Hey Squiggles how are you doing?? I just want to let you know that we finally have Oscar merch and the art on the shirt is fantastic !!!!
Hey there Dagger. I’ve been alright, thanks for asking. Hope you’ve been good as well during these times m’fam. Also thank you so much for informing me of the new Oscar merch. I honestly wouldn’t have known about if you hadn’t told me first since RT didn’t announce it over on Twitter until shortly after I heard it from you XD. You had one job RT marketing team.
Either way, jokes aside, needless to say I am in LOVE with the new Einlee artwork of Oscar. While I doubt I’ll be able to actually buy any RT merch, I am super glad that my favourite little prince got some new grandspanking merch.
My one gripe is that I wished his shirt was available in more colours besides white. It’s not even Oscar’s signature green or orange. I mean I get the reason why Oscar’s shirt is white since it contrasts with the all black of Salem’s shirt to proclaim the concept of Oscar being the antithesis to Salem as a Wizard of Light and Ozma’s current incarnation/successor. I just would’ve loved to see more options for more colours available for this design. But I digress.
I also noticed that Double D Rivas was spotted sporting Oscar’s shirt in the marketing photos. How ironic how the dude who singlehandedly wrote two of my least favourite Oscar episodes is the one to wear his shirt? Damn you Eddy =x=)9
Overall, did I mentioned how much I love Einlee’s Oscar art. I mean it is SO GOOD. Look how badass m’boi looks. I hope the showrunners don’t stop at just this shirt. I really hope to see more Oscar-worthy merch come out. I’m still waiting on an Oscar-themed hoodie.
Last year for RTX at home, they announced a Penny and Neo hoodies so prayer circle for an Oscar hood to manifest next. Nothing against dem T-shirts but as a lover of both Oscar and hoodies, I’d love to see one done for Oscar but who knows?
Other than that, this is great news. A bit sus since we’re nearing the V8 finale tomorrow---which makes me wonder what’s in store for us . Buuuuut good news all the same. Thanks for informing me again Dagger.

Hey, I am new to fandom of RWBY. I started watching because my friend needed a friend to watch the show with, so I did. I noticed how Oscar and Ruby have a lot of mini moments, like WAY TOO MUCH for someone who just came into the light. So I am wondering what do you think of Rosegarden? I dont wanna be a shipper yet, but I am drawn towards them, plus I think the ship is interesting with the fact Oscar has two souls.
Hiya! It’s awesome that you watched RWBY so your friend would have someone to watch with! I hope you’re enjoying it too.
Ruby and Oscar did have a bunch of moments right away! I absolutely love Rosegarden, and I’d be happy to talk about how I started shipping them. I’ll talk about Oz too. It’ll probably be long so I’ll put in a readmore. I think Ruby and Oscar’s bond will grow to be important in the show, whether it is friendship or romance, but concerning my own reasons for shipping them and why... here we go!These are my own personal thoughts and that’s all.
So Ruby and Oscar’s interactions were super cute and adorable since the second they met in episode 1 of Volume 5. I had the feeling there would be something between them, but didn’t want to get ahead of myself.
In episode 3 of Vol. 5, they were super cute again and all smiling and kindaaa blushing at each other. Ruby was genuinely curious about him and they were both sort of fascinated with each other. REALLY... They had me.
Then they were sparring partners! I love that scene for a million reasons, but I’m gonna skip to the 5th episode. It wasn’t until THAT SCENE IN THE DOJO... that I officially started shipping them.
Ruby isn’t really one to open up about the things truly bothering her, for numerous reasons. And we hadn’t seen Oscar open up to anyone about the things happening with him either, or how he felt about it. But in this moment they did open up to each other. Oscar admitted how terrified he was and Ruby went into how she was honestly scared too. Everything she shared about the events of Volume 3 and how she feels about going against Salem and why really opened Oscar’s eyes and helped him look at his situation differently. And that was the first time Ruby finally talked about it with someone. She also cried in front of him, which... Ruby usually doesn’t do in front of anyone. I’m not saying Ruby hasn’t cried in front of others, because she has, but she doesn’t in front of just anyone. Oscar also cried in front of her, and it’s been the only time he’s cried on screen. They trust each other. I say “cry,” but they both kind of just shed a tear. And Ruby telling Oscar that his trying says a lot about him, and that he’s braver than he thinks. All of this lifted him up, and while he was still scared, he was determined to do his absolute best to do his part and help them all. I loved that scene so much.
I want to go further than this but I’m not sure if you have finished Volume 5? I also have so much to say about Volume 6, but I don’t want to spoil everything!
About Oscar having two souls, that’s something that’s always debated within the fandom, especially concerning Rosegarden. But Oscar and Oz are two separate souls, and Ruby treats them as two different people entirely. Because they are two separate people. The way she acts and talks around Oscar and Oz is completely different depending on who is in control. Oscar needs a friend who sees him for him. Ruby was the first one to really do that, and treated Oscar as Oscar, and talked to Oscar about his own feelings, and just... she was the first one to care about Oscar. Like actually care about him, who he is and if he was alright. Because everyone else, especially in the beginnings of Vol. 5, only cared about the Oz part of Oscar. I have so much more to say on this with information given to us in Volume 6...! To sum it up, Rosegarden is between Ruby and Oscar. Not Ruby and Oz. There is a clear distinction between both of them and how Ruby feels toward them.
Other random things: They constantly have each other’s back in battle, they are equals, they both love reading, they’re both super socially awkward and while they’re sometimes awkward with each other too, they’re clearly comfortable around each other. And they both just want to help. Also, Oscar totally admires and looks up to Ruby which is super cute. The whole thing is very cute and pure.
ANYWAYS, this was my own personal experience and the beginnings of how I started shipping them as much as I do now. I probably left some out. Ruby and Oscar hit me so hard and I love them so much. They’re so blushy and adorable and certainly care about each other a lot, and I can’t wait to see them grow closer and closer as friends or even something more.

Lionhearted Foreshadowed Oscar getting kidnapped in volume 5?
Hey Dagger o/ Yes he did to some degree. Back in V5, during their fight in Battle of Haven, after Lionheart discovered that Oz had been reincarnated into Oscar, he made a remark about capturing and offering him to Salem as a sort of bargain for his own freedom.
“…Wait, you can’t have had this form for long. You’re not really Ozpin right now. A boy. A child. If I deliver you to Salem, she’ll have to be pleased with me and I can finally get out of all of this. I can finally be free!” –
Leonardo Lionheart (RWBY Volume 5: Chapter 11- The More the Merrier)

I am praying. For Oscar's safety!! Be strong farmboi!!
At this point Dagger, nothing would please me more than to see Oscar kick Hazel’s fat ass. I’m not sure if you’ve ever watched Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Family Reunion, but in that film, one of the characters was in an abusive relationship with a man she was supposed to marry. And at the end of that movie, Madea gave her some advice to “put some hot grits on the stove, throw it in their face and then beat them with a frying pan”. So that’s exactly what happened in the end. The character got to have their revenge for all the times her abuser hurt them by going to town on them when they dared show up at where they were staying to try to force them to marry them.
This is the type of comeuppance I want to see Oscar get on Hazel now. I used to root for a possible Hazel redemption arc but as of this episode. As of that particular scene---no more. NEVERMORE. Now I want Oscar to beat Hazel’s ass like Tina Turner did Ike in “What Love Got to Do With It”.
And I want Oscar to do it as himself. Not as Ozpin. Or Ozma. But as Oscar Pine. I still believe in Oscar coming out differently and possibly even stronger than his predecessors---Ozma included.
And one good way of highlighting Oscar’s strength of will and character is to have him beat Hazel in combat on his own and…maybe even escape captivity on his own without the need to be rescued by the other heroes.
And even if George shows up to apprehend Oscar for a second time, I want Oscar to once again prove his strength and growth by taming the very beast that brought him to Salem.
It would be the biggest proverbial middle finger for Oscar to give to Salem if he, not only, beats up Hazel (and any other people she might put to break him) and then makes his daring escape on the back of the very same beast that she used to capture him.
I hope the showrunners at least give my boi that but…who knows?

Hey! I also heard the news that Miles is leaving RT. I am not too surprised since I feel his involvement in the show has become smaller and smaller as time as went on.
Hiya Dagger!
Really? Aww okay, cool :o To be honest I didn’t quite notice that. With all due respect to Miles, the only time I pay attention to him is in regards to his work on RWBY (and whatever RT animated project he’s attached to like RVB, Camp Camp and Gen:Lock to some degree) so if he has been edging away from the show, I wouldn’t really notice.
Since he’s leaving RT and only working with them on contract, the most I can do is wish him all the best in his next endeavors.
Makes me curious to see the chapters he worked on for V8. Still doesn’t shake the odd feeling in my gut that finds this departure weird. But this is just me.

I just answered an ask on my blog directing someone to the tracks!
TELL ME THAT TRACK 22 IS NOT THE SAME AS WHEN BEAST TRANSFORMS BACK INTO HIS HUMAN FORM AND RETURNS TO BELLE.
YOU CAN'T. BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT IT IS.

Did you hear that Rosegarden is getting a possibly panel discussion and/ or chat. Where fans can talk to Aaron Dismuke and Lindsay Jones as Ruby and Oscar at...I think Galaxycon. Blake and Yang have a similar chat/panel too. I think it is cool that CRWBY is becoming more comfortable with the idea of Rosegarden happen.
…I’m sorry…WHAAAT?! O_o)
Dagger, m’dear fam, are you pulling this hopeless romantic of a squiggly Rosegardening Pinehead’s leg right now with this news? In all seriousness, where did you hear this from because it’s actually interesting that there might actually be panel with Aaron and Lindsey as the main guests? Usually Lindsey solely panels with the cast of Team RWBY (plus MK of CRWBY Writers) and while Aaron doesn’t have much panels, I’ve mainly seen him in panels with the members of JNPR and Ozpin (like the time he was at a panel with the voice actress for Nora Valkyrie and of course, Mr. Shannon McCormick himself)
So…it’s kind of suspiciously interesting that here we can potentially have the FIRST panel that Aaron and Lindsey will attend together right before V8. It makes me curious if some development for Ruby and Oscar is expected to happen for the new season. Not trying to jump to conclusion here but this does make me very curious indeed 83c
Other than that, I guess I have a con stream to tune into (somehow) since I’ll definitely be interested in a con featuring the Rosebuds’ Vas. Hell yeah! But before I get too gushy and excited, I need to know if this news is legit. For real, where did you here this Dagger? Explain thy source, fair messenger.

...So about the ORNJ_JNPR T-shirt thing...
daggerpawstudios asked
“Okay I am the only confused by all the hate that Oscar is getting right now because they dropped some new merch at the RT Store. I am not sure if you heard that Team JNPR got called Team ORNJ on the new shirt. I feel like this is kind of a mistake on the marketing team's part and not really CRWBY. But now a lot of people are attacking RG shippers and Oscar fans and I don't really understand because it seems more like fragile egos”
Squiggles Answers:
@daggerpawstudios
Hey there Dagger. Well to be honest with you fam, this squiggle meister has sort of been out of the RWBY loop for the past few months. Got a work project so I haven’t been as active as I normally would be in my squiggle shire here on Tumblr.
Nevertheless, I did sort of know about the shirt thing. I first heard the news from a tweet from RWBY Youtuber Calxiyn it over on Twitter. I then saw RWBY Youtuber ThatKaitoDan mention Oscar replacing Jaune as leader of Team JNPR in his own tweet post as well but I didn’t know the full context of what he meant by that until you brought this to my attention.
I didn’t know that RT had actually listed the shirt as Team ORNJ which in their case is…well…a big OOF on their part. Personally, I don’t think this is something that folks in the FNDM should be making a big hullabaloo about. I think it’s an obvious PR mistake on the marketing department who run the RT store releases since no offense to RT and whoever is in charge of promotion on their online store but…their record of “getting things right” their store especially with the FNDM hasn’t exactly been squeaky clean in the past.
Besides, another obvious giveaway to me as to why I think it’s more likely to be a minor error is the very fact that Jaune’s silhouette is still first in line.
Think about it. If Oscar had really usurped Jaune as leader of the team then why isn’t his silhouette first in the line up?
Isn’t it not a golden rule of thumb that the leaders of each huntsmen team always appear first in the team line-up whenever they do the silhouette thing as we’ve seen previously with teams like RWBY and even the Ace Ops?
Anyone with decent vision can clearly see that that’s Jaune’s silhouette at the front of the line. Not Oscar. If Oscar was truly the new leader of the team then why is he the third silhouette?
If thing had really turned ORNJ, then the order should be Oscar, Ren, Nora and finally Jaune. But as you can clearly see, the order is Jaune, Ren, Oscar and Nora.----THE SAME ORDER THAT WAS FEATURED IN THE VOLUME 7 OPENING! Or did folks…y’know…forget that?
I know V7 ended earlier in the year but have folks forgotten the season already with its opening sequence? After Team RWBY, we got the JNPR 2.0 gang and the order in which JNR and Oscar appear matches the T-shirt with Jaune being first, then Ren, then Oscar and finally Nora. So there you go.
So I wouldn't worry too much about that Dagger. I agree with you in thinking that it was a simple error made by the RT store. However, that being said, the other part about people stirring discourse over this and worst yet attacking the Pinehead and Rosegarden community over this…do I even need to say how silly that sounds.
Much like with the ridiculous discourse that arose after the small Rosegarden moment in V7CH9, this is yet another classic example of certain-certain folks literally scraping the bottom of the barrel and using any excuse they could find to harp on something they don't like while unfairly accosting the people who do.
I feel really bad for my fellow Pineheads, Rosegardeners and Rosegardening Pineheads who were victims of this time of foolishness. Because that's what this all sounds like to my ears. Foolish fools acting foolish yet again.
Seriously, what does Oscar as a character or even Rosegarden as a ship have to do with something that was posted by the RT store and is clearly an error made by the people who run it?
Are certain-certain folks truly that desperate to stir up drama and conflict that they would honestly seep so low as to use a T-shirt design as fuel for an easy argument?
The Pinehead, Rosegarden and Rosegardening Pinehead communities get enough flak as it is but this is just...beyond silly!
I'm not implying that the hate brigade should train their anger on RT but how silly can you be to take something as a T-shirt design to that level of seriousness? Especially when the design more or less outs its own error. Am I missing something here? Is there another unknown part to this where the CRWBY Writers came out and confirmed that this is legit? Because otherwise, this is just…so…LIKE SERIOUSLY DUDE?!
I like RWBY a lot and in spite of my own personal gripes and nit-picks with the direction of the show at times in terms of its writing and treatment of the characters and their respective relationships and arcs---in spite of all that, I still actively enjoy the show and I’m still invested in seeing where the CRWBY Writers take it to the very end. However I’d be lying if all the constant discourse from the more “toxic” side of FNDM isn’t slowly starting to chip away at my excitement for the series. I can live with RWBY having flaws but what I don’t need are folks constantly going out of their way to use any excuse they could to express their own personal gripes with show; going as far as to abuse others in the process. That kind of stuff isn’t cool and it’s not good to witness through the eyes of someone who wants to enjoy the show or is at least trying to...y’know what I mean?
When I first heard the news of the JNPR shirts, I was excited. Not only is this the first merch we’ve gotten of JNPR in some time but it’s also the second merch to feature Oscar.
In case folks don’t realize, Oscar doesn’t have a lot of his own merchandise sold by RT which sucks for us Pineheads.
At least the OG JNPR/JNR have a couple of merchandise (albeit not as popular or abundant as Team RWBY’s but still there).
But Oscar…not so much and the same can be said for Ozpin too. It took RT six whole seasons to release ONE T-SHIRT DESIGN with Oscar and Oz on the front and even that was sort of short-lived since I don’t see that shirt advertising in the store anymore. It’s always the same ole Team RWBY stuff.
So with that in mind, this shirt was a first and a given. It’s so great to see Oscar together with JNR on a shirt because in a way, it makes it more official that he is a member of their group especially for those of us who were rooting for this to happen since V5.
I still don’t think it means that he is the leader because as I’ll say again, look at the order on the shirt design. Oscar is third. Right where Pyrhha used to be. How can he be leader and be third in the line-up? Oscar is meant to replace Pyrhha, not Jaune.
In the case of this whole ORNJ JNPR T-shirt scandal, I don’t understand how on Earth a clear marketing typo could reach as far as to spark discourse for a fictional character of a series, his fans and the fans of one of his ships? AGAIN!
What does Team JNPR (or whatever they will be called) being miswritten as Team ORNJ has to do with us Pineheads, Rosegardeners and Rosegardening Pineheads? How are we as a fan community responsible for an error made by RT?
Even if there are Pineheads who think this should be official--NOT speaking for myself here but I have seen other Pineheads express their desire to see Oscar lead JNPR for their own reasons---still, this is no excuse to harp on someone for liking it just because you don’t.
You’re right Dagger; this doesn’t make sense to me either.
All I can say is that it is what is it. Another example of certain-certain folks using any excuse to harp on something they don’t like while trying to drag others down with them and/or ruin their good vibes.
Seriously these types of folks are honestly scraping at the bottom of the barrel. I’m surprised they’re still able to see after sinking so low with their foolishness. If that sounds a bit too harsh then sorry; not sorry.
Ever since the whole discourse over the minor Rosegarden moment for V7CH9, I have lost all patience with these types of fans. I honestly find them to be as dumb as their behaviour and it exhausts me just hearing about them and their nonsense.
Losing their marbles and attacking my people over a bloody T-shirt error that ain’t got nothing to do with us.
SO...DAMN...SILLY!
I hope RT clears this up at some point. And even if they don’t, I really don’t see why people should believe this means anything. I certainly don’t.
Not like I want that to happen either. In my opinion, I was never in favour of ORNJ---at least, not right now when Oscar is still a teenager growing into his duties and responsibilities as a huntsman. To me, I only like the idea of Team ORNJ from the perspective of Jaune retiring/stepping down from his role as leader of a huntsman team; instead choosing to pass the torch onto Oscar after the former farm boy had matured into a fine huntsman under his team’s guidance and after proving himself in the eyes of his teammates, especially Jaune.
Y’know that kind of idea.
This is why I always referred to JNR and Oscar as JNPR 2.0. I want JNR to become Oscar’s team and surrogate brothers and sister in arms. I want Oscar and Jaune to have a close big brother-little brother type of dynamic where Oscar admires Jaune’s strength and leadership and looks up to him alot as both a close confidant (much like Ruby) and teammate while Jaune himself admires Oscar’s tenacity after everything he’s been through while making it his role to look out for him along with Nora and Ren.
This doesn’t mean I want Oscar to replace Jaune as team leader nor do I think he should.
I’ve heard some folks rationalize that Oscar should lead JNR since he is Ozpin’s successor. Nothing against the folks who like this concept but if I were to add my $2.50 to this, I don’t think Oscar being Oz’s successor should automatically qualify him to take over JNR; y’know what I mean?
Jaune earned his place as leader of JNPR after proving his talent for leadership back in V1.
The only time that Jaune took a step back was when Ruby led the group as RNJR between V4 and V5 since at the time, the trio were aiding Ruby with her objective to get to Mistral, as Ren said. But even then, Jaune was still a leader and backed up Ruby’s calls with his own strategies.
Not to mention that folks seem to be forgetting that Ozpin was the one who chose Jaune to lead JNPR.
Though we never got a scene of Jaune confronting Oz on his decision to make him team leader like we did with Ruby Rose in “The Badge and the Burden” episode (I think that was the title. Correct me if I’m wrong), much like Ruby, Oz picked Jaune and was of sound mind when he did. Oz picked Jaune to lead since despite his past hiccups and shortcomings, he saw that Jaune also had the makings of a great leader as shown during JNPR’s first fight against the Deathstalker.
So the whole notion of Oscar getting to be leader of JNR JUST BECAUSE he’s Oz’s successor EVEN THOUGH it was Oz’s decision to choose Jaune to be leader of JNPR in the first place---yeah that doesn’t sit right with me.
Jaune is meant to be a leader and JNPR is his team to lead; even with Oscar joining it. Sorry ORNJ-fans. But that’s where I stand on that.
Anyways, that’s all I have to say on this subject. I hope I answered you Dagger.

Honestly, Squiggles I share you annoyance with Volume 8 only lasting 1 to 2 days. I was really looking forward to Oscar and Oz bonding and reconnecting. Maybe we would even get a flashback of Oscar on the farm and actually see his family. Sadly, we wont since too much will be going on for anyone to feel anything, apparently. I expected this story to go on for months so we can Witness Oscar and Ruby missing each other. I WAS hoping that Ruby would actually feel bad for what she did.
Thanks Dagger. I’m glad to hear that I’m not the only person not really feeling the aster from this new RWBY news. To be more frank, I’m more feeling the mode (to quote Robin and Impulse from Young Justice). I’m not sure if you saw my last response post to @keyenuta but after some more thought, I’m starting to see the 1-2 days decision as being not too bad. At least, it’s not so bad when I think about it from the perspective of what if…the CRWBY Writers pulled an Avenger’s Endgame at the very start of V8?
I’m starting to dig the concept of…what if…V8 began with our heroes learning of Oscar’s presumed death from the start leading to them spending the volume dealing with the impact of his death on the team; particularly the members closest to Oscar (meaning Ruby, Jaune, Nora and Ren).
Here’s how I’m looking at it:
What if…in the first chapter of V8, the volume kicks off exactly where the last season left us. Salem has officially arrived in Atlas and is demanding that the kingdom be surrendered to her or face destruction. Let’s say in the wake of Salem making her assault on Atlas, our heroes get wind of Qrow and Robyn being imprisoned and taken to Atlas Prison. This is after Jaune also informs the group that Oscar went off to do something on his own and didn’t come back which just sends red flags to Jaune who is more or less having Pyrhha flashbacks.
Therefore…what if… RWBY V8 CH1 throws us straight into a rescue mission where our heroes decide to take a chance to return to Atlas with their goal being to rescue their captured comrades---using Ironwood dealing with Salem’s arrival as a distraction.
At the start of Endgame, we began the movie with our heroes learning of Thanos’ whereabouts and in the first few minutes of the movie, we got them tracking Thanos down, apprehending him---realising that he had destroyed the Infinity Stones and their last chance of saving their loved ones lost to “the snap”, all culminating in Thor killing Thanos by decapitation. As the audience, we got all of that within the first few scenes of the movie before the title sequence.
So I like the concept of V8 beginning with a similar feel. First episode is our heroes seeing that Salem has arrived alongside discovering that three of their allies were captured. So the story for the first episode is focused on the rescue mission to save Qrow, Robyn and Oscar. I’ve started to dig the idea of V8 starting like this right off the bat and by the end of the very first episode, much like in Endgame, the chapter ends with Ruby and friends learning that they failed to save Oscar since their actions lead to Ironwood “killing” Oscar as a result of their betrayal of his trust.
Perhaps it can even conclude similarly to how the first portion of Endgame concluded---upon learning that Oscar was dead---it’s a case where everything goes blurry for everyone involved---Ruby especially. Basically picture a moment where Ironwood announce that Oscar is dead and it leads into a moment where time practically stops for Ruby---everything becomes blurry for her to the point that she doesn’t even realize that the group had run out of time for their little rescue mission and needed to leave. It basically takes both Yang and Weiss grabbing Ruby and dragging her away for her to finally move.
Part of the reason why I’ve been anticipating the reactions of the group learning of Oscar’s “death” is to see Ruby’s reaction most of all since a part of me strongly believes that this could be a really good segway for the PLOT to delve into Ruby’s repressed emotions of losing her mother and finally address how her death has affected her both emotionally and psychologically.
Given how it was briefly mentioned by Yang way back in V2 how young Ruby took to her mother’s death and given how we had that scene from last season where Ruby practically fell apart at the mere mention of her mother by Salem---I would very much like for V8 to finally address this lingering elephant in the room and the alleged loss of Oscar would’ve been a good parallel to lead into that. At least in my opinion.
This is why I’m now very, VERY curious to see how V8 will start. Because now that I think about it, regardless of whether or not the story for the season will take place over 1-2 days; there is still a chance for it to more or less hit all the emotional benchmarks that some of us Pineheads and Rosegardening Pineheads wish to see in respect to the growing bond between our two smaller, more honest souls.
For all we know, V8 could be just like V6 in terms of time line. As I’ll reiterate, V6 took place over the span of 4 days after a time jump of 2 weeks. So…who’s to say something similar won’t be done for V8? As far as I know, the only thing that was confirmed by the CRWBY is that the events of V8 will take place over 1-2 days.
Will those 1-2 days happen AFTER another brief time jump like in V6? That’s what I’ll wait to see confirmed or not.
Personally I’m willing to let the whole 1-2 days decision slide if another momentary time jump was done AFTER where V7 left things off. Just like V6. Let V8 kick off where V7 ended. Let us have the failed rescue mission resulting in the team learning of Oscar’s death while Atlas falls to Salem. Then from V8CH2, let the actual story kick off after a time jump of a couple of weeks. I’m hoping it’s something like that and that’s the small inkling of hope I’m going to cling to for now.
Other than that, I think the whole Ruby and Oscar missing each other can still be done for you, Dagger. Think of it like this, fam. Imagine…part of Ruby’s development for next season involving her as our so-called indomitable spark of hope being forced to lead her team in the wake of Atlas and its people falling prey to Salem and her army all the while repressing her feelings over Oscar’s “death” just as how she repressed her feelings over her mother’s death?
Imagine…watching Ruby be all nonchalant over her grief to the point beginning to affect her actions---making her more reckless and moodly---only for her to ultimately suffer a meltdown at some point because of it?
And imagine if…at the same time Ruby is having her breakdown over her feelings of losing Oscar mixed in with her feelings over her mother, let’s say…somewhere in another part of Mantle; Oscar is having his own little meltdown moment as being on his own is starting to make him lose hope as well.
In the Little Prince story, there is a point in the tale where the Prince discovers a rose garden which causes him to abandon his feelings for his rose. Perhaps….there could be a point in both Ruby and Oscar’s respective stories where both children lose themselves in their emotions sparked by their feelings for each other and in that moment, they both simultaneously either realize just how much they truly meant to each other.
I can probably say more about this but bottom-line, what I’m mostly saying is that the Rosebuds realizing their feelings for each other can still be done Dagger. It might be done differently than we anticipated but…I think it can still be done. I want to believe it can still be done.
Despite the part of me that’s peeved by this writing decision by the CRWBY Writers---nevertheless, after more thought, I think things can still be done especially if it’s done like Endgame. While I wanted to have the team learn of Oscar’s death later in the volume, I actually think it wouldn’t be so bad if the volume starts off with our heroes already learning of Oscar’s death and we spent the season seeing how it has impacted them; particularly those closest to Oscar (i.e. Ruby, Jaune, Nora and Ren).
We’ll have to wait and actually see how V8 kicks off but in the meantime, that’s how this squiggle meister is going to look at it from now on. I hope this alternative perspective can help you feel a bit more optimistic fam.

Hey Squiggles, I saw your post about Ruby being the hero to stop Salem. I think you're onto something! I recently re-watched V6C3 to put in more into perspective.Ozma was never tasked to stop Salem but to reunite humanity so everyone can live in peace and restore magic to its former glory. I have always thought Sliver Eyes was the way to stop Salem since they can destroy grimm. Plus, it would explain why Salem hunted all the SEW down...Why else would she if they weren't a threat to her.
Exactamundo m’dear Dagger. That’s basically the same deduction I made too. Then again, the way how I’m looking at it now is, I believe Salem firstly targeted the Silver Eyed Warriors purely due to them being a threat to the Grimm. When we first learnt of the Silver Eyed Warriors back during the finale of V3, Qrow mentioned that the Silver Eyes were feared by the Grimm given their ability to immediately eradicate them with their power.
It was also mentioned in V5 by Raven Branwen that Salem is the leader of the Grimm. It would make sense since currently Salem is the only being in Remnant who is able to control and create the Grimm---a power that one belonged only to the God of Darkness.
The God of Darkness was the original Master of Grimm as their creator. Now Salem has unintentionally become his successor inheriting such abilities after diving into the depths of the God’s Grimm Pools. I’m sticking to my guns on the Grimm Pools being what granted Salem reign over the Grimm. It makes sense since she was never shown to possess this ability until after her baptism into darkness. This detail was also foreshadowed briefly by Jinn during the Lost Fable after Ozma had reincarnated into the body of Diggs and went searching throughout New Remnant to find Salem until his travels brought him to her disgruntled hut in the dark woods.
“…Ozma had found himself in a world completely unfamiliar to him. Cities look different. Creatures known as the Faunus bore fangs and claws and were locked away in cages. And without the blessing of the Gods; no one could perform magic like mankind was once capable of. No one but himself and a woman known as the Witch.
During his years of travel, he heard the same frightened whispers that spoke of a terrifying sorceress who commanded dark powers in the wilds amongst the beasts and monsters. Ozma was convinced that this witch was Salem…”
“…A terrifying sorceress who commanded dark powers in the wilds amongst the beasts and monsters…”
So bearing that in mind, one could concur that Salem didn’t possess the ability to rule over the Grimm until she fell into Grimm Pools. Right now, the Creatures of Grimm who were once described as humanity’s greatest threat is under Salem’s command, thus in turn making Salem just as much of a threat as the Grimm as she is there master.
This brings me back to my original point. I think Salem only hunted the Silver Eyed Warriors at first since they were a threat to the Grimm.
If the Silver Eyes possessed such an ability and such a power became more common knowledge then more people might’ve began to have more faith in the Silver Eyes and thus, loose fear over the Grimm.
As evidenced before, Salem exists to divide the people. Any shred of hope she sees, she will do everything in the her power to snuff it out. The Silver Eyed Warriors were no exception.
The Silver Eyes were killed because their power posed a threat to Salem’s army of Grimm.
However, I don’t think Salem realized how much a threat the Silver Eyed Warriors were to her until she encountered one for herself.
This is why I’m digging my hunch about Summer Rose being the first Silver Eyed Huntress who came close to harming Salem with her power.
If Salem’s scars were to come from one source, this squiggle meister believes it’s from Summer.
Either that or…Salem’s scar came as a result of her encounter with the First Silver Eyed Warrior to walk Remnant’s depths and it’s that particular Silver Eyes’ bloodline that the Roses----meaning Ruby Rose and her mother Summer Rose---are descended from.
I once shared a small RWBY Musing around the possibility of what if…Ruby is a descendent of the first Silver Eyed Warrior to walk Remnant?
Because that’s an origin story we still have yet to see. If Ozma was the first Wizard of Light, then who was the First Silver Eyed Warrior? What’s their story like and how does it connect to Salem?
Not sure if we’ll ever get these answers within the series anytime soon but for now, I strongly want to believe that Summer’s death had something to do with Salem earning her scars.
I really think it’s a case where Summer must’ve figured out that her powers were derived from the Fountain of Life and Creation that belonged to the God of Light. It was also the Fountain of Life and Creation that caused Salem’s immortality after Light dropped her into its depths.
Therefore…it wouldn’t surprise me if Summer somehow made this discovery on her own and based on these findings, she determined that the Silver Eyes might just be humanity’s chance at stopping Salem giving its ancient connection to her.
So using that info, Summer set out to kill Salem herself since she was the only being in Remnant with the power to do so. This ties into my hunch where I believe that Summer is the first Silver Eye who came close to actually touching Salem.
But of course, Summer failed in her mission but not before leaving a lasting impression on Salem in the form of the vein-like markings we see on the Witch’s body.
I think Summer caused that with her power. I think Summer Rose came close to stopping Salem but failed in her sacrifice. Now Ruby may be what is needed to finish the job; taking over where her mother left off. That’s my theory for now.
While Summer’s death may have been in vain, I don’t think it was for nothing either.
I think Summer revealed something about Salem when she chose to challenge her. While she failed and didn’t live to reveal this truth to others, I do think the truth is recorded somewhere. In history---the chronicled stories of time and space itself.
As revealed in V6, while the Lamp of Knowledge can’t reveal the future, it can reveal the past.
And do you know what’s story from the past we desperately need to know right now?
What really happened to Summer Rose?
Here’s what I’m thinking : We’ve all been theorizing the possibility of Ruby or someone else asking Jinn for a way to stop Salem that we’ve neglected one other significant possibility.
Do you know what would be an interesting twist? What if… instead of asking Jinn for a way to stop Salem, Ruby instead asks the knowledgeable genie of the lamp to answer a question that we know has been bugging our little red rose for a long time.
What if…for the final question, Ruby asks Jinn to show her the truth about what really happened to her mother?
“…Jinn, what happened to my mother?”
And in doing this, Jinn’s revealation of the past surrounding Summer’s death simultaneously reveals Salem’s vulnerability to the power of the Silver Eyed Warrior---thus revealing to Ruby that the one person who can stop Salem is her as she is the last living Silver Eyed Warrior.
BOOM! There’s your story right there.
But y’know…as always, these are only just my squiggly theories.

Hey squiggle I watched a livestream review of chapter 9 on youtube that said that Cinder would most likely go after Oscar for the relic and while Neo tries to attack ruby or maybe they both would attack him placing oscar in danger....what are ypur thoughts...
Heyo Dagger! Hmm. Here’s the thing with that from my perspective:
I’ve never gotten the impression that Cinder cared that much about gathering the Relics. The only time we’ve seen her pursue them was on behalf of Salem. But now that Salem has disowned her former apprentice, Cinder is left to her own devices and as far as I know as provided by evidence within the series, Cinder’s previously established goals were killing Ruby Rose and acquiring all the Maiden magic for herself.
No season highlighted this more for me than V5. I mean Cinder couldn't even keep her megalomaniac behaviour under wraps long enough for the Vault of the Spring Maiden to be opened. The instant Vernal had her back turned and Raven let her guard down, Cinder killed Vernal in her first attempt at pilfering the Spring Maiden magic.
With this in mind, the only incentive I can picture Cinder targeting Oscar with the Relic of Knowledge for is so that she can probably force our poor little barn prince into using the lamp to gain knowledge on the identity and whereabouts of Fria—the Winter Maiden. Since Salem has never successfully gathered any of the Relics, it’s safe to assume that she doesn’t know anything on the kind of powers each Relic possesses. All she probably does know is what Ozma originally disclosed to her during the events of the Lost Fable—bring all four Relics together to summon back the Brothers to place judgment on humanity. And with the God of Light’s warning to Ozma regarding the destruction of Remnant in the face of humanity in chaos, my main presumption is that that’s what Salem wants.
That being said, if Salem didn’t know how the Relics work then I assume neither did her subordinates. This is inclusive of Cinder. So even if Cinder were to somehow pilfer the Relic of Knowledge from Oscar, I doubt it’ll be of any real use to her since she doesn’t know how the Relic works at all. The only way I can picture Cinder acquiring the Relic and gaining the knowledge she desires is by abducting Oscar since he knows what the Relic can do and how to summon Jinn. I can see Cinder taking Oscar hostage in an attempt to force him to tell her how to summon Jinn. However Oscar playing brave refuses to tell Cinder anything no matter what threats she throws his way.
Infuriated, this leads Cinder to her back up plan —using Oscar as bait to lure out her main target—Ruby Rose.
Since working alone honestly didn’t fare well for Cinder last time, I’m going to assume that this is the one time Cinder might heed Raven’s old advice and stick close to Neo so that she could make more use of her little pawn.
I can picture Cinder and Neo working together to get the Relic from Oscar first. However, when they fail to unlock its power; with no dice from Oscar either, the Fire and Ice-cream Duo decide to switch tactics to a more ‘kill two birds with one stone’ type of deal. Not only is the Relic now in their possession but they also had Oscar—a friend to Ruby Rose— who they can now use to lure the unsuspecting little red rose into a trap. So that’s how I can see Oscar being placed in danger with Cinder and Neo. But that’s only if they go after the Relic first.
Here’s what I think could happen using the Relic headcanon:
In V7CH9, Ironwood told Oscar specifically to return to Atlas Academy. The PLOT made sure to draw attention to that very detail.
“…Oscar, I think it’s time you get back to the academy.”“I think you’re right.”
The General also informed everyone that he was going to see to stopping Watts and Tyrian himself. Whether that means that the General will be doing that on foot or not, I’m assuming that Ironwood is probably going to take his own airship and scout Mantle for Tyrian and Watts specifically. The PLOT made sure to highlight that little detail too.
“…What about Watts and Tyrian?”“Leave them to me.”
That being said, while James goes out to find Watts and Tyrian, I’m assuming Oscar will be taking his own separate transport to return to the Academy. Or…so we’re lead to believe. If I remember correctly from the end of last volume, Cinder and Neo are supposed to have their own air ship. Either way, it all sounds like Oscar will be alone at Atlas Academy.
So for the sake of where I’m going with this hunch, let’s say—either on the way to the academy or from the moment he returned safely to the academy, Oscar is assaulted by Neo and Cinder.
Let’s say…the horrible thing Neo ends up doing is using her illusions to trick Oscar into thinking she was Ruby (or another female character else he would openly trust and let his guard down under). Then while Oscar is distracted, Cinder sneaks up behind him and knocks him out.
With Oscar unconscious, Neo ensures to have the boy properly subdued while Cinder takes hold of Oscar’s Scroll. Let’s say…Oscar was keeping abreast of everyone’s progress down in Mantle from Atlas, using JNR or RNJR as his key correspondence. With Oscar’s Scroll, Cinder contacts Ruby.
Down in Mantle, Ruby receives an incoming call from contact handle “Cute Boy Oz” or “Cute Farm Boy”. Thinking it’s Oscar checking in, Ruby answers only for her heart to drop when it’s Cinder’s menacing voice she hears on the other line.
Let’s say…Cinder gives Ruby an instruction she had no choice but to complywith. The Fall Maiden basically threatens Ruby to come alone to a specific spot in Mantle without telling her comrades anything, otherwise Cinder would kill Oscar; just like how she killed Ozpin.
So for the second time in the plot, Ruby is forced to lie—this time to her comrades as she heads off on her own to save Oscar from Cinder. However when Ruby arrives in the exact location Cinder told her to meet her, instead of finding Cinder waiting for her with a hostage Oscar, the little red rose encounters only an illusion of Cinder with Oscar that immediately shatters the moment shemakes contact with it as Neo appears before her.
Cinder did tell Neo that she would leave the killing of Ruby up to her. So this is where they would duke it out. Meanwhile, somewhere else, Cinder is observing the battle from afar with Oscar still out cold and retrained in the background. However Oscar eventually regains consciousness. Let’s say…similar to the airship crash back in Argus, Oz returns once again to help Oscar when the ole soul sensed that his younger protégé was in mortal danger. Let’s say…Oscar only wakes up because he heard Oz’s voice screaming desperately for him to open his eyes.
Long story short, let’s say…with Oz’s help, Oscar gets the upper hand on Cinder before making his daring escape.
Taking notice of Ruby’s battle with Neo from over yonder Mantle, let’s say…Oscar tries his best to make it to Ruby’s side to help her out while trying to manoeuvre his way around Mantle to outrun a pursuing Cinder Fall now gone full Maiden form again—thus sparking their inevitable rematch too.
I’m still iffy on the whole concept of Fire and Ice-cream going after the Relic first since Ruby has been their established target since V6. I have a greater chance at believing they’d take Oscar purely to lure out Ruby, with the fact that he has the Relic being a key reason for them to target him specifically out of all of Ruby’s friends.
Since y’know, after they use Oscar to get to Ruby and kill her, they can always kill Oscar afterwards and take the Relic. Two little birds with one stone, as I said.
That and the fact that Oscar is also the most vulnerable right now since everyone will be down in Mantle (including Ironwood). That’s how I can picture things going down in the event that Cinder and Neo do go after Oscar first.
Overall, this squiggle meister just wants to see the Rosebuds vs Fire and Ice-cream in the Rematch of the century. All so it can possibly culminate in the following:
Oscar unlocking his semblance to save Ruby.
Oscar and Ozpin possibly fighting together as one with Oz lending Oscar his power to fully make use of the true power of the Long Memory.
Oscar defeating Cinder and withdrawing the Fall Maiden magic from her—unlocking his own magical potential while providing Cinder another incentive to hunt down the Winter Maiden for V8 (I have a feeling that Neo and Cinder will survive till V8. I can easily see Neo using the same illusion trick she pulled with Roman back in V2 to allow her time to escape with Cinder).
Oscar and Ruby sharing an actual “Rosegarden romance foreshadowing moment” together which parallels the scene from the Lost Fable where Ozma and Salem first fell in love after escaping the perils of the Lonely Tower together; thus hinting that Ruby and Oscar might be falling in love with each other after escaping Neo and Cinder after trying to save/protect each other.
Those are my views on that. I could be very wrong in my ideas on this but it’s worth a shot sharing, right? Hope it answers you all the same, Dagger.

Hey squiggles I am happy you noticed too that rosegarden is actually getting more focus now lol. I am not gonna lie my shipper heart almost died when yang said:" what does Oscar think?" Itwas almost as if she knew that ruby thinks Oscar's opinion is important to her. I hope we see more and some pine developmenet that was robbed from us last season lol
Hello again Dagger. Same. I’m hoping this is a routine that the show maintains for the remainder of the season. As a matter of fact, it wouldn’t surprise me if wewill be seeing Oscar and Ruby interact more for V7 since the two of them are shaping up to be the key drivers behind the current subplot with the truth about Salem being hidden from their Atlesian allies.
At the moment, Ruby had now taken the role of Ozpin while Oscar has more or less become Ruby in this situation. I’m expecting Oscar to grow more and more concerned for Ruby moving forward the longer she and the other decide to withhold the truth from Ironwood. I even expect Oscar to challenge Ruby on the matter if it comes to that stage of development which I have a strong feeling things might come to pass.
If you’d like to hear my full views on this in better detail, please check out the following posts:
RWBY Musings #80: Trust in Love. How far will Ruby’s deceit go and how much will it affect her bond with Oscar?
Pinehead Headcanons: Oscar Leaves…Because of Ruby
So yeah that’s how I’m seeing it. Looking forward to seeing what the next episode dishes out in favour of us Rosegardners since I’m sure we’re due for more from Ruby’s talk with Oscar.

Hey what did you think of this week's episode it was really good and i fell like everything came full circle. What do you think of ironwood actions. I also see ozpin returning to help oscar soon since I imagine that neo is probably just bring oscar to cinder as soon as she realizes it is ozpin but I do not know if she knows about Ozpin and salem's war tho...
Hey there Dagger. I thought this week’s episode was pretty great, actually =D Easily one of thebest episodes of the season so far for this squigglemeister. In regards to Ironwood, would it be weird if I said that I’m halfand half on his actions from last episode?
It’s one of those rare moments whereyou expected something to happen given how things were being staged but stillfind yourself being shocked when it does go down, y’know what I mean?
Like I was actually expectingIronwood to go off on Team RWBY from as early as CH9 but when it didn’t happenand our heroes once again got away with their deceitful actions towardsIronwood, I was left feeling like the Writers were once again playing off yetanother scenario where the heroes did something wrong while portraying theauthority figure challenging them on their actions as the bad guy when inactuality, they were more in the right than the heroes. I figured it was goingto be just like Argus again. But no, the Writers subverted my expectations withIronwood giving into his Baobab and turning on our heroes, calling them out fortheir deceit. And to that, I clappedbecause I’m sorry, they deserved it.
I know Team RWBY are supposed to beour heroes and therefore as ourheroes, I’m always supposed to view their actions as some brave act ofrighteousness done for the greater good---but I’m sorry fam. I couldn’t get behind anything our heroes have done since…welllast season.
For the folks who’ve been followingmy posts since the start of V7, you know that my stance has always been that the heroes were heavily in the wrong fortheir deceit towards the General. I did not agree with that one bit nor didI buy into their reasoning for it either.
So seeing them finally receive theircomeuppance as a result of this is the poeticjustice I’ve been waiting on since V6. In a way, you can almost say thatour heroes unintentionally were partially responsible for the creation themonster that is Heartless Ironwoodsince their deceit provide fuel to the Baobab that’s been manifesting withinhim since the Fall of Beacon.
Don’t get me wrong---Obviously I amnot in favour of Ironwood’s new plan to shoot Atlas into orbit while abandoningthe People of Mantle especiallyafter he promised on camera while standing in the presence of Robyn Hill---theproverbial voice of Mantle---that he wouldn’t leave them behind ever again. Formost of V7, we’ve observed the results of Ironwood’s neglect of the Mantle andits citizen. This was what made the moment in CH11 so virtuous and benevolent. It was great to see Ironwood finally take a stand with the People of Mantle andspeak towards looking out for their well-being. All the more reason why seeinghim go back on his promise to Mantle feels so disheartening. This was themoment where Oscar’s words about keeping one’s humanity even in their pursuitof their accomplishments came back into play. I’m not trying to say thatIronwood losing his humanity wasn’t properly foreshadowed. I’m more saying thatit still doesn’t make it any more disappointing as a fan of his character tosee him fall so low and to witness yet again that Mantle is the unfortunatevictim caught in the wave of Ironwood’s descent. So yeah; I’m not happy with whatIronwood is doing to the people of Mantle.
However, at the same time I’m not mad for the General reacting theway he did towards the heroes. In my opinion, the heroes deserved this punishmentsince their past actions put them in this position. The one thing Ironwoodasked of them from the get-go was to reciprocate the trust he was willing---emphasis on willing---to offer them. Instead theheroes actively chose to lie to theirAtlesian allies from the start and continued to do so up until the point theywere called out for it. The only reason the truth managed to come out in someshape or form was due in part to Oscar’s encouragement. Yes I understand thatRuby also agreed to tell Ironwood the truth too and it’s actually a decisionthat she and Oscar were on the same page about. However, the difference betweenRuby and Oscar is that Oscar was shown to disapprove of the team withholdinginformation from their Atlesian allies. He even challenged Ruby on the matter.
Not once has Ruby has been shown toregret her actions towards the General. On the contrary, she seemed rather indifferent about it even whenchallenged by Yang about the subject. The one time we’ve seen her express doubtin her decision to deceive Ironwood was in CH4 during her conversation withQrow, which I’d like to believe was influenced by her talk with Oscar at thestart of CH3. Though initially apathetic on the matter, I could at least tellthat Oscar’s words weighed deeply on Ruby’s subconscious after their talk. Allthe more reason why I was disappointed in Qrow for actually encouraging Ruby intheir deceit of their Atlesian allies. Especially coming off the outcome ofwhat happened back in Anima with Oz and the Lamp.
Apologies if I sound like I’ve beenharping on Ruby a lot for this volume but I’m afraid I have to because hercharacterization for V7 hasn’t been favorablefor me. However if there is one takeaway from the Writers’ approach to Ruby’sstory for V7 that I liked a little is showing more of those “faults” about her that Oz mentioned toOscar about back in V5.
“…In some ways, yes but in many others…no. She has quirks. Her faults, just like everyone else. But she also possessessomething unquantifiable. A spark that can inspire others even in the darkestof times…”
“This must be really hard on hertoo.”
“It most assuredly is.”
For many seasons, Ruby has beenplaced on this pedestal as this voice of guidance and inspiration within thehero team. In spite of her young age and her initial shortcomings in the past,we were able to watch Ruby grow into the role. While the leadership was thebadge she was graced with based on Oz’s decision, over the story, we watchedRuby slowly and surely grow to prove that it was a title she was meant to have. She earned it of her own diligence.
But like every leader, at somepoint, you waver and make poor decisions that end up bringing the worst outcomefor you and your team. What bothered me about the way Ruby was written so farfor this season is that it never felt as if she genuinely thought that heractions towards Ironwood and their Atlesian allies were wrong. The show always portrayed her with this sort of bright smilethat, to me as the viewer, gave the impression that she’s almost blissfully naïve to the cause and effectof her own choices.
Basically the point I’m trying tomake here is that in her own Ruby way, she became arrogant. Without even realizing it for herself, in an ironic way,Ruby didn’t just mimic Ozpin’s behavior. She also became just like Ironwood, mimicking the same behavior that became the basis for her choice to deceivehim.
Doingwhat you think is best for everyone while completely ignoring the ramificationsof what your choices might do to others and/or how it might cause others toview you in the end once the action is committed?
Wasn'tthat not the reason Ruby and by extension, the other heroes used to explainwithholding the truth from Ironwood? Don't tell the General the truth becausehe was doing what he thought was best for the People of Mantle while ignoringhis reputation in the eyes of the People of Mantle and how his actions wereaffecting them? Didn’t our heroes not commit the exact same feat but with theirAtlesian allies?
Basicallythe main point I’m making here is that, in trying to do what they believed wasthe right call, everyone made the wrongone. It’s not as one-sided assome folks might think. It’s not so much that Ironwood is wrong and the heroesare right or even Ironwood is right and the heroes are wrong. From myinterpretation, everyone is in the wronghere. Both sides have done bad inthe name of good. And both sides need to understand this very importantfactor.
However,at the moment, both sides are too ignorant to really listen to each other andthe rising tensions caused by the evacuation/abandonment of Mantle and theimpending arrival of Salem isn’t helping the situation. Despite being two sidesof the same coin---our brave faction of heroes and so-called protectors ofhumanity, they are divided.
Whatthe group needs more than anything now is a middleman. An impartial voice. Someone who hasspent time with both sides and has earned their respect or at least, the trust of their leading figures (i.e.Ruby and Ironwood). Someone who has listened to the rationales of both sidesand understands what either was tryingto accomplish with their actions. Someone who never took a side but rather identifyand spoke out on the flaws in either side’s actions.
Onnormal circumstances, Ruby would’ve been that impartial voice given herinfluence on her team. However right now, I highlight doubt that Ironwood (orany of their Atlesian allies for that matter) would be willing to listen toanything Ruby has to say after what has happened.
Itis for this reason why I’m looking to Oscar to set things straight. In previousmusings and theory posts, I’ve advocated for Oscar to be the smaller, more honest soul to mend thetethered bonds of trust within his team. I figured he would’ve played a role inOzpin’s reconciliation with his former team. But now we have the tension withIronwood.
Thisis what I believe the season has slowly been building up to with Oscar. I believe Oscar will be the one to finallytalk some sense back into Ironwood. You’ve heard me quote this once ortwice before but last season, Watts remarked that Ozpin was the only person whocould talk sense back into James.
Originallymy assumption was that Oz would’ve return to the PLOT to help with that. However, while I do want to see Oz return, I feel like Oz being the one to talkto James might somehow undermine Oscar’s development for this season. V7 has steadilybuilt Oscar up to be someone whose advice Ironwood might look towards when he’sat a loss. Not to mention that this season has also been slowly building upIronwood respecting Oscar as himself and NOT“another life for Oz or Ozma to live”.
Sowith that thought in mind, I want to see the payoff of this development for Oscar. I want it to be a case whereIronwood comes to accept Oscar as a worthy successor to Ozpin while still respectinghim as his own person.
Iwant Oscar to be the one to talk sense into Ironwood and talk him off the cloudof conceit he’s risen into. Even if it means having to actively fight him first to get him to listen tohim. It’s a shame Oscar can’t simply just project Ozpin’s soul as some kind ofastral projection before Ironwood to see. And no I’m saying that should be hissemblance. I’m just saying it as an idea.
Oh!As a matter of fact, what I would actually dig is a parallel to V5. Remember that scene with Lionheart where Oscarfirst drew the Long Memory, surprisingly Leonardo and prompting him to say“…Ozpin?” only for Oscar to smirk and cheekily respond “Not quite.”
Ithink I need a mirror of that moment with Ironwood now. I need Oscar toapproach Ironwood with this kind of commanding aura about him that demands hisattention and respect---a presence that James had only once seen reflected inthe eyes of one man named Professor Ozpin.
Imagine a moment where Jamessees Ozpin mirrored in Oscar and in a similar manner to Lionheart, it promptshim to ask “…Ozpin?”
Onlyfor Oscar to respond, in a gentler tone. “…Notquite”
Becauseit wasn’t Ozpin. It was Oscar. But now he was channelling some of Ozpin’sinfluence (as per his guidance) as ameans of getting James to finally listen to him, which he does.
Ithink that kind of moment would be great for little barn prince. Maybe it couldeven be complemented by Oscar glancing back at an apparition of Ozpin standing over him with a proud smile on hisface at his growth since his absence.
Imagine if…this moment evenencourages Oz to take more of a backseat within Oscar’s mind; relegatinghimself to more of a watchful guardian role, silently continuing to watch overOscar from the back of his mind while only offering advice when Oscar asks ofit.
Iknow some Ozpinheads want Ozpin toreturn to the story. However, let stress this by saying that Oscar is meant tobe Ozpin’s successor. The one to take his place in time. While I don’t mind Ozsticking around to look out for Oscar, I can’t picture things going back to theway they were before with Ozpin constantly taking control of Oscar’s body.
Itwas for this reason why I was glad that the show took him out of the story fora little bit since it allowed for Oscar to learn how to stand on his ownbearings while forging his own identity within the team. It was a way tofinally have Oscar step out of Ozpin’s shadow and earn his own respect amongstthe peers that he gained through Oz. While I didn’t always agree with the waythe show executed this development on Oscar’s part, my views on the outcomestill remain.
IfOz is to return, I expect him to be more of a bystander while Oscar continues to pull the reigns moving forward.Picture it as being equivalent to watching a father raising his son; helping inhis development from boy to man. At some point, the son grows up and the fatherhas to take a step back in order allow him to continue to grow on theirown---only returning when his guidance is asked of him unless it’s desperatematter of ensuring Oscar’s protection.
Itis at this point I expect Oscar and Oz to be more in harmony with one anotherthan they’ve ever been with Oz watching Oscar continue to grow into hissuccessor until the time comes for him to become a part of him. At least, that’s how I see it.
Ifanything I’d much prefer it if Oz only returned to lend Oscar some of his poweron the battlefield. While I share in your theory of Oz returning, I’m not sure if Oz will be the one to help Oscar with Neo.
Based on the way CH11 ended off, itappears that JNR might be the ones to help look for Oscar. I’m not even sure ifOscar was even kidnapped. Some FNDM theorists seem to believe he was takenhostage by Neo while others believe he might be off on his own in pursuit ofNeo. I, for one, am indecisive on which theory I think it will be.
I’m starting to lean more towardsthe notion of Oscar pursuing Neo on his own since I like the idea of Oscarbumping into JNR along the way and the four of them devise a clever scheme tolure Neo into the Tetris Training Room so that they can corner her and take herout in a similar manner to Neon of FNKI.
But in the event that Oscar has beenkidnapped, I do like your idea of Oz returning to help him out of that trickyscenario. I’d like to think that Neo is aware that Oscar is Oz since Cinderknows and she probably would’ve told her back in Mistral. Speaking of Oz, perhaps, with his guidance again, Oscarmanages to free himself from Neo’s captivity, blindsiding her and retrievingthe Relic back from her before making his escape.
As a matter of fact, instead ofbeing kidnapped, how about the idea of Oscarbeing probably off somewhere in a game of cat and mouse, trying to protect theRelic from Neo who is hot on his tail.
Perhaps…after Neo took out the droids, Oscar blindsided her and made a quick dashbefore Neo could get the Relic off of him. So for all we know, Oscar could besprinting through the halls of Atlas trying to avoid Neo. Atlas is a bigpremise since its home to the huntsmen academy and the military in addition tothe Vault and the medical facility that’s secretly housing the Winter Maiden.
So Oscar could be anywhere on the premises trying to desperately get awayfrom Neo. What’s worse is there is potential for that to actually provemore difficult for Oscar than one might realize. Since Neo’s semblance isIllusions and since she’s able to mask objects with her semblance, imagine…poor Oscar being trapped in anillusion where he’s running around in circles unsure of which direction to gosince let’s say…Neo masked off all the real exits----making any exit Oscar stumbled up berevealed to a dead end while the deadends were the real exits. Or something like that. Picture Neo toying with Oscar is that kind of way. Even worse ifshe disguises her as one of his female allies who he might desperately wishwere there to help him (like Ruby or Nora).
And with Ironwood locking offcommunication between our heroes, Oscar is probably a poor sitting duck unlesshe takes Neo head on by himself. I mean, it’s ain’t bad as a Pineheadheadcanon.
That being said, I hope the showgives us a nice little flashback of what happened with Oscar in the lastepisode. I hope they actually deliver on that explanation this time but whoknows. Overall, I hope this answers you, Dagger.

As one of the few ppl who didnt like seeing penny alive again lmao because it felt it demised her relationship with ruby. I have a theory, what if penny is the winter maiden and the relic of creation is really her core that keeps her alive and that why she was so easy to rebuild. In the episode *spoilers alert* they say she is ( blank) important to atlas. It could also explain why in volume 3 she was so close to ironwood and why penny is an unique robot that has a soul.
Hiya Dagger. Well I just shared a newmusing post voicing my stance on Penny’s return so you’re welcome to check it out if you’d life. In regards to your theories, well once upon a time I did ponder the same idea of Penny secretly being a Maiden. I figured that Ironwood would have favoured that a synthetic being would be the perfect choice for candidacy.
As a matter of fact, it wouldn’t surprise me if Penny was built for the purpose of ultimately becoming a Maiden candidate. However I don’t think that idea would be in the cards anymore given what transpired at the Vytal Festival. I figured that Penny’s whole experience in Vale was a sort of test run to see if she would make a good pick for Winter Maiden. But that probably may not be the case anymore. As a matter of fact, it wouldn’t surprise me if currently there is NO Winter Maiden.
One of my original theories is that Atlas used their experimental aura technology to extract the maiden magic from the last Winter Maiden who probably passed away from natural causes prior to RWBY’s main narrative. I made this theory on the grounds that Ironwood would use this tactic to control whoever the next Maiden will be himself, bypassing the golden rule of ‘maidens chose themselves’.
With the idea of the Relic of Creation being Penny’s core, I’d have to disagree with that. If Penny was secretly holding the Relic inside of her body then wouldn’t have Salem and her forces picked up on that little detail and tried to acquire it?
As highlighted back in V3, Cinder had the blueprints detailing Penny’s design on her Scroll. I’m assuming she received this information courtesy of Arthur Watts who probably either stole it via hacking into Atlas’ tech and database or…by use of a secret mole he has within Atlas’ ranks.
Either way, I’d like to think that if Penny had the Relic, the villains would’ve already figured out this info and would’ve targeted Penny for more than just a martyr for their ploy in the Fall of Beacon. They would have immediately scavenged her severed remains from Amity Arena before Atlas could.
Besides, Ironwood seems like a sensible man and leader. I doubt he’d be crazy and reckless enough to have the Relic secured inside of a synthetic being only to send that same being out into the public. While I get what you’re saying with Penny being under heavy surveillance, I still say it’d be too much of a risk for Atlas to have the embodiment of the Relic out in the public eye.
This is why I think the probability of Penny being a byproduct of the Relic of Creation; born to one day become Atlas’ candidate for Winter Maiden is more sound. Instead of being the Relic herself, I think Penny was brought to life through the power of the Relic of Creation. This is why my main hunch for the Relic of Creation still stands with its being based off of the Blue Fairy that animated Pinocchio, much like how Jinn was inspired by the Genie of the lamp from Aladdin.
My assumption is that Penny was probably created to one day take the mantle of Winter Maiden and the Kingdom of Vale with the setting of the upcoming Vytal Festival Tournament provided the perfect place to see whether or not tasking a synthetic being—especially one produced from the magic of the Relic of Creation with the ability to produce aura—was suitable.
That’s my hunch. I’d like to believe that Penny might still be in the running for Winter Maiden; granted that Ironwood hasn’t changed his mind on that and has reconsidered another candidate.
If I had to choose who I believe could potentially become the Winter Maiden according to RWBY, Penny and Winter Schnee are my top two choices for candidates.
Winter has been described as Ironwood’s top operative. I can see him entrusting her with the power and duties of Maiden especially given her strong bloodline as a Schnee. Winter is already a strong warrior and solider given her experience, tenacity and of course, her unique family semblance.
Imagine how much more powerful Winter could become if she was made into a Maiden. This would probably make her more formidable than a humanoid machine that can get easily damaged or destroyed as proven by the events of Vale.
Then again, these are just my views. My theories still stands though.
To reiterate, I believe Atlas’ Winter Maiden perished years ago of natural causes (old age) but Ironwood has been keeping her aura and MaidenMagic viable and secured in confinement through the power of their aura technology and research.
This way it can buy them time to select their next best candidate forMaiden and transfer the old Maiden powers into their body the same way Ozpin had planned to have Pyrhha accept Amber’s Fall Maiden magic.
Up until this point, Atlas has not chosen their candidate but they’ve been eyeballing two specific ladies. One is Winter Schnee—the right hand of the General, his top operative and the eldest daughter and former heir to Schnee Dust Company and bearer of the Schnee Family semblance.
The next candidate was Penny Polendina—an artificial being born through an experiment combining Atlas’ technology with the magic of the Relic of Creation in the hopes of forging the first of her kind—an immortalized Maiden. A hero who could never die.
And right now, Atlas is still making up its mind on who should be their next Maiden so currently, the Winter Maiden has no identity. Just two possible candidates.
At least, that’s this squiggle meister’s theory anyways.
