Daily Digest 5/1/23
It’s been quite a while since I’ve done one of these.
To be honest, it’s been quite a while since I’ve done any writing. I’ve recently figured out I can only split my focus on one Big Goal at a time and for the past year or so, that was my health.
Now that I’ve got that mostly under control I’m starting to shift back into writing mode.
And it feels 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥!
I got up this morning with the intention of heading to High Ground Coffee and spending three-ish hours writing with the OC Writers group, but mornings…
So I ended up getting there around 10:20 or so. I did get some words down and it felt weird and good trying to find that groove again.
But, it’s me and things never go as planned. I forgot to plug my computer in last night, so the battery was dead. And I don’t like actual writing with pen and paper because it’s slow and then I have to type everything over and it’s tedious and boring and I never do it. Pen and paper are for outlines and plotting.
But I did have my phone and of there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years it’s that I do my best work writing on my phone.
It’s weird. I went without a computer for over 3 years and during that time I wrote on my phone. I wrote at amusement parks, in line at the DMV, when traveling in planes, trains, and automobiles (but not while driving!).
I don’t know what it is about the tiny screen that lets the creativity flow, yet it does. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Lately, when I would be working on the laptop, I spend a good 30 minutes just staring at the blinking curser the entire time. But today, in the less than 30 minutes I spent actually writing today, I got in a solid 302 words.
Anyhoo, that’s about all I had time for today. It’s a day off the Day Job so I have errands to run (cats need to be fed, after all), and a birthday to celebrate—can you believe Dad turns 77 years young this year?—so we’re going out to dinner tonight. Tomorrow is a home day, so I should be able to bust out the rest of this story tomorrow.
On a side note, I set up my phone’s home screen with widgets and one of them is quotes and motivations. This was the one that popped up when I left my writing session. Fitting don’t you think? 😆
𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁
Story: 302
Web: 0
Social: 591
Total: 893
Here we are celebrating Dad’s birthday on Radiator Springs Racers. Shhh…🤫 Mom will kill me if she finds this picture online. Thankfully she doesn’t have Tumblr. 🤣

When I was in college, round about 2002 or so, I did a paper on hate groups that necessitated a couple of visits to Stormfront, a white supremacist website and message board. One of the pages on the site was a "children's page" operated by the child of Storrmfront's founder, which was a unique form of horrifying. But I also remember looking at a photo of the kid on the site and thinking, that poor fuckin' kid, what kind of chance did he ever have?
But it was just a paper and that was just a photo of a child I didn't know, so I turned in the paper and graduated and got on with life.
In 2016, @archwrites posted a link to an article by the Washington Post titled "The White Flight of Derek Black" (sorry about the paywall, Arch's post quotes some relevant parts here). I thought it looked like an interesting read: it was about a white supremacist named Derek Black and a group of campus activists at the school Black eventually attended, who set out to see if they could change his mind about race with radical kindness. In large part because of their work, Black eventually renounced white supremacy and became an antiracist.
And then I hit a photo in the article and gasped, because I recognized it. I'd seen the same photo on the Stormfront children's website. The kid I'd seen and pitied was grown up and had gotten out. Immensely satisfying to see.
But it was just a news story about someone I didn't even know, so I posted about how pleased I was to see it, and I got on with life again.
This morning, I woke to the news (sorry, it's the Daily Fail) that R. Derek Black, now 35, has just published a memoir, The Klansman's Son: My Journey from White Nationalism to Antiracism. And in the epilogue, they come out as trans.
I can't imagine better news I could have heard about them -- that they're out, they're thriving, and they're embracing themself.
Tumblr media
Congratulations, kid. It's a great new photo.
[ID: A recent photograph of R. Derek Black, with long curly red hair, wearing a floral collared shirt and a red cardigan, smiling for the camera.]

extremely fucked up that eating healthy makes me gassy. i decide i'm gonna have a nutritious bowl of quinoa, veggies, and lean meat for lunch and my body thanks me by giving me unbearable abdominal pain for the following six hours that can only possibly be relieved by getting into a yoga pose and ripping a ten second long uninterrupted fart. unbelievable

question: have any of you personally seen a dietician (not looking for experiences with nutritionists, only dieticians), and did you find it helpful or useful, and if you did see a dietician and you ALSO have seen a GI doctor, how did the experience compare for you in terms of helpfulness + how much you felt listened to and helped?
#i'm trying to figure out which doctor appointments I want to bother making and spending money about for potentially no return on investment#and right now i'm trying to figure out if I'd get way more practical help from a dietician or if I need to suck it up and find a#not-elderly not-male not-dismissive GI doctor first and THEN see a dietician#although I cannot afford a bunch of tests#so like???#trying to figure out if a dietician would be more helpful overall with me not HAVING any GI diagnoses or eating disorders#and just really struggling with food in both sensory ways and unpredictable digestion ways that don't correlate with food allergies#god i sometimes wish i had food allergies so i could have some predictability#but yeah. i'm leaning towards dietician but figured i should crowdsource experiences#since I know a lot of you have health issues you've also been trying to manage for years and probably have good advice#if it helps i'm also in a major city now and have a decent-but-not-great health insurance plan so I'm good on those two fronts#to do#health#I know a dietician can't diagnose anything but I'd love help figuring out how to get maximum nutrition even when i can barely eat anything#or when my body decides to start getting sick from or (tw emetophobia) puking up fiber or fatty foods#which thankfully isn't often#now that I do cannabis daily in microdosing I have so much less pain and bloating and nausea#but when it hits it HITS#and the last time I tried going without cannabis for a couple days and then eating a fiber muffin I was sick six times in one morning#and didn't get my normal eating ability back until dinnertime#luckily that's not normal for me#but my issues bounce up and down so much#and I lose weight so fast whenever my appetite goes from 'barely ever there' to 'negatively nonexistent'#and I had like. two months last year where I think i reached my body's natural healthy set weight#and i needed so much food but it felt so good energy wise and temperature wise#and i'd like to STAY THERE FFS#and I feel like a dietician would be helpful for making meal options for good#*good and hard and nuclear alert level eating difficulty times#anyway. crowdsourcing. yay!

Meant to link this sooner but life briefly got away from me -- tl;dr it was discovered last month that over 1500 ancient artefacts were stolen from the British Museum by a senior museum curator. Who has been selling them on eBay for years. (Allegedly. And possibly the museum knew about it much earlier and covered it up, given he was dismissed earlier this year; the theft was actually uncovered by someone who linked the curator's twitter and ebay accounts.)
Lots of talk these past two weeks about how this does not give the museum much of a leg to stand on the next time it tries to assert it's a better caretaker of Greek antiquities than, well, Greece. The marbles being returned in our lifetime is a stronger possibility than ever.
Been a bad year for the museum, aside from the blessing of my presence there in April...

so like sometimes it's only been a couple hours after you've eaten and you're wondering if you're wondering if you're hungry - but maybe you're just, like, hungry in your head, right? Not actually hungry? So you don't need to eat because that would be overeating, like at a buffet where you stop eating when your stomach feels like it's going to burst? wrong your stomach has an early warning system
no yeah fast forward to two hours later when you're kinda lowkey starving and you go, oh. huh. bodies don't lie.
listen to your organs y'all 😅
