and it's time for the first (half) week of power rankings where everything's made up and the points don't matter. This offseason saw the Preds make some pretty major moves, which even after the limited sample size of 2 games are already making an impact. The biggest headline was of course the 1-2 combo of a trade that saw Subban go to NJ, freeing the cap space needed to sign UFA Duchene to a 7 year, $56m deal. The addition gives the Preds a solid 1a/1b, and Duchene has looked strong already posting 5 assists. Also significant was the hiring of Dan Lambert to run the PP, after a year where the Preds posted the 33rd worst PP% since the stat began being tracked in 1977. While only time will tell how the change in system works out, it has already looked promising in the preseason and first 2 games. Overall optimism is high, as this looks to be another year where the Preds will be a top contender in the West and hopefully make up for their first round exit in last year's playoffs.12 (13)Calgary Flames-1-1-01-1-0The curse continued for the Flames as they lost their 10th straight season opener. The team rebounded nicely against Vancouver, largely due to a great shutout performance from Rittich. Through 2 games Lucic has been mostly unnoticeable other than his 21 PIMs, but I don't think Flames fans expected much else. Thankfully, the Flames have enough firepower elsewhere, especially from Johnny Hockey whos started the season strong with 5 points through 2 games.13 (14.29)Anaheim Ducks-2-0-02-0-0The ducks are finally exciting to watch. Throw out your watch ability rankings and tune in for some high event hockey. In other news, Ondrej Kase is good and probably underrated. He leads the team in shots and was a driving force behind the ducks 3 goals against the sharks.14 (14.35)Edmonton Oilers-2-0-02-0-0The Oilers have come out this season swinging with a solid 2-0 first week. With wins against the Canucks and the Kings, both divisional opponents, the Oilers look poised to continue their positive efforts on the penalty kill to provide solid results on the final score line. Mike Smith has looked shaky, but the top line of McDavid, Draisaitl and Kassian has looked potent. The powerplay too with Klefbom and Neal has been dynamic. There are definite gaps with the loss of Larsson further exposing the lack of depth on defense, no scoring coming from the bottom 6, and close 1 goal games against teams unlikely to be in the running for playoffs come February. RNH is also distinctly missing from the score sheet. Cautious optimism is the way to go for now.15 (14.56)Montreal Canadiens-1-0-11-0-1Kept up with the best teams in the league, crazy fast and had a nice comeback win against the leafs (4-1). If the defense stabilizes, they will be a serious threat.16 (14.88)Florida Panthers-1-1-01-1-0The Panthers had two solid games and Bob and Hoffman stole the show during the home opener. Q's system will take some time to cement itself, but it's looking good.17 (15.47)Pittsburgh Penguins-1-1-01-1-018 (17.71)Philadelphia Flyers-1-0-01-0-0Thank goodness this only counts for the regular season and I dont have to address the HC Lausanne game. They played well against the blackhawks, with AV's system seeming to help us create chances. Hart looked good in net, giving up larger rebounds as the only real knock I had for him. Basically we won the first game, so its about to be an 82-0 season and a 16-0 playoff run. Gritty will hoist the cup soon. And his day with the cup will be glorious. Praise Gritty.19 (17.94)New York Islanders-1-1-01-1-0The biggest change this off-season was in net, with Varlamov replacing Lehner as the 1a. Varlamov didn't look fantastic but only let in 2 goals in his debut, with improvement surely to come as he settles into the Korn system with the tremendous defense in front of him. Greiss picked up where he left off last year, looking fantastic. Barzal continues to be a magician with the puck, Nelson still has a filthy wrister, and perhaps most importantly, the fourth line is looking completely healthy. Beauvillier has impressed in his two games, hoping to add consistency. Things to look for include Dobson making his debut, and what the Islanders end up doing with Hickey (consistent part of their blue-line for the last half-decade) and Ho-Sang (requested a trade) who are on their AHL affiliate while having the talent that would make some NHL rosters.20 (18.44)Detroit Red Wings-2-0-02-0-0The Bertuzzi-Larkin-Mantha line that broke through last season picked up where they left off in their weekend openers against Nashville and Dallas. Jimmy Howard is looking excellent and looks to have another season where he can give the Wings a chance to win any game as long as there’s effort from the skaters. Outside of the top line and goaltender the Wings look absolutely average especially without Andreas Athanasiou carrying a 2nd line. Outside of Hronek, the defense group looks slow and sometimes even lazy as they fail to exit the defensive zone on many attempts and produce too many unforced turnovers, giving opposing teams extended zone pressure. This team can definitely score and get their shots off however any opposing teams will not have trouble keeping up with the Wings on the scoreboard regardless of any lead the Wings have. If they keep scoring 4+ goals a game, they will have a chance at competing for a wild card spot this season.21 (19.62)Winnipeg Jets-1-2-01-2-0Little bit of good, lots of bad. Defensive depth seemed to be a real liability, Anthony Bitteto proved he was not a worthy NHL defenseman, Helly and Brossoit have yet to return to the forms we know they can get to and we have trailed for almost all of our 3 games. But, on the bright side, Laine and Connor seem to have real chemistry and are working well with Copp, and the top line of The Knife, Ehlers and Captain Wrench has been quite good. The Letestu/Bourque line has left lots to be desired, as their age has certainly shown through. For this team to succeed we need lots of 3rd Period vs New Jersey and much much less whole game vs the Islanders. One brighter note is that Kulikov has been a lot better than last season, and Heinola is also one of the lone bright spots on an inexperienced/unskilled back end.22 (21.71)Chicago Blackhawks-0-1-00-1-0The Blackhawks started on the wrong foot, losing 4-3 against the Flyers in Prague. Patrick Kane factored in every goal (1G, 2A). Alex DeBrincat signed a 3 year extension at $6.4M AAV. Team defense should hopefully improve when both Connor Murphy and Calvin de Haan recover from their groin injuries. Also, fans are excited to see if Kirby Dach can contribute this season after missing training camp with a concussion.23 (22.24)Dallas Stars-0-3-00-3-0There's many issues. Injuries. Slow starts or weak finishes. Key players not producing. But there's signs of life, and the pieces are still here. Monty has some work to do to make those pieces fit. More tough opponents next week, so things need to change sooner than later or this losing streak is bound to grow.24 (24.03)New Jersey Devils-0-1-10-1-1This week is a shitshow with rankings, so I personally put anyone with one game played near the lower middle simply for not enough data. Now onto the Devils. Oof. Nearly 2 full periods that went really well and then just everything just seemed to fall apart. We had a scare thinking Cory may have hurt himself again, but that seems to be averted and he was available in Buffalo. Speaking of Buffalo, damn I hope that game doesn't weigh too much on Blackwoods mind. Honestly, I'm just hoping that this is the struggle of having several new guys on the team all learning to play together. I don't want to believe that the Devils are in the bottom 10 of the league, but the last 4 periods they played certainly made it appear that they are.25 (24.94)Arizona Coyotes-0-2-00-2-0Two games into the season, the Coyotes are looking extremely good, despite the win %. The defense, which was 5th best in the NHL last season, is starting right where it left off, allowing only 1.5 GPG. Kuemper has been stellar as well, with a SV% of 94.5%. In regards to offense, the Coyotes are finding it, but are yet to convert; in fact, the only goal comes in the first game against Anaheim, courtesy of the Kessel-Keller-Stepan line. This being said, the Coyotes have outshot the opponent 68 to 55 in the first two showings (owning 54.3% of high danger scoring chances), especially flashing dominance against Boston, controlling possession the majority of the game. With a shot percentage of only 1.5% and a PDO at 94.7, the Coyotes can expect to start winning games at a high level, so long as they continue playing how they are playing.26 (25.91)San Jose Sharks-0-3-00-3-0Not much to say, just that the Sharks have looked awful so far this season. Everyone looks lazy. It feels like the Sharks want to recreate game 7 against Vegas by giving everyone 3 goal leads.27 (26.06)Los Angeles Kings-0-1-00-1-028 (26.38)Minnesota Wild-0-2-00-2-0The only real change from last season to this season is the aging process for the Minnesota Wild. Key signing Mats "Lizard" Zuccarello was just another step in that direction. It's very early, but Nashville and Colorado should fight for the Central title; Minnesota clearly looked outmatched and outskilled in these first two games. New GM Bill Guerin may get the green light to blow things up early if this is all the Wild have to offer for their on-ice product - and their off-ice product is not much better.29 (26.79)Vancouver Canucks-0-2-00-2-0The Canucks probably deserved better in their season opener vs. The Oilers, and they probably deserved exactly what they got on Saturday vs. the Flames. Thus far, the team has demonstrated that it can be quite exciting - even dominant. It has also demonstrated how difficult it is to compete in this league - even with a few shiny new pieces on your roster. Hopefully the announcement of the new Team Captain during Wednesday's home opener will bring about a much needed change of fortunes - because as Oilers and Buffalo fans can long attest, a prolonged skid to start the season can make it very difficult for a team of young guns to turn the corner.30 (28.03)Columbus Blue Jackets-0-2-00-2-0Not quite the start of the season the Jackets were hoping for. The youngest team in the league is going to have some growing pains, especially with our two unproven goaltenders. That being said, outside of the goaltending, the rookies have looked promising. Within the next few games, stuff will start to click.31 (30.09)Ottawa Senators-0-2-00-2-0Operation #DernièrePourLafrenière is moving forward swimmingly, with the Sens giving up the season's first hat trick to Zibby and looking nearly as bad as the Sharks on the PP. Chabot and White are signed up long term, so all that's left to do for the season is to lose a ton of games, let the kids get as much playing experience as possible, and watch hometown hero Scott Sabourin trigger some Leafs and Habs fans. Oh, and pray Eugene Melnyk's cash-flow problems to force a sale of the team. r/hockey NHL Power Rankings Week 1: Toothless Sharks Edition Source

Highlights of Saturday’s NHL games
(The Sports Xchange) – Highlights of National Hockey League games on Saturday:
Golden Knights 3, Capitals 0
Marc-Andre Fluery stopped 26 shots to pick up his first shutout of the season and lead the Vegas Golden Knights to a 3-0 victory over the Washington Capitals on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena.
It was the eighth win in nine games (8-0-1) for the Golden Knights, who are tied with Tampa Bay for the most home wins in the NHL (15). Alex Tuch, Oscar Lindberg and William Karlsson all scored first-period goals for Vegas. That was all Fluery needed en route to the 45th career shutout of his career.
Braden Holtby had 25 saves for Washington, which fell out of first place in the Metropolitan Division.
Lightning 3, Wild 0
