Dear Santa (2024)
Tumblr media
While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...
Dear Santa is a film that doesn’t know where to stand. Luckily, Jack Black’s performance and the original premise are enough to bridge the gap. You categorize the picture as an enjoyable but imperfect PG-13 Holiday comedy. Then, we get to the gigantic pile of coal of a conclusion. It’s such a bad call you have to dismiss the entire film because of it.
Dyslexic 6th-grader Liam Turner (Robert Timothy Smith) mistakenly sends his holiday wishlist to Satan instead of Santa Claus. When “Santa Claus” (Jack Black) appears in his room and offers to grant Liam three wishes for an undisclosed price, he’s initially skeptical – this jolly red fellow doesn’t look like he does on the greeting cards – but accepts. His first wish is for his crush at school, Emma (Kai Cech), to give him a chance.
If I hadn’t told you the film’s MPAA rating, what would you have guessed was the target audience for this movie? Probably the same crowd that saw Sausage Party or Good Boys? Surely not children with the whole “Satan is trying to trick this pre-teen into giving him his soul" thing. The jokes write themselves. Satan needs to grant Liam’s wishes to keep making more. Once he grants that third one, the boy's going straight to Hell. Can Satan fulfill the boy's deepest desires without giving away his true identity? Keep in mind, that those wishes might be harder to fulfill than you think because the kid is… kind of dumb. Infernal powers can only do so much, you know? Before you get upset, I’m not calling Liam dumb because he’s dyslexic. I’m saying he’s dumb because he a) still believes in Santa Claus despite being in the sixth grade and b) Confuses Satan for Santa Claus. This is a comedy so you’re willing to suspend your disbelief. In fact, Liam not realizing something that obvious is the joke. Even so, the part feels like it was meant for someone younger than twelve. The problem is, our protagonist can’t be too young because if he was any littler, his crush on Emma would be weird. It’s still weird now. The screenplay by Ricky Blitt and Peter Farrelly, with Jack Black (who I assume wrote most of his own dialogue because the other two are credited with the story, along with Dan Ewen) does give another reason for why this seemingly dopey kid is so easily tricked by the fallen angel but we’ll get to that a little later and even with that extra reason, he’s still too old to be duped this easily.
The PG-13 rating is not due to violence, gore or frightening imagery. It's due to language as Satan liberally says shit, ass, damn, crap, hell, etc. That wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing. If this movie had tweaked it humour and premise to appeal to younger children, you can see how it would’ve been successful. In fact, it is often successful, thanks to Jack Black. He’s clearly having a great time with this role, he has all the best lines and the funniest scenes. He even plays a pretty good “Santa”. The reason you keep watching despite everything is because of him, and to a certain extent, Robert Timothy Smith. He and Black play off each other well.
Tumblr media
Despite the film’s confused identity, I might’ve given it a mild recommendation if it weren’t for the ending. When we learn that Liam’s parents (Brianne Howey as Molly and Hayes MacArthur as Bill) are having marital problems, you think it’s just so they can be kept busy their son runs around with the Prince of Darkness. When you learn the marriage is strained because Liam’s younger brother recently passed away, you think “That’s unusually harsh for a goofy movie like this” but you file it away as an odd decision on top of the choice to waste Keegan-Michael Key as Liam’s psychiatrist and below the scene where Post Malone is magicked into becoming Liam’s best friend. Actually, it’s the crack that will cause the dam to burst. Eventually, Liam proves himself a good boy. His unselfish wishes melt Satan’s heart. As a reward, The Devil resurrects poor, dead Spencer and alters everyone’s memories (save for Liam’s) accordingly. First of all, this contradicts an earlier scene where Satan explicitly says he cannot change history. Second of all, what is this movie trying to say? At best, it’s “If you’re good enough, ANYTHING you want will come true”. At worst, it’s "Send a letter to a demonic entity and you’ll be able to snap the laws of the universe in half.” It’s genuinely upsetting; a complete, jaw-dropping miscalculation.
Tumblr media
The "I can’t believe you actually went there” conclusion should make Dear Santa worth a watch but it doesn’t. The film constantly hints at the success it could’ve been but even if it was tonally consistent, the finale leaves you angry and confused. Not in a “What happened?” kind of way; in a “What were they thinking?” kind of way. Again, I feel like I’m making it sound like this is so bad you’ve got to see it for yourself, but it’s merely a letdown. (December 6, 2024)

Musician Musician Graeme Hunter Kelling passed away on June 10th 2014 in Glasgow.
Graeme was the original guitarist with Deacon Blue..
Born in Paisley, and brought up in Mount Vernon in the East End of Glasgow, Kelling always had a passion for music. A self-taught guitarist, he joined his first band, Tune Cookies, in the early 1980s. Kelling developed his technique while working as a session musician. He performed with numerous groups before auditioning for Deacon Blue in 1986.
Deacon Blue became one of Scotland’s biggest acts in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Taking its name from a Steely Dan song, the band consisted of Kelling, Ricky Ross, Lorraine McIntosh, Dougie Vipond, Jim Prime and Ewen Vernal. Deacon Blue had numerous chart hits like “Dignity,” “Fergus Sings the Blues” and “Real Gone Kid,” before breaking up in 1994.
The group reunited five years later and released the album, “Walking Back Home.” In the interim, Kelling wrote and produced theme music for television as well as running his own recording studio. He also wrote restaurant reviews and contributed to Scotland The Best, a travel almanac compiled by Peter Irvine.
Deacon Blue did a reunion gig in 1999 and this led on to a new album, Kelling was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer but continued on with the band.
Graeme dealt with his illness with dignity, courage and characteristic dry humour. Friends will recall his passion for life, his sensitivity to others, his capacity to give and receive love and his devotion to his family, who brought him such joy.
Graeme’s final appearance with Deacon Blue took place on March 26 2004 at the Glasgow Academy, he passed away on June 10th same year, he was aged 47.
Rather than pick a song of my choice as I normally do I thought it more fitting to post the bands own tribute to him in 2014 , the lyric for the song is lovely and certainl shows how he was appreciated and loved.......
I was hoping you’d come back I was looking for a chance To gather up some photographs and laughs To give to you So I drove the long road back Just to hear one last remark Or maybe just an old gag Like “they always get the fat guy in the end.” In the end In the end Sun goes down And the stars come out And the world keeps on turning In the end I know you couldn’t see But I was there to watch you sleep And I figured out Jesus was wanting you more You’d told me what was bad And told me if I was good At last, too Late I understood Cause they’ll always Leave the loser And they always pick a winner Cause they always take the good guy In the end In the end Sun goes down And the stars come out And the world keeps on turning In the end

Rollacoaster catches up with face of Halbrand and The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power, Charlie Vickers
Shedding the mystery of his character, The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power's Charlie Vickers talks on playing Halbrand, the pressures of his craft and what can we expect next from the Middle Earth star.
Nice interview with some great photos 🔥😍
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This year’s hotly-anticipated return to Middle Earth saw a staggering quarter of a million viewers settle in for an Orc-infested ride into all things mythical, with 30-year-old actor, Charlie Vickers, leading the foray. Introducing Hollywood’s newest name, assuming the role of Halbrand, the lost king of the fictional Southlands.
After several auditions – seven, to be exact – and months perfecting the Middle Earth common tongue, the Australian actor wasted no time in syphoning the armour of the cunning character. Vickers might be worlds apart from Halbrand’s machiavellian self (spoiler alert: later to be revealed as Sauron), it’s not Vickers’ first rodeo fabricated a character far from his day-to-day life, playing Guglielmo Pazzi in Medici: Masters of Florence as well as Dan in Palm Beach. Sizing up a plentiful roster, the rising star reflects on the pressure that came with signing onto the major movie franchise and setting his heights high for what comes next.
CATY PENZA: Before we start talking about all things Lord of the Rings, can you tell us a little bit about how you got into acting? What has your journey been like?
CHARLIE VICKERS: I never really considered acting as a possibility at first because I didn’t believe it would be a successful career for me. It wasn't until a couple of years into me studying at university that I realised maybe I could have a go at acting because I didn’t feel any passion towards what I was doing. So I flew to Sydney and auditioned for a drama school and got selected. That’s kind of where everything started unfolding.
CP: Growing up, were there any actors you looked up to?
CV: I was in Melbourne and I went to see a production of Richard III and the leading actor was Ewen Leslie. I definitely look up to him, even though I’ve never actually met him, but his performance was a real catalyst for my career. I’d love to tell him that one day.
CP: Hopefully he reads this interview and finds out!
CV: Yes! That would be incredible.
CP: You play Halbrand in The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power, how did you come about getting cast for the role?
CV: It was a long audition process for me. I auditioned maybe six or seven times over a period of six months. I originally auditioned for another character three times, and then got moved to audition for Halbrand. It was a long process, I even flew to Spain to test shoot with J.A. Bayona, who directs the first two episodes. It was a pretty amazing day and it was the last piece of the puzzle to getting the role.
CP: What was it like switching into the Halbrand persona? Did you have to do or think about anything in particular?
CV: I spent a lot of time researching source material. Because he’s an original character, I wanted Halbrand to fit into that world and make sure he had all the talking elements. Halbrand is also very different to me, so I had to tap into things that I wasn’t necessarily used to tapping into. It was so interesting watching the show and seeing that difference.
CP: What was your reaction like when you saw the show for the first time?
CV: It was pretty amazing. We saw it for the first time as a cast in Los Angeles, with a screening of the first three episodes. It was so overwhelming and incredible to see the scope of the show and all my friends performing.
CP: Given The Lord Of The Rings’ hugely loyal fandom, were you at any point nervous about taking on a role in this spinoff show?
CV: Obviously there is a huge amount of pressure and expectations that come with being a part of a world that is so important to so many people, but that’s almost a good thing. Signing onto the show though, there was no hesitation. I didn’t know the full ins and outs of what I was signing onto, but there was still no doubt I wanted to be a part of it.
CP: And how has your life changed since the show’s release?
CV: I don’t go out into very busy settings that much, but, the few times I have been, I have been recognised and everyone has been very kind so I guess in that sense it has changed. But besides that, I tend to lead a quiet life so it hasn’t changed that much.
CP: Speaking of which, what does an average day in the life of Charlie Vickers look like?
CV: My work days and my days off are very different. On a work day, I’ll be picked up very early in the morning and I’ll film all day. But on a day off, I need sleep. Minimum nine hours. I do some exercise when I get up, have lunch and then just sit at my laptop and do some work. I also spend some time with friends and family and if I’m by the coast I’ll also go for a surf, but if I’m in London then I just try and do something fun for the day.
CP: You definitely cannot surf in London.
CV: There is a wave pool I think! But right now it’s limited, yeah.
CP: Where do you envision yourself as an actor in 10 years time?
CV: Working on a project of this magnitude has been amazing, but it’s also given me the desire to work on things completely different in the future. Smaller projects, like independent films or mini-series. I always look for new adventures in my work and I’m open to them in whatever form they may come.
CP: Finally, is anything else currently in the works?
CV: I filmed a mini-series in Australia based on the novel by Holly Ringland titled The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart. It’s a story about female resilience and generational trauma. I play the father. It’s a spectacular story and it will hopefully come out next year.

Storia Di Musica #291 - Deacon Blue, Raintown, 1987
Il disco ha un andamento ondeggiante tra brani calmi e riflessivi e quelli più incalzanti: l'inizio è davvero suggestivo, con Born In The Storm che come una nebbia si dirada e sfuma in Raintown, canzone che è profondamente legata all'esperienza di Ross, con versi che dicono "Waiting for the phone to ring to make me all I am.\You're in the suburbs waiting for somewhere to go\I'm down here working on some dumb show\In a raintown" che raccontano l'inizio di tutta la storia. He Looks Like Spencer Tracy Now è ispirata ad un pensiero, a che vita avesse fatto l'uomo che sganciò la bomba atomica su Hiroshima: tra incontri particolari ("he may have been with Oppenheimer, shaken Einstein's hand\Did we have to drop the bomb? You bet, to save this land\He was only taking pictures around the critical mass\While the troops on Tinian island sang 'Follow the bouncing ball') e cosa potrebbe essere oggi (He may have been a nationalist, a physicist or a pacifist (...) Well, I have seen that movie of Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde\And I know he looks like Spencer Tracy Now). When Will You (Make My Telephone Ring) ha ai cori il famoso gruppo R&B londinese dei Londonbeat. He calls her the chocolate girl\Cause he thinks she melts when he touches her\She knows she's the chocolate girl\Cause she's broken up and swallowed\And wrapped in bits of silver". I'll sail her up the west coast\Through villages and towns\I'll be on my holidays\They'll be doing their rounds\They'll ask me how I got her I'll say, "I saved my money"\They'll say, "Isn't she pretty? That ship called Dignity".

Yoje emailed on Patreon: "Greetings! After listening to the podcast almost a year, I finally got around to subscribing on Patreon  -  apologies it took so long. Though I noticed that with the RSS feed, I no longer get any of the podcast/album art when playing, which is especially noticeable since I listen to it regularly on my commute and my car screen shows a big generic musical note instead of the artwork! Any ideas what I may be doing wrong? Thanks again for an awesome podcast!"
Darren Mahoney commented on a Patreon post: "Would like to see more west coast Irish music content. Sean Daly (Shams), Stout pounders, Coming up three’s, Stark raving plaid, Whiskeydicks we have some great acts out here! 😁"
Charlie O'Brien emailed: "Hey Marc, My name is Charlie O'Brien, I'm a folk singer from Killarney. For the past two years I've been in Argentina researching and singing Irish trad songs printed in a rural paper in Buenos Aires in the late 1800's. Last month I released an album of these ballads "The Trackless Wild, Irish Song of the Pampa" during a Culture Ireland sponsored tour of Argentina with trad. fiddle player Aidan Connolly.
Here's a download link for the album, would be great if ye could give a song or two a spin on your podcast. I think you played songs from a previous album of mine "Hy Brasil" a few years back.  beir bua,"
