Fandom Saturday, Astra: Lost in Space

Recommended to me by Hailey.

I'll admit, the overall idea of the anime intrigued me, but I started to get a little bored during it, until some of the big reveals came...

I did not expect it to go that way.

I listened to most of this anime in the background until the reveals came and at that point my eyes were glued to the screen. I almost want to rewatch it just because of the stuff I missed the first time.

I do have a few qualms with it though. I felt like for a bunch of kids that don't really know what they're doing, they had it extremely easy. Traveling 5012 lightyears away to get to home as ill experienced as they are should've come with a lot more losses, but they point that out in the end and I can appreciate the overall message they were trying to portray with that. Yes, it can be dangerous. It can be scary. But it's important to always move forward and to interpret things for yourself. If they had filled the trip with more hardship, then people would be more hesitant to travel and less curious.

Also, absolutely love Luca! I won't spoil why, but I really love how they a person like him. If you've seen the anime and enjoy his as well, I recommend reading this fic from tuuli, as she has a character going through a similar situation. (Don't you dare click on it tuuli! Spoilers. No!) But I also love his attitude about it. So many awkward scenes only made more awkward by him playing into it. XDXDXD Anyway, I love this kid. Not enough to adopt him into my harem, but I love him. He's my favorite. 💙 Incorrect quote, but... "What will you always remember?" Luca: "I'll remember being forced to strip naked in front of everyone at gunpoint on the beach." XD Oh my god, I'm dying...

I really liked it though. They were really creative with the habitats of the different planets they visited and it actually made me wonder for a moment if the creator was inspired by this space documentary on Netflix because they shared a lot of ideas with each other. 😅 But like I said, the twist? It really catches you by surprise. So I recommend putting it on in the background, paying some attention to it, and right around the last few episodes, it'll probably have you restarting the episode so you can watch it. It's just so good. And it's only 12 episodes long. Highly recommend. And yes, Kanata, it needed to have an ear pick and not a gun upgrade. XD

Fandom Saturday, Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

I finally watched the movie at the behest of my husband, and it was awesome. There were a few times when the lore had me feeling a little lost, but for the most part I was able to keep up with everything. To avoid any major spoilers, I'm just going to focus on a few things I picked up on that my hubby found unique. This was his third time watching it, and now he wants to watch it again because of what I pointed out.

All the women are badass.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I hate it when things are one-sided. Some of the men are weak or bumbling idiots, but literally every woman in there is a badass. The wife is the sweetest motivation, the daughter is surprisingly quick witted for her age, Michelle Rodriguez is Michelle Rodriguez, the Teafling is calm and cool and obviously their trump card, the ultimate sorceress is, well, the ultimate sorceress, and this is all well and good except it's horribly unbalanced by the fact that there are no women failures, no women struggles, nothing. Like, really? It'd only be really bad if there were no equally badass men though, and thankfully there is at least one, but it's still a bit unbalanced for my taste.

Second, it is so obvious that Doric is in love with Simon.

Now, they sort of ease the shipping of these two, but to me, it was fairly obvious. This is the main reason my husband wants to watch it again. Simon is the only one she responds to 95% of the time. Sure, a fair amount of it is insults, but she only insults Simon. Edgin says something stupid, she might respond, but Simon says something, and oh, she just has to put in her two cents about what a failure he is. She's always looking at him. She stands closest to him. She is so focused on him, it's ridiculous, and when I pointed this out, Deo was... extremely surprised he hadn't picked up on that, but it was true. After that, he noticed. When >insert heartstring dramatic end here< happened, who was she snuggled up to? During the fight, she was ready, but who did she first protect? (It certainly wasn't Michelle Rodriguez, but hey, she doesn't need protection. XD) And when Simon was feeling unconfident, who was there to insult him? Hm. That's an awful lot of focus on a human, in a group of humans, that she supposedly hates. Hmmm. XD

Anyway, it could be because I'm a writer myself, but I ended up calling just about everything in the movie. Like, something comes out and I'd say "oh, that's important", or "oh, they're not gonna use it for that but this", and everything was correct, but that still didn't take away from the movie. It was a really good movie and I highly recommend it. Thank you for joining me on my first Fandom Saturday in a while. ^^

After the Awataguchi's performance (and some others, which eventually devolved into some very lively karaoke), Yuichi and Kogitsunemaru walked their guests back to their room (complete with "please, don't hesitate to wake me up if you need something" and "join us in the dining hall in the morning!") and then each retreated to their own respective rooms to get some sleep after the long day.

Yuichi slept much easier than he had the few nights before. The antsy excitement and anxiety of meeting and hosting someone new was gone, and in its place the relief and pleasant surprise of indeed a new friend.

He rose early, though, and made sure to join Kasen in the kitchen to prepare a breakfast and tea for himself and Saseki to share-- much to Kasen's delight.

However, through the preparations, the ambient shhhhhhhhhh of the rain outside gradually grew fainter and fainter, until suddenly... It was quiet, save for just a few faint 'tap.....tap.......tap....' every so often.

Yuichi looked up from the broccoli he was chopping, and out the window. The rain seemed to have reduced to just a sprinkling, and the dreary gray that usually cloaked the citadel was brightening, just so.

"Oh," he smiled, then looking to Kasen, Shokudaikiri, and Ookurikara who had come to prepare breakfast together. "I think Saseki-san's gift has been saving its power for today..."

After a quick moment of contemplation, Yuichi set his knife and broccoli down and stood up. "Excuse me, guys. I'll be back shortly."

And indeed, he was back, after a few moments of checking and talking with Konnosuke.

"Once we're done with breakfast, you guys take the day off. I'll let everyone else know too, when it's time to eat-- I think everyone deserves a chance to enjoy the day, hm?"

"Oh? Are you sure, aruji?" Shokudaikiri inquired. "What about lunch and dinner? I don't mind, really--"

Yuichi raised a hand to pause him. "I've just checked our expenses, and we've been doing pretty decently on our spending for the most part. We have some money to play with, including enough to order something delivered... If you like, you can help me sort that out later, but I want you to get out of the kitchen and relax or have fun, okay?"

By the time everyone is in the dining hall, the sun is out in full, with only a few drip-drops scattering about. ("A fox wedding~," Kogitsunemaru remarks fondly.) Yuichi announces to everyone that today shall be a free day-- no chores, no field work, just... a day to enjoy the sun.

With his breakfast, he makes to meet with Saseki.
