here's why i liked lis: double exposure

[DE SPOILERS BELOW] this is unpopular, but double exposure is overhated. even with the absence of pricefield and the incredibly weak ending (which is a huge sticking point to many people in this community), there's a lot of good things about DE that got overshadowed with hate. so here 's what i liked about it!

Hannah Telle, her voice acting was great as per usual and her nomination at the game awards was definitely deserved (even if she didn't win)

At the beginning of the game, if you right click to rewind, Max will say something like “old habits die hard” and that was a nice call back

Aged up Max, it was great playing as her again and I think the art team nailed her character design compared to how she looked in LIS1

Safi, Vinh, Amanda, Loretta, Moses, & Gwen were great characters

Someone Was Listening by dodie SLAPS, and the use of the song when Max shifts into the Living World for the first time was amazing

The VFX for Max’s timeline shift ability was sick, and the timeline shifting was fun to play with

Realistic animations and a great snowy environment- huge props to the art teams, I just wish we got to see more of it

Safi’s voice acting and motion capture overall, her actress did a great job

The one conversation at the start of Chapter 4 between Safi/Max talking about their powers

Detective Alderman showing what happens if you interact with the split timeline

The twist with Max holding the gun, that was chilling

The concert scene with Amanda was fun, and I liked going on the date with Vinh

The scene where Safi, Max, and Vinh expose Lucas (so deserved)

I loved the friendship between Safi and Max, I wish we got to see more of that before she died. Safi on her own is an interesting character and I’m interested to see what D9 does with her after this

The sequence where Max chases Max (Safi), it was such a rush it was exciting

Safi’s power in Chapter 5 freaking out and causing her to shapeshift into different people

The darkroom nightmare scene in Chapter 5, I was actually flipping out bc I was worried Jefferson was gonna jumpscare us

Moses and the gingerbread house scene was so emotional. It really showed how close he was to Safi.

Moses’ reaction to Max picking the ‘nerdy and dirty’ mug lmao

As with all the games, I liked reading the texts and Crosstalk messages. The journal was cool to read to see what happened after the events of LIS 1, but I wish it was as comprehensive as it was previously. But I chalk that up to Max being too busy to keep a proper journal

Also, it’s so nice to see Max as a professional, established photographer! I was worried she’d be doing other stuff and stepping away from photography, but it’s so cool to see her transform from a meek art student to an award winning photographer. Character progression wins!!!

Why is Max still pursuing photography?

You know what else baffles me about DE? Max is still a photographer.

I know Max would not allow trauma to define her future, but Max should not want anything to do with photography after Jeffershit.

In the Bae timeline, she would have Chloe to give her a pep talk. Chloe would knock some sense into Max and say "don't you fucking dare let that bastard take your childhood dreams away from you."

In the Bay timeline, Max doesn't have that person to give her the encouragement to pursue her dreams and move on pass the trauma Jeffershit inflicted on her.

I would argue that Warren, Kate and Victoria could convince Max not to allow what Nathan and Jefferson did to Rachel and Chloe to stop Max pursuing photography. But since not a single one of them are present in Max's life in DE, I just can't see it. I can't see D9 giving them the kind of presence that would convince Max to pursue photography again.

And since Bay!Max is still struggling with the loss of Chloe, then why is Max still pursuing photography?

You know, I’m happy for Max for finally being able to get her photos exhibited, and not have to undo it all because of some tornado, or be denied by some rude New Yorkers.

Now we know she truly made it as a photographer. Just like Chloe said that she would after all this time.

Honestly, that is one thing I'm really happy to see. Max was definitely the most career-focused out of all the LiS protagonists and it's really gratifying to see her artistic career take off and her work recognized. And also actually see her work, read the exhibit placards with her professional bio, and use the camera as a player, because it was difficult to see the throughline and thought process behind her photos in LiS1.

I also find Max's photographic subjects so fascinating. The exhibition is called "Walking With Ghosts," and this is the description:

After receiving her first camera at the age of six (a Contax T2), Maxine Caulfield has sought to capture a life that evades explanation. From the recent "green hell" of the recession-era Pacific Northwest to the ancient industrial of the Rust Belt, she has restored meaning to empty places, illuminating the plights of everyday people living on the brink of change. A winner of the IPA award and a National Geographic Fellowship, she is currently Caledon University's Hannah Hellerton Artist in Residence.

In short, it looks like Max became a freelance travel photographer after the first game and has been all over the United States. I wouldn't be surprised if she did photojournalism as well, because the examples point toward raising awareness for environmentalism and poverty in the Rust Belt, and she even won a fellowship hosted by National Geographic (the prestige!!).

However, the actual photos on display are all landscapes. In the reveal livestream, Hannah Telle describes Max like, "She doesn't feel comfortable in any one place, and she's living a nomadic lifestyle, taking photographs of abandoned, lonely spaces. For some reason, anything that's desolate or stark or intense really draws her eye." Max's new artistic obsession with destroyed environments seems to be her way of processing her trauma about witnessing the storm and the people she may have lost, whether or not it destroyed Arcadia Bay. The diner photo "Order Up" is definitely inspired by The Two Whales, for example.

What really intrigues me about Max's work is that it just toes the line between artistic and unnerving... much like her current mental state, where her intense trauma is just beneath the surface. Essentially, Max's photography captures liminal spaces, likely meant to evoke a mix of nostalgia, eeriness, and surrealness in the viewer. Max's photos most definitely include places where people have died, and where most people would be scared away, Max is instead drawn to these sites, as if seeking a big enough creative outlet for her gaping crater of grief. And who else was obsessed with capturing moments of transition between innocence and fear...? None other than Mark Jefferson.

Now, I don't know if D9 will go as far as to delve into the implications of Max's trauma on her morality, but after writing Alex as unambiguously a good person, it could be extremely weighty and nuanced if D9 used Max's art as a reflection of her mental state and show her actively resisting becoming like her disturbed, predatory teacher, which would also tie DE more strongly to LiS1. So far at least, we know she's not obsessed with the macabre like Nathan Prescott was. I don't think her art is mentally disturbed, but D9's interpretation (so far) is a really intelligent way of showing that Max's eye and mind are reflective of someone on the fringes of society. While her work has resonated with artists and critics, it's also not the healthiest way to process her trauma. I think showing the darker sides of her personality (that isn't just a nightmare sequence at the end) could make for some really thoughtful, nuanced characterization. She's already socially separated from most people because of her powers and trauma, so she brings new light to neglected spaces (and likely people, too) in her art.

Also, it's now canon that Max got her first camera when she was six years old, the same year she met Chloe 🥹 Nowadays, Contax T2's go for over $1,000 on Ebay! Even back then, Max was a little artiste who apparently knew how to scope out the most coveted analog camera 😂

Kinda annoying that Victoria says she originally went to Blackwell because she knew Jefferson was a teacher there in the first game and then they still make her go to Blackwell in Before the Storm, back when photography classes weren’t even a thing in the academy. Like, I get that they wanted to put a ‘villain’ there (though they could’ve pretty much made up a completely new character who could’ve also been an asshole who was part of the Vortex Club) and I guess they wanted to explore the hatred Victoria had for Rachel but it’s kinda worrying that D9 didn’t even try that hard to make a game that was accurate. It’s not even the only plothole in BtS but that’s the one that annoys me the most.

The game is fine, realistically. Not groundbreaking not "unplayable" like every other person throws around when they don't like something. It's fine, I think sensationalism ruins the opportunity to enjoy things far too often, and this game's drama shows that. The worst parts about it was the ending, and how some plot points were handled. New characters were great (ILY GWEN), Max being mature and taking initiative was great, Max confronting her problems head on was great. You couldn't make this game without her, and I'm happy she came back. Also? It's fucking beautiful, I love the art direction, and the soundtrack is very solid imo, but I'm a big fan of Tessa Rose Jackson so a lot of bias there. The photography sections were also a good host of fun, her power were neat as well (just wish we had more agency with it 🙃.) There's some bad narrative choices, and i think that's what holds the game back the most. It definitely felt more mature than the original though, and D9 could def improve off of this. Def not worth the backlash the game is getting + was very nice to see new poc added to the franchise's roster.

Double Exposure was good, the haters are overreacting.

Chloe was never going to be a big part of the game. She's dead in half the playthroughs. It's completely believable that she and Max would break up in the bae timeline. Have you met Chloe? That level of immaturity combined with extreme teenage trauma x2 is not conducive to an immediately perfect relationship. They've been glued together for 10 years with no room to grow into their own individual people as adults. They need a break. Also the DE romance options are very flirty and casual and don't take away from Pricefield at all. It's literally so easy to imagine that Chloe and Max get back together in a few years.

The people protesting this game are missing out.

April was a month for the creatives !! I really got a grip on After Effects, got some great 35mm shots, and got commissioned for another probate !

(2) Chelce, P, and I finally got to hangout freely because she was finally FREED !!

4) In high school they didn’t let us decorate our grad caps. So for college, I wanted to be cute and brag about my accomplishments. Shout out to Meg !!
