while i'm riled up about it it is Fascinating to me the way that klingons are intentionally depicted as less advanced than humanity both technologically and culturally bc of their "warlike nature", creating an Other through which 24th century humans can define themselves as superior in relation to in a direct parallel to how 19th century anthropology helped white europeans define themselves as "more evolved" by depicting indigenous (especially african) populations as living fossils of earlier stages of evolution. by locating the Other as unevolved or a relic of the past you create a comforting fiction in which You are above such things (as war, as conquering, as everything klingons do that humanity wants to distance itself from) and its effective enough rhetoric that i've had trekkies in my replies telling me the klingons are like that bc they "never advanced past their medieval age"

Hey guys. This was posted by my friend Mohammed Ayesh, who's the on-the-ground vetter for our list of verified fundraisers. Despite the horrifying situation, he maintains a smile. He has lost a lot of weight, something that saddens me to see.

i think it's important to acknowledge that the reason why mastercard/visa has such a stranglehold on american society is because cash is not the main form of payment in the usa. the predominance of card has effectively privatized currency

in japan, one of the reasons why dlsite and other similar websites are able to just remove visa as a payment option instead of changing any of their merchandise (aside from the fact that visa doesn't have a monopoly here) is because cash payments for online transactions remain an option. even if you don't have a jcb credit card or paypay or whatever, you can still pay for your online purchases using cash by taking your barcode to a convenience store, and you can do this for essentially every online vendor, meaning credit card companies can't just impose their moral judgments on your purchases with much repercussion

I don't think people should be using ChatGPT as a therapist, because best case scenario is the computer says some platitudes and at least nothing gets worse, worst case scenario it'll end up reinforcing whatever unhealthy thought patterns they may have because the computer has been trained to be a sycophant. But I'm going to be real, I don't think "you're actually morally tainted if you talk to the computer" and being an annoying scold about it is in any way the right way to get people to stop doing it.

And I don't mean that in a "you need to sugarcoat the harsh reality" kind of way, because there actually isn't any harsh truth being imparted onto a person by going "oh you sweet summer child" and then telling them how flawed of a human being they are for relying on generative AI for comfort. It's just tiresome moralizing.

If you want to actually help these people you kind of need to cut out the "these people are bad for talking to the AI" part, and actually think about why they're talking to the AI. Could that be indicative of a bigger social issue? Something that you can't just scold people out of? If the issue is that you feel they shouldn't be talking to an LLM and instead talking to a therapist, could there be a reason as to why they are not talking to a therapist? Could there be an explanation for this that doesn't hinge on "this person is bad and lazy?"
