Down the rabbit hole: “We’re in the money”

All the way back in March 2022, I was looking for a clip of Daffy Duck singing “We’re in the money”… I sounded delirious back then (not much has changed lol)

But I thought I would never find an instance of Daffy singing this song. And I was more than satisfied calling it quits as it became apparent no one had clipped an instance of this beyond his moment in Ali Baba Bugs: which in that case, wasn’t him singing it.

Months later, on September 11th, I came across footage of Daffy Duck indeed singing this song!

But… it was sang half-heartedly (unlike what my vision recalled), my spirits were appeased but I felt my subconscious might’ve failed me for thinking so critically of a voice recording that didn’t seem to exist as far as I was aware. I was more willing to accept that I won’t find this delusional Daffy cover unless I burned through every Daffy short under the sun. As foggy as my memory was, I knew that whoever sang that Daffy had to sound convincingly like Mel Blanc to my brain back in March, and it had to have seemed like an original short. So, yeah, one could say I was basically left with no other option than to slowly binge through the looney tunes shorts until I randomly come across it.

There was no instance of him singing the song in any live shows, no nothing in the commercials, it felt like I was off on a wild goose chase than a duck hunt. So yeah, I stopped actively searching for it.

And then, in a lovely tribute video to Joe Alaskey….

This cover comes from the 1997 children’s book, “Daffy Duck for President”, written and ilustrated by Chuck Jones (his last published book before his death in 2002). And Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck were voiced by Joe Alaskey.

Frankly, if this cover wasn’t the thing I somehow had in my head for the past 8 months, I’ll be certified bonkers cuz this fits the criteria of what my little dumb March self was after. Resembles a classic short, has Daffy singing passionate and resembling Mel Blanc’s voice… I’m pretty sure this is right on the money… heh.

Anyways. Thanks if ya went outta your way to read through my journey just for this 20 second clip. I can’t express it any better just how resolved I am the moment I found this. I don’t feel delusional anymore. This was an actual thing from my memory. I’m so giddy you have no idea—

why Player/Brain (Plain if u will) is already a great ship

1) its angsty

player doesnt remember anything from their previous life, but dont you think theyd be curious? Brain holds all the memories, but brain knows that the tragedy would be overwhelming for player. This could lead to some potential dilemma on how to tell player. Alternatively, brain could also be blunt (as always) but this would still overwhelm player. This would lead to potential hurt/comfort and apology scenes between the two. Additionally, brain is the sole survivor in khml Scala from the tragedy of daybreak town. I would imagine its alienating and lonely, especially without chirithy. Seeing player must give him relief, but when player tells him they dont remember anything, brain is back to square one. Players memories, though forgotten, are not lost. The more the duo spends time together, the more they can grieve what was lost. Together they can make new friends and turn a new page, for themselves and the future

2) unlikely friends (therefore its funny)

Khux player is canonically not talkative and brain is not the type to talk bc hes friendly. I doubt brain saw player as a friend and player probably did not consider brain as a close friend. But with khml, theyre probably scrutinized for being the odd ones out in scala. Two outsiders (clodleth fam youll like this) finding company with each other, though they may have different views on how to make friends. Id imagine their friendship is a clumsy one, but theyd learn that they compliment e/o quite well. With their undying loyalty, grievances for ephemer and their friends, willingness to sacrifice themselves, and openness to learn about each other, i think they would trust eo the most in khml. They can also be hilariously blunt so bickering would def be their love language

3) brain (lol) and brawn

Brain sent player to go check out grand central station while brain stayed back to do the lore lifting, must i say more? You cannot tell me brain would be fascinated with players rusted starlight and send them out for data

4) default black and white duo/light and darkness duo

Default player is shown to wear white clothes with blond hair, meanwhile brain has black hair with black attire. We love our black n white duos (ie skuld/eph, xeha/eraqus, brain/eph, bugs bunny n daffy duck). They r aesthetically pleasing!!!

5) last bit, but they wouldnt even realize theyre in love this ship lives off the foundation of complete hurt/comfort and trust, not romance

They are slow burn to the max, if anything. They protect eo in battle ferociously, but only bc they need eo for their respective goals. They sleep in the same bed to comfort eo for nightmares but they arent friends. Brain cooks breakfast, but— 🤓

Anyway as khml comes out and we may not get any plain crumbs at all, pls remember me at my grave 😚🙏 i ofc will be sticking around for the plot. Im so excited for khml AAAA

HI THERE!! happy holidays to you and yours! IMMEDIATELY PREFACING THIS WIIIITH: you should definitely give it a go, regardless of my opinion! i don’t want to be THE GATEKEEPER OF THE TUNES HAHA so i think if you’re curious enough, regardless of what i have to say, you should give it a go!

BUT, with that said! i actually haven’t seen it in… 3 years??? oh geez! the last time i watched it i wasn’t nearly as edjumacated on the ins-and-outs of LT’s history/xharacters/grasp as a whole, so i’m sure if i were to rewatch it now i’d be like “um actually Daffy wouldn’t say that because in this short released Octember 37th, which started production on a Thoisday in the 24 and 1/2th century, he—“ BUT THAT’S NOT A BAD THING EITHER. that’s just how i am. so you’ve actually piqued my curiosity, and i may try to squeeze in time to watch it again myself and come back with any thoughts i have!

NEVERTHELESS, i recall liking it! i know i’ve seen it more than once! as with any modern post-Blanc LT production i have my qualms with it, but i don’t remember them being super big or anything. it’s arguably both guilty AND resistant of “oooooh da Looney Tunes are all one big happy family 🤗”, but i recall it being moreso the latter and that being a big reason as to why i liked it (such as Yosemite Sam punching Daffy in the arm during a heartfelt moment or Porky’s daughter—voiced by Tara Strong which is also a kind of endearingly sarcastic “lol” moment for me since it’s like… yeah this sure was released in 2006, huh!—basically saying that Daffy is in hell)

it’s a sweet special! “Looney Tunes” and “sweet” are not two things i tend to love put together, but i think in this particular special it felt earned. Daffy’s “””””lore”””””” i think was always a bit amusingly trite to me, but, again, ya gotta have a justification for the special somehow! and i do remember finding the ending genuinely endearing, even in spite of my aversions to playing that stuff totally straight in a LT production.

iirc it does a good job of giving multiple characters screen time—some longer than others, but i did respect that they had some pulls like Beaky Buzzard and i think even Hippety Hopper???? maybe???

i like it because it’s a modern production that gives Porky a spotlight and doesn’t beat down on him the ENTIRE time, and so i really enjoy that it gives a little more dimension/prioritization to the Porky and Daffy dynamic, especially something on a slightly less surface level than what they’d usually been made out to be around that time, both before and after. Porky’s always getting the short end of the stick in some way (which is why i’ve made it my sworn duty to spread my porcine propaganda) and i don’t feel that way about this special. he might even have more screen time than Bugs? i think? so i deeply admire that

I’LL HAVE TO GIVE IT A WATCH BECAUSE NOW I’M CURIOUS! the last time i saw it as i said before, i wasn’t as Matured In My Tastes yet. i’ve especially come around to Joe Alaskey’s Daffy much more since then (thanks Duck Dodgers!), so i’d love to give it a rewatch for that alone. i’m sure there’s more i’d have to nitpick now, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing, because if i’m nitpicking something it means i’m engaged HAHA

LONG ANSWER SHORT: i liked it and i’d say go for it!

i can at least answer with immediacy that it’s certainly better than the ‘70s interpretation they did of A Christmas Carol (which goes against that post-Blanc bias i mentioned)! but, at the same time, that short has this and Bah Humduck doesn’t, soooooooo……

do u have any tips for getting into ocs and developing them tho 🤔😭

Hmm I’ve had ocs in the past and I’ve wondered why I picked and chose favorites among the cast I made and I thjnk for the ones I didn’t gaf about it was because I was forcing myself to make characters filling space because I thought it would make my story look more complete but it just ended up I neglected those ocs because I found nothing about them fun or compelling to spend time on.

With casey I’ve definitely gone full self indulgence which was probably helped by the fact her concept was literally based on a joke self insert character so the fuel for me spending time with her was my intense fixation on booster gold and how much I wanted to destroy hurt kill bite kill punch to death kick kill him 😀

Make things fun for yourself! Don’t shy away from making things that you know you’re already crazy for … I’m not shy about saying casey as a concept is a culmination of a LOT of favorite characters I’ve had in the past like peridot (su), the invader zim and tak storyline, Daffy Duck .. to name a few!

And I spent a long time perfecting her design so that it was fun to draw for me …. I made her a secretary/office lady type character cuz um. I THINK THEYRE HOT? LOL … and I really like that fashion style I draw her in. So she’s almost like a mannequin for me to draw clothes I really like aesthetically. so I really have a lot of fun drawing her ^_^ you can tell by how much I do it LOL

So my number 1 advice in conceptualizing ocs is to make things fun for yourself. Are your favorite charaxters always mad scientists.. you can make one. Do you think rubber aprons are hot. You can give them one. Have you been struggling with your gender identity. You can make your oc a girl with he him probouns. Do you wish columbo was a lesbian.. you can make it happen.

As for development, as soon as I got the basic deets for casey and her role in the story I had for her to paper I found one of those tumbrl oc ask games and just filled out every single question for her. A lot of stuff was made up on the spot but just felt right and most often stuck that way but there’s no shame in making little changes as your oc grows on you and you get better aquatinted with eachother. For example I had the idea initially casey would have rich/well off and well meaning parents who were extremely normal and loved her a lot and it would be kind of a meet the robinsons “THEY ALL HATED ME” dynamic. But I quickly changed it as I thought more about casey because what I have with her and spider feels more.. fitting.

It also helps a ton if you have a friend willing to lend an ear :) and I don’t mean just 50+ messages discord chats (because those are extremely enlightening too) but I mean just posting and posting and posting about your little guy and getting those precious 4 likes on your lore document. I always take this sort of approach with original stuff LOL IF I POST ABOUT CASEY LIKE A LUNATIC FOREVER EVENTUALLY ILL TRICK EVERYONE INTO THINKING THEYRE CASEY FANS…!!!

FANG THE HUNTER: ISSUE #1 - THOUGHTS

Warning: Spoilers Ahead

Figured since folks seemed to enjoy my StH #68 post so much, I should share my thoughts on Fang's first issue as well.

It'll be a shorter one, since I really don't have as much to say about it.

To put it short... I liked it! I really love Ian Flynn writing these Classic stories. It seems that when IDW Sonic began, Ian Flynn really squeezed himself into the niche of Plot Guy. Even after Evan Stanley took over as Head Writer, it seemed like Ian would jump back in for the big, heavy, climactic events like Issue #50. It's a really nice change of pace to see him writing these more light-hearted, lower-stakes stories, they give him a great opportunity to display the fantastic understanding of the series' character dynamics that made him a prominent figure in the series.

One particular bit of character work I'm fond of here: Sonic being just a little bit of a jerk!

I'm not the first to bring this up, but nowadays, Sonic has lost a bit of that edge that made him special in the early days. Not Edge in the same sense of, like, Shadow, but the stuff that made Sonic the inventor of the Mascot With Attitude. Nowadays, he's just kind of a smart-talking hero a lot of the time, so I really love stuff like the OK KO crossover taking the opportunity to dial that 90s Attitude up to 11.

Bean gets some solid gags here, too. This was the issue that made me realize how heavily his character writing is inspired by Classic Daffy Duck.

Mauro Fonseca is also doing a fantastic job with art. Their art has been catching my attention lately, they're really good at keeping things on model, but squash-and-stretching those models when needed. I think they're a perfect fit for a Classic miniseries.

The story follows Fang the Hunter, one of the series minor antagonists, and his colleagues Bean the Dynamite and Bark the Polar Bear, as they hunt a mysterious eighth Chaos Emerald.

Right away, it seems to me that this is a reference to Sonic Championship (formerly Sonic the Fighters), Bean and Bark's introductory game, which featured eight Emeralds. This left the game in something of a weird position, because Bean and Bark reappearing in later material made Championship canon, but ever since Sonic Adventure, the series' lore has always made it clear that there are only seven Chaos Emeralds. This is a neat little way of addressing that inconsistency!

The comic's setup takes an opportunity smooth over a few other cracks as well.

In early Sonic games, lore concerning the Chaos Emeralds was kind of all over the place. Some stuff made it seem like each of the different islands the games took place on had their own set of Chaos Emeralds, some had Emeralds with different colors than others, it was clear that they didn't really think to lock down the Chaos Emerald lore until later down the line.

Here, that's attributed to the legendary status of the Chaos Emeralds and their mythological nature.

To me, this is the job of these comics. Telling stories set in the world of the games provides a perfect opportunity to expand upon that world and tell us how the bits of worldbuilding we get in the games all fit together. I will always love when they use the comics to dig into a game concept and give us a better understanding of how it fits in the games' world.

Once again, I'm a big fan of the environments here. The Classic stories always lean into the fantastical element to their settings, with Seasons of Chaos having a full-blown Zone lineup! What we get here is nothing out of the ordinary in that regard, but it's still nice to see the characters run around areas that actually look like places from the games!

That's about all I got! It sets up a sort of B-Plot mystery early on and I was kind of intrigued about where it was gonna go, but the later issue covers have already spoiled it for me so...

I'm excited for more, I really like having a story that centers around a plucky little group of rogues instead of Sonic and his Assigned Pal For This Arc. It's a pretty good start, but nothing enormous and status quo shifting. You know, a Classic Story! It's fun and I'm having fun with it!

Best Friends Redux should’ve been the last episode of The Looney tunes show.

Daffy literally had so much development between the show’s very first episode, to the end of the show and this episode highlights it. Literally called “Best Friends” s1 ep1, to s2 ep25 “Best Friends Redux”. To “Super rabbit”’s credit though, it can be documented that in the first episode, Daffy couldn’t even remember Bugs’ catchphrase: whereas in Super rabbit, he could recognise Bugs’ scent, when he was lying, and what shampoo/conditioner he was using. I could go on an info dump about Daffy’s development in tlts but that’s for another time.

Back on topic, this episode actually feels like a good homage and incoorporation of Daffy’s greedy persona from the Chuck Jones shorts. He does this kinda possessiveness in other episodes, but this one was fun to watch especially since it was actually integral to the context of Daffy’s development in his friendship with Porky, and friendship to Bugs (though arguably lesser of the actual focus ironically). He seems to improve and recognise that he can’t hog Bugs all to himself, albeit by directly witnessing the consequences of it. And his friendship with Porky improves as he seems to learn to be less possessive with Bugs (by the tiniest bit), and shows kindness to Porky (and Rodney) after all that trouble.

I do wish we coulda had more development/episodes after this season, but from my experience with Duck Dodgers s3… I think I’m comfortable with this being the season finale.

Yeah, I honestly recommend switching Super rabbit with Best friends redux, you’ll get more bang for your buck if you watch the show and just do that for those last two episodes. And maybe omit Casa de Calma out of your watchlist jkjk unless…? 👀

Also just to end things off unprofessionally, this clip also is just an excuse for me to gush over Joe Alaskey’s Daffy cuz WOW he is one of my favourite Daffy vas to date! Y’all realize just how insanely smooth that clip transition is? That is ALL HIM. I’m so attached to this man’s voice I really can’t emphasize just how much I love his Daffy voice. He lives in memory 😔🙏🙏🙏

Typical, Daffy coming over to Bugs' side of the forest.

Also Bugs is consistently very cheerful about Christmas throughout media, so that's neat little thing. He info dumps factoids about Christmas to Daffy in Bah Humduck. Also also! Bugs "I could explain it but it's much more fun to just watch" is so typical of him. He applies this thought process to everything. This is why his eyes tend to draw towards Daffy. And Elmer's reliably entertaining to watch because of how easy it is to toy with him.

Zany to The Max AU

HOLA GENTE BONITAAA

No sé si alguien me sigue prestando atención aquí, pero no importa.

Este Post es para contar todo el Lore y aquellas cosas que no están en el fic ‘The Best Fan’ de mi AU Yax/Dewkko “Zany to The Max” también conocido como ‘ZtTM AU’.

Primero que nada, empecemos con que este AU no es solo un crossover entre Warner y Disney, sino más bien los personajes de A Goofy Movie y Animaniacs (incluyendo a Bugs Bunny y Daffy Duck) existieran dentro del universo de Ducktales, amoldándose a la lógica de la serie, centrado en la versión de 2017 y después.

El fic también se presenta unos 3 años después de ‘The Last Adventure’.

Ahora vamos con los miembros de la banda.

Max Goof, el conoce a la familia Duck desde pequeño, ya que Goofy, Donald y Mickey eran mejores amigos en la secundaria, pero Donald fue a quien menos vio ya que estaba de aventuras con su familia. Después del accidente de la Lanza de Selene, Donald se mudó a MouseTown y cuando no pudo mas, Goofy le pidió a Max que cuidara a los huevos de Della para que él y Mickey pidieran hacer que Donald tuviera un descanso. Así el se convirtió en el niñero de los trillizos hasta que cumplieron seis años y regresaron a Duckburg.

(Sé que es raro que un niño de tres años cuide tres huevos, pero Max era muy inteligente para su edad y en general solo tenía que mantener la lámpara de calor encendida y no dejar que nada golpeara los huevos).

Max fue un niño actor, debutando en un serie con su padre llamada ‘Goof Troup’. En este universo las películas no existen.

Actualmente Max está cursando el segundo año de universidad (en su mayoría online debido a las giras) en la carrera de Fisioterapia. Tiene un certificado en primeros auxilios. Habla ingles y español fluidos. Toca la guitarra, el bajo y de niño tocaba batería. Ahora solo es el guitarrista y vocalista principal de la banda.

Estos son los atuendos que suele usar, ya sea de forma casual o para conciertos, es bastante indulgente con su aspecto así que deja que Yakko o Dot escojan por el (no sé si pueden ver los que están marcados con una estrella, pero si es así, ese es el atuendo predeterminado de Max en el AU).

Max Outfit’s

    Los Warner. Primero hablaré de ellos en general y después individualmente.

Los Warner en este universo son una raza muy rara, solo quedan tres de ellos y solo un grupo selecto los conoce (entre ellos Max, sus padres adoptivos Bugs y Daffy, Mickey y los Duck). Se les conoce como Cartoonus Characterus y son una combinación indeterminada de incontables animales, pero los más notorios son gato, perro y conejo. Tienen habilidades ‘mágicas’ como moldear las leyes de la física a su antojo para hacer hazañas imposibles, sus cuerpos aunque pequeños o delgados son terriblemente fuertes, capaces de levantar 10.000 veces su propio peso sin dudar, son súper resistentes y flexibles pueden soportar altas temperaturas o bajo cero, puedes torcer sus cuerpos como si fuera goma y también tienen la habilidad de manipular el espacio tiempo para conseguir o esconder objetos de todos tamaños y formas en algo que ellos llaman ‘HammerSpace’ que se supone esta en todos lados y en ningún lado.

Nota: Huey se vuelve loco con esto xd.

Ellos no solo son únicos en su raza, son la realeza del continente perdido de WarnerStock, al que solo puedes llegar si sabes lo que estas buscando, algo así como el triangulo de las bermudas.

En este reino ciertos habitantes selectos por la realeza pueden aprender las mismas habilidades mágicas de los Warner en una medida más débil. Entre esos están Bugs, Daffy y los consejeros reales Brain y Pinky los ratones.

La reina Angelina II y El rey William dieron sus vidas en combate para evitar que el dictador Salazar invadiera sus tierras.

  Yakko Warner, es el mayor de sus hermanos y por ende, el heredero al Trono de Warnerstock. Perdió a sus padres a los doce años durante la batalla contra Salazar y el junto a sus hermanos fueron adoptados por Bugs Bunny, la mano derecha del Rey, medio año después.

Tiene un IQ de más de 200 por lo que es considerado un genio. Toca la guitarra, el piano y el violín, pero en la banda es el guitarrista secundario y es quien hace los raps por su habilidad innata de hablar sin parar. Habla cuatro idiomas incluyendo japonés, francés y lenguaje de señas. Practica el combate con espada y a veces hace poesía.

Actualmente está en su segundo año universitario por su título en Literatura y el primero en Música. Él fue quien nominó a Max como líder de la banda.

Su forma de vestir no coincide con alguien que estaría en una banda rock-pop, pero no es que le importe mucho (de nuevo, los pines con una estrella son el predeterminado).

Yakko Outfit’s

  Dot Warner, es la menor de sus hermanos. Es absolutamente la princesa del grupo y se asegura de que todos lo sepan al menos una vez al día. Adora con todo su corazón a sus padres adoptivos, en especial a Daffy. 

Es algo atrevida para su edad, lo que a veces saca el peor lado de hermano protector de Yakko, aun así es bastante inteligente y refinada la mayor parte del tiempo, dando honor a su titulo real. Toca el piano y el bajo en la banda (no lo admitirá, pero ve a Max como su maestro y suele pedirle consejos cuando tiene problemas con su instrumento). Tiene un impecable manejo de la etiqueta real y lleva su corona a donde sea que valla.

Planea estudiar manejo empresarial.

Le encanta vestir faldas, pero eso no significa que es lo único que se pone, ella es la única que se viste acorde al tipo de música que tocan. Le gusta ponerse tops negros porque se confunde con su pelaje y sorprende a la gente al pensar que esta semidesnuda. le gustan los accesorios como anillos o cadenas y a veces hace tutoriales de maquillaje.

Dot Outfit’s

  Wakko Warner, el hermano del medio. Tiene el alma de un niño y su creatividad no tiene límites. Ve a Max como un hermano mayor mas y le gusta pasar el tiempo con él. Tiene un agujero negro por estómago y la capacidad inexplicable de comer cualquier cosa, de los tres es quien está más sintonizado con sus habilidades ‘mágicas’ y las aprovecha con aguda naturalidad. Al mismo tiempo, de sus hermanos es quien tiene mejores sentidos y suele dejarse llevar por sus instintos animales más de lo que debería.

Toca la batería y violín, le gusta mucho hacer duetos de batería con Max o duetos de violín con Yakko. Conoce todos los bailes y canciones folklóricas de Warnerstock y siempre se une a los conciertos en la plaza principal.

Aun no sabe que quiere estudiar o hará cuando sea adulto. Tiene TDAH y dislexia.

Su guardarropa consiste en su mayoría de suéteres azules y overoles, pero de entre sus hermanos es el más diverso en lo que a ropa consiste, ya que tiende a gustarle todo. No le quites su gorra, Max lo intento una vez y casi pierde un dedo.

Wakko Outfit’s

    Dewey Duck, en su mayoría su personalidad no cambió mucho a lo que era al final de la serie, pero si puedo decir que su habilidad física mejoró mucho con los años gracias a sus aventuras familiares.

Es fan indiscutible de la banda desde su debut y Wakko fue su primer crush (also, le ayudó a descubrir su identidad sexual).

    Bugs Bunny y Mickey Mouse, ambos son co-managers de la banda. Se conocieron durante sus años de actuación cuando fueron invitados a hacer una aparición especial en la película ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ y desde entonces son grandes amigos. (En otro post más adelante explicare mejor como se conocieron y decidieron crear la banda).

      Tengo muchas cosas más por contar de este au, pero lo dejaré para otros post, porque este ya fue bastante largo xd. Por favor no duden de hacer sus preguntas del AU, estaré más que feliz de responderlas.
